Chorlton Traders Association (CTA) is a dynamic group of local businesses that make things happen. If you’ve ever seen flowers, heard music, had fun or felt Christmassy in Chorlton, it’s likely that CTA was involved somewhere along the line.

Let’s light up Chorlton!

As we announced last month, Saturday 6 December is the day when Christmas gets cracking. A secret celebrity guest will be flicking the all-important Christmas light switch at a party in Chorlton Precinct, where you’ll also find Santa in his grotto, live music, mulled wine and some Christmas cheer, Chorlton style. There’s still time to grab a ticket or three for the Chorlton Traders Christmas Raffle in early December. There are fantastic prizes to be won; from food and drink to photoshoots and jewellery, with all proceeds going towards the festivities. You can buy tickets in a number of shops: just look out for the posters. The prize draw will be made in the library on December 8. Look out for festive markets in December (see page 24), and don’t forget that Beech Road is open late on Thursdays 4, 11 and 18 December.

A Big Day to Shop Small

Saturday 6 December is also Small Business Saturday, when lots of our local traders will have special deals and exclusive one-day-only offers. It’s yet another great reason to shop local and celebrate what makes our neighbourhood such a great place to be. Get the latest by following @smallbizsatM21

Psst… pass it on

And finally…

…all that remains is to wish all our members, customers, friends and neighbours a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2015. Thank you for your support.

Membership Fees:

6 December is also the launch day of the 2015 TAG! Cards. For those of you still TAGless, these nifty little cards can bag you year-round discounts in over 60 local independent businesses. There’s a small charge, but the card pays for itself in no time. Show your loyalty to Chorlton with the Chorlton loyalty card. It’s that simple. Pick up yours, along with a bargain or two in all shops showing the TAG! logo. Visit www.tagpassiton.co.uk for more information.

Christmas gift ideas from

Chorlton Bookshop Welcome To The Museum: Animalium Katie Scott & Jenny Broom £20

This is the first in a series of virtual museums and includes more than 160 specimens. Wander the galleries and discover a collection of exhibits on every page. It includes informative text on everything from the simple sponge to the elephant.

Moone Boy

Chris o’Dowd & Nick V Murphy £10.99

Based on the successful TV series, this book follows 11 year old Martin Moone in his attempt to create the perfect imaginary friend. It says all you need to know about Martin that he comes up with Sean Murphy, an office clerk in a bad suit, prone to extreme laziness! Perfect for fans of Diary of A Wimpy Kid.

Plenty More Yotam Ottolenghi £27

The perfect gift for those who think vegetables should take centre stage on a plate. This follows on from Plenty and features 150 new and exciting recipes. As ever, the dishes look stunning and would be sure to impress. Never again will your rhubarb be made into

a crumble. Now you will be able to bake it and serve with sweet labneh and poached quince!

More Fool Me Stephen Fry £25

Love him or hate him, Mr Fry is here to stay and has become a national treasure. Part three of his autobiography sees him descend into the worst of showbiz excesses. Told with brutal honesty, he shines a light on his life in the 80s and 90s when, seemingly, nothing could go wrong for him. Along the way we meet a glittering cast of his showbiz friends.

The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy Rachel Joyce £12.99

Those who read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry will recognise Queenie Hennessy. This book tells her side of the story. Queenie is shocked to hear that Harold Fry is walking the length of England to come and save her from terminal cancer. She’s not sure she can hang on long enough. Just in case, she writes another letter, this one, a confession of secrets she’s hidden for over 20 years. An emotional but brilliant read.

Us

David Nicholls £20

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, this is a bittersweet novel written with wit and intelligence. When Douglas’ son announces he is leaving, his wife decides it’s time for her to go too. This last family holiday together therefore suddenly turns into something far more important. Douglas resolves to make it the trip of a lifetime. A must read for those that enjoyed the hugely successful One Day.

Moriarty Anthony Horowitz £19.99

This is the second Sherlock Holmes novel from Anthony Horowitz and again he doesn’t disappoint with his re-creation. With breath-taking pace, Horowitz weaves a tale that even Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud of. To quote from Holmes himself, ‘The game is afoot….’

Abducting A General Patrick Leigh Fermor £20

Perhaps best known for his travel writing, this is an account of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s wartime experiences. One of the most remarkable feats during this time was his kidnap of Commander General Kreipe, who he managed to capture in Crete, during 1944. Published for the first time, this is Fermor’s own recollections of that famous event, brought vividly to life with his usual style and skill.

Community Spin Decks Showcasing local musical talent

Richard Lomax

Introducing Chorlton retro synth afficionado Richard Lomax as he prepares to unleash his debut album Down There For Dancing. With an omnichord under his arm and a catalogue of catchy, surf-pop tunes in his heart, Lomax is one Chorlton act you can’t miss.

wwww.richardlomaxmusic.com Tell us about your upcoming album

The album is called Down There For Dancing. I’m playing on it with The Tontine who are Si Borkin (bass), Oli Hughes (drums) and Cleg (guitar) - though sadly he’s since moved to Brighton to open a chain of men’s hair salons and form a ridiculously talented bluegrass band. We recorded it live at the King’s Arms in Salford. I’ve never recorded my own music like that before, but

I much prefer it. Having everyone in the same room as opposed to recording the parts separately has given it a more spontaneous feel. We overdubbed some bits of vocals and Omnichord at my house. Phill Howley played a bit of percussion and Joel Roberts added some double bass at DogFace studios.

Wag The Wonderbitch (find it on YouTube!) in there as well. Such good eggs...

Dan Morris has put together some mint artwork. It’s the top of my boot with the laces tied up, but we punched some holes in the top of each album and tied a real shoelace through.

The Happy Soul - the band get better every time I see them. Do The Literature Thieves count as Chorlton now one of them lives here? Not sure if Nat (who plays under the name The Bear Around Your Neck) lives in Chorlton but he plays here a fair amount, so him. Ash Hunter as well... really like his stuff and his album is out soon too.

How would you describe your music in three words?

Here, There & Everywhere (or Lo-fi Folk Surf).

What are your favourite places to play in Chorlton?

Strange Brew is where we played our first gig as a band and it’s where the album launch is too. They let us film bits of the video to Facebook “f ” Logo

CMYK / .eps

www.facebook.com/lomaxmusic Facebook “f ” Logo

CMYK / .eps

Mono and the Folk Club would qualify as favourites too. I like a low ceiling.

What other Chorlton artists would you recommend?

Where can we see you next? I’m playing at The Art Of Tea in Didsbury in December. Gideon Conn is playing as well, and he’s always a joy and delight to watch. • Interview by Joe Beech

Celebrating Winter Solstice On Chorlton Green Saturday 20th December 2014, 3-8pm Celebrating the shortest day of the year has become the Horse and Jockey’s excuse for a Christmas party. Centred around children, the event transforms the Green into a winter wonderland, complete with Father Christmas handing out presents in his grotto, real live reindeer and rides. The night is filled with music from choirs and bands with plenty of mulled wine.

Music includes the very popular Chorlton Children’s Choir, whose repertoire includes everything from Elbow to Elgar and Britten to Britpop. Esteemed opera singer, Aimee Toshnee will also be serenading Solstice guests. The Christmas entertainment promises

to prise out the inner child from all who attend. The Winter Solstice is a preChristian festival, celebrated within many different cultures in the Northern Hemisphere. The festival marked the beginning of an uncertain time as many communities were unsure of their survival through the winter. These days Winter Solstice is a time to unwind and stock up on mulled wine during the lead up to the Christmas rush. The celebration forms part of the Horse and Jockey’s community event programme. The landmark pub has invested over £24,000 in free events throughout the year. They continue to grow their event calendar and boast the largest

3pm

free fireworks display in Chorlton. Winter Solstice celebration is a long standing event that the pub has continued to celebrate since its refurbishment back in 2009.

Wine, Cheese and Charity Local businesses team up to raise money for good causes Some partnerships are just too tasty to ignore. This month, two stars on Chorlton’s foodie landscape join forces to raise funds for two very good causes. Brew and cake emporium Tea Hive will be opening its doors for a special Wine and Cheese Evening on December 11, delivered in association with cheesemonger and deli Hickson & Black.

Cheese and wine is arguably one of life’s most popular food and drink pairings, second only to tea and biscuits. You’ll learn more about the best combinations and you may even pick up tips about what every sophisticated

W

cheeseboard will be wearing this Christmas. Every penny of the £10 ticket price will be split between Macmillan Cancer Care and the Kieran Fest fund. For those who may not know, Kieran Crump Raiswell was a popular Chorlton teenager, killed in an unprovoked attack in 2013. Kieran Fest raises money for 42nd Street, a charity helping children and young people under stress.

Crafty Christmas Pretty Paper Bauble

This time of year is a favourite for crafters: the dark, but cosy, nights give us a chance to try some new skills and tackle those more detailed projects. December is also the start of the festive season, when crafting is at its very best. Our friends at the Ministry of Craft have taken a bit of time out from their programme of courses to show us a decorative crafty quick fix, with a highend, purse-friendly result. Add a touch of handmade to your home, or to someone’s Christmas stockings!

1

Layout your cupcake cases on a work surface (which makes the next repetitive actions easier!). Take your pencil, with the rubber facing upward and place the centre of the case over the rubber. Carefully scrunch the case around the pencil.

3

Repeat this method until you have glued cases the full circumference of the ball. Each case should be around 1 cm apart (they’ll fan out to cover any gaps) and most balls handily have a line around the centre you can follow as a guide to start you off.

2

Place a blob of hot glue at the centre of the case and, using the pencil, stick the case to the polystyrene ball with a firm push.

4

You can layer up different colours and patterns of cup cake cases, to create alternative looks.

You will need :

Polystyrene ball – any size larger than 7 cm diameter Pencil with a rubber on the end Mini or standard cup cake cases (approximately 100 standard size cases should cover one bauble) Hot-glue gun 10 cm of ribbon or cord for hanging

5

Once the ball is almost covered, fold over a 10cm piece of cord or ribbon to make a loop and glue onto the centre of the remaining circle. Continue to add your cupcake cases around the ribbon.

Welcome

What a cracking year we’ve all had at JP & Brimelow Chorlton in 2014, as December becomes a vibrant month both on the high street and with the social calendar booking up quickly. To arrange a free market appraisal please call my team on 0161 882 2233. Kind regards,

Selling in Winter I’ve chosen to focus on why it’s a good idea to get your home onto the market in December. Once the clocks go back, the nights start to draw in and celebrity jungle commences on our TV sets. Many home owners put thoughts of selling on the back burner, yet savvy sellers might be missing a trick. Selling in winter can be a great opportunity and here’s why:

• Less competition • Take advantage of peak internet traffic over the holiday period (according to rightmove.co.uk the busy period is from BOXING DAY).

• Stronger Prices • Only the serious venture out • Some homes are winter homes • It can work out cheaper to sell

Selling in winter is not for everyone but there are obvious benefits to some. Definitely food for thought as the last quarter here in my office is my second busiest.

December In Your Garden By Katherine Watson

At the end of my decking I have an acer, palmatum atropurpureum, a Japanese maple that I planted about ten years ago when I got it free with some Queen of the Night tulips from Parkers. Back then, it was a tiny stick of a plant that battled in its not ideal position of shade, leaning forward as it grew to reach the light. I’ve neglected it gently over the years, but it has valiantly kept going, with a moderate display during the autumn leaf fall and as a regular perch for a variety of birds eyeing up the feeder nearby. This year, I am determined to look after it a bit more in the hope that it will shine a little brighter, as it should.

During the late summer, a very large sycamore that had become an ivy ball, in the neighbour’s garden, but situated right against our boundary, blew down taking with it the long cast of shade from our garden. The effect was incredible; the garden was immediately brighter and light was able to access previously shady nooks and crannies, including the area where my poor acer is. On the other side, I have a berberis hedge which also leans towards the light and is a bit woody at the acer end so I’m going to take out a section of that to allow some light in from that side too. It won’t know itself. It fits well into the December garden – the shape of acers is generally quite satisfying without leaves and since I’ve had new decking - a black composite deck which cost as much as a small house - the garden could be moving in an East Asian direction (not physically but thematically of course). This serenity and sophistication will have to wait though, because this month, I’ll be dressing my acer up with some coloured festoon lights (I’ve been after some for ages), dusting off the nodding reindeer and embracing the necessary naff and tack of Christmas.

The Story of Chorlton & Whalley Range Walking into Whalley Range in the winter of 1851 • By Andrew Simpson In the winter of 1851 I might well have fancied a brisk walk from Chorlton into Whalley Range.

Now the most obvious route would have been north along Manchester Road and then on to Upper Chorlton Road but this was a private road and there would have been a charge. So instead I would have headed out from Lane End down what is now Sandy Lane, past Park Brow Farm and then north. Today this is St Werburghs Road, but back then it was Moss Lane. It is still possible to follow this route by picking up St Werburghs Road at Park Brow and walking north to join Kings Road and then along Kingsbrook Road. All of which would have taken us to Dog House Farm, which stood on the site of the present cricket and tennis pavilion. Today this is a walk which takes us past rows of mid-twentieth century housing, but back in 1851 almost our entire journey would have been across open land. There was just one group of houses and this was Moss Cottages, on the south side of what is now Kings Road, between Daventry and Withington Roads. It was home to eight households consisting of 42 people in total, ranging from 65 years of age down to two months. They were mainly families who made their living from the land and so, while there was a joiner, the rest gave their occupations as farmer, a gardener, or agricultural labourer. How big the cottages were is unknown, but it is unlikely they would have had more than four

36

rooms and more likely just two. In the case of two households, this meant cramming ten people into one house and six into another. It was an isolated little community surrounded by fields and ponds in all directions. And some of its inhabitants must have worked for Dog House Farm. This was one of the largest farms in the area and in 1851 John Chorlton farmed 380 acres and employed 18 labourers eight of whom lived on the farm. And somewhere here, in June of 1838 Mary Moore was ‘was robbed and cruelly murdered’. She lived off Chorlton Green and worked at Dog House, taking the garden produce to sell in the city three times a week, in the summer months. On Tuesday June 19th, having walked back from Manchester carrying the money she had made selling the garden fruit, she was stopped, robbed and bludgeoned to death. It was a little after two in the afternoon and she was just 100 yards from the farm. Her body was found later that evening face down in a water filled ditch. She was lying on her face, ‘with her head towards one bank, and her feet to the opposite bank. Her head appeared to be much cut on one side and her bonnet and

cap awry.’ She had died from two blows to her head, which had been delivered by a blunt instrument with such force that her skull had been driven into her brain with death being instantaneous. Her murderer was never convicted, although a number of men were arrested and brought to trial, the evidence proved too weak to find any of them guilty. Dog House Farm survived longer than most. It was only demolished in 1960. The last tenant was Norah Templar who had moved there with her family in 1912 and left forty six years later in 1958. She remembered the farm house as a “historic 300 year old twelve roomed cottage.... Most rooms faced south or west. A large barn and coach house sheltered it from the north and east winds. In the cobbled yard was a pump and trough close to the kitchen.” Nothing of Dog House Farm or the surrounding fields are left, which is a shame because this is the end of our walk.

Sport in Chorlton By Geoff Garnett

Longford Park launches Disc Golf Course - with 9 holes by the end of the year!

The North West’s very first disc golf course is being built at Longford Park and it’s seeking community support to build nine holes by the end of the year.

Disc golf is similar to regular golf except that it’s played with a frisbee! Volunteer project coordinator, Alan Heckman says, “We hope that this project will attract people young and old to use Longford Park, and help everyone develop a feeling of ownership and responsibility for this community space for many years to come. We’re launching a crowdfunding campaign to enable us to raise the profile of MDG and to develop an amazing course that will be completely free for everyone forever. We aren’t just building a disc golf course, we’re building a community!” Manchester Disc Golf is being built

40

by volunteers with the support of Trafford Council, Friends of Longford Park and Didsbury Ultimate Frisbee for Amateurs, with the aim of introducing a new accessible sport for all. The course will be the first in the North West, and the 13th free-toplay permanent course in the UK. With more than 5000 disc golf courses around the world, it’s a sport that’s fast gaining popularity. The Manchester project needs enthusiastic people to play disc golf and raise its profile, help to install and maintain baskets and tees, and funds to complete the development.

If you’d like to get involved contact Shelley Heckman: shelley.heckman@gmail.com 07970 015209 www.manchesterdiscgolf. co.uk/opportunity

Matt delighted to join the MGPC team at Chorlton

Matt Fryatt has a distinguished background in golf, being the son of the highly respected professional, Adrian, whose coaching skills are renowned in the North West. Now he’s looking forward to joining the pro team at Chorlton Golf Club, led by James Curtis at the Manchester Golf Performance Centre.

Matt said: “I began playing at 16 and got down to scratch at 21 when I played in all of the regional and county amateur events. One of the highlights was to break the course record at Warrington with an eight-under-par 63, which included a 28 on the back nine. “I turned professional at 22 and played locally on the Jamega Tour, then I worked at the Mere Resort for five years under Peter Eyre. Now I’ve followed in my father’s footsteps and signed up for the PGA course. I hope that one day I’ll be as successful a coach as he is; Chorlton will certainly give me the opportunity.”
