RHU TWO SET SAIL FOR OLYMPICS 2020 Two sailors from Rhu will be going for gold at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo after Team GB picked some of their first athletes. Charlotte Dobson and Luke Patience, both 33, have been named by the British Olympic Association as members of next year’s squad. Impressively, this is not the first time that Charlotte and Luke, from the local Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, have represented the UK at an Olympics. At London 2012, Luke won silver with then crewmate Stuart Bithell in the 470 dinghy class. Luke was then selected for Rio in 2016, when he and team mate Chris Grube, known as Twiggy, finished fifth.

to make 2020 his hat-trick of Olympic appearances. “I’m ecstatic,” he said. “The reality is I’m just a wee lad from the west coast of Scotland and I’m going to my third Olympics. Getting that news never loses its excitement. I’m so proud.” Luke and Twiggy’s Rio campaign had not been smooth, however. Luke had been due to compete with Elliot Willis, but his crew mate was diagnosed with bowel cancer in late 2015. It was devastating

news for the sailors and left Luke and Twiggy a very short time to train for Brazil. This time, they are confident and ready to go for Tokyo victory. It will be Charlotte’s second Olympics and she has formed a strong partnership with Saskia Tidley for Japan. In Rio with Sophie Ainsworth, Charlotte finished eighth in the 49erFX. Charlotte said: “The sailors are the first Team GB positions to be announced for the Olympics next

year. It’s so good we know early and now we can just concentrate on winning gold.” Another team member heading to Tokyo is Eilidh McIntyre, whose dad Mike McIntyre MBE is originally from Helensburgh. Mike won gold in the men’s two-handed Star class at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and he is honorary commodore of Helensburgh Sailing Club. Eilidh, from Hampshire, will be crewing with a seasoned sailor, Hannah Mills, in the women’s 470. More Olympics information at tokyo2020.org.

Again sailing with Twiggy, Luke is thrilled

George, the now famous feline about town, gave his fans a fright recently when it was reported he had not been home for five days. But thanks to social media, the friendly Helensburgh cat was found 14 miles away on Loch Lomondside. George, who is owned by Dennis and Elizabeth Royal, has become something of a local celebrity thanks to his wanderings about the town, visiting shops and businesses. So, when he went missing one

Tuesday and was still not home a couple of days later, the Royals became very worried. Elizabeth made a Facebook appeal for sightings of the pet – and amazingly that Saturday someone posted a photo of what looked like George, although it was many miles from his home at Firkin Point.

George was homed by the Royals from Cats Protection in Paisley about three years ago. At first, he seemed happy to stay at home and he has become a great companion for Dennis, who suffers from dementia. But then he started going to a bus stop near his house where people made a fuss of him. After that he made daily strolls to other places, such as Tesco, the Argyll Bar, Mulberry Bush Nursery and Helensburgh Toyota. Such is his fame, Jackie Hood, the daughter of Elizabeth and Dennis, has now started a Facebook page for the cat so that people can keep track of his travels and antics. She said: “We’re delighted that he’s back and grateful to the power of Facebook, as well as to Megann Connolly for posting the photo and Pauline and Colin who brought him home.” You can find “George the Helensburgh Cat” on Facebook.

ART HUB PLEA FOR PLASTICS A local arts facility is appealing for members of the public to donate nonrecyclable plastics for an innovative environmentally friendly initiative. Helensburgh Art Hub is requesting empty and clean items, such as crisp packets, plastic bags, food containers, cling film, straws and plastic cutlery, which can be turned into “ecobricks”. The group would also like plastic bottles, sized 750ml to 1 litre, crammed full of the nonrecyclables. The full bottles make an ideal building material due to their durability and sturdiness – and many schools across the country already have ecobrick features in their playgrounds.

She said: “The ecobricks are just a tiny part of what we’re doing. “We’ve got an art gallery and we run a whole host of classes and workshops. This includes

sessions with various vulnerable groups and mostly people with additional support needs. “We’re a not-for-profit organisation and the purpose of what we’re doing is to bring art to the community.” For further information visit helensburgharthub.com or see Helensburgh Art Hub on Facebook.

Karlyn Marshall, from the Helensburgh Art Hub, said: “Ecobricks are a good way of using up non-recyclable plastics and putting them to good use. “We have a programme of workshops that show people how to make the ecobricks and further down the line we will actually make a permanent structure from the ecobricks.” Any dry and clean non-recyclable items that would normally be put

Lorna Brown, the club’s head coach, believes it is Ross’s creative coaching techniques that have attracted more children. He has implemented a tennis programme designed by tennis champion Andy Murray’s former coach, Mark Petchey.

In addition, the club, located on Church Avenue, is keen to create a stronger “community hub”. Lorna said: “We hope that Ross will host more social events, as he did while working abroad, which will re-energise our club. Ross’s arrival and plans, combined with the return of our fitness classes, strengthens our role as a community hub.”

Lorna said: “As an example, during the September blocks the primary three to five class filled within one week of going live. We also had to increase session capacity due to the exceptionally high demand for spaces. Ross with Mark Petchey (left) in Croatia

November 2019 | What's Up Doc?

BOOK YOUR PLACE AT FESTIVAL Organisers of a popular book festival are keen to remind local people to buy tickets to avoid disappointment. The Cove and Kilgreggan Book Festival is now in its sixth year and takes place at Cove Burgh Hall from November 23 to 24. The line up of top names includes Scottish crime writer Denise Mina and Times columnist Melanie Reid, who recently penned the book, The World I Fell Out Of. A more unusual guest is the “writer” Ambrose Parry, the joint alias of best-selling novelist Christopher Brookmyre and his wife Marisa Haetzman.

“Chairing is very important, so we're pleased that Janice Forsyth will be in the chair for Off The Ball presenter Stuart Cosgrove, while BBC Scotland editor Sarah Smith is in conversation with the redoubtable Helena Kennedy QC.” Tickets are available for individual talks or you can buy a weekend pass. See www. coveburghhall.org.uk/whats-on/cove-burgh-hall/bookfestival-2019.

V&A Dundee’s director Philip Long, historian Professor Sir Tom Devine and Off the Ball presenter Stuart Cosgrove will also be appearing.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: ALL BEING WELL…? What is the difference between Health and Well-being? As doctors we are concerned with keeping people as healthy as possible, but clearly this is not the whole story. Health in its simplest sense, is just about not being ill. Well-being is described as “feeling good and functioning well”. The New Economics Foundation, describes a more positive approach by encouraging people to live their best life by doing these five things: Connect – with family, friends, colleagues or neighbours – building connections provides stability in a fast-changing world;

One of the festival’s committee members Ruth Wishart said: “Our sixth year has a really strong line up, with return writers and new faces.

Take Notice – Use all your senses to appreciate what’s around you and take stock from time to

time to reflect on who or what is important to you; Keep learning – find new challenges and experiences – this keeps you young and builds confidence ; Be Active – Regular exercise lifts mood and reduces anxiety as well as staying fit – walking, running cycling, swimming or dancing, it doesn’t matter what; Give – Do something for others when you can, even something small – it will make you feel better, as well as those around you. As people, including GPs, are living busier lives, we could all benefit from paying attention to our well-being!

FESTIVE FAIR CHARITY BOOST Organisers of a popular festive fair are hoping to raise even more funds for a charitable school close to their hearts. The Luss Advent Fair is being run by Luss Estates, owned by Sir Malcolm & Lady Colquhoun, in partnership the village’s Loch Lomond Arms Hotel. Many local businesses support the event. Taking place on November 24, from 11am to 4pm, the fair provides a funds booster for St George’s Ethiopia, a school founded by the Colquhouns to provide free education, school meals, uniforms and health checks to local children in Gondar province. Last year, the event raised more than £2000 for the African school appeal and this year they will be hoping to collect more.

The Advent Fair is held at the hotel and is free to attend. There will be 30 stalls selling local crafts, decorations, gifts and Christmas dinner treats, as well as food and drink offerings, including a winter BBQ. Helensburgh Flowers will be leading a wreath-making workshop (cost is £25) and there will be craft activities for children. In addition, customers can enjoy live music, a tombola organised by Luss Women’s Institute, a homebaking stand by the Luss Church Guild and a luxury raffle, which includes hampers of items donated by every stallholder.

Charity funds will be raised through the raffle, as well as by money paid by stallholders for their tables, the children’s crafts activities and the cost for the space for the wreathmaking workshops. In addition, Loch Lomond Arms Hotel lends two function rooms for free, as well as “donating” staff to support the event. One of the organisers, Claire Ross, said: “We love doing Luss Advent Fair and there will something for everyone. It’s a great way to kick off the festive season.” See lussestates.co.uk and lochlomondarmshotel.com.

But even although we all know how frenetic it can become even the most experienced organisers of the perfect family Christmas can find themselves overwhelmed by what can seem a hugely complex and demanding task – and that at a time of year when the weather outside can be frightful (to coin a phrase). It’s all very well to talk about “planning”, but that rather takes the spontaneity out of things, relegating what should be a happy annual occasion to just another irksome chore. Possibly the best approach is to plan the absolutely unavoidable

basics first, leaving time for shopping and other preparations that could even be – dare to mention it – fun. Inevitably most of us will go online for a fair bit of the annual spend, but a look at what’s available on the doorstep (and at the advertisements in The Community Advertiser) can yield interesting ideas at often valuefor-money prices, and often of the sort of individual gifts that aren’t necessarily available at the click of a mouse. For festive food fare, for example,

you might want to check out the deals at your quality local butcher or poulterer, baker, confectioner, etc – and maybe award yourself some time for a leisurely trawl through one or more of the excellent markets that pop up within easy reach of home at this time of year. From a practical point of view you can set yourself a budget in advance, so you don’t get too carried away – but with this type of shopping you will invariably see items that suddenly “click” as

Then there is the minor but still important detail – the visitor who doesn’t drink much, but is very partial to a nice Fino sherry, or the cousin who is strictly vegetarian or, increasingly more likely these days, the guests who are fully committed to a Vegan diet. You can, of course, if hard pressed, let your fingers do the walking and just order everything online, but that tends to lend a certain dull predictability to a season which should be about individuality and surprises. While pondering how to spend your hard-earned cash - and on what – you might also like to consider how much cooking and washing up you intend to do over the Christmas season. Not everybody fancies the idea of a Christmas Day excursion to some favourite local restaurant, but it can be a welcome relief – and a

treat – for those who will be doing all the cookery on December 25 to be able to enjoy at least one special evening where they don’t have to do anything but relax and enjoy themselves. Nor do you have to restrict these choices to the no doubt excellent traditional Christmas offerings, as a diversion into (for example) Asian, Chinese or Mediterranean cuisine can be a welcome break from delightful but very familiar Scottish fare. Of course a lot of pre-Christmas preparation is always going to be strictly practical – you must catch the last posting date for Uncle Archie in New Zealand, and you must place that special order with the family butcher by a certain date… so best to get the “mustdo’s” out of the way as quickly as possible, giving yourself plenty of time to fine tune your own “perfect Christmas” at something like a leisurely pace. Above all, be sure to have yourself a merry little Christmas – it needn’t be a frenetic last-gasp dash to the shops if you get the basics right, and at the end of it you can congratulate yourself, perhaps with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie, on a “job” that has been not only jolly, but jolly well done.

EARLY FESTIVE CHEER Legal Matters START YOUR with Gill Bowman CHRISTMAS EARLY BA LLB

from Cairns Brown Solicitors

This month: FIREWORKS

© Tom Watt

A local church is hosting an Early Christmas Coffee Morning this month.

A local choir is looking forward to hosting an annual Coffee ’n’ Carols this month.

Helensburgh Parish Church, in Colquhoun Street, is the location for the event on November 16 at 10am.

The Helensburgh Dorian Choir is holding the event on Saturday November 23, from 2pm to 4pm, at Helensburgh Parish Church main hall.

There will be a range of home baking, coffee and tea for sale, as well as a chance to buy some early Christmas gifts. A spokesperson added: “The coffee morning is always a great place for a chat and some early festive fun, too.” The cost of the event is £2. Children are free. To find out more, call the church office on 01436 676 880 or see www. helensburghcos.org.

Eileen Drummond, from the choir, said: “It’s the ideal opportunity to take time to relax over a cup of coffee or tea and a warm mince pie, while listening to Christmas Carols. There will be stalls, too, so people can do some Christmas shopping.” Tickets cost £3 on the door. Note for you diary: A Christmas Concert takes place in the United Reformed Church on Friday December 6 at 7.30 p.m.

With the dark nights well and truly upon us we are already hearing the explosion of fireworks. Gone are the days when it was restricted to the 5th of November and accordingly there has been an increase in the number of injuries and noise complaints associated with Fireworks. The law surrounding the use of fireworks in the UK is set out in the Fireworks Act 2003 and The Fireworks (Scotland) Regulations 2004 hold the specific restrictions applicable to us. This legislation was introduced in an attempt to counteract both the noise nuisance and the injuries sustained. Firstly, no-one under the age of eighteen should be in possession of a firework.

20 | To advertise call Debbie now on 01436 672424

Those over eighteen must not set off fireworks, including sparklers, in any public place. The practical meaning of this is that you can either have a private display in your garden or attend a local public display. No fireworks should be lit between the hours of 11pm and 7am, the only exceptions being Bonfire Night, when the restriction commences at 12am or Chinese New Year, Diwali and Hogmanay when it is 1am. Fireworks must only be purchased from licensed or registered sellers. Failure to comply with the regulations could result in anything from an on the spot fine of £90 to a summary conviction with penalties up to £5,000 or a six month prison sentence.

PANTO TIME FOR THEATRE GROUP FANTASTIC

HELENSBURGH

Helensburgh Theatre Arts Group is busy rehearsing for this year’s pantomime, Aladdin. Performances will take place at the Victoria Halls, Helensburgh, from Thursday December 5 to Saturday December 7, from 7.30pm to 10pm, with an extra matinee performance from 2.30pm to 5pm on the Saturday.

"Fantastic Helensburgh" is the title of a new exhibition featuring the work of local artist Dorothy Whitaker. She said: “You have to have a passion for this and I do.”

The panto has been written by long-term member, Derek Bannon. This year sees Nina Rapallini take the reins as director for the first time. She has adapted the musical parts of the show and added some of her own humour. Nina, who works full time for Enable Scotland, has a busy time ahead with the rehearsals.

Last year, saw the successful addition of a junior chorus to the show. Nina added: “Our club is of huge benefit to children, increasing their confidence, working as a company and learning new skills.” Tickets for Aladdin are available from the Victoria Halls. Prices are £9 for adults and £7.50 for children. There is a special deal if you buy 10, you get one free. See liveargyll.co.uk/facility/victoriahalls.

The show was opened by BBC celebrity Roo Irvine, of "Antiques Road Trip", whose fantastic portrait has been premiered, featuring Roo's gorgeous "girls" Maine Coon cats Mango and Kimichi. The exhibition is in the Helensburgh Library now and runs until December, the free entry exhibition will take the viewer through a world of imagination and fantasy featuring familiar places in Helensburgh through different eyes. All works will be available for sale at the end of the show.

CALL FOR MORE FRIENDSHIP A local charity is marking the start of National Befriending Week with an event that hopes to encourage more people to volunteer.

CEILIDH DANCE

“To increase the support we can give to people we need more befriending volunteers.” Jayne reveals that the service benefits both volunteers and friends. She said: “The mutual sense of kinship gives hope and purpose, which positively impacts the health and well-being of both people.”

Visiting Friends offers a free one-to-one befriending service to people struggling with loneliness.

Helensburgh-based Visiting Friends will host an “informal cuppa” at the café in Waitrose, Cardross Road, on Friday November 1, from 11am onwards. A team from the small charity will be chatting about volunteering with anyone who would like to find out more. They will have literature available, too. Visiting Friends offers a free one-to-one befriending service to

people struggling with loneliness. The service creates carefully matched one-to-one pairings. When a pairing has been made, a client becomes known as a friend. Currently there are 32 “matches”. Now manager Jayne Burnett is keen to increase that number. She said: “The team would love to have 40 matches by early next year. We strive to make a good match rather than just any match.

Volunteers are given full training and support. Jayne says that people tend to just know when it’s the right time to volunteer. She said: “It’s like alchemy and serendipity when it all comes together.” It was a year ago, during National Befriending Week 2018, that the organisation became a registered charity. This year’s Befriending Week campaign focuses on health and wellbeing. Studies have shown that being chronically lonely can increase mortality by up to 30 per cent. To find out more see “Visiting Friends” on Facebook.

FOR CHARITY A caring charity is hosting a fundraising ceilidh dance in Helensburgh this month. The event is organised by Helensburgh & Lomond Carers and takes place at The Commodore Hotel on Friday November 15, from 7.30pm to 11pm. There will be live music and a performance by Highland dancers from the Margaret Rose School of Dance. A light buffet is included in the event price of £8. Christine MacTaggart, a support worker, said: “The fundraiser is to help our charity to provide services for unpaid cares in Helensburgh and Lomond areas.” Tickets are available from the Carers Centre at Lomond House on Lomond Street in Helensburgh. Tel: 01436 673444 or 670555.

ROCKETS TIME AGAIN DOUG ALLAN TO TALK ABOUT WHALES FESTIVE PUD EVENT A popular annual fireworks display takes place this month in Helensburgh. Organised by the Helensburgh & District Round Table, the event will be held at the town’s Pierhead car park on Saturday November 2. There will be stalls selling hot food, ice creams and drinks, as well as “novelties”, from 6.30pm, before a bonfire is lit at 6:45pm. The fireworks, once again by Midnight Storm, start at 7.30pm. Ollie Pritchard, from the Round Table, said: “The event is paid for by all the warm-hearted local people who willingly gave last year. “We’ll be kindly asking again so we can fund next year's display.” See www.helensburghroundtable. org.

A Royal Scottish Geographical Society event plays host to a talk by a renowned wildlife cameraman in Helensburgh this month. Doug Allan, who is best known for his work in polar regions and underwater, has been invited to give a presentation as part of the RSGS’s Inspiring People winter programme. His talk, entitled “Whale Meet Again”, takes place at Victoria Halls, Sinclair Street, Helensburgh, on Thursday November 28 at 7.30pm. Doug is a Scottish filmmaker and award-winning wildlife photographer. His TV credits include Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life and Frozen Planet. Sir David Attenborough once said: “Wildlife cameramen don’t come much more special than Doug Allan.”

Festive fans are invited to join an event that combines history and cookery.

A spokesperson for the RSGS said: “Doug has filmed whales in the Antarctic, off coral reefs, among the giant kelp in California and under the Arctic pack ice. “Finding them depends on cooperation with scientists, skilled boat handlers, patience and a healthy dose of luck. “Come along and join Doug as he shares his most memorable moments with the biggest animals on the planet.” Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite or on the door. The price is £10 for visitors, while RSGS members and students are free. Also see: www.rsgs.org/event/ doug-allan-frsgs-whale-meetagain-helensburgh.

Participants will learn about “Stir-up Sunday” at The Hill House in Helensburgh on November 24 at noon. Stir-up Sunday is the last Sunday before Advent, when families would traditionally come together to prepare the Christmas pudding. The National Trust for Scotland event will reveal the history of the tradition and show you how to prepare a pudding, ready for steaming at home. There will also be a pudding to sample and a glass of mulled wine on offer. The event is £20 per person. See www.nts.org.uk/visit/ events/stir-up-sunday.

award for a consecutive year by Netball Scotland. “To be recognised by our community is a real honour and cements all of the hard work the committee puts in behind the scenes.” Other awards include Primary Young leader: Skye Evans, of Cardross PS; Young Coach: Heather Ferguson, of Bute Ladies Shinty Club; Adult Youth Coach: Laurenne Cameron for coaching shinty; Sporting Achievement of 2019: Castlehill Football Team in Campbeltown; Service to Sport: Helensburgh hockey player Barry Cox; and Community Coach of the Year: Walter Spiers, of Oban Lorne Rugby Football Club.

Groups can apply for up to 100% of the total funding costs for their project or activity from the fund, with a maximum award of £2500 available. Applications for the grant, which covers all of Argyll and Bute, opened on Monday 7 October and the deadline for submission is Friday 6 December. Applications that are agreed to have met the criteria will be scored and recommendations made to the relevant Local Area Committee for a decision to be taken by Elected Members in the spring of 2020. The fund is aimed at supporting community projects and helping to kick start new projects. It is open to all community groups. Applications must be able to evidence direct benefit to the local community. Councillor Rory Colville, Policy Lead for Community Development, said: “I’m pleased that the council is once again committed to

helping excellent project ideas from our communities come to fruition. There will be a lot of good ideas out there that need a financial boost and I encourage any community groups with fresh ideas to apply to the Supporting Communities Fund.” Advice and support on funding is available from the Community Development Team, who can be contacted at 01436 657 647 or via email address communitydevelopment@argyllbute.gov.uk.
