Comedian and chef Hardeep Singh Kohli (pictured centre) out and about promoting the Bearsden Festival which takes place from 10th-19th May

The Bearsden Festival 2019 line-up has been launched with 100 partners coming together to put on 35 events over 10 days this month. The festival, now in its sixth year, takes place from 10th to 19th May. The programme of creativity and the arts offers a wealth of free events focusing on the theme of mental health and well-being. From flagship events hosted by comedian and chef Hardeep Singh Kohli and TV presenter Ali Douglas to a Wellness Zone for relaxation therapies, the promise is “there will be something for all.

The award-winning author Lisa Ballantyne and health blogger Alex Murray-Reynolds will show festival goers how to develop creative writing and journaling skills, while author Sasha Greene will launch her new novel, Something Like Happy. The grand Opening Night at Bearsden Academy on May 10 will also feature a ceremony when the winners of the Community Awards will be announced.

The boys, from Bearsden Academy, heading off to Botswana and Zambia in July are raising funds for #AYE2019 with a fundraiser on 1st June in Milngavie Town Hall

An African volunteer project, organised by Bearsden teenagers and dads, is inviting local people to a special fundraising event. The aim of the fundraiser on June 1 in Milngavie Town Hall is to raise enough money to pay for a new grade-two classroom, which will be located in Livingstone, Zambia. Karen Wright, a spokesperson for Africa Youth Experience (#AYE2019) project, said: “The event, from 7.30pm to 11.30pm, will include entertainment, a raffle and a surprise guest supporter. There will be a DJ and live music from local band the Cassettes. “We need to raise £5500 and we hope that as many people as possible will come along.” In July, the sons-and-dads group, who have known each other

since the boys started P1, will take a month’s trip to Botswana and Zambia. The boys all attend Bearsden Academy. At the heart of the project is a week’s stay with the charity Home For AIDS Orphans. The not-forprofit organisation works with the community to improve the living conditions of vulnerable people, especially children who have been orphaned by AIDS. The group includes three generations of the Wright family, granddad Roger, dad Jimmy, and son Tiaan. Jimmy, who was born in Zambia and lived with his parents in Botswana, is the trip’s lead. The boys

will volunteer with the orphans organisation, helping to build new hut homes, offering support and coaching children in rugby. Peter Liddle, deputy head of teaching at Bearsden Academy, said: “The school is extremely proud of the boys for developing a unique project. We’re keen to recognise their leadership of the project and we look forward to them passing on their experiences to others.” #AYE2019 has gained sponsorship from Scottish company KleerKut, branded clothing from PSL Team Sports, branding and design from Push Print and a website from Serial Affinity. To find out more about the fundraiser and to buy tickets at £15. See www.aye2019.com.

Mortgage Matters:

Brexit and Your Mortgage

Joinery | Roofing | Building

Is it time to fix your mortgage rate? With the current level of uncertainty, many homeowners are now looking to fix their mortgage rate for the next three to five years against any potential interest rate rises which could occur as a result of Brexit.

Jayne Daly Mortgage Advisor

Many borrowers are now drifting away from the traditional 2-year fixed term rate deals as they feel that they won’t provide them with enough security during these unpredictable times. If all this speculation concerns you, you could consider re-mortgaging and moving to a longer term fixed-rate mortgage.

Is a Fixed rate deal right for you?

Fixed rate mortgages are not suitable for everyone. If your circumstances are likely to change in the short term, careful consideration should be taken before making a final decision as these deals often come with early repayment charges. If interest rates were to fall after Brexit, you could find yourself paying more than you need to. If you want to take advantage of any potential rate reductions and if you are willing to take the risk should rates go up, then it may be worthwhile considering a tracker rate. In total, seven East Dunbartonshire secondary schools were listed in a table compiled by The Herald newspaper.

Other schools in the region include Bishopbriggs Academy (66%) Lenzie (61%), Kirkintilloch High (56%) and Turnbull High (55%).

Simon Bevis, who is the managing director at R-Biopharm Rhone (RBR), is delighted by plans for the construction work at his company’s premises.

R-Biopharm Rhone (RBR) is a manufacturer of tests to improve food safety. The company has been in Glasgow since 1986.

He said: “The extension will be used to house extra laboratory space, research and development facilities and deliver additional production capabilities.

They are a major exporter of diagnostic tests for the food industry, with 75 per cent of their turnover coming from overseas markets.

“Extra space will also be given to new offices and meeting rooms.

Phase one of the extension project at the science park on the edge of Bearsden is expected to be completed in July, while phase two, which will be a major reorganisation of the existing space, is hoped to be finished by September.

“In addition, the project will help to facilitate the creation of high value jobs in research and development, cell culture and production, as well as allowing us to bring outsourced areas of expertise in-house.”

CRICKET SIGNS NEW SPONSOR A local cricket club is delighted to announce The Talbot Arms in Milngavie as the sponsor for the 2019 season. Milngavie Cricket Club was presented with a sponsorship cheque from licensee at the pub, Lynne Balmain. Club chair Richard McKinlay said: “We are very pleased to renew our partnership with the Talbot. “Our club has a long relationship with the pub, which has given us a lot of support over the years.” The sponsorship will help the cricket club to equip their home ground for the coming season. Milngavie Cricket Club was founded 14 years ago and practises indoors at West of

Scotland Cricket Club, Hamilton Crescent, in Partick, Glasgow, on Mondays at 9pm. They are always happy to hear from adults who would like to play the game of cricket regardless of ability. The club will play some of their home matches this season in Bearsden. The season started with a friendly match against the BBC on April 24. Midweek league matches commence this month. Anyone with an interested in cricket who would like to support the club in any way is invited to contact the club on 07810 641574.

The council has announced revised opening times for the Bearsden Community Hub. Since Easter, the hub, which offers services such as Council Tax, benefits, registration, licensing, housing and general council enquiries, will open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. A recent review of earlier and later opening times, as well as Saturday opening hours, concluded that footfall was too low to continue. The same will apply to three other East Dunbartonshire hubs in Kirkintilloch, Lennoxtown and Bishopbriggs. Outwith the Monday to Friday opening hours, residents can continue to access a range of services online by visiting www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk or by calling 0300 123 4510 in emergency situations.

10TH BIRTHDAY CONCERT

ADVERTISE

HERE

FROM AS LITTLE AS

£38

Gordon John Baillie Kelvin Choir will be perfoming a 10th anniversary spring concert in Kingsborough Sanctuary this month

A Bearsden choir is looking forward to celebrating a milestone anniversary with a special concert this month. Kelvin Choir, which rehearses in Bearsden, will perform a 10th annual spring concert on May 18 at 7.30pm in Kingsborough Sanctuary (formerly Hyndland Parish Church) on Hyndland Road, Glasgow. The concert, directed by Edwin Hillier, is set to include a programme of works such as those by John Rutter, Michael Tippett, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Karl Jenkins. Rachel Munro, from the choir, says: “We are keen to celebrate our 10th anniversary with a spring

concert. We hope many local people will attend.” The mixed voice choir was founded in 2009, although it can trace it roots to Bearsden Training Choir, which first formed in 2005. Today, there are around 70 Kelvin Choir members. They meet every Tuesday night in the Upper Hall of St Andrew’s church in Bearsden. The choir enjoys singing a varied repertoire of choral works and in the past they have performed Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem, as well as works by

Bach, Vivaldi, Britten and Faure. Last year, they also performed Durufle’s Requiem under the baton of their then new music director Edwin Hillier.

PAINTER & DECORATOR

The choir is always happy to welcome new members. Rachel says: “There are no auditions and singers simply require enthusiasm, energy and commitment. A sense of humour, some choral experience and some basic music reading skills are also an advantage.”

What we do...

Tickets for the concert, including refreshments, are £15 for adults and £6 for children/under 26. They can be purchased from choir members or on the door.

A MARATHON CHALLENGE

Late News Tuesday 7th Sculpt Callanetics: MAE Technique

Gordon, 61, is GHK Rugby Club’s secretary. He said: “Jim’s the most inspiring person I know, so my main focus has been not to let him down.

Jim Taylor, pictured right, from Bearsden matched Gordon Hollerin's London marathon achievement on his hand bike

A Bearsden man who broke his neck while playing rugby has taken on an ambitious London Marathon challenge for charity. Despite being paralysed from the chest down, Jim Taylor cycled the 26.2 miles on his hand bike. Aged 23, Jim’s rugby playing career was tragically cut short after an injury sustained while playing for Kelvinside Academicals. He has been in wheelchair ever since. Jim came up with the marathon idea to spur on his friend ahead of his own 26.2-mile charity bid in London on April 28. The 63-year-old wanted to match Gordon Hollerin, of

Newton Mearns, mile for mile by vigorously cycling his arms for a marathon distance on his homebased road roller. They are raising money for Hearts+Balls Charitable Trust, which supports rugby players who have been impacted by serious injury or illness. Jim, who watched the marathon on his TV while arm cycling, said: “I have done many sporting challenges over the years but this has to be the hardest one to date.”

“I have certainly faced my own fair share of injuries during more than 30 years of playing rugby, but I’m incredibly lucky to be in a position that I’m able to run a marathon. “Hearts+Balls is a wonderful charity that supports those who aren’t so lucky.” Jim, who is Glasgow Warriors partnerships manager, received the hand bike from the charity to help him to be more active. He said: “The charity has supported my family and I in so many ways over the years, and the recent donation of a road roller has been life changing.” To donate to the cause see www.heartsandballs.org.uk

MAJOR NEW PLANS FOR BEARSDEN Boclair Academy could be replaced as part of East Dunbartonshire Council's new 10-year Capital Programme

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: GOOD GRIEF…

A new 10 Year Capital Programme revealed by the council is set to include two major developments in Bearsden. There is a commitment to build a new Boclair Academy, as well as a replacement Allander Leisure Centre.

to deliver an estimated income of £63.1 million, as well as other “efficiencies and cost reduction actions”.

The Capital Programme is part of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Revenue Budget for the coming financial year.

Joint Council Leader Andrew Polson said: “While we remain constrained by a declining revenue budget, our ambitious and expanded capital programme delivers substantial new facilities across the area, including a new £30 million Boclair Academy with construction starting next year.”

The council is facing a funding gap of more than £87 million, which has been removed from the budget over the last 10 years. Financial planning projections also show that by 2023 a further £41 million in savings will be required. However, the council has plans to bridge the funding balance, including money raised in part by a Council Tax rise of 3.95 per cent

What's Up Doc?

Joint Council Leader Vaughan Moody added: “The capital programme also brings forward the construction of a replacement £33 million Allander Leisure Centre to 2020.”

When people suffer loss, such as death in the family, failed relationship or job loss, they often experience grief as a range of emotions. They may go to the doctors, worried that they are having difficulty coping, or are unwell. There are five stages of grief. When this is explained, it can help reassure that the reaction is normal, and time may be all that is required. These stages are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Often people are initially numb and struggle to accept what has happened. This can act as a bit of a “shock-absorber”. Anger may be directed either

at the person who has gone or others, and bargaining can take the form of “what if” questions in our minds. People are often depressed for a period of time after a loss, and this is normal. It can come with hopelessness and can last for months, but finally acceptance can allow people to get back to some normality, and while not replacing what has been lost, helps people rebuild their lives. Loss is something we all have to face at some point, so understanding the normal reactions to this can help to make sense of emotions at difficult times!

Baldernock Garden Club's popular Annual Plant Sale takes place on 11th May

A local gardening club is returning to Milngavie this month with another plant sale, which it hopes will prove as popular as before.

“The choice is wide from alpines to herbaceous to shrubs and the occasional small tree. And all plants are sold at extremely reasonable prices.”

to display the plants and lots of space for the customers to move around. It is a popular sale.”

The Baldernock Gardening Club Annual Plant Sale takes place on Saturday May 11 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm in Milngavie Town Hall. This is the second year the sale has been held at the venue and the club believes this contributed to the success of last year’s event.

All the plants on sale, apart from one section of bedding plants, are grown by the members and taken as cuttings or plant-splits from their own gardens. The array of plants on offer range from the exotic to traditional.

Willie Anderson, chairman of the club, said: “Last year, we were able to get everything under one roof, with plenty of room

Willie added: “The provenance and quality of the plants on sale is excellent, with many plants not often seen in garden centres.

Another popular part of the sale is the home baking made by the members. Customers can buy the cakes to enjoy with a hot drink in the tea room. Baldernock Gardening Club was founded three decades ago in the local parish of Baldernock before moving to Milngavie in 2011 after outgrowing its premises. The club members meet on the first Tuesday of each month from September to May. The annual sale raises funds to support the club throughout the rest of the year. BIG SPRING NEW ATTRACTIONS AT MUGDOCK CLEAN UP Some 55 volunteers, including staff from Tesco and McDonald’s, turned out for a Big Spring Clean in Milngavie recently. They collected 82 bags of litter in Craigton Woods, Lennox Park, car parks and streets. The event was organised by the Clean Sweep branch of Milngavie in Bloom as part of a Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign.

Milngavie in Bloom member Rona MacLeod said: “The volunteers had great enthusiasm and it was thanks to them that so much litter was collected. The litter was taken away by the council, leaving Milngavie a cleaner place to live.” The Clean Sweep group organise a work party twice a month. See Milngavie in Bloom on Facebook.

Mugdock Country Park has added a new BBQ hut and a children's Toadstool Trail

Mugdock Country Park has unveiled two new attractions for families amid news of its four-star tourism rating. The popular local park has created a new barbecue hut for families and groups, as well as a children's Toadstool Trail. The latest hut complements the existing BBQ sites and provides an indoor alternative for up to 20 people. The Toadstool Trail, which was funded through Tesco Bags of Help, takes small children on a tour of woodland creatures, with information panels and a quiz. Meanwhile, VisitScotland also confirmed that the park has retained its four-star rating. The tourism organisation praised the "excellent standard of visitor experience" and "hard work" put

in by everyone involved to ensure it kept its grading. Jim Gibbons, chair of Mugdock Country Park Joint Management Committee, said: “I'm delighted to welcome these new attractions to the park and I'm sure they will prove popular with our many visitors. “I'm also pleased to acknowledge that Mugdock has retained its four-star rating. We won't be resting on any laurels though -because our aim now is to secure five stars." For more information on events and attractions at Mugdock see www.mugdock-country-park.org. uk or call 0141 956 6100.

Legal Matters with Julie Millen from Millen Solicitors

This month: RIGHTS OF CO-HABITEES People in Scotland regularly use the term “common law wife or “common law husband. These terms in fact belong to a time long forgotten where co-habitation was frowned upon and unmarried couples often held themselves out to be married to friends, neighbours and even family members. The common law of Scotland protected such couples upon separation or death. However, for the common law to apply couples had to prove that the wider community, in fact, believed them to be married. The position of modern cohabitants was not codified until 2006 with the advent of the Family Law (Scotland) Act that year. In terms of that Act, co-habitants now have rights in certain property; have the right to apply for financial provision following separation, and;

T. TOWNSLEY

have the right to apply for a share of the Estate in the event of the death of their co-habitee. The Act does not, however, place co-habiting couples on the same footing as married couples. Cohabitants still do not have the same rights as married couples and, even now, almost 13 years after the coming into force of the Act, recent Court decisions continue to demonstrate that co-habitees’ rights still fall short of those enjoyed by their married counterparts. In addition, there are very strict time limits within which to present claims. Upon separation, claims must be presented to the Court within one year and following death, claims must be presented to the Court within 6 months. Co-habitants must not allow the time limits to pass while negotiations continue. To do so, is fatal to their claims.

ROCK GARDEN CONTEST

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman This month:

STAY NOURISHED’ – HEALTHY EATING IN OLDER AGE – PART 3

How can you help tackle malnutrition? An unusual competition that will judge a variety of rare and extraordinary plants is being held in Milngavie this month. The Scottish Rock Garden Club: West of Scotland Group brings the show to Milngavie Town Hall on Saturday May 4, from 11.30am to 3.30pm. The event includes more than 100 competitive classes of flowers and plants, mostly alpine mountain, woodland and moorland, originating from some of the wildest and most inhospitable regions of the world. Most of the classes are for members only, although there is a non-member section. The event will also include sale stalls. The Scottish Rock Garden Club was founded in Edinburgh in 1933 by a small group of enthusiasts who were interested

in promoting the cultivation of alpine and rock garden plants. Originally formed to host meetings and shows, over the years the SRGC has added a journal and conferences along with an international seed exchange. Now a registered charity, the club has grown with thousands of enthusiastic members in 38 countries worldwide. The West of Scotland group is one of many in the UK. For further details about the competition, contact Richard Green, the show’s secretary, on 01360 440701, or email: glasgow.show@gmail.com. Also see: www.srgc.net.

Our role is to help share knowledge and to be able to recognise those at risk so that carers and families can take action.

PREVENTING MALNUTRITION 1 Plan meals according to changing food choices and tastes.

7 Avoid rushing or coercing someone to eat – gentle persuasion is better.

2 Keep mealtimes interesting – aromas stimulate appetite, encourage loved ones to get involved whilst cooking or preparing.

8 Avoid calorie-free or low-fat products unless advised by a doctor.

3 Dine in comfort, remove distractions & create a nice atmosphere. 4 Think about portion sizes if appetites reduce – finger foods can replace traditional meals if required. 5 Encourage healthy snacks and drinks regularly. 6 Help with shopping lists or shopping trips.

9 Is there any physical or financial support with preparing meals? 10 Avoid using the term ‘malnutrition’, ‘Keeping well’ is less frightening. 11 Confront the myth – Weight loss is NOT a normal part of the ageing process. 12 Ensure family and friends are up to date with the changes in food choices and preferences.

The Perfect Retreat

Stuart and Debbie Mainland enjoyed a romantic break at Portavadie Loch Fyne on Argyll’s Secret Coast.

an incredible vista, watching the clouds roll over distant hills and the yachts sail past on the sea loch.

Just a 90-minute drive from our Helensburgh home, yet seemingly a world away, Portavadie immediately felt like the perfect place to escape, relax and recharge. The holiday resort is located on the west shore of the Cowal Peninsula with stunning views across Loch Fyne and to the neighboring Kintyre Peninsula. We discovered that there is so much to do at Portavadie that we could easily have escaped the hustle and bustle of our work and family lives for a week or more.

The Leisure Experience includes heated outdoor spa and infinity pools, indoor swimming pool, kids splash pools and a sauna, or why not treat yourself to their award winning Spa Experience.

Our accommodation was in the newly built Hideaway, a secluded romantic retreat overlooking the marina, with outdoor hot tub and wood burning stove. It was a truly memorable place to stay and is perfect for a honeymoon, anniversary or just a couple of days relaxation. Wellbehaved dogs are allowed, too. We were ideally placed to access one of the star attractions at Portavadie, the outdoor infinity pool. It was amazing to sit and swim in the heated pool looking out at

If you enjoy outdoor activities, and we do, Portavadie is brilliantly located on what’s known as Argyll’s Secret Coast. There was so much to choose from on the doorstep, including walking, cycling, mountain biking, sailing, golf and kayaking, as well as visiting local attractions, such as

castles, botanical gardens and museums. And after being busy doing things, we returned to Portavadie to enjoy more rest and relaxation, as well as excellent food and drink. The Lodge Kitchen was a lovely, informal place for an evening meal and, for a treat, we dined at the Marina restaurant, which has a 2 AA Rosette award. The café at the pool area has hand-made pizzas and home-churned ice cream. After a rejuvenating short break we were reluctant to leave, but we will be back, perhaps with the kids and dog next time, or maybe just ourselves!

A local trail running race sold out all 300 entries in less than a week. The popular 8.4-mile race takes place on the West Highland Way and on trails at Mugdock Country Park on Sunday June 2.

“We now have a waiting list with names being added to that. It’s proving to be a very popular wee event.”

It is organised by the 20th Glasgow (1st Milngavie) Scout Group and any funds raised from the event will go towards much-needed improvements and repairs to the Scout Hall and its grounds.

The fastest time for the race is Del Young who ran 52 minutes and 10 seconds in 2016. The fastest female also scored her time of 1:03:12 in the same year.

Graeme Reid, who founded the race some five years ago, said: “The entries sold out in a record-breaking time. “We opened on the Monday and had sold out by the Saturday night. That’s a record by several weeks.

One of the big highlights of the race, as well as the scenic trails, is the post-race cake. Graeme said: “All finishers receive a medal and as much tea, coffee and cake as they can eat! The cake is very popular.” To join the waiting list visit: www.entrycentral.com/ Milngavie-Trail-Race.

CONCERT FOR 50th YEAR A special anniversary event is set to celebrate 50 years of a local Gaelic language and heritage group. On May 10, Comunn an Taobh-an-Iar will host a 50th anniversary concert in Milngavie Town Hall. Guest performers will include the Bearsden Fiddlers, as well as a variety of other artists.

It was on June 18, 1969, that a group of residents in Bearsden and Milngavie formed Comunn an Taobhan-Iar with the overall aim of promoting the culture and language of their Highland heritage. The Bearsden Fiddlers has a strong connection with the association because they were initially formed by players who were associated with Comunn an Taobh-an-Iar.

The group’s objectives are to promote, uphold and foster the Gaelic language, as well as the music and cultural heritage of the Gael. The group’s president, Peter MacDonald, said: “For the sake of our Gaelic language, music and culture I hope that Comunn an Taobh-an-Iar will continue for many years to come."

The association has, among other things, offered the facilities to members to study the Gaelic language, music, literature, arts and crafts and the culture of the Highlands and Islands.

Ben View Antiques aim is to bring affordable good quality antiques and retro furniture to our customers at realistic prices. We want our furniture to be used in the future as much as it was in the past.

Tickets for the 50th anniversary concert cost £10 and are available from the secretary Marion MacLeod by calling 0141 772 4932.

In the beginning, there were also several children’s classes for learning Gaelic. Although these no longer take place, Comunn an Taobh-an-Iar still support the Bearsden Young Fiddlers.

There were three finals matches, the gents, Calum Kidd versus Gordon Cameron; the seniors, Dougie Maclean v. Jimmy Young; and the juniors, sister and brother Kerry Sim v. Ross Sim. The winners were Calum, Dougie and 14-yearold Kerry.

“Kerry is 14 and Ross is just 10 and they played very well considering the other finals in play and the spectators watching.

Syd Watson, convener of the new members’ committee at the club, said: “It was an entertaining afternoon of high quality bowls in all games.
