WATER QUALITY REPORT For Otsego Township - 2011 This report covers the drinking water quality for Otsego Township for the calendar year 2011. This information is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided to you in 2011. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state standards. Your water comes from three groundwater wells and is treated with liquid chlorine to provide water system disinfection. The Township has a 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tank, and an emergency water supply interconnection with the cities of Plainwell and Otsego. The State performed an assessment of our source water in 2003 to determine the susceptibility or the relative potential of contamination. The susceptibility rating is on a seven-tiered scale from "very-low" to "very-high" based primarily on geologic sensitivity, water chemistry and contaminant sources. The susceptibility of our source has been determined to be high by the Department of Environmental Quality. We are making efforts to protect our sources. The Township completed the wellhead protection program to protect the groundwater resource serving the Township’s wells. Contaminants and their presence in water: Drinking Water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). Vulnerability of sub-populations: Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune systems disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). Sources of Drinking Water: The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Our water comes from wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial Contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife. Inorganic Contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming. Pesticides & Herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture and residential uses. Radioactive Contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. Organic Chemical Contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff and septic systems. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water, which provide the same protection for public health. WATER QUALITY DATA The table below lists all the drinking water contaminants that we detected during the 2011 calendar year. The presence of these contaminants in the water does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done January 1 – December 31, 2011. The State allows us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year. All of the data is representative of the water quality, but some are more than one year old. Terms and abbreviations used below: Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. N/A: Not applicable. ND: Not detectable at testing limit. ppm: parts per million or milligrams per liter. pCi/I: picocuries per liter (a measure of radioactivity). ppb: parts per billion or micrograms per liter. Monitoring and Reporting Requirements: The State and EPA require us to test our water on a regular basis to ensure its safety. During the monitoring period from January 1, 2011 to September 30, 2011 we did not take the required number of routine monitoring samples for nitrates. This violation did not pose a threat to the quality of the drinking water. Otsego Township has corrected the sample monitoring violation by performing sampling on May 1, 2012 which brings the Township back into compliance. We will update this report annually and will keep you informed of any problems that may occur throughout the year, as they happen. Doris EDSON AGE 77 - OTSEGO
Doris passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Edson was born June 2, 1935 to Raymond and Helen Wells. For almost 20 years she was employed with Kal-Equip, Alan Tech, Parker-Hannifin and finally at Hoffman House, in Allegan, which she later purchased and operated until she was 75. In her leisure time she enjoyed going for drives and looking for wildlife. Doris attended the Otsego Church of God. On May 17, 1952 in Otsego she married Harlie Edson, II, who died May 31, 1999. Also preceding her in death were an infant son, Michael, and her son, Harlie Edson, III. Surviving are her daughter, Cathy (Rick) Morrison of Otsego; two grandchildren, Angie (Scott) Garner of Otsego and Chad (Shawn) Collick of Coleman, MI; seven greatgrandchildren, whom she adored; her special friend for the past 12 years, George Cox; several siblings, including a special sister, Hazel Stewart of Otsego; many nieces and nephews. Friends may meet with her family beginning at 10 A.M. Saturday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Stephen J. Burrow officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Doris may be made to the Borgess Foundation for Borgess Hospice. Terrie was born July 8, 1951 to Cleo and Margaret Belden, died June 23, 2012 after a sudden stroke. Mrs. Wood was the proprietor of Alterations & Sew Forth in Otsego, MI. She was a respected seamstress, a master of pie crusts, a life-long Tigers fan, and an avid reader. She was a warm and caring wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and friend. She made costumes for school musicals and dance recitals. She willingly produced pie squares for family gatherings, popcorn for street fairs, and scones for anyone who wanted to squeeze onto her porch to watch parades pass by. Most importantly, her skills and demeanor made women feel like the beautiful brides they were meant to be. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Carl Wood; her father, Cleo Belden; her brother, Lawrence Belden and his wife, Sue (both of Allegan); her daughters, Kathaleen Wood and her husband, Patrick Thompson (Southfield, Michigan), Amanda Burns and her husband, Andys (Delaware, Ohio), and Sarah Alling and her husband, Andrew (Otsego, Michigan); and her grandchildren, Maryjane Elizabeth Alling and Broderick Carlin Thompson. She also leaves behind many friends and relations whom she loved and who will miss her. A gathering in memory of Mrs. Wood will be held July 8, 2012 from 1pm to 4pm at VFW Post 3030, 124 North Farmer Street, Otsego. At the first sign of people, Jethro shakes all over with excitement. He jumps up to hug people, and wants to give kisses and little love nips because he thinks all people are the best things that could come into his life. Jethro thinks the more enthusiasm and love he gives, maybe finally, he'll get to go to his new home. Jerri passed away Saturday, June 23, 2012, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Blood was born September 14, 1942 in Kalamazoo to Jocko and Marie (Hoeness) Blakeman and was a lifelong resident of the area. For many years she was employed with Borgess-Pipp Hospital, retiring when she turned 50. Jerri like to watch the Detroit Tigers, Verlander was her favorite, and was a dedicated fan of Days of Our Lives soap opera. In her leisure time she loved going to bingo, baking, crafts, sewing, decorating sugar cookies, going to movies and shopping. She was always gardening and loved working with her flowers, watching birds and always making sure they had food. Jerri had a great sense of humor, was a very strong person, both inside and out. She was caring and giving, no matter her limitations, always helping with potlucks, bake sales or just lending an ear. She was a cancer survivor and despite her limitations, she would always do exercise class and crafts. She was a loving wife, mom and friend. On July 24, 1965 in Allegan she married Jerry Lee Blood and they had celebrated 46 years together. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and a daughter, Ken Blood of Byron Center and Crissy Blood of Kalamazoo; a sister-in-law, Sandi Weiso; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and their husbands, Medora (Harry) Winter, Wava (Herman) Hartwig, Donna (Roy) Norton; and a brother, Jack Weiso. In keeping with her wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to her family or to the charity of your choice.
