One of 14 kids, he grew up on a family farm, working with mules and by hand in those long, hot, Alabama days As soon as he turned eighteen, Jim headed to Michigan, joining three of his brothers Jim arrived in Plainwell in November of 1951 Soon after, he got his first job on a farm just east of Plainwell Jim started out walking to and from work that winter On October 24, 1953, he married Norma Edson, and together they had two sons Jim worked at various jobs in furniture and paper making from Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo In the early 1960s, while still working at a paper mill in Kalamazoo, he started an automobile detailing shop in Otsego, where he worked with his wife Norma In 1966 he purchased some excavating equipment from his father-in-law and thus started a 36-year career in his own excavating business until his retirement in 2002 For many years Jim enjoyed rebuilding old tractors and entering them in the Otsego and Plainwell Memorial Day parades At one time he had as many as seven tractors in the parades Some of his biggest delights in life were his grandkids and great-grandkids On April 15, 2023, Jim passed away at home from heart failure He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Cassandra, wife Norma, his parents, several brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews He is survived by his sons Tim and Jim, Pam McQueer (in his words "the daughter he never had ), grandkids: Trisha (Joey) Hanson, Amanda Campbell, James Campbell, 10 great-grandkids and many nieces and nephews At his request cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral Donations can be made in honor of Jim to St Jude Children's Hospital, his favorite charity
Douglas Dean DURYEA AGE 87 - OTSEGO, MI
Douglas Dean Duryea went to be with the Lord on December 30, 2022 Doug was born on July 21, 1935, to Ralph and Vivian (Gibson) Duryea Doug married Marie Genther on January 5, 1957 Although they later divorced, they had 4 wonderful children: Jerri, Raymond, Sarah, and Benjamin On August 15, 1987 Doug married Shirley Dines Shirley added 3 daughters to the family Sadly, Shirley passed away on September 6, 2017 Later, the family continued to grow when Doug fell in love and married Sandra Smith on May 25, 2019 and Sandra’s three daughters became part of the family Doug is survived by his wife Sandra; his children: Ray (Eddie Buitrago) Duryea and Sarah (Eddie) Burgen; and Shirley’s three daughters: Lyn (Charlie) Shumaker, Vickey (Kevin) Christopher and Debbie (Tom) Benzie He is also survived by Sandra’s daughters: Michelle (Gregory) Drew, Yvonne Leggett and Leanna (Javan) Holman Doug also leaves behind his three sisters: Jacque (Jim) James, Lu Ann Cooke and Wende (Jim) Coffindaffer; 21 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his children: Jerri Remynse and Benjamin Duryea Doug grew up in Hopkins, Michigan He was raised on a horse farm where he drove a team of horses and later progressed to tractors He graduated from Hopkins High School in 1953 After high school, Doug went straight into an apprenticeship at GM as a tool and die maker He went into the Army in 1954 where he served his country until 1956 He was honorably discharged and went back to GM where he became a supervisor He retired from GM after almost 45 years of service
Family was a huge part of Doug’s life He could always be found with the camcorder or camera documenting every moment with his family and friends Doug had a cabin in the Northern Michigan town of White Cloud The cabin has been handed down and is still in the family today Many memories were made there Doug always carried his planner in his front shirt pocket and would take notes on all the family and their activities He would always do his best to be a part of every activity or event he was invited to He would also make up a calendar for everyone each year that had all the birthdays, anniversaries etc Everyone in the family would get personalized Christmas cards as well as birthday cards every year without fail; all made on his home computer He loved family reunions and enjoyed recording all kinds of family facts and data After retirement, he began woodworking and fell in love with it He would make marble game boards for all of his family members He loved being able to use those boards to play marbles with his family and friends He made countless other hand crafted gifts and creations out of wood over the years Doug wintered in Florida and enjoyed being a part of the Molokai community of friends There he met Sandra while playing shuffleboard and asked her out to lunch During lunch they realized they shared a lot of the same beliefs and values They became best friends, fell in love and were married Church was a big part of Doug’s life He had a strong faith and served on many boards and committees as well as supporting missionaries He lived out his faith with his family He always prayed before meals and led by example Doug was kind and generous He was hardworking and put others ahead of himself Following his wishes, cremation has taken place A celebration of life is being planned for Saturday, May 20 at 2:00p m at the Allegan United Methodist Church; 409 Trowbridge St (269) 673-4236 The gathering will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 at the same location

Sally Krohn passed away on 12/23/2022 in her hometown of Kalamazoo Sally was born 06/27/1933 to Howard and Lola (Sims) Kurtz in Cook County Illinois during the heart of the great depression Shortly thereafter her family left the bustling city when Howard and Lola packed up and moved Sally and her older sister Nancy (Roberts) to Kalamazoo where Howard had found work at a papermill Kalamazoo quickly became home for Sally She grew up being very close with Nancy She was a social butterfly and eager learner, graduating from Western State High In 1952, Sally went on a double date with a friend and met a young sailor, Eugene Krohn The two fell in love and when Eugene returned from deployment in the Korean War, he brought back a diamond ring and a marriage proposal, which Sally gladly accepted The next few decades would be busy for Sally and Gene as they were blessed with three children, Nanette, Katherine, and Kristopher While Gene pursued education and work, Sally held a variety of jobs working at a Bakery, Michigan Bell Telephone, Plainwell Paper, Parker Hannifin, and Pipp Hospital Sally, who was an avid reader, found her most satisfying work when she became the co-owner and co-operator of Books-N-Things in Downtown Otsego Sally cherished her family and friends and always spent her spare time engaged in activities that involved both Many nights and afternoons were spent camping, playing cards, quilting, or playing with the bell choir at the First United Methodist Church in Plainwell Upon retirement, Sally and Gene took many trips to Florida, usually accompanied by family and friends Sally had a legendary sweet tooth and was known for frequent visits to Plainwell Ice Cream and a well-stocked candy dish which was frequently hidden from Gene and her grandchildren Most notably, Sally was known for being a warm and loving wife, mother and grandmother who adored her family and would unselfishly support and help her family in any way that she could Sally is survived by her children: Katherine (Dennis) Hageman of Plainwell and Kristopher (Katherine) of Louisville Kentucky as well as her four grandchildren and two great grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, daughter Nanette (Guyon) and Eugene, her husband of 58 years A memorial service will be held at the Avink, McCowen & Secord funeral home; 120 S Woodhams St in Plainwell on May 15th, 2023 Visitation at 10:30 with the service following at 11:00 A M The family would like to invite all who wish to attend For those looking to make a memorial in honor of Sally, the family suggests the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Westwood United Methodist Church (538 Nichols Road, Kalamazoo MI 49006)

Rocky passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 20th, 2023 He will be greatly loved and missed by many Rocky was born on December 9th, 1982 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Stanley and Terry Uminn Rocky enjoyed many things in life He worked at many places in his life He was a great son, brother, husband, dad, and friend In his free time he loved hunting, fishing, playing guitar, looking for mushrooms and spending time with friends and family He also enjoyed listening to music, collecting rocks and coins and telling stories
He truly loved spending time with his kids, watching movies, going to the lake and coaching football
These are just a few of many hobbies and interests he enjoyed In May 2019, Rocky married his Sweetheart of 10 years, Casey Uminn, who survives, and she blessed him with four children: Jennifer Kuehl, James, John and Joshua Uminn Also surviving Rocky are his siblings, Ben (Nikki) Uminn and Amanda Haaksma, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews Rocky is preceded in death by his parents According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held at a later time to celebrate Rocky's life

Chip is the definition of a diamond in the rough He came to the Allegan County Animal Shelter as a lost dog and was never reclaimed He was brought in covered in wounds and scars with an ear that appears to have healed incorrectly after being broken It’s not known what he endured, but despite the hardship he is a total sweetie! The shelter’s medical team has estimated he s about four and a half years old Chip loves people and wants to be close He's ver y affectionate, but definitely leans in (literally) on people for reassurance He's a pretty chill dude who enjoys a nice stroll and laying around chewing on a Nylabone This handsom e m an could potentially join a home that already includes other dogs and/or cats! If there is a dog in the family, a meet and greet will be scheduled to make sure they re a good fit Dur ing his cat assessment, he showed interest in the cat but could be redirected He would likely do best with a "dog-savvy" cat and a slow introduction is recommended Chip will need a home with consistency and humans who will be patient with him as he comes out of his shell
