It is that time of the year when we honor our mothers Mothers of faith have many admirable qualities Among other things they are loving, giving, nur tur ing, encouraging and suppor tive Faith in Chr ist is the best gift we can give to our children It is the most lasting legacy I have always been thankful for my Chr istian upbr inging This reminds me of the stor y of the fellow who was deter mined to sleep in one Sunday mor ning rather than to attend church His mother, who happened to be visiting in their home, called him to get up “Time to get up!” He gave her three reasons for staying in bed (1) He had had a rough night (2) He needed his rest (3) He did not want to go to church His mother replied, I’ll give you three reasons for getting up: (1) It is always a good thing to go to church (2) You will enjoy the fellowship of other believers (3) YOU RE THE MINISTER!!!

In a strange way this br ings to mind a mother who c a m e t o J e s u s o n b e h a l f o f h e r s i ck c h i l d (Matthew 15:21-28) She had three things which appeared to be going against her (1) She was a despised Canaanite (2) She was an outsider (3) She was annoying the disciples Jesus was not willing to tur n her away At first Jesus sounded harsh in saying He was only sent “to the lost sheep of Israel” (verse 24) She refused to give up He then said, “It is not r ight to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs” (verse 26) She responded “Yes, but even the dogs eat the cr umbs that fall from the masters’ table” (verse 27) Jesus praised her persistence and healed her demon-possessed daughter on the spot

The sur pr ise ending is that Jesus honored an unlikely mother as “Mother of the Moment ” One cannot help but think Jesus will honor any mother who comes to Him on behalf of her children A faithful mother will do just that and more than once!

With that I would like to ask God to bless ever y woman who has had a positive influence on a child

Jesus answered, Matthew 22:37 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your hear t and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Jesus is saying we are to love like He loves To do that we need a Helper We need to be rebor n by the Spir it of God We need to be first reconnected with God 1 John 4:7 “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God ” I am not saying that human beings are incapable of loving another person What I am saying is when God’s Spir it of love is in us, our love for another is more profound and deep The quality of Chr istian love is not focused on eros love or a self-seeking need to be love

It is agape love, meaning a holy love from God We are now shaped by Chr ist’s sacr ificial love When we obey Jesus’ commands, God’s love cures our love star ved souls

PRAYER TIME: Lord Jesus, thank you for what you have done to my soul You have brought me out from failed self-ser ving relationships into lear ning to love like you Praise your holy name

Our beloved sister, Thea, was born on December 13, 1967, in National City, California to Janet L Hageman (Jackson) and passed on April 21, 2023 Thea loved the sunny California weather with its beautiful sunsets, walking with Brian and their dogs

Most importantly it gave her the year-round opportunity to serve Jehovah God and her life-long ministry work Through her ministry, she was able to help others by sharing a rare love for all without judgment, but rather provide words of encouragement, a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, and offer a helping hand to anyone in need Thea was one of the most kind and caring souls to bless this earth - a true servant of God Our sister’s love for animals was just as strong as was her love for people She enjoyed adopting rescue dogs and giving them a safe harbor to grow, feel free and loved Everyone who knew Thea loved her infectious laugh, funny sayings like “shut the front door”, “what the beavis”, and “you’re a pumpkin head” were all expressions of love and terms of endearment To all her dear friends, know she thought of you often and truly loved you and your families She also loved country music taking cruises watching movies that made her laugh, cry and be scared, hanging out with friends and family, sharing a good meal, and reminiscing She is survived by her brothers, Ray (Sheila) Forney, Rodger (Christina) Salinas, and sister Tracy (Nate) Maurer and ex-husband, Brian Johnson She had special love for all her nieces and nephews: Dustin, Brooklynn, Randi, Seth, Garrett, Evan, Brady, Tori, Logan, and Grayson Great nieces and nephews: Haven, Jax, Braylin, Mason, Brylee, Elliot, Naomi, Remi, and Tripp Thea was preceded in death by her mother, Janet L Hageman (Jackson) Our beautiful sister left this earth way too soon as she still had so much love to give and life to live

Gary A Melvin, age 83 of Kalamazoo, Michigan peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at his home with family by his side He was the muchloved husband of Joan (Bode) Melvin They met at the Wesley Foundation at Ferris in 1959 were married in 1963, and would have been married 60 years in August Gary was a 1958 graduate of Schoolcraft High School, and a graduate of Ferris State University where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi He was an agent with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network for 41 years and obtained the Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant designations from the American College along with becoming a life member of the elite Million Dollar Round Table Gary was active in community affairs and served on many boards, such as: Martin School Board, Allegan County Commissioner, Pipp Hospital, Allegan General Hospital, Outlook Academy, Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity He was a member of the Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award As a member of the Martin United Methodist Church for 40 years, he chaired many meetings, activities, and chaired the building addition in 1989 Gary trained as a Stephen Leader with the Stephen Ministry and was involved helping others for years Gary had a very strong faith and the Lord’s guidance was a big part of his life After moving to Kalamazoo in 2015, he joined the Westwood United Methodist Church and became an active member there serving on the trustee committee Gary loved reading newspapers and books, hunting, fishing, traveling, and camping with his family As part of the NOMADS (Nomads On a Mission of Active Divine Service) team, he traveled around the United States with Joan in their RV helping others for 16 years after retirement Joan and Gary also spent many winters in their Lake Placid, Florida condo where they volunteered at Florida Hospital As a member of the Audubon Society, they went on many birding trips Joan and Gary also enjoyed traveling to various parts of the world learning about different cultures Loved ones that have gone before include his parents, Christine and Howard Melvin and his son, Greg Melvin He is remembered with great affection by his wife, Joan, his children Diane Melvin of Plainwell; Greg’s wife Lisa Melvin of Dexter; and his grandchildren, Courtney, Katrina, and Sam Melvin of Dexter, Christine (Zane) Snarski, of Holland, Joshua (Noel) Melvin, and a great grandson, Valen of Plainwell a sister Kay (John) Wynne of Lexington SC a nephew, Patrick (Valeriane) Casciolo, and family of Darien CT and a niece Michelle Casciolo of Berlin Germany along with many cousins Thank you to Doctor LeFevre for his kind, compassionate, professional care over many years and to Centrica Hospice that provided comfort during the end stage of his life Visitation will be held at the Martin United Methodist Church located on 969 East Allegan Street in Martin on Friday, May 19, 2023 from 4-7 p m On Saturday, May 20, 2023 a visitation will be held at 11:00 a m at the Westwood United Methodist Church located on 538 Nichols Road in Kalamazoo and A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 p m and will be livestreamed on Facebook or at the church website, www westwood-umc org As in life with his life insurance business and volunteer work, he tried to help people Continuing that theme, Gary has donated his body for research to the Western Michigan University School of Medicine Memorials may be made to any of the following ministries: Martin United Methodist Church, Christian Neighbors of Plainwell, Westwood United Methodist Church or Ministry with Community The family is being cared for by Avink, McCowen, Secord Funeral Home 120 S Woodhams, Plainwe l, MI, 269-685-5881
