Otsego gets a taste of authentic Mexican fare with the opening of the Casa Real Mexican Restaurant
Otsego city officials celebrated the opening of the Casa Real Restaurant with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Officials are pictured here with restaurant staff and owner Luciana Ortiz, cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
Thursday, April 19th, 2012 Otsego city officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Casa Real restaurant that opened on February 5th. The restaurant is owned by a brother and sister team, Juan Carlos and Luciana Ortiz, who both moved here from Kalamazoo to start their own restaurant. The two are originally from Degollado, Jalisco in Mexico. They moved to Kalamazoo from Texas in March of 2011. Both now reside in Otsego. Most of the staff are family members or close family friends who have also moved to the Otsego area. Juan Carlos has worked in all areas of the food industry. For the last 4 years he worked in Somerset, Kentucky and most recently at Los Amigos in Portage & Kalamazoo. Juan and Luciana wanted to open their own restaurant showcasing their own authentic Mexican fare. They began looking at locations in smaller towns. Otsego was their choice of location for the restaurant they’ve
named “Casa Real.” The restaurant is located at 232 W. Allegan Street in Otsego. When you enter the restaurant, you won’t find any evidence that the building once housed a laundromat. The beautifully remodeled building has a real Mexican atmosphere with its well planned design and bright artwork. But the real treat is the authentic Mexican food. Authentic dishes such as Carnitas, Enchiladas Rancheras, Coctel de Camaron (a shrimp cocktail dish) and much more. Everything Casa Real serves is made fresh every day. The restaurant will soon serve drinks along with Mexican beers and margaritas when they are granted their license to do so. Stop in and try one of their delicious dishes and welcome this new business to the area. The restaurant is open Sunday thru Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. If you have any questions or would like to order food to take home, you can call the restaurant at (269) 692-6339.

Recently, I was accepted into a program called People to People. I need to raise funds for my tuition on this trip. One of the ways is recycling old, used or even broken cell phones. I am working with a company called PhoneRaiser in Texas. I send them the cell phones; they refurbish them and send them to third-world countries or people in the army. I found out through this program that 1 phone can contaminate up to 39,000 gallons of water if disposed of in a normal landfill, and that currently only 4% of the cell phones get recycled.

Some years ago, I was in a group planning a community Baccalaureate service for high school graduates. One of the pastors said, “Of course the people of my denomination will be the only ones going to heaven.” We pounced on his remark by saying “You may be surprised!” We all do it. Sometimes consciously and other times unconsciously or unintentionally we judge others. Why do we do this? For one, we judge others to make ourselves look better. For another, we may judge others because we are jealous of them or we just plain do not like them. Most often we judge others because we do not know all the facts. We have heard the old sayings, “Do not judge me until you have walked a mile in my moccasins” and “There, but by the grace of God, go I.” To make things worse, Jesus adds “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged …” (Matthew 7:2). In judging others we bring judgment upon ourselves. “Why do you look for the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”(Matthew 7:3). How do we overcome this problem? Here is how we pray the Lord’s Prayer in our church, “Forgive our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us.” The following poem comes from an unknown source: “I dreamed Death came the other night and Heaven’s gate swung wide – With kindly grace an Angel came and ushered me inside – And there to my astonishment stood folks I’d known on Earth – Some I’d judged and labeled “unfit” and “of little worth” – Words of indignation came to my lips but never were set free – For every face showed stunned surprise – No one expected me …” Prayer: Dear Lord, “Forgive my sins as I forgive those who have sinned against me.” In Jesus’ name. Mike Mollitor June 14, 1954 - April 30, 2007
You may remember Mike as a brother, as a friend, or the guy who came running when you needed a hand. You may remember his music, his sense of humor, or his faithfulness as a friend. Mike gave a part of himself to everyone he knew. His faith in God and the way he bravely faced his illness continues to be an inspiration to many. David P. SANDERS AGE 65 - GRAND RAPIDS
David passed away Friday, April 20, 2012, at his home. David was born January 14, 1947 in Battle Creek to Lester and Irene (Reynolds) Sanders. During the Vietnam War he served his country in the U.S. Army. For over 20 years he was employed with Standard Lumber Company in Grand Rapids. In his leisure time he loved playing Bingo, going to the Casinos and fishing. On June 23, 1989 he married Gayle Veld, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Kathy (Larry) Allen of Posen, David Sanders of Hillman, Mike Sanders of Alpena and Kimberly (Adrian) Crawford of Chillicothe, OH; step-children, Caryn Jo Sylvester and Billy Holloway, both of Grand Rapids; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; siblings, Eve LeBlanc, Robert (Esther) Sanders, Perry (Wilma) Sanders, Bonnie Sanders, Julie (Tim) Dunklee and Everett (Cindy) Sanders; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Francis and Doris. Funeral services were held on Tuesday April 24th with Pastor Ron Lugten officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego with Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030. Contributions in memory of David may be made to Twin Lakes Reformed Church or Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Nicholas W. LEWIS AGE 21 - PLAINWELL
Nicholas passed away suddenly April 22, 2012, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Nicholas was born March 15, 1991, in Plainwell, the son of George and Deb (Holloway) Lewis. Nick was a 2008 graduate of Delton Alternative Education High School, where he earned his diploma and GED and graduated one year early. Nick enjoyed hunting and working and co-owned Docks on Sunday with his brother, Tom. Nick was a jokester and very energetic, always helpful with family and friends. He enjoyed dogs and building things. Nick is survived by his parents, his fiancé: Mollie Stampfler, brothers: Anthony and Tom Lewis, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, a cousin: CW Payne, and a uncle: Steve Lewis. Services were held on April 26, 2012 at Faith United Methodist Church, 503 S. Grove St., Delton with Pastor Gary Bekofske officiating. Those who wish to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the needs of the family.
