I need to raise funds for my tuition on this trip. One of the ways is recycling old, used or even broken cell phones. I am working with a company called PhoneRaiser in Texas. I send them the cell phones; they refurbish them and send them to third-world countries or people in the army. I found out through this program that 1 phone can contaminate up to 39,000 gallons of water if disposed of in a normal landfill, and that currently only 4% of the cell phones get recycled.

When life knocks the wind out of our sails, what then? When we feel low in spirit, to whom do we turn? During such times, one can live in denial, wallow in self-pity, and find someone to blame or take positive action. Consider the example of one who chose to take positive action. David, the psalmist, was a lot like us. In the above psalm, he knew spiritual hunger and thirst (verses l & 2); the testing of his faith (verse 3); lament (verse 4) and deep depression of the spirit (verse 5). As with many of the psalms, this one begins with despair and ends with hope. Why is this? What happened between the first and the last verses? The answer is David turned to God. God is hope. To be connected with God is to be connected to hope. When Norris Dam was first built in the hills of East Tennessee, a worker on the night shift noticed something that seemed strange to him. He could hear the great dynamos humming powerfully in the quiet of night, but when he looked across the lake, every cabin in sight was lighted not by electrical energy, but by kerosene lamps! When he asked about it, he was told the transmission lines had not yet been laid. Think of that. The power was there, but they were not plugged into it. So often, God’s power is available to us but we are so caught up in our situation that we fail to connect to Him. Some years ago, a small town called Hope, Alaska was destroyed by a flood. No lives were lost but there was tremendous property damage. A leader of a church went there to see how he might help. When he arrived he found the devastated town completely deserted. However, someone had placed a small sign in the center of what had once been the main street of the little town. The sign read: “The Community of Hope Has Moved to Higher Ground.” In telling this story, I was surprised that a member of my congregation had actually visited the town of Hope. Hope is really not that hard to find. Have you visited Hope lately? Prayer: With the psalmist, I pray, let me find my hope in God. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.
