Otsego Welcomes New Business, Moonrose Cottage On Wednesday, November 9th, 2011, Otsego city officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Moonrose Cottage located at 118 N. Farmer Street, downtown Otsego. Moonrose Cottage offers a variety of unique items made by local artisans. There is a blend of different arts including hand thrown pottery, handmade soaps, copper wire tree sculptures, handmade jewelry, homemade pillows and linens, ear candles, essential oils. Marcia, who is part-owner, designs silk flower arrangements and wreaths that are available for purchase. The store also carries many things “previously loved.” Marcia does have a partner in Moonrose Cottage. Christine is a Certified Massage Therapist. She is licensed in Illinois and has 720 clinical hours. She is nationally certified as well and also does Hot Stone and

Swedish Massage. Christine still travels back to Illinois once a month to tend to her patients. Among her clients are the Amish and their hard working horses. Yes....horses! She also works with show and race horses and has many clients. Although at Moonrose Cottage she is not set up to tend to horses, she is set up to tend to the surrounding community of people. The J.C. Library in Martin was recently awarded a matching grant for children’s books from The Libri Foundation. The Friends of the Library contributed $350, which the foundation matched on a 2-to-1 ratio. We were also selected to receive an additional $350 worth of match and science books. In all we received 81 new children’s books for a total of $1,409.87. These will be displayed for the month of December and we will be reading some of them during our story times. A big Thank You goes out to our Friends group and The Libri Foundation!

PAY-IT-FORWARD “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – MARK 10:45 There is a phrase that we hear often today. “Paying it forward” means to give something back. It is clear from the Scriptures that Jesus was born to serve and to save. He preached it, practiced it, commanded it and modeled it. By His death on the cross, Jesus gave something back … He redeemed us … restored us … and challenged us to give our lives in service to others. He “Paid it forward.” We have a wonderful opportunity to do just that in our community from now through December 9. The students at Dix Street Elementary in Otsego are currently participating in a “Pay – It – Forward” school challenge offered through Fox l7 News. Fox News recently did a story featuring the recent 3rd grade class clothing drive/clothes closet which is helping to serve needy students in the Otsego community. The school could win up to $5,000 which would be used for special playground equipment for students with disabilities and to help keep the clothes closet open. Mary died November 24, 2011 at her home. She was born October 10, 1933 in Elkhart, IN, the daughter of Peter and Rose (Fortino) Minelli. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, November 29 at St. Augustine Cathedral. Burial at East Cooper Cemetery. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Loftus in 1985, daughter, Linda Loftus, and brother, Peter Minelli. Surviving are 7 children, Mark (Robin) Loftus, Michael Loftus, Laura (Phil) Gigante, Christopher (Barb) Loftus, Peter (Kim) Loftus, Robert (Beth) Loftus and James Loftus; 18 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; sister, Helen (James) Weybrecht and many nieces and nephews. Alice died Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Allegan General Hospital. Mrs. Creech was born March 28, 1943 in Allegan, the daughter of Ford and Luvena (Coffey) Moored. Alice graduated from Allegan High School in 1961 and attended Central Michigan University. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Allegan. Alice worked for Parker-Hannifin Brass Division in Otsego for 30 years, and also worked for Allegan County Medical Care Facility, Pine Oaks Nursing Home, Kal-Equip, and was an active member of both Curves and Zumba Classes in Allegan. She loved to spend time in her garden, tending to her flowers and vegetables, but her heart was always with her kids, and especially her grandchildren. Surviving are her 4 children, Bill and Teresa Creech of Allegan, Laura Weaver of Gobles, Mike and Carol Creech of Ann Arbor, and Matt and Andrea Creech of Plainwell; 8 grandchildren, Ashley, Ben, Nathan, Charlie, Alyssa, Bailey, Evie, and Norah; 2 brothers, John and Shirley Moored of Zeeland, and Bernard and Liz Moored of Allegan; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 2007, and her son-in-law, Jeff. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 2 at the United Methodist Church in Allegan. Pastors Robert Stover and Joseph Spackman officiating. Interment followed at Hudson Corners Cemetery, Allegan Twp. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church for the Kids Hope Program. Glenna L. BURKETT AGE 91 - OTSEGO
Glenna Lucille Worden Burkett was released from this earthly life to her heavenly home on November 26, 2011. Mrs. Burkett was born October 30, 1920, in Payne, OH to Rev. Lester and Esther Worden. Glenna was a licensed foster mother and caregiver to numerous children. She served in a variety of areas at the Otsego Church of God; as the first Librarian, starting the Mothers’ Club, a Bible School Director, as a Sunday School Teacher and vocalist. Two records were made from her special songs in 1948. She also enjoyed embroidering, artex painting, plants and most importantly her family. On August 25, 1939 in Lincoln, IL she married Milton J. Burkett who preceded her in death in 1998. Surviving are her daughters, Rita (Jim) Arnsman of Otsego and Jean (Ron) Phelps of Plainwell; daughter-in-law, Dee Burkett; 10 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; brothers, Frank (Mary) Worden, Harlan (Norma) Worden, Sr. and H. David (Wanda) Worden, Sr.; a sister-in-law, Bea Worden. Preceding her in death was her son Wendell in 2010; granddaughter, Laureen; 2 brothers, Ralph and Russell Worden; 2 sisters, Phyllis Ballew and Donna Thomas. The family wishes to thank the staff at Life Care Center for the last 1-1/2 years of special care to Glenna. Funeral Services were held Thursday, December 1st at the Church of God, Otsego, Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Contributions in memory of Glenna may be made to the Women of the Otsego Church of God Children’s Christmas Ministry. Tyler passed away on November 22, 2011. A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday Nov. 29th at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church. Tyler graduated from Plainwell High School in June of this year. He loved to snowboard and skateboard. His personality lit up the room. Tyler leaves behind his parents, Scott and Linda Warner; his sister Lauren “Babie” Warner; his uncle Jimmy (Joelyn) Krutsch; his Aunt Sallie (Roger) Mejia; cousins Brandon, Colleen, Kevin, Josh, and Brianna; his grandparents: Jacqueline “Ninni” Krutsch, Sharon and Larry “Papa” Dorey and Ronald “Papa” Warner. He also leaves behind his girlfriend Kayla. Tyler was preceded in death by his grandfather Harold “Papa” Krutsch. Residents will be given carts to replace the current bins that are used to pick up Recycling. The City contracts with Bestway Disposal to collect recyclable materials the first Tuesday of each month from each home that has a recycle bin placed on the curb. During the December collection (Tuesday, December 6th), the current bins will be exchanged with carts. Please leave your bins on the curb, as it will take a few days for all bins to be exchanged. If you do not have bins and wish to participate please contact City Hall. There is no longer a need to separate recycling materials. All materials must be placed in the single cart container for pickup, materials that are not in the container, will not be picked up. The new use of the cart will allow for more materials to be placed in the single container and will allow for safer, more efficient collection of materials.
