The wheels of prog ress can move very slowly for city governments and Otsego is no exception. Oftentimes real change in our community requires coordination between the City of Otsego, Allegan County, the State of Michigan and federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency. This coordination can seem to move so slow ly that residents do not realize it is happening Otsego is currently on the cusp of two long term priorities coming to fruition.
1. The former Rock Tenn paper mill has long been an area of blight. Over the past few years, the dangerous materials have been removed and the old buildings demolished The site is currently being readied for residential development and a developer is attached. The City of Otsego has approved a housing study to be completed by the end of this year This study will help ensure that any new housing is tailored to our needs, now and in the future.
2. The City of Otsego is the sole remaining stakeholder in the Otsego City Dam. This dam, built over a hundred years ago, created a maintenance liability for the city that will exist until it is removed. In May of 2019, the City of Otsego pur chased a parcel at the end of Mitchell Street in the hopes of encourag ing the EPA to make the removal of the Otsego City Dam their next project by provid ing an area to access the Kalamazoo River for the next stage of remediation This process is now in the beg inning stages. It is expected that when the removal is finished in the next few years, the Mitchell lot will have been improved into a boat launch accessible to the public.
I am proud to have suppor ted both projects As a City Commissioner, I believe it is my duty to look to the future and make decisions that will positively impact the g reatest number of our citizens while also ensuring the long-term health of the City

I am a 5th generation native to Otsego, so some may know me best as daughter of Nancy & Jerry Seibert I am a 1988 graduate of OHS and studied music literature and performance at Central Michigan University
For the last 8 years, I have been employed with Lyster Exteriors, a large exteriors company in Kalamazoo, where I am a customer service and marketing representative I have been married almost 27 years to my husband Joel, an Otsego 1979 graduate, with whom I have 2 amazing children Our son Hunter, was a 2014 OHS graduate, as well as one of OFD’s first cadet program members He then went on to be an OFD firefighter Currently he is working for Comstock Township, and is a Firefighter/ Lieutenant for Gobles Pine Grove Fire Dept Hunter and his wife Alayna have one daughter, and another on the way Our daughter, Grace, who was 2021 OHS graduate and previous OFD Cadet and Firefighter, now works for LIFE EMS as an EMT She is also a Firefighter with the Bloomingdale Fire Dept
I have been active in my community for many years as Otsego Fire Department Auxiliary President, Alamo Little League board of directors, Otsego Rocket Football Cheerleading coach, Otsego Creative Arts Festival and Gus Macker volunteer just to name a few During my 1st term on the commission, I was head of the video/ marketing committee for our promotional Otsego video and am also assigned to the fire dept committee

Wendy Newton passed away peacefully but unexpectedly at her home October 4, 2022 She was born May 14, 1956 at Bronson Hospital in Kala mazoo She was an honor student and member of the 1974 Comstock High School graduating class Wendy was a lifelong learner, attending college and reading books that interested her She was curious about how things worked, tinkering on things and figuring it out She enjoyed summer and didn’t mind getting a little muddy as she worked in her garden and beautified the landscaping Wendy was generous with her hugs, she made you feel like you had known each other forever, her hugs were full of love She was a ray of sunshine in every room she entered She loved animals, especially her two cats She found tranquility in coloring with her favorite colored pencils and inspi ration while reading her bible Wendy loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren She will be missed by her loving family and friends She is survived by her children, Billie Jo Cook, Chad M Jacob and Destiny Newton Ellsworth, grandchildren, Chad Jr, Madison, Chasity, Keegan, Cole, Autumn, Dawson, Grayson and Hudson, and her siblings Brenda Price Eggleston, Gary Lee Cunningham, John Romain, Pamela Warner Swiler and William J Relaford She was preceded in death by her parents, Gwen L Curtis and William D Relaford, brother Ronald D Blair and her sis ter Cindy Lou Relaford Friends may visit with Wendy’s family starting at 10:00 am on Sunday, October 23 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of her memorial service at 11:00 am

One of the things we have had to deal with since the beginning of time is the presence of evil in our wor ld Evil takes on many for ms, such as violent a c t s a g a i n s t i n n o c e n t p e r s o n s, a bu s i ve behaviors, dr ive by shootings, war and cr ime The question is how to face the enemies of life
Some think if only God would take out evil persons, the wor ld would be a safer place in which to live The fact remains if God removed all for ms of sin in the wor ld, who would be left to tell about it? The disciples str uggled with it as did Apostle Paul
In response to this question Jesus told the parable (Also known as the Parable of Wheat and Tares) about a far mer who planted good seed in his field While he was sleeping his enemy came and sowed weeds (tares) among the wheat The ser vants of the owner asked where the weeds came from The far mer explained “An enemy did this ” The ser vants then asked if he wanted them to go out and remove the weeds The owner said, “‘No,” ‘because while pulling up the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them Let them both grow together until the har vest ’” (Matthew 13:29, 30)
