Plainwell’s Night Spots Host ~ Pub Crawl On the evening of Saturday, October 15, and after the little ghosts and goblins are tucked into their beds, tired, from the fun filled day at “Pumpkins in The Park,” there will be adult fun. The first ever “Pumpkin Pie Eyed Pub Crawl” will take place in the downtown area of Plainwell. This event will include four establishments: Joe’s Pizza and Sports Bar, Rhino’s Hometown Pub, Tenth Street Saloon and The London Grill. All are within a one block walking distance of each other. Contestants must collect a “coaster” from each of the four locations. When the contestant has collected all four coasters, they must sign the backs and drop them into
the pumpkin box at their last location visited. The winner of the first ever “Pumpkin Pie Eyed Pub Crawl” will receive an all expense paid two day and one night vacation to beautiful, quiet, Hooper Michigan. The winner however, will have to take along their own overnight accommodations as the Old Hotel was long ago turned into a lovely family home. However, the ride to Hooper and Gun Swamp both, this time of year is a lovely one. With the beautiful fall colors and a chance to see the wildlife, it’s a must see this time of year. With some time, patience and work, it's possible to get your yard back in order and ready for the winter. Signs of typical summer wear and tear on lawns were amplified as they were stressed by the above-normal temperatures experienced across the United States," said Ben Hamza, Ph.D., director of technical operations at TruGreen, the nation's largest professional lawn care service. "Fall is the ideal time to nurture lawns and landscapes to help ensure your yard's health for spring." Assess - Thoroughly walk your property and inspect the lawn, trees and shrubs. Note patchy areas, where grass has thinned out or is in need of valuable nutrients and appears as light green. Also look for weed and plant pest infestations and overgrown trees and shrubs, especially those with the potential for interfering with roof and power lines. Consider a qualified expert, such as TruGreen, to properly gauge your lawn and landscape needs. Replace - Fall is the right time to seed bare lawn areas and overseed existing grass to improve lawn thickness and density. After a detailed inspection of your lawn's trouble spots, your TruGreen specialist could recommend one of several reseeding techniques: Spot Seeding - fills in small areas that are thin or infested with weeds. Overseeding - generally used for larger areas where the turf is thin, but not bare.
Slit Seeding - a premium service using a specialized machine to cut slits into the soil and sow turf seeds directly into the slits. Lightly rake an inch of surface soil to remove dead debris and properly prepare the area for seeding. Choose a grass seed that is the same type as the grass already growing in your lawn. Lightly apply seed to the soil surface and gently pack to firm the seed into the soil. Apply a light layer of straw or seeding mulch to encourage rapid seed germination. Water lightly until the seed has fully emerged. Do not apply crabgrass preventive to newly seeded areas of your lawn. Feed - Fall feeding gives roots of lawns, trees and shrubs the energy needed to prepare for a healthy spring green revival. Be sure to keep fertilizer on target to prevent runoff. Using a trained specialist, such as TruGreen, for insect and disease control measures customized to your region will help trees and shrubs thrive. If you fertilize your
own lawn, make sure you read and follow the product directions and sweep all fertilizer granules that may reach pavement back onto your lawn. Maintain - Throughout the fall, there are things you can do to maintain your yard's appearance and health: Rake and clean. Keeping leaves and debris cleared off your lawn will keep your lawn healthier. Continue to clear away debris that can become matted and damage your lawn. Inspect your landscape mulch in the fall. Clean up beds, refresh mulch and make sure that no more than two to three inches of mulch remains in the beds. Do not walk on frost-covered lawns. Doing so may cause brown footprints to appear later. These footprints may remain visible until spring green-up begins.

Words of Faith & Hope OPEN MY EYES THAT I MAY SEE “Lo, I am with you always…” – Jesus Matthew 28:20
During times of suffering and loss it is normal to ask, “Where was God when …?” Even our Lord asked it. On the cross, Jesus prayed “Why have you forsaken me?” Questioning the presence of God is never God’s issue, but our issue. After all, God by nature is omnipresent (everywhere present- Read Psalm l39). There have been many times, in a given situation, when God was present but we did not see Him. We have said with Jacob of old “Surely the Lord is in this place- and I was not aware of it!”(Genesis 28:l6). Someone suggested a modern day version, “God was here and I was out to lunch!” There are many reasons for missing the presence of God. Self-preoccupation … being too caught up in the situation at hand … lack of faith … pessimism … doubt. More often than not it is simply a case of spiritual blindness. There’s the story of a man who was trapped in his house during a flood. When the water came up to his front porch, a boat came by to
take him to safety, but the man refused saying “No, I will stay here. I have faith in God and God will save me.” When the floodwaters got to the second floor of the house, a second boat came to get the man. “No,” the man said, “I will stay here. I have faith in God and God will save me.” Later the water was so high, the man was stranded on the roof. When a helicopter came, the man again said “No, I will stay here. I have faith in God and God will save me.” The man died and went to heaven. Immediately, he demanded an answer from God, “Lord, I had faith in you. Why didn’t you save me?” God replied, “Look, I sent two boats and a helicopter. What more did you expect?” During times of questioning, we might join the prayer of the hymn writer, “Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me; place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free.” (Clara H. Ethan passed away Monday, October 10, 2011 in Plainwell. Ethan was born January 29, 2005 in Kalamazoo to Peter and Jennifer (Schack) Trudelle. He was a happy little boy, who loved people and was always smiling. Once he got to know you he enjoyed touching your face. He loved school, being outside and watching birds, and loved his brothers and sisters, whose hair he enjoyed pulling. Anything bright and lively he especially enjoyed, as well as being tickled and wrestled with, listening to music, sitting up with the kids, going on rides, having air blowing in his face and talking early in the morning. Surviving are his parents, Peter and Jennifer Trudelle; his siblings, Gavin, Peter, Jillian and Carys; grandparents, Lawrence and Muriel Schack and Orvil Trudelle; aunts, Melissa Schack, Karen Beck and Lisa Sanders. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Virginia Carruthers. Services were held Friday morning at the First Baptist Church of Otsego with Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Ethan may be made to the Children’s Ministries at First Baptist Church of Otsego.
Margaret passed away Friday, October 7, 2011 in Alamo. Mrs. Lovett was born June 27, 1919 in Richland, Michigan to Dorsey and Gertrude (Grigsby) Ames. Margaret worked for Eaton Corp. for 30 years before retiring in 1982. She enjoyed her family and times spent with them, plus her extended family for the past four years at FMC Oshtemo Dialysis Clinic. Margaret loved flowers and birds and had a special cat, Jazz “Kitty Kitty”. She is survived by a son and his wife, John C. and Sue Lovett of Otsego; a daughter and her husband, Margaret Ann and Marshall Howrigon of Plainwell; six grandchildren, Debra Lovett, John C. (Wendy) Lovett, Jr., Robin Goodrich, Tonia (Mark) Shoup, Tracey (Jim) Digby and Trent Howrigon; 12 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Carl Lovett; her parents; a sister, Ellen Ames Young; two brothers, Fred Ames and Clarence Ames; and a special friend, George. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial service was held Monday, October 10 with celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Mike passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in Kalamazoo. Mike was born February 8, 1960 in Plainwell to Ronald and Kay (Kissinger) McFanin. He had worked for Advance Poured Walls as a heavy equipment operator from 1994 -2009 and before that he worked for Brigham Excavating. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying RC airplanes and helicopters and had attended the First Baptist Church of Otsego his whole life. On October 7, 1989 in Otsego he married Gail Brown, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jenna and Kyle McFanin; his parents, Ron and Kay McFanin; his grandmother, Maxine McFanin, all of Otsego; his siblings, Ronda Penny, of Otsego, Kim Gillies of Otsego, Brad (Desi) McFanin of Plainwell, Colleen (Ward) Litchfield of Granger, IN, Ron (Barb) McFanin of Otsego, Brian (Kelly) McFanin of Kalamazoo, Christina (Todd) Back of Plainwell and Amanda (Ryan) Arthur of Huron, OH; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ward & Dorothy Kissinger and Ron McFanin and his uncle Roger McFanin.

Jim passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 7, 2011 at his home. Mr. McCormick was born February 3, 1940 in Kalamazoo to Kenneth and Ethyl (Amsbury) McCormick. He was a member of the Plainwell High School Class of 1958 and from 1961 to 1965 he served his country in the U.S. Navy. For 38 years he was employed as a tool and die maker with Parker Hannifin Brass. Jim was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge #345, the Allegan Eagles Lodge and the American Legion of Allegan. In his leisure time he enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading. Surviving is his wife of 26 years, Linda (Jackson). Also surviving are a son, Jim of Kalamazoo; two grandsons, Kiefer and Shane of Kalamazoo; his siblings, Ruth Wicklund of Bradley, Mick (Cathy) McCormick of Allegan, Betsy (Joe) Tutchton of Colorado, Mary Haywood and Linda McCormick, both of Texas; stepchildren, Scott (Sherry) Hickman of Dowling, Michael Hickman of Kalamazoo and Tamera (Kirk) Wise of Florida; nine step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Barbara Stephens in 2002. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service was held at the Otsego Moose Lodge on Monday, October 10th.
Lloyd Polmanteer of Allegan, died Thursday October 6, 2011. He was born March 21, 1938, the son of the late Roy and Minnie Polmanteer. He was married to Shirley Margaret Vote; she preceded him in death in May of 2009. He worked for Rockwell International for 25 years and then for Plainwell Elevator, where he retired. Lloyd was a 4H leader for 40 years. He was a sheep superintendent at the Allegan County Fair for many years. Surviving are his two daughters, Jackie (Paul) Strobridge of Allegan and Kelli Donovan of Otsego; six grandchildren, Jeremie, Valerie, William, Amanda, Lauren and Cecil; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Hannah and Kayla; his brothers and sisters, Irene Vander Meer, Donna Craft and Arnold (Belle) Polmanteer and Katherine Sievers; several nieces and nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Hirsch; and his brothers and sisters, Thelma Besemer, Lillian Spence, Dorothy Schiebout, Margorie Bosse, Roy Polmanteer, Richard Polmanteer and Ivan Polmanteer. Friends met with the family on Tuesday, October 11 at the Gordon Funeral Residence - Allegan In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to 4H.

Billie Jean passed away Friday, October 7, 2011, in Plainwell. Billie Jean was born May 10, 1935 in Manila, Arkansas to Rollo and Doris (Pierce) Fleeman. She had worked as a bus driver for Otsego Public Schools and in Food Services at WMU. Billie Jean enjoyed traveling, fishing, collecting dolls, country music and Happy Meals. On January 13, 1979 she married Denny Schultz who survives. Also surviving are a son, Keith G. (Debra) Cornell of Kalamazoo; 2 granddaughters, Heather Danielson of Galesburg and Sunshine McCurdy of Grand Blanc; 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 daughter, Sabrina Cornell, 3 sisters, Edith Spears, Ruth Kruithoff and Pat Nelson, a brother, Glen Fleeman. Services were held Tuesday, October 11 at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. Pat passed away Friday, October 7, 2011, in Kalamazoo. She spent her last day with her family and she was full of smiles. Pat was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Pat was born November 2, 1940 in Otsego to Irvin and Ethel (Fletcher) Fuller, she was a lifelong resident of the area. In 1973 she began working for the Kellogg Biological Station, retiring in 1995 after over 20 years of service. In her leisure time she enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles, and her cats and dog. Pat loved her family and was always ready to feed them. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, James Phillips; son, Randy (Missie) Phillips; daughter, Patti (Bab) Phillips; five grandchildren, James, Joseph, Hope, Michelle and Ryan; four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Chase, Lexi and Olivia; sisters, Rosey Oetman, Jenny (Ron) Pillars and Carol (Dale) Wiley. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bud and Ray Fuller; two sisters, Donna Stewart and Bea Syers.
