Ben Johnson (above), the greatest short distance sprinter in Columbia history, ran 6.1 seconds for the semifinals of the 60-yard dash at Madison Square Garden in 1938. In the final, he was clocked at 6.0, but the officials denied Johnson the new time, because, according to an article written by Lew King, the records committee would not believe that anyone could run that fast. He was credited with a time of 6.1. Johnson’s school record in the 60 meter dash (6.80), set in 1939, has stood for almost seven decades.

Caitlin Hickin ‘04CC is one of the most decorated runners in Columbia history. She was the first female cross country runner in Columbia’s history to recieve All-American honors, in 2001 and 2003. A six-time All-Ivy League selection, Hickin led the women’s cross country team to Ivy League Championships in 2002 and 2003.
