TODAY’S GAME EMPIRE STATE BOWL

When Columbia and Cornell meet annually on the football field, the rivalry is dubbed the Empire State Bowl. The rivalry took on the name “Empire State Bowl” in 2010, emblematic for Ivy League football supremacy in New York State. Each year’s winner earns the right to take home the Empire Cup.

COLUMBIA-CORNELL SERIES

Columbia and Cornell meet for the 106th time in series history with Cornell holding a 65-37-3 advantage. Columbia claimed last year’s meeting, 18-8 in Ithaca. In games played at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium, Cornell holds a slight 9-8 edge. The series ranks as the 15th most played series in the history of college football.

LIONS IN SEARCH OF BACK-TO-BACK WINNING SEASONS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1961-62

With a victory over Cornell on Saturday, Columbia would secure its first back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1961-62. In 1961, Columbia captured the 1961 Ivy League Championship with a 6-3 overall record and followed that up with a 5-4 record in 1962. Aldo T. “Buff” Donelli coached both teams. This year, Columbia enters its final contest with a 5-4 overall record. Columbia finished 8-2 in 2017.

MOST WINS OVER TWO-YEAR PERIOD

With its 13 victories over the last two seasons (combining 2017 and 2018), Columbia has already set its school-record for most total victories combining two consecutive seasons since it joined the Ivy League in 1956. The Lions also won 12 games in 1996-97. In the 128-year history of Columbia Football, the record is 17

• Led the Lions to an 8-2 overall, 5-2 Ivy League record in 2017 and second place finish in the league, Columbia’s best overall record, best Ivy League season and highest Ivy League finish in 21 years. The eight wins rank tied for the third most wins in school history. • Led the Lions to a seven-game win streak from Nov. 19, 2016 to Oct. 28, 2017, the school’s longest win streak since 1935 and third longest win streak in school history. • In 2017, helped lead the Lions to a 6-0 start to a season for the first time since 1996. The 6-0 start marked just the second time since 1945 that Columbia began a year with six straight victories. • Concluded career with back-to-back 3-0 non-conference seasons. • Defeated six of seven Ivy League opponents and won at five Ancient Eight road venues (Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, Yale). • 12 of the 19 seniors have earned starting roles in at least one game during their career. • Enrolled at Columbia the same year Al Bagnoli began his coaching career with the Lions.

NEXT MAN UP RYAN YOUNG wins over a two-year period in both 1901-02 and 1903-04. Other top winningest two-year periods include 16 wins in 1899-1900; 15 wins in 1900-01, 1933-34, 1932-33 and 1902-03; 14 wins in 1901-02, 1931-32, 1945-46; 13 wins in 2017-18, 1946-47, 1931-32; and 12 wins in 1996-97, 1930-31 and 1925-26.

BACK-TO-BACK .500 SEASONS GUARANTEED

With a 42-20 win at Brown last Saturday, Columbia registered its fifth victory of the year and is now guaranteed finishing at least .500 in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1961-63 when the Lions put together three straight years with an even record.

With 20+ injuries suffered this season, Columbia has still found a way to win. It is a “Next Man Up” mentality, playing without its top three quarterbacks, its top two wide receivers, its top two running backs and without nine other players who had started games this year. Bagnoli has depth built on three straight top-25 recruiting classes. Amazingly, Columbia has won five games on the year using four different starting quarterbacks. Columbia has won at least one game in which each of the four started.

ABOUT THE LIONS

Winners of 14 of its last 20 games, Columbia enters its final game of the year after a convincing come-from-behind 42-20 win at Brown last Saturday. Senior wide receiver/wildcat quarterback Kyle Castner rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more scores and first-year quarterback Ty Lenhart passed for career-highs of 298 yards and 28 completions as Columbia registered the win.

SIX WINS AMONG THE WINNINGEST ALL-TIME AT COLUMBIA A win over Cornell on Saturday would give Columbia its sixth victory on the year. Even with all the injuries causing uncertainty at a variety of positions, six wins would rank among the all-time winningest seasons in Columbia Football history. Since Columbia joined the Ivy League in 1956, the Lions have won six or more games just four times: 1961, 1971, 1996 and 2017. A win on Saturday would give Columbia its fifth six-win season since 1956. Here is where six wins would stack up against other top seasons in school history: • 9 wins season- 1903, 1899 • 8 wins- 1901, 1933, 1945, 1996, 2017 • 7 wins- 1900, 1904, 1931, 1932, 1934, 1947 • 6 wins- 1925, 1926, 1946, 1961, 1971 and possibly 2018!

SENIOR CLASS ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Columbia Football’s 19-member Class of 2018 has achieved numerous records during its time with the program. Here are a few: • 18 total victories and counting and 10 Ivy League wins from 2015-18. • The 18 victories currently rank tied for No. 5 among winningest senior classes since Columbia joined the Ivy League in 1956. With a win Saturday, the class will move into a tie for second place on that list. • Helped Columbia post the most wins in back-to-back seasons since 1956.

The Lions scored a season-high 42 points and amassed a season-high 515 total offensive yards as they bested the Bears in total yardage (515-254), first downs (24-6), rushing yards (190-88) and passing yards (325-166). The Lions scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to take the lead and secure the win. Columbia’s defense was dominant in the second half as Brown was held to zero points, 26 total yards of offense on 30 plays, eight yards rushing, 18 yards passing and only three first downs. The Lions also registered a team-record 10 sacks and intercepted two passes in the contest. In 2017, Columbia completed one of its most successful seasons in school history under Head Coach Al Bagnoli. In 2018, the Lions returned 14 of 22 starters (seven on offense and seven on defense) and six All-Ivy League selections from a program that recorded its best season in 21 years. Last year, Columbia posted an 8-2 record, finished second in the Ivy League with a 5-2 record, began a season with six straight wins for the first time since 1996, put together the school’s longest win streak since 1935 (seven games) and posted one of the nation’s top-five best yearly comebacks in the FCS with a five-win improvement from 2016 to 2017. Along the way, it was the Lions’ resiliency, toughness and work ethic that captured the attention of their fans, the New York City media and national media members alike.

KYLE CASTNER NAMED IVY LEAGUE CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK AFTER BROWN PERFORMANCE

Senior wide receiver and wildcat quarterback Kyle Castner was named the Ivy League co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. Castner, who shares the honor with Princeton’s Colinn Eady, becomes Columbia’s first Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week honoree this year and the first since Josh Wainwright earned the honor on Oct. 16, 2017, following Columbia’s Homecoming win over Penn. In Saturday’s 42-20 win at Brown, Castner tied a school record for most touchdowns responsible for with five as he rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two scores. His three rushing touchdowns tie for the fifth most in school history. On the day, Castner rushed for a career-high 88 yards and three touchdowns on a career-high 15 carries, caught four passes for 48 yards and threw two touchdown passes while completing 2-3 passes for 27 yards. Castner’s five touchdowns included a two-yard pass to Rory Schlageter in the second quarter, a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, a 25-yard TD pass to Ryan Young on a razzle dazzle play in the third quarter and a 31-yard touchdown run in

RORY SCHLAGETER & KYLE CASTNER the fourth quarter. He accounted for five of Columbia’s six touchdowns on the day. On the year, Castner leads the Lions in both receptions (38) and receiving yards (370), ranks second on the team in rushing touchdowns (4), has rushed 20 times for 97 yards (4.8 average) and has completed 4-5 passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns. He also leads the Lions in all-purpose yardage with 467 (51.9 per game).

DELORENZI SETS SEASON SACKS RECORD

Upon entering the season’s final game vs. Cornell, junior defensive lineman Daniel DeLorenzi set Columbia’s official season sacks record. DeLorenzi, who leads the Ivy League in both sacks (0.94 per game) and tackles for loss (1.06 per game), has recorded 9.5 sacks on the season which surpasses Columbia’s previous record of 9.0 set by Lou Miller two times in both 2008 and 2009. Columbia sacks records are inflated to reflect changing in the way sacks were recorded through history.

AUTOMATIC ALLEYNE

Senior Chris Alleyne has set two season records for most points scored by a placekicker (currently 63 and climbing) and most field goals made (14). Alleyne has earned two Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week honors (Sept. 24 and Oct. 22). On the year, Alleyne is 14-17 on field goals, a perfect 21-21 on extra point attempts and leads the Lions in scoring with 63 points. He ranks No. 3 nationally in field goals per game (1.56) and No. 19 nationally in field goal percentage (82.4). He has also totaled 25 touchbacks on 46 kickoffs this year. With one game left in 2018, Alleyne is also ranked among Columbia alltime season placekicking leaders: • His current 82.4 percent field goal accuracy currently ranks fifth in season records. • His current PAT accuracy of 100 percent (21-21) ties Columbia’s season record with seven other players. • His 21 consecutive PATs made ranks third on Columbia’s season consecutive extra points list. The record is 26 set by Luke Eddy in 2010. • His 14 field goals on the year have already set Columbia’s record for most field goals by a senior. The previous record was 10 by Tom Boccafola in 1991. • His field goals of 51, 46 and 46 yards all rank among the top-15 longest field goals in school history. His career-long 51-yard field goal against Yale ranks as the No. 2 longest field goal in school history and ties for the longest field goal in Lawrence A. Wien Stadium history.

AL BAGNOLI PATRICIA AND SHEPARD ALEXANDER HEAD COACH OF FOOTBALL 4TH SEASON | CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE ’75

N

ine-time Ivy League Football Champion and one of the all-time winningest head coaches in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision history, Al Bagnoli was named Columbia’s Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football on February 23, 2015. He begins his fourth season at Columbia in 2018. After only three years and three consecutive top-25 nationally ranked recruiting classes, Bagnoli and his coaching staff have Columbia Football trending upward. Last year, Bagnoli guided Columbia to its best season since 1996 as the Lions accumulated an 8-2 record and finished second in the Ivy League with a 5-2 campaign. For the first time in 21 years, Columbia was involved in the Ivy League Championship chase up until the season’s final minutes. In addition, Columbia began a season with six straight wins for the first time since 1996, put together the school’s longest winning streak since 1935 (seven games) and posted one of the nation’s top-five best yearly comebacks in the FCS with a with a five-win improvement from 2016 to 2017. Along the way, it was the Lions’ resiliency, toughness and work ethic that captured the attention of their fans, the New York City media and national media members alike. For his efforts, Bagnoli was named a national Coach of the Year finalist by the AFCA and STATS FCS and earned the Ivy League, ECAC and AFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year honors. Nationally known for his ability to turn football programs into winners, Bagnoli arrived at Columbia after 23 years at the University of Pennsylvania, where he totaled a 14880 overall record and 112-49 record in the Ivy League. His Penn teams won nine Ivy League Championships, including six undefeated conference marks (1993, 1994, 2002,

2003, 2009, 2010) and three perfect seasons (10-0 in 1993 and 2003, 9-0 in 1994). Prior to his time at Penn, Bagnoli served as the head coach of Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he amassed an 87-18 overall record in 10 seasons. Bagnoli made his collegiate head coaching debut at Union College in 1982, guiding the Dutchmen to their first winning season in 12 years with an 8-1 record. The following season, Bagnoli guided the program to an NCAA Division III title-game appearance and a 10-2 record, garnering East Region Coach of the Year honors. The Dutchmen were named the ECAC’s Team of the Year for the 1983 campaign. Union reached the NCAA playoffs six times and posted 10-consecutive winning seasons during Bagnoli’s tenure in Schenectady. In 1989, Bagnoli guided the Dutchmen to the program’s greatest season ever, rolling to a 10-0 regular-season record and three-straight NCAA playoff victories en route to the NCAA Division III National Championship game (Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl). Two years later, Bagnoli received the Eastman Kodak Award as the American Football Coaches Association Region I Coach of the Year. Bagnoli’s 1991 Union team had the nation’s top scoring offense, averaging 46.1 points per game, while his 1984 squad boasted the top defense, allowing a measly 4.6 points per game. Before being named head coach of the Dutchmen, Bagnoli served as Union’s defensive coordinator from 1978-82. Bagnoli is a two-time recipient (1993 and 1994) of the Scotty Whitelaw Award as the NCAA Division I-AA Coach of the Year, voted upon by the Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association. His coaching career began while he was pursuing his master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Albany. He served as a graduate assistant coach for one season before becoming Albany’s defensive coordinator from 1976-77. Bagnoli earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and history from Central Connecticut State in 1975. During his undergrad years, he played three seasons of varsity football. Central Connecticut State’s record during that span was 23-5.

LEE C. BOLLINGER PRESIDENT

L

ee C. Bollinger became Columbia University’s nineteenth president in 2002. Under his leadership, Columbia stands again at the very top rank of great research universities, distinguished by comprehensive academic excellence, historic institutional development, an innovative and sustainable approach to global engagement, and unprecedented levels of alumni involvement and financial stability. President Bollinger is Columbia’s first Seth Low Professor of the University, a member of the Columbia Law School faculty, and one of the country’s foremost First Amendment scholars. Each fall semester, he teaches “Freedom of Speech and Press” to Columbia undergraduate and graduate students. His next book, The Free Speech Century, co-edited with Geoffrey R. Stone, will be published in the fall of 2018 by Oxford University Press. As president of the University of Michigan, Bollinger led the school’s historic litigation in Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger, U.S. Supreme Court decisions that upheld and clarified the importance of diversity as a compelling justification for affirmative action in higher education. He speaks and writes frequently about the value of racial, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity to American society through opinion columns, media interviews, and public appearances around the country and across the world. Columbia remains one of the most diverse universities among its peer institutions and has seen the number of applicants to Columbia College and the selectivity of admissions at the school reach record levels. As Columbia’s president, Bollinger conceived and led the University’s most ambitious expansion in over a century with the creation of the Manhattanville campus in West Harlem, the first campus plan in the nation to receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest certification for sustainable development. An historic community benefits agreement emerging from the city and state review process for the new campus provides Columbia’s local neighborhoods with decades of investment in the community’s health, education, and economic growth. The first two buildings, the Jerome L. Greene Science Center and the Lenfest Center for the Arts, opened in the spring of 2017. The third, the Forum, which hosts conferences, meetings, and symposia, opens in September of 2018. Bollinger’s commitment to excellence in architecture is evident across Columbia’s campuses, from Renzo Piano’s master plan for Manhattanville, to the recently opened Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, designed by

Diller Scofidio + Renfro, to Rafael Moneo’s design for the Northwest Corner Building on the historic Morningside campus, to the Campbell Sports Center at Baker Field designed by Steven Holl. Among Bollinger’s signal achievements are the development of a network of eight Columbia Global Centers on four continents and the creation of new venues on the University’s home campus supporting global conversations and scholarship, including the World Leaders Forum and the Committee on Global Thought. From November 1996 to 2002, Bollinger was president of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he also served as a law professor and dean of the law school. He is a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He is widely published on legal and constitutional issues involving free speech and press, and his books include: Uninhibited, Robust, and Wide-Open: A Press for a New Century; Eternally Vigilant: Free Speech in the Modern Era; Images of a Free Press; and The Tolerant Society: Freedom of Speech and Extremist Speech in America. Bollinger has received the National Humanitarian Award from the National Conference for Community and Justice and the National Equal Justice Award from the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund for his leadership on affirmative action. He also received the Clark Kerr Award, the highest award conferred by the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, for his service to higher education, especially on matters of freedom of speech and diversity. He is the recipient of 10 honorary degrees from universities in this country and abroad. Bollinger is a director of Graham Holdings Company (formerly The Washington Post Company) and serves as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board. From 2007 to 2012, he was director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he also served as from chair from 2010 to 2012. After graduating from the University of Oregon and Columbia Law School, where he was an Articles Editor of Columbia Law Review, Bollinger served as law clerk for Judge Wilfred Feinberg on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for Chief Justice Warren Burger on the United States Supreme Court. He joined the University of Michigan Law School faculty in 1973. Bollinger was born in Santa Rosa, California and raised there and in Baker, Oregon. He is married to artist Jean Magnano Bollinger, and they have two children and five grandchildren.

PETER PILLING CAMPBELL FAMILY DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

P

eter Pilling was introduced as Columbia University’s Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education in February 2015 after serving as vice president at IMG College for nine years. Pilling is Columbia’s seventh athletic director since the position became full-time in 1931. With a family-oriented emphasis and focus, Pilling enters his fourth full academic year at the helm of a Columbia Intercollegiate Athletics Department which features 31 varsity sports, serves more than 750 student-athletes and boasts over 140 years of athletics tradition. His vision of “Victories in the Classroom, Victories in Competition and Victories in Life” has provided the foundation for Columbia Athletics and serves as its guiding principle. During Pilling’s first three years at Columbia, the Lions have claimed five team national championships (2017 archery compound; 2016 fencing, 2016 lightweight rowing, 2018 lightweight rowing, 2018 archery compound), four individual national championships (Jake Hoyle, 2016 men’s fencing/foil; Osama Khalifa, 2017 men’s squash; Bianca Gotuaco, 2017 archery; Iman Blow, 2018 women’s fencing/foil), 12 Ivy League team championships, 41 individual conference or Ivy League titles, along with the 2016 CollegeInsider.com postseason basketball tournament championship. Under Pilling’s guidance, the 2017-18 academic year ranked among the most successful in the 150-year history of Columbia Athletics. Columbia captured two national team titles (2018 men’s lightweight rowing, 2018 archery compound) and one individual national title (Iman Blow, women’s fencing), won a school-best seven Ivy League titles and secured its highest-ever finish in the national Learfield Directors Cup standings. In addition, 23 student-athletes earned All-America honors, eight student-athletes were named the Ivy League Player or Performer of the Year in their respective sports, six coaches garnered Ivy League Coach of the Year honors, three teams earned No. 1 national rankings, 10 programs earned top-25 national rankings, eight teams advanced to NCAA Championship events and eight teams finished either in first or second place in the Ivy League standings or championship event. Columbia student-athletes have also achieved in the classroom as 155 student-athletes attained a perfect 4.0 term grade point average, 941 student-athletes earned Dean’s List honors and posted a cumulative 3.30 grade point average over that span. In addition, 98 percent of all graduating 2016 and 2017 student-athletes either secured employment, enrolled in graduate school and/or completed training while securing employment with firms such as Goldman Sachs, Unilever, Morgan Stanley, MSNBC, JP Morgan Chase and Northwestern Mutual. On the facilities front, Pilling oversaw and directed the creation of the Bubble at Baker, an air-supported structure which is placed over Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium and enables Columbia student-athletes a much-needed indoor practice facility during the winter months of November through March. The Bubble at Baker opened in January 2017. Pilling has also overseen the development and evaluation process of revitalizing Dodge Fitness Center on Columbia’s campus. In November 2016, he introduced a new branding and recruiting initiative #OnlyHere, which focuses on the assortment of advantages to the Columbia student-athlete. #OnlyHere emphasizes Columbia’s extraordinary location in New York City, unparralleled academic and career opportunities, an elite-level athletic performance program and a “built to win” foundation in facilities and personnel. In June 2017, Pilling unveiled a new multimedia agreement with national marketing giants JMI Sports and IMG for Columbia Athletics, a contract which provides valuable national and international brand exposure and recognition to the University community and New York City, while also providing for an even greater experience for student-athletes. As the birthplace of FM radio, the fields of genetics and anthropology, the nation’s oldest literary magazine and first Black student advocacy group on a multi-racial campus, Columbia has carried on a tradition of both social and scientific innovation for over 250 years. Notable Columbians include Barack Obama, Isaac Asimov, Madeline Albright, Langston Hughes, Jack Kerouac, Julia Stiles and many more spanning every professional field. Columbia maintains an intimate college campus within one of the world’s most vibrant cities. The seminar-style Core Curriculum attracts intensely free-minded scholars and connects all undergraduates. Science and engineering students pursue cutting-edge research in worldclass laboratories with faculty members at the forefront of scientific discovery. Classroom discussions are only the beginning of an education. Ideas spill out from the classrooms, electrifying the campus and Morningside Heights. Friendships formed in the residence halls solidify during a game of frisbee on the South Lawn or over bagels on the steps of Low Library.

COLUMBIA GIVING DAY RECAP

C

olumbia Athletics continues to the raise bar on Columbia Giving Day as the department raised a record $4.13 million on a total of 4,999 gifts, Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Peter Pilling announced Thursday. The figure recorded over the 24-hour-event on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 surpassed the previous Columbia Athletics’ fundraising Giving Day record of $3.17 million set in 2017. Columbia University as a whole raised $20.15 million. “The Giving Day donations from the Columbia Athletics Community is inspiring,” Pilling said. “We would like to thank everyone – alumni, staff and friends of our athletics program – who contributed to our success yesterday. The money raised benefits all 800 student-athletes, all 31 varsity sports programs, our facilities and resources and all of our club and intramural sports programs. Because of the outstanding support we have here at Columbia, we once again were able to surpass last year’s total and set a new benchmark for the seventh consecutive year. These funds will enable our department to enhance support for our sports programs and student-athletes. It was truly an ‘#OnlyHere’ 24 hours.” Head coaches of Columbia’s 31-varsity sports were all pleased with the results. “Fencing looks at Giving Day in the same way as a fencing competition,” Head Fencing Coach Michael Aufrichtig said. “We go all in and give everything to perform our best. We had a goal of 600 donors and $150,000. We reached our goal as a team! Everyone preformed, from our student athletes, coaching staff, team managers and the rest of the fencing family.”

HERE ARE A FEW INTERESTING FACTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS FROM GIVING DAY:

• In comparing figures with Giving Day 2018, Columbia Athletics experienced a 30.3 percent increase in dollars raised and a 7.5 percent increase in number of gifts. Last year, Columbia Athletics raised $3.17 million on 4,644 total gifts. • This is the first Giving Day in which all 31 varsity sports raised at least $23,000. • Columbia’s Fund for Excellence raised over $70,000 from 89 gifts. • Columbia Athletics finished in second place among University departments, finishing only behind Columbia College. • Columbia Athletics won five hourly challenges including the Most Overall Donors during two time periods (10-11 a.m. and 3-4 p.m.), the Most Faculty/Staff donors, Random #ColumbiaGivingDay Hashtag (12-1 a.m.) and Furthest Gift from Campus (1-2 a.m.). • In addition to its varsity sports programs, Columbia Athletics also raised money for club sports, the Bubble at Baker, the Campbell Championship Fund, Sports Medicine and various other projects. • #ColumbiaGivingDay was trending on twitter for a period of time and Columbia Athletics leveraged a theme of #Lions360 to drive the effort.

CAPTAINS’ CORNER GoColumbiaLions.com is catching up with senior captains Landon Baty, Kyle Castner, Mike Hinton and Markham Paukune for a weekly podcast, which will give fans an inside look at the 2018 Lions. The podcast will be made available on Wednesday’s leading up to game day. The entire audio and previous episodes are available on iTunes (search for Captains’ Corner and subscribe), SoundCloud or by visiting www.gocolumbialions.com/captainscorner.

Kyle, last week was a huge game for you with five touchdowns in a win over Brown. What did it mean to get Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week? Castner: It was a great feeling. It’s even more special when you get to share it with the team and the people you care so much about. We’ve been through so much this season and to come into Brown and come out in the second half and be dominant. It was awesome to put it all together offensively and defensively. What did they coaches say or do at halftime that was so effective last week? Hinton: The coaches really don’t yell that much at halftime so

the fact that they came with a lot of energy, it motivated us. As seniors, we have to realize it’s the last time we’re playing on the road, so we wanted to come out (and change) the momentum. After you were able to take the lead, the defense really stepped up and was able to put pressure on the quarterback. How important was that to maintain the advantage and keep momentum on your side? Baty: We gave up three big plays, and that had been our Achilles heel the last two weeks. At halftime, Coach Ferraro came in pretty fired up and let us know this isn’t the defense we’ve prided ourselves on the last three years. We know when all 11 of us are

42

doing our assignments, we’re one of the best defenses in the Ivy League. Is it going to be difficult to put aside the emotions of senior day and playing your last home game? Paukune: Once that first whistle blows, all that kind of goes away and you get immersed in the game. We also have an opportunity to do something that hasn’t been done here in 57 years in having back-to-back winning seasons. So, that’s definitely on the mind of all of us seniors. Castner: We’re leaving our mark here. It’s not only a testament to the upper classmen, but to the coaches as well. Our class led the way, and the class last year helped out too. Hopefully, these last two seasons really pave the way for the future. What are going to be some keys against Cornell? Baty: We know it’s going to be tough. The last four years have been a battle. Last year, we were 7-2 and a couple bang-bang plays here and there and it could have gone the other way. We know it’s a rivalry game and I feel like it’s grown because both programs have kind of ascended a little bit.

pen to student-athletes, coaches and staff in January 2013, the Campbell Sports Center continues to make a tangible, immediate impact on the Columbia Athletics program. This signature presence at 218th Street and Broadway sends a powerful message – to student-athletes, to coaches, to the campus community, to alumni and to the sporting public – about Columbia’s commitment to athletics. The Campbell Sports Center provides stateof-the art training and learning facilities for nine of Columbia’s outdoor sports programs, including a multi-media theater-style classroom, a strength and conditioning center, and a new student-athlete lounge and hospitality pavilion. The Campbell Sports Center, the first new building at the Baker Athletics Complex in more than 60 years, honors one of Columbia’s most accomplished athletics alumni: the captain of the 1961 Ivy League Champion football Lions, former Columbia head football coach, “Coach of Silicon Valley,” and former Chair of the University Trustees, William V. Campbell ’62CC.

• 6,400 square feet, double height ceiling, mirrored wall • Head strength coach office, assistant coach office, nutrition bar • 14 lifting platforms, 2 power squat machines, assorted weight dumbbells, 3 treadmills, 4 stationary bikes, 8 32” flat-screen TVs

ROBERT K. KRAFT FIELD AT LAWRENCE A. WIEN STADIUM

L

ocated on the banks of the Hudson and Harlem Rivers and within Columbia University’s 27-acre Baker Athletic Complex, Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium (pronounced WEEN) is the cornerstone of an impressive collection of facilities for Columbia Football. One of the most modern football stadiums on the East Coast featuring beautiful views of the Hudson River and fall foliage from adjacent Inwood Hill Park, Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium was described by Sports Illustrated as “one of the most beautiful places in the country to watch a football game.” In its fourth decade as the official Lions’ Den, Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium seats 17,000 and is home to Columbia’s football and women’s lacrosse teams. The stadium, which opened in 1984, also boasts a 400-meter outdoor track and is utilized by Columbia’s other outdoor varsity sports. It is the largest multi-purpose stadium on the island of Manhattan and the only regulation-sized football stadium with a capacity of 10,000 or more in Manhattan. A brand-new FieldTurf artificial playing surface was installed at Wien Stadium during the summer of 2015. The Lions practice and compete on FieldTurf, the same infill system used by many NFL teams. FieldTurf was first installed at the stadium in 2005 replacing AstroTurf. In October 2007, Columbia announced that the playing field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium would be named Robert K. Kraft Field in honor of Robert Kraft ‘63CC, owner of the New England Patriots and Chairman and CEO of the Kraft Group. Dressing facilities for teams, coaches and officials are located within Chrystie Field House, while the coaches’ offices, team meeting rooms, conference rooms and fully equipped training facility are located at the Campbell Sports Center, which opened in January 2013.

BUBBLE AT BAKER Each winter from December through March, Columbia varsity sports teams have access to a brand-new indoor winter practice facility as the University officially opened its Seasonal Air-Supported Structure (SASS) at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Located at Columbia’s Baker Athletics Complex, the Bubble at Baker is a 92,000-square foot, heated air-supported dome enclosing Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The facility also features a brand-new Field Turf Revolution 360 playing surface. All seven of Columbia’s field sports teams housed at the Baker Athletics Complex (football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey and lacrosse) receive access to the new indoor practice facility.

“Inside the ring, I fight to win. Outside the ring, I fight CTEPH. - Elvis Medrano, 2018 PHA Celebrity Champion
