We will be using CNS, Kirkwall; Orkney College, Kirkwall; The Orkney Museum, Kirkwall; Corrigall Farm Museum, Harray; Pier Arts Centre, Stromness; Maritime Studies Department, Stromness; Maeshowe, Stenness; and St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall. We shall provide all transport and pay any entry costs. Do I get to keep my creations from the week? Of course! We look forward to seeing what you will create!

Art & Design This purpose-built facility offers excellent studio accommodation overlooking Kirkwall Bay and the North Isles of Orkney. The studios are well equipped to cater for a wide variety of fine art and textile activities. Internationally recognised, the Pier Arts Centre houses a permanent collection and curates a yearround programme of changing exhibitions and events. Centre for Nordic Studies (CNS) CNS has an interdisciplinary research and educational focus, and currently offers five postgraduate degrees. We also offer services to the local communities and provide an interdisciplinary community resource. Our key aim is to provide an overarching focus for locative research in Orkney and Shetland, including their relationship to the North Atlantic Rim. Orkney Through Time Summer Course in Kirkwall, Orkney

A week of illustrated talks, field trips and practical handson creativity


Day One: Picts and their Pictures CNS art historian Victoria Whitworth gives us an illustrated talk on Pictish art, followed by a trip to the Orkney Museum to see the real thing. After lunch, we try to recreate our own Pictish art in textile form with Day Two: Vikings! local designer, Kirsteen Stewart. We start early with a trip to Maeshowe to Venue: CNS and Orkney Museum see its amazing runes, followed by an illustrated talk on Viking age sculpture by CNS lecturer Victoria Whitworth. The afternoon will be spent making Day Three: Medieval Kirkwall your own carvings in stone with artist Frances Pelly. At the heart of Medieval Kirkwall lies Venues: Maeshowe, Orkney College the centuries old St Magnus Cathedral as a jewel in red sandstone. We’ll spend the morning exploring its secrets and hidden details armed with cameras. In the afternoon photographer Rebecca Marr introduces us to old Orkney, seen through the lens of the legendary photographer Tom Kent. Using traditional manipulation techniques, we then learn how to manipulate our own photos. Venues: St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney College

Day Four: Writers, Landscape & Tradition We take a trip around Orkney’s West Mainland and spend time at the gorgeous Happy Valley with CNS lecturer Ragnhild Ljosland in the morning, where we’ll talk about folklore, traditional life and poetry. After lunch at a local inn we’ll be trying our hand at needle felting/punching at Corrigall Farm Museum with Helga Tait from Orkney College’s Art & Design Department. Venues: West Mainland, Corrigall Farm Museum Day Five: Fine Art, An Unfolding Gift This day shall be spent in Stromness, where we take a tour of the Pier Arts Centre’s permanent collection of 20th & 21st century British modernist art and the Centre’s temporary exhibition programme in the morning. After lunch at a local inn, we shall have a print workshop with Morag Tweedie from the Art & Design Department at the Maritime Studies premises. Venues: Pier Arts Centre, Maritime Studies

All materials will be provided. Tea and coffee will be available as part of your course. Lunch is not provided.
