‘Country Bazaar’ has been updated

by Tucker Hottes STAFF WRITER

A longtime summer tradition is getting some fresh updates this year — the 24th Our Lady of the Snows Parish Country Bazaar will take place at the Church of St. Benedict, 1845 Newton Ransom Blvd. in Clarks Summit, Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 4 to 6. Bazaar co-chair Mary Carroll Donahoe said she was happy to get involved in this year’s event. “I’ve been doing special events for over 25 years, but it’s my first summer that I’ve been in the area to be able to chair it,” she said. “I love putting my special events twist on it — keeping traditions, but adding some wonderful new things.” Some of the new features this year include a consolidated main tent and the addition of miniature golf. “There used to be a lot of little tents, but we’re going to have a massive tent,” she said. “People won’t have to worry about rain, the bands will be underneath the tent, there will be dancing, line dancing and different entertainment every night.” Also new for this year is the Garden of Light and Hope. “There’s a beautiful field, almost a valley, that swings down the hill from the church,” said Donahoe. “For $5, people can put an intention or prayer on a luminary bag, and we’re going to light that field Saturday night with 1,000 prayer intentions. In the middle will be bags in red that spell out ‘hope’.” In addition to the regular lineup of games for kids, games of chance for adults, bingo, basket raffles and all the yearly bazaar staples, a miniature golf course

will debut. “When we re-configured the plotting to use one large tent, it opened things up for another tent, and we brainstormed some ideas,” Donahoe said. “Somebody said, ‘what about miniature golf?’ so we did some homework, and said, ‘Done, let’s do it.’ I think it’s going to be a huge hit.” Bargain hunters will find selections of antiques, vintage collectibles, books and plants throughout the bazaar. “We’ve got a lot of ‘wows’ coming in for the bargain barn and the antique barn,” said Donahoe. With such a large event, Donahoe said planning and coordinating takes a large amount of community support. “There are about 45 different From left, front row: bazaar co-chairman Tom Cummings and committee chairs and a score of sponsor committee chairman Chris Calvey.
