‘Country Bazaar’ has been updated
by Tucker Hottes STAFF WRITER
A longtime summer tradition is getting some fresh updates this year — the 24th Our Lady of the Snows Parish Country Bazaar will take place at the Church of St. Benedict, 1845 Newton Ransom Blvd. in Clarks Summit, Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 4 to 6. Bazaar co-chair Mary Carroll Donahoe said she was happy to get involved in this year’s event. “I’ve been doing special events for over 25 years, but it’s my first summer that I’ve been in the area to be able to chair it,” she said. “I love putting my special events twist on it — keeping traditions, but adding some wonderful new things.” Some of the new features this year include a consolidated main tent and the addition of miniature golf. “There used to be a lot of little tents, but we’re going to have a massive tent,” she said. “People won’t have to worry about rain, the bands will be underneath the tent, there will be dancing, line dancing and different entertainment every night.” Also new for this year is the Garden of Light and Hope. “There’s a beautiful field, almost a valley, that swings down the hill from the church,” said Donahoe. “For $5, people can put an intention or prayer on a luminary bag, and we’re going to light that field Saturday night with 1,000 prayer intentions. In the middle will be bags in red that spell out ‘hope’.” In addition to the regular lineup of games for kids, games of chance for adults, bingo, basket raffles and all the yearly bazaar staples, a miniature golf course

will debut. “When we re-configured the plotting to use one large tent, it opened things up for another tent, and we brainstormed some ideas,” Donahoe said. “Somebody said, ‘what about miniature golf?’ so we did some homework, and said, ‘Done, let’s do it.’ I think it’s going to be a huge hit.” Bargain hunters will find selections of antiques, vintage collectibles, books and plants throughout the bazaar. “We’ve got a lot of ‘wows’ coming in for the bargain barn and the antique barn,” said Donahoe. With such a large event, Donahoe said planning and coordinating takes a large amount of community support. “There are about 45 different From left, front row: bazaar co-chairman Tom Cummings and committee chairs and a score of sponsor committee chairman Chris Calvey. Green Scene: Arborvitae Surprise “The best place for arborvitaes is in the nursery.” I repeated this arborist joke to a customer early in the week. He had explained to me that with his advancing years he thought he should no longer climb a ladder to rope his arborvitaes before winter. (Since the wood of arborvitaes is not rigid, and they are typically multistemmed, a wet snow, if it does not break them, can crudely invert their conical shape). The customer had asked me if I could reduce the size of these eighteen footers on the corner of his lot. I explained that although this was possible for the short term, the plants would still be pushing toward their genetically programmed mature height. We then looked together across the street at the 40 foot tall specimen at the end of his neighbor’s driveway. I suggested he put all his maintenance dollars into removal and replacement. I was feeling good about beating up on this thuja genus until later in the week when I met a surprise. After taking a year off of maintenance, a different customer had asked me to come back and reshape his topiaries. The species of the plants was not fresh in my mind. However, as I was carefully restoring the shapes of his shrubs, an irony was emerging: To my surprise, I realized that I was working on the very species that earlier in the week I had smugly denigrated. The joke was on me. Not only did the arborvitae do well when kept as a topiary (see photo), it would also not have to be roped up if because of topiary shearing it never developed its multi-stemmed crown. So although the arborvitae still has significant limitations when planted as a conical landscape specimen or as part of a privacy screen, it can be used successfully as a topiary in the landscape. This discussion brings a new dimension to the “right plant, right place” maxim. Instead of thinking merely of size factors when selecting a plant, one should also consider maintenance requirements and growth character. For example, in the right setting, arborvitaes can make a lovely privacy screen. However, before planting, gardeners should count the cost, knowing that even with annual shearing, snow load
may distort or destroy the form you value. The shrub is native from Pennsylvania northwards, except in the mountains, and thinking about its native habitat provides context for thinking about its landscape use. In the northern forest, soft wood can protect an evergreen tree from breaking under snow-load. Preserving a perfect shape or perfect size matters little in the wild. As with all “much-cultivated” landscape plants, the important question is the human ingredient: If you have financial or time constraints, ask not what your plants can do for you — ask what you must do for your plants. Reach me at josarhuap@aol.com. Joshua Arp is an ISA-certified municipal specialist, Clarks Summit’s municipal arborist and an operator of an organic lawn and landscape maintenance business.
