OXLEY INTEGRATED ADVISING PROGRAM

Named for Geraldine Motta Oxley ’51—a devoted alumna and benefactor of the College—the Oxley Integrated Advising Program offers comprehensive academic and career advising to all undergraduate students.

Whether you arrive at the Mount thinking you know what you want to be or not, Oxley advisors help you build the skills—and the plan—needed to discover your best academic and professional options. And all that might even change along your journey…

Support from advisors on the Oxley team begins from your very first day on campus and continues all the way up to the moment you graduate. Together, you’ll work to identify your strengths and interests, you’ll explore unfamiliar ideas, you’ll be challenged to do better than your best, and you’ll become equipped for success in any field.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

You won’t find advising at any other college or university like you will at the Mount.

We take a holistic approach to guiding you though your college journey. You’ll be paired with not one, but two advisors who will work collaboratively and guide you through your four years of study: an Oxley advisor and a faculty advisor.

Your Oxley advisor will help you strategize how to translate what you love into a career, and your faculty advisor will guide you through your major course of study and make sure you take the classes you need to graduate. You’ll get to know both your advisors personally—they’ll help you understand curriculum requirements, explore internships and job and graduate school opportunities, and connect you to the greater Mount community and beyond.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR MAJOR

At the Mount, we emphasize the ultimate credentials: a repertoire of analytical skills; clear, critical thinking; the ability to express yourself both orally and in writing; and the power to weigh moral and ethical questions seriously.

No matter what you decide to study—whether it’s nursing, accounting, studio art, psychology, biochemistry (the list goes on!)—you’ll learn how to transfer the skills you learn within the classroom into a fulfilling career.

Our combination of challenge and support in our Mount Pathways Programs—HEOP, TRiO, and MAP—will create real opportunity for your future life and career.

HEOP

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is a partnership between the Mount the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The HEOP program is designed for students who have the potential and drive to further their education, but due to limited academic and financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college.

HEOP offers a wide array of academic, financial, and personal support services in order to help you with the transition to college and thrive. Beginning with the required prefreshman HEOP Summer Program and continuing across your four years at the College, you’ll engage in a dynamic learning community and develop critically important skills both within and beyond the classroom.

First member of your family to pursue higher education? Looking for some additional guidance while adjusting to college life? The Mount’s TRiO Program—made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education—assists low-income and first-generation college students with superb academic and professional growth. TRiO offers students academic assistance, career education, counseling, leadership development, and cultural awareness. You’ll complete a Summer Enrichment Program leading up to your first semester that will introduce you to the challenges and triumphs of college life and help you get adjusted prior to your first day of classes.

MAP

The Mount Access Program (MAP) is designed for students who show potential and motivation to succeed in college, but have standardized test scores or high school records below normal admission requirements. MAP combines academic support with community enrichment to enhance your ability and potential to succeed in college. You’ll participate in cohorted sections of fundamental core courses where you’ll get to experience college classes alongside your fellow MAP students—meaning you can lean on your peers for help and accountability. With the integrated support of faculty members and your advisors, MAP students are able to enhance their independent living and learning.

THE FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE

Nervous about your transition from high school to college?

That’s okay—and totally normal!

Every incoming first-year student is enrolled in the First Year Experience (FYE) course during their first semester of study. FYE is a stimulating and informational class that helps you expand on your study skills, explore service opportunities, learn about the history of the Mount, integrate career education into your studies, and develop strong relationships with your peers. Classes are taught by faculty advisors who will guide you through the first few weeks of your Mount journey. You’ll be set up for success—think of FYE as your “survival skills package” for not only college life, but beyond.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Academic Resource Center

The Academic Resource Center, known on campus as the ARC, provides comprehensive (and 100% free!) tutoring services for all areas of study to students who need an extra boost in their classes. Tutors will help you review course content and papers, prepare for classwork or tests, learn note-taking and textbook reading techniques, and organize projects. You can take advantage of both Individual tutoring sessions—with a peer or professional tutor— and study groups led by course experts.

The ARC also offers specialty workshops, writing support, time management tips, and reinforcement of study skills. You can also get assistance with all stages of the writing process from brainstorming to revision—in every discipline.

Need help after hours? We’ve got you covered! Online tutoring is available 24/7 both on and off campus.

Office of Accessibility Services

The Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) seeks to provide support services that enable students with documented disabilities to maximize their academic participation and learning experience. Through reasonable accommodations, you can gain equal access to academic opportunities by reducing or eliminating disadvantages due to a disability.

The provision of all reasonable accommodations and services is based upon a caseby-case assessment of the impact of the student’s diagnosis on his/her academic performance or the College’s participation at a given time in the student’s academic life. Covered disabilities may include physical, sensory, cognitive, or mental health impairments that substantially limit one or more of a student’s major life activities.

A reasonable accommodation request can be initiated at any time during your academic journey at the College. Remember, you’re not in it alone!

HONORS PROGRAM

Want to enhance and enrich your academic experience with additional rigor? Look no further than our Honors Program, which offers an exceptional and unique approach to the College’s core curriculum for students representing the top 5% of their class. You’ll take interdisciplinary classes co-taught by two professors—specifically designed for students to develop advanced academic skills. Students have the opportunity to strengthen their intellectual curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills through a challenging and socially intimate program of like-minded peers.

Professors encourage contemplation of moral and ethical approaches to knowledge. At the Mount, we seek the education of the whole person: the heart, as well as the mind. In Honors Program courses, expect to engage in discussion and inquiry with your peers, collaborate on group projects, and make use of the cultural and educational opportunities that abound in the local community, New York City, and beyond.

The Honors Program culminates in the completion of the Senior Honors Thesis—an original piece of scholarship reflecting each students’ interests and written through the guidance of a faculty mentor—which is presented at an annual symposium each May.

INTERNSHIPS— CONNECTING THE CLASSROOM TO THE WORLD

It’s a big world and Mount students are ready for it.

We’re just minutes away from midtown Manhattan—which ensures you’ll have ready access to internship opportunities at top businesses, entertainment companies, healthcare facilities, government agencies, and more.

Through an internship, you’ll be able to explore your interests and find what you like—or what you don’t like. You’ll gain invaluable professional experience, build your resume (and your confidence, too!), and connect with people who might just become your mentors or even your future employers.

And don’t worry: you don’t have to go through this process alone! Your Oxley and faculty advisors will help you find the right internship for you.

STUDY ABROAD

No matter your major, every Mount student has the opportunity to study abroad. And many even imbue their study abroad experiences with meaningful work and service across the globe.

Our study abroad programs broaden cultural and intellectual horizons and deepen our students’ perspectives on their home country and the world. We encourage students to live and learn in foreign countries to enhance their development as global citizens through a variety of semester-long and short-term programs.

Recently, Hannah Eschmann ’22 and Naomi Juerva ’23 spent a semester together in Thessaloniki, Greece and Leslie Peralta ’19 lived and served the local community in Cusco, Peru for five months.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Center for Leadership

The Center for Leadership provides opportunities for students to recognize their own potential and use that discovery to create more meaningful and impactful engagement at and beyond the Mount. You can join a national leadership honor society, participate in group workshops, listen to motivational talks from industry leaders, and even attend the annual Center for Leadership Summit. Led by a remarkable advisory council consisting of campus leaders, College trustees, and industry professionals, the Center for Leadership will help you strengthen your understanding of how to manifest the best of yourself as an engaged member of the community.

Mount Mentors

The Mount Mentors Program pairs accomplished alums, trustees, and friends of the College with exceptional students to help our undergraduates channel their passions and talents toward successful, fulfilling professional lives. You will most likely be paired with a mentor who works outside your field of interest to open your horizons to new career possibilities and connections. By developing relationships with such industry leaders, Mount mentees emphasize the transferability and universal nature of the skills that it takes to delve into any career.

Undergraduate Research

The Center for Undergraduate Research sponsors and supports students developing original research across the College—frequently inspired by work that begins in the classroom. Working alongside faculty mentors, research experience allows you to expand your methodological skills, encourages you to develop an expertise in an area of study, and prepares you for graduate programs and future employment. From psychology to genetics, students often present their nationally recognized projects at conferences across the country.
