ealthy eating habits and gym routines can be hard to sustain. For parents who juggle busy schedules, it can be particularly challenging to squeeze in the recommended amount of physical activity each day. However, with a little motivation and a dose of creativity, families can resolve to stay active and get fit together – without stepping foot into the gym. Here are seven ideas to consider:

H

1 / Explore the neighborhood. Take the children on regular strolls around the block. Create your own nature walks by identifying different insects, leaves and animals along the way. Collect pinecones, acorns or other foliage that can be used for fun crafts back at the house.

2 / Take advantage of local parks. Visit a local park to discover different walking paths or bike trails. And spend some time on the playground while you’re at it. Equipment, such as monkey bars, climbing walls and balance beams are all fun ways to get moving.

3 / Invest in gear without breaking the bank. Athletic clothes and accessories with the latest performance fabrics enhance comfort and safety while working out. What’s more, new gear can be a great way for each family member to show his or her sense of style, which can be just the moti-

vation needed to get moving. Footwear is especially important to replace often, as worn out athletic shoes can increase risk of injury. To go easy on the wallet, consider shopping at retailers like Rack Room Shoes, which offers everyday value on brands for the entire family. For more information, visit www.RackRoomShoes.com.

list, a color-coded spreadsheet can be a fun visual reminder to test out new activities. Hang this in a common area, such as the kitchen, to keep track. Once you’ve got the plan in place, get into a fitness routine that works for your family and stick with it.

4 / Schedule dance parties. Enjoy music and shake off some stress by scheduling regular dance parties after school, during commercial breaks or before bedtime.

5 / Make a game out of chores. Make the most of family chores. Shoveling snow, raking leaves and mowing the grass do not just enhance your home’s curb appeal; they are all are great forms of exercise.

6 / Get in a routine. A routine ensures consistency. Set aside time each week for bike rides, tag football and soccer games, all of which can all be done in the neighborhood, backyard or at a favorite park. In bad weather, head to a local trampoline park, climbing gym or indoor soccer field.

7 / Make a Matrix. Planning fun activities increases the chance you will keep up the good work. For those who love to check items off a

kin cancer rates are skyrocketing in the United States, where more than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually, and around the world. In fact, one in five Americans is diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their lives. It is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more new cases than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Skin cancer is a malignant condition that begins with the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Recent studies show it can result as an accumulative effect from sun damage (90% in the case of nonmelanoma skin cancers). Florida’s near year-round high temperatures means we are all at a higher risk. What are the different types of skin cancer? • Melanoma is the most deadly of all skin cancers. It causes more than 75% of skin cancer deaths. One American dies of melanoma almost every hour. • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the

most frequently occurring skin cancer. Though they are generally easily treated, BCCs tend to keep growing if untreated, and in rare cases can start to spread. • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the second most frequently occurring skin cancer. An estimated 65% of them arise in lesions previously diagnosed as AK. Most are easily treated, but if not removed, some can metastasize and spread to distant tissues and organs, becoming life threatening. • Actinic Keratosis (AK) are pre-cancers that can turn into SCC if left untreated. They are often an early stage in the development of skin cancer. Early detection of skin cancer is key. Cure rates are high, and recurrence rates

are low for cancers that are caught and treated early. It is important to check for changes in size, shape and color of pigmented areas. The Skin Cancer foundation highly recommends an annual full-body skin exam by a dermatologist.

Mosquito bites are not just a nuisance; they are associated with Dengue Fever, Zika, West Nile and Chikungunya viruses. Ward off itch, discomfort and more serious threats by avoiding standing water whenever possible, and dressing in loose long sleeves and pants.

Sun Protection One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime, and men ages 15 to 39 are 55 percent more likely to die of melanoma than women in the same age group. However, a recent survey from Bullfrog Sunscreen found that while 85 percent of male outdoor sports enthusiasts ages 18 to 54 claim their prime motivation for engaging in outdoor sports is “health and wellness,” two in 10 respon-

dents do not use sunscreen at all. Of the remaining 80 percent who said they do use sunscreen, 56 percent use it only occasionally. Those spending time outdoors should wear a hat and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside, and then reapply at least every two hours or after swimming, sweating and immediately after towel drying. A breathable, sweat-resistant formula like BullFrog Land Sport is ideal for tennis, golf and other land sports, while an advanced water-resistant formula should be used for swimming and other water sports. More skin safety tips can be found at www.BullFrogSunscreen.com. While the warmer months are a great time for all your favorite outdoor activities, from hiking to swimming to camping, this time of year comes with its own health hazards. Luckily, there are many steps you can take to protect skin.

Mosquito Protection

Use a DEET-free repellent such as BullFrog Mosquito Coast, which repels mosquitoes for up to eight hours. The formula is a particularly good option for outdoor enthusiasts. Unlike DEET formulations, there is no need to wash it off when returning indoors. Different from repellent alone, it also offers SPF 30 sun protection, so you can pack light when you are on the move.

early half of all Americans participate in at least one outdoor activity each year, according to statistics from the Outdoor Foundation. And while many of those exercising outdoors take necessary precautions to reduce their risk for injury, they are not always as dedicated to skin protection. “It’s ironic that protecting exposed skin is overlooked by so many outdoor enthusiasts otherwise committed to their health and wellness,” says Brevard, Floridabased dermatologist, Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick. During the long days of summer, outdoor enthusiasts should take the following steps to avoid bites, burns and more.

Set Goals Mindfully Setting a goal to “lose weight” sounds great, but it is pretty vague. It’s hard to achieve a goal without a specific plan or focus. Remember to think about your health beyond just the number on the scale. Whether it’s deciding to train for a 5k race or choosing to reduce your sugar intake by half, getting specific and setting realistic goals helps you get a clear sense as to whether you were successful.

The plan includes a thermogenic fatburning supplement taken in the morning, a protein-rich shake for lunch, and an evening fiber drink to help control dinner portions. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. According to Modere, this product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. “The lifestyle-based approach to dieting can mean better and more sustainable results than fads that require you to eat only from limited list of foods,” says Greg Horn, formulator of Modere M3. The plan also requires you to make key changes that support health and weight management by letting you pick three of the five healthy lifestyle behavior options such as committing to walking 7,500 steps a day, cutting out fried foods and sugary drinks, or avoiding refined flour and white rice. osing weight and living a healthier lifestyle top millions of people’s list of goals. Unfortunately, it is a lot easier to set a goal than it is to actually achieve it, so it’s important to have a game plan if you want to see results. Here are some sustainable tips to help you lose weight and feel great.

choice. Eliminate high-calorie beverages like juice and soda from your diet. Get started by setting a simple goal of drinking at least five 12-ounce glasses of water a day.

A sustainable diet is not about deprivation, it’s about eating nutritious, enjoyable meals. For example, a Mediterranean diet, which focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and healthy fats like olive oil; often offers better nutrition, better flavors and better results than a fad diet. In fact, people who followed a Mediterranean diet lost 52 percent more weight than those with a standard low-fat diet says a study published in a peer reviewed journal. Over a period of two years, the Mediterranean diet group lost 9.7 pounds while the low fat diet group only lost 6.3 pounds.

Make Exercise Fun Exercise is critical for a healthy body and mind. Whether it’s taking the dog out for a daily walk, signing up for a dance

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, and with the influence of Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram it’s easy to want to go overboard for your special day. It is common for couples to become engaged and get married within a year, which is a short amount of time to plan an extravagant event. It is not unusual for people to make rash decisions while under stress, which is what leads to couples spending well over the amount they originally planned on spending. One important aspect of wedding planning is finding a reasonable budget, and staying true to that budget as much as possible. We have compiled a list of 5 ways to save on your wedding.

1 The Venue Finding the perfect venue is important. Whether you must follow family tradition and marry in the same church as your great grandparents, or you have decided you want find a fun and unique venue, it’s also best to find a budget-

5 Ways to Save on Your Wedding friendly venue. If you find yourself following tradition, most churches have reception halls where you are free to decorate as you wish without spending a fortune (bonus: no one will get lost while traveling from the church to the reception). For a more fun and unique venue, check out local golf courses, hotels, or farms. Many venues include items such as tables, chairs, tableware, and more. Check your local listings for more information on possible venues. 2 The Food Food can often be a budget breaker. Catering can cost thousands as many of them charge per person. When choosing meals for your event try to find items that fit your taste buds, theme, and budget. The surf and turf may not be reasonable, but there are plenty of meal options for your guests without emptying your bank. A buffet may be more affordable than a plated dinner. Also, check to see if your venue provides food for your event. Explore your op-

tions and find the best selection for you and your budget. 3 The Floral From centerpieces to bouquets, floral is one of the most important and expensive aspects of a wedding. The average bridal bouquets costs anywhere from $100-$250 depending on size and flower choice. One money-saving tip is to use artificial flowers instead of real flowers; they still look great in photos and can be preserved for keepsakes. Mix it up and use real flowers for your bouquet, and artificial for centerpieces and decoration. 4 The Cake One of the main events at the reception is the cake, and it can cost hundreds and even thousands, depending on size and detail. One of the best ways to save on the cake is to have the bakery make a fake cake. Yes, that’s right, a fake cake. Bakeries are now making extravagant cakes on cardboard and have pre-cut slices to give to guests. There

will be one tier that will be real so you can still cut your cake. The best part is, it’s half the price of a real cake. 5 The Bar Weddings are a celebration, and celebrations call for a toast, but let’s skip on the top shelf open bar and expensive champagne. Instead, provide your guests with beer and wine or signature cocktails. This is a great way to express your personality and have your guests enjoy the party without going bankrupt. There are many great ways to save on your wedding day. It is a day to be remembered and enjoyed, not one to stress over. With Pinterest, Instagram, and Web sites such as www.lifeafteryes.com, you can find hundreds of ideas and products all while saving over 40% on retail prices. Be sure to engaged family and friends to help you with this special day. Most importantly, have fun and cherish the memories.

One entire “wall” of the dining room is actually the entry and hallway. There are a couple of pillars, but they don’t fully define the space. The room did not feel cozy. In order to define the dining room and clearly separate it from the hallway, a large area rug was selected. The rug is in soft colors with an all over pattern and works to make the room feel warm and inviting. Upholstered chairs were selected to further define the space and encourage lingering conversation over meals. The long drapery panels soften the windows and walls.

The molding squares were removed from the walls. Then the wallpaper was removed and the walls textured and painted. The chandelier was not only un-attractive, its location was not ideal for placement of the new dining table. It was moved to a better location, which meant not only repairing the ceiling, but painting it as well. There are two entrances into the dining room - one from the entry and one leading into the kitchen. I chose a long dining table that is a bit narrower than standard in order to allow comfortable dining as well as ease in walking through the room.

19 SPRING-SUMMER 2017

This traditional dining room design uses neutral colors and fabrics with pops of wedgewood blue and silvery greens creating a warm and relaxing space. The upholstered chairs with nail head trim accents are as comfortable as they are attractive. The room is crowned with a chandelier that is elegant yet simple.

The homeowner wanted a contemporary, coastal room and this room was the total opposite. The BEFORE room was busy with all of the molding squares the previous homeowner had installed below the chair rail. The dark wallpaper coupled with the deep mustard paint made the room very dark. And the pink and seafoam painted chandelier just had to go! The red toned wood floor was very formal/traditional.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR A CLEAN AND CLUTTER-FREE HOME

Papers piling up? Toys taking over? If your home is more cluttered than clean, you’re not alone – 85 percent of homeowners say that organization and storage is the most desired feature in a home, according to OrganizedLiving.com. Your clean-home dreams can come true. In fact, simply getting rid of clutter alone can eliminate 40 percent of housework in the average home, according to the National Soap and Detergent Association. With a few helpful hints your home can get organized and stay that way.

Conquer a Clutter-free Kitchen.

1

SPRING-SUMMER 2017

With a wealth of gadgets, it’s no wonder the kitchen is a clutter culprit. To start your cleanse, remove everything from drawers and cupboards. If you haven’t used an item in the last month (unless it’s a holiday necessity) – purge it. Next up, clean and line drawer and shelf surfaces with a quality shelf liner, such as Easy Liner brand shelf liners by Duck brand. Not only will it protect them from dirt and grime, but it also offers a good 20 gauge: if you can’t see the shelf liner, it’s time to purge again.

2

Get a New Spin on the Laundry Room. Sometimes the laundry

room needs a bit of cleaning itself. Detergents and other build-up can cause washing machine odors. Run white vinegar through a cycle to sanitize it with ease.

Next, improve efficiency and reduce fire hazards by thoroughly cleaning lint from dryer vents, both inside and out. Finally, use labeled baskets to ensure everything has its place. And, since the laundry room is often a catch-all location, label one as a “put away” basket and be sure to empty it daily, putting its contents back in their proper places.

Control Bathroom Chaos. From towels to toiletries, bathrooms hold a lot of “stuff,” which can make organizing feel like a losing battle. Create a de-cluttering schedule. Since many toiletries, such as toothbrushes and makeup, should be replaced quarterly, this is the perfect time to purge. Empty drawers and linen cabinets and toss out items that are old or are not being used. Shelf liner can once again be a useful addition before putting items back, since products like Easy Liner brand products with Clorox antimicrobial protection can add an extra level of clean by helping prevent the growth of odor-causing mold and mildew on the liner. Plus, you can toss it in the wash for easy cleaning.

Gear-Up Garage Organization.

From toys to tools to seasonal gear, the garage has it all. Unfortunately, 25 percent of two-car garages are so cluttered that there isn’t room to park a car, reports the U.S. Department of Energy.

Annually, remove everything and categorize items into “keep,” “sell/donate,” and “trash” piles. Next, designate sections of the garage for “work” (hardware and gardening tools) and “play” (toys, bikes and balls). Create vertical storage by adding hooks and floor-to-ceiling shelves. Finally, label bins, boxes and shelves to encourage everyone to maintain the new-found organization.

Purr-fectly Clean Pets. Humans are not the only ones accumulating clutter or making messes. In fact, Trupanion.com discovered that the average number of pet toys in a home was 34. Start each season by tossing out tattered pet toys and thoroughly disinfecting the keepers – along with leashes, boxes and bedding. To keep areas neat and clean, place non-adhesive shelf liner under food and water bowls to keep them in place and spills contained. A piece under the litter box can also reduce litter scatter across floors and the grip surface helps pull litter from dirty paws.

By following these helpful tips and tricks, your home will soon be clean, organized and clutter-free. For more information on unique ways to use shelf liner in your home visit www.duckbrand.com.
