Historical Society turns 50

n 1965, a group oF local men and women interested in history and saving the old courthouse formed a new corporation. The official name was “White County Historical and Civic Improvement Membership Corporation” and allowed for supplemental organizations, such as “White County Historical Society,” to operate under its charter. A charter was drawn up and a board of directors was formed. And for 50 years, that organization has continued to thrive. The charter members of the board of directors were H.a. allison, clyde Dixon, Edgar Everhart, Ed Head, E.J. Huff, W.R. Jenkins, Verner London, Mrs. W.B. (Minnie) Lumsden, Arthur Sutton, Mrs. J.H. (Nell) Telford, and Mrs. C.E. (Addie) Wright. Edgar Everhart was the first president and served in that capacity for many years. He and his wife, Lillian, contributed numerous artifacts. Membership for several years was below 50. Today, there are 346 members,

both here in the county and throughout the United States. Other significant members who were instrumental in keeping the museum open and who worked diligently for the renovation were Betty Highsmith, Shirley McDonald, Ruth Hunt, Porter Glover, Mack Tucker, Daphne and Frank Majors, Ed Head, Dean Head, Fannie Mae Baker, Ann Banke, Gregory New and Grant Keene, to name a few. Dozens of volunteers have contributed time and energy and continue to do so. among its many projects for the past 50 years, the society has been responsible for getting several locations in the county placed on the National Register of Historic Places; sponsoring the “Pottery Comes to Town” event; adding state-recognized historic markers in the county; acquiring the historic Covered Bridge over Chickamauga Creek; requesting that the D.O.T. install signage entering the City of Cleveland for the Historic Museum; assisting Cleveland Cemetery trustees in the restoration and beautification of that historic site; accepting donation of a

bronze gold-miner statue on the museum lawn; and saving the old courthouse from demolition. With the blessings of the White County Board of Commissioners, a lease on the structure was given to the society for the purpose of preserving and recording of White County history. Restoration has taken place through large fundraisers and donations, and is an ongoing project for its many volunteers. A collection of history papers and rare antiques helps to complete the museum. Several members recently began to brainstorm, coming up with a list of changes that have occurred in our county, state and nation since the organization of the society in 1965. A few of those changes or innovations are: Computers; cell phones; two car (and more) families; moon landings; video games; big box and chain stores; vineyards and wineries; huge population increase in the county (from 6,000 to 27,500); fiber optics and natural gas lines; and much more. AVE yOU NOTICED HOW MANy THINGS are turning 50 this year? That big arch up in St. Louis is one. Cool Whip is another, along with Spaghetti-O’s and the Pillsbury Dough Boy. It’s also been 50 years since Subway opened its first sandwich shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut. A quick look at the calendar shows the year was 1965. A short mathematical calculation indicates that I was only 15 back then. The only foreign cars I’d seen yet were an Opel Kadett and a Volkswagen. The Honda Civic arrived a few years later. I remember it looked like a go-cart. Everybody laughed at it. The big thing here in White County 50 years ago, besides Arnold Dyer bagging that big turkey on Tray Mountain, was the brand-new Historical Society. The county was 106 years old then. I guess it took that long before anyone figured we had enough history to worry about. I have a theory that most people don’t get interested in history until they turn 50. I can’t prove or disprove this, but that’s what happened to me and, since it’s the only theory I’ve ever developed, I plan on sticking with it. Back in 1965, Mr. Edgar Everhart came to the high school and talked to our class about this new historical society. I didn’t pay much attention to what he said, though, because he was 6

talking history, and I hadn’t turned 50 yet. Things change, though, and these days I’m grateful to Mr. Everhart and the other forward-thinkers for forming this now 50-year-old organization. It’s had 50 great years, and I wish it another 50! as far as other things that turn the big Five-o in 2015, you can throw in The Sound of Music, Charlie Sheen and Brooke Shields. (Charlie’s real name is Carlos Irwin Estévez, by the way, but that’s another story.) In 1965, gasoline at the pump was a mere 31 cents per gallon and rent averaged $118 per month. We had just learned that smoking was bad for us. Gomer Pyle, Flipper and Gilligan’s Island were the big hits on TV. I had a crush on Elly May Clampett, and someplace way north of here, someone drank the first Diet Pepsi. It would be another 10 years before the last Japanese soldier, Hiroo Onoda, finally surrendered. Girls’ skirts were getting shorter, and men’s hair a bit longer. See how much fun history can be? By the way, the shortest war in history was fought between Zanzibar and England in 1896. The war lasted only 38 minutes before Zanzibar surrendered. History never gets old. I wish I could say the same for me. ■

ecky PeeBles has been painting since she was a child. after growing up in columbus Georgia, she went to Georgia state

University and earned a bachelor of visual arts degree in interior design. she remained in the atlanta area until her children graduated from college, then moved to sautee Nacoochee 13 years

ago. “I had family here and loved the area,” she said. That love works its way into her work, much of which reflects the beauty of White county. The painting she did for the 2015 Get the Scoop magazine was inspired by a photograph of her daughter and her husband. she placed their likenesses on a trail that, she says, is in her head. she loves walking along the trails and roads in the sautee area, and the trail is an amalgamation of some of her favorite places. This is Peebles’ second Scoop cover. her first was the 2010-2011 edition, and it was an historical scene of the Nacoochee Valley, with a sandy-colored Ga. 17 threading through it. Peebles taught school for the first five years she lived in White County. Now she teaches watercolor classes for all levels at the sautee Nacoochee center. she particularly enjoys watercolor because of the way it moves. “It’s active and has a personality,” she said. Most recently, she has been experimenting with the fairly new medium of alcohol ink. similar in movement to watercolor, she said she’s excited about the possibilities available with its vibrant colors. ■

At Family Connection, Judi Lawson helps people in need

UDI LAWSON’S CAREER ISN’T likely to make her rich or famous. But when people are struggling with difficult problems, she’s often able to guide them toward a brighter future. What could be better than that? lawson, 62, is executive director of White county’s Family connection, part of a statewide initiative that creates public-private partnerships to assist families in need. Every georgia county has a Family Connection, but each sets its own goals depending on the local circumstances. “Our two main goals are to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote school success,” Lawson said. “We do this primarily by linking organizations together. In White County, we’re working with 15 to 20 of them.” georgia Family connection started back in 1991 and draws funding from both state and federal sources. The White County initiative, which was formed about 17 years ago, has a paid staff of just two people: lawson, who has an upstairs office in the White

County Chamber of Commerce building, and Annette Boswell, the youth and family advocate, who works at the White County Board of Education. “The school system is our fiscal agent – they handle our accounting – and because of that, our focus is on school-age children,” Lawson said. “We work closely with the school counselors, and we help the kids with

school supplies, clothing, whatever the child needs to succeed.” One popular program is Backpack Buddies, aimed at students who often don’t have enough to eat at home. On the days they attend school, these kids get a nutritious breakfast and lunch. But on weekends, they may go hungry. So volunteers gather each week to fill backpacks with ready-to-serve food Partners at work

items, purchased from the northeast georgia Food Bank. There’s also an annual Christmas event to make sure that every low-income child receives gifts, such as toys, books and games. Family connection holds monthly meetings to collaborate with other White County agencies and nonprofits. The organization was also instrumental in helping to start the Community Thrift Store, which generates revenue for local charities. lawson began working with Family connection in 2001 as a family advocate, and became the director about a year later. It wasn’t the career she envisioned for herself when she was growing up in metro Atlanta. She earned a marketing degree at Georgia State University and worked for a number of years as a paralegal. In 1984, she married attorney and White County native Stan Lawson. They raised two children here: son John, who works at Freudenberg-noK, and daughter Katie, a student at the University of North Georgia. The Lawsons are active members of Concord Baptist Church in Clermont. They operate a small dairy farm on 34 acres off Lothridge Road. They also own farmland in Kentucky and western North Carolina. raising Jersey cows was a new experience for Judi lawson. “I grew up inside 285 (Atlanta’s interstate perimeter), so I was very much an urban kid,” she said. But she learned that even in a small, rural town, many people are facing tough problems. “I heard about Family connection through the newspaper,” Lawson said, recalling how she felt motivated to get involved. “My tender spot has always been for children and for older people.” When the recession hit in 2008, it devastated many families who were already living on the edge. “We’ve seen a lot of situational poverty – people who became destitute after a major event, such as an illness or the loss of a job,” lawson said. And though child neglect is a persistent issue, she said, “What I’ve found is that most parents really do want what’s best for their children.” It can be depressing to see people living in such dire circumstances, but it’s also encouraging to know that Family Connection can, in most cases, improve the situation. “My greatest satisfaction,” Lawson said, “is to see a family get turned around and succeed and no longer need help.” To learn more about Family connection in White county, call 706-865-3215. ■

Information you need to know about moving to White County • Automobile Tags/Registration New Georgia residents must obtain a Georgia license tag within 30 days of relocating. Required are either current registration, title, name and address of lien holder or copy of lease agreement, as well as proof of Georgia insurance. Georgia law requires that all auto tags be renewed within 30 days before the owner’s birthday. Tags expire at midnight on the birthday of the person listed first on the registration as owner. Owners of older cars also have to pay county ad valorem tax based on the assessed value of the vehicle. Cars purchased in georgia after March 1, 2013, are exempt from the annual “birthday” tax. Instead, the owner pays a one-timeonly title tax. For fast, convenient service, mail your 12

Satellite service is also available from DIRECTV, 855-678-2834, and Dish Network, 706-865-1956. • Driver’s License Information Within 30 days of moving to the state, newcomers are required to have a valid Georgia driver’s license. Those with a valid out-of-state license need only pass

an eye exam, while first-time drivers also must take a driving test and a written test. New federal rules require Georgia drivers to bring the following documents to verify their identity: birth certificate or passport; proof of Social Security number; two proofs of address (such as a utility bill or lease agreement); and proof of name change if needed (such as when the applicant has recently married). High-speed fiber-optic broadband is also available to some residents; call Habersham EMC to find out if you live within the service area. • Mobile Homes All mobile homes in Georgia must display a current mobile-home decal. The annual decals, which are provided upon payment of ad valorem taxes each year, may be obtained from the mobile home section of the White county Tax commissioner’s office at 113 North Brook Street (706-8652225). • Natural Gas For natural-gas service, you must go to the Georgia Public Service Commission website, www.psc.state.ga.us, and choose a marketer.

• Electricity Depending on where you live, your electricity will be provided by one of these two utilities. Georgia Power, 706-865-2424, located in Cleveland, serves most of Cleveland and Helen. Habersham Electric Membership Corp., 706-865-4362, also located in Cleveland, serves most of the unincorporated White County area. • Homestead Exemptions Each resident of White County is eligible for a $2,000 exemption on the property they own and occupy as their permanent residence on Jan. 1 of the taxable year. The $2,000 is deducted from the assessed (40 percent of the fair- market value) value of the property for state, county and school tax purposes. Seniors age 70 and above get a special taxbreak on school property taxes. application for homestead exemption can be made year-round; however, it must be made by april 1 of the tax year

Hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Materials accepted include corrugated cardboard, aluminum, tin cans, newsprint and magazines, and plastics #1 and #2. No glass.

Voters must present a driver’s license or other valid photo ID to document that they are a resident of the county. Where art meets architecture Bringing a little Tuscany to White County

hen Jerry and Gayle Murdock bought a lot in Innsbruck that bordered unicoi State Park, the next course of action was to settle on a design. “It started out to be a mountain house, but I thought, why don’t we build a little bit of Tuscany in the mountains?” Gayle said. an interior designer, artist and educator, Gayle was confident she could design the house. She said they’ve been to europe a number of times, especially Italy. The couple worked with duane holmes, of helen, to create the look of an Italian farmhouse. “We bought the property in 2003,” she said. “and we spent all of 2004 building the house.” The house offers a great place to display the couple’s artwork, much of which Gayle has painted herself. Inside the arched double doors, Turkish limestone tiles lead to a comfortable, open great room. The raised fireplace has cast-limestone sides and mantel, and the stucco chimney rises up through the second floor, where a gallery of windows bathes the room in light. The master suite occupies the second floor, along with a separate reading room and coffee bar. Jerry Murdock owned a food distribution business in Los Angeles, but moved to Destin, Florida, after selling his business. At Destin, he met several people who had homes in Helen. That eventually led Jerry and wife Gayle to build a second home in Helen. Here, he relaxes in their sunroom.

tradition. There are no crown moldings, just rustic baseboards. The sheetrock was finished with a “skip trowel” method, giving it a Mediterranean appearance. To fit the eight-foot doorways, doors were custom-made of solid pine or maple with an oak finish. Built-in cabinetry beside the fireplace and in the kitchen is finished in mahogany. The house has open beams in the ceiling, which add to the sound from the baby grand piano. a glassed-in sunroom runs the length of the house, with a wet bar, large dining table and another raised fireplace. It’s one of the Murdocks’ favorite rooms. “It got bigger as we went,” Gayle said. “We love to have lots of people over to enjoy it.” They can see Sal and yonah mountains from the master bedroom. The rear view looks out at Unicoi and toward Tray Mountain. The house is about 5,500 square feet. The guesthouse, built on an adjacent lot several years ago, is 2,500 square feet. Jerry designed a wine cellar in the basement and a pristine garage for his favorite sports cars. Above the bar in the tasting room is the head of a stuffed boar, sent to Jerry from his son. “He was a Tuscan truffle pig,” Jerry said. “They are not supposed to eat what they find. Poor fellow, he ate his last truffle and ended up on my wall.” Gayle’s paintings adorn the house, as well as those of other artists. oils and acrylics are her favor medium. “I just love it, because you get lost in your art and can spend the entire day painting,” she said. Jerry and Gayle are actively involved in the Helen Arts & Heritage Center. She teaches a few classes, and the couple is planning a fundraiser in the spring for the center. “We have lots of good, talented people here,” Gayle said. Many of the her paintings reflect scenes from their life in north Florida, where they live part-time, as well as the Chattahoochee River, the mountains and helen. Although they have traveled the world and lived in other states, Jerry and Gayle both have roots in Georgia, and they say Northeast Georgia is where they feel most at home. ■ 26

Turn right and travel 2.8 miles to the trailhead and parking area. Free.

Smith Creek Trail: 5 miles (10 miles round-trip) Take Ga. 75 north from Helen for 1 mile. Turn right on Ga. 356 and drive 1.5 miles. Then go left at the entrance to Unicoi State Park. Follow the signs to the Anna Ruby Falls parking area. Hike the short, paved trail to the falls. Smith Creek Trail begins at the right of the observation bridge. $3 per adult if you park at Anna Ruby visitor center; $5 per car if you park at Unicoi. Unicoi State Park Lake Trail: 2.5-mile, easy loop trail around Unicoi Lake. Off Ga. 356 just before Unicoi Lodge. $5 parking fee Yonah Mountain Trail: The trail goes three-fourths of the way up the side of Yonah Mountain to the U.S. Army’s helicopter drop zone.
