Faculty members work proactively with students to help them locate funding for their research, leading them through the fellowship and grant application process and navigating specific agency protocols and the mounds of paperwork required for national security clearance. Among the many initiatives supporting postdoctoral fellows are the National Research Council (NRC) Research Associateship Programs, which provide postdoctoral and senior research fellowships at more than 20 federal agencies. Many of the participating federal laboratories use the programs to
recruit potential new employees, bringing them in initially on two-year postdoctoral appointments. “Often graduate students are not aware of the opportunities for postdoctoral research in federal laboratories. The Research Associateship Programs help to make these connections,� says Ray Gamble, director of the fellowships office of the National Research Council. “Our programs are great vehicles for bringing the brightest researchers into the federal research system.
