EDITOR´S

Letter

It’s been an exciting and rather busy few months for us, here at the TC residence. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in full swing (bunting, flags and silly hats – check!) we have dedicated our photo shoot to all things British! Shot at Clevedon’s Victorian Mansion, Clevedon Hall and with clothing and accessories from The Mall, Cribbs Causeway. We also had a great shoot with Travel West promoting the healthy way to travel, whether you’re walking to school, commuting to work, travelling locally or walking for pleasure it can make you feel on top of your day. Whilst gaining EXCLUSIVE interviews with Amanda Wakeley & Oliver Tomalin, Creative Director to Love Brand & Co. We have been hard at work launching our first edition of Tres Chic WEDDINGS. We’ve given you a little taster of all that’s to come at the back of this edition. We have recommendations from Bobbi Brown for the perfect bridal makeup and expert tips from our in-house make-up artist Sally Bracey and with fashion always being paramount, Tres Chic WEDDINGS wouldn’t be without our Trend Alerts! We also add insight into what real brides really have to say about their ‘Big Day’. From all of us at TC.. Enjoy, and we’ll see you in the Autumn.

TROPICANA

“Club Tropicana, drinks are free, fun and sunshine - there’s enough for everyone. All that’s missing is the sea, but, don’t worry, you can sun-tan!” Whilst I’d like to take ownership of these lyrics we have WHAM to credit on that one, but the sentiment is the same. Fun, frivolity and a ‘joie de vivre’ in dress code. NB. You have to have a fitting destination to go tropicana, but if your high-street is your catwalk, who are we to judge! TC tip: Team a tropicana piece with a simple white vest and a bangle stack for the flavour of the coast, whatever your post code.

PASTEL PALETTE Candy cane, ice cream shades, and a smattering of sugared almonds; these seasons pastel shades are arguably the biggest trend of the SS12. Uber feminine and desperately wearable. Whether in a new shade of jean or topto-toe sugar, we are right behind this trend. Championed by Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim, anything that makes you good enough to eat is right by us.

TRIBAL & AZTEC Strong, graphic prints with warm, earthy tones and natural accents, safari looks are most synonymous with belted khaki jackets and a strong figure of a man in the desert, but this seasons Tribal prints are often strong and oversized enough to displace the need for the Man this summer. Tribal & Aztec looks often work best on simple shapes such as a shift dress or statement blouse and in soft, draped fabrics (cotton, linen and gauze). Set off with natural accents like an armful of wooden bangles, beaded cuff or even team with matte metallics to look a fierce part of the fash-tribe.

CABOT

fever

Fashionistas from Bristol and beyond headed to Cabot Circus this April for a series of free fashion shows presenting the hottest trends for Spring and Summer. It took place under the Cabot Circus glass roof on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April; the ‘Spring Summer 2012 Fashion Show’ featured the latest looks from the new collections available from stores in the centre. The Cabot Circus Fashion Show was presented by JP, one of London’s hottest stylists, who gave even the most fashion reluctant a nudge in the right direction to fulfill their style potential. And, with outfits from high-street to high-end, the catwalk showcased something for every budget and taste – whether you want to indulge your feminine side with pretty florals, grab attention with this seasons acid brights or spice it up a bit with the latest Miami trends. As the weekend of free fashion shows begins, savvy shoppers were able to enjoy some fantastic discounts and offers at many of Cabot Circus’ stores and restaurants. Visitors indulged in free treatments at the ‘pamper lounges’, where experts from House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, Sanctuary Spa, Seanhanna and the Body Shop were on hand to treat shoppers and talk through the latest hair and beauty trends.

12 TRES CHIC www.treschicmagazine.com

what we saw...

This spring/summer has seen an array of super style’s surface from pretty pastels to alter ego metallic’s. Cabot Circus has worked feverishly to bring these fabulous and futuristic styles to 11 catwalks over 2 days. With 5 shows daily, showcasing on the Cabot Circus stage were House of Fraser, Next, New Look, Monsoon, American Apparel to name but a few. Hosting ‘stylish nautical’ including sharp cut tee’s, chino’s and slender skirts, Chanel inspired work-wear and fields of floral fever through dresses with nipped in waist’s and A-line skirts mixed with peep toe shoes. We saw big names such as Harvey Nichols, French Connection, Reiss and Ted Baker showing plentiful pastels in shapes of denim hot pants, midi skirts and sheer tops, bold & bright, double dip prints and creative clashing. Be ready for plentiful wedges in colours of the rainbow. Our favourite sharp tailoring in wistful whites took centre stage and is set to be this summer’s key trend. To complement these fantastical show’s we saw Saturday’s finale finished with an adorable array of children’s wear from Harvey Nichols, brought to us by local award winning dance troupe Hype.

LOVE BRITAIN. LOVE BRAND. TC has had the privilege to meet with Oliver Tomalin, Creative Director of Love Brand & Co. a British luxury swimwear brand, for men and children. Love Brand & Co. keenly supports a problem or cause. Their debut collection, “Trunks for Trunks”, is state-of-the-art swimming trunks for the fashion conscious swimmer and boasts a “loving” charitable aspect to them too. As in the title itself, it is quite literary ‘Trunks for Trunks’, 5% of all the gross profits from the sell of the ‘trunks’ go to the Elephant Family Charity Organisation. Here we get to the roots of Oliver Tomalin and the passion for his creation….

This is truly a fabulous idea, one in which you should be immensely proud of….. When did you first come up with the idea behind the Love Brand & Co. label? My little idea is becoming a big reality. The idea for a socially responsible lifestyle label has been a dream of mine a long time. I didn’t know what it would be called or look like, but I was inspired every time I heard of a company that was giving to charity in a cool way and thought this is what I want to do, this is the future. I finally conceived Love Brand & Co in 2011. What made you decide on swimwear? I am passionate about swimwear. I would live in trunks if I could! I have always wanted to design my own. I essentially designed this collection for me. I like a stylish cut above the knee, comfort with the softest fabric possible and those little details that make you know something is really special. I have been developing designs for a number of ready-towear lines but I needed to launch with one. I chose our men’s swim collection ‘Trunks for Trunks’ (Swimming Trunks for endangered elephants)

13 TRES CHIC www.treschicmagazine.com

Tres Chic Feature

because it was the collection with the strongest, what I call, ‘product/problem association’. The double entendre is catchy. The elephant motif is also used in the Love Brand & Co logo and it seemed right to start by helping save the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild. What or who makes the decision for the chosen charity? It’s more the charity or cause that chooses us. At the moment we don’t have someone out there realizing unknown issues that need help. We are inspired by a charity and we work to associate it with a one of our lines and then try to help the cause through the sale of our products, generating awareness and funding through donations on the products profits. Who or what influences your designs? My design is simple, the fact they save elephants is what really makes them special. I want to produce classic ready-to-wear apparel that actually lasts, physically as well as hopefully staying in fashion! With timeless design that both allows us look good and that reminds us the cause the garment endeavors to support. These details may be playful and obvious or subtle. For example with the ‘Trunks for Trunks’ collection, the drawstring aglets are shaped like elephant tusks but not everybody knows the connecting part is stained red symbolic of the blood spilt by ivory poaching. Where do you go for inspiration? I always keep my eyes and ears open. I find my inspiration in the oddest places and times. The tube is a good one! You never know when you are going to see or hear something that makes you click. As the creative director, what are you key roles? When I started the project last year, I was on my own so my role was: do everything! Now we are a team of people, my role is developing the brand, with new designs and with new clients. Tell me a little about your background, how long have you worked in the creative industry? I come from an art and architectural background. I was art scholar at school and read Architecture at Uni. But like a few fashion designers before me, I find myself enjoying drawing from my architectural training in fashion. I learnt to use ‘economy of line,’ I was taught never to over engineer a building. So I like to focus my design on features that have function and have fun by thinking outside the box with these features, not by adding more.. What has been the most significant or creative part of your life so far? The most creative part so far was when I was studying architecture. It was at this time that I became more conceptual and starting thinking about ideas differently. My significant moments so far have to be the breakthroughs with Love Brand & Co. –I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when each one clicked. The name Love Brand came to me driving, the Trunks for Trunks concept on the beach and our slogan “Love feeling good” in the pub with my girlfriend, who still lays claim to being its creator! Do you have any advice for our budding designers? I am not sure it is befitting for me to give advice quite yet but I would have to say: go for it and stay focused. What have been your keys to success? Persistence. I try to never give up on something I believe in. I remember I was in the Bahamas when I was just starting I approached a beautiful boutique to stock my new brand. Although they loved it they were still reluctant to commit. I emailed them every month after that, with news and reiterating the reasons why Love Brand & Co. was the best, a whole year later, they finally placed an order. Please ‘name drop’ celebrities wearing your label right now? Love Brand & Co. is already popular with a few British celebrities from the ‘Made in Chelsea’ TV stars to Simon Cowell, Robert Pattinson and Prince William and Harry. 14 TRES CHIC www.treschicmagazine.com

This years’ swimwear is fantastic, a huge variety of styles and shapes coming through, with themes that include nautical, floral, polka dot and animal prints, all of which will fit in with your spring/summer wardrobe collection. We all love to look good and feel great on the beach, but if you get it wrong with your chosen bikini, you’ll spend the rest of your holidays wishing you looked like the lovely beach babe that got it so right. The secret to looking good is to be confident in your own body and to pick the right swimwear that is correct for your body shape. This is the time to enjoy the sun and not feel the need to cover up. My advice would be; go for good QUALITY, GOOD FITTING SWIMWEAR and take the time to pick the right style, like you do your underwear. An ill fitting bra is uncomfortable and not a pretty sight. This applies to swimwear too, you don’t want to wear pants that ride up, while taking that much deserved stroll along the beach or you bend over and fall out of your top! We all have different shaped bodies and we all come in different sizes so you need to decide what body shape you are and how best to show off your curves and flaunt that fabulous body this summer. Whatever your shape and size go out there and hit the beach in confidence and feel a million dollars. The use of colour can bring out your personality.

NEON

Vivienne Westwood

If the new season of day glow neon’s in shapes of bat winged cropped jackets and bandeau under garments gives you an eerie feeling of a 90’s revamp…. then fear not, you can still embrace this trend and bring it back into the 21st century by adding iridescent shades to your make-up just like the forerunner’s to this trend Martin Grant, Cacharel and Vivienne Westwood. For the perfect daytime accessory to the jazzy skinny’s affair of s/s12, keep the remainder of your make-up to a minimum. Think illuminated corals, pinks and ocean blues and this will take you swimmingly through 2012.

Whilst many of us do not posses the quirkiness and shear bravery for the pink hair, seen on the catwalks of Thakoni. You will be pleased to know these pretty pink shades were also captured on the lips too. Designers such as Nicole Fahri, Meadham Kirchhoff, Clement Ribeiro and D&G flocked the catwalks in this delightful colour. Think vibrant doses of watermelon or subtle shades of cotton candy. Be Nude

Makeup is one the best ways to emphasize the natural beauty of a woman. Being ‘nude’ has never been so sexy, with such a simplistic look, focus on giving the cheeks a pinch of colour. If you’re pale-skinned, rather warm up the face than over bronzing it!! Peach and pinkie bronzers work well, try MAC Blushcreme in Lilicent to have a high gloss finish. 39 TRES CHIC www.treschicmagazine.com

BB BEAUTIFUL

2012 has seen the rise of the BB cream. For those unaware of this fabulously futuristic product, the terminology BB simply means Blemish Balm or Blemish Base, which doesn't mean it's a spot cream. This Asian cult favourite is considered more of a multi-function cream that has coverage and skincare properties. It will give you a good base for makeup like a primer, even out complexion like a tinted moisturizer, cover minor imperfections and redness like a concealer, hydrate your skin like a day cream, whilst brightening and up-lifting a dull complexion. The BB creams promise healing, soothing and anti-ageing properties and some will even protect with SPF. Alex James on cheese

In the 1990’s, Alex James was best known for his role as bassist in hugely successful Britpop band Blur. Now he says he’s as likely to hear “Don’t I know you from somewhere? Ahh yes, you make cheese!”. By Sally Campbell Now a father of five, Alex bought his Oxfordshire farm whilst on honeymoon, saying at the time he thought it was a unique, romantic gesture, now he says “it’s got trendy and isn’t it just another thing old musicians do, buy a farm? Chef’s are the new rock stars!” Alex’s passion for cheese started in the 1970’s, when as a child he can clearly remember being taken to a party with his parents and tasting red leicester for the first time and ‘being blown away by it’. Like many of us at that time he didn’t know there was any cheese other than Cheddar. Fast forward to the 21st century and today Alex thinks Cheddar cheese is the best in the world, citing Somerset’s Montgomery’s and Keen’s as two of the best of the best. And

the best thing to drink with cheese? “Undoubtedly beer,” he says, “ you can’t get it wrong - bread, beer and Cheddar cheese, a winner everytime”. Alex has his own range of cheeses, sold in Asda. He says “the cheese world is intimidating, I wanted to produce delicious, affordable products that everyone can enjoy with their families. One day I mixed my kids three favourite cheeses and put them in the microwave to melt before pouring them on a jacket potato. I was inspired by a trip to France when I was about 16, the French serve jacket potatoes with melted cheese the result was amazing, addictive!”. From this Alex developed Spudsworth, a mix of three cheeses, one tasty, one acidic and one unctuous, sold in cubes which melt well in the microwave, but don’t lose flavour like grated cheese. Asked about advice for cheesemakers on dealing with buyers, Alex says “First of all you’ve got to have something they want, and to have a plan; know what you are doing with your brand and where you’re going with it. Don’t see the buyer as the enemy, work with them to build an ongoing relationship”. And on whether Blur will re-form more permanently after their Olympic Closing Concert in Hyde Park? “I’m not saying no, but it depends on which band member you ask on which day!” visit www.somersetfood.org for more info

Coer A La Creme With Nespero Honey Coulis You will need a set of heart shaped moulds, these usually have holes in the base to allow excess moisture to escape. Yogurt pots with holes in the bottom can be used as an alternative. Moulds are lined with muslin, cut squares slightly larger than the moulds and these can be made a day ahead, keep covered and refrigerated.

Ingredients 250g cream cheese 1tsp vanilla Essence 160g sour Cream 2tblsp caster sugar 2 tsp grated lemon rind 160g dbl whipped cream

Broad bean bruschetta with mozarella and basil Ingredients

500g fresh broad beans, podded (if out of season, frozen broad beans will do) 125g mozzarella, roughly torn 1tblsp olive oil 1tblsp lemon juice 10g fresh basil, shredded 10g fresh mint chopped 1 clove garlic 1 french stick Extra basil leaves and olive oil to serve

METHOD Cook broad beans in slightly salted boiling water 2/3 mins: until tender, drain well, refresh in cold water and drain again, slip each bean out of the grey skin into a bowl (approx, 300g). Lightly crush the beans with a fork, stir in the lemon juice, oil and herbs. Season to taste. Cut the bread 2.5cm thick diagonally, toast both sides in a hot griddle pan. Rub the toast with a garlic clove, scoop some of the broad bean mixture on top of each slice of toast, top with torn mozarella, garnish with basil, and drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

Pea And Prawn Lemon Risotto Ingredients (serves 6) 600g raw prawns in shells 4 tblsp olive oil 2 red chillies, de-seeded, half sliced and half finely chopped 2 ltr fish stock 1 lg onion chopped 400g risotto rice 2 small glasses of white wine 300g fresh or frozen peas 2 lemons, zest and juice METHOD Peel the prawns, reserve the head shells. Heat 1tblsp of olive oil in a sauce pan, fry the head shells with the sliced chilli until toasted and coloured. Pour the stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer. Take another sauce pan and sweat the onions in 1 tblsp of oil until transparent, stir in the rice, turn over to coat all the grains, stirring until the rice starts to look transparent, pour in the wine and simmer until its all evaporated, now add the strained stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring until absorbed. Continue adding the stock over a low heat until the rice is nearly cooked, add the prawns and peas with the last ladleful, by the time the prawns have changed colour the rice should be al dente (a bit of bit left in the middle-not a crunch) the texture should be creamy and slightly soupy, if a spoon is drawn through it, the mark left disappears after a moment or two. The rice cooking process should take 25/30mins. Turn off the heat and stir in the chopped chilli, remaining oil and lemon juice. Cover and leave to rest for the flavours and creaminess to develop. To serve, give a final stir and serve in bowls topped with lemon zest.
