JANUARY Many things come together in this shot, Matt’s calm style in the barrel, the reflections on the wave, the way Matt seems to fit perfectly into the wave and the thing I like the most, the way the sun is kissing the lip. Surfer : Matt Mohagen

Matt Pagan

January was a fickle month. Most of the month we had waves under head high which forced us to become more creative. This was a small day in El Porto. I told Matt to aim for me and spin out the tail right towards my head (probably not the wisest thing to tell a guy who could pull it off ).

FREE

Timmy Reyes is one of my favorite surfers to watch. He knows hows to utilize his stocky frame to not only boost amazingly high but also get a good rotation while up there.

CAREFREE

I met Anna Ehrgott over the summer. She was surfing Malibu with a carefree style. I saw her again in January at El Porto. Water was much colder but she still had that same big smile, happy to be riding no matter what size it was. I follow Anna on instagram and see that she lives life like she surfs, carefree and happy.

Matt Mohagegen Matt is always in the water, either above the surface when there are waves or below the surface fishing and free diving when it’s flat. Matt came up for this session in January

Enjoy The View

This spot rarely gets good, but it turned on for a few days in January. Easton Jones, right place right time.

Shapers Bay

When Tyler isn’t at the shop hand crafting custom boards, he’s pulling into barrels. He is one of the most committed big wave chargers in the South Bay.

Steve Howe

January 29th was Steve Howe’s day. He was in the right spot all morning, getting stand up barrels and coming out with the spit. “I didn’t want to smile or claim anything. I didn’t want to ruin my luck”

Head Hunting

I attemted to get a different angle by shooting with my wide angle on a small day, getting right under Matt Pagan as his aired out. It almost cost me my housing (and his board) on this one.

Waiting Patiently

Andy Prunauer is one of the quietest guys in the line up. I think he studies the ocean, looking for the next gem. It paid off for him here, dropping into the biggest wave of the day.

LAND

Different angles, styles and shapes make the South Bay great. Seems like the wave changes every 100 yards.

January Rain

Some of the best days in January for surf were accompanied with rain... not good for shooting. This day was good, but the next day (probably the best day of the winter)brought rain all day.

Jalian Johnston Jalian is the most underrated surfer in the South Bay. The guy rips. He stays to himself, never surfing where the “crowd is. If I get there after he has already paddled out I have no problem finding him. Look for the guy boosting

So close to the ocean that you can smell it.

Respect. Pat Webber is the most respected guy in this lineup for a reason.

FEBRUARY

February brought us some the best swells of the winter. We still haven’t had that “BIG” day yet, but we saw a few great days. Cheyne Magnusson setting a line

Heavy

Daniel Del Castillo had a chance to straighten out to saftey but he chose to charge it and I’m thankful he did.

What The F...

When Marcelo lined up this inside section he knew what the end results would be. It reminds me of a quote from the movie Risky Business “Sometimes you gotta say “What the Fxxk”, make your move. Joel, every now and then, saying “What the Fxxk”, brings freedom. Freedom brings opportunity, opportunity makes your future”

Boring Beauty

I love this shot. Not much going on, Steve Howe is getting ready to make a move. I like the wave and how calm everything looks. I love how the lip looks merging out over the face. Simple but amazing

Wrong Place

I really wish that I would have been a little farther inside. I had gotten caught inside on the previous set and took a decent beating. When this set came through I found that I swam too far out . By the time I swung around it was too late to do anything about it.

WAVES

This is one of the most beautiful waves I’ve ever shot.

Unridden

Some of the best waves I see go unridden. It’s called “down the beach syndrome”
