From the Director’s Desk‌

Hello Encinitas,

I hope everyone is having a nice holiday season. Staff has been busy coordinating new classes for residents to enjoy. Some of these classes include: Yoga 4 Kids, Family Yoga, Embracing Essential Oils and a Luminary Workshop. The department is also busy working on the Standard Pacific Park Site, Trail 82 along Rancho Santa Fe Road, and Trail 95 along El Camino Del Norte. We are also planning to install new playground equipment at Moonlight Beach Park. We look forward to bringing these wonderful new facilities to our residents. The department offers amazing events, classes, programs, concerts, art exhibits and so much more. We have beautiful parks, beaches and trails for you to enjoy as well. This year try a new program or take a hike on a trail. There is so much exploring to be done in Encinitas.

JUNE - SEPTEMBER

Gray whales feast on the food-filled arctic waters through the summer months to gain back 16 to 30 percent of ther total body weight.

WINTER MONTHS Make For GREAT WHALE WATCHING The winter months are prime. So in this issue, we’re sharing inside scoop for you to enjoy both! Here’s a map showing Gray Whale migration from Alaska to the warm waters of Baja Sur, Mexico.

OCTOBER

Encinitas is home to some of the best whale watching spots along the San Diego coastline.

FALL MIGRATION: As nothern

waters begin to freeze, gray whales head to Mexico's warm water for the winter.

Gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) migrate south each year from Alaska to Baja Sur, Mexico from October to February. Gray whales, both males and females, head south to the warm waters of San Ignacio Lagoon, Ojo de Liebre and Magdalena Bay to mate, have their babies and nurse their young to a size that affords them strength for the journey back to Alaska. Traveling in groups called pods, some of these giants swim 12,430 miles round-trip. In April, the journey back northward to Alaska begins.

NOVEMBER

Gray whales swim 24 hours a day for over 5,000 miles to reach the warm lagoons of Mexico.

Most gray whales migrate within 2.5 miles of the West Coast, making whale watching from the tall overlook areas in Encinitas possible. APRIL - MAY

SPRING MIGRATION: Most adults gray whales begin to migrate north in April. Mothers and newborns will be the last to leave the lagoons.

WINTER IS GREAT FOR TIDEPOOL VIEWING TOO!

Tidepools are great to explore in the winter when tides are extreme. To catch the best low tides, you’ll need to time your visit to the beach. Here’s a handy link to check the tides before planning your tidepool visits: www.TidesandCurrents.NOAA.gov. Swamis has theCultural best tidepool reef, as INfo at ENCINITASCA.GOV/ARTS Arts it's a marine protected area and teeming with life.
