Notes from the Editor DEADLINE CHANGES - Please note we are altering our deadlines for the rest of the year so they happen on a Friday rather than a Monday. The new deadlines are -

As reported in Grange Now, the decision was taken in February of this year to withdraw the subsidies which have previously been provided to commercial operators in order to support a number of scheduled bus services across the County, and the X6 evening service is one of those subsidised routes. The County Council currently subsidises the 1855; 2025; 2155 Barrow to Kendal and the 2015; 2145; 2315 Kendal to Barrow, and the current operator has indicated that once the subsidies are withdrawn it is unlikely that they will continue to operate these routes. Therefore, the last scheduled

More care is needed when going on the sands

With 27 incidents in nearly as many weeks, Bay Search and Rescue are urging people to take more care before venturing out onto the sands. by trying to rescue his son but instead called the coastguard. Luckily, fire crews were minutes away trying out two new ‘inflatable walkways’ for situations exactly like this one. The team quickly found the teen in a notorious area for quicksand, around 50 metres from the shore. They used the inflatable walk-ways to get to the boy and set up a stable platform for firefighters to use as they worked to free him. The team used sand lances and the water supply from one of the fire engines to soften the mud.

On July 1st, Liverpool Coastguard contacted Bay Search and Rescue to locate a couple cut off by the tide on the sands near Humphrey Head. Mike Davis, Bay Search and Rescue’s Training Officer told Grange now, “on arrival at the scene Bay’s Hagglund All Terrain Rescue Vehicle quickly located the couple and returned them safely to the shore” and added, “today’s rescue shows the importance of checking the tide times before venturing onto the coast, luckily today’s tide was a fairly low one and the couple have been safely recovered to the shore”.

This was the third incident in four days with the team being called on to rescue a large animal in Morecambe on June 28th and they were also called as back up when a teenage boy, who was fishing with his father became trapped to his waist in quicksand.

In this instance firefighters happened to be training nearby and they managed to rescue the 13 year old boy. The boy’s father knew not to endanger himself

On this occasion the boy was very lucky as the tide was well out which meant rescue services had time on their side otherwise this story could have had a very different ending. Lancashire Fire Service spokesman John Taylor recently said: “The sands of Morecambe Bay shift over the years and the shore off Silverdale has changed dramatically. “Thirty years ago much of the shoreline was grass or marsh but about ten years ago the river came right in to the shore, scouring away the areas where it was safe to walk. Now there are many areas of soft quicksand close to the shore.” With the school holidays and the great weather Bay Search and Rescue know that the likelihood of the above incidents happening again are a big possibility and Mike Davis added, “I cannot stress enough the importance of checking out the area and tide times before setting out on the sands. They can be incredibly dangerous.”

“All that was left was a band of gold”

so when he called me to say he had found it I couldn’t believe it.

But it wasn’t until he was at home later in the evening that he realised the ring was missing.

“The ring means everything to me and I am so grateful to Josh and Cumbria Waste Group for all their help – they definitely went above and beyond the call of duty.”

Mr Taylor said: “My first thought was that it had fallen off while I was washing up so I looked in the sink and down the plughole but didn’t see anything.

Josh said: “I have looked for car keys that people have mistakenly thrown away in the past but this was my first time looking for something as small as a wedding ring.

“I then looked down the back of the sofa but when it wasn’t there either, I then knew that it must have fallen off when I was doing my recycling.”

David Taylor managed to recycle a little more than he intended to when he lost his wedding ring in a recycling skip. But the 65-year-old was reunited with his precious ring thanks to the efforts of Cumbria Waste Group

skip driver Josh Waite. The ring, which Mr Taylor has worn since marrying his wife Janet in 1969, slipped from his finger as he put plastic into a recycling skip in Berners Close car park in Grange over Sands.

Consultation begins on £1.4m South Cumbria homes proposal

Mr Taylor, who lives in Kents Bank, then contacted Cumbria Waste Group, which is responsible for collecting, emptying and recycling the contents of the skips. He was then put in touch with Josh, who was due to pick up the skip.

“Luckily, Mr Taylor was able to tell me where about in the skip he was doing the recycling, so before I started searching I had a good idea of where I was likely to find it.

Mr Taylor added: “Unfortunately this happened over a bank holiday weekend so the skip was fuller than usual but Josh said he would take it back to the depot and sort through the contents. “I thought it would be a painstaking search and like looking for a needle in the haystack

“It was then a case of unloading the recycling onto the floor and looking through it piece by piece. I was around a third of way through when I noticed the ring and I was delighted because I knew how much it meant to Mr Taylor.”

A trip down memory lane

Cartmel Grange Nursing Home took a trip down Memory Lane last month to celebrate their 100th birthday. Staff were resplendent in period costume for the special Edwardian themed party which reflected the era when the first foundation stone was laid.

RESIDENTS were given their first chance to view plans for 11 new affordable homes in Cartmel off Haggs Lane near Pit farm. Affordable housing provider Home Group unveiled plans for a £1.4m development when their plans went on display in Cartmel Village Hall on Tuesday July 8.

Home Group hopes to build four one bedroom flats, four two-bedroom houses and three three-bedroom houses on land at Pit Farm. The consultation event is being held ahead of a planning application due to be submitted to South Lakeland District Council. It is anticipated that all the homes will have a local occupancy clause attached to them meaning they will only be available to people who live or work in the area. GADAG’s view is that, though it is eminently sensible and desirable in its own right as a potential development of muchneeded affordable homes, it lies outside the agreed Land Development Framework for the entire SLDC area. If one development is allowed to go ahead outside the plan surely others can follow which means (in GADAG’s view) that much of the Planning Inspector’s views on soundness are at risk of being sidestepped.

Grange Mayor, Tricia Thomas, along with Queen’s Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson, got the party started with an opening ceremony which included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The celebration continued throughout the day and was thoroughly enjoyed by staff, residents and guests including Tim Farron and his family.

Above: Commemorative Plaque unveiling

Entertainment included a performance by the youngsters from local dance troupe Dance Attik and music from Jeremy Jay and the Old Contemptibles Brass Band and the Furness Clog Dancers.

Another super senior in the area, has to be Clifford Dadson who first featured in the June edition of Grange Now.

Freda has lived in the town for 30 years after moving here from Yorkshire. As a young woman she worked in a mill as a warper and worked during the war in air raid precautions. We can all but hope that we are as fit and energetic as Freda when we get to her age. Perhaps the secret of her

than this no CGT is payable. For gains above the annual allowance the CGT payable is 18% for a basic rate taxpayer, this increases to 28% for higher and additional rate tax payers. Whilst this is lower than income tax there are ways of avoiding or at least minimising the amount of CGT payable.

One of the simplest ways to avoid future CGT is using a ‘tax shelter’ such as an ISA or Pension; these do however come with annual funding limits so it is something that needs to be considered each tax year.

Avoiding CGT is perfectly legitimate; with careful and structured planning this can be achieved on a year by year basis, the following are some simple steps that can be taken:

Defer selling – If you know or expect your income to fall in the future (retirement perhaps), delaying the sale of the asset, or even selling in stages may reduce the tax you pay. Transfer investments to

longevity is her sunny, cheerful disposition. I spent nearly an hour with Freda and she smiled throughout.

Also 94, Mr Dadson has completed two Open University degrees since turning 93, and not one who is content to rest on his laurels, Mr Dadson now intends to to do a tandem parachute jump at Cark Airfield on 13th September when, he tells us, he’ll be 95. Grange Now will certainly be there to photograph the event. May we take this opportunity to apologise to Mr Dadson as we made a typographical error in the June issue, stating he was born in 1939 when it obviously should have read, ‘born in London in 1919.’

your spouse or registered civil partner – investments can be transferred between spouses and registered civil partners without creating a tax charge; allowing the use of 2 CGT allowances.

Always record your losses – The loss must be recorded on your tax return; the time limit for claiming the loss is four years from the end of the tax year, these can then be offset against future gains.

Saving tax is something that we all want to achieve where possible; many people miss out on annual allowances because they are unaware of them or are unsure of how best to set up their finances in the most tax efficient way. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Inter-school athletics competition sees another successful year Ian Nicol, Headteacher at Leven Valley Primary School was behind the first inter-school athletics competition in 2012. Inspired by the country’s enthusiasm for the London games, Ian decided he wanted all local primary school children to be a part of it. Many months of preparation went into the event which saw 6 local schools come together to take part. Allithwaite Primary, Cartmel Primary, Flookburgh Primary, Grange Primary, Leven Valley Primary and Lindale Primary all had teams in the various events which was hosted by Cartmel Priory School. Pupils from the secondary school aided by Head of PE, Mr Coulston and Sally Hill School Sports Coordinator, put on a fantastic event, which even included an opening ceremony with each school, complete with banner, parading the field. Many parents attending

on the day said they are really pleased that this has become an annual event and all credit to Ian Nicol for setting it up in the first place. A number of local primary schools have in recent years held, ‘non-competitive’ sports days which some parents agree with but others are vehemently against it saying, “sport is meant to be competitive and should be played as such”.

Overall winners on the day were Grange Primary School with Lindale in second and Leven Valley coming third and Allithwaite in fourth. Well done to all who took part.

Allithwaite playground back in full swing Thanks to a huge community effort, the playground looks set to be in full swing in time for the summer holidays following a very memorable and successful walk across Morecambe Bay on Sunday, 8th June. The challenging trek took place to raise the £2000 needed to replace the old basket swing which was crushed by a fallen tree in the February storms. The safari across the sands saw a mix of young and old, walking and wading the 8 miles across the Bay to Kents Bank led by Queen’s Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson, MBE. They hope that the new swing will be in place by early August, and they hope to have a “Grand Opening” at their BBQ in the park event on Saturday, 13th September. For those who enjoyed wanging a welly last year, the afternoon will see the return of the Wacky Races!! Allithwaite Community Centre will also be

holding their annual Autumn Show, so don’t delay and pop along to Allithwaite Post Office for the full schedule! The playground committee would like to send a massive thank you to all the amazing walkers and supporters of the fundraising mission. Special thanks go to Lower Allithwaite Parish Council, Willow Water, Grange Co-operative Food, The Lantern, Allithwaite School Dinner Ladies and PTA for their brilliant support. Rheumatoid arthritis affects many joints in your feet. Gout most commonly affects your big toe joint. It causes severe inflammation and makes your joint red, hot and swollen during an attack, which typically lasts one to two weeks. Without treatment, repeated attacks can cause permanent damage to your joint and lead to osteoarthritis. However, gout can usually be well controlled with medications.

On Saturday the Scouts set off in two groups to follow the Cumbria Way to Keswick. After a few detours both arrived in time to catch the ice cream shop before closing. The journey back to the hostel on an open topped bus was one of the highlights of the trip with overhanging tree branches ensuring that everyone’s hair was ‘combed’ at least once over the weekend! Sunday’s activities were much less energetic as tired legs took their toll but they still managed a hike along the river.

The trip was made affordable thanks to a grant from the Cartmel Youth Club Fund.

Beaver & Cub Camp in Cartmel Thirty Cubs from Grange and Cartmel braved the deluge of the first Friday in July to start their camp. The evening’s activities were held indoors but despite the continuing rain all those on site chose to sleep in the tents. The Cubs frightened away the rain and Saturday was

a stunning day for the Cubs to enjoy rafting and canoeing at Castle Head Field Studies Centre. The Beavers joined the camp after lunch on Saturday and built dens in the woods. In the evening both Beavers and Cubs enjoyed a traditional camp fire.

Despite the fears of a wet Sunday the weather was good and joint teams of Beaver and Cubs tackled a number of challenges including ‘The Minefield’, crossing a stream with a hen and a fox and building an ‘Awful Tower’. Everyone was so relieved to be able to pack away dry tents.

August 2014 marks the Centenary of the start of the First World War. Many families were affected when their loved ones went to fight in the Great War. In recognition of this, in the week beginning 11th August we will be holding computer sessions to help you trace your family’s military using Ancestry, Find My Past and other relevant websites. Book your session at the Library or phone 32479. There is still plenty of time for primary school children to start and complete the Summer Reading Challenge as the final day to return books is not until 13th September. We also have a Magical Mythical Japan workshop from 2 to 3 pm on Thursday 5th August. This is a FREE event organised by the Wordsworth Trust for families with children aged between 5 and 12 to have a go at haiku and create a Japanese scroll to take home. Booking is essential by either visiting the Library or phoning 32749.

Pre-school children don’t have to miss out, they can join the Bookstart Bear Club. They receive a folder with their own bookmark, rhymes and puppet and then stamp their card with a paw print on each visit to the Library and receive a different Certificate every 6th visit.

We have a range of recycling boxes in the Library porch which benefit a range of charities. You can drop off your old Spectacles (Vision Aid Overseas); Wool (Friends of Mother Theresa); Mobile Phones (Flookburgh Recreational Charity) or Stamps (St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston). We now have a new box to collect old Wellingtons. These will be going to a Donkey Sanctuary at Leeds.

A service of commemoration marking the 100th anniversary, to the day, of the start of the First World War is to be held at St Annes Church, Haverthwaite on Monday 4th August at 6.30pm followed at 7.30pm by re-dedication of the Haverthwaite war memorial. Reunited with our wedding ring

Grange now travels

In the July issue of Grange Now, our Lost and Found section, contained details of a wedding ring which had been lost. The ring belonged to a lady called Diane and her husband Mark placed the announcement, as they were obviously devastated by its loss.

Colin and Dorothy Milner celebrate 40 years of marriage

Congratulations to Colin and Dorothy Milner, as they celebrate their Ruby Wedding Anniversary this July.

Diane said, “I was absolutely delighted when we got Darren’s email. Getting my ring back has made my year.”

Formerly headmaster and class teacher at Grange Primary School, they have lived in the town for almost 25 years. Beloved by all the family, especially their four grandchildren, Jack, William, Isobel and baby Annabel, who wish them good health and every happiness in the years to come.

Darren continued the story saying, “Diane came round on 13th July, and when I saw her on the step, I asked where her husband was, and she told me he was parking the car and I said we would have

Happily, Lindale plumber Darren Taylor, found the ring on the forecourt of Greystones Petrol Station. Darren told Grange Now, “I didn’t want to just hand it in to the garage as the person who had lost it possibly wouldn’t know they had lost it there, so I took it home with me”, Darren continued, “I went to the Lindale Inn for a pint and was reading Grange Now when I spotted the notice about the ring and the description matched the ring I had found. Ian (Mayor), the Landlord, offered to email Mark for me. Diane rang me back and described the ring to me and she was in floods of tears when I said I had it. They arranged to come round to my house to pick it up.”

Mayor’s Report Tim’s Column I think on balance that July has been a good month. We had the great news from that the plans to hand over Westmorland General Hospital to some organisation outside the NHS had been abandoned. Following on from this we heard that the Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group have made the provision of radiotherapy treatment at the hospital a key part of the five year plan that they have submitted to NHS England for approval. Given that this is the group who would ultimately be responsible for the use of the unit and that the funding would come from their budgets this is a major step forward. There would have to be a significant reason why NHS England would not support their plans. Another campaign that shows every sign of being successful is that to keep the National Grid from building big new power lines through the Lake District. With the plans to build a new power station near Sellafield and all of the power being generated by the wind farms in the Irish Sea there is a need for new power lines to take the electricity to the rest of the country. As I wrote in Grange Now a few years ago, one of the plans was to build the lines through the park and along the A590 which would have had quite a big impact on the environment. However, the latest announcement from the National Grid is that they are focusing their efforts on a plan that would take some of the electricity North towards Carlisle and some South towards Barrow but then run the cables under Morecambe Bay, which may even result in some of the pylons by the road being removed. This seems to me to be a sensible approach but they will be consulting on it this autumn if you want to know more about the issues. Finally, we learned that Cumbria County Council is receiving an additional £4.8 million to maintain our roads. About a quarter of this is going towards projects on routes that cover the whole of Cumbria but of the remaining money a quarter is heading towards South Lakeland to help maintain our roads here. So if you know of any roads that are deserving of some of this money then please do get in touch. At the end of August I will be conducting my own consultation when I do my tenth Summer Tour around the constituency. We are coming to the Cartmel Peninsula on the 26th August, visiting Grange, Allithwaite, Flookburgh and Cark during the day. Please do come along, the aim of these visits is simply to find out what people are thinking about issues so the more opinions I hear the better. You can find out exactly where we will be and when on my website. If you cannot wait until then then please feel free to contact me at Acland House, Smokehouse Yard, Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4ND or tim@timfarron.co.uk. Thanks for your support, Tim

This month Jackie and I have been really rather busy and actually spent a fair time eating! We began with a Garden Party to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Cartmel Grange. Cedric was the star of this event, cutting the ribbon for the grand opening as well as unveiling a beautiful memorial plaque. There we were lucky enough to have a guided tour of the amazing ‘pink palace’. What a place that must have been for ordinary working men to come for convalescence with its panelled rooms and stained glass, not to mention the roof-top winter garden of the original design. Another Garden Party followed, this time to celebrate 25 years of Ministry by Reverend Nick Ashe, held in the delightful Rectory garden. Strawberries and cream and the amazing views

made this a day to remember. Then followed the Mayor’s Tea party where a very small thank you in the form of a delicious tea was given to many of the town’s volunteers. This event seems totally inadequate as a way of thanking the volunteers for all the time and effort they put in to make our town the amazing place it is, but I hope they all enjoyed it as much as I did. And last, but by no means least, I was very pleased to attend a lunch with members of the Bloom Group and the Cumbria in Bloom Judges. Looking around the town, had I been one of these judges, I would have awarded a gold to Grange for every possible category! By the time you read this I hope that a project to enhance the outside of the derelict Lido building on the prom will be very near to fruition. Councillor Greenway and I have been attempting to turn the façade of the building into

an outdoor photo gallery. We plan to mount laminated photos of Grange, old and new, onto each of the boarded up windows and doors on the front of the building. With this end in mind we have been seeking sponsors for each window and door space and as I write this we are well on the way to achieving our goal. Once we have enough sponsors, photos freely donated from several sources will be enlarged and laminated onto very thin sheets to be attached to the existing boarding in the same way as the weatherproof and vandal proof artwork at the station. As the Lido building is unlikely to see any major changes in the near future, this project should visually improve what can only be described as the town’s eyesore until a decision is made about what to do with the structure. Tricia Thomas, Civic Mayor

New look for the Lido

Junior PCSO’s invite local residents to get involved Last month Grange now reported on a new scheme which has allowed Year 5 and 6 pupils from local schools to become Junior Police Community Support Officers. The children who applied to join are from Grange, Cartmel and Flookburgh Primary Schools and each have been given a uniform and a workbook to complete. One of their first tasks is a litter pick, an Environmental event in conjunction with SLDC on Thursday 7th August from 10-12noon - at Flookburgh CE School. The litter pick will take place in Ravenstown. If you can’t make that event why not support them on Monday 18th August 10am-12noon at a Crime Prevention and

Bicycle Marking Surgery at Kents Bank Road car park This is an open surgery for all residents and visitors alike to attend. The Junior PCSOs will be conducting crime prevention surveys and giving advice and they will also be security marking any bicycles that are brought along. A list of activities that the Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be conducting with their Junior PCSOs is viewable online at www. cumbria.police.co.uk/ juniorpcso.

County Matters As the County Councillor representing High and Low Newton I would like the local community to come together to support the Village hall. Newton in Cartmel Village Hall is located in High Newton and is seeking both new committee members and groups wishing to use the hall. Many of you may not already be aware but the hall has undergone a period of refurbishment; the venue is spacious, light, with good access and ample parking and most importantly warm!

The current committee are inviting you to come along and join us on Tuesday 9th September at 7pm. The meeting is open to all and you will have the opportunity to view all the hard work which has been done so far and also find out how you can support this vital community asset. There are no commitments or obligations just come along and find out more. In the meantime, if you are interested in hiring the hall please contact Kay on either 015395 31250 or kayflet@ aol.com

An innovative plan to improve the look of the Lido has been launched by Town Mayor Tricia Thomas and Councillor Joanna Greenway. Twenty two panels will be put up to create ‘a gallery of wonderful views.’ The panels are being sponsored by local businesses and societies with the majority already taken. Who knows what will happen to the Lido long term but at least in the near future it will look much better.

If your group or business want to find out more, email Tricia and Joanna at council@grangeoversands.net

Campaign to Stop On-Street Car Parking Charges.

On Thursday 17th July Lib Dem members of the County Council Local Committee for South Lakeland voted to bring in parking charges on the streets of our local towns(Initially Ambleside,Bowness and Kendal). This was despite huge opposition from residents, Conservative Councillors, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Dr Ann Myatt and our local MP. We may have lost the first battle here in South Lakeland but the war goes on! The vote by County Councillors was recorded so readers are able to see how their local Councillor voted on this issue.

On the same day the Conservative Councillors threw out on-street parking charges in Allerdale (Keswick Town) so we can still work to stop meters arriving on the streets of our market towns across Cumbria. Is it not time that locally elected Lib Dem Councillors listened to the views of their residents, not the orders of their Labour Masters in County Hall? The Campaign goes on to stop this highways stealth tax and with your

support we can defeat it.National Grid is to start a major consultation exercise in September to seek the views of people in Cumbria and Lancashire on plans to connect new sources of electricity generation into the national electricity network. In advance of the consultation we need to build public awareness and understanding about the Project, and encourage individuals to visit the website www. northwestcoastconnections.com to register your interest and receive information about the consultation and details of how you can get involved. As you may be aware Central Government has allocated extra funding to Local Authorities to help with highways repairs following on from the severe weather we encountered last winter. I am glad to report that the County Council has received over four million pounds from this fund and that South Lakeland’s share is around one million pounds. THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our latest newsletter, great weather meant we had plenty of fun and excitement as we geared up for our Strawberry Fete at the start of July. April

April started with a visit from professional Singer Yvonne Patterson, who wowed all the residents. Andy, our activities organiser, had the residents hard at work over the month making Easter banners, bunting, cards and lanterns as well as very delicious cakes and sweets. We filled the Old Vicarage with flower decorations, and had lots of fun making Easter bonnets.

May

June June saw glorious weather, Andrew began his arts and crafts plan for our Strawberry Fete in April resulting in the residents sitting but really got cracking in May, with out in the garden frequently. They the residents hard at work creating didn’t slacken off at all though preparing for the fete, continuing amazing giant flowers made of to make the tissue flowers and tissue paper and banners to string banners and plant seedlings to up for the Fete. sell on the plant stall. They also made paper mache balloons and windmills. We had another visit from Whoopsie Do, a beautiful St. Bernard who lives in Cartmel.

We celebrated Easter Sunday with a special meal and Easter eggs for all. Alongside Easter decorations the residents also made banners for St. George’s day and we had a traditional English meal to go with it. The month ended with a visit from local musician Jean Marks, who plays the accordion magnificently. The residents thoroughly enjoyed her visit and looked forward to her returning.

The gardeners outdid themselves as the hundreds of daffodils exploded into life in our gardens. It was stunning.

Hard at work making Strawberry Fete decorations

They also made other crafts such as the photo displays which the residents change each month, decorate plant pots, and plant flowers and seeds to grow. The results are spread around The Old Vicarage, inside and out.

Judith Poole brought some extremely talented young musicians to play for us in the middle of May and Jean Marks returned on the 21st to play her accordion and inspire the residents. For those who wanted more relaxing activities Margaret Chapman continued with her regular music to movement sessions and quizzes and providing soothing hand massages for all who wanted them. Our weekly Tai Chi from Simon continued as well. There was still time for our choir to come every Thursday afternoon. The good weather enabled us to get out more and Andrew took residents out to Grange, to the Ornamental Pond and for afternoon and tea and shopping.

Andrew and Marjorie with Whoopsie Do. Tragically with no brandy.

In the middle of the month Judith Poole returned with a retinue of musically gifted children. In a reprieve from the hard Fete work, the residents made dream catchers and hung them in the conservatory.

Forthcoming Events What’s coming up over the next few months? August 11th Visit by Origami Artist August 30th Lamberts Pet Store Visit Outings to Holker Hall & Levens Hall, Windermere Lake, a picnic in the park and a barbeque at the Old Vicarage

Sun shines on the Old Vicarage Strawberry Fete

The Friday before the event the weather was ominously grey and wet. It didn’t look good...

And then it all came together, although without the help of the Grange & District Lions it wouldn’t have happened. The weather was great, the band – the Alan Beecham Trio were magnificient. The new local bakery, Fat Flour came and sold their bread and

John the baker, even brought his adorable newborn daughter. Margaret Chapman manned the strawberries and scones stall and we had stalls for plants, cakes, a raffle, tombola, ice cream stall, home made Pimms and childrens stalls with hook a duck and lucky dip. Andrew put up his banners and the flowers the residents had made and they gave away the windmills to local children. We caught up with friends and family we hadn’t seen for a while and sat out in the sun as relaxing jazz music filled the air. A big thank you to all volunteers and staff who helped out and the many people who donated prizes. We raised 530 pounds - half of this will go to the Grange Lions to give to charity and the rest for The Old Vicarage Residents Fund.

Clarence celebrates 100 years

On the 23rd June, Clarence Bratherton celebrated his 100th birthday with friends and family who came from far and wide to celebrate his life. Messages were sent from his time at the Royal Liverpool Choral Society and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society and of course a telegram from the Queen.

The Old Vicarage has a few vacancies, if you would like to come and look around or want some information please ring on 015395 33703.

Local MP says ‘Have Your Say’ by August 18th to stop rail deterioration The future wellbeing of the local area rests on a steady flow of tourism feeding into our many small businesses. The Furness Line is under threat and local residents have until August 18th to try and prevent it. That was the message at a meeting between Tim Farron, local MP, Peter Robinson of the Furness Line Community Rail Partnership and Grange & District Chamber of Trade. The threat comes from a move by the Department of Transport to return the Furness Line between Barrow and Lancaster to a single operator. This would remove TransPennine from the route leaving the entire operation to Northern. This means that all travellers to and from Preston, Manchester and the airport would have to change onto possibly crowded trains, at Lancaster. The impact for tourism, commuters and locals could be serious. The meeting heard that a complete move to Northern as the single operator could mean older rolling stock, less carriages, poor station facilities and lack of passenger facilities

and access for wheelchairs, prams, bikes etc. In an ideal situation the massive expansion of Sellafield, BAE Systems and Glaxo would translate to investment in full electrification and through lines to Preston, Manchester and beyond. Electrification however is much cheaper and easier for the Department for Transport to achieve on the Windermere branch line so it’s an easier ‘tick in the box’. For the Furness Line what could happen is a downgrading of the line and your help is needed to try and prevent this from happening. It is important to protect the tourist traffic that helps underpin the local economy. For commuters too and local residents generally, there is a need to make your voice heard. The local area is facing 700+ new homes and a deteriorating traffic situation. Local resident Mrs. Gordon who runs Somerset House Bed and Breakfast stated at the meeting “We are a tourist area and ironically it was the railway that put Grange on the map all those years ago.” That train service now needs your help.

Peter, Robinson, Tim Farron & Tricia Thomas

The proposals emerge from the government’s consultation on the re-letting of the franchises for the operation of our local rail services, TransPennine Express and Northern, with the

possibility of new operators coming in from February 2016. Although our local MPs, the Community Rail Partnership, FLAG, the County Council and others, are making a strong case against these proposals, their case is made much stronger if concerns are also expressed directly by local individuals and users of the railway. Maybe even, you have been put off using the trains because of the poor timetable, have missed your connecting service, have difficulty changing trains with luggage, can’t get to work on time, have had to stand in a crowded train - and more. The more support the better - all such views give valuable support to the local case for better services on the line - and keeping our through trains to Manchester and the Airport.. How to Have Your Say by August 18th Please write a letter - even a couple of short paragraphs would do - expressing your concerns to the Department for Transport. Eight out of fourteen HDC staff are from Cartmel Priory School HOME DELIVERY CARPETS

Carpets, Vinyls & Rugs 015395 34061 www.homedeliverycarpets.com Kendal, Grange-over-Sands, Barrow-in-Furness, Ambleside

Set up in 2002 by David & Wendy Burrows and their oldest son James, Home Delivery Carpets believe the quality of their workmanship, their approach to in-house apprenticeship, training and being a close-knit family run business is what has kept them going when other businesses in the carpet trade have experienced a downturn. James Burrows joined directly after his GCSEs and younger son Matthew Burrows soon followed as well. Home Delivery Carpets started out with an outlet at the Kendal Indoor Market (where you can still find them). A few years later they

added their premises in Albert Road in Grange - as Grange is their home town.

Each of their four outlets has a team of two fitters and one or more sales staff - 14 staff in all. Home Delivery Carpets find that one of their strengths stems from their in-house training for all their fitters. Their fitters have an average of 12 months of basic apprenticeship to master the domestic fittings. After that they move on to commercial flooring. Both James and Matthew are proud to have gone to Cartmel Priory School and in all, eight members of their staff went to the School! For Home Delivery Carpets, employing and training young people from the Cartmel peninsula is clearly a winning formula. Perhaps just as important is their focus on teamwork.

Shearing Shed

Jenny of The Shearing Shed offered Arran (pictured above) the position of apprentice barber just before Christmas. There are not many male barbers these days and it is something that Arran has a passion for.

The day to day work involves meeting, greeting, making coffee and tea, sweeping the floor, learning about health and safety, watching haircuts and generally supporting in the salon. The main requirements are to be keen and willing to learn, and to have an eye for the job.

The client is always the focus when in ‘the chair’ but to make things run smoothly team work is essential to support each other. The tutor comes in to assess Arran and to comment on his progress.

Grange Town Council recently met with SLDC Councillor Giles Archibold to discuss parking issues in the town and learnt that SLDC have introduced transferable tickets for their car parks. Basically if you buy say a 3 hour ticket to use in an SLDC car park in Grange and then go to Kendal you can use any un-used time in an SLDC car park there – as long as they have the same charging rates. For Grange residents and visitors it means you can buy say an hour’s parking in Kents Bank Road car park, shop on Kents Bank Road and then nip down to Main Street or Windermere Road car parks to visit the shops there.

Allithwaite and Cartmel WI It was a full house in July for the last meeting before a summer break. The business part was dealt with as quickly as possible and then members and visitors settled down for an hour’s entertainment with Tony Berry from the Houghton Weavers. His anecdotes and songs were enjoyed by all. Many members had known the group since their television shows in the late 1970s but for a few, the wonderful Lancashire humour was a new experience. An afternoon tea provided by the committee rounded off the afternoon. The next meeting is on Tuesday September 2nd when Frank Jordan will speak on his ‘Memoirs of a Tennis Umpire’. As usual this will be at 2.00pm at Allithwaite Community Centre. New members are always welcome, contact Wendy Graham (secretary) 015395 32702.

Witherslack WI Sixteen members had enjoyed an evening walk round Staveley with Andy Lowe. Plans were made for the meal at the party in September. Sarah Bradley and Tilly van Rees reported on their visit to Denman College with the County Federation. The course they chose was looking round private gardens. The organisation was excellent and everyone came home happy despite delays on the motorway. They recommend the college highly. The speaker Eileen Belshaw entertained us with Part 2 of “ It shouldn`t happen to a nurse”..Her husband was

away at sea for months at a time so she moved house from Liverpool to Cumbria to take up a new job without being able to tell him! Her tales of some of her patients and their families were hilarious. Village life, where there are no secrets, sometimes surprised her when her work was meant to be confidential. No meeting in August but a visit to Holehird and Rydal Hall. September: 90th Anniversary party!

Grange Soroptimists At the Club meeting on 1st July the club had a most interesting talk from Cath Holland and her friend Domtilla from Kenya. Domtilla gave a moving account of how she avoided FGM. It was good to hear of the success of their work providing an Alternative rite of Passage for girls and thus dramatically reducing the practice of FGM. Chris Butler, club member presented Cath and Domtilla with another 200 handmade bracelets for the ceremonies. At the time of going to press club members were looking forward to the outing to Dunham Massey at the end of July. Grange WI Members had a real treat at their last meeting. Marilyn Hale demonstrated encaustic art – an exciting way of making pictures with special wax materials and an iron. It was the best use of an iron in a long time! A small group of members went to the open air promenade theatre in Williamson Park at Lancaster and enjoyed a performance of Hansel and Gretel. At the next meeting on 28 August Chris Wilcock will talk about the charity WaterAid. New members are very welcome. Please contact Joanne Harvey on 015395 32932.

Cartmel Art Society What a wonderful summer we are having. Our members have enjoyed three glorious outdoor painting sessions at Fell Foot Park, Cartmel and Holehird Gardens. The Society is now looking forward to welcoming friends and visitors to our popular Annual Exhibition to be held in the Village Hall from Tuesday 12 August – Saturday 16th August, 10.00am – 6.00pm daily. All paintings are realistically priced and cover watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastels and graphite. In addition there will be the ever popular small cards, mounted unframed pictures and some art books for sale. There will be an opportunity to vote for your favourite picture and we shall be raffling a painting, the proceeds of which will go to a local charity. Something for everyone. So do please come along and support us. Admission is £1 which includes refreshments. Credit card facilities will be available. Newton & Field Broughton WI At the July meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI, members voted on the proposal to send two members from our ‘Link Group’ to the WI Centenary AGM in the Royal Albert Hall.

The visit to Old Hall Farm, Bouth, in June, had been enjoyed by 24 members. Five members had joined the Federation visit to Denman College. They had taken part in cookery classes or visited gardens and discussed garden design with their tutor. The speaker for the evening was Kendal Town Crier, Richard Matthews, gave us an extremely interesting, illustrated talk on the history of Town Criers. Historians date the use of Town Criers to1066 although it is accepted that Criers could have been used before that to announce wars etc.Richard brought with him the beautiful lace Jabot and Cuffs that the Lakeland Lace Makers had made and presented to him last month. We will have our usual produce stall at the Cartmel Show on August 6th.The next meeting is on September 10th in Lindale Village Hall at 7.30pm.Members are reminded not to arrive before 7.25pm due to another class using the hall before our meeting.

Grange over Sands Lifeboats The Grange over Sands Branch of the Lifeboats held their annual Flag Day on Saturday 12th July. The dry, warm weather brought many people into town, who very kindly donated £526.60 to the R.N.L.I. The previous week’s House to House collection raised £1363.16 for the Charity. Very grateful thanks to all our collectors and the generous people of Grange for their continued support for the Lifeboats.

Grange Ramblers Monday 16th June10 members met at a earlier start of 9.30 to miss the high tides at Bardsea shoreline, along the shoreline a coffee break at Aldingham in full sun, we then set off along the sands, bypassing the rocks near Moat Farm, joining the land at Newbiggin. Passed Gleason Park farm then crossed heavy dew meadows. Lunch at the Gleaston Mill Café with homemade cake. Crossing the top pastures with great views across the Bay, more uncut meadows, over six foot high, we had another break at Scales children’s play area. Next stop Sunbrick and Bardsea. It appears the track was underused, some mud and plenty of overgrown hedgerows almost like Jungle trekking. Leader – Alan Heaton. 25th June 10 walkers set off from Elter water through the quarries and over into Little Langdale, where we turned up the old quarry track and eventually arrived at summit of Lingmoor where lunch was taken with view of Langdale Pikes, we then descended to Lingmoor Tarn then squeezed through “fat man agony” up to Side Pike, returned along Langdale valley and finishing at Wainwright Pub in Chapel Stile. The 8 miles 1700ft assent strenuous walk was led by Ian Conway.

Grange Lions Grange Lions would like to thank the following sponsors of our very successful annual

schools football competition last month: Jim Latham Bookmaker, Cockles convenience store, Trevor Smith Camp Road Garage, Flookburgh Chemist, Flookburgh Post Office. An evening picnic in Cartmel Park was enjoyed by Lions and FOGL’s where Helen Khan handed over her Presidency for this last twelve months to Peter Clough for the coming year. Unfortunately rain stopped play early but not before good food and a few games...Grange Lions like to be informal and a little bit different! At our July meeting, plans were finalised for a street collection in Grange Over Sands on Saturday 26th July. All monies collected will go to Kidsafe. This is a charity providing support and information to schools and other organisations in the local area. They provide support for children and teenagers enabling them to stay safe in their everyday lives.

Grange Drama Last month’s production of Anton Chekhov’s One Act plays went well despite the change of location to the Methodist Church Hall. The change of venue presented us with a challenge or two. Actor/Director, Don Scott, and cast rose to the occasion as audiences laughed and smiled at these Russian comedies. Our thanks for their support, to all behind the scenes and front of house who helped get the show on the road and to those businesses in Grange who kindly donated raffle prizes in aid of St Mary’s Hospice. Further readings are planned monthly and a full programme / diary will be displayed on notice boards at Grange Library, Tourist Information Centre at Victoria Hall, the Institute or you can look up latest details on our website: www.grangedrama.org.uk.

This year’s summer extravaganza was held in Flookburgh and comprised a picture trail and quiz around the town followed by ‘classic English Tea in the village hall. gave an illustrated talk on the building of Devils Bridge. He showed that there were similarities in construction with the Roman Pont du Garde in France. He then explained how wooden beams were attached to the pillars to facilitate the construction of a wooden arch upon which the stone arch was built. The stonework still shows 61 different masons marks. The earliest written mention of the bridge was in the time of Elizabeth 1 where it is referred to as Kirkby bridge. The name Devils Bridge was coined several hundred years later. PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. We have been busy of late as we try to meet the demand of local people for our services. The recent Bardy Crewdson retrospective raised over £4,000 in May and the Radcliffe family’s fundraiser in Arnside during July raised over £1,000! We are hugely grateful to these generous people. All funds raised will go to support our counselling, befriending and drop in services. In other news: our Board of Trustees is looking for a Treasurer, plus two more general Trustees to join the board. Our trustees make decisions about the charity collectively, working as a team which meets once a month. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. You will be making a difference to your local community by directing a dedicated staff team and a raft of excellent volunteers to support vulnerable adults across the South Lakes. You will help SLM to achieve its aims and there are numerous opportunities to learn new skills in this role. Contact the Kendal Office for an application form or for more information. Pupils and club leaders from all six winning schools were invited for afternoon tea with Bishop Robert

and members of staff from the Diocesan Board of Education at the Fratry, Carlisle Cathedral. The awards recognise ongoing work in the development of Christian clubs in the schools to help create closer working ties with churches. Allithwaite C of E Primary received their Award for ‘a strong local team running

the termly messy church after school club which links with a popular weekly school afternoon celebration’, while Leven Valley C of E Primary provide ‘a new termly afternoon and after school club with strong support from local church community and good visible club presence within school’ and finally Lindale C of E Primary ‘offer a popular puppet club reaching 1/3 of school, links well with school themes and has input into assemblies and church worship.’ The Bishop of Penrith, the Rt Revd Robert Freeman said: “We’re delighted to build on the success of last year’s launch of these awards and all six schools are worthy recipients of praise “It’s a fantastic demonstration of the work that is ongoing in our Cumbrian communities to bring the

light of Christ to our youngsters. ”In terms of fresh expression of church and community outreach their work also links in wonderfully with our Diocesan Vision of growing disciples.” Each school will give a presentation on the work they’ve completed to develop Christian clubs. Michael Mill, Director of Education said: “We were aware of some really innovative work between churches and schools and wanted a way of recognising good practice and encouraging others to realise what might be possible in their communities.” Application forms for the 2015 award will be available from the Diocesan website from September 2014. Any innovative church and school partnership is welcome to apply.

The first Sunday in July shone clear and bright yet again; and what a relief it was to all those involved in the, now annual, Ice Cream Sunday. A variety of activities for both children and adults had been planned in the Priory grounds for after our monthly Family Service – with lots of ice cream, of course! burgers, quiche, sausages and sticky toffee pudding, not to mention a glass of beer, punch or soft drink. Thank you to everyone who lent a hand, whether on Saturday afternoon, during the day on Sunday or even Monday. It was a great day and we look forward to Ice Cream Sunday 2015.

Blast Furness once again created a wonderful atmosphere with their punchy, rhythmic music and colourful costumes. The generosity of local traders combined with fund raising events of both The Priory and the community ensured everyone could enjoy lunch from a selection of

Grange United Reformed Church

St Paul’s, Grange

In late May we welcomed Roger Jones, the Christian composer, his wife Mary and their team from Christian Music Ministries and a small band of musicians to lead us in worship.

The recent weeks have been extremely busy at St Paul’s, among the many events that took place were the twenty-fifth anniversary celebrations for Canon Nick Ash, our Team Rector, with the garden party at the Rectory and the special service in church.

Roger and his team were leading a music ministry week at Abbott Hall and were teaching one of Roger’s compositions ‘Apostles’ to the many holiday makers there, who also joined us to share in such a joyous service. The church was full and what a wonderful sound we all made. On July 13th, we had our Group Anniversary Service at Sedbergh URC. It was good to get-together with the other congregations in the South Lakes group for worship, followed by a lovely sociable lunch. Please remember our Traveller’s Tales on Thursday evenings at 7.45pm, a chance to hear about people’s experiences around the world.

The garden party was a joyous occasion with over 130 guests working their way through 32 punnets of strawberries and gallons of cream. The lunchtime concert was also a great success, commencing with a delicious lunch prepared and served by our catering team. This was followed by Charles Edmondson who thoroughly entertained us with a selection of keyboard classics on the piano and organ. We look forward to our autumn lunchtime concert when we will be delighted to welcome back David Edmonds on the flute, who is returning by popular demand after the extraordinary success of his concert for us last September, more details on this next month. St Paul’s Parochial Church Council members, together with clergy and members of other denominations, were invited to a meeting with the Cartmel Peninsular Team Ministry Council. The evening was hosted and catered for by the Rev Rob Jackson and volunteers from St

Mary’s Church, Allithwaite, who provided us all with a wonderful meal prior to a presentation by the clergy concerning the implications for the future of the church in our area, how we will be affected by fewer numbers of clergy and the progress of our ecumenical partnership in the Growing Together initiative, which is three churches (Anglican, Methodist & United Reformed) journeying as one for God’s kingdom in Cumbria. During the evening there was an opportunity for groups from the different churches to share their experiences and ideas for future growth in view of the challenges that lie ahead. It was a very informative evening and it was good to share fellowship with our friends from around the district. On 3rd August, the centenary of the start of World War I will be commemorated by prayers at 8 am at St Paul’s and 9.30 am at the Fell Church and all are very welcome to attend these services.

Cartmel Methodist Church

St. Charles

The last couple of months have been a sad time for Cartmel Chapel. By the time you read this our minister for the last 10 years and his family will have left us, ‘for pastures new’, and we wish them all the very best in their future home.

Costa del Grange! – Hasn’t the weather been great. Thanks be to God. Along with a parishioner, I experienced another interesting ‘Cor et Lumen Christi’ spiritual programme. They are certainly very committed people.

We held our church anniversary in June and Joe was the preacher. The service was followed by lunch prepared by Heather and we were able to show appreciation of them both with suitable presents. We then had a shock when one of our longest serving members, Alf Dawson, decided it was time to move nearer to his daughter in Rawtenstall. In both cases they will be missed but we are looking forward to the arrival of our new minister in September. We would be delighted to see you at either our services at 11am on Sunday morning or at our monthly coffee mornings on the last Saturday of each month.

In memory of Bettie Renton On March 17, 1945, Elizabeth “Bettie” Pixton, Grange-overSands, married James Renton, a Canadian soldier, in St. Paul’s Church.

They moved to Brantford, Ontario, Canada, where they raised three children (Michael, Derryk, and Leslie), and were grandparents of five grandchildren. Jim passed away in 1990, and Bettie passed away in September, 2013.

In memory of their life together and their meeting in Grange-overSands, Bettie’s family will bury a portion of their ashes in the grave of Bettie’s mother in St. Peter’s cemetery, Field Broughton, September 14th , 2014.

Two more marriage preparations for nonGrange couples gives one hope – Church weddings are not as yet things of the past. A very pleasant afternoon was spent at Rev Nick Ash’s silver jubilee of priesting. Strawberries, ice cream and a nice glass of wine always go down well on a Wednesday afternoon! Mr Chris Robson, speaking on behalf of ‘Aid to the Church in Need’ gave a very succinct and interesting insight into the work of the Charity and the frightening position of Christians in North Nigeria, China, North Korea, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan. We should daily thank the Lord for our good fortune – their problem today – ours tomorrow? The danger of complacency! Talks on use of St Cuthbert’s are ongoing – as usual – slowly! However, with the aid of Deacon Joe, 95% of St Cuthbert’s has now been cleared. The work on the new store continues – slowly needless to say! Builders Although personally I find no humour in gardening, I must confess I have a good laugh each time I pass the splayed wellingtoned “legs” in the garden up the path next to the Co-op! Enjoy a holiday and travel safely. God Bless. Fr P.

What do Normandy and the Cartmel Peninsula have in common? Agneau de Pré Salé of course! That’s Salt Marsh Lamb if you were wondering. A meat so fineflavoured and tender that it has long been recognised as a delicacy in France, gracing the menus of the finest Parisian restaurants. Yet, here it is on our doorstep! The practice of grazing sheep on salt marshes has a very long history with the earliest written record dating back to the mid-13th century, however it is not until relatively recently that this speciality has been recognised and sold as “Salt Marsh Lamb”. In the mild climate of the Cartmel Peninsula, local farmers turn their lambs out on these coastal pastures in spring to graze on the salty, nutrient-rich forage. The grasses and herbs they eat are never sown as a crop, but are wild (species include puccinellia, sea lavender and marsh samphire) and are untreated with agricultural chemicals. You only have to taste the meat to notice the contribution of their diet – far from tasting salty, the flavour is light and sweet. Available from award winning local Butchers, Higginsons of Grange, the meat is finished locally keeping the food miles of this precious cargo to a minimum – barely two miles from shore to door in fact! Whole and Half Lambs, as well as full range of cuts are available at the shop.

Grange Art Society Annual Exhibition The Exhibition, which took place in June at the Victoria Hall, was a fantastic success. This year the Society invited members of the Communication Group of the Barrow branch of The Stroke Association to exhibit. All the paintings from this group were by survivors of strokes who have communication difficulties as well as some mobility problems. All the stroke survivors have had to relearn motor skills with their non dominant hand. Maggie Turbitt, a stroke survivor, instigated painting at the stroke group following her enjoyment and sense of achievement she felt after going on a painting course using the Bob Ross technique. She has raised £2000 by selling her paintings and uses this money to pay for painting lessons for other stroke survivors. We hope that by seeing these paintings in an exhibition, other stroke survivors are motivated to find a hobby that gives them

a sense of achievement and enjoyment. Pat, a former Grange and District Art Society member opened the exhibition. She told how she was inspired to paint by members of the society, particularly Mary Andrew. She thought that this year’s exhibition was extremely good and thought it an excellent idea to invite both Grange Primary School and the Stroke Association. She praised the quality of the exhibition and was honoured to open it.

Prom Art

Visitors to Prom Art on June 29th were treated to an amazing, ‘fireeating’ show. It was the first time Michael Naylor had performed at the event but will now be a regular at future shows. He wowed the crowds not only with his ‘fire-eating’ routine but also a fantastic ‘Poi’ juggling display. Poi involves swinging tethered weights through a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns which apparently originated with the Māori people of New Zealand. Well worth a look.

Pyro-amusment by Michael Naylor and some Van Gogh inspired artwork by Grange Primary

Grange Primary School also attended the event and their display of Sunflowers made everyone smile.

Interested in Family Planning?

Following on from their recent success with Anton Chekhov’s The Bear and The proposal, Grange Drama are continuing with the comedy theme and are planning a reading of Frank Vickery’s very funny comedy, Family Planning. Nicola Quinn, with her previous experience of this play, is looking for two young actors, in their late teens to 20’s to play two of the seven readers needed for this play, as well as the more mature actors to play the other parts including a hypochondriac and a hilarious ‘gran’ character - in total a cast of seven readers.

Grange Drama invite anyone who would like to “have a go” to ring 07712 333387 for more information. Alternatively, just go along and read part, just listen in and have a chat over a cuppa. Grange Institute, Tuesday August 19th at 7.30 pm.

We’ve been to see the Wizard

Grange Youth Theatre put on a fantastic show with their version of The Wizard of Oz. The show’s leading lady Lucia Harrington had to pull out 3 weeks before curtain up after shattering her knee cap whilst fell walking. Molly Cowley, her understudy, took on the role and played the role brilliantly. Amy Shepherd who played the hairbrained scarecrow and Murray Adams as the cowardly lion were exceptionally funny and the ‘heartless’ tin man ably played by Chloe Owens completed the trio.

The cast skipped and sang their way to the Wizard (Simon McCleery), aided by excellent sound effects and lighting. It was a first for Cartmel Priory School student, James Tunnadine, who helped devise and operate the lights, alongside Bob Somerset.

Following the production there a showcase of talent with young Max Burrows taking to the stage alone with his keyboard, James Owen who performed his ‘worm dance’ which just grew and grew by the second performance! Lucia, in cast, took to the stage on Saturday afternoon with her guitar to sing following a great performance by Grace Heap, in the same slot on Friday night. Local dance school, the Elite School of Dance, were outstanding with seniors and juniors performing a medley of modern dance which started in the audience as a flash mob. The seniors then took to the stage alone to perform a contemporary ballet dance to Robert Miles’ ‘Children’. Maddy Davis and Olivia Dobson were great as the narrators but the undisputed stars of the show were, ‘Little Ant and Dec’ aka Harry Burrow and Noah Carter.

School Reports

Cartmel Priory School

Along with teams across the South Lakes & Furness, 7 of our Year 9 students recently took part in an industrial cadet programme with the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) and Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK).

The aim of the programme was to increase students understanding of how scientists contribute to business and enterprise and to be aware of how student studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) can equip them for success in a wide range of careers in the science and engineering industries. In addition, the programme developed their own personal skills as scientists and researchers.

Each team was given a brief of ‘Your Healthy School’ and the challenge was to think about the school environment, recommending solutions to make the school a healthier place for everyone. Cartmel Priory School students considered a number of issues relating to school, including healthy eating, exercise

Allithwaite Primary School

The summer term has drawn to a close with a very busy last few weeks. Our younger pupils in Reception and Years 1 and 2 have been studying mini beasts and to celebrate the end of the topic they held a fancy dress ugly bug ball. They enjoyed making bug biscuits, making bugs using clay and tessellating hexagons. Each pupil has made their own mini beast book using the computer and these have been emailed to their delighted parents.

Our Year 3 and 4 pupils have been studying the Romans and had a grand finale with a Roman Day in school. All the pupils dressed up in togas, made and enjoyed honey and spice cakes and took part in an archaeological dig. They all took part in a wonderful music concert playing a range of instruments including trumpets, baritones and cornets. Years 5 and 6 were also involved in the music concert playing guitars, flutes violins and keyboards in front of an audience of friends, parents and governors. The older pupils worked hard to put the finishing touches to the school production of Oliver which played to a full house on three occasions with amazing performances from the main characters.

The team of 4 pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 worked very hard in the Cartmel Peninsula Times Tables Challenge and came away with first prize, closely followed by Leven Valley Primary School. The older pupils have been busy helping some of the more mature

members of the community how to use a tablet and also visited some local residents in their home in Grange by request to help with their IT skills. All of the training was very well received by the adults. Our Parent and Toddler group goes from strength to strength meeting in the Mary Lambert Hall every Monday morning. The children are offered a wide range of toys and activities and parents are encouraged to join in. Our exciting Nursery is due to start in September and we are looking forward to welcoming the younger children to our school. We will be offering an After School Club from September and take up of places is very encouraging. A group including pupils, governors, parents and staff enjoyed a visit to Carlisle Cathedral where they received the Bishop’s Award after giving a presentation to the Bishop and diocesan colleagues. On the Thursday before end of term we held an awards assembly where many pupils received recognition for successes and achievements in a wide range of activities. These included writing, mathematics, science, creative contribution, Eco club, Forest schools, sport and music. An audience of parents, governors and friends shared the celebration.

Allithwaite School and LLoyds Bank working together to teach IT skills

Allithwaite school successful secured money from the Lloyds Bank Community Fund following a local competition earlier in the year. The funding they received enabled them to purchase new tablets to support the teaching of Information Technology. In order to strengthen links with the local community the pupils have been acting as tutors and showing the older generation how to use a tablet. The first cohort of 8 adults including 3 past pupils from the school who attended in the late 1940s and 1950s,

were very successful in learning about the Internet, sending emails and shopping online. By special demand a second group of 6 adults are currently working with 6 pupils to extend the project further. On completion of the course the adults receive a certificate. The school has also done some outreach work with a group of residents in a residential community in Grange.

and recycling, but in the end the students chose to investigate ‘How the learning environment affects mental health’ for their project.

The project was in four stages 1. Research and Ideas, 2. Interviews and Data collection, 3. Development and Recommendations and 4. Produce a written report and a Display Stand for the Celebration and Assessment Day.

Our team of Lucia H, Izzie W, Saskia R, Molly S, Jake M, Isaac H, and James M adopted the company name of ‘Next Step’. They were mentored by apprentice, Anna Shaw of GSK, who was there to provide support and encouragement.

After 10 weeks of hard work, both in and out of school, including visits to other schools and

factories, interviews and surveys of both staff and students, experiments and research using the Internet and other sources, the students were able to produce an amazing report of mental health in schools. This report was presented at GSK on the Celebration and Assessment Day, held on 10 July 2014. Along with the other teams, Cartmel’s was assessed on Best overall Project, Most Innovative Project and Best Team effort. As a result of the depth of work and the high quality of the students’ performance, the Cartmel team was awarded The Pupil Prize Cup and £15 of I-tune vouchers each. They also received a Certificate of Graduation - well done to all of them, a brilliant effort from everyone involved.

Cartmel Primary School pupils design stained glass window The window was designed by the children and includes sheep, birds, a river, rainbow and the Priory itself; it was made by Stonegate Glass Studio of Low Bentham.

On Monday July 14th July, pupils, teachers and governors attended the unveiling of a large stained glass cross which is now the centrepiece of the school’s new dining hall window which faces the main road.

The cost of design and making has been supported by Cartmel Village Society, Cartmel Priory PCC and individual donations. At the special assembly, to which parents, priory members and villagers were also invited, the window was blessed by Revd. Nick Devenish. A spokesperson for the school told Grange Now, “It was especially good to have the window installed before the end of term, giving the Year 6 children, who have been such a part of the 18 month project, an opportunity to join in the celebrations.”

Cartmel Peninsula Primary Schools Consortium Times Tables Challenge Final

On Thursday 29 June at Grange Fell Golf Club 6 teams of 4 pupils fought out the Final of the Times Tables Challenge Quiz. The pupils aged from 7-11 years from Allithwaite, Cartmel, Grange, Flookburgh, Leven Valley and Lindale Primary Schools were challenged about their knowledge of their times tables and their application. The Final was sponsored by Furness Building Society, Hadwins Motor Group, Higginson Butchers, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Company and Playdale. The winning school scoring 106 points out of a possible 120 was Allithwaite receiving a school prize of £100 of maths resources with each pupil receiving a £20 voucher and a certificate.

Second placed was Leven Valley winning £75 of resources and a £15 voucher for each pupil with Grange placed third and receiving £50 of resources and a £10 voucher for each pupil. Pupils in the remaining teams each received a calculator and a certificate. The independent marker, Cathy Styles and the timer Chris Chew ensured the smooth running of the exciting Final. All the prizes were presented by Ian Quayle, Partnerships and Affinities Manager of Furness Building Society in the presence of 60 parents, supporters and governors.

Dear Editor We were off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz, in June at Victoria Hall. Our wonderful Grange Youth Theatre group have done it again, they have provided our community with the most lively, energetic and professional performance this side of the Yellow Brick Road. We were treated to the most entertaining show, with lots of audience participation, thanks to an almost full house on the Friday night. The first was the very colourful story of the Wizard of Oz and every character including Dorothy’s cute, wellbehaved dog, were fantastic. The second half of the show we were entertained by the most brilliant soloists, singers, musicians, poetry recitals, dancers and even ‘little Ant and Dec’ made an appearance. The whole cast comprised of the very, very young to the very, very not so young and they all shone with their wonderful enthusiasm. So once again dear Grange Youth Theatre group, we say a big thank you, to each and everyone of you, for all you do in making the evening so special and for thinking of others as you worked so hard, raising much needed funds for local charities, this year being Jigsaw Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice and Compassion. We say, as you sang in the show, ‘Thank you for the music, the songs you’re singing, thanks for all the joy you’re bringing’. God bless you all. Barbara and Reg Brown

Dear Editor I attended the Consultation Event at Cartmel Village Hall on 8th July in respect of the proposed affordable housing development at Pit Farm, Cartmel. GADAG’s view is that, though it is eminently sensible and desirable in its own right as a potential development of much-needed affordable homes, it lies outside the agreed Land Development Framework for the entire SLDC area that was assessed by an Independent Planning Inspector late last year. The Inspector spent innumerable hours over a twice-convened Planning Hearing in 2012 and 2013, hearing evidence and drawing certain conclusions, published in an extensive Report. The piece of land that has potentially been made available to the Housing Association is NOT in the Land Allocations Plan, and were it to come to the Planning Office as a fully-fledged application we think there would be many reasons why it would not be acceptable. Pete Nightingale on behalf of GADAG

Dear Editor In response to the letter from Elaine Halloran in July’s edition; we would like to take the opportunity to thank Elaine for her kind words about “little Margaret”, our Mum, Grannie and Great Grannie. We have received many other condolences and it is so nice for us to hear that she will be remembered fondly by the local community. We will all miss her very much, thanks again from all of “little Margaret’s” family Ruth Barnard

Grange based charity raises over £50,000 for local children The Michelle Jurd Memorial Trust is a Grange based charity that pays for local children to take part in adventurous activities. So far the charity has paid for local school children and Scout groups to do loads of activities; whole year groups have had ski training at the Chill Factor and kayaking at Coniston, local Scouts have been climbing at Kendal wall, and the whole of Grange school have had adventure days at Castlehead Outdoor centre. To date, it has raised over £50,000 for good causes. Neil Jurd, husband of Michelle and founder of the charity told Grange Now, “this year’s ball is on the 8th November at the Netherwood Hotel, and we have 200 tickets to sell – the bigger the ball, the more adventurous activities for local children.”

LEGAL TALK Can you trust your children? part 2 Should you give your children the family silver whilst you are still fit and well. Things can happen in their lives which could take those assets more quickly than if you had kept them. Will they look after you if they already have the money? What if you fall out, or they spend it all, or lose it or run up debts? What about the daughter in law that you never quite liked? You must maintain your own security. Trusts are often the answer. Instead of making ‘no strings attached’ gifts to your children, make them Trustees (with someone independent if you like) of a Trust, of which the central right to benefit is yours. You control who the Trustees are and can sack them if they misbehave. You own any income the Trust produces and the right to stay in your house. In certain circumstances, the Trustees have the discretion to make capital payments to you. Trusts are flexible. You can add new family members or exclude them if you fall out. You can include gifts to grandchildren, set up education funds for them, put aside a deposit for their first house, all within one Trust. Trusts can protect you and your children. They have limitations (divorce courts are increasingly looking through them) and must be tailored to you along with Wills, Powers of Attorney and appropriate investments. Call us on (015395) 33316 to make a free appointment. After our meeting we will send you an explanation of relevant services with fixed price quotes. And we won’t tell your son what you think of your daughter in law! For the solicitor who knows all about how to protect your assets for your children, turn to Poole Townsend. Visit www.pooletownsend.co.uk/trustsandchildren2

Neil would also like to stress the need for more volunteers to get involved in the running of the charity and the ball, “as with all charities, we are dependent on volunteers. If you have some time to spare to help fundraise or organise and run events, please get in touch” If you’d like to go to the ball or be involved in organising the biggest event on the Grange social calendar, please call 07880 980203, or email Neil on neil@neiljurd.com.
