Letter from the Editor

Under Pressure!

Of all the local news in the last year, we have had more reaction in the office about the proposed development on Trickett’s Field than anything, except perhaps the proposed bus cuts. Who knows, with yet more developments still to come, we may soon need an airport to get everyone in and out. Are we really creating housing that is needed and affordable for local residents, or profit for developers at the expense of precious green space? The letters page is almost totally devoted to this issue. Don’t miss the Edwardian Festival on Saturday 14th June. More details on page 3. We received some great images for the Backbarrow, Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge feature. What a fascinating area. The education for adults feature near the back (one month late) offers a wealth of ideas for interesting new pursuits. Did you know almost 10% of our readership is a member of U3A? Junior Reporters - get involved in our competition to win a family ticket for Old Hall Farm. There are two prizes to be won and entries close 16th June. Winning entries will appear in the July edition of Grange Now. Thanks to our great staff who in June will be producing both the July issue of Grange Now (deadline 23rd June) and the first edition of Windermere Now! Best wishes, Chris, Kerstin, Sharon and Glenn

On our increasingly crowded island it seems every community from town to village is having to cope with pressure from housing developments, increased traffic, parking restrictions and charges and threats to local independent businesses from national and international brands. The beautiful cricket pitch in Chipping in Lancashire where I was unfailingly useless but nonetheless spent many a pleasant day is now to be housing. The residents of Ambleside are facing every single one of the threats listed above simultaneously. So it is here on the Cartmel peninsula as everywhere else. We may not yet be on the current blacklist of towns in Cumbria to face on street parking charges, but the increase in traffic is inevitable. It is not only an increase in volume but also speed. In the traffic survey carried out between 18-24 January on Allithwaite Road/Carter Road, over half the vehicles were travelling over 30 mph. The same survey recorded 50 vehicles travelling over 50 mph and over 5% of passing traffic as a heavy goods vehicle. Had the survey been conducted in the summer months, the volume would of course been much greater with holiday traffic, caravan

owners, visitors to events and so on. All this leads on to the increase of housing which is currently underway. This of course will increase the level of traffic in volume. This is particularly true for Grange as the three major developments proposed or underway all funnel traffic down Main Street. Take Trickett’s field - the proposed development of 68 houses. In South Lakeland the number of cars per household stands at an average of 1.9. So we are talking about 130 additional vehicles, each making 3 trips per day coming to 2700 per week, perhaps. Probably 90% of this traffic will need to exit/ return via Main St. However, we have another 85 houses to consider when you add in Berry Bank and Berners. To put it in numbers, the combined effect of Trickett’s field, Berry Bank and Berners comes to 153 houses with 290 cars and 872 trips per day, perhaps even

more from Berry Bank as it is less convenient to walk. Add into the mix proposed bus cuts and extra traffic visiting perhaps two new supermarkets and even the sceptical would have to admit there is cause for concern. In recent issues of Grange Now there has been some debate about a one way system for Kents Bank Road. The powers that be will no doubt make their decision on this and perhaps other schemes.

Grange and the Cartmel peninsula is by no means isolated from the increasing pressure of ‘progress’.

WE NEED YOU!

Grange and District Community First Responders This voluntary group has been serving the local community for over ten years attending over 300 calls every year but now urgently need new Community First Responders to join us so that we can continue to provide this service. You don’t need any medical experience or former training as you will receive full training and ongoing support from an established team of Responders. What you will need is, to be over 18 years of age and have access to a vehicle. We ask that you can be available for a few hours each week to attend calls and can be available for ongoing training and development.

If you would like to know more or wish to apply then please contact: Judith Newton (Team Leader) on Grange 34896 evenings or weekend or alternatively email: jnjude@yahoo.co.uk

Trickett’s Field planning application. ‘A terrible application’ - Grange Town Council. Grange Town Council has recommended that the planning application, by Envidia Homes, to build 68 houses on Tricketts Field, be thrown out by planners.

The application, which proposes to build 10 two- bedroom, 2 threebedroom, 32 four-bedroom and 24 one-two bedroom flats for affordable rent, has been slammed by Cllr Tom Harvey as a, “terrible application which is ill thought out with a myriad of issues that would cause problems”. Tricketts Field is the latest in a long line of planning applications to build on the peninsula’s green land, but this application by the Blackpool based firm has brought condemnation from all sides. Local residents were quick to lodge objections to the plan along with local action groups Grange and District Action Group and Grange Civic Society who have lodged well written objections based on sound arguments. They have raised objections based on the fact that this application merely pays ‘lip service’

to the area Development Plan. Grange Civic Society has opposed the application on four grounds which were drainage, traffic impacts, context of housing requirements and proposed housing. Granting this planning application in its current form would require part of the wall to be demolished and the felling of several of the lime trees and the loss of, arguably, one of the prettiest views in Grange. Grange Civic Society agree that there is a need for affordable housing in the area but this

application offers apartments only, making the assumption that, “all those wanting affordable housing are satisfied by the provision of apartments”. They feel this is unlikely and suggest the developers reconsider the split of housing provision between affordable and open market housing. The Society has also expressed a desire to see more detail of the external design of the proposed housing as they feel the “designs make gestures towards the existing adjacent house styles but we feel more could be done”. As Cllr Harvey put it, “I think there’s a general acceptance that this a site that may well be built on but it needs to be for better, not worse.” 20 years ago, planning permission was refused on this site.

Fernleigh road parking scare!

Local residents visited the Grange Now office to express dismay at the new parking sign which had been put up on Fernleigh Road. Some investigations later revealed that it had been a case of mistaken street - the signs should have gone up on Kents Bank Road. The new sign restricting parking outside the library is staying where it is - apparently. There was relief all round and a little amusement as the Fernleigh Road signs had been erected not only on the wrong street but also

All this merriment does not detract from the very real issue of increasing pressures on parking availability in and around Grange and the looming threat of on street parking charges which are being introduced in 11 towns around Cumbria (thankfully the list does not yet include Grange, Cartmel or the surrounding villages).

Grange Soroptimists raise nearly £5,000 for local charities

This financial year the Grange Soroptimists have been able to give £4,739 to local, National and International Charities including £500 to St Mary’s Hospice, £50 for the Grange Christmas tree, £250 for Eden hospice Jigsaw appeal , £590 to ShelterBox, £1,684 to WaterAid and £1000 for MCAI supporting Maternity services

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP Chartered Financial Planner

Drawing one’s pension benefits at retirement is a major financial decision. There are generally various options and given that some of these are irreversible it is clearly important that the correct decisions are made. Up until the recent Budget the majority of people would use their pension fund to draw up to 25% as a tax free lump sum and then buy an annuity with the remainder. There are various options in terms of the type of annuity but generally for the majority of people there was no alternative to buying an annuity. For those with large pension pots (in excess of £150,000) income drawdown was often the preferred options. Therefore, although the terms would need to be agreed the procedure was relatively straightforward. The Budget proposals (note these are only proposals which it is hoped will come into force in April 2015) provide good news and bad news in terms of drawing pension benefits.

The good news is that there will be far greater flexibility including the option of “cashing in” one’s pension fund (except for final salary schemes). Clearly this flexibility can only be good news since it is still possible to purchase an annuity as previously. The downside of the proposals is that what was relatively straightforward now becomes extremely complicated and a much riskier decision.

For example, when one had no alternative to buying an annuity the only thing that could ‘go wrong’ is the choice of annuity provider and the terms of the annuity. Other than that, there was not too much scope for error. Under the proposed rules the risk is much greater – should you buy an annuity? Should you cash in the pension fund? If you cash in will you have enough alternative income? If you buy an annuity do you have enough free capital? The impact on one’s family must also be accounted for.

The government plans to bring in an advice process but it needs to be sure that this is worthwhile and relevant. Please do not misjudge my comments – the proposed changes will be excellent if they come into force as planned provided it is done correctly. If not, the risks are great.

The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Frank recalled the time when he was doing one of his war memorabilia talks for the Heritage Society in Lamplugh, ”Archie came along with me but unfortunately the evening wasn’t very well attended and at the end of my talk, I said to the audience, you might be interested to know that the man sat next to me who hasn’t said a word all evening is actually one of the original members of The Dambusters”,Frank laughed saying, “they wouldn’t let him go. We were there for ages answering questions, and

when the others members of the society, the ones who had gone to the pub instead, found out who had been at the talk, they were devastated.” Frank said, “he liked everything to be done right. He wouldn’t cut corners but he was always willing to give the benefit of the doubt to people. He was a good man.” “He was quiet and unassuming and wasn’t the type who’d show off about any of the things he did in the war. But he had some amazing things to tell you once you got to know him.”

Mr Johnstone was a member of 44 Rhodesia Bomber Squadron but was picked to join the 617 Squadron after the Dambusters raids. On 12 November 1944, Mr Johnstone, aged 30, helped sink the Tirpitz as it guarded the sea off the coast of Norway. Hitler was using the heavily armed ship to stop the allies reaching Russia but thanks to 617 Squadron and the now legendary, ‘Tallboy bombs’, the ship was sunk and took with it Hitler’s naval power in the Northern waters. The Tallboy bombs were of course the invention of Barnes Wallis who was also famous for inventing the so-called ‘bouncing bombs’ which were used to breach the Mohne and Eder dams, the Dam Buster raids. “617 squadron played a massive part in the war effort”, Mr Lomas said and added, “it was a privilege and a pleasure to have known him.” Mr Johnstone was born in Scotland but moved to Cumbria as a child and prior to the war he was a policeman in Windermere. He had two children and spent the last few months of his life near his son, Robert, in Skelmersdale. On his 98th birthday, as a mark of respect, a Lancaster Bomber flew over the nursing home where he was living.

products in Grange. Although Grange has been a Fairtrade town since 2006, Grange Primary school recently did a survey which highlighted that Grange could be doing better in terms of buying and consuming Fairtrade products. The committee are appealing to all organisations and businesses to have an entry in the Fairtrade directory. Please send information including the

name of your organisation/ business, the Fairtrade items you stock, address and email contact to Isabel Huggett huggett735@btinternet.com for inclusion in the directory. The committee would also like to urge everyone to please ask for Fairtrade products when shopping as this really empowers disadvantaged producers by tackling injustice in conventional trade.

Grange hero dies aged 99 Archie Johnstone, member of the RAF’s 617 squadron, more commonly known as, ‘The Dambusters’, has died at the age of 99. Archie, a bomb aimer within the squad, lived with his family in Grange for 30 years. According to friend and fellow member of the Royal British Legion, Frank Lomas, “he was a very private man who didn’t brag about who he was and what had happened during the war. He would tell you some things eventually, once he got to know you, but he was a quiet man. A gentleman.”

The Fairtrade committee, which includes members of the Chamber of Trade, Grange School and the Soroptimists, are keen to produce a directory of organisations and businesses who use and sell Fairtrade

Does this spell the death of another small town or does it mean more choice, and ultimately more customers, in all the shops in Grange? The answer to that one largely depends on who you speak to? Those who live in the peninsula are split on this one. Varying opinions have been offered to Grange Now from, those who believe our needs are adequately being met by the Co-op and Spar, and the vast array of quality foods and products available from our many and varied independent retailers. They believe a supermarket would be the end of the independents as everyone would go for the ‘one-stop shop’ and before long Grange would become ,‘a ghost town’. In 2007, a research team from the University of Southampton were commissioned, by Tesco, to do a ‘before’ and ‘after’ study into the effects of a supermarket on small towns. The university gathered evidence from 8,000 consumers and 1,000 traders in market towns. The supermarkets that had opened in these towns included Wm Morrison, Waitrose and Tesco. Professor Neil Wrigley, the report’s co-author, said at the time, the research found that supermarkets built on town centre or edge-of-town sites encourage fewer residents to leave the town to carry out their shopping. There is also a significant amount of “spill over” of shopping activity to independent shops when a superstore opens, he said. It is worth

remembering here that we are not getting a discount superstore but a Tesco Express and Booths which are not necessarily at the lower end of the price scale. Some 4,500 signatures were collected from those who were originally against Booths coming to Grange. I wonder if this could have been worse had say the supermarket been Asda, Morrisons or Tesco, who are known for their price wars whereas Booths are known for quality rather than cheaper prices - is this not better news for the independent retailers? The redevelopment of the former British Legion site brought confirmation on May 9th that Tesco have applied to open a Tesco Express within the site. Tesco spokesperson Mark Thomas said, “We’d really like to open a store in Grange-over-Sands. This Express would be great for the community, creating new jobs (20 we are told) and providing a convenient place to shop. Our proposals are sensitively designed to complement the town’s character and would mean a long-term future for the former Royal British Legion building is secured.”

Woodlands Hotel is a superb looking traditional Lakeland Stone building with Westmorland Slate roof set in a great location in 3 acres of Woodlands in Meathop near Grange over Sands.

On Sunday 18th May, locals enjoyed a free play day as part of the Lawn Tennis Association’s Open Days campaign. The lovely astroturf courts were full of families, enjoying the gorgeous weather, and playing some fantastic tennis. The short-tennis court play was fast and furious, and the food went down very well too. The next date for your diary, and one not to be missed, is our Wimbledon warm up. The tennis club have drafted in tennis coaches to help get everyone back into shape for the upcoming competition season and of course, just to get everyone back into the swing! Structured club nights, with coaching for adults, will be held once a month on the following dates: Friday 23rd May; Friday 20th June; Friday 18th July from 6 8pm. There are also group coaching sessions, for all abilities, on the following dates - Wednesday 21st May; Wednesday 4th June

accomodation, refurbishing the kitchen and renewing all the electrics, extending and refurbishing the main building restaurant and bar, building of nine comfortable log cabins in the hotel grounds most with sauna and spa bath. All this change while maintaining the integrity of the woodland landscape. Our main strengths according to most recent reviews are friendly staff, great food, good value , great location, super breakfasts, together with a relaxed homely atmosphere. This is thanks to the dedication of our current manager, chef, and many other long serving members of staff.

At one time it was part of the Hospital complex in Meathop. It was a large accommodation for the senior doctor. In the 1960’s it was shut as a Hospital complex, and the land was divided and sold to the Lake District Planning Authority. The Woodlands Hotel was bought in 1994. It needed some care and attention. Improvements we have made during the last 20 years include replacing the old coal fire central heating system for a much cleaner and more efficient oil fired central heating system, fully modernising and refurbishing the five guest bedrooms and the managers 2 bedroomed

School Reports

Allithwaite CE School

On June 16th we will be holding an Arts Week for the whole school. As part of this, on Thursday 19th June, Abbott Hall Art Centre from Kendal are visiting, bringing with them, under close guard, a piece of artwork.

On Thursday 1st May Grange Primary School welcomed visitors from Age UK to share their gardening expertise with the children.

school hall at 2:45pm. Parents, carers and members of the public are invited to either join the assembly or come after school until 4:00pm to view the painting and the children’s work, inspired by the art. There will be refreshments after school for those wishing to come along. We would really value your support as this is a wonderful opportunity to bring a masterpiece into the community.

The artwork is a piece called ‘Candle in the Window’ by famous and local artist, Winifred Nicholson.

The art will be exhibited in our hall as part of the ‘Art on Tour’ project. It will be a stimulus for a variety of workshops involving the children throughout the day. This will culminate in a special assembly to celebrate the work produced which will be held in the

Grange Pre-school

The sun shone beautifully for us when we gathered in Park Road Gardens for an Easter Egg hunt. This half term we have been learning about our senses, exploring how we use them to gather information. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Grange Fire station - thank you to Eric and Mike for showing us round. We would also like to thank: Grange Primary School for hosting our first Nearly New Sale - details of our early Autumn one to follow; Both Gemmas and Penny for running our baby group ‘Comets’ over the past year; Sal for the basket and her parents for their

loose change collection; Claire for the popular workbench and tools; Grange Co-op and all customers who have placed donations in our tins at the tills so far; Our newly enlisted ‘Friends of Grange Pre-school Community Waterers’, Alistair, Alan, Liz and Ron. If you have any clean, unwanted soft toys, please bring them to the Pavilion any Monday, Wednesday or Friday am by 11th June. Thank you.

The intergenerational project was a great success with the older people sharing their gardening knowledge. The children reciprocated by sharing details of their global learning work on Nepal. Marigolds were chosen as they are of great cultural significance in Nepal and had been presented in garlands to year 6 teacher Paula Whinfield when she visited Grange’s link school in Sikles, Nepal in December. The school will welcome two teachers from Nepal in June. The link has been supported by the British Council

following the school achieving International Schools Award Status last year. Dr Sara Parker from LJMU has also been supporting the school sharing her extensive knowledge of Nepal and the Sikles area with the children. Dr Parker spent time with the Age UK visitors yesterday sharing photographs and talking about her work on ageing in Nepal. Sid Foster from Allithwaite who visited the school with Age UK said “This international approach that the youngsters have is absolutely marvellous.”

Flookburgh Primary School

After a very busy spring term at Flookburgh School with lots of interesting activities and events shared with our friends and families We all enjoyed our Easter celebrations and time off school.

June sees a transformation in Bobs as we launch our “Paul Mitchell Colour Bar” A dedicated area to all things colour. On June 11th Paul Mitchell expert, ‘Alan’ will be in the Salon all day to consult and advise you on any hair colour question. You can also ring to make a free consultation appointment. If you’re fed up with your usual colour, lacking shine, looking dull or just ready for a change? Bob’s in collaboration with Paul Mitchell has the answer. Whether it’s a semi, quasi, permanent or ink work from natural to extremely daring, we can match up and improve on your existing colour.

The sun is truly out in Bob’s. We have holiday travel packs ready for the beach, our new range of ‘switch flops’ has arrived and they are mavellous. Every holiday bag needs a pair! Sam our beauty therapist is on hand to perfect toes and nails (Gel, Shellac or sculptered acryllic) nail art, threading eyebrows, semi permanent eyelashes and spray tans galore. Bring on the summer! Just a quick note to all my friends and clients who have shown me and my family such great support over the past 2 months. Literally hundreds of cards, letters, flowers and kind words have been an enormous comfort. Thank you all so much for your understanding.

We have done lots of “travelling” last spring term including a trip to Kenya, Scotland, France and Poland learning about those countries, which was a part of Global Learning Project undertaken by Flookburgh School. So we needed a good rest and started this summer term with excitement and a fresh approach to learning. Key stage 1 children walked around the village looking at different uses of buildings in geography. A fun morning was had by all. Croftlands Infants came to visit Mrs. Procter and all the children on the way to Ducky’s Park Farm. Our Reception class said: “ That was the best playtime ever! “ We also visited St John the Baptist Church for ‘Spring’ themed service. All our parents said “what a happy occasion enhancing our community links”. We were visited by a ‘Scientist’ for the Some of our little ones are getting all grown up & will start school in September, which means we can now offer new places..... We are a fun, friendly and relaxed childminding setting located near to Grange Primary School.

day who shared his experiments with us and we were his assistants for the day. It was a very surprising and useful learning experience. Class 3 enjoyed their wonderful Residential and next in the queue for an adventure is Class 4 with their visit to Edinburgh after their hard work on SAT’s. Sports Day in Flookburgh School is going to take place on the 26th of June. As every year, all parents, grandparents and friends are warmly welcomed to join us and cheer us on. There are also some exciting after school clubs this summer term: Mrs. Procter runs a “good food” club, Miss Cannon a multi sports club, Mr. Ross a science club and Mrs. Brown an outdoor sports club. These are great opportunities for our children to develop their knowledge and build up confidence.

At Cartmel Priory CofE School, being sited at the centre of great outdoor sports grounds allows us not only to offer a broad range of activities during PE lessons, but also the chance to run three House Sports Days a year. Each Sports Day, students in Years 7-10 compete for their Houses; Cavendish, Marshal, Preston and

There is a Winter Sports day when students represent their house in Football, Rugby, Basketball, Netball and Hockey, a Spring Sports Day in which they play Cricket, Rounders, Boccia and Tennis and, finally, a traditional Athletics Sports Day in Summer. Year 6 are busy planning their residential visit to London later this month. Staying at the University of London they will be travelling around the city on an open top bus, seeing behind the scenes at the Royal Albert Hall, watching a top west end show and spending time in museums. Our Gardening club have been very busy getting the school garden ready for summer. Many different vegetables have been planted and all children in school have planted a sunflower seed for our annual competition. Thank you to Cartmel in Bloom for the donation of the seeds. We are busy planning a ‘reflection garden’ and several parents and friends are working with the older children designing beds, seating areas and a water feature. The stained glass window for our school hall and dining room is near completion and will be installed during the final half term. Plans are also in development to build new classrooms enabling us to

Mayor’s Report

This final month has seen me performing a first (for me at least) as I was asked to cut the ribbon to open the new Otter Lodge Owners Lounge at the Lakeside Leisure Park at Flookburgh. It is a delightful building and it is obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the details, particularly of the interior. I was very taken with the view over the lake (reclaimed from marshland and already adopted by a pair of swans) and the chainsaw carved wooden otters which decorate the inside as well as the outside.

County Matters

have larger teaching areas and dedicated rooms for Computing, ICT and Art. Several of our children have been enjoying taking part in the Orienteering events in the South Lakes area and we are looking forward to our own sports day at the end of the month.

On June 28th we are holding a Summer Fair in our school grounds. In addition to plant and cake stalls there will be a coconut shy, face painting, games, ice-creams, refreshments, a raffle, a BBQ , toy stall and Tombola. Please join us for what promises to be a fun-filled afternoon.

I am unlikely to take a holiday there as it is rather close to home but I am sure that those who do will appreciate this new building and it will be well used. My second invitation came from Grange Rotary who invited me to their Charter Dinner. The company was both friendly and interesting, the meal was delicious and I met a large number of local people who give up their time and energy to raise money for good causes. It has been a busy and interesting year acting as Deputy Mayor. Although I really would have preferred it if Councillor Bailey had been well enough to attend and

I would like to thank the Grange Youth Group for organising the fund raising for this project which now completes the equipment on the site. This has been done in consultation with the young people. County Councillors are at present looking at ways we can find savings for the next few years without having to cut services to our residents. One area which again and again comes back to us is the need to have more streamlined services across all Councils. This means looking at having one Council to run

Tim’s Column With the Euro Elections taking place in May (thank you so much to everyone in Grange and the surrounding area who made the effort to vote, the seriousness that we treat voting around here makes me very proud to be your MP) along with District Council elections in Kendal and a few other places around South Lakeland I have been spending much of my time knocking on doors. This is one of the parts of my job that I most enjoy. I love talking to people about their issues and seeing what we can do to help them. In fact if you ask any of the people who come with me they will tell you how frustrating I can be to go out with as they think I spend far too much time talking to people when I should be trying to get around as many houses as possible. But it is really important that I get out and take time to hear what people are thinking and what is worrying them. Over the past few weeks many people have been spontaneously bringing up the subject I mentioned here last month, that of the future of the Westmorland General Hospital. Clearly my concerns are shared widely and a great many of you have taken the time to sign our petition in support of the hospital. In the month since my last column the Hospital Trust has published the results of a national survey of cancer patients in England asking them how they rated the treatment that they had received. 100% of those in the sample receiving treatment in Kendal felt that it was good or better. With this sort of support from the people who actually use the hospital the Trust really should be investing in it and offering more cancer treatments there, especially radiotherapy, rather than thinking about pulling out from the site completely leaving patients with the prospect of long journeys down the M6 to Preston at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. On top of this we have had the announcement from the new head of NHS England that the policy of closing small local hospitals that his predecessor was keen on pursuing may not be the correct approach and that the NHS needs to think harder about how it can support more hospitals like ours in Kendal. If you have not signed our petition yet please please do so, better than that please ensure that all of your friends and family also sign the petition, see it as your personal challenge to see how many signatures you can collect. You can find the petition (including a printable version) by going to my website. If you need my help with anything and I have not managed to get round to your doorstep over the past month (possibly because I spent too long talking to your neighbours) please write to me, Tim Farron, at Acland House, Smokehouse Yard, Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4ND or email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk.

Seasonal food with Stuart Higginson

We may be on our way to summer, but it’s not quite al-fresco, saladeating weather just yet! Here at Higginsons, we think we’ve found the perfect food to bridge the gap between winter casseroles and summer Barbeque food – our ‘Mini Joints’ Range brings a new approach to the traditional Sunday Roast. Be it Lamb, Beef or Pork, our Mini Roasts are modern, quick, easy , and perfect for a healthy home-cooked meal any night of the week! Stuart says “The advantages of these Mini Joints over the traditional Roasting Joints are that they are easy to cook, easy to carve and because they’re smaller, they’re perfect for smaller families or couples, and there is no plate waste”. These versatile mini roasts can be enjoyed throughout the seasons, are small enough to Barbeque and taste great served with seasonal summer produce. Here’s our recipe suggestions: Mini Lamb Roast with Cumbrian Samphire, local Sandgate new potatoes & seasonal buttered Asparagus Perfect Father’s Day Roast Dinner with a Beef Topside Mini Roast, seasonal broad beans & roast potatoes. Kids don’t have to be members of the Trust to join our group, but those who are members receive a welcome pack full of interesting and useful things. We usually meet on the first Sunday of each month from 2-4pm but there are exceptions.

The top field will be full of colour and on warmer days the scent is strong. Yellow rattle, Meadow cranesbill, common spotted orchid, buttercup to name just a few. This is a great place to look for insects such as Butterflies, day flying moths, different kinds of Bees, Grasshoppers, Dragonflies and Beetles.

Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve Opens to Ospreys and Visitors

A pair of ospreys has arrived at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve, near Witherslack in South Cumbria, and 10 days ago the female bird settled on a nest. A pair of ospreys attempted to nest for the first time last year but failed to produce any eggs, and so this year could see the nature reserve’s very first osprey chicks! Although eggs have not yet been spotted on the still photographs that are being taken by a remote camera, the female bird is constantly sitting, indicating she has laid eggs. Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve has been closed to visitors for the last four months for repairs to footpaths and boardwalks, which have come at the end of 15 years of restoration of the peat bog. 300 metres of boardwalk, to a raised platform, have been installed and work is still in progress to create a circular route. Further work also needs to be done to finish the car park, with information boards and a cabin where people can find out more about this special place. To see photos and read the blog about the ospreys visit www. cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk/reserves/ foulshaw-moss to find information on visiting the nature reserve.

Swifts in Grange

You should have already seen the first swifts of the year as they started to arrive on the 5th May. They will only be with us for about three months. We swift enthusiasts may be spotted this summer loitering suspiciously on fine summer evenings in Grange, Kents Bank and Allithwaite counting these

magical birds as they circle the town in their “screaming” parties. If you are lucky enough to host a colony of these magical birds or have seen them disappearing under someone’s eaves please let me know so that we can concentrate our efforts this summer and learn more about Grange swifts. Rhymetime will be on Monday mornings as usual on 2nd, 9th & 16th June. Come along and join in with the stories and songs for preschool children and their carers from 10 to 10.30 am. The 16th will be the last Rhymetime before the summer holidays and a chance to dress up in your brightest clothes It is also the last Rhymetime run by Emma, after 5 years of organising Rhymetime at the Library. She will be sadly missed by everyone (of every age!) Are you aged between 5 to 18 and want to have reduced rate bus travel? Apply for an A2B card and you will pay a maximum of £1.80 for a single and £3.00 for a return journey, except on school days before 9.30 am or between 3 and 5 pm. The Card costs £7.50 and you can apply at the Library – bring a passport photo and proof of your age and address (under 16s need the form signed by a parent or guardian) plus your payment. National Bookstart Week runs from 9th June with a theme of My Hero so our display in the Children’s Library will celebrate old and new Heroes. Bookstart is a scheme which provides free reading materials for young children from their Health Visitor or Nursery. Libraries have a Bookstart Bear scheme, where pre-school children have a Passport which is stamped with a pawprint each time they visit the library and they receive certificates every 6th visit. This month we have a 3Ps (3 Parks) Garden display in the library, which will show the range of improvement works which have been undertaken over the winter and the plans for the summer in the Ornamental Gardens,

Veterans Garden and Park Road Garden. The 3Ps AGM is also this month on 12th, if you would like to find out more and perhaps get involved in this valuable work for the community. Morecambe Bay Butterfly Task Force will also be providing a display about their work surveying rare butterflies and information about how to get involved in their work. There is still time to enter The Wilfred Owen Association Poetry Competition before entries close on 30th June. Entry forms are available from the Library or online at www.wilfredowen.org.uk The Royal British Legion will be visiting the Library on Tuesday 20th June from 10 am to 1 pm - if you were in the services, then come along and find out more. Grange Library will be holding events and preparing displays to mark the First World War. If you have any information or memorabilia you would like to share about your family’s experiences or the impact on the local area to include in these displays or events, please contact Lyn at the Library.

Local Achievements On Sunday 11th May, John Nottingham completed the 112 mile Fred Whitton Cycling Challenge, over six Lake District Passes, in aid of McMillan Cancer Support, raising over £500. John would like to thank those who sponsored him, and family and friends who provided invaluable support, both before and on the day of the event. Thank you all very much indeed! Well done John. A great effort, both cycling and fundraising - Editor.

Grange now would like to offer congratulations to Tricia Thomas who has been elected to be Civic Mayor. Jackie Bailey, widow of former Mayor, Norman Bailey, has been elected as Mayor’s Consort and Tom Harvey has been re-elected as Council Leader.

Cartmel Art Society Cartmel Art Society held its AGM on Wednesday 30th April in the village hall when new officers and committee members were elected and an exciting new programme for 2014/2015 was issued. After a lovely buffet lunch members were treated to a watercolour demonstration by the renowned artist Terry Harrison who painted beautiful pictures of bluebell woods using very effective techniques. Our twice monthly meetings will resume in September, but during the Summer months members have an opportunity to meet up and paint outdoors at local venues. Members will also be working towards our popular Exhibition to be held in the village hall from 12th August- 16th August when paintings will be on display to view and for sale. We welcome membership enquiries from enthusiastic men and ladies who are keen to paint and be actively involved. For more information please contact the Secretary on 015395 61361 and to find out more about us and the Exhibition visit our website at www.cartmelartsociety.co.uk

beating Laraine Keating in the final.

Well done to all who took part and to the organisers.

Allithwaite & Cartmel Wi The members of Allithwaite & Cartmel WI had a lively session at the May 6th meeting when a demonstration and talk on Clog Dancing was given by Tina Boyle and her group. Dances from different parts of the UK, from the South Coast to the Outer Hebrides, were performed to the accompaniment of musicians playing a mandolin and a concertina. Members took part in a Morris dance which was great fun, both for themselves and the audience. Numerous pairs of clogs were then produced which many members tried on, quite a few of them having worn clogs as children. They were then persuaded to try a simple clog dance which caused some hilarity. The next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd June at 2.00pm at Allithwaite Community Centre when Caroline Goleckza will give a talk entitled “Makeover Magic”. New members are always welcome, contact Wendy Graham (secretary) 015395 32702.

Grange Soroptimists On March 28th the club raised £350 for WaterAid with a sell-out Ceilidh in Cartmel Village Hall. The next day 5 members swam in the Kendal Swimathon raising £ 590 for ShelterBox. The club are working on the Town Crest project which is gaining momentum. Local businesses have been generous and the plan to put the town crest near the station is hopeful.

Retiring President Rosemary congratulated the club at the AGM as £4739 was raised for charities this year including £1684 for WaterAid.

Grange Club celebrates 60 years and new President Janice Carrick was installed on April 29th. This year’s programme promises to be a mixture of activities including the Music Hall event on June 14th at the Victoria Hall. We are also having another Singalong , to raise money for, “Birthing in the Gambia”. Come and join us on July 29th for the Sound of Music! There are lots of opportunities for dressing up if you wish! The Soroptimists are working on Grange Fair Trade Committee to produce a new Fair trade directory for Grange.

Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on our work and events see our website www.sigbi.org/grange-over-sands/

Mothers’ Union The Mothers’ Union meeting held at St Paul’s on Wednesday May 7th, was sparsely attended. After a Bible reading and prayers, our branch leader introduced Mrs Helen Cameron who told us about her recent trek in Nepal, where she achieved her goal of reaching the Everest base camp. She chatted to us about her experiences and because we were a small group, it became very personal and very enjoyable. It really was a “fireside chat” atmosphere. She had brought with her samples of Nepalese crafts for us to see including a rug made from Yak wool. Did you know that every part of the animal including the bones are used? Tea and cake followed and everyone agreed that it had been a most informative and fun afternoon. Helen thought it had been good practice for a larger audience expected at her talk the following week!

Our Autumn Programme has now been planned and meetings will be held on THURSDAYS in September, October, November and December. They range from an AFIA Beetle Drive to a Fairtrade Pass the Parcel, both accompanied by informal talks and lots of fun. Lapsed Mothers’ Union members and visitors are all welcome. For information ring, 015395 32284.

Three Parks Group The replanting of trees and shrubs at the southern end of the Ornamental Gardens has now been completed except for more bark chippings which will become available in due course. Discussions are in progress with the District Council about the next area it is suggested should be be treated, adjacent to the duck hut, where a large tree blew down during the winter. A new see-saw has been installed to replace a rotten structure in the large children’s playground on the promenade, thanks to the support of our County Councillor.

We are pleased to find the District Council has been able to replace and repair broken and loose stanchions along the promenade railings which have been a problem for a long time.

An application has been made to the New Homes Bonus Fund for finance to replace cracked and broken concrete sections of paths in the Ornamental Gardens following a detailed survey by NPS, the Managing Agents for the District Council. The Annual General Meeting of the Group will be held on the 12th June at 2pm in the Victoria Hall. All are welcome to attend.

Grange NSPCC On Saturday, 3rd May, the NSPCC held a street collection in Grange and, because of the generosity of passersby, £230 was raised, for which we extend our thanks both to the collectors and members of the general public.

We look forward to meeting all the supporters of the NSPCC at our Summer Coffee Morning on Friday 6th June, (not 16 June as I inadvertently put in last month’s copy of Grange Now), from 10 am until noon, in Grange over Sands Parish Hall. This will be an opportunity to pick up a bargain from our stalls and also meet up with friends over a cup of coffee.

Witherslack WI Ann Walshaw chaired the May meeting at which she lead a discussion of the Resolution on Organ Donation. Three people die each day while waiting for a life saving organ. Members were glad that this was one that the WI could do something about instead of “urging the government”. The vote was unanimously in favour. The Exhibition “Step back in Time“ had been most successful raising over £3000 for the church. Pauline Hodgson was thanked for setting up the WI exhibit. The Fashion Show was a great success and made £521 for institute funds and the 3 models were congratulated.

Tina Pearsall was presented with a large bouquet of flowers as a thank you for all the programme and ticket printing she does. Plans for the 90th birthday September are in place.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society The packed May meeting was addressed by local Great War expert Howard Martin who told us about the Cartmel Valley men who died during the conflict. They included two men who died in accidents before they left this country and the only naval death which occurred off the coast of Chile when a ship was sunk. The talk, well-illustrated with pictures of the soldiers, their residences and their graves or memorials also covered the battles and places where they had died. Howard shared his knowledge of some of the families involved, having spoken to relatives and people who knew them. The dead included boys and men from all parts of the community. Howard had visited the battlefields and showed us some souvenirs he had collected. It was a very moving talk and his passion to find out more about the men behind the names was evident. The talk finished with pictures of different types of memorials in the district.

We will be visiting Lowther Castle Gardens during the summer and the next meeting, at Cartmel Village Hall, will be on Thursday 4 September at 7.30 pm. For more information contact Pat Rowlands on 015395 32234 or email patrowland_uk@yahoo.co.uk

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting on June 12th. Enquiries please to Sylvia on 32215.

Grange WI Grange members met recently to hear Ian Huitson talk about being a medic in Afghanistan. He was in Iraq in 2002 and then Afghanistan in 2007, in charge of the hospital camp. Despite the subject matter it was a very entertaining talk. On Thursday 26 June (7.30pm) Marilyn Hale will demonstrate Encaustic Art. This will be a very hands-on evening with the opportunity to create your own decorative card. And don’t forget to pop along to the WI tent at the Holker festival to see entries from Grange members. And pop along to our stall at the Edwardian Festival on 14 June. As ever, new members are welcome. Contact Joanne on 015395 32932 or Gillian on 015395 34019

The Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch This month we were pleased to welcome Katie Chaplin who has a great interest in Japanese culture and textiles. In the morning Katie showed us how a woman would be dressed in a kimono from the

Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. underwear to the beautifully hand painted and embroidered kimono which we see from the outside. There are no fastenings of any description on the parts of the kimono with all the different pieces held in place by ties. We were informed that to be dressed properly would take a woman about 4 hours! After lunch we each chose two fat quarters of Japanese material to make a “hana” bag. All stitching was done by hand and members worked speedily to try and finish the bag before the end of the session. Once stitched the bag was folded in a special way and a drawstring added. Our thanks go to Katie for an enjoyable day.

The next meeting is Tuesday 3rd June when we will be making a wire structure with Priscilla Jones. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Anne Covell on 01539 737049.

Grange Probus Club On May 12th Colin Milner gave an illustrated talk entitled How to stay alive in Midsomer County. With a series of very attractive photographs he showed the various places used in the filming of the Midsomer Murders TV series. These are located roughly in an area between Oxford and Milton Keynes. The question was raised as to whether there actually was a place called Midsomer and one member replied that he had lived in Midsomer Norton which is on the River Somer in Somerset.

Grange Fell Golf Club Ladies Section As the golfing season progresses, we have had some lovely sunny days giving us glorious views of the fells and Morecambe Bay. We had the first of three rounds of the Edna Martland Stableford Competition. The Qualifiers of the Harrap and Cavendish Trophies have been played and both knockout competitions will continue throughout the summer. The Ping 4BBB stableford was won by R Hall and C Campbell (42pts). E Woodburn and R Waring were runners up. As I write, we look forward to our Ladies Day Out to Casterton Golf Club.

Grange Lions Grange Lions are pleased to report that the collection at Booth’s store in Ulverston on Easter Saturday raised £428 for the Jigsaw appeal. At our April meeting a donation of £50 was made to the Northwest Blood Bikes organisation who do such sterling work to help the NHS transport urgent supplies to and from hospitals. April has seemed to be a quiet month but a very successful Family and Friends evening was held at the end of April in The Father Magner Rooms at St Charles church.

We all enjoyed David and Helen’s international food and as usual Peter’s quiz kept us entertained for the night.

Newton & Field Broughton WI Several members of Newton and Field Broughotn WI joined others from Allithwaite, Cartmel, Grange and

Lower Holker at the group meeting held in Cartmel on May 8th. The speaker was Morag Hopkins from The Smokery at Haverigg Prison. She gave a most interesting talk on the purpose of the prison, in particular the work of the smokehouse. All the food is sourced locally and sold in their shop and at various shows. They also smoke food stuffs for local businesses. Despite the fact that Haverigg is in a rural location the fact that the prisoners are kept occupied during the day gives them a sense of worth. Many obtain employment on release and the prison has a very low rate of re-offending. Tasters of some of the smoked foods were handed round and packs were on sale. Tea and cake followed the talk. There was also a raffle, bring and buy stall and a literature stall. The May meeting was held on the 15th. The main features of the Resolution ‘Increasing organ donation’ were highlighted by Sue Needham and the Resolution was passed on a show of hands. Following this Helen Cameron a member of the WI gave a very interesting talk on her trip to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Her talk was illustrated with photographs. It was the fulfilment of a long held ambition to make the journey and she had obviously enjoyed it very much. She also showed samples of local crafts including a blanket made from Yak wool. Tea and cakes were served after the meeting. There was also a bring and buy table at the meeting, proceed from which were to be shared between ACWW and the Institute. The next meeting will be on June 11th when there will be a hands-on demonstration of Origami. It will take place at Lindale Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm.

South Lakeland Mind We’ve been rather out of touch with Grange Now of late, but SLM has been very busy with staff changes and expanding services. Please note that our drop in service in Grange is still held in the Young Cumbria Building beneath the Fire Station every Monday, 1:30 – 4pm. This is a safe and welcoming space for people who are experiencing emotional and mental distress, and often isolation. We are currently recruiting volunteers for our Kendal drop in, held at Stricklandgate House, 92 Stricklandgate, LA9 4PU. Drop in volunteers offer conversation, advice and information and peer support. Volunteers will work alongside a support worker to engage with service users, provide chats, discussion, and a listening ear. No formal qualifications are required. We are looking for people who possess a genuine desire to support people who experience emotional and mental distress, good communication skills, the ability to be supportive and nonjudgemental and the ability to develop and maintain appropriate boundaries. If you are interested, please get in touch. Tel: 01539 740591 or email: info@slmind.org.

Trefoil Guild Fev Dawson gave members a vivid account of a school in Ethiopia and a charity for poor children. She also described some of the wonderful scenery there and showed pictures of the rock churches.

The drenched assembly arrived at Bluebell Inn in Kettlewell to be greeted by a roaring fire and refreshments . Bonus of the day, the landlady produced 3 large bowls of FREE roast potatoes, think we will be going back there again!

Following a short break at the summit, the group arrived along the ridge of Heron Pike and Great Rigg. After lunch the return was made via Stone Arthur then along forest side of Coffin route. Grange and District Art Society My apologies for the confusion of last month which bewildered many, including myself. I can only claim a ‘Grange moment’ however in reality April 3rd saw an excursion to Salt Mills and a visit to the David Hockney Collection. The sun was shining; the trip was well attended by members and their guests, making for an interesting day with pleasant company. Like him or loathe him, we had the opportunity to see some of his work and make up our own minds. Many thanks to Angela Short, for making the arrangements and dealing with the queries. Our final evening session on Friday, May 2nd from 7.15pm to 9.15pm was a workshop in watercolour by Peter Threlfall, a well known local artist. An excellent turnout with many new faces and Peter will be visiting again in our new season for a session with acrylics.

Grange & District U3A The U3A elected its new committee at the April AGM; Malcolm Kimber becomes Chairman and Tricia Thomas becomes Vice-Chairman. We bade a grateful farewell to Eric Morrell who stood down after four years’ valiant service on the committee. The interest groups have commenced their summer programmes; the bowling group has re-started, the new men’s section of the golf group has planned its first event and the badminton and table tennis groups have moved to their summer start times in the same venues. Local Explorers recently visited Ingleborough caves whilst the Out and About group is about to visit Cornwall for a touring holiday. The cyclists are to tour the middle Lune Valley with a lunch stop at Kirkby Lonsdale.

On Monday 19th May members enjoyed a lovely day out, spending the morning in Penrith and the afternoon at Houghton Hall garden centre. On Monday 16th June we look forward to a demonstration by Arthur McDonald from Bury, entitled “Let Joy be Undefined”. As usual, visitors are always welcome to join us, and there is plenty of parking at the village hall. The competition season is in full swing and several of our members are working hard on their entries. Last year the club won first prize at Holker Garden Festival and so this year the club will create the main exhibit in the Floral Art tent. Members try to support all local shows with their entries.

Grange over Sands Community Led Plan A big thank you to all the residents of Grange who came to the meeting on Wednesday 14th May at the Victoria Hall. Your interest in, and comments on, the Plan in its draft format were good to hear. We were pleased to answer questions and discuss, albeit briefly, the results of the community questionnaire. The business community was pleased to see the results of their questionnaire and interested to share it with all their members. Grange Primary School’s display of their work on the community led plan was viewed with enthusiasm, both for the quality of the work and their opinions about the community. A special thanks to the mystery person who did the washing up! Now we are working on the final document. We need volunteers to help with various tasks connected with this and to take forward the Action Plan. If you are interested give your details to the Information Centre in the Victoria hall. Looking forward to sharing with everybody the final outcome.

Church News United Reformed Church

In 1972 a new United Reformed Church was formed by the coming together of the Congregational and Presbyterian Churches in England and Wales together with some smaller reformed denominations.

They have since been joined by churches in Scotland. This has proved a very healthy development and churches throughout the county are all looking at ways to come closer together, both in worship and work in the community. On Sunday, May 11th the congregations of both the URC and Methodist Churches in Grange agreed to worship together once a month, alternately in each church, starting in the autumn. We are looking forward to this experience and hope it will provide impetus for all the churches in Grange to grow closer. On May 12th a small group had an enjoyable walk round Cark led by David Lamb. Next month’s walk will be led by June Cook round Eden Mount. We have been taking part in the door-to door Christian Aid appeal, together with an excellent commissioning service at the Methodist Church and the Coffee morning at the Parish Hall.

Our summer season of Travellers Tales starts again on June 19th and runs on consecutive Thursday evenings at 7.45pm up to September 4th. The cost is £3.50 which includes refreshments at the end of the show. All shows are in the United Reformed Church Hall on Kents Bank Road and everyone is welcome.

Churches Together in Grange & District The annual meeting for C. T. in G was held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday, May 1st. Kathy Stancliff was appointed the Chairperson and Frances Limbrey, the Secretary. There were reports from Barrow Food Bank, The Youth Trust, and the representatives were appreciative of all the support. It was mentioned that Father Parker will shortly celebrate 50 years as a Priest, and Rev Nick Ash, 25 years in the ministry. St Peter’s Church, Field Broughton will celebrate a 120 years anniversary.

‘Praise on the Lake’, a joint venture with Ulverston area, will take place on Sunday evening 1st June. There are tickets for sale in all the local churches. Please support this and enjoy a sale, fellowship and a good sing.

St Paul’s enjoyed an extremely successful Spring Fair which was attended by nearly 130 people and raised an amount in excess of £1300 for church funds. Thank you to all those who helped make the last Fair at the Parish Hall such a great success and many thanks to all those who supported the event. Rector Nick Ash is offering a six-week course on the Founding Fathers – Genesis to Deuteronomy on Thursday afternoons from 2.00 – 3.30 pm commencing 5th June to the 10th July in St Paul’s Meeting Room. There will be questions and discussion about people through whom God worked in early Old Testament times. Refreshments will be served and this course is open to all.

As part of Grange’s Edwardian weekend festivities, the Edwardian Songs of Praise service will take place at St Paul’s at 6pm on Sunday, 15th June. Presented by Churches Together in Grange & District this is always a very popular and well-attended service so

On Wednesday, 2nd July from 2 pm to 4 pm we will help Rev’d Canon Nick Ash celebrate 25 years of priesting with a garden party being held in his honour in the rectory garden, there will be refreshments and live music from Charles Edmondson. We hope everyone in our parish will come along to help Nick celebrate this occasion. To book your place, please contact Christine on c.harr45@yahoo.co.uk or Tel: 32013.

Alanna Khadem, from Grange over Sands, has recently attended the United Kingdom’s most important gathering for the Bahá’í Faith. Mrs Khadem was the Cumbrian and West Lancashire representative at the Bahá’í National Convention which took place over 25-27 April 2014 in Wigan.

Nearly 600 Bahá’ís from around the country attended the event. As a delegate, Mrs Khadem was one of the representatives who elected the Bahá’í administrative body for the UK, the National Spiritual Assembly, for the coming year. As with all Bahá’í elections, there are no nominations or canvassing. The election takes place in an atmosphere of thoughtful prayer and reflection to choose the nine people the delegates feel are best qualified to serve on the National Assembly. The gathering also provided an opportunity for the delegates to discuss what has been learned during the past year from the efforts of Bahá’ís throughout the UK to assist individuals of all ages to recognise and develop their spiritual capacities and to become agents of social change in their communities. Inspired by the vision of Bahá’u’lláh, Founder of the Bahá’í Faith, Bahá’ís in all parts of the UK, including Cumbria and West Lancashire, are committed to building vibrant communities in which principles such as the oneness of humankind, the oneness of religion, and the equality of the genders, can be given full and lasting effect. “It was a great honour to represent Cumbria and West Lancashire at this event”, says Mrs Khadem

Grange Methodist Church

St Paul’s Church, Grange

Elizabeth Armstrong hosted a coffee morning house warming at her new flat on Friday, 11th May. There were stalls of bric-a-brac, craft, cakes and groceries.

Cumbria Methodist District have an interest in the work in Togo, and the proceeds were to go to that needy place. Her friend, Glenda Clark helped and together with support, they raised £170. Togo has many orphans, local families take the children in, but they are poor members of society and need help to feed the children.

Cartmel Methodist Church I have to apologise to anyone who was expecting our Church Anniversary on May 18th. Unfortunately it had to be postponed and will now take place on June 8th. We had our first coffee morning of this year on the last Saturday of April. It was a great success with lots of visitors on holiday joining us together with many of our friends from Grange. Financially it was also successful and a sizeable cheque was sent to ALL WE CAN (this being the new name for Methodist Relief and Development Fund). We were also joined by the Cartmel village agent for Age UK, and he will be with us again in June. As the weather improves, more and more visitors are holidaying in the area and some of them find their way to our little, ‘chapel by the river’. It is always a joy to meet old friends, and a pleasure to meet new ones, who we hope will return some time in the future.

St. Charles, Grange

The Easter Vigil Service saw a full Church welcoming Andrew and Stewart into full communion with the Catholic Church. Afterwards, The Father Magner room was the focus for the majority of the congregation as they enjoyed the epicurean delights prepared by the ladies of the parish. It was indeed a fitting close to the Lenten Season and the glorious onset of the Resurrection. Easter Sunday saw a packed Church for the two Masses – extra seats, the porch and the transepts were full. Praise the Lord! I spent my Easter week on Retreat at Mount Saint Mary’s, Spink Hill, where I duly left my coat, complete with car, garage and house keys! Father Sayer with transport, and Kath with keys, came to the rescue and I have since received everything from the matron at Mount St Mary’s – no problems in life – just good helpful people!

Feverish activity goes on around the place – car park, ivy off walls, removal of old store building and greenhouse and building of new storage room. I need to sit down, just thinking about it.

A Parish Quiz Night was thoroughly enjoyed by many. I think our team would have been relegated if there were two quiz leagues.

I have just been given a tour through the new Medical Centre. A fine looking place indeed, except for the 20 yards of broken macadam as you turn down hill from the centre. Spend millions and can’t finish the job. Unbelievable – or is it?!

Along with a parishioner, I again visited the Cor et Lumen Christi community at Wigton. It is very inspiring to share in the input, liturgy, adoration and prayer with this group who depend and survive on providence. If only one had such faith. 24th May sees my celebration of 50 years of priesthood. Where have all the years gone? I thank God for this gift and I pray for the future. The parish will celebrate the event at the usual two Sunday morning Masses on June 1st, followed by a buffet lunch at the St Paul’s Parish Hall. Father Rajkumar will be a welcome visitor to St Charles to make an appeal for the African Missions. I’m sure he will be well received by the parish and I hope he survives my cooking! A prayer to St Jude (for hopeless cases) should do the trick!! Delay on the part of the Council prevents me giving any information concerning the future of St Cuthbert’s. They do say – patience is a virtue – one certainly gets a great opportunity to exercise it when dealing with the Council! Could such a comment mean further delay?!!! More next time. I don’t think the Editor likes my PS’s – he has failed to print the last two months efforts. God Bless. Fr P. P.S: No P.S until P.S arrives after 250 words or less! - Ed

Arts & Music Another Winner for Grange Amateur Operatic Society Congratulations go to 18yr old Molly Hirst after being awarded the trophy from N.O.D.A (National Operatic Drama Association), for the best female comedy part played in a youth theatre production in the North West.

Molly received her award at the ‘glitzy’ presentation night on the 3rd May in Manchester, for her performance as Simple Simon (the comedy lead) in the youth section of Grange Amateur Operatic Society’s (GAOS) production of Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime in December 2013. As a pupil from Queen Elizabeth School - Kirkby Lonsdale, she has played many parts in GAOS and Grange Youth Theatre productions and this was a brilliant end to her time with all the other young performers, before she heads off to University in September.

The society will also be losing 2 other very talented performers this year, as Grace Heap (18yrs old) is off to London to study at the Musical Theatre Academy and Josh Callon (18yrs old) has been offered a place at Liverpool to study Medicine. Young Film Makers’ Festival Monday 19th May, Victoria Hall, Grange, saw the culmination of 5 month’s worth of hard work from budding young filmmakers from the Cartmel Peninsula. In the first event of its kind, Headteachers and teachers from 7 schools in the area, driven by Leven Valley Head, Ian Nicol, came together to create films of up to 2 minutes in length, based on the theme, ‘The Great Outdoors’. There was a very enthusiastic response with 170 children getting involved. Working with Oxen Park Cinema Club, the young film makers submitted for judging 59 films, in which they had scripted, acted, directed and edited. The finale was a showing of all the films in the presence of the film makers, their families and friends, and members of the Cinema Club. Awards were presented to the top films in each of the two categories. In addition, the Kendal Mountain Festival supported the project by providing one of their films to show at the festival. Awards were then

presented by Ian Nicol and judges Loren Slater co-founder of Signal Film and Media and Roger Layfield, amateur film maker and a member of Oxen Park Cinema Club.

The winners are:

Secondary school - ‘Weather in the Lake District’, by Emily, Ellie, Mollie and Chloe-Lee from Cartmel Priory School and the Primary school award went to, ‘The Yeti Hunt’, by Rosa and Isabelle from Leven Valley Primary. All the schools would like to thank the judges and Kendal Mountain Festival, Oxen Park, Haglofs, Open Adventure and National Trust Fellfoot for support and prizes, and a huge well done to everyone who took part. The other judges who voluntarily gave up their time included: Oana Marian, film maker and writer, Tim Fleming local filmmaker and musician, and Rachel Capovila, award winning short-film maker.

Backbarrow, Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge

A

cluster of pretty villages dotted over an area of 4 miles along the River Leven between Newby Bridge and Greenodd. Despite being separated by a dual carriageway, you will find a vibrant community atmosphere. Since the days of the corn mill managed by Cartmel Priory in 1541, the area has become known for the wide range of industries which have operated along the river, all making good use of the available hydropower - when in flood the river can produce in excess of 200hp at Backbarrow. The list is extensive and includes bobbin mills, textile mills, iron smelting furnaces, a paper mill, a fulling mill, a dye works, gunpowder mills, a pyroligneous acid plant, ultramarine pigment factory and ship’s wharves. Other industries in more modern times include blacksmiths, eel traps, basket makers, boom makers timber yards and slate quarries. An area steeped in history from the old dolly blue factory and the gunpowder works and a replica of Donald Campbell’s Bluebird in the Lakeland Motor Museum. (Thanks to Ronald Mein and Richard Sanderson)

I hope you enjoy our feature this month. From local groups to modern business and new housing developments, this is a modern community with ‘a secret past’.

Recent developments in the area The Ironworks

The latest proposal for the development of the Ironworks site, is for a holiday village incorporating some small businesses/craft workshops . It is described as a concept as the ideas are being developed in partnership with the Lake District National Park planners under a partnership planning framework. The public have also been consulted through questionnaires and public meetings. Haverthwaite Parish Council have played a key part in the consultation process. After responses have been analysed there will be further discussions with the National Park and the Development Control Committee. A formal planning application will be put forward, when and if there seems to be a way forward. The main concerns for local residents are for the ancient monument to be preserved but

41444 Southcott Wezzy Ad_41444 Southcott Wezzy Ad 26/04/2013 14:47 Page 2

also for a development to be completed, as the site is seen as an eyesore at the moment.

Low Wood

Recent development at the Low Wood Gunpowder works includes the Clock Tower Business Centre, a historically significant building, sympathetically modernised to provide various sized office accommodation. Within the site, the turbines installed in 1952 utilising the leat and head races from the original gunpowder mills were removed and two new Archimedes screws were installed a couple of years ago to produce hydro-electric power, so interestingly the site has continued to use water power for over 200 years, from water wheels to the most modern system, the reverse Archimedes screws. Perhaps even more fascinating to think that someone who lived between 287-212 B.C. invented something which is still being used today. Many thanks to Sue Sanderson for her contribution

Timber trade businesses George Barker & Sons, of Backbarrow was established in 1858, and have remained in the timber and related trades ever since. Today it is still owned and run by the same family. The family has been very involved in the local community and Grange now is grateful for the

many photos they have shared. Like so many businesses their products have changed with the times, from swilling and basket making to summer houses, garden furniture, spas and much more. The products and manufacturing processes may have altered however the majority of George Barker & Sons timber products are still hand crafted in their workshops in Backbarrow. Playdale Playgrounds Ltd in Haverthwaite dates back to 1735 when the Croasdale family began working in the forestry and allied timber trades. The business has seen many changes over the years before eventually progressing into a playground equipment manufacturer in 1978. Since then Playdale has designed, manufactured and installed over 17,000 playgrounds throughout the UK and in recent years has had great success also in the export market. In 2013 and 2014 Playdale was named as one of UK Trade & Investment’s (UKTI) North West Champions. Playdale now has distributors in 18 countries around the world. Each play equipment from Playdale is still handcrafted in their factory with the same level of expertise, care and precision that has helped Playdale flourish from a small family business into a successful international play equipment exporter.

Lakeland Motor Museum

What a fascinating couple of hours Grange Now spent at the invitation of Lakeland Motor Museum. I was lucky enough to be given a guided tour by the hugely knowledgable and passionate Operations Manager Chris Lowe and all I can say as a first time visitor is - if you haven’t been before then go. I am not a car fan but found the visit full of interest. Not only a fabulous collection of motoring through the ages, starting in 1899 but also a personal trip down memory lane as you are likely to see your first ever car on display. Motorbikes through the ages are on show right up to the John McGuiness’ latest TT winning machines. Classic bikes, toy cars and a fabulous display of Donald Campbell cars and history including a replica of his famous 1935 Bluebird. The attention to details in the sets was superb. From an authentic garage scene to quadrophenia and a sixties cafe, the whole tour is propped with fabulous costumes, sound recordings and memorabilia from the different eras. It all comes together as a really immersive experience. The museum is currently working on a new set to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. There is also a well researched and presented area devoted to the industrial history of the Leven Valley and in particular the site on which the museum is based - the Reckitt’s Blue Dye works, commonly known as the Dolly Blue factory. The Cartmel Township Initiative

Readers will be aware that the Cartmel Township Initiative (CTI) Steering Group was formed last summer, to commission a Study to address infrastructure and economic issues affecting Cartmel. Identified as a

Cartmel Township Initiative Get Involved In Shaping Cartmel’s Future

We are delighted to have been appointed by the Cartmel Township Initiative, led by the Lower Allithwaite Parish Council, to prepare a study to explore solutions of how Cartmel village can be improved. We are a planning and design practice specialising in town and village projects of this type. The initiative will: • Identify improvements which will benefit all those who live, work and visit the village • Be informed by the views of local residents, businesses and other stakeholders • Consider how access and parking could be improved • Identify potential environmental improvements to the village Our study will be informed by the recently approved Lower Allithwaite Community Plan. We would like to hear what people think works well in the village and what could be changed for the better. Amongst the issues that will be considered are: • Do parking arrangements need to change? • How could the Square be improved? • Could access to Cartmel Racecourse car park be rationalised? Ideas and options on potential improvements will be presented later in the 6 month project programme, but please email your initial views directly to us at cartmel@alliesandmorrison.com or leave a note addressed to Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners in the CTI feedback box at the bookshop in Cartmel Priory, ideally before the end of June. All written comments will be passed to the project team. Many thanks and we look forward to hearing from you. Anthony Benson Director

Site locations for the Community Defibrillators Jane Strawbridge, Chair of First Responders, has provided Grange now with a comprehensive list of where the district’s defibrillators are sited. As Jane explains within the article, using the device greatly increases the patient’s chance of survival. The following is a list of places where there is a defibrillator available for community use by members of the public in an emergency. The defibrillators are safe to use by anyone, even without training. The aim of the scheme is for members of the public to be able to assist someone who is having a sudden cardiac arrest. Having a defibrillator available will significantly increase their chance of survival. Ambulance control staff are aware of the locations of each defibrillator and if necessary will inform a caller of the address of the nearest one.

The security boxes have a keypad number, which is retained by the North West Ambulance control department. Following a 999 call for assistance, if the controller suspects that a defibrillator is needed, the caller will be given the number for the keypad to access the nearest security box. We are grateful to the owners of the properties for hosting the defibrillators and supporting the scheme, which has been established for the benefit of our residents and visitors.

Cartmel Grange Centenary Celebrations Cartmel Grange celebrates 100 years of care provision for the local community

Cartmel Grange has been providing care in Grange over Sands for one hundred years this year. It was initially built by the Working Men's Club and Institute Union and for a couple of bob a week you could have recuperation in this marvellous building for up to two weeks a year. When the first foundation stone was laid the First World War had just begun and by the time the building was up and running we cared for soldiers coming back from the war who were members of their local Working Men's Clubs. Following this we went through a period of being known as the miners welfare home because predominantly miners were being injured and needed the convalescence that Cartmel Grange offered.

Throughout the years men came and went and its reputation was far and wide – testimony to some of the plaques that are attached to donations still used from the Working Men's Clubs around the northern part of England. Indeed our soldier statue was a donation from the Normanton Liberal Club which embodies the First World War. During the past nine years or so it has been transformed and upgraded to restore many of the original features and now provides a home with quality furnishings and a first class staff team. We therefore could not let the occasion pass without some form of celebration. We plan to have a garden party with several local craft stalls, music and th entertainment on June 28 from 10am to 4pm. Queens guide to the sands Mr Cedric Robinson MBE and Freeman of Lancaster

will be opening the ceremony and unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion. Other local dignitaries will be in attendance. We will be unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion. ALL money raised will be donated to Bay Search and Rescue. To help us celebrate we would ask that any past staff, residents, relatives and the local community join us and share stories with us of the great history that is Cartmel Grange.

Letters to the Editor Le F ga R EE m 2. l A e 0 0 vi si – d ts 4 v av .0 ic ai 0 e la p b m

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

W e H d o

Dear Editor,

It was nice to see a local fella speaking out and standing up for our local area (Andy Mortimer, May issue), as what he said in his letter was most correct. But it is not only Grange that faces losing its ever decreasing green spaces. Allithwaite, Flookburgh and Cartmel have all been earmarked for unwanted and unneeded housing developments. This is a far cry from local tradesmen building local houses at a natural rate of expansion. Our local communities are about to be railroaded into change, a change for the worse. It’s hard to believe that in this day and age that local opinion is swept aside and ignored, whilst the ill-guided and delusional SLDC, along with some local councillors see fit to use us as an overflow car park. We as locals can see all the problems that will accompany these developments. Why can’t they? Carl Dean, Flookburgh.

Dear Editor,

It could be wise for careful thought to be given before South Lakeland District Council granted planning permission for the land at Trickett’s Field to be used for housing development. It is not a long while ago since a similar application was refused and again turned down at an appeal in Victoria Hall. Could the first applicant make a claim from the Council? In 1961 after a committee was appointed with Sir Parker Morris as chairman ‘to consider the standards of design and equipment applicable to family and other forms of residential accommodation, whether provided by public authorities or by private enterprise, and to make recommendations’, a booklet entitled ‘Homes for today & tomorrow’ was released by the Department of the Environment. These standards were made compulsory for public housing and are far superior to the present ‘shoe box’ houses. Are we now building ‘Slums for today and tomorrow’? Name and Address supplied

Dear Editor,

I was born in Grange in 1936 on Fernleigh Road. When I was 3 we moved to a lovely house on Kents Bank Road adjoining Tricketts Field, then known as ‘Cape’s Field’. The views were outstanding. I just can’t believe that there is an application to build 68 dwellings in this lovely field which will mean cutting down some of the lime trees, which I’m sure have a preservation order on them, to enable cars etc to get in and out of the site. In 1946 we moved from this house to a house on Thornfield Road, as my Mother said there was too much traffic noise on the road outside our house!!! About 20 years ago planning permission to build on this site was refused mainly because of the traffic problem. Since then traffic flow has vastly increased on this bit of road so surely the present application should be refused on these grounds. Mr Jopling was the MP then and fought with the residents against the plan. The people who want this building to go ahead probably don’t live in Grange or know anything about Grange and it won’t be Grange residents who eventually live in these houses! I hope the people of Grange will all get together and stop the ruination of a once lovely town. Yours faithfully, Valerie A Jones, address supplied P.S My father (Eric Gunning) was the Publicity Officer for Grange all his working life (writing Guide Books etc). He must be turning in his grave at what is going on!

LEGAL TALK Promises, Promises

Inheritance Tax Planning is alive and well. David Cameron has said he will increase the IHT limit to £1m. But we have heard that one before and there was an election just around the corner then too. Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning is not as much of an issue as it used to be for most of our clients. Since October 2007, widow/ers can automatically carry over the Nil Rate Band Allowance (currently £325,000) from their late spouse, provided it was not used when they died. So the total IHT threshold for most married couples is £650,000. If John dies and leaves all of his assets to his wife, Mary, then on her death, she will have the full £650,000 available. If John dies and uses some or all of his own Nil Rate Band, say by giving gifts to their children, the Transferable Nil Rate Band (TNRB) that Mary gets is reduced by a percentage on her death. So one easy bit of planning is for John to leave everything to Mary and for her then to make the agreed gifts to the children. She then gets the full TNRB and if she survives 7 years they have escaped IHT on the gifts. If John does not trust Mary to do this but wants the extra tax saving, he can use a trust to achieve the same result. The old style planning was to use or lose the Nil Rate Band on first death but this is no longer needed unless either John or Mary have been widowed previously, which gives them the chance of an extra TNRB that they need to use or lose. If they have been unlucky enough to both have been widowed previously then proper planning can get them 4 Nil Rate Bands, meaning they can leave £1.3m without paying any IHT. Trust arrangements can still be used for more IHT planning and have other uses in protecting assets from predators like the tax man, debtors, silly behaviour by vulnerable beneficiaries, the cost of long term care and to an extent, divorce. So just because Dave has made a promise he might not keep, don’t put off seeing an expert to sort out your IHT planning. It is as interesting as it is controversial and,of course, it keeps me occupied and my mind active.” Born in London in 1939, Mr Dadson had an illustrious career in engineering and was a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers and gained an HNC in the 1950’s. It was partly this qualification that led him to enquire if his qualification was recognised as a degree today and it would have been, had he sat it after 1967. Undeterred, he decided to study anyway and since the death of his lovely wife, Rae, he found he had a lot of time on his hands, and as he told us, “studying educates, stimulates and motivates the mind and is a great way to spend retirement.”

Mr Dadson told us that he has led, “a wonderful life.” He has travelled all over Europe, been very well respected in his profession and is also a Master Yachtsman. Many have called him, ‘inspirational’, in achieving so much at his time life but he responds, “you’re never too old to learn”.
