RABBI’S COLUMN The hardest thing about Passover is not schlepping the dishes. It is not finding crumbs constantly RABBI DEBI WECHSLER underfoot. The hardest thing about Passover is not the food bill (though it is always shocking), or squeezing yet another chair around the table. The hardest thing about Passover is the imagination required. We are asked to engage in a great imaginative feat on Passover. Imagine that you have not been enslaved for 430 years. Imagine instead that you are a free person. Try to think of how a free person would eat and drink, how a free person would prepare food and tuck some away for a long journey. Imagine that you are not walking through a wilderness but that you are living in the place you have always wanted to live. Imagine what you would feel like if you were able to transform your life. We are adults and imagination has not come easily to us since we were children. Or at least constructive, positive imagining has not. Instead it has been “catastrophizing”, imagining the worst possible outcome for ourselves, our children, our community. Passover asks us to do exactly the opposite. Imagine the best possible outcomes for ourselves, our children and our community. Continued on Page 2

KAVANNOT FOR PASSOVER

A sacred community prepares individually and collectively for significant moments on our Jewish calendar. One of the ways we prepare, is by bringing to mind evocative experiences in our Jewish past and hopes for our Jewish future. Several years ago we began a tradition of kavannot which was much beloved by the congregation. A kavannah is intended to be a highly personal short essay. These kavannot will be shared with the congregation by email and social media during the week before Passover.

POT KASHERING

March 26, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Members of the synagogue and its schools are invited to kasher certain types of metal flatware and cookware by a method of boiling called hag’alah. Rabbi Wechsler will assist you in this annual preparation for Pesah. RSVP to Judy Simkin at 410-486-6400 x.232

From Page 1

At the end of the central portion of the Hagaddah, what we call Maggid, we read the famous instruction that “In every generation each person is obligated to imagine oneself as if he or she had taken a personal journey out of Egypt.” We hold aloft a cup of wine, and we imagine what we might be like if we went from slavery to freedom, from misery to joy, from mourning to celebration, from darkness to great light, from enslavement to redemption. Passover is a time to challenge ourselves with questions that begin with - What If. We are given permission, actually we are commanded, to discard our existing assumptions with an invitation to imagine a different kind of future. What if you weren’t rooted to the physical location in which you find yourself? What if you had all of the resources in the world? What if you were free to choose the future you desired? Forget the dishes and the chairs and the crumbs. This is the hardest part of Passover – imagining a different future. Hag Sameyach!

Thanks to the technologies that gave rise to the World Wide Web, GPS, and Facebook, Jewish communities are more connected than ever before – to each other, and to the broader world. How has access to all this technology challenged some aspects of traditional Jewish life, and at the same time opened doors to new opportunities for the Jewish community? We will explore these questions through a variety of contemporary examples: What are the Jewish politics of a “cyber-minyan,” and who benefits from participating in services that are streamed online? Is there a downside to our increasing reliance on “smart” devices? How are tools like GPS and online archives being used to document, preserve and provide access to vital information about Jewish communities into the future? HAZZAN SEARCH UPDATE I want to share a general overview of our process regarding our search for our next Hazzan, as well as our interim plan. As you are aware, Hazzan Perlman will be concluding his tenure as Hazzan of Chizuk Amuno on July 31, 2018. The Hazzan has graciously agreed to be with us for the Haggim and additional select opportunities through June of 2019. Therefore, we will be engaging an additional Hazzan for the next year, August of 2018 through June of 2019, to meet the spiritual, cantorial and pastoral needs of our families. The specific duties of the interim Hazzan are currently being evaluated, so as to enhance our services and coordinate with the limited role of Hazzan Perlman. I have been in communication with the Cantors Assembly and will continue those conversations. Once we begin the formal search process, I am pleased to share that Antony Rosen and Jenny Gamliel will be leading the effort. Antony and Jenny are engaged lay leaders within Chizuk Amuno and have been active participants for many years. Their understanding of our community and desire to bring people together will serve us well. In the Spring, a Committee will be formed, and the Committee will begin by reviewing the vast information that you, our dedicated members of Chizuk Amuno, have shared during our rabbinic search, which includes many conversations regarding the future role of the Hazzan, music and how to meet the needs of our changing community. I thank you in advance for your support as we continue our Jewish journey together. B’Shalom.

SAVE THE DATE! YOM HASHOAH COMMEMORATION

VERDI REQUIEM

Sunday, April 15 at 4 p.m. | Chizuk Amuno Congregation On Sunday, April 15, at 4:00 p.m., Chizuk Amuno will host Baltimore’s community-wide Holocaust Remembrance event. The highlight will be a performance of Verdi’s Requiem by the Bach in Baltimore Chorus and Orchestra, and the Morgan State University Choir, conducted by our very own T. Herbert Dimmock. For those lucky enough to have experienced Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Chizuk Amuno 5 years ago, you will have a sense of the power and beauty Herb can bring with more than 200 musicians on the bimah and overflowing into the balconies of our sanctuary. Entitled A Tribute to the Human Spirit, this program honors the resilience of Jewish prisoners at Terezin during WW II. Verdi’s Requiem was performed 16 times at the camp during the Holocaust. While singing this stirring music, prisoners at Terezin were able to soar above the degradation of slave labor and Nazi oppression, and reassert their humanity. In the words of a survivor of the camp, “music made us strong.” It was “a fight for life” and a way to sustain hope and courage. A Tribute to the Human Spirit: Verdi’s Requiem is our chance to honor the singers in the Terezin concentration camp, and others who suffered in the Holocaust, as they wished to be remembered - not as degraded, but as whole, free to affirm their dignity and humanity through the beauty of music and the arts. This special commemoration is co-sponsored by the Baltimore Jewish Council, The Associated, and the Jewish Museum of Maryland. Along with the concert, displays are planned to document the history. Admission to A Tribute to the Human Spirit: Verdi’s Requiem is FREE, but tickets are required. As this special Yom HaShoah commemoration is open to the entire community we expect to completely fill the sanctuary. Tickets are available now! Be sure to get yours early! Tickets are also available in the Chizuk Amuno Synagogue front office. If you register online, there is a $1.25 handling fee at BachinBaltimore.org or by calling 410-941-9262. Also In conjunction with Yom HaShoah, Chizuk Amuno will be showing the movie “Defiant Requiem,” on Wednesday, April 11, at 7:00 p.m. This feature-length documentary film describes the history of the Verdi Requiem performances at Terezin during the Holocaust. We are honored that the director of the Defiant Requiem Foundation, Murry Sidlin, will be present at this screening and will lead a discussion following the film. The film viewing is FREE and tickets are not required.

HAZAK LUNCH PROGRAM TO FEATURE RABBI MICHAEL MEYERSTEIN

HOLOCAUST LETTERS TO MY FATHER FINALLY REVEALED Following Kristallnacht, Michael’s father, Ralph, left his family in Dusseldorf, Germany, and made his way to London, where he lived during WWII. Until November 7, 1941, Ralph’s parents sent him letters (400 handwritten pages in total!) that described the worsening situation for the Jewish community. On November 9, Ralph’s parents were deported to the Minsk ghetto, where they were murdered. Through these letters, Michael was introduced to his grandparents ‘ persona. He also gained insight into the guilt that haunted his own parents, even as they sought to rebuild their lives in America. Chizuk Amuno invites our seniors to gather their wisdom and maturity and join us as we chart the future together. Hazak will meet for lunch and program on the last Thursday of the month. The next lunch/program will be on Thursday, March 22 at 11:30 a.m. Lunch is $10. Please RSVP to Doris in the Stulman Center office – 410-486-6400, x-288.

613 & ME

Thirteen father son pairs and eleven mother daughter pairs spent two Sundays going “Beneath the Surface” of Bar and Bat Mitzvah. We explored ritual, talked about what it means to become a Jewish man, recalled when or if we became Bat Mitzvah decades ago, shared hopes for what it might mean for our children to achieve this milestone, and played some father son basketball and did some mother daughter art projects. Our parents and children were grateful for the opportunity to have meaningful discussions about their Jewish lives and Jewish family memories as they prepare to make their own Jewish memories.

WAYDE SMITH - 25 YEARS AT CHIZUK AMUNO’S ARLINGTON CEMETERY

Wayde Smith has been digging grave-sites and preparing for burials at Chizuk Amuno’s Arlington Cemetery since January 1993. Prior to working at Arlington, Wayde worked for a moving company. His mom found our cemetery ad in the paper and encouraged him to apply. At the time he was only 1 of 4 people who worked there, and a few of the workers even lived in the cemetery property house. He mentioned that while digging, he has found several unusual items such as old tires, a box-spring, and road signs. Chizuk Amuno founded and developed Arlington Cemetery in the late 1940’s.

“After so many years Wayde certainly knows all and sees all at Arlington Cemetery. He has an easy going manner, yet is most capable of performing his required caretaker duties. All who come into the cemetery remark how respectful and helpful he is when asked to locate a grave or answer a question. His expertise is greatly appreciated and makes my job much easier. Thanks and Congratulations, Wayde! “ - Marsha Yoffe, Cemetery Director Page 5

HAVDALAH IN PJ’S - Under the Stars

Shavuah Tov, a good week! More than 100 children, parents and grandparents came together to celebrate Havdalah in our Pajamas on February 10. Our Rosh Shirah, Sam joined us with his guitar as we sang goodbye to Shabbat. We participated in a child-friendly Havdalah under the stars. We used our senses to welcome the new week. First we drank the wine, then we smelled the spices and then we saw the light of the Havdalah candle. Each child had an opportunity to decorate their own Kiddush cup. What a better way to end the night then eating star cookies and milk. This program was sponsored by Goldsmith Early Childhood Center, Young Families of Chizuk Amuno, and The Meta and Ernst Oppenheimer Fund.

ENGAGE WITH OUR SCHOOLS

ROSENBLOOM RELIGIOUS SCHOOL WELCOME HOME ACHSHAV!

DISCIPLES OF BETZALEL The connection between Judaism and the arts is not a modern invention. God was the first to appoint an artisan to oversee the building of the Mishkan (the portable sanctuary in the desert). God singled out Betzalel and endowed him with a divine spirit of skill, ability, and knowledge in every kind of craft. He assigned Oholiab to be Betzalel’s assistant and granted talent to a whole bunch of apprentices to make the various furnishings of God’s home in the desert. They made designs, cut stones, carved wood, and weaved and embroidered. At Rosenbloom Religious School, every student has a chance to become a disciple of Betzalel. Under the guidance of Brina Pintzuk and other guest artists our students have created their very own ritual objects.

The 10th grade Beth El/Chizuk Amuno Achshav class returned from an amazing 10-day trip to Israel during their winter break. After years of learning about Israel in their religious school and Achshav classes, the students came on the trip ready to make the most of the experience led by Rabbi Seltzer and Erica Allen. They hiked, prayed, swam, studied, and explored. They made new friends, practiced their Hebrew, and discovered deep connections to their history and sacred texts. Most importantly, they asked great questions and inspired each other to take full advantage of every moment of the trip. The students returned excited, engaged, and thankful for such a meaningful (and fun!) experience. In their words: “On the trip I made incredible memories that I will never forget.” - Jessica K. “I have a connection to Israel that I never felt before I experienced it first-hand.” - Arenal H. “The trip enhanced my learning at Achshav by understanding the Jewish leaders we study in a more meaningful way. The trip strengthened my Jewish identity. “- Jessica L. “I will always remember my amazing experience...I can’t wait to go back and show my family where I made so many memories.” - Hannah S. “I can’t express fully in words how meaningful and amazing this experience was.” - Danielle G. “The trip strengthened my Jewish identity by having festive Shabbats, visiting the Kotel, learning how to incorporate Judaism in my everyday life, and so much more. “- Sara B. “This trip has really helped me connect to Judaism even more than I already do. “- Olivia C. “This trip really inspired me to keep going with my Jewish learning at Hebrew school.” - Aaron S. “It was an experience of a lifetime and I will never forget. As a 1st time traveler in Israel I was struck by Jerusalem and the Western Wall. Was I really at this place where everyone prays to?” - Daisy O. We are grateful to The Charles Crane Family Foundation for supporting the Achshav: Leadership Now Program.

In preparation for their Havdalah Service, our 3rd grade students created spice boxes, decorated Kiddush cups, and made candles by dipping wicks into wax. Our 5th and 6th grade students made their own special Torah pointers with their grandparents to use when they read from the Torah. Elbert Hubbart said that “Art is not a thing; it is a way.” At Rosenbloom Religious School, “art” is something to live; it is a way of learning and a way of looking at the world. Our students use “art” to connect their experiences, emotions, and feelings with their study of Torah. This semester, Ms. Pintzuk helped our 4th through 7th seventh grade students create “visual midrashim” to express their ideas about God’s covenant with Abraham, the burning bush, the actions of Jonah, and the characters in the Story of Esther. When our students go to art, Ms. Pintzuk encourages them to pause, to notice more carefully, and to create; reflecting their own individuality, creativity and understanding. Betzalel reminds us that the artistic experience of creating is important or maybe even necessary for performing ritual acts and understanding the Torah. Page 7

This is the tenth time a team of Chizuk Amuno volunteers has gathered to prepare barbeque chicken and rice to be served at Our Daily Bread. The group is very dedicated and enthusiastic; and there’s always a lot of laughter. Under the leadership of Chef Annie, they washed, plucked, and massaged sauce into over 725 pounds of chicken. Volunteers baked chicken in both the Stulman and Krieger kitchens, lined it up outside to cool, and loaded the van for delivery. During the cooling period, participants also scrubbed down the kitchen so as not to leave a hint of the evening’s major undertaking. Halfway through the event, Rabbi Wechsler led us in a game of Hangman as an introduction to a lesson about the four mitzvot of Purim, which was perfectly timed for the upcoming holiday. Special thanks go to Marvin Spector for working behind the scenes to make sure everything was in order. We express our gratitude to Myra and Michael Gershen for their support of this project through the Louis Barry Gershen “Our Daily Bread” Fund.

Friday, May 18 We hope you’ll join us at this Erev Shabbat service when we thank the hundreds of dedicated volunteers for their hours of service in support of our programs these past two years. More details to follow.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

EACH ONE REACH ONE As spring and summer arrive, our calls from prospective members increase as new families move into the community. In order to warmly invite and welcome new members into our congregational family, we encourage our members to reach out to new neighbors, business associates, relatives, and friends to join the Chizuk Amuno family. “If each Chizuk Amuno member would reach out to one new arrival to Baltimore, we would be able to expand our membership and sustain our wonderful congregation,” explains Neil Leikach, Membership VP. “We need ‘each one to reach one’ to share the meaning and excitement of belonging to our sacred congregation,” concludes Neil. Please forward names and contact information of prospective members to Neil, Allison Baumwald, or Glenn Easton at the synagogue office. Help us grow our congregational family with our “Each One Reach One” membership campaign.
