AT CHIZUK AMUNO CONGREGATION AND SCHOOLS Engaging Jewish Life & Learning FEBRUARY 2018 | Shevat / Adar 5778

RABBI’S COLUMN Are you ready for the Four Questions? Not “those” Four Questions but the Four Questions RABBI DEBI WECHSLER BEFORE the Four Questions. Judaism is always looking to give our moments and our days new meaning beyond the ordinary day-to-day routine. One of the ways in which it does that is by taking what would otherwise be just another weekend and giving it a special name and special character. For four (pun intended) Sabbaths leading up to Passover, our tradition highlights four different aspects of our lives. It does this through special Sabbaths, each with its own name, its own context, its own scriptural reading, and its own question or set of questions. On February 10th this year we will mark Shabbat Shekalim, the Sabbath of the census when each Israelite was asked to contribute a half shekel to be counted and to help with the upkeep of the Tent of Meeting. On that Shabbat we will ask ourselves: 1.) How do I participate in the upkeep of my synagogue community so that I might be “counted”? On February 24th we mark one of my favorite special Sabbaths (it was the Maftir reading at my Bat Mitzvah) Shabbat Zachor, the Sabbath of memory when we are commanded to remember and then act upon our Continued on Page 2

personal and communal history. On that Shabbat we will ask ourselves: 2.) What are the Jewish memories that resonate for me personally or as part of our Jewish community? On March 10th we mark Shabbat Parah, the mysterious Sabbath of the Red Heifer. It speaks of enigmatic ancient rituals that aim to bring individuals closer to a spiritual encounter with the Divine. On that Shabbat we will ask ourselves: 3.) Where is the “magic” in our Jewish lives that brings a sense of the spiritual to us? And finally on March 17th we celebrate Shabbat Ha Hodesh, the Sabbath of the new month when we read of the establishment of the Jewish calendar. Shabbat Ha Hodesh reminds us of the unique Jewish cadence of our days and weeks. On that Shabbat we will ask ourselves: 4.) What are our favorite Jewish days and how do they bring meaning to our lives? Let us encounter these Four Questions so that we might soon be ready for the next Four Questions and others too.

CHIZUK AMUNO RABBINIC TRANSITION Magnify your engagement RABBINIC CANDIDATE VISIT MEET RABBI JOSHUA GRUENBERG Dear Friends, Our Rabbinic Search Process is now entering an exciting new phase. Our committee has received and reviewed multiple applications from Senior Rabbi candidates. We have conducted online video interviews of those who qualify for our position, and have had on-site, in-person interview days with the most promising candidates. Now, it’s your turn to get involved. We have invited Rabbi Joshua Z. Gruenberg, currently the Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth El of Bucks County, in Yardley PA for an extended weekend visit with our community from February 8 -11. This will be a valuable opportunity for our congregation to engage with Rabbi Gruenberg and for him to learn more about us. There will be a number of opportunities for you to meet Rabbi Gruenberg and to participate as he teaches and preaches at Chizuk Amuno. This will include participation in Shabbat services, minyan, and in our schools. There will also be a congregational Question and Answer session. A detailed schedule will be shared with you by mail and email and also is available on our website: chizukamuno.org/rabbinictransition. It is extremely important that you participate in weekend activities to the full extent that you can. Your input and feedback will be critical in helping us come to a decision on whom we invite to be our next Senior Rabbi. This will be the first of potentially two or more extended weekend visits of Rabbi Candidates. Assuming we find a superlative candidate worthy of Chizuk Amuno, our goal is to have a new Senior Rabbi in place by July 1, 2018. If such a candidate does not emerge, we will continue our search process. Thank you so much for your continued active participation in and support of our beloved congregation.

RETROFITTING FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Our House, Grounds, & Security Committee are in the midst of a project to retrofit many of the internal and external lighting fixtures to reduce our energy usage and costs and increase efficient lighting to improve evening security surveillance. Under the leadership of committee chair, Howard Brill, we recently replaced the parking lot and exterior lighting with high efficient LED fixtures. You may have noticed the north parking lot lights brighten as you approach them and your cars in the evenings taking advantage of motion detectors built into the fixtures. Lighting around the perimeter of the building is also being replaced with energy and cost saving fixtures. Internally, the committee is working on a complete retrofit of classroom and office lighting fixtures to improve our lighting, continue our energy efficiency program, and reduce costs. “Utilizing a combination of energy company rebates, security grant funding, and synagogue investment, we are able to increase our security capabilities and reduce our energy usage and costs,” explains Howard Brill. “Our annual utility bills average over $250,000 per year so any savings we realize can be reallocated towards our schools, scholarships, programs, and services,” concludes Brill. Our thanks to the House, Grounds, & Security Committee, along with our synagogue staff for spearheading this important project.

Herbert Dimmock will conduct 220 musicians, including 2 choirs and a full orchestra, in a performance of the Verdi Requiem. During WWII, the Verdi Requiem was sung at the Terezin Concentration Camp by Jewish prisoners as an act of defiance, to affirm their dignity and humanity in the face of Nazi persecution. The performance on April 15 will focus on that historical aspect of the piece. This stirring and dramatic musical presentation will be co-sponsored by the Baltimore Jewish Council, the Jewish Museum of Maryland and the ASSOCIATED as the official Yom HaShoah commemoration for our community. To ensure that everyone can attend this memorable community-wide observance, admission is free.

CAMP RAMAH SCHOLARSHIPS

This program is funded for the 2017-2018 year by the Zaiman Education Alliance.

Israeli snacks and popcorn will be served. Fee $5. We are delighted that so many members of our congregation choose to send their children to Camp Ramah. Chizuk Amuno would like to support our Ramah families and to make it affordable for as many of our families as possible to choose a Ramah summer. We have seen an increase in the number of families sending children to Ramah and we have also seen a corresponding increase in the number of families requesting financial assistance. Thankfully a variety of Chizuk Amuno and Ramah Scholarship funds, including the Kahan Trust Fund, the Camp Ramah Trust Fund, the Jared Levy endowment Fund, the Goldner Ramah endowment Fund, and the Siegel Ramah endowment Fund, provide some funding. We are grateful to those individuals and groups, including the Sisterhood and Brotherhood who donate to these funds. There is a brief form that we ask parents to fill out and return to us. You should use this one form even if you have multiple children for whom you are requesting assistance. You can find the Application for Camp Ramah Scholarship Award on our website at tinyurl.com/ramah-application. Please feel free to be in touch with Rabbi Wechsler if you have any questions.

Please also consider making a donation to any of these funds and help make a Ramah summer possible for our children and teens.

First century CE Judaism is often described as a highly sectarian reality. Historical and archaeological studies over the last half-century reveal multiple “Judaisms.” After the chaos following the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem (70 CE), two major sects sought to establish their religious identities. This course explores the complicated and messy process known as the “partings” of the ways. How has access to all this technology challenged some aspects of traditional Jewish life, and at the same time opened doors to new opportunities for the Jewish community? We will explore these questions through a variety of contemporary examples: What are the Jewish politics of a “cyber-minyan,” and who benefits from participating in services that are streamed online? Is there a downside to our increasing reliance on “smart” devices? How are tools like GPS and online archives being used to document, preserve and provide access to vital information about Jewish communities into the future? To register contact Doris Tanhoff, dtanhoff@chizukamuno.org or call 410-486-6400, x-288.

ROSENBLOOM RELIGIOUS SCHOOL AND THE MARYLAND SCIENCE CENTER INSPIRE OUR SECOND GRADE STUDENTS TO REACH FOR THE STARS

Our Kochavim students with Jim O’Leary who coordinated the program.

Our Kochavim students with their parents, grandparent or older sibling.

Our second grade students are called Kochavim (Stars) because they study the Jewish calendar and the revolving cycle of the Jewish year. On January 9, our Kochavim students and their parents traveled to the Maryland Science Center to “land on the moon.” Their first stop was the planetarium for a show which the Science Center designed in collaboration with Rosenbloom Religious School. The families learned about the moon’s phases and its topography. They discussed the importance of the moon in establishing the Jewish calendar. Then, the students created “moon computers” while Rabbi Ariel Greenberg taught their parents the significance of the moon in Jewish life. On the bus ride students participated in the “Oreo Cookie Moon Phase Challenge.” Melissa Berman challenged them to recreate each moon phase in cookies and frosting, and then snack on the results. Back at school, the students will learn about their Hebrew birthdays and how they can celebrate them at home. Happy Birthday to all of our Kochavim students!

They also contributed towards Camp Ramah Scholarships and KSDS Scholarships, and the Religious School Special Needs program. In addition to supporting our congregation and schools, our Sisterhood raises funds through Torah Fund, chaired by Joy Katz, to support the Jewish Theological Seminary. Our Sisterhood raises these funds through the Sisterhood Judaica Shop, led by Anne King and Dixie Leikach, through the sales of Purim Hamantashen, through Sisterhood Dues, and fundraising programs. By supporting our Sisterhood you are supporting our congregation and schools. If you’d like to help with Sisterhood and these efforts, send in your donation, attention Sisterhood, 8100 Stevenson Rd., Baltimore, MD 21208. To receive the weekly Sisterhood e-newsletter, email Ruth Silber, Sisterhood President at Sisterhood@chizukamuno.org.
