News Age UK giving its full support to New coalition to build homes that work for everyone An enhanced standard of home with increased accessibility provides new housing opportunities for older people. There’s a clear cross-party consensus that we must build more homes to get to grips with a housing crisis that’s continuing to damage the lives of both younger and older people trying to find somewhere decent and affordable to live. So it’s an encouraging sign that the latest house building figures show 241,130 homes were built in 2018-19, although some of this involved the conversion of existing buildings. Although we can generally agree that building more homes is a good thing, it still matters that we build the right homes in the right places offering real housing choices for everyone, especially those who are in the rental market. Most pressingly we need more new council and housing association housing to reduce the numbers forced to live in insecure non-decent housing in the private rented sector, and to reverse the huge increase in homelessness. Tackling homelessness The official statistics show that older people accepted by local authorities as homeless increased from 1,800 in 2012/13 to 2,500 in 2017/18 (although these figures don’t really show the true extent of the problem). We may welcome an increase in the overall supply of new homes but many more of them need to offer a lower affordable rent and all of them need to be accessible and adaptable for current and future generations of older people and those with disabilities. Age UK gives its backing That’s why Age UK is giving its full support to a powerful new coalition of organisations, led by Habinteg Housing Association and the Centre for Ageing Better. The coalition named HoME (Housing Made for Everyone) is calling for all new homes to be built to a higher ‘lifetime home’ accessibility standards 6

Your Time | Winter 2019/20

- alongside an increase in the supply of wheelchair accessible housing. We saw some progress on this issue when the Government introduced a new ‘optional’ accessibility standard (based on the lifetime homes standard) into the building regulations in 2015. However, this standard doesn’t apply to all newly built homes as the ‘default’ position. Despite this, the enhanced standard was in fact successfully adopted in London and supported by the current Prime Minster, Boris Johnson, when he was Mayor. (Recently it has also been adopted by Brighton and Hove and Sheffield councils.) Home truths In our factsheet Home Truths (available online at www.ageuk.org.uk), Age UK and Habinteg challenge the myths that have blocked improvements in home accessibility standards. It examines the evidence that shows reform would be relatively inexpensive

— and but at the same time could result in major savings for the NHS and social care system. The HoME campaign launched at a critical time when the Government was considering major reforms as part of its ‘Future Homes initiative’. Whatever Government we have after the General Election — it seems likely that modern standards for newly built homes will continue to be an issue. It is right that the Government and local authorities give priority to how newly built homes (like the award-winning new council homes in Norwich) can help tackle climate change and address fuel poverty. But our ageing population means we must also prioritise homes that are accessible and adaptable for older and disabled people. Support the HoME coalition so that new homes work for all generations and allow more of us to remain independent and in control of our lives as we get older.

Running For Fun Did you know that an 85-year-old man was the oldest runner in 2019’s London Marathon? Maybe you’re not quite ready for a 26-miler – yet! But running for fun is a great way to get and keep fit. Plus, the real joy of jogging is that it can be done anywhere and at any time. And it’s free! Running gets you out into the fresh air, seeing the sights and enjoying the elements. Come rain or shine, there’s no excuse not to get out there and get those happy hormones flowing. Volunteering If you’re retired do you sometimes wonder how you ever found the time to go to work? Or if you currently have a job, do you find yourself telling colleagues you’ve come to work for a rest? Our lives are so busy that these can be common sentiments. Sorting out your various insurance policies is probably not the highlight of your day. Once we have taken out cover on our cars, contents, and so on, that tends to be that for another year. You have worked hard for your money, and you deserve to get the most from it, so here’s a tip; even if you want to stay with your present insurer (because they have served you well previously, for example, or the cost of your renewal is reasonable and so is acceptable to you), don’t let them automatically take your payment when the time comes. RING THEM! Simply give them a quick call and ask if this is the best price they can possibly give you. Can they offer you a better deal? Even if you are almost certain you have received something official, there is no harm in taking a few minutes to make sure, and become absolutely certain. Here is a great piece of advice from moneysavingexpert. com: ‘Mistaking the genuine for a scam is nowhere near as bad as mistaking a scam for the genuine.’ If the company contacting you is for real, they will not mind you getting back in touch with them after you have done a bit of digging. They will probably be used to this! If someone does raise objections, this is a good indication they are scammers. Don’t feel you are being rude by questioning anyone’s validity – you are being sensible. Always trust your instincts. Some scams are pretty easy to spot, some are not. Maybe you have a fireplace that’s never been used as anything other than a home for flower arrangements or as a storage space? A fully qualified and experienced chimney sweep could help you bring an unused or unloved open fire back to life. Builders can rip out old fireplaces ready for replacements or can remove layers to discover old ones that have been covered over the years. Suppliers can provide beautiful fireplaces to suit every sitting room, and many stores have a great selection of fireside accessories. So, whenever you have to face the great outdoors this season, snuggle up in your winter coat and boots, and look forward to coming back home again and getting those logs glowing.

Building Projects

Home &Garden

Do you have a particular project in mind? A room that needs revamping? A place that needs tidying or a new space that needs creating? Be it indoor renovations, outside repairs and improvements, or landscaping overhauls, now is your time to enjoy getting it done. First impressions count, so let’s look at ‘kerb appeal’. A welcoming walk up to your front door will make you even gladder to get back to your home sweet home. Now is the ideal opportunity to get the front garden spruced up or have the drive relaid, repaired or replaced. Having weeds removed and paving cleaned will make an outside surface sparkle. Adding a new door, or even a porch, will really pick up your front entrance. Inside your house, new carpets or other types of flooring can totally transform a room or communal area. Auto-Biographies

Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2018 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. Tweeting @carwriteups The A-Class has become sexier with each incarnation – and 2018’s Mk4 is a car oozing desirability.

I

t’s a classy hatch with one diesel option – the A180d. Then there are the A200 and A250 petrols. All are offered with a seven-speed dualclutch auto. But, from 2019, manuals and more powerful engines will join the party. The A250 I’m reviewing here gets your juices flowing tastefully. It’s got a bit of ‘oomph’ to it – as you’d expect from a car with a 224PS 2.0-litre lump under the lid. Inside, you feel like a King, with a digital set-up that you’d expect to find in a chauffeur driven luxury limo. The brand’s clever ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control responds well to pretty much anything you ask of it. Additionally, although the Audi A3 trumps the A-Class on rear seat space, comfort is better than that offered by the rival.

The seating and dash materials are marginally better, too – and that takes some doing. Indeed, I’d go as far to say that this Mercedes-Benz has set the bar one notch higher in the compact class. On the move, the sporty sound the new A-Class makes is gratifying, and it’s always eager to please – especially in ‘Sport’ mode. But the hatchback delivers a calmer experience in ‘Comfort’ setting, soothing the parts that some other compact cars fail to reach. The auto ‘box can sound a bit strained when you give the Merc the beans, but most of the time it’s a smooth operator. What’s more, the shift paddles on the steering wheel - if you want to use them - are highly responsive.

As handling and ride go, this small Mercedes is perfect for everyday motoring needs. I drove it on motorways and rural roads and felt satisfied all day. Even the potholes on the Cotswolds’ test route didn’t rain on the parade. The A-Class handled them with aplomb. The car holds its own at 70mph, and there’s quite a bit of fun to be had when you point it at twisty tarmac. The front-wheel-drive Merc hunkers down, relaxes and then pings you out of the bends accurately and pleasingly. All this makes it an easy hatchback to like. So, if sexy looks, a charming cabin, great handling and a premium-badged hatch float your boat, then the new A-Class comes highly recommended.
