to the December issue!

H

ow quickly everything changes, last month I was full of excitement to be back in the office and now I am back working from home. The good news is we are continuing with the magazine for as long as residents and businesses want/need us so there will be no break in print. But this does leave me with a struggle as what to write for my welcome, normally December is full of festive fun and cheer but currently we are not sure what the guidelines will be for the Christmas period this year. What I do know is that we can all still enjoy the

time with those closest to us; in some ways I am relishing the thought of a simpler Christmas, one where I am not racing around at a million miles an hour in the run up to the day, one where I can sit and enjoy the time with my family playing games & watching them enjoy their presents rather than being ‘hostess with the mostess.’ Like all celebrations it has become more commercialised – I actively have to avoid places with Santa’s to avoid questions from my son on a normal year!! It may actually be a blessing in disguise that we can all take time and recharge after what has

Your Local Community

been a challenging year for us all. Whatever you choose to do this Christmas or we are allowed to do please think of those on their own – check in with friends and neighbours who may be struggling. I hope your celebrations are filled with love, laughter and lots of fun. Finally, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue, stay safe and see you next month!

Council extends support for South Holland Market traders with free period until April 2021

S

outh Holland District Council’s Cabinet has today announced a further four month extension to the waiving of market fees for new and existing traders, stretching their ongoing support following lockdown to ten months. The decision, which ensures no fees for traders until the end of March, will support the Council’s ongoing commitment to the District’s town centres, and provide further time for existing traders to recover from the impact of COVID and the numerous new traders who have joined in recent months to further establish themselves and their businesses in the District. Across South Holland’s markets

numerous new businesses have taken advantage of the present lowrisk opportunity to give it a try for the first time, with positive feedback about their experiences trading and also from customers pleased with the increased options and range of products available to buy. As well as the extended period without fees, existing traders also received a £5,000 grant in August, targeted by the Council through the discretionary grant funding from the Government. The market is also a crucial component of the Council’s ongoing work with the Spalding town centre improvement group, which includes representatives from the Spalding Market Traders group. Along with the decision on fees,

Lincolnshire County Council’s highways team have confirmed that the Friday road closures to allow Long Sutton market to take place in its new location, which has been well received by traders and customers, will be extended until at least January 2022. Councillor Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for environmental services, said: “I am really pleased that Cabinet has agreed to extend the free period for traders until the end of March. This will provide traders with further invaluable support over the Christmas and News Year period and give the town centre improvement groups the opportunity to work with traders and other representatives to find a fee system that works best for

everyone involved. “In the long-term fees are an essential part of all markets, not just to cover their running costs but also to manage the quality of offer on those markets. However, with the changing and difficult impact of coronavirus still ongoing, I hope that this free period can help our traders and reaffirms that markets are an integral part of our future plans and part of our ambition to encourage a vibrant and varied town centre experience in South Holland.” More information on South Holland’s markets, as well as details on how you can apply to take part, can be found at https://www.sholland. gov.uk/markets.

Spalding Travel supports Agape Care Food Bank

E

ach year, The Holiday With Us Group works with local food banks and charities to support those in need within the local community. This year Spalding Travel are supporting Agape Care Food Bank by helping to provide Christmas treats to add to food parcels for those in need this Christmas. Due to the national lockdown they are unable to act as a collection point for donations as planned, however they have outlined how people can still donate during this difficult period. “Many in our community rely on the food bank on a weekly basis for essential food items.

Agape Care Foodbank are working exceptionally hard during these challenging times to provide food parcels for those in desperate need. Any donations that our customers and the local community can make would be greatly appreciated.” Donations must be made by 12th December and can include Bread Sauce, Gravy granules, Christmas Cake, Savoury snacks, Selection Boxes, Pringles, Mince Pies, Christmas crackers, Colouring Books and Felt tip pens. Food items must be in date, packed, dried, jarred or tinned, no fresh foods will be accepted. These can be dropped off at The Lighthouse, 10 Haverfield Rd, Spalding on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 12 – 2pm.

The best apps for… Santa!

T

he best for surprising the kids: Message From Santa. Message From Santa enables the kids to leave a voicemail for Santa or to send him a text message, and to receive a video message from St Nicholas himself. Don’t worry, it’s not a real video call: the whole thing is simulated so you don’t need to worry about sharing your phone number. The best for tracking Santa’s sleigh: NORAD Santa Tracker Track Santa’s Christmas Eve trip around the world thanks to the US military, whose satellites enable you to see exactly where Santa is as he gets ever closer to your home. They’ve been tracking Santa since 1955, and www.noradsanta.org starts offering Christmas content from the first of the month.

The best for silly festive fun: Elf Yourself Some things have become tradition: Mariah on the stereo, Elf on the Shelf and the Elf Yourself app on your phone. It enables you to put your friends’ or family’s faces on a troupe of dancing elves and use augmented reality so they appear to be dancing in your home.

Mediterranean Gardens create the wow-factor at Fenchurch House Care Home

N

ewly opened, Fenchurch House Care Home in Spalding Common creates a lasting impression on visitors before they have even set foot through the door. Together with Olive Grove Mediterranean Nursery, care home operator Country Court has ensured the outside space is as stunning as the luxurious interior. Recently opened, Fenchurch House is Country Court’s 33rd care home, offering family-led residential and dementia care in a modern and homely setting. Abdul Kachra, Chairman of Country Court has taken a personal interest in the gardens and has worked closely with Jon Parrott of local Mediterranean Nursery, Olive Grove Oundle, to create a stunning and beautifully mature garden for residents to enjoy. “We’ve been working with Country Court for three years now,” explained Jon Parrot joint owner of Olive Grove Oundle. “Mr Kachra has a clear vision for the gardens with residents’ needs at the heart of our plans. We aimed to provide visual impact and wow factor, without having to wait 30 years for the garden to mature.” In keeping with the unique style of plants provided by the Olive Grove, the gardens at Fenchurch House contain stunning 12-year-old palm trees from Spain, 100-year-old Olive trees and hedging that was already 8-10 years old when it was planted. Residents will be able to move easily around the wheelchair-friendly paths with quirky design features greeting them around every corner adding areas of interest and talking

points. From stunning six-foot-high metal giraffe and leaping antelope sculptures to wooden carts and oak benches, there is plenty to see and do in the garden. I want our gardens to lift the spirits of everyone who lives with us. When you see Mediterranean style planting it’s a breath of fresh air. Care home gardens are often designed to be low maintenance and can be uninteresting. People who come to live in our homes have often enjoyed creating their own mature gardens and that’s what we aimed to recreate, people want to see lush gardens and areas that stimulate and please them.” Explained Abdul Kachra. Olive Grove Oundle is a plant centre specialising in supplying Palm Trees, Mediterranean Plants and Olive Trees. It was founded by Tim and Jacqueline Thackeray in 2009 and has been owned by Jon and Andy Parrott since 2016. The Parrott family have spent the last 26 years building and developing Waterside Garden Centre, Baston, into one of the best family-owned independent garden centres in the UK. The Olive Grove started as a Mediterranean Nursery and has developed into a lifestyle business allowing them to work, live and meet customers in a relaxed and pleasant environment. For more information about Fenchurch House or to make an appointment to take a look around the gardens and home, please contact Suria Webb on 01775 292 730 or email fenchurch@ countrycourtcare.com.

Nick’s Notes Worth Cllr Nick

A

t the time of writing in our second lockdown and indeed as we emerge from it and back into the tier system (which could well mean we are in a higher tier when we return), it is really important that we support our local shops that are open in the run up to Christmas. There are some fantastic independent shops selling a vast array of goods and exciting presents, so please think local first and support our local economy. OUR LOCAL SHOPS NEED YOU! I recently had a really spirit lifting and emotional day recognising the many staff involved with Fire & Rescue to thank them for their efforts to date during the Covid Pandemic. Many, if not all have gone above and beyond the call of duty that they regard as part of their every day work. Many of the projects

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages....

they were involved in were on top of the day job and I really appreciated their “I can do that” attitude. To give you some examples Fire & Rescue created a new store and supplies centre at their Waddington training centre for the storage of food and medical supplies that were then distributed around the County. There has been a whole team planning for the potential for mass loss of life so that the movement of deceased people could be done in a professional and dignified manner. Mortality planning is not a nice thing to do or to have on your CV maybe, but they have planned for every eventuality and still have a smile on their faces. A number of firefighters supported EMAS with ambulance driving on non blue light events, taking a massive amount of pressure off EMAS staff, which has been

greatly appreciated by EMAS and managed without affecting fire cover within their local communities. It also put these front line workers at increased risk of infection, so a big thank you to them. PPE as we know was a massive issue at the start of the first wave in particular, with national changes on an almost daily basis. But two of our staff in particular played a critical role working with the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum in understanding what equipment was needed and what levels of PPE was required. They built up such a knowledge that enabled them to effectively challenge and influence national policy, which was a real credit to them. All of the senior commanders in Fire & Rescue played a key role in the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum in tactical co-ordination in both response and recovery stages and

now back in response mode. One officer told me that he, along with others were in the concrete bunker at Lincoln’s Emergency Planning Centre (EPC) for three days at a time and then having three days at home. The EPC is a serious concrete bunker with no windows and a lot of screens. I can’t start to think of the pressure on all those working in this environment, never having dealt with a pandemic like this before and the effect inevitably on their mental health and yet this particular officer told me that it was probably the highlight of his career and how proud he felt to just be a part of it. Thank you to all those staff working as part of the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum, you have made a real difference to people’s lives during this pandemic especially through your coordination with local communities throughout Lincolnshire. Well all I can say is that as the executive member responsible for Fire & Rescue, how proud I am of all of them in Fire & Rescue and cannot thank them enough for their massive contributions. We all know what a fantastic job all of our front line workers have done, especially in the NHS, which has been well documented, but I thought it would be good for you to know that there are many more in our community, including the Police who have quietly got on with their job and more. We are immensely grateful to them all.

Advice Struggling to Pay Your Energy Bills? During November, Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire (CASL) supported the Money and Pensions Service ‘Talk Money’ Campaign. The aim of the campaign is to encourage people to engage in conversation about financial matters. Financial matters can range from things like budgeting, pension arrangements and debt. As winter approaches, energy bills will become more and more a financial consideration. If you’re struggling to afford your gas and electricity bills, CASL can help. Our money advice team can be reached through email at:moneyadvice2@ citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk The team are able to assist on a range of issues from budgeting, helping set up repayment plans and negotiating with creditors on your behalf, if needed. Getting help paying your bills If you’re struggling to afford your energy bills, you might be able to take advantage of certain benefits, grants and help offered by the government and energy suppliers. You might be able to get extra help and support from your energy supplier by signing up to the Priority Services Register. You can sign up if you’re a pensioner, disabled or sick, or if your energy network considers you ‘vulnerable’. They would be able to help you with things like: • reading your energy meter • moving your energy meter free of charge • getting your bills sent or

copied to someone else, eg a carer You might be able to get £140 off your electricity bill under the Warm Home Discount Scheme if you’re either: • getting the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit • on a low income Check with your supplier to see if they offer the Warm Home Discount - not all suppliers are part of the scheme. If you’ve applied for the Warm Home Discount but you switch supplier before you get the payment, you have to apply again with your new supplier. Your new supplier might have different rules about who gets the discount. This doesn’t affect you if you get the discount automatically, without having to apply. If you were born on or before 5th October 1954, you may be eligible for a Winter Fuel payment towards the cost of your bills. You usually get the payment automatically, if you are eligible and are in receipt of State Pension. If you are eligible, but do not receive the payment automatically, you will need to make a claim. It may also be possible to save money by switching your energy

supplier. You’ll need to follow a different process for switching if you’re in debt to your supplier, or if you’re a tenant. Before you switch, you should start by: • checking which type of meter you have • finding out if your contract has an ‘exit fee’ for leaving early - it’s usually on your bill • looking at your current suppliers tariffs You’ll need to follow a different process for switching if you’re in debt to your supplier, or if you’re a tenant. Things to consider before switching You should start by: • checking which type of meter you have • finding out if your contract has an ‘exit fee’ for leaving early - it’s usually on your bill • looking at your current suppliers tariffs 1. Compare tariffs from different suppliers 2. Once you’ve found one, call the supplier - they’ll set up the switch and tell your old supplier. Alternatively, you can switch online. 3. Take a meter reading on the

Once the switch has started, you’ll also need to give the new supplier your energy meter reference numbers. This will make sure they switch your energy supply and not someone else’s. You can find these numbers on your energy bill - they’re called: • meter point reference number or MPRN • meter point administration number or MPAN The switch should be done within 15 working days of the new supplier receiving the information they need. If it takes longer than 15 working days, your new supplier should automatically pay you £30 in compensation. They should pay this within 10 workings days. They’ll either send you a cheque or pay directly into your bank account if they have your bank details. For further information on this matter, or anything related to it you can call Adviceline on 03444 111 444, or use either the Citizens Advice email or webchat services.

The Welland Primary Schools Federation Our three schools are driven by the same educational ethos and values; we strive to ensure every child is given the best introduction to their primary school educational journey. Starting school can be a daunting prospect for some children. We work closely with our families to build those important relationships that are so crucial in ensuring a happy start to school life. We work closely with pre-schools as well, which enables us to know the whole child and creates a picture of their pre-school learning. As well as focussing on phonics,

number and writing, our Foundation Stage curriculum builds on pre-school learning and provides rich opportunities for children to explore and investigate as well as develop those very important social skills that allow them to build positive relationships with their friends as well as adults. Unfortunately, due to Covid, we are not able to offer visits into school. We will be providing virtual visits but, in the meantime, please do take a look at each school’s website as that provides a detailed insight into each school

Tails By Jo Wright

We may be in Lockdown, but you can’t keep this Labrador down – literally!

H

ello there my friends. I hope you have been coping with being confined to your kennels once again. Stay positive! That’s what my human always says. Positivity is my strong point! My tail has been happily wagging pretty much since I was born eleven and a half years ago - even after it cleared the coffee table of drinks and cake (which I promptly gobbled up). Staying, on the other hand, I am not so good at. You’ll be pleased to hear that my sore shoulder is much better thanks to my medicine, so I am back to bounding around and hounding my humans for snacks and walks all day, every day. Doorbell services have also been resumed. When I was poorly, there was often a wall of boxes outside our front door, thanks partly to what has been described as ‘an out of control online shopping habit’ (although not by the person making the purchases) and partly

due to my inability to move off the bed (belonging to the person making the purchases) to bark when fleets of vans pulled up. Now when a delivery arrives I howl heartily for all to hear. In fact, a large box came this morning. ‘What’s in here Otis?’ asked my

human, in a tone that suggested she knew exactly what it contained. ‘Stay there while I fetch something to open it.’ She went to get the scissors. I followed. After some careful cutting of cardboard and the removal of tape from my snout, a sturdy looking long structure was revealed. I looked quizzically at my human. ‘It’s a ramp!’ she smiled. ‘For getting in and out of cars easier.’ ‘Why’s that?’ I woofed. ‘Are you struggling?’ ‘No dear, it’s for .. oh never mind. Let’s try it out shall we?’ I was asked to stay so she could open the boot and get the ramp in place. Imagine her face when, as soon as it opened, I leapt athletically inside, ignoring both the ramp and her command. ‘Where shall we go?’ I panted enthusiastically. ‘Hmmmm, I wonder if dog groomers are classed as ‘essential services’?’ she muttered.

Oh dear. Your friend,

Family Life

Caring for the Elderly Through Coronavirus Restrictions Being a carer for someone can look really different to each and every person. You might not even consider yourself a carer, just someone who lends a hand or pops to the shops for someone you know. But if you provide support for someone – whether you’re paid or not – then you’re a carer. You may care for someone by: • picking up essential supplies • checking in with them on a regular basis • supporting them to take their medication • providing cleaning services • supporting someone to stay independent at home with personal care such as helping them to eat, move about the house or shower. If you care for someone, it’s a good idea to put together an emergency plan, just in case something happens, or guidance changes, and it becomes trickier for you to keep providing care. Your emergency plan should include: • the name and address and any other contact details of the person you look after • details of any medication the person you look after is taking • details of any medical appointments they need to keep • details of any ongoing treatment they need • details of what you do to care for the person • who should be contacted if there’s an emergency. Perhaps there’s a family member, friend, trusted neighbour or a local community support group that could step in and help if necessary? Can I still provide care for someone in their home if I don’t live with them? If you provide care that requires you to go into someone’s home – perhaps you help them to get out of bed, move around their house, take their medication, or get dressed – then you can carry on doing this. But, if you do so, you have to follow simple hygiene steps to protect the person you care for. These include:

• washing your hands when you arrive and often during your visit, using soap and water for at least 20 seconds • catching any sneezes in a tissue and dispose of it straight away • if you do need to cough you should cough into the crook of your elbow • consider wearing a face covering if it’s possible for you and the person you are caring for. If you or the person you care for lives alone or in a singled-adult household, you can form a support bubble with each other. This can make caring easier as it means you can spend time in the house of the person you care for without needing to socially distance. If you are in an area where lockdown restrictions are in place, it means you would be able to stay at one another’s houses and travel together. You’re only allowed to form one support bubble with another household and once you have formed a support bubble you cannot change who is in the bubble. If the person you care for lives in a supported living setting, you should talk to the person you care for and the supported living provider to arrange how you can continue to provide this care. Can I still provide care for and visit someone in a care home? There are ways you can still visit a loved one living in a care home. However, individual care homes are responsible for their own visiting policies, which means it’s likely each care home will take a slightly different approach to how they facilitate visits. Though there may be differences, there is Government guidance that each care home should follow. These include: • Limiting the number of visitors

16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

to a single constant visitor, with an absolute maximum of two constant visitors per resident. • Using appropriate PPE during the visit and following social distancing measures. • Facilitating open-air visits wherever possible, such as in a garden or a window visit. • Facilitating visits in a dedicated room where possible, if outdoor visiting isn’t possible. • Facilitating visiting in temporary outdoor structures where possible, such as ‘visiting pods’. • Allow for an individualised approach to visits for residents unable to follow the guidelines above because they are unable to leave their room, or are living with advanced dementia. The guidance allows for residents to receive visits from their loved ones in all circumstances if they are at the end of their life. Where visits are allowed, it’s likely they’ll differ from visits before the coronavirus pandemic. This might mean you won’t be able to provide the same care as you have done in the past. If there’s a coronavirus outbreak in the care home it’s likely visits will stop, except for in exceptional circumstances such as the end of life. However, if visits do stop then there should be alternative ways of communicating with residents and regular updates should be provided about how the person in the care home is coping, both physically and mentally. The care home should clearly communicate its visiting policy and make it available to all residents and their families. You may have already done so, but if you’re unsure about whether you can visit a loved one you should contact the care home or local council

about visiting arrangements. What can I do if I’m worried about their wellbeing? If you’re caring for someone, you may be worried about their wellbeing, particularly with everything going on. It’s normal during this strange time to feel anxious or worried. If you’re very concerned about someone’s health or welfare, but don’t think it’s an emergency you should call 111 for NHS advice, 24 hours a day. If there is an emergency, you should call 999. If the person you care for develops symptoms of coronavirus it’s important to follow guidelines on booking a test and self-isolating. If they’re clinically extremely vulnerable and develop symptoms you should call NHS 111 immediately for advice. You should also seek medical help for the person you care for if: • they cannot cope with their symptoms at home • they feel breathless and it’s getting worse • their symptoms get worse. In other situations, for example where you’re worried about potential abuse or neglect, you can contact the local authority in the area where the person lives and let them know that you are concerned. How can I look after my own wellbeing? This is a worrying time for many and if you are caring for someone, this may be a particularly stressful time for you. As carers, it’s easy to focus so much of our energy on the person we care for, that sometimes we may forget to look after ourselves, however we must protect the wellbeing of both the person we care for and ourselves.

Honeypot Day Nursery & Pre-school

J

ust over 10 years ago, the local authority built a new school building for Weston Hills C of E Primary School and little did I know that when leaving the old school, my passing comment of ‘This building would make a good nursery and preschool’ would result in actually doing it. There have been up and downs along the way, but many more ‘ups’ than ‘downs! After a protracted purchase period, we finally owned the building and, with 4 members of staff and eight children, opened our doors in April 2008. Honeypot Day Nursery and Pre-school now has approximately 75 under 5’s on roll, together with 47 school children who attend various out of school sessions and 16 members of staff. As parents ourselves, we recognise the importance of providing high quality, affordable childcare in a local community. Our primary aims are: • To provide the highest quality standards in care and development through the creation of a warm, caring and stimulating environment. • To provide the best opportunity for each child to develop socially, physically, emotionally and educationally at their own rate as individuals. • To maintain close working relationships with parents, ensuring we work in partnership with the child’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. • To ensure children leave Honeypot with the necessary skills for the next step in their life as they start school. • For everyone to feel happy, safe and valued. We recognise that sending a child to Honeypot is usually the child’s first experience of care and education outside of the home and we aim to make it a happy and memorable one. We maintain records of every child’s achievements at the nursery, which are available for parents to access on-line with many, many pictures. Parents can contribute to this record and it therefore develops into a learning journey covering the whole period the child is with us, for parents to keep when the child leaves. Our staff are well qualified with a variety of qualifications from EYPS to Level

3. We usually take apprentices who will all be working towards achieving a level 3 qualification. We feel passionate about our role and expect high standards from each and every one of our team. The staff team is fabulous and many staff are also parents themselves. Children need to play, and we plan learning opportunities that are both fun and stimulating, aiming to develop enquiring minds. Children enjoy a variety of activities, both indoors and out – in all weathers! They may come home with works of art for the fridge, a beautiful building (from cardboard boxes) or cakes. Sometimes they come home with nothing, but they will have had a great time and developed new skills from the things they have done. We have a lot of singing and movement and during the summer we encourage parents to join us for ‘sports day’ – I use the term loosely! We have trips out, Christmas parties, visitors in (police, reptiles, ceramic painting) graduations, leavers and parents’ parties. Honeypot Day Nursery takes funded

children from 2 years old, where parents meet government set criteria. All 3 and 4 year old children can receive funded care for up to 15 hours per week during the school term (or a lower number stretched over the year) from the term after they turn 3. From September 2017, 3 and 4 year olds with working parents, may be entitled to receive a further 15 hours per week – taking the total to 30. We are happy to show you around our nursery, and talk to you about your childcare needs. For more information call: 01406 380803, email: office@ honeypotdaynursery.com or see our website www.honeypotdaynursery.com

Business World

Are you Ready? Your Tax Return is Due by January 31st The benefits of using an accountant One of the reasons people choose to go into business for themselves is to simplify the often complex and arbitrary workloads that come with being employed by a large organisation. Indeed, plenty of former office workers will remember a time when it felt like half their day was taken up by form-filling, training and other bureaucracy. The prospect of starting afresh, with a handful of clients and a workflow of your own design, can be extremely appealing. However, many business owners find this simplicity hard to maintain as their business grows, and accounting is one of the first areas where it can be beneficial to relinquish control. Appointing an accountant can be a step towards making your life easier, allowing you to shift your focus to the core strategic elements of your business. How an accountant benefits your business When you work for yourself, every penny counts and it can be easy to see an accountant as just another layer of expense. But there are several ways that cost can be justified. Accountants specialise in checking, analysing and preparing the financial records of a business and ensuring it operates within the law and HMRC guidelines. Here are some of the ways having an accountant benefits your business: Saving you time As a business owner, your number one priority is to generate business and fulfill the work you win. Anything else takes away from the task at hand. If you are spending hours on your accounts, that is valuable time that could be used to make more income. Every hour you spend doing the books, is costing you your hourly rate or eating into your downtime. Engaging an accountant gives you back that time to do what you do best, while knowing that your financial and tax affairs are in good hands.

Saving you money A good accountant can save your business money in a number of ways. They will be able to guide you on the most tax efficient way to operate, including how you take money out of your company, based on your individual circumstances and situation. Your accountant will be able to explain how and when to pay yourself dividends, what can and can’t be claimed as allowable business expenses, and registering for VAT. Avoiding penalties Filling in forms incorrectly, missing deadlines or failing to understand new legislation could lead to penalties which put an unwelcome dent in your profits. Companies House and HMRC fines can range from £150 for a day late submission of annual accounts to an eye-watering £1,500 for a six-month delay. Your accountant will help you keep on top of deadlines, assist you with preparing your annual company accounts and corporation tax returns. They will also be able to assist with VAT returns and your self-assessment tax return with regards to your personal tax. Helping your business grow Aside from the number-crunching and paperwork, your accountant is a source of advice and support as you grow your business. The right accountant will be invested in seeing your business go from strength to strength. Success requires sound financial decisions and an accountant’s objective advice and input can be worth its weight in gold, as they will be able to suggest solutions based on their experience. Taking away worry Tax and finances can be daunting and complex. The list is pretty exhaustive – preparing your company year-end accounts, preparing abbreviated accounts where appropriate, doing your personal tax

24 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

return and dealing with corporation tax and VAT. Throw in liaising with HMRC and Companies House and it’s a sizeable burden if you choose to go it alone. Having a professional accountant onside can ease this load and give you peace of mind, allowing you to get on with running your business. Submitting Your Tax Return What your accountant will need to file your tax return With the tax return deadline fast approaching, there are probably thousands of business owners desperately trying to gather all their receipts and expenses together, ready to drop them off at their accountant’s office. Peter Wright, Director of Bulley Davey, comments: “Completing your income tax return can be a complicated and daunting business, especially if you’re completing the form for the first time. Using an accountant can keep things simple by completing the form on your behalf. Not only will this save you valuable time, but it also gives you peace of mind that the detail has been taken care of and avoid any unnecessary fines. Having your return completed by a qualified accountant can also help you when applying for a mortgage or other loans, and as specialists, we will also make sure you’re only paying what you owe.” Here is a breakdown of what records your accountant will need to produce your accounts and your selfassessment tax return. Records for your Tax Return Employment Income – If you have any employment income (aside from your Limited Company), you need

to provide your P60, or P45 if that employment income ceased during the year. Dividends received during the year. Yes, even the 45p one for a drink! Everything needs to be included. Rental income – Your accountant will need to see your property management expenses if you receive your rental net via an estate agent. Also, your mortgage interest allows for some additional relief but unfortunately not all of it is claimable. P11d – This would be for any benefits you received. Private pension payments – Give details of any payments made as these can give you additional relief if you qualify. Bank interest received – Anything received during the year (excluding ISAs). This is one item on your tax return HMRC already knows about, so be sure not to forget this, if not HMRC will come a-knocking! Any other income you received during the year. This may come from another self-employment job that you may have or a chargeable gain from selling a rental property or some shares etc. Your tax return must show all your income so it’s best to be safe rather than sorry and check something you are not sure about with your accountant instead of deciding not to declare it. Getting your financial affairs in order well ahead of the deadline also means that you are far less likely to be hit with costly penalties either because the tax return was filed late or there was an error due to it being rushed.

little town with a huge heart, Long Sutton is brimming with character, charm and colour. With a rich historical past and a full and fabulous future, this jewel of the wash is a market town not to be missed. From flowers to furniture, haircuts to hardware, Long Sutton’s centre has it all. Whether you would like new clothes, a chemist or a slice of cake, or you need to buy food for your pet or perhaps see the vet, this is the town to visit. Long Sutton locals are lucky enough to have access to so many facilities all in one place – their vibrant town. Are you familiar with Long Sutton’s history? Did you know there used to be a cinema called The Gem which was on the site now occupied by the Premier shop? And over the road from this was Long Sutton’s very own railway station, where you could catch a train to Hunstanton. There is no doubt the landscape has changed – from the ground up! Long Sutton once sat on the coast of The Wash. Now it is completely inland. Buildings

have been repaired, restored and renovated, to give this immaculately kept town the outlook both locals and visitors enjoy today. The Bull Hotel is one of the most famous landmarks in Long Sutton. This imposing Grade II listed building marks the corner of the marketplace, where Friday’s busy market can be found. St Mary’s Church towers majestically over the town and dominates the skyline magnificently. The town is rightfully proud of St Mary’s. Drive past it on the main road and you will see the unmissable sign boasting, ‘Britain’s highest, oldest, most perfect timber spire’! And don’t forget one rather unusual town talking point – the whalebone arch which can be found in Cinder Ash Park. Moving from famous to infamous, legend has it Dick Turpin spent some time in Long Sutton. This connection with the highwayman can be seen subtly in the town. Long Sutton County Primary School is located on Dick Turpin Way! The town is home to some

pretty innovative designs. Enter Long Sutton from either direction along the B1359 (or the old A17 as locals call it) and you are greeted by environmentally conscious constructions. Approach from the west and you will see Hoddins Way Business Park, which is a carbon neutral business zone. Come into town from the east and you find Unity Gardens – eco-friendly earthsheltered homes built around a decade ago. Long Sutton Common Pit is a adelightful place to look for wildlife including moorhens, wagtails and, of course, ducks! Watch out for them crossing the road too. Official signs have been put up specifically to warn

drivers, because these feathery friends show zero signs of developing any road sense! The Common Pit has a dear little history all of its own, having been used to provide passing livestock with a much needed drink in its past. Its water has also been used to wash fruit barrels, sheep and circus elephants! There is also a sporting tradition in the town too, with clubs playing cricket, hockey and football – with Long Sutton Athletic FC affectionately known as The Magpies. Long Sutton combines lively with calm, past with present and progress with prosperity, and values its visitors and residents alike.

• 50g breadcrumbs

• 1 white onion, finely diced

• 1 tsp salt

• 50g chestnuts, diced

• 400g sausage meat

• 50g cranberries, chopped

• 1 sheet of ready roll puff pastry

• 1 garlic clove, crushed • 10g sage leaves, finely chopped

• 1 egg, beaten

• 10g parsley, finely chopped

Christmas Fudge

Method

10 mins prep 40 mins cooking, overnight chill

Makes: 100 pieces

• Other spirits can be use d, such as rum or whiskey • Ensure the saucepan you use for the butter, milk and sugar mixture is almost too big – this is because the mixture needs to boil and will therefore need room to expand • You will need a sugar thermometer

• 100ml Cointreau

• 500g granulated sugar

• 25g raisins

• 1 cinnamon stick

• 25g chopped hazelnuts

• 3 pieces of stem ginger, finely chopped

• 2 star anise

• 1 orange, zest only

• 1 can evaporated milk

• 25g dried cranberries

• 150g butter

Mulled Wine Ingredients • 2 clementines, sliced • 1 lemon, sliced • 200g soft brown sugar

Line a deep baking tray with greaseproof paper

2.

Add the cranberries, raisins, ginger, orange zest, Cointreau, cinnamon stick and star anise to a small pan

3.

Cook on a medium heat until the Cointreau has absorbed into the fruit, stir occasionally

4.

Take off the heat and allow to cool

5.

Add the butter, evaporated milk and sugar to a large saucepan

6.

Stirring regularly cook over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved Increase the heat to bring the mixture to the boil (this is when the mixture will expand in volume)

8.

Cook for 20 – 30 minutes, stirring continuously to ensure the mixture doesn’t catch

9.

After about 20 minutes check the temperature of the mix with a sugar thermometer – it needs to reach 116oC

1 ½ hours

Remove from the heat and stir rigorously for approx. 5 minutes

11.

Remove the cinnamon stick and the star anise from the fruit mixture

12.

Add the rest of this mixture, along with the chopped hazelnuts to the fudge mix

13.

Continue stirring the mix – it will start to look dull and get a lot thicker

14.

As it starts to form a ball in the pan, add it to the lines baking tray – it will be thick, so press it into the tin, then smooth off with a knife

15.

Leave to cool and then transfer to the fridge, ideally overnight

16.

When completely set, remove from the baking tray, discard the greaseproof paper and cut as desired

In a frying pan, sweat off the onion with the butter, cook on a low heat for around 10 mins, until softened and slightly coloured. Once cooked, put to one side to cool

3.

In a large bowl mix together the chestnuts, cranberries, garlic, sage, parsley, breadcrumbs and salt

4.

Mix through the sausage meat with your hands until all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed in

5.

Split the mix into 4 even sections

6.

Lay the pastry sheet onto a floured surface, cut into 4 even rectangles

7.

Create large sausages with the 4 pieces of sausage meat mix and lay them onto the 4 sections of pastry

Top Tips

8.

Brush one side of the pasty with egg and bring the other side over the sausage meat, creating the roll – stick down with the egg and press together firmly to seal

9.

Cut each large sausage roll into 6 pieces to create mini rolls

10.

Transfer to two lined baking trays

11.

Brush with the beaten egg to glaze and with a garnish of your choice

12.

Bake in the centre of the oven for 25 minutes, or until the puff pastry has risen and turned a golden colour

The Great Outdoors

LET S GET WALKING!

Of all the types of exercise someone could take up, it is perhaps walking that is the most accessible to all regardless of current levels of fitness or of income. It’s free, suitable for any age and can be done almost anywhere - walking is the ‘no excuses’ exercise. Your health Walking helps keep your heart and circulatory system healthy, lowering your risk of stroke and heart disease. It also gives your leg muscles and lungs a workout; reduces stress; helps you sleep; burns excess calories; and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, depression and Type 2 diabetes. Phew, that sounds so good it should be prescribed. You don’t have to walk miles to benefit, either. The NHS says even just a brisk 10-minute daily walk has many health benefits, counting towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A brisk pace is around 3 miles an hour – if you’re relatively fit, you should still be able to talk, but not sing a song. The free NHS Active 10 app handily tells you when you’re walking fast enough and suggests ways to fit in more brisk walking. An added benefit of walking outside is exposure to sunshine. Particularly through the late spring and summer, this will top-up your levels of Vitamin D which is good for your bone health and your immune system. Be sociable – or get alone time Walking can be a chance to chat with your friends and family, away from distracting screens and chores. You could also take part in organised

walks, whether that be a Nordic walking class, a Walking for Health walk, or joining a walking group such as the Ramblers (formerly the Ramblers Association). Whilst of course with current restrictions you can only walk with one other person this is so important for not only our physical health but mental health too. You may prefer to use walks as a chance for some quiet time to yourself. You could listen to music or an audiobook to distract yourself and prevent boredom – music may help you get into a rhythm and walk faster, or you could even learn a language. However, always make sure that you remain aware of your surroundings and can hear traffic or people approaching. How and where to walk You can either set aside time for walking or integrate walking into your daily routine and journeys. Could you get the family out for an after-dinner walk, or persuade family or friends into a weekend ramble. • Wear supportive, suitable footwear. If you are walking to work,

you could take a smarter pair of shoes with you to change into. • Stay hydrated. Always take a drink with you if you’re planning to walk for more than 20 minutes or it’s hot. • Always consider the terrain and the weather, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Do you need warm and/or waterproof clothing, headgear and footwear? Do you have snacks, drinks, a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone? Useful Webites: • Living Streets has information about walking in cities and their initiatives to encourage walking even when you don’t live or work in the countryside. www.livingstreets.org.uk. • Walkit has an interactive walk planner to help you find the best city walking routes, including journey time, calorie burn, step count and carbon saving details: • Hikideas has a searchable walk database and walk planner for both urban and more rural walks. • Active 10 can be downloaded from the Apple app store or the Google Play store. • Walk Unlimited is a hub for walking

Home & Property

Looking After You and Your Home this Winter Winter can be a magical time. However, snow storms, freezing temperatures and long, dark nights can have a big impact on your home. Snow, ice and frozen pipes can all cause damage that generally leads to a spike in insurance claims. Darker, colder days also mean your heating and electricity bills can increase rapidly. Start preparing for winter to avoid these risks and high energy bills with our cold weather tips.

31st. This warns you of predicted adverse weather conditions in the coming days and weeks. There are actions you can take in advance to guard against them. Our checklist covers simple tasks you can do inside and outside to help when you’re getting ready for winter.

Winter home maintenance checklist The Met Office provides a Cold Weather Alert Service every year, between November 1st to March

In your garden, driveway and around your home’s exterior, there are a few actions you can take to prevent snow, ice and rain damage:

Cut down overgrown branches Dead branches and foliage from hedges can fall into and clog gutters. Snow can also build up on them, causing branches to snap, fall and damage anything below. Trim them back to help avoid this. Clear gutters and drains Blockages in gutters and drains can lead to water backing up. It can start to run down the walls of your house and leak through the roof. If it freezes, the added weight can put a strain

on plastic guttering and drainpipes, causing them to break. Clear them regularly during winter. Check and fix the roof Make sure any aerials and satellites are secured, especially when strong winds are forecast. Assess and replace cracked or missing roof tiles. Again, water can leak through and freeze in cracks, possibly causing more damage.

Are You Eligible for Help With Your Winter Bills? Winter Fuel Payment Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free payment to help with heating costs. Most payments are made between November and December. How much could I get? • £200 if you’re under 80 • £300 if you’re over 80. However, you’ll usually get less if you live with other people who also qualify. Am I eligible to claim Winter Fuel Payment? You may be eligible for Winter Fuel Payment if you meet all the following criteria: • You were born on or before 5 October 1954 • You usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you receive the State Pension or another benefit, such as Pension Credit (but not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support or Universal Credit). If you qualify, but don’t get paid automatically, you’ll need to make a claim. How can I claim Winter Fuel Payment? If this is the first year you can claim, or if you’ve never claimed before, call the Winter Fuel Payment helpline on

0800 731 0160. You’ll need to know your National Insurance number and your bank or building society details. You only need to claim once. After this, you should automatically receive a payment every year, as long as your circumstances don’t change. Warm Home Discount Scheme You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2020 to 2021 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The money is not paid to you - it’s a one-off discount on your electricity bill, between September and March. You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity. Contact your supplier to find out. The discount will not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment. Eligibility There are 2 ways to qualify for the Warm Home Discount Scheme: • You get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit - known as the ‘core group’ • You’re on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme - known as the ‘broader group’

40 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

How you apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme depends on how you qualify for the discount. Pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meters You can still qualify for the discount if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter. Your electricity supplier can tell you how you’ll get the discount if you’re eligible, for example a voucher you can use to top up your meter. Contact Charis Grants for more information about the scheme on 0330 555 9424. Cold Weather Payment You may get a Cold Weather

Payment if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest. You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days. You’ll get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March. The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs from 1 November 2020 to 31 March 2021. If the temperature remains low you can check if you are eligible for a payment by visiting www. coldweatherpayments.dwp.gov.uk

Choosing and Caring for Your Christmas Tree Which tree to buy? Where to put it? And how best to look after it? We help you to make the most of your festive centrepiece. Some say there is no substitute for a real Christmas tree – while others argue that artificial trees are an excellent alternative. We offer some arboreal insights. Which type of real tree? For the smell and feel of Christmas, you can’t beat a real tree. But which type should you opt for? The Norway Spruce is the classic choice, with a traditional shape, plenty of branches and a long-lasting scent. However, it can be on the spikey side and is more likely to shed needles. The Nordmann Fir is the most popular Christmas tree in Europe and has an even shape, soft foliage and glossy, dark green needles that don’t drop much. The Scots Pine is less common but retains its needles and has a lovely, fresh smell, while the Fraser Fir –popular in the USA – has silvery-green, dense, bushy foliage and soft, low-shed needles that give off a citrusy aroma. The majestic Noble Fir features dense whorls of blueish needles with well-spaced foliage while the unusual Lodgepole Pine is bushy, with upward-pointing branches, a strong pine scent and the best needle-retention of all. Cut or container? Freshly cut Christmas trees provide a problem when it comes to disposal (thought they are, of course, biodegradable). For some, a great alternative could be a Christmas tree purpose-grown in a pot. Once

the festive season is over the tree can be moved outside in its pot until next year. Each year it will get a little bigger, and it can be kept for up to three years. Preparing for your tree-shopping trip First, write down the dimensions of the space – height and width – into which your tree will fit, and take them with you along with a tape measure. Pack a pair of heavy gloves to protect your hands, and an old blanket to catch pine needles that fall off in the boot of your car. If transporting your tree on the roof of the car, take a suitable rope and perhaps a tarpaulin to wrap around the tree for protection. Picking out the best tree Look for a symmetrical tree with evenly distributed branches. The freshest trees will boast shiny, green needles that don’t drop off if you pull gently on a branch. Avoid trees with dry or brown needles. Buying direct from a local grower ensures that the tree hasn’t travelled far or been out of the ground for too long. What about artificial trees? Modern artificial trees are incredibly realistic, though probably won’t have the natural appearance (or the delicious smell) that real trees offer. Generally, the more you pay the better an artificial tree will look,

and large, luxurious versions can be expensive. The upside is that it can be used again and again (thus diminishing its environmental impact) – though consider how easily it dismantles or folds down, how heavy it is, and where and how you will store it. Which artificial tree? If you have decided to opt for artificial, the next stage is to measure for the optimum dimensions. There is a huge variety of shapes and sizes on offer, including regular, slim and half (flat-back) trees, while colours range from white to black and everything in between. You may come across a choice between PVC needles, which are flat and papery, and PE, or polyethylene, needles, which are more realistic though more expensive. Many artificial trees are pre-lit, too, with LED fairy lights

already wound around the branches and ready to plug in, and some are ‘frosted’ with a dusting of artificial snow. BOX: Caring for your real tree • If you want it to look good right through until Twelfth Night, try to buy your tree as late as possible. • Ask the seller to saw a small slice off the bottom of the trunk (alternatively, do this yourself as soon as you get home). This will help it to absorb water. • Stand the tree in a bucket of water in a cool place until you are ready to position and decorate it. • If possible, place the tree in a cool spot, away from fires or radiators. Even a sunny window can hasten the tree’s decline. Secure it in a correctly sized, sturdy stand and adjust it so it is level. Fill the reservoir with water and check this regularly, topping up as necessary.

Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid Review By Tim Barnes-Clay. Follow on Instagram @tbarnesclay and Twitter @carwriteups.

I

t’s small, it’s sweet, yet it’s a speedy motor. That just about sums up Suzuki’s Swift Sport Hybrid. It looks almost naughty from the back with its cheeky twin tailpipes - and with five aboard the car appears suitably hunkered down. Hang on, did I say five? Yes, that’s right - I got the whole family into this Japanese supermini. That involves “her indoors” and me in the front - and the three nippers in the back. Well, they’re not all tiny anymore - so it surprised me that two fairly grown youngsters could fit alongside their smaller sibling in her child seat. Was it a squeeze? Hell, yes - but we did it! And the car still didn’t lack power. That “Sport” moniker doesn’t lie - the Swift in this guise does zero to 62mph in just over nine seconds, and its maximum speed is 130mph. What’s more, we went on a long trip to the wilds of Norfolk - and the 50mpg we got on our 200-mile round trip impressed us. Emissions are only 127g/km CO2, too. So, what’s all the hybrid stuff about, then? Well, I won’t bore you with the details; all you

need to know is that a bunch of tech, including a 48V battery and an electric motor, assists the car’s 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbo engine. The new powertrain helps improve fuel consumption by six per cent, but it also enhances driving feel by adding more pulling power to the party. Behind the wheel, you get a real sense of fun sat in the Sport’s bucket-like seats, but any nutteresque driving is best done without your kids in the back. The Swift’s bodyshell is so light that you can chuck the car into bends and zip along straights like you stole it. On top of that, the six-speed manual gearbox tears through the gears like a mad thing. I swear down, the car’s 0-62mph sprint genuinely feels quicker than the figures on paper state. The supermini is noticeably quieter than it used to be as well - possibly due to a roof spoiler that helps to reduce wind resistance, but also because of the decent materials in the cabin that help muffle unwanted sounds. The Suzuki’s safe, too - due to six airbags, blind-spot monitoring, and traffic sign recognition. So, the Swift Sport Hybrid is a bit of devil really

44 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

- on the one hand, from the front, it looks “butter wouldn’t melt” innocent. On the other hand, the little five-door hatch’s raunchy rear is a tell-tale sign that it’s at a similar level to some hot-hatches. For £21,570 you get a lot - for a little car. Pros’ n’ Cons • Efficiency √ • Performance √ • Handling √ • Not a genuine hot hatch X Fast Facts - Suzuki Swift Sport 1.4 Boosterjet Hybrid - as tested: • Max speed: 130 mph • 0-62 mph: 9.1 seconds • Combined mpg: 50.1 • Engine layout: 1373cc, four-cylinder turbo petrol • Max. power (PS): 129 • CO2: 127 g/km • Price: £21,570

The ongoing pandemic is challenging the best of us when it comes to keeping our spirits up, but even without this, the darker days and nights caused by the shorter daylight hours of winter can have a huge effect on how we feel. It’s time to take action.

Do Get Out of the House A break from your usual environment, even if it’s just a walk to the postbox, will lift your spirits for several hours afterwards.

Do Speak Up Speaking to other people is so important. Ask the supermarket cashier about their day or smile at a stranger to remind yourself you aren’t alone.

Do Look to the Light Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a real disorder. A lightbox or even sitting by a window could help with this.

Do Read All About It Search on the internet for user forums where others talk about their feelings. “A problem shared is a problem halved” as the saying goes.

Do Eat Well Junk food will make you feel sluggish and guilty so make just a bit more of an effort to shop, cook and eat healthily.

Don’t Read All About It Social media sometimes makes you feel like everyone else is living their best life and there can be a lot of negativity too. Switch it off!

Don’t Drift Particularly if you aren’t working, the days might seem like one long blur so start each week with a plan. Even if it’s as mundane as sorting a cupboard it’ll be an achievement to mark the day.

Don’t Skimp on your Sleep However negative, bored or anxious you feel when you go to bed, it won’t seem as bad the next morning provided you’ve had a full night’s rest.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up If you have a day where you really haven’t managed to do anything to cheer yourself, just remind yourself that you are human, and sometimes it’s OK not to be OK.

Don’t Ignore It If none of the ideas above work for you and you are feeling really down, don’t assume it’ll just disappear. Reach out to your doctor or a mental health charity.

Gutter Cleaning An often overlooked part of home maintenance can often be gutter cleaning. Left uncleared, gutters will naturally fill with moss, leaves, sticks, silt and general roof debris. Signs that your gutters are in need of a clean include rainwater overflowing the gutter, sagging and water stains on the exterior of the property. The worst case scenario is a full gutter leaking back into the eaves of the property, thus causing expensive damage. Insurance companies have been known to refuse paying out in these circumstances, making gutter cleaning an important twice yearly maintenance task. This is because home insurance covers for damage those results from unexpected events that are outside your control. Generally speaking, home insurance does not cover for damage that could have been avoided through regular maintenance. Fascia & Soffit Cleaning Having your fascia and soffits cleaned will transform the aesthetics of the exterior of your home. Over time your fascia and soffits will collect dirt and grime through simply being exposed to the elements. We use varying cleaning methods including a

water fed pole system as well as traditional techniques. Driveways & Patio Cleaning Bring your driveway back to its best with a professional driveway cleaning. We use various techniques to achieve a top quality finish every time. We’ll treat your home as if it was ours and leave your driveway looking new again. We clean block driveways, brick, natural stone, tarmac, concrete, crazy paving. The only driveway we cannot clean is gravelled driveways! Roofs Don’t forget your roof, the most important part of the house! George also provides a soft wash service for roofs which kills off moss & algae and inhibits new growth for 2+ years.
