o here we are, standing in front of the huge milestone of SCHOOL! 4 years have flown by and we are about to wave our son off onto the next journey of starting at primary school. Whilst I cannot wait to see his little mind learning and developing part of me needs to mourn the freedom of the preschool years and being the person he trusts and believes over anyone else…I am sure I will hear plenty of times that I am wrong and his teacher tells him something different! So shirts ironed, trousers pressed and tissues at the ready. But back to this months’ magazine – we offer advice on your eye health and general wellbeing, we look at how to live a more organic life, we have a selection of ‘end of summer’ recipes. If your own children are heading back to school this month then make sure you read our advice to keep it is stress free as possible. In the home if you’re thinking of updating your flooring then make sure you consider all the options. We also look at jobs to plan in over the next 8 weeks before the weather changes. Annette from The Village Midwives discusses the pros and cons of re-usable nappies. Otis takes a holiday with his family and explores the beach. And finally Tim test drives the new Suzuki Attitude. Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the last few weeks of summer and catch up next month!

WE NEED YOUR NEWS! If you have news to share with the residents of South Holland then please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

South Holland Annual Canvass Begins Residents in South Holland will have now received annual canvass forms through their letterboxes. The form will be addressed to “the occupier” and will contain details of all those who currently live in the property aged 16 or over and who are currently registered to vote to make sure they are able to have their say at future elections. Residents should make sure the information contained on the form is correct and up-to-date. If all the information is correct, all residents need to do is sign and return it as soon as possible to

avoid any future reminders. If there’s any changes that need to be made, residents are being asked to let South Holland District Council know, where possible, by either phone or online. The council is offering these cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly methods of returning the forms, but if residents cannot respond in these ways, they can still post the completed form back in a pre-paid envelope. Councillor Tracey Carter, Portfolio Holder for Governance and Customer, said: “We urge

as many people as possible to complete and sign the form so their voice is heard in any future elections. “If you’re over 16, or have someone living with you that is, please don’t miss the opportunity to get yourself on the Electoral Register.” Details of how residents can confirm their details will be printed on the form. Residents wanting more information can contact the SHDC Elections team on 01775 761161 or elections@ sholland.gov.uk.

Molsom & Associates excited to be finalists in the 2019 Sight Care awards. After winning “Best Moment” category in 2018, Molsom & Associates are excited to announce they have been shortlisted in another category in the 2019 Sight Care awards, with 3 other Independent opticians, from applicants all around the UK. The Sight Care Awards are the premier independent business awards, recognising the best independent opticians from the length and breadth of the UK. Through the Sight Care awards, independent practitioners and their staff enter learning initiatives and independent business content in various categories for recognition of excellence. Finalists are selected by a group of

experienced judges and, from that group of finalists, one winner from each category is awarded. The Sight Care Awards was designed and developed in partnership with the Sight Care Advisory Board. The judging panel was comprised of experienced professionals working in the independent optical sector. The team will find out if they are winners when they attend the conference in September. Andy Molsom, Optician and business owner added “Being shortlisted from all the Independent Opticians who have entered the awards is a great honour. We have been working on our own community project

visiting schools and pre-schools to ensure children attend for regular eye examinations. This is especially important before children start school to ensure they can maximise their full learning potential. Our newest team member Molsom Mole has been busy visiting the schools with the team and making new friends as well! We are always grateful to be recognised for the work we do and we will all have our fingers crossed for the awards.” Andy Molsom has also been nominated and shortlisted for the Macula Society 2019 Optician of the year award. “3rd time lucky hopefully” Andy added after being shortlisted in 2013 and 2015.

Four figure fine for Spalding man whose waste was fly-tipped A Spalding man has been fined over a thousand pounds after waste from his home was fly-tipped when he paid for it to be removed, as South Holland District Council continues its campaign to tackle tippers in the district. Robert Feodor of Teagans Close was identified by the Council after evidence of his details was found among the fly-tipped waste. The case was heard at Boston Magistrates Court on Tuesday 6 August, where in his absence Mr Feodor was charged under the Environmental Protection Act for failing in his duty of care when disposing of domestic waste. The fly-tip, which occurred in a ditch on Dozen’s Bank in Pode Hole, consisted of 12 refuse bags of domestic waste, a divan bed and mattress and a flat-screen TV. When questioned Mr Feodor admitted that the waste belonged to him, with the exception of the TV, and claimed that he had paid an indiviudal to remove the items but had not checked if they had a valid waste carrier license and could not provide their name or details. He was found guilty by Magistrates, who handed him a

fine of £500, alongside costs of £585.12 for investigation and clean-up and a victim surcharge of £50. The total amount payable was £1,135.12. Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for place, said: “Fly-tipping is a crime which we will not tolerate in South Holland. Whether you are the person or business dumping the waste, or if you are just looking to cut corners and save a few pounds by using an individual who cannot produce a waste carrier license, you are at risk of being caught, prosecuted and presented with a fine that will cost much more than you ever stood to save. “Our Enforcement Officers work hard to tackle this important issue and bring the offenders to justice, and results such as this send an important message that we will continue to take action and not let people get away with blighting our towns, villages and countryside.” Fly-tipping can be reported through South Holland District Council’s website, along with other environmental and anti-social behaviour issues, by visiting www.sholland.gov.uk/ reportit.

Six figure funding lift for air ambulance More lives could be saved by the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance thanks to a sky-high donation of more than £160,000 which will boost funds to help it fly 24/7. Lincolnshire Co-op colleagues and members all got onboard to make sure the Society’s Community Champions fundraising for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance rocketed during spring – and it worked. From hundreds of miles cycled and thousands of steps taken by colleagues in sponsored activities to pin badges and Gadsby’s lemon slices bought instore by customers, it all added up. In fact, it’s the highest ever total raised through the Society’s Community Champions scheme. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Engagement Manager Sam Turner said: “Our colleagues and members always throw themselves into our fundraising for local good causes, but we’re delighted by how much our support for air ambulances took off. “Thanks to the speed of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and the skill of its crew, countless lives have been saved. Our colleagues and members really took it upon themselves to say thank you together by raising this money. “We’re immensely proud to present this total to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, knowing that it’ll fund more of the charity’s vital work across our area.” The funding from Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Champions scheme will help Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance as it phases up from its current 7am-7pm seven day a week to 24/7 cover. It’s currently in a two-year trial to do this but must increase funds to help support the move. The ambucopter brings highly trained medics to the scene of incidents and emergencies within minutes, taking the equivalent of an A&E department to the scene. The

specialist crew provide critical care for seriously ill and injured people and can transport them to hospital in a fraction of the time taken by road. The charity does this with no direct government funding – it’s fuelled instead by generous contributions from the community. CEO at Lincs & Notts Air

Ambulance Karen Jobling said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Lincolnshire Co-op. The support shown by its customers and staff has been tremendous and the funds raised will enable our helicopter and life-saving crew to fly more missions, helping more patients in what is often their

greatest hour of need. “A huge thank you to all who have helped to raise this fantastic sum when you see our helicopter flying across the skies, know that you have helped to make this happen and your support means so much. We hope that you’ll never need us, but if you do we will be there.”

NEWS Walking for Health Celebrates Maxey Classic Car You are10th now engaged and Anniversary & Bike Show

have set the date….. time to get planning!!

A scheme aimed at getting more people in South Holland walking has celebrated its ten year anniversary and organisers are keen to attract new members. The district’s Walking for Health initiative marked the occasion with a celebratory event at the South Holland Centre recently, which was attended by 130 walk leaders and volunteers. The scheme helps to support South Holland District Council’s priority of developing safer, stronger, healthier and more independent communities whilst protecting the most vulnerable. Walking for Health offers thirteen walks across the district run by eight walking groups. The health benefits of walking include: lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and strokes, improved heart, lungs and circulation performance, improved mood, reduced anxiety and it can help you sleep better. Walking gets people active and can provide a safe place to meet others, which can also help people to manage or recover from any mental health problems. The walks are led by friendly, knowledgeable volunteers who are specially trained for the job. Not only that but I feel much fitter.” An Ayscoughfee walker added: “I suffered a stroke in 2014 which left me paralysed, but I eventually got mobile again. Advice Claiming Compensation if Your Flight is Delayed or Cancelled Under EU law, you might be eligible for compensation if your flight left from the UK, EU, Noway or Switzerland. You may also be eligible if your flight was with a European airline and landed in any of the aforementioned countries, regardless of where in the world the flight began. You are entitled to compensation if your flight arrives more than three hours late, and the airline is at fault (e.g. technical faults or lack of bookings). However, you are unlikely to get compensation for something that was outside of the airline’s control (e.g. bad weather or a security risk). You are entitled to a set amount of compensation depending on the distance of the flight ( this can be calculated by using the tool available at: http://www.webflyer.com/travel/ mileage_calculator/); how late you are arriving at your destination and whether you are travelling to an EU or non-EU country. If your flight is delayed for five hours or more, you are not obliged to take the flight. If you don’t take the flight: The airline legally has to give you all of the following: • A full refund for the flight. • A full refund for other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking, eg an onward or return flight. • If you’re part-way through a journey, a flight back to the airport you originally departed from. It is important that you see someone from the airline as soon as you decide that you are not going to take your flight. If you do take the flight, you can claim up to €600 in compensation if the airline is at fault.

If your flight is cancelled: You have the legal right to either: • A full refund - including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights • A replacement flight to get you to your destination if you’re part-way through a journey and you don’t want a replacement flight, you also have a right to a flight back to the airport you originally departed from. Ask for a refund or replacement at the airport if you can. If not, you can claim from the airline later. You also have a legal right to: • help with costs - if the cancellation delays you 2 or more hours • compensation - if you’d be delayed 2 or more hours by the replacement flight offered and you were given less than 2 weeks’ notice If you get a replacement flight, the airline has to legally help you with food and drink and access to phone calls and email. They also has to help with accommodation if you are delayed overnight, as well as journeys between the airport and accommodation. You are also able to get help with food, drink and communications if your flight is delayed. There are variables depending on the journey distance and length of delay. Airlines may not reimburse costs for luxury hotels, expensive meals or alcohol. You’re legally entitled to get

s U o t k l Ta

compensation if the delay is the airline’s responsibility and either: • the replacement flight delays your arrival by 2 or more hours • your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure The amount of compensation you’re entitled to depends on: • When the flight was cancelled • The distance of the flight - check the flight distance on the Web Flyer website (see link above). • The departure and arrival times of the rescheduled flight To claim, contact the airline operating the flight (even if you booked with another airline) via the customer service department, with all flight details and your customer reference number to hand. Write your claim by detailing what went wrong and what you would like the airline to do about it. The Which?

Mini Police

The Mini Police program is now entering its second year, with 120 schools across Lincolnshire now on board. Across the county, our PCSOs have been visiting schools and talking to the new Year 5 pupils, explaining our election process and encouraging those who want to be involved to take the time to write speeches. Our PCSOs will then be holding elections whereby pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 are invited to listen to the speeches and choose which candidate they think will be the best Mini Police officer. This democratic process is really important to us, as it encourages children to develop their self-confidence, be brave and stand up and tell their classmates why they want to be involved, what they feel are important goals to aim for, and how they will overcome challenges along the way. Over the coming year, we will deliver some really important messages to not only the Mini Police, but also their classmates, and even sometimes whole schools. We will cover topics such as Anti-Bullying, Diversity and Stereotypes and Scams, along with tasks such as Bike Marking, School Parking, Crime Prevention and Crime Scene Investigation. Each task is written in line with the National Curriculum, and is designed to actively involve the children using tabletop exercises, group discussion, interactive presentations and challenges. Current Year 6 Mini Police from across the area have already completed some of these tasks, along with our Fatal 4 task in which the children learnt about the four biggest causes of deaths and serious injuries on Lincolnshire’s roads. As part of this task, the Mini Police from several schools accompanied their PCSOs to carry out speed checks on motorists. Those found to be over the limit were stopped and offered the opportunity to speak to Mini Police regarding their speed. Mini Police interviewed drivers and educated them about road safety.

Mini Police have also been invited to take part in events in the local community, notably Remembrance Parade and Armed Forces Day Parade in Spalding. The Mini Police stood alongside veterans and represented Lincolnshire Police, receiving

many positive comments from the public. Over the coming months, we look forward to bringing you reports and pictures from the fantastic engagements that our Mini Police carry out in their communities.

Please follow us on our social media pages to keep up-to-date with where we are and what we are doing:

Adult Book Choice Sleep by C.L.Taylor All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty. To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare. Each of the guests has a secret, but one of them is lying - about who they are and why they’re on the island. There’s a murderer staying in the Bay View hotel. And they’ve set their sights on Anna.

Childrens Book Choice Jack From Earth by Chris Wooding Jack has always known there was something not quite right about his parents: they move him every year, never seem to sleep, and what is that beeping from the attic? But when Jack goes to investigate and accidentally sets off an inter-galactic distress signal, things get CRAZY quickly.

owdy hound fans! I hope you have been having a super summer. I’ve been having a whale of a time! My tail wagged through a happy few days in Old Hunstanton with my humans. The weather was absolutely glorious, so we spent our days at the beach, splashing about and making sandcastles under cloudless blue skies. When it’s time to tuck into some delicious food, I find there’s nothing finer than a Norfolk pub. Without fail, you will find me stretched out in the middle of the floor, so that servers and customers alike either have to feed me, stroke me or step over me.

The cricket set is always ready and waiting in our garden in the summer. The five of us love to have a game, and I must say, I excel at catching. And running off with the ball. And standing in the way of the bowler. You may well hear

shouts of ‘catch!’ ‘six!’ and ‘Otis, please don’t sleep on the wicket!’ coming from our kennel. The humans have also been spending summer working on a few projects - like creating flower beds and extending their vegetable patch. They don’t seem to mind my doggy footprints across the freshly-raked soil, although apparently, they’re not keen on me trying to dig up veggies with my paws and nose. I’m rather partial to the odd carrot, you see. There has been a constant flurry of outdoor activity, with calls of ‘look! A frog!’ and ‘Otis, please stop gnawing on my gardening gloves!’. But my favourite thing about all this garden-clearing is the amount of big sticks my humans have discovered. Each one gets thrown my way. I give chase, then find a sunny spot and chew. Yep, summer’s a great time of year – whether you have four legs or two.

Back to school – The Essentials The shops are full of ‘essentials’ for the new school year, and your children will have their own ideas of what they can’t do without. We look at how you can please the kids as well as the teachers without breaking the bank School uniform School uniform is something that parents assume they will buy on special offer. Like Easter eggs, if there isn’t a three-for-two promotion on school shirts, or something similar, shoppers will go elsewhere. Look out for Teflon-coated fabrics if you have a big family and want to pass school uniforms on from one child to the next.

Teflon makes fabric more playground-resistant and clothes will not stain as readily. State primary schools do not strictly enforce uniform policy and often the right coloured sweatshirt will do just as well as a more expensive, regulation one. It is the governing body of a primary school that is responsible for uniform policy but, ultimately, dress code is a voluntary agreement between the parents and the school. Hills Department Store in Spalding are

official stockists of many school uniforms for the local schools. Pens, pencils and pencil cases Classroom equipment needs to be functional, rather than fun. Teachers can be strict about what they allow in the classroom. Items like metal pencil cases are sometimes banned because they are too noisy and, when they fall onto the floor, the contents go flying. If you want to be teacher’s pet, choose a fabric pencil case, either natural or plastic, with a zip that is large enough to hold a pencil, pen, colouring crayons, ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener. Teachers often dictate what children write with usually a pencil to begin with and then a blue or black roller ball or ball point pen for older children. Make sure the rubber is big enough to work well: erasers shaped like a big pebble are ideal. For children who enjoy art a good set of first crayons will last them, something fairly chunky makes it easy to hold and hopefully will ensure they don’t snap! Stationery The choice of stationery is huge, but what do children actually need? Primary Schools all have literacy and numeracy hours, which allow children to learn at their own pace. This means kids have to do less structured, textbook work

18 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

and more is produced on loose bits of paper. Why not get an A4 document box folder which is ideal for storing lots of work. Keeping a diary has gone out of fashion but an alternative is to give children a notebook. Research has shown that children are encouraged to write if they have a notebook that is theirs and in which they can write whatever they want - swear words, jokes, lists of names of people they like, love or hate. Backpacks School bags are getting bigger. The latest designs even include foldaway wheels for trundling heavy loads. Several retailers have launched new school bags with foldaway inline skating wheels and telescopic handles. While fun - this kind of mobile bag could spell trouble along a school corridor and will set you back about £40. Alternatives for heavy loads are classic backpacks, made from waterproof, rip-proof material with padded shoulder straps. For younger children, you may want to consider a fun school bag – maybe a cute animal theme, the latest action hero or their favourite cartoon character. With some thought and careful planning Back to School does not have to leave you with coppers in your purse and you can ensure your children go to school on their first day back with everything they need.

Holbeach Train Station

H

olbeach Station was a component of the Norwich and Spalding Railway. The railway reached Holbeach from Spalding in 1858 and was extended eastward to Sutton Bridge in 1862. The station house would appear to have been built in accordance with a design used with minor adaptations at other stations on the line - in particular, Long Sutton and Moulton. Passenger transport was discontinued in 1959 and goods services were ended in 1965. In more recent times the station house has housed the works and offices of Meridian Printers. The station house complex comprises five connected blocks, mostly constructed in late handmade red brick, decorated with blue brick string courses and dentilation. The upper storey is

pebble-dashed and the roof is of Welsh slate. A recent survey revealed that the station house had probably undergone three main phases of construction and alteration. At the core of the original 1858 complex was a rectangular structure, two storeys high with gabled ends aligned at right angles to the platform. A rectangular, single storey block, set further back from the platform and at right angles to the west wall of the central block, was also considered to have formed part of the original layout. It is likely

22 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

that ticket sales were made in the front area of the central block, with other public areas extending to the east. The survey concluded that a fifth component, infilling along the frontage west of the central block, may have been a slightly later construction (possibly 1860s or 70s) as indicated by mis-aligned brick courses. The station house also incorporated a number of 20th century alterations. The goods shed, situated to the west of the station house, was probably built in three main phases. The original

structure, considered to date to 1858, was rectangular in plan, two storeys high and lay on a south-west to north-east alignment. The long north-western exterior elevation of the building was of particular interest, containing seven recessed panels giving the appearance of large windows, with glazing only in the uppermost D shaped arch (internally, the walling was plain). A small single storey structure, thought to have housed equipment relating to an adjacent weighbridge, abutted the western end of the main goods shed. It partially obscured two recessed panels in the main structure and is therefore thought likely to be an addition - almost certainly pre 1888 since a building at this location is shown on a map of this date. A large extension on the south-eastern side of the original building block dates to the 1970’s. Internal divisions in the goods shed probably date to the same period. {2}{3} The former goods shed had been converted into a garage by at least 1982, with several new ancilliary structures being built to assist this function. Branch Bros Branch Bros Limited, a local family business supplying all kinds of Landscape, Timber and Building Materials marked 50 Years of Trading in 2017 with the opening of their 3rd location now in Holbeach, in the well known Boston Road site of the former Boston Tractors premises. Already having established stores in Bourne and The Deepings, they have now rolled out their trusted and popular format for the local community in Holbeach. As a family run independent merchant, Branch Bros pride themselves on providing a wide range of stock to supply both retail and trade customers at competitive prices making the new branch in Holbeach the one stop shop for all your needs whether in the Building Trade, a Landscaper or working on a DIY project. We provide a timber cutting service on all timber purchased in store including Sheet material and cut to length timber to save time for you the customer.

Gallery Tiles When I started Gallery Tiles & Bathrooms I was asked “how are you going to compete with large nationals and the internet?” Service, design and honest information are the difference. So many customers come to me asking for help and advice and the question “do you design the tiles and bathrooms”. Being in the industry for over 20 years I realise that the public are often unaware, for example, of the issues involved in tiling with large tiles or the kind of remedial work required when changing a bathroom to a wet room. I don’t differentiate between small or large jobs and help out with

patching jobs as well as new property’s or full renovations. I supply to tradesmen and can recommend many different trades, who I can vouch for, to customers. Generally tiles have got bigger and harder, with two colours being the strongest in fashion, grey and beige. On the bathroom side large shower areas and furniture are the biggest must have’s. Wall boarding is often used in the shower area with tiles covering the remainder or used as splash backs. Whatever you want I am always happy to accommodate your requirements and meet all levels of budget.

As well as all round competitive fair pricing, quantity discounts are applied on larger bulk orders as well as other in-store multi-buy offers and promotions ongoing . If you are in the trade or a private individual doing home improvements, we offer Cash Account facilities (pay as you go) to our regular customers which enables discounts and special pricing on our wide range of products. Also available to business and larger spend customers are monthly credit accounts (subject to approval) just ask about it in the Branch. We boast a large customer parking area with easy access to the store and yard, prompt loading and local delivery service and have an experienced and friendly team always happy to help. Call us today or pop in-store to find out more of what we have to offer...we are open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday.

real life readers Lincolnshire mum in Royal Naval Reserve is enjoying the best of both worlds A mum-of-three from Lincolnshire has described how joining the Royal Naval Reserve has allowed her to pursue a life in the military whilst being a hands-on mum. Lieutenant Victoria Rogers, aged 43, joined the Royal Naval Reserve HMS Sherwood five years ago and is now an Amphibious Warfare Officer providing support to the regular navy. Victoria had originally wanted to join the Regulars but after careful consideration decided against it. Victoria said: “I decided it would be too difficult to join full-

the ranks to hopefully become Lieutenant Commander.” Victoria said that she believes she is providing a positive female role model for her three sons. She said: “My children are really proud of me, and I think it is good for them to see their mum taking part in typically male associated activities, whilst their Dad stays at home and cares for them. It challenges the familiar gender stereotypes and it has made them well-rounded and respectful of everyone they meet.” Encouraging others to follow in her footsteps, Victoria explains why she would encourage other

It would have also meant a lot of moving around and I didn’t think that would be fair on them. “I had met so many lovely people on my journey to join the Regulars that I didn’t want to let it go, which was how the Reserves came about. It has allowed me to balance family life with a career in the military.” Victoria said that being at sea is something that she has really enjoyed. “I have been to sea a number of times in my role, once for two months aboard HMS Ocean on Op Ruman and two weeks aboard Lyme Bay working with the French Navy,” she said. “My ambitions are to go to sea more and to continue to climb

It’s just like a hobby that you get paid for. I really enjoy coming to the Unit once a week and I have met many lovely like-minded people.” She concludes: “I would absolutely recommend a career in the military, it’s one of the best things I have ever done.”

Health & Beauty Daily lives of one million Brits blighted by avoidable sight loss

Poor lifestyle choices and low uptake of eye tests leaving people in the dark Eye health experts today marked National Eye Health Week (23 – 29 Sept) with a stark warning that a million people in the UK are living with avoidable sight loss severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives – leaving them unable to do things such as drive. And worryingly, this number is forecast to rise by 30 per cent by 2030, if we don’t take action now. David Cartwright, Chair of National Eye Health Week explains: “Eyesight declines as part of the natural aging process and some cases of sight loss are still sadly unavoidable but for many simply going for regular eyes tests and adopting a healthier lifestyle could prevent sight loss having a significant impact on our lives and help people to live well for longer.” Your lifestyle can impact your eye health regardless of your genetic predisposition. Being physically active has been shown to reduce your risk of visual impairment by 58

per cent versus somebody with a sedentary lifestyle; whilst ditching a diet high in meat – more than 3.5oz daily (the equivalent of two small sausages) – could help cut your risk of cataract. Research published in the British Medical Journal reveals as many as one in five cases of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the UK’s leading cause of blindness, are caused by tobacco consumption. Making smoking directly responsible for around 120,000 cases of AMD in Britain today. There is also growing evidence to suggest that what we eat and drink can play a role in triggering the onset and progression of AMD. One research study has shown that eating just one portion of fish a week could reduce your risk of developing AMD by as much as 40 per cent, whilst, heavy drinking (three or more standard drinks per day) has been associated with the development of early AMD.

Poor uptake of regular eye tests, once every two years unless advised otherwise by your optometrist, is also a big risk factor for unnecessary sight loss as the early detection and treatment of common eye conditions like glaucoma is essential to avoid irreversible sight loss. Almost 14 million (13.8) of us fail to have regular eye tests yet your optometrist can spot signs of glaucoma years before you may

notice a change in your vision. In fact, there are an estimated 300,000 people living in the UK with undiagnosed glaucoma because they have not had a recent eye test. wDavid Cartwright concludes: “Over the next seven days National Eye Health Week will seek to inspire people to make small lifestyle changes that could make a big difference to their future eye health.”

National Eye Health Week’s six simple sight savers 1. Quit smoking. Smokers have a significantly greater risk of sight loss than non-smokers. Toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke can damage the delicate surface and the internal structure of the eye. This can lead to an increased risk of many eye conditions including AMD; nuclear cataracts; thyroid eye disease; dry eye and impaired colour vision. 2. Eat right for good sight. Most of us have no idea that what we eat can affect how well we see, however, eye-friendly nutrients found in many fruit and vegetables and fatty acids derived from fish, nuts and oils can all help protect your sight. Vitamins B and E can help protect against cataracts whilst Omega-3 fish oils help maintain healthy blood vessels inside the eye. 3. Watch your weight. More than half of

34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

all British adults are overweight however maintaining a healthy weight helps preserve macula pigment density, which in turn, helps protect the retina against the breakdown of cells and the onset of AMD. Obesity also puts you at increased risk of diabetic retinopathy and damage to blood vessels in the eye caused by excess body weight has been linked to glaucoma. 4. Get fit. Aerobic exercise can help increase oxygen supplies to the optic nerve and lower any pressure that builds up in the eye. Reducing intraocular pressure can help control conditions such as glaucoma. LEAST 99 per cent of UVA and UVB light. Look out for a CE or British Standard or UV 400 mark when choosing your sunglasses as this

indicates they provide adequate UV protection. 6. Be screen smart. On average, we spend more than eight hours a day staring at a screen so it’s no surprise that 90 per cent of us say we experience screen fatigue – tired or irritated eyes, blurred vision, headaches and poor colour perception. Avoid eye strain by using the 20-20-20 rule, especially if you’re using a computer for long periods of time. Look 20 feet in front of you every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. And, don’t forget to book an eye test during National Eye Health Week if you haven’t had one in the last two years. For more information and advice about looking after your eyes visit www.visionmatters.org.uk.

British Food

Fortnight

21st September – 6th October 2019 Held in the autumn at the same time as harvest festival, British Food Fortnight is the biggest annual, national celebration of British food and drink. It was established in the wake of the Foot and Mouth crisis, in response to the fact that, though there are numerous food initiatives, projects and events taking place across Britain, there was no overall flagship event to bring them to the public’s attention. Since its beginnings in 2002, British Food Fortnight has become THE opportunity for those who work in any aspect of food and drink, to

come together and promote the benefits of buying and eating from our home produced British larder. In setting a particular date range, it concentrate efforts across sectors. Hundreds of activities take place across the UK during British Food Fortnight. The event is the biggest showcase of food on the national calendar with celebrations including promotions, tastings and special menus in pubs, restaurants and shops, special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs.

Organic September

Organic September is a monthlong campaign which aims to raise awareness of Organic products, and the brands, producers and farmers who bring them to us in the UK. Foods labelled as organic must meet strict regulations on how they have been grown and produced. All organic food companies and farms are inspected yearly to ensure that they meet the high standards required for organic food under European law. When you buy organic you can be sure that the products you are buying: • Contain no artificial additives or preservatives. • Contain fewer pesticides. There are only 20 pesticides that can be used by organic farmers all of which are derived from natural ingredients. This

is compared to almost 300 pesticides used in regular farming. • Conform to high standards of animal welfare. • Contain no genetically modified ingredients. • Have been produced in a way that is sustainable. It’s easy to get involved, just look for the organic logo or why not think about growing your own! The Soil Association says that by switching just one item in your shop to organic will help contribute to changing our food system, buying more organic food means more organic farms so fewer pesticides which is better for our wildlife and means more farm animals raised under higher welfare standards.

Home Decor Trends for Autumn As the weather changes we all think about snuggling down on darker nights or maybe you fancy injecting some colour to keep you alert.

Retro Fusion

Global Essence

The first interior design trend is Retro Fusion. This nostalgic trend celebrates and reimages mid century home interiors and designs from a bygone era. The colour palettes of the 1950’s and 70’s like greens and mustards and 1920’s art décor all fits in with this trend. Clean lines and contemporary designs combined with brass and wood can be found here.

Consumers are looking for authentic handcrafted homeware products that take influence from around the globe. They want products with a layer of interest that tell a story. Rugs, wall hangings, wicker baskets and pottery are perfect for this look. Handmade imperfections are celebrated, and no two things are the same.

Nordic Retreat

Refined Glamour

The serene Scandinavian style is updated with hints of patterns and textures. Homewares following this trend are used to create a calm and quiet space. Neutral colours, bleached woods, and simplistic styles is prevalent here. Sustainability and eco-friendly products are particularly popular with this home decor trend.

This home decor trend dresses are home with an understated elegance. It’s less shiny than glamour trends we’ve seen before and more sophisticated. Opulence is the perfect word to describe this style. Fringing is and will continue into the future to be a micro-trend that fits under refined glamour.

Choosing Kitchen Flooring

Are you trying to decide which type of flooring is right for your kitchen? The kitchen is often the most walked-through and public areas of the house. With so many different types of floors out there, it can be hard work knowing which one is most suitable. The good news is there ate many types of floor for the kitchen - it comes down to the look and feel you’re hoping to achieve, whether or not you have additions such as underfloor heating, as well as lifestyle considerations like having children or pets around. Useful questions to ask yourself In order to determine which flooring is right for you, there are a few questions you should ask yourself. These include: • What type of atmosphere am I looking to create? • How much maintenance am I willing to put in? • How many people will be passing through the kitchen? Atmosphere and style: If you’re looking to add a rustic, high-end look then hardwood flooring would be better suited. Or, if you’re looking for a modern floor, laminate might be the best choice. So think carefully about what look you’d prefer and the feeling you’re wanting to create in the room. Maintenance: Of course, it’s all well and good choosing a floor based solely upon how it looks, but maintenance is another thing you need to consider. All flooring types require some maintenance, but solid wood for example, is typically higher maintenance than other flooring

types. Are you prepared to put in daily maintenance? If not, you’d likely be better off with vinyl which is one of the easiest types of floors to maintain. Durability: Another important factor to consider is its durability. It tends to be one of the most used rooms in the home, especially for larger families or households with pets. With this in mind, you need to make sure whichever floor you do choose, it is durable and strong enough to withstand high daily foot traffic and activity. Understanding the pros and cons of different flooring types Each lounge flooring type comes with its own pros and cons. Understanding the benefits of each flooring type will help you to make a wiser decision. Below you’ll discover some of the main pros and cons of each flooring:

42 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Vinyl – Vinyl is commonly installed within the kitchen or bathroom due to its easy maintenance design. It’s also one of the cheapest types of flooring available. These days you can find vinyl which mimics the appearance of real wood and tiles so style-wise you’ll easily find one to match the look you’re going for. Laminate – Laminate is cheaper than solid wood, but still provides the same kind of style to the room. It’s easier to install and maintain and is available in hundreds of different designs. It’s colder than carpet, but is a popular lounge flooring choice in UK homes. Tiles – Glazed ceramic flooring tiles have a hard protective top layer that makes the tiles impervious to water and most stains, making them naturally resistant to the ravages of high humidity conditions. This is the main reason why tile is preferred for wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens. Ceramic flooring is extremely tough, and the

tiles are difficult to crack. A quality installation can last for hundreds of years if the floor is well-maintained. If a single tile does crack due to a severe impact, the process of replacing a tile is relatively simple. Stone - There’s a great variety of stone flooring available including the most popular marble, travertine and slate. Because of the variations in pattern and colour, stone gives your kitchen flooring a unique, earthy look. Stone flooring is naturally cool so it could be worthwhile to consider adding under floor heating to warm the floors in the winter. Just beware as certain stones may stain, requires routine sealing, some fragile stones like slate may chip easily. Overall the possibilities are endless when you’re looking for flooring. The above tips will help you to establish which one is right for your home. Whichever type you choose, your next job is to work your way through the hundreds of different designs to choose from!

Winter Maintenance

Prepping your home for the cold weather ahead! Frost Damage All external decorating should be finished and remedial work using sand and cement mortar should be done before the Autumn temperature falls, because frost can affect this sort of work badly. Frost damage will affect the structural integrity of cement and mortar, and you don’t want to be doing the job twice! On a building site for example, sand and cement work is not allowed to commence unless the temperature is at least 3° and rising. Heating Checks Now is the time to check your heating is working. Don’t wait until you need it, give it a trial-run in Autumn to make sure that it is working properly. This means that if you need repairs to your boiler or heating system you can book it in before you really miss your central heating. It’s also handy to do this now as most plumbers’ prices rise during the winter. Book a Central Heating Service Preparing for the cold weather should be done now and your boiler, or other heating should be serviced (by a competent, registered person) in Summer or Autumn. Do not wait for cold weather to find out that something is not working properly. Heating engineers get really busy at the beginning of the cold winter weather, as customers turn on their heating and find a pump has seized or a pilot light won’t light. Beat the rush by booking your annual boiler service now if you haven’t yet had your boiler serviced, it isn’t too late. Expansion Tank Maintenance If you have a feed and expansion tank in the loft you can carry out a simple test to make sure it’s working well, by moving the float arm up and down a couple of times while

watching to check the valve lets in water and then shuts the water off. This means you can effect your own repairs or it will at least can save you time and money by finding the fault with your heating system before you call a heating engineer. Loft Insulation Autumn is a good time to top up your home insulation. Do you know how much loft insulation you should have? While you are in the loft, make sure you have a depth of at least 270mm of loft insulation. This often means raising the level of your loft floor if you use your loft for storage. Make sure it is laid away from the roof eaves to let in air for loft ventilation, and prevent damp via condensation. Pipework in Your Loft Check pipework in the loft is insulated. Pipes can be insulated using purpose-made pipe insulating foam tubes which are really easy to fit. They are usually a grey coloured dense foam tube. They simply slot over the pipes and help to prevent them freezing. There are also special elbow joint insulating materials, which allow you to insulate bends and corners in your pipes, or you can tape insulating foam or tape around the bends.

Stopcocks and Isolating Valves Check your loft for a stopcock and make sure all stopcocks (this applies to the whole house) are working. Give isolating valves a quick turn and test to make sure they do turn off the supply. Including these checks in your Autumn maintenance regime means that if you do get a water leak or a frozen pipe you can be confident that you can turn off the water supply. Stop the Drafts in Your Home Check all door and window draughtproofing, including the letter box. Adding a threshold strip to external doors is quick and easy way to stop draughts and save money on heating. Check Exterior Walls Pick a bright Autumn day to have a look at pointing and brickwork to make sure there are no cracks or flaking that need to be repaired. Water can find its way into the smallest defect so be sure to look carefully. You can use a pair of binoculars to save you climbing a ladder or erecting scaffolding for a visual check. As a final check, make sure there is no soil or other debris build up against any house walls which could cause a breach of your damp proof course.

Check Air Vents and Air Bricks Check that air bricks are clear of dirt and debris to ensure you get a proper flow of air under your suspended floor which helps prevent condensation and wet and dry rot. Make sure that trickle vents in windows are clear of debris. Trickle vents allow you to have a flow of air in the room when windows are shut tight without experiencing a draft. Roof Maintenance Use binoculars or a camera with a good zoom lens to check the condition of your roof. If you have cracked or slipped tiles, damaged flashing, or valleys and gullies that are full of debris, you will need to hire scaffolding to carry out maintenance. Otherwise you should get quotes from reputable roofing companies to carry out repairs before the damage becomes more serious. Check Outside Taps If you have an external tap, make sure both the pipes and tap itself is insulated to prevent freezing. Fit a Water Butt There is unlikely to be a shortage of water over the winter period, but you can take advantage of seasonal special offers by buying a water butt and fitting it now. It will have plenty of time to fill up over the winter!

Suzuki Swift Attitude 2019 Suzuki’s Swift is a good seller for the Japanese automaker. And now it hopes the latest Swift Attitude will boost sales even higher. The special edition model is anticipated to account for up to 40 per cent of all Suzuki Swift sales in Britain during 2019 and beyond. The £14,599 Attitude is centred around the midspec SZ-T grade but includes a slightly sportier body kit, a new spoiler, a mesh grille and 16-inch alloys. However, where the standard Swift SZ-T trim houses a 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit, poke in the Attitude come from a non-turbocharged 1.2 Dualjet powerplant. This has been harvested from the basic SZ-3, driving the wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The Attitude’s engine may sound a bit lame in comparison with a turbo assisted one, but it’s still a fun, nimble hatch to drive. This is because the car only weighs 980kg and has a short wheelbase. The Swift Attitude is forgiving, too. You can chuck the little tyke into corners at the last second without any worry that the Suzuki might have a tantrum.

Indeed, the car almost enjoys being driven hard. Of course, the Attitude is not a hot-hatch, but it’s a seriously engaging supermini – if burning along twisty rural lanes is your thing. Mind you; its offthe-line performance isn’t quite so exciting. A zero to 62mph time of 11.9 seconds isn’t going to mean you’ll be changing your underwear any time soon. The Swift isn’t unacceptably underpowered, though - its light weight helps with this; you just need to stir the gears hard and keep your right foot down to feel the speed. The car is also economical, returning over 50mpg on an average run. When it comes to ride quality, you’ll find the Swift Attitude comfortable, for four-up. And even though the cabin is awash with plastics and the steering column doesn’t have reach adjustment, it offers a lot for just £14,599. Certainly, for this amount, the Suzuki is a sensible second car, or it could even serve as the main car for a small family.

BusinessFocus

Chapmans Business Solutions Ltd Accoun ting, taxation and bookkeeping ser vices.

Paul Chapman incorporated Chapmans Business Solutions Ltd in 2014. The aim, to offer an affordable accounting, taxation and bookkeeping service for small to medium sized businesses in the local area. Offering services from tax returns for hobby businesses through to year end accounts & tax returns for Limited Companies. Since setting up in 2014 the practice has grown tremendously taking on premises on Pinchbeck Road in Spalding & employing a further two accountants (Jamie and Rebekah) and an administrator (Hannah) to help Paul keep up with the growing client demands. In 2019, due to the outstanding effort made by Jamie the decision was made to promote him to the position of Director. Together Paul and Jamie’s aim has been to maintain a high level of customer service whilst maintaining affordability for the client. CBS is licensed and regulated by the Association of Accounting Technicians, who hold all of their licensed accounting practices to the highest standard; which includes carrying out compliance checks and ensuring the continued professional development of all it’s members. Having been an early adopter of cloud based accounting software, CBS have embraced HMRC’s new Making Tax Digital regulations and have been working closely with Xero for a number of years to help clients with the move over to a new way of bookkeeping. Having championed cloud software for so long the team also has a vast knowledge of Sage, Quickbooks, Kashflow and a number of other niche software packages. Key to CBS’s approach to business, Paul says, has been to build a close relationship with each

of our clients in order to ensure we are fully aware of our clients circumstances, which in turn allows us to offer the best possible service. This is why initial consultations are free of charge, so that clients don’t fear a large bill landing on their doormat just for us to get to know them. Our client’s opinions matter to us, as we are looking to build long term relationships with business owners. See below what some of our customers have to say about us:We have used CBS for a number of years now and have always been very happy with the service provided. They are quick to respond, efficient and pro-active in their accounting. We believe they are able to save us a significant sum every year by advising the best approach to our finances. CBS are a pleasure to deal with being a small family business who take a more personal approach to accounting. We have dealt with big firms in the past and find it hard work compared. We highly recommend them to any business small or large to get the job done to a high professional standard. Aneta Kilham – Fentech Ltd Always been happy with Paul and Jamie’s work ethic. They have always kept us one step ahead of our Tax and VAT obligations, enabling us to spend more of our time looking after our jobs and customers. Clive Lowe – Construction & Renovation Ltd Have used these guys for a year now and helped us start up our own taxi company, very professional and at the end of the phone when i need them, competitive rates and helpful, would recommend.
