Welcome to the January issue

Contents

Welcome to the first issue of 2020! A new year is an opportunity to reflect on the passing year as well as being full of anticipation and excitement for what is to come. In our household 2019 has been an exciting one as our son started school in September and already it has been amazing to see him grow and learn new skills but I do feel we have lost a part of him. We certainly make the most of weekends and school holidays now. We are definitely a family that likes to pull on their wellies and get out and about whatever the weather. We have a few trips planned for 2020 but will be exploring UK soil for this year with a couple of camping trips in the diary, I am still working on my husband to agree a trip to Center Parcs! Back to the issue and we are trying to inspire you with ideas to either move or improve your home, the history of Holbeach, Tim test drives Renault’s all new Grand Scenic and we look at owning a pet. If you can are struggling to make one new years’ resolution and want to help the area you live please try to think about where you spend your money; be it for fruit and veg, bread, meat, a new fence, repairs to your house or buying clothes or cosmetics. If we all made a conscious effort to support our independent shops and traders we can dramatically change the local economy, investment in the high street and improve the area we live. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and once again wish you a happy new year!

Award-winning chef launches ‘pop-up’ kiosk at Springfields! Damian Wawrzyniak is the masterchef behind Peterborough’s House of Feasts, which has just been awarded Casual Dining Restaurant of the Year for the East Midlands; and now he brings his signature Central and Eastern European treats to Springfields Outlet, the leading shopping and leisure destination in the East of England. Damian is internationally renowned, having previously worked at the two Michelin-starred restaurant NOMA in Copenhagen. Damian has previously catered for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and cooked at the 2012 Olympics. He also recently teamed-up with organic baby food brand Piccolo to create gourmet food for babies. His Pierogi Kiosk concept is bringing Eastern European pierogi (filled dumplings), sourdough bread sandwiches and desserts direct to Springfields from House of Feasts in specially designed American Airstream style trailers. Pierogi are made by wrapping unleavened dough around a savoury or sweet filling and cooking in boiling water, or pan-frying. Damian Wawrzyniak – Chef and Founder of House of Feasts said: “I want to bring Eastern European food to a wide audience and Springfields Outlet is the perfect destination for

our next Pierogi Kiosk. For busy shoppers on-thego, these delicious dumplings are ideal. If you know them, you know how good they are! “For me, it’s always been about introducing diners to Polish dishes with a British twist.” Simon Stone, Retail Director of Springfields Outlet said: “Offering a wide choice of fantastic food and drink has always been our aim at Springfields. Damian’s Pierogi Kiosk will be an

innovative addition to the offer, a perfect treat for shopping trips. “Anyone who has been fortunate enough to visit Damian’s restaurant will be well aware of the quality of the delicious food being served up. We feel really honoured that he has chosen Springfields Outlet.” Damian’s latest Pierogi Kiosk is now open at Springfields until May 2020.

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages.... Also worth a visit is the major exhibition at The Collection, in Lincoln, entitled, “Victoria & Albert – Treasures from a Royal Marriage”. There are some stunning paintings and exhibits mainly from the Victoria and Albert Museum, many rarely seen outside London. The election is at last over, although at the time of writing, I am not aware of the result, but hopefully whatever the outcome it can provide some certainty to boost the economy both nationally and locally, put more money into people’s pockets and have a knock on effect to our high streets. The New Year is a time for optimism to look forward to new challenges and opportunities. In both Holbeach and Spalding expect to see consultation events to find out from you what you

think will make a difference to our town centres, where investment should be spent and what we can do to encourage more people into the two town centres. It will be a challenge and won’t be easy, but please do let us know your thoughts through this magazine and we will make sure they are included in the process. This needs to be driven by you bottom up not top down. Meanwhile, enjoy the holidays, make the most of our local shops, eateries and pubs and make that New Year resolution – shop local, eat local and we will all reap the benefits.

Nick

Advice Your Notice Period When Resigning If you want to leave your job you’ll normally need to give your employer notice. The amount needed should be in your contract. If there’s nothing in your contract or terms and conditions, you should give at least one week’s notice. It’s best to resign in writing, so there’s no argument about when you did it. Send a letter or email saying: • how much notice you’re giving • when you expect your last day at work to be You can give more notice than your contract says - your employer can’t make you leave earlier. If they do make you leave earlier, this counts as sacking you. You should check if you can claim unfair dismissal. Your notice period starts the day after you resign. This means if you give a week’s notice on Monday your last day at work will be the next Monday. If you have not discussed a notice period and do not have anything in writing, then you should give at least one week’s notice. However, if your employer insists that you agreed to stay longer, ask them what records they have that supports this. Ask your employer if they’ll agree to reduce your notice period. Reassure them that leaving early won’t cause them any problems by agreeing to finish any urgent work. It can be worth reminding them that letting you leave early will mean they don’t have to pay you for as long. If your employer doesn’t agree, but you want to leave early anyway, think about whether this would cost them any money. For example, if they’d need to get expensive agency staff to replace you at short notice, they could take you to court. If you leave early, your employer still has to pay you for work you’ve done. If they

refuse to pay, check what you’re owed and how to get it. You don’t need to give notice if you want to leave on the last day of your contract. If you want to leave before the last day of your contract, check if the contract says you can give notice. If it doesn’t say anything, you should give at least one week’s notice. You should get your full normal pay if you work during your notice period. This should include any work benefits you get (pension contributions or free meals. If you’re off sick or on maternity, paternity or adoption leave you’ll only get whatever you would have been normally paid in those circumstances (e.g. statutory sick pay if you are ill.) However, you’re entitled to full pay for one week of your notice period, whether you give notice of only one week or more than that. If you don’t get paid for working your notice period, check how to get the wages you’re owed. You should get the same amount of pay if your employer wants you to stop working as soon as you resign. Your employer might either: • pay all your notice pay at once and dismiss you straight away - this is called pay in lieu of notice or PILON • pay you as usual until the end of your notice period when your contract ends - this is sometimes called garden leave You can ask to take holiday in your notice period, but it’s up to your employer to decide if you can. If you go on paid holiday

in your notice period you’re entitled to your usual wage. When you leave you’ll be paid for any holiday you have accrued but not taken, up to your first 28 days of holiday entitlement. This is called your statutory holiday entitlement. If you get more than 28 days a year (including bank holidays), this is called contractual holiday. Check what your contract says about leftover contractual holiday. You might still get paid for any days you don’t use. Your employer can tell you to use up any holiday you have left over. They’ll also need to tell you when to take it. Check your contract to see how far in advance your employer should tell you to take holiday. If there’s nothing in your contract, they need to give you at least 2 days’ notice for each day of holiday (e.g. if they want you to take five days, they’ll need to give you ten notice days).

Ayscoughfee Hall School Christmas has been a blast at Ayscoughfee Hall School! The children in Kindergarten, Reception and Years 1 and 2 have been busy performing their Nativities to parents, grandparents and invited guests from Tanglewood and Georgian Court. The PTFA organised the ever popular Christmas Fete and we were delighted to welcome a very special guest in a sleigh! Years 3 to 5 took decorations to a local Christmas Tree festival whilst Year 6 visited the Baptist Church to enjoy ‘Christmas Unwrapped’. The Choir performed in the local schools Choir Competition and we still have the Pantomime and parties to enjoy. The last day of term will be celebrated as always with a traditional Carol Concert in Church.

Sport continues to play a large part in school life, with all the Cross Country teams winning their group race in the recent Agilitas Cross Country competition. We have also celebrated success in local hockey at Surfleet, with the A team winning their group competition. Cookery lessons have now finished with each child from Year 2 upwards taking home their very own Christmas pudding and younger children baking stained glass window biscuits. Year 6 children entered the Dragon’s Den to make their pitches to our very own Dragons. Having discussed, designed and made prototypes of their own innovations we are convinced that the future of British technology and design is in safe hands.

Boston College Boston College is celebrating after being ranked joint 5th out of over 180 Further Education colleges across the whole country. The result comes from the NICDEX 2019 national league table, which is compiled annually using official performance measures from the Department for Education (DFE). Points are awarded against four quality of provision measures; Learner Satisfaction, Employer Satisfaction, 16-18 year olds Positive Progression, Adults into Employment Progression. Overall the College scored an impressive 31 out of a possible 40 points, with exceptionally high scores in Employer Satisfaction (10/10) and Learner Satisfaction (9/10). This evidences the commitment and skill of the College’s staff team in ensuring a high quality learner experience which links closely to industry

and employer requirements. Speaking of the results, Vicki Locke, Vice Principal – Curriculum and Quality said, “This is a fantastic achievement for the College. Results like this only come from a team effort and being closely focused on what matters most to learners. We have a clear and simple vision which is ‘to be a brilliant college and for every learner to be brilliant’. Ensuring our learners have the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to successfully progress into higher education or to employment is pivotal to our vision. We are very proud to receive this recognition in this year’s national league tables.”

Mini Police

Scam Awareness is one of the Lincolnshire Mini Police ‘National Priorities’ which means over the course of two years, all of our Mini Police schools will learn about to protect members of their families and communities from being caught out by a scam which could potentially mean they could lose their life savings and put them into financial difficulty. Pupil Voice is strong in the Mini Police program so helping them to recognise the scams is a brilliant tool for them to talk about and share their learning to help others. We could all potentially fall victim to one kind of scam or another, they happen so quick we ask children to; Take Five – • Never tell people your personal details.~ • Don’t assume everyone is genuine especially when contacting through those 4 methods Online, Postal, Doorstep and Telephone. • Don’t be rushed into anything, take five minutes, speak to a true friend about whether it could be genuine. • Listen to your instincts and • Stay in control. The package we teach has been written in Lincolnshire by our own PC Mel Standbrook in conjunction with Stuart Tweedale – Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner and children from two different primary schools in Lincolnshire; Spilsby Primary Academy and Cranwell Primary. The program is now available for all schools nationally as the official “Friends Against Scams - Trading Standards” product who partner with Lincolnshire Police to stop this fight against scams. We teach our Mini Police classes in Year 5 & Year 6 to recognise four types of scams – Phone, Online, Doorstep and Postal scams the Mini Police then make a promise to spread the message into their communities. Your average primary school pupil won’t be a victim to any of these mainly due to what they can access because of their age but with teenagers being caught out more and more often as money mules it is important that

we give them tips to protect themselves and others from becoming a target for example; parents, grandparents, neighbour’s and friends. We challenge our Mini Police to learn to recognise obvious signs of scams – from excessive junkmail to automated phonecalls, phishing emails and fake offers. We then challenge them to go out into their local community – from local shops to coffee mornings and members’ clubs around their area – to share the knowledge and make as many people aware of scams as possible. ello! And a Happy Hound New Year to you all! I hope my column finds you well? The other night, just before my human tucked me into my basket, I noticed that she had put her once pink, now muddy brown wellies next to the door, with my lead and her furry black welly socks perched on top. Well! As you can imagine, I drifted off into doggy dreamland very much looking forward to the next day. I was so excited that I woke up bright and early. ‘Woof woof!’ I barked. Where was everyone? ‘WOOF WOOF!!!’ My human stumbled downstairs. ‘Let’s go!’ I wagged, enthusiastically. ‘Let’s not,’ she replied, ‘it’s 3am.’ So, where did we go (once my human had got several coffees into her)? Did we get in the car for a big adventure? Nope! We reduced my carbon pawprint by keeping it local and taking in the tracks and trails alongside our village fields. My human and I ambled along, admiring the neverending Lincolnshire sky. We could see for miles out in the crisp, chilly countryside. What a region we live in! My human disappeared further under her hat and scarf, while I disappeared further under the hedges and long grasses we found.

My human’s nose started running – and so did I! I picked up the pace to get her home to a hot drink (and a snack for me, of course). After watching her flailing around to get her wellies off, I trundled upstairs to settle down on my little boy’s bed, taking him a dog toy that I found on the kitchen floor, for good measure. ‘Nice walk?’ he asked me, kindly. ‘Never had a bad one!’ I thought to myself as I chewed on the toy. He gave me a nice scratch behind my ears. ‘If you want to go out again, you should probably stop gnawing on mum’s welly sock.’ Ooops!

Otis

Family Life

What kind of pet is best for my home? The perfect pet for you can be dependent on the type of home that you live in. Flats and houses, as well as those that have (or do not have) a garden can have a surprising impact on which pets are right for you. To help you figure out which animal is best suited to your home, we have put together this helpful guide – giving you a better idea of your options. House If you live in a house, then you will often have a little more space than a flat. This means that you can have a slightly wider variety of pets living with you in your home. Of course, if you do not have a garden, then it may not be suitable for most breeds of dog – especially those with high energy levels. Here is a list of pets that are suited to your home: • Rabbits (indoor) • Cats (indoor or outdoor) • Dogs with low energy levels • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Large birds • Fish • Turtles

Flat If you live in a flat, then you often do not have a great deal of space for your pets to run around. As a result, large dogs and those with high energy levels are often not suited to this kind of accommodation. Here is a list of pets that are most suited to your home: • Rabbits (indoor) • Cats (indoor) • Small dogs with low energy levels • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Fish • Turtles House with garden If you have a house with a garden, there are a wider range of pets available to you. Of course, your garden should be a secure one before you get any pets – especially those that you do not want to escape. Here is a list of pets that would be suited to your home: • Rabbits (indoor or outdoor) • Guinea Pigs

• Ferrets • Cats (indoor or outdoor) • Dogs • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Large birds • Fish • Turtles House with land and facilities Some houses have land and additional facilities like stables and equestrian areas. For these homes, your options are even broader, and you can enjoy the opportunity to have just about any pet you like living comfortably in your home. Here is a list of pets that you can benefit from: • Rabbits (indoor or outdoor) • Guinea Pigs • Ferrets • Cats (indoor or outdoor) • Dogs • Horses • Donkeys • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Large birds • Fish • Turtles

Did you Know? 1. Most hamsters are actually crepuscular, which means that they’re not nocturnal, they prefer twilight hours. 2. Tarantulas can regenerate lost legs when they go through a molt. 3. Male puppies will often let female puppies win when playing. 4. No two dog noses are the same. They are the equivalent to our fingerprints. 5. It takes about 60 bones to make the shell of a turtle

Latest findings from PDSA showed that: • 50% of UK adults own a pet. • 24% of UK adults have a cat with an estimated population of 10.9 million pet cats • 26% of the UK adult population have a dog with an estimated population of 9.9 million pet dogs • 2% of the UK adult population have a rabbit with an estimated population of 900,000 pet rabbits www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 17

Pollywiggle Cottage Pollywiggle Cottage is a charming 3 bedroom Victorian cottage in the popular coastal village of Heacham available for short breaks and holidays. Just over an hour’s drive away it really is the gateway to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

T

he cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & bunk) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets - travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs as well as a BBQ. Or on those winter nights you can warm up in front of the open fire. There is also complementary wifi & parking to the rear of the property. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels! The Local Area Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. It’s a 20-30 minute stroll along the promenade into Hunstanton where you will find an array of restaurants, amusements, fair rides, SeaLife Centre, swimming pool and much more. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern

England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, McColls, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast. Pollywiggle Cottage is always well reviewed and every tripadvisor rating is either 4 or 5 stars! Here’s what our guests say: “Stayed for 4 nights in April with 13 month old daughter and our dog. Perfect little cottage in a handy location. Well equipped for babies, with high chair, travel cot, video monitor, black out blind and even toys! Shops, bakery, butchers, Indian/Chinese/ chippy takeaways all in walking distance as is the beach. Handy to have its own parking (all be it a bit tight for two cars). Nice safe enclosed garden for the dog and dog bowls & blankets provided. We even got amazing weather! Thank you.” “We have just returned from another wonderful weekend at the beautiful Pollywiggle cottage. We found the owners really have thought of everything you may need to make the stay feel like home from home. If your traveling with children they have all the essentials and more! There’s a toy box in the children’s room which kept our 3 entertained for hours. A baby monitor, stair gates, blackout blind, bed

rail.. you name it, it’s there! They even have the fur babies covered too with dog bowls, crates and balls! The cottage is very clean and tastefully decorated. We loved having the open fire roaring away on a cold winter evening! It really is the perfect place to warm up and relax with a glass of wine after a chilly afternoon walking on the beach. There are a few pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. We can highly recommend the Spice garden for an evening meal and the Bushel and Strike for a pint. The Bushel is very dog friendly and has a children’s playground. We would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return in the summer.” “Second stay at the property. It’s just so cosy and lovely. Great location and the owner is very friendly and helpful. Perfect for a break away with your dogs. Quiet comfortable and clean :-) planning to go back next year too. Love it Thanks for the goody bags too much appreciated and really made it extra special!” “Lovely cottage with all the cosy extras (log fire/ blankets/ lighting ) with modern touches. Very clean and well-kept and with a parking space at the rear, with plenty more road parking close by. It is within walking distance of a number of pubs and beaches. Sleep 2 x Doubles and Bunk (3 Bedrooms) Welcoming for all ages and 2 fur babies.. (dogs). I will be returning again in the new year. Nice to find a clean wellpresented accommodation that makes you feel like it is “home from home”.

The most popular funeral songs for a perfect send off

If you’re facing the prospect of having to choice the music for a funeral? It’s a bit like Desert Island Discs, choosing the funeral songs that mean something to you or finding the best tunes for a loved ones’ farewell can be challenging too. Where once it was Debussy’s Clair de Lune that sent the funeral congregation reaching for their handkerchiefs, today it’s more likely to be modern funeral songs like Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’, or Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’. These changes reflect how more people are opting for a funeral as a celebration of life over a traditional service. To give you some inspiration, here’s a selection of popular funeral songs as well as some more unusual choices.

Sad funeral songs fe • I’ll See You Again Westli a Cassidy • Over the Rainbow - Ev - Bette • Wind Beneath My Wings Midler You • Nothing Compares to or Sinead O’Conn Pink • Wish You Were Here – Floyd

Poignant and uplifting funeral songs As you’d expect, sad songs feature highly in most top 10 funeral song lists. It’s not hard to see why some of these poignant and uplifting qualities are popular choices.

Happy funeral songs • Always Look on the Bri ght Side of Life – Monty Python’s Lif e of Brian • Bring Me Sunshine – Mo recambe and Wise • Don’t Worry. Be Happ y – Bobby McFerrin • What a Wonderful Wo rld – Louis Ar mstrong • You Are the Sunshine of My Life – Stevie Wonder

The team at Molsom & Associates win Customer Care category at the South Holland Business Awards 2019 After winning Small Business of the year at the awards last year, the team at Molsom & Associates were thrilled to learn they had been short listed in the categories of Business Innovation and Customer Care at the South Holland Business awards 2019.

A

ttending the presentation evening on the 14th November at Springfield’s event centre the team eagerly waited for the awards to be announced. Molsom & Associates were shortlisted for the business innovation category for the work they offer within the local school community relating to children’s eyesight. During these visits the introduction of interactive workshops, new complimentary gift bags and, of course, Molsom Mole has really engaged young children in their eye health and how they can look after their precious sight. Although they did not win this award the team were very happy to receive a Highly Commended award for the work they have put into this area. The big moment came when the winner of the Customer Care award was announced, with Molsom & Associates winning the category. They have worked on extending many appointment times to 40 minutes, giving their patients the time and care their eyesight deserves. They have also implemented a Platinum Eyecare Plan; providing members with advanced eye examinations whenever they are required. The membership also includes appointments for

specialist services provided at the local town centre Opticians, such as red eye and flashes and floaters appointments. Andy Molsom, business owner and Optician added “I am really happy the team have had their hard work recognised. We treat each patient as an individual providing the best optical solution we can, tailored to that patient’s needs. The staff go above and beyond because they

genuinely care about our patients. Our Quality Family Eyecare motto stems from our principles as a team, so we are elated to be presented with this fantastic award!” The team are always working on moving forward and making their patients’ experience with them a happy one. At the minute they are planning a refit or possible relocation of the practice within Spalding, should the right opportunity present itself. Being able to provide tea and coffee facilities and have more room in general for all of the services provided would be fantastic. So watch this space in 2020. Dispensing Manager Andrew Copley added “Seeing the way the team relates to all our patients,

making no distinction between how they treat someone wanting their glasses cleaned and someone who may want multiple pairs of new glasses, makes me incredibly proud of them all. This award is a testament to everyone’s desire to put a smile on everyone’s face who visits our practice.” The practice is happy to take new patients of all ages private or NHS and the Platinum Eyecare Plan is open to patients new, existing or returning. Members will also gain the benefits from day one and enjoy exclusive discounts and offers during their membership. So do not hesitate in contacting the team on 01775 713366 to book your appointment or visit the website www.molsom.co.uk

Holbeach a Town wi th History

Holbeach was awarded a market charter in 1252. The superb 14th century All Saints church incorporates parts of an earlier medieval castle. The 18th-century antiquarian William Stukeley was born in Holbeach in 1785.

History Holbeach is one of several communities which grew up around the Wash. Reclamation of fenland means that Holbeach is now one of the largest parishes in East Anglia. Until the 19th century, Holbeach was 2 miles from the sea, but major drainage programmes in the 18th-19th centuries mean that the town is now 9 miles distant from the shore. In 1252 Thomas de Moulton granted Holbeach a market charter, which made it a centre for trade in the South Holland area. The prosperity from that trade helped pay for the superb 14th-century church of All Saints, built partly upon the foundations of De Moulton’s castle.

All Saints Church Holbeach’s parish church was begun in 1225 but most of the current building dates from 1340-1380. The porch was added in 1700, reusing fragments of 14th century stone from Moulton Castle. The chancel arch dates to 1360 and in the chancel is an ornate memorial to John March, who died in 1736. The nave roof is supported on original 14th-century corbel heads. Among the more notable memorials is a table tomb to Sir Humphrey Littlebury of Holbeach Hurn, who died c.1380, and a brass to Joan Welby (d. 1488). One of the most interesting historic buildings in Holbeach is the Mansion House Hotel, built sometime around 1681. It was here that Nobel Prize winner Sir Ralph Norman Angell was born in 1872. Angell was a journalist, lecturer, MP, and author of ‘The Great Illusion’, which first expressed his theory that military and political power give a nation no commercial advantage, and that the countries of Europe had grown so close economically that war between them was futile, making the militarism of his day obsolete. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1933. a plaque on the Hotel exterior commemorates this remarkable man.

Home & Property

Move or Improve?

Is it better to renovate and improve your current home, or move to a new place? If you’re one of the thousands of homeowners puzzling over that question, you’ll know there’s rarely an easy answer. Here are five key factors to consider. 1. Plan and budget Enjoy coming home to a tidy house every day by making use of shelves, hooks and storage boxes in your hallway. Dedicate a box and hook to each member of your family and keep everyone’s outdoor essentials looking spick and span. Using a combination of storage solutions will work wonders for keeping your entrance way clutterfree. If you’re leaning towards renovating... Planning is particularly important if you’re renovating, because the cost of renovating can vary dramatically. You need to keep track of your spending. Make a list of what you need to do to your property, and be strict with yourself when you make it. Focus on what you really need to do, and try to leave off those things you can live without. Once your list is made, try to stick to it as closely as you can. It can be tempting to throw in loads of extra improvements once the work gets started, but this can massively increase the overall cost of the renovation. Think about the future too. Do you have plans to sell your home later? If so, do your research, and check that the renovations you’re making will actually add value. 2. Think about your location So you’ve made your renovate vs move list, and there’s a clear winner in terms of costs. But there are other things to think about too - not least the location of your current property. Your current home might be in the perfect location. You might be near family, or have strong ties to the local community. Or maybe it’s just really convenient, with public transport,

good schools and the nearest doctor’s on your doorstep. A great location is a rare thing. If you can’t find a new house in a similarly great place, it might be better to renovate than move, even if it is a bit more expensive. On the other hand, you might not like where you live, or it might not be suitable for you in the future. If you’re thinking of having children, for example, you might need to be closer to schools and public transport. Even if renovating is cheaper, it might be wise to move to get to a better location. Create a clean look in your bathroom Breathe new life into your bathroom with a chic set of storage units. Hide bottles and brushes away in the drawers and use the display units to put your mirror, favourite plant or prized products at centre stage. Embrace the Scandi trend and plump for crisp white cabinets. This timeless shade is easy to pair with any bathroom colour scheme, whether your walls are sophisticated dove grey or traditional blue. 3. Think about emotional attachments And then there are the intangible things. The things you can’t put a number on. Money’s important, and getting the right location is great, but don’t ignore how you feel. You might simply love your house, and can’t bear to leave it behind. If it makes you happy, it might be worth staying put and renovating, even if the house does have a few problems you can’t fix. 4. Consider if the property is suitable for renovating

32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Before you make your decision, you need to know whether your property is suitable for renovation. Will you need planning permission? If so, will you be able to get it? Making structural changes, such as knocking down walls or adding doors, usually requires planning permission, but internal changes are generally okay. There are exceptions to this, though, so you’ll need to do your homework. And if you want to extend your house, you’ll need to check the boundaries for the garden. There may be strict limits on how big your property can be. Checking the structure of a house isn’t easy, so it might be worth getting in touch with a professional. A property surveyor can help you avoid any costly mistakes. 5. Consider all the costs So you’ve made your budget and put together a meticulous plan, but be sure to take into account the less obvious costs of renovating or moving. For example. if you’re leaning towards renovating... • Storage: If you renovate, you might have to store some of your stuff

elsewhere while the work’s beng done • Pets: Dogs and cats might need somewhere else to go during the renovation, away from all the mess and work going on in your home • House surveys, to check that your house is suitable for renovating • Professional fees: depending on what you want to do with your house, you might need to hire surveyors, architects and other professionals And if you’re leaning towards moving... • Arrangement fees • Valuation fees • Survey fees • Stamp duty • Conveyancing fee • Land registry fee • Moving fees You might not have to pay all of these fees, but just a few of them can add a lot of money to the overall cost of buying your new house. So, should you renovate or move? In the end, it all depends on what you find important. Weigh up the costs, consider what you’ll want in the future, and follow what really makes you happy.

Renault Grand Scenic Multi-purpose vehicles, once about as electrifying to look at as a soggy satsuma, are easier on the eye these days. You could even say they’re desirable, especially the current Renault Grand Scenic. Inside the French-made machine, digital instruments replace the conventional speedo that the old model housed. There’s also a prominent infotainment unit in the middle of the dashboard. If you can operate an iPad – it’ll be like falling off a log for you to use this. It all looks agreeably upmarket. But it’s not all about appearances. Behind the latest Grand Scenic’s stylish body and sporty 20-inch alloy wheels, you have a car that offers a practical transport solution for a family of seven. You never have to worry about where to put stuff as there are loads of oddment bins to keep coins, cans of drink – and toys. Picnic tables in the rear fold-out – and feel sturdy enough to put up with kids leaning on them and eating their lunch on. There are lots of trims to choose from, and I drove the Iconic, which comes with front and rear parking

sensors; DAB radio; cruise control and hill start assist. On the road, the Grand Scenic is agile for a large motor, and visibility is excellent. The car stays relatively free from body roll and offers a firm ride, but not an uncomfortable one. The five-door Renault is planted at speed, and it feels secure. And so it should, having achieved the top five-star safety rating from crash test body, Euro NCAP. The petrol version is the one to go for if you can. My test model had the 1330cc 140ps unit fitted. It gives just enough punch to make the car a good, efficient commuter. Top speed is only 119mph, but in a country besieged by safety cameras, is a fast car even relevant anymore? Not really – what’s more significant is the 40.9mpg the Grand Scenic can achieve with this engine. On top of that, you’ve got lowish CO2 emissions of 139g/km, meaning road tax is relatively cheap. As well as being transport for parents who haven’t given up on what their car looks like yet, the Grand Scenic offers a good seating set-up. In addition to the usual five chairs, two more can be raised from the cargo floor - making this a true seven-seater. Furthermore, one-touch folding seats collapse easily to give a flat floor. Oh, and this Renault is one of the only cars in its class - if not the only one - where you can activate this feature from inside the load area. The Grand Scenic also offers 596 litres of boot space when the five seats are up. And you still have 233-litres of cargo capacity when all seven seats are in use.
