'Fresh Take' contemporary art residency programme and exhibition with Burghley House for 2013 Burghley House, in association with Stamford-based Art Pop-Up, will present an exciting new contemporary art exhibition 'Fresh Take' next year with 6 local artists. The artists, working in variety of media, will be invited to undertake a residency with Burghley House, responding to an element of the house interior and its history, juxtaposing the traditions of Burghley with current contexts, creating a fresh cultural dialogue between past and present. The artists will be selected by an open call process in January 2013, the entry is open to any contemporary artists living and working in the Greater Peterborough area. More details of the submission process will be available on the website www.artpopup. co.uk from the end of December 2012. The new artworks will eschew traditional approaches, and look to be innovative in medium and concept, providing a sympathetic but challenging complement to Burghley House's exceptional collection of

historic paintings and artworks. The new artworks will be exhibited in Burghley's Staterooms from September to November 2013. A series of events for the public, such as artists' talks and workshops, will be held during the exhibition as well as educational visits. House Director Miranda Rock said, “ We are delighted to welcome Fresh Take as a new and exciting approach to art at Burghley and to encourage the endeavours of young and talented local artists.” The project has received funding from Creative Peterborough which is an artist-led network aiming to build relationships within the city's creative community to raise the profile of the arts and culture. Anita Bruce of Creative Peterborough said "We are delighted to support Fresh Take at Burghley, recognising the valuable platform for Peterborough artists that this contemporary art programme and exhibition provides in one of our foremost local heritage sites."

Hills Department Store Winner Announced Beverley Dodds is celebrating this Christmas after being the lucky winner chosen from our competition last month to win a shopping spree worth £500 at Hills Department Store. Beverley visited the store in early December and took full opportunity of the facilities on offer at Spalding’s independent department store. Kicking off with a makeover and recommendations by Lancome specialist Mihaela, then followed a personal shopping tour of the ladies fashions. After a whizz around the cookshop and homeware department we settled down for lunch in Riverview Café where I got the opportunity to talk to Beverley about her win.

As a busy mum of two Beverley commented, “ Like many mums out there I always put myself at the back of the queue when it comes to spending money, so when I got the call to say I had won, not only could I not believe it, I was over the moon. I decided I would give my friends and family a little treat but that I would enjoy spending the money on me for a change! It really has been a lovely morning” Beverley managed to leave the store weighed down with lots of goodies from the store and has a list of things that she will be returning to buy later in 2013. Well done Beverley!

news Holbeach & District Community Vehicle Committee’s ‘Grand Launch’, of its new mini-bus The Holbeach & District Community Vehicle Committee is a registered charity run purely by volunteers. The mini bus provides local groups, clubs and organisations the opportunity to organise trips out, encourage walking trips, sports clubs to go to away matches, youth groups and give elderly people a chance to visit places that would normally be digfficult to organise transport to. The new mini-bus was on show in Holbeach High Street recently and balloons and sweets were given to passing children, and they were invited to guess the number of sweets in the box for 50p a go. The box of sweets was won by Alex Wilson, of Park Road, by coming within one sweet of the 171 in the box. Just over £50 was raised from the guesses and donations. Leaflets

were handed out to interested parties, and it is hoped that more use will be made of the new bus in the future. The Grand Launch continued at Holbeach Football and Social Club for invited guests. District Councillor Rita Rudkin cut the ribbon to officially launch the new vehicle. District Councillor Martin Howard said “A big thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years, and particularly Cllr Webb & Ms Lightfoot for their confidence and support in our Committee, and the generous grant, which contributed to us being able to get the new bus for the benefit of social groups in and around Holbeach” For more information about hiring the bus please contact Martin Howard on 01406 422825.

SHDC’s £14,400 for British Red Cross Helping hands will be reaching out to assist people in crisis across South Holland thanks to the British Red Cross and cash backing from 32 district councillors. A total of £14,400 has been handed over to the charity which will be working across the district to provide practical and emotional support to those in need. The money, donated from the cash kitties of 32 South Holland District Councillors, will help fund the Red Cross’s First Call service. It provides companionship and social visits to those in need, helps them in practical ways with chores such as shopping and helps support individuals and their carers increase their independence. Alison Allenby, First Call Service Co-ordinator for the British Red Cross, said: "We already receive a large of number of requests for help from people in the South Holland area. Although we try our best to help, without a project worker and local volunteers this is very difficult. We are delighted that South Holland District Councillors are able to support us this

John Hayes MP Wins Award The House Magazine honoured ten outstanding parliamentarians at an awards ceremony in Westminster on Wednesday 28th November, 2012. Members of all parties and both Houses gathered in the Members’ Dining Room to see the parliamentarians accept their awards. Our very own John Hayes MP was awarded with Commons Minister of the Year. The ceremony was kindly hosted by Sky News Presenter Adam Boulton; the awards were presented by the Judging Committee and Dirk Vennix from the Association of British Bookmakers, The House Awards 2012 sponsor. Nine of the winners were determined by the votes of parliamentarians and over 400 votes were received. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners’!

year in providing a very real and necessary service and look forward to establishing a First Call presence in the area." Each of the 32 councillors provided £450 for the project. Speaking on behalf of them, SHDC Chairman, Councillor Michael Seymour, said: “This will be money well spent as this is a fantastic service. This is the biggest collective donation that has been made from the Members’ Budgets and shows how the money can be put to good use, making a real difference in our communities.” The Designated Members’ Budget scheme provides £5,000 for each ward member to help fund community projects throughout a financial year. For further information go to www.sholland.gov.uk or contact your ward councillor.

Lincolnshire runners raise £20k for Sport Relief Almost 2,000 runners competing in Sport Relief miles across Lincolnshire raised more than £20,000 for Comic Relief earlier this year. 16 Sport Relief miles took place across the county on the last weekend in March, with 1,756 participants raising a total of £21,324.20. Sport Relief Miles are organised every two years as part of Comic Relief. Carly Gibbs, Senior Community Events Officer at Comic Relief, said: “These local Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Miles were part of a fantastic weekend of Miles which helped enable more than one million people to take part and raise over £65 million nationally. The money raised will change countless lives forever.” Clare Gilman-Abel, Funding Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “Sport Relief is a great way to be active and raise funds for disadvantaged communities in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. It’s great that Lincolnshire could contribute to the national total of more than £65 million – let’s hope we can raise more than £20,000 next time!” Comic Relief is already planning Sport Relief Miles for 2014. school news Holbeach Primary School Theatre group Splatz recently visited the pupils of Holbeach Primary. This involved the whole school in 2 magical productions over 2 days. The younger children performed Jungle Book and school was full of monkeys and tigers. They danced and acted as they re-told the Jungle Book story wearing the animal masks that they had made. It was wonderful to see even the very youngest children taking part with great enthusiasm. Treasure Island, performed by the older children meant pirates invaded Holbeach Primary. Eye patches and bandanas, cutlasses and swords were the uniform of the day! Battles and treasure hunts filled the hall. Pupils really enjoyed taking part and many came in costume for the day. This visit was the beginning of the Christmas

celebrations at Holbeach Primary and was followed by the early Years Nativity play, Christmas dinner, Christmas Craft day and our annual Carols around the tree. It brought to a close a very busy year at Holbeach Primary School and we wish all a peaceful and successful new year.

Ayscoughfee Hall School The children of Ayscoughfee Hall School enjoyed a busy and exciting build up to the Christmas festivities. The infants performed their nativity plays with enthusiasm and confidence and all of the children had great fun at their parties. A special Christmas lunch was enjoyed by all, particularly as the dinners were served by the teachers! The term culminated with the traditional service of carols and readings held in Spalding Parish Church. The school choir had a very busy month, singing in the town centre at the switching on of the Christmas lights. On the following Saturday they gave an excellent performance at Baytree and also sang in the Broad Street Methodist church in a special carol service helping to raise funds for Parkinsons UK. The Year 6 children enjoyed two very good local outings. They visited Swan Street Methodist Church for the annual “Christmas Unwrapped” event. This is an invigorating and thought provoking session where the children watch a retelling of Christmas story and

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils - Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@ simply-spalding.co.uk.

Surfleet Primary school We have had a very busy term especially leading up to Christmas. Reception and Nursery enjoyed a trip to Nene Valley Railway where they saw Santa on the train. Everyone had a fun time. Years 1 & 2 went on a trip to Mrs Smith’s Cottage Museum near Lincoln to see a simple early Victorian cottage. The trip forms part of the work the children have been doing on the Victorian Period. Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been to the Galleries of Justice Museum exhibition in Nottingham. The children had a dramatic interpretation of Victorian Street life by becoming one of the characters of the time. They then went on to explore the City of Caves in Nottingham which is underneath the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre especially ‘Drury Hill’ which relates to the Victorian Period. We also had a very successful Open Day where parents of children of school age,

especially Reception children were invited to have a look around our school and be involved with ’messy play’ in our Reception class. It is an event that will now feature in our school calendar every year. The highlight of the term was our ‘Take Over Day’ when children were invited to become any adult role within school such as; Headteacher, Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Secretary, Midday Supervisors and Caretaker. The children had to apply for a role and be interviewed. On the day, the children were appropriately dressed and approached the tasks in a professional manner. The ‘Headteacher’ also had first-hand experience in task management through tackling his way through a busy and often unscheduled morning. A fabulous day! This term the whole school are looking at ‘Chocolate’ as their topic work and we are looking forward to our trip to Cadbury’s World very much!

Acorn pre-School, Whaplode

then join in with fun activities such as decorating biscuits and performing a special rap. The children also had a great lunchtime outing to the Indus restaurant to support their studies on India. The owners and staff were excellent in sharing their knowledge of the culture and origins surrounding Indian food. All of the children have been selecting after school clubs that they wish to take part in during the spring term. The school has greatly widened its variety of clubs and for the first time in spring will include lego, craft and recorder clubs alongside the more traditional sports, drama and music clubs.

During the past couple of months we have been busy creating firework work pictures and talking about fireworks. We celebrated Diwali where we made lanterns, musical shakers and rangoli patterns. We have been looking at post offices and postmen and women. We have been to post letters, parcels and to buy some stamps at the post office in Whaplode. The children dressed up all week 12th to 16th November for children in need. We all dressed up in spotty clothing, we all brought in our Pennies to fill Pudsey’s face. We had a range of different creative activities all week for Pudsey. We raised a total of 40.23 for children in need.

The children have been very busy creating gifts, cards and decorations for Christmas. The children sang a range of their favourite songs and Christmas song to the parents, careers and families at our Christmas concert. The children have been to St Marys Church Whaplode for their christingle service on the 7th December. Our Christmas party was the 18th December where we were entertained by Olli Wiz and we had a very special visit from Santa who gave us all a present. We hope that everyone had a very good Christmas!

St John the Baptist Church of England Primary School Class 4 have just had a trip to Burghley House, near Stamford which linked with their History topic for this term. They had an opportunity to look around the old kitchen to learn about servants’ jobs, food and cooking in Tudor times. They visited the dining room and sat

10

around a mock Tudor dining table and learnt more about table manners, food and Tudor society. A thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile trip. Class 5 had a trip to the Imperial war Museum, which again linked with their history topic for the term – they had an opportunity to

look around the museum and to take part in a role-play workshop looking at evacuation during wartime. The children dressed in wartime clothes for the day. Another fantastic trip. John Hayes, our local MP came into school during Parliament week to talk to children about

his life as a member of parliament. Our extra curricular activities this term included a Board Games Club, Tag Rugby, Football, Homework, Chess, Taiko Drums, Gymnastics, Drama, Change for Life, Yoga, Dance, Art & Choir.

Stay Safe This Winter Every year, somewhere in Britain, motorists are caught out by a sudden shift in the weather. We all remember the TV footage of cars and trucks stuck overnight in the snows of 2010. Then as ever, Land Rover vehicles played their part, with emergency services and aid organisations using them to get blankets, medical aid and help to stranded motorists. Winter Driving Tips Emergency response drivers have to be out in all weathers – but do you? The safest place to be is at home in the warmth. If you don’t need to drive in bad weather, don’t. If you do, then preparation is key. Plan your journey and allow extra time. Take with you a snow shovel, warning triangle, torch, de-icer, a Thermos of hot tea or coffee, bottled water and snacks. Also pack some extra clothing or

a blanket. Ideally don’t travel alone and let someone at your destination know you’re on your way, and don’t forget your incar mobile phone charger. It’s important to be sure that all oil, water, antifreeze and screen-wash levels are correct and that your tyres are correctly inflated, if you’re not confident to check these yourself, please call into a garage or your local dealership and they can check this for you. If you are a Land Rover owner, and you have the invaluable benefit of Terrain Response®, engage the ‘Grass Gravel Snow’ program as soon as wintry conditions appear. On ice and snow, you need to allow around ten times further for braking than on tarmac, so don’t follow someone else’s taillights too closely. Keep the momentum going up hills, and keep the speed low for descents.

Eva Petulengro - Caravans and Wedding Bands.

Michael Morpurgo – A Medal for Leroy

This is a memoir of Eva Petulengro, Romany clairvoyant who shared her life so beautifully in her first book The Girl in the Painted Caravan. This book told her life on the road with her parents much of which featured the Spalding area and brought back many memories for so many. This next episode of her story is no less readable and focusses her story in the 1960s, her marriage to a non-Romany and the birth of her children. This is a ‘charming sequel’ (Sunday Times), not a complicated read, something to tuck up in the cold winter days of January and lose yourself in a time past. If you haven’t read the Girl in the Painted Caravan that comes highly recommended too.

From the writer of the excellent War Horse this is another cracking read from Michael Morpurgo. The story is inspired by the life of Walter Tull, professional footballer, the only commissioned black officer in the British Army in World War 1. The story is that of Michael whose father died in the Second World War and this is about all he knows about him. With the help of Aunty Snowdrop he discovers the truth about himself and his family. Although a book aimed at younger teenagers, as with War Horse adults will enjoy this poignant story as well. It comes highly recommended and all the reviews on Amazon award the book five stars, basically a brilliant read.

Run Cleaner carries out the clean-up straight away and is perfectly safe to use. Click on Run Cleaner now. During the cleanup the tool will show the progress being made followed by a list of items addressed. When it has finished it will also show you the amount of disk space that has been recovered, almost 2Gb in the example shown. The initial clean up is now complete.

Running the Registry Analyser:

Click on the Registry icon on the left Click on Scan for Issues As before the application will now analyse your system and display progress. However there is an extra step to carry out due to the sensitivity of the Windows registry. Click on Fix selected issues You will next be asked if you want to backup the registry. Click on Yes

Now select where you want to save your registry settings. Your Documents folder is the default and this is fine so Click on Save Finally you will be prompted to show each fix individually or to Fix All. Click on Fix All CCleaner will now step through all the issues and address each one. When complete Click the Close button. You are now all done with these basic clean up actions and can close CCleaner. Well done! advice Top tips for using price comparison websites by John Willoughby Price comparison websites can help you to compare products and prices quickly, so that you can then buy goods and services from other retailers. Whether you want to switch energy provider, choose broadband, book a flight or get insurance, there is a bewildering array of price comparison sites out there to help you. So how do you get the best deal? The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) have teamed up with organisations including Citizens Advice to help you work out which sites to trust, what to look out for and how to deal with complaints. Check out what is on offer on more than one site and make sure the business is legitimate and that they include their address on the website. In some industries, accredited price comparisons sites are available. When you use a price comparison site you’ll be asked to enter personal details. For example, when looking for energy tariffs you might be asked how many people there are in your household, where you live and your current supplier. This information will be stored on the site’s database. It is important to make sure you know how your data will be used. If you don’t want your details passed to other companies, see if you can ‘opt out’ on the website. There is often a box you can tick to say you don’t give consent for your information to be shared. You can usually find this in a privacy policy and sometimes in the terms and conditions dealing with data and privacy. Checking information on price comparison sites When you use a price comparison site,

the price you get back in the results may not match what you’ve asked for in a search, or a trader may come up in the results that does not cover the area you live in. Make sure you check more than one site and check how the results are presented. This could be by relevance, price, popularity or because the company is sponsored by the price comparison site. You can then use the search that best suits you. Check the identity of the business and make sure the business address is on the site before you use it, so that you know that the site is legitimate and how to get in contact if there is a problem. If companies don’t provide a full geographical address they are committing a criminal offence. If you are searching for an energy product, phone, broadband or TV service or financial products, there are accredited websites you can use. Watch out in case sites claim that they represent all companies in the market or guarantee the best price when they don’t. Also watch out in case feedback from other consumers is false. If the terms and conditions on a price comparison site say that the company isn’t responsible for the search and comparison services they provide, this may be an unfair contract term. What to do if you are unhappy If you’re unhappy that a site has made false claims, or the search results don’t seem right, follow the site’s complaints procedure if they have one. If they don’t have one or if you’re still unhappy, you can go to the appropriate industry regulator,

such as OFGEM for energy. In some cases information can be passed to Trading Standards and the Advertising Standards Authority. The Citizens Advice consumer helpline can help you with this. More information on accredited websites can be found at: • Consumer Focus switching energy providers at: www.consumerfocus.org.uk • OFCOM phone broadband and digital TV price comparison at: www.consumers. ofcom.org.uk • Money Advice Service comparison tables for financial services at:www. moneyadviceservice.org.uk • Money Advice Service information on insurance at: www.moneyadviceservice. org.uk Our Top tips are therefore: 1. Protect your data. Always read the information these sites provide (usually in a privacy policy but sometimes in the part of the terms and conditions dealing with data and privacy). If you do not want your personal information to be passed to other companies, check to see if there is the ability to ‘opt out’ on the website, for example by ticking a box to say that you do not give your consent for your information to be shared. 2. Make the comparison which is most helpful to you. Check if your results are presented by relevance, price, or popularity and what the website says about how often it updates its information on prices and availability of goods.

3. Use a number of different sites. Expressions like 'We've found the best deal' or 'We've searched the market' don't guarantee you are seeing every available offer in the market, so always check out what is on offer on a number of different sites. 4. Know who you are doing business with. Check whether the site tells you the identity of the business (not just the name of the website) and their business address. By law they have to do so. 5. Do your homework. If you can, use an accredited site as part of your search as they have met certain standards for accreditation. Some websites comparing energy products are accredited by Consumer Focus, and some telecoms comparison websites are accredited by Ofcom. Some financial services are compared by the Government backed Money Advice Service. 6. Problem or complaint? Citizens Advice can help. Some sites may tell you that they are not liable if they make mistakes or mislead you; this may not in fact be the case. If you want to complain but aren’t sure how, Citizens Advice can help you to direct your complaint to the relevant person. Visit www. adviceguide.org.uk or call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 04 05 06.

Not Just Another ‘Your Children Should Eat More Fruit And Veg’ Campaign

A

new approach is being taken through the Eat Smart Healthy Start programmes available free to parents in South Holland, starting in the New Year. Healthy eating campaigns and support for parents throughout the district have been instrumental in improving healthy lifestyles, yet the obesity levels in South Holland are still significantly above the national average. The project recognises that it can be a difficult task for parents balancing the need to give children a healthy diet with other pressures of life such as time, money, child behaviour and food marketing. Eat Smart Healthy Start is run by national children’s charity Children’s Links having been piloted last year and has been re-commissioned by South Holland District Council as part of its Kitchen Garden Project funded by NHS Lincolnshire. It will feature an eight-week programme with sessions providing practical ideas on subjects such as budgeting, using children’s favourite meals to introduce healthier ingredients, involving children with food preparation and ideas for lunch boxes and treat food. It is run within school hours with crèche facilities for young children to enable parents to attend. Alice James, Sector Support Coordinator at Children’s Links, said: “From our experience of working with parents we know that they are aware of the benefits of

healthy eating put forward by campaigns such as the ‘five a day’ campaign but can feel pressurised and guilty about not being able to implement changes to their eating habits because of significant issues such as the time and costs of buying and preparing healthier food and often children’s resistance to eating them. “The Eat Smart Healthy Start programme is designed to help parents introduce these changes in practical, manageable ways that they can adapt to their own circumstances and budgets.” South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Big Society, Councillor Nick Worth, said: “The pilot scheme run last year gave excellent feedback from parents. By attending the programme over a number of weeks, parents were able to try out different ideas for making meal times more fun. “It also gave them the support and confidence to keep trying to make changes to their family routines once the course has finished. We hope that residents will want to take part in this fun and free initiative.” The Eat Smart Healthy Start programmes are running at the Reading Rooms in Holbeach on Wednesday mornings starting 09.30am, 9th January and at The Market House, Long Sutton at 09.30am, Thursday mornings from 10th January. For bookings and further information contact Kathryn Laverack at Children’s Links on 0845 3737 0645 or visit www.childrenslinks.org.uk.

The nursery will be extending their first class child care services and completely taking over an existing nursery in the neighbouring village of Pinchbeck. As the Manager of Little Treasures Nurseries, Rebecca Genever is very excited to have been given the opportunity to provide the same quality service and facilities at the new nursery in Pinchbeck. Since Little Treasures Nurseries was established in January 2010 the nursery has been going from strength to strength, a separate pre-school was opened in 2011 next to the existing nursery and we are delighted to be able to expand and offer more families in Spalding, Pinchbeck and the surrounding areas the same high standards of childcare. Little Treasures Nurseries, Pinchbeck will be opening on the 2nd January 2012, taking over the existing ABC nursery building. The Little Treasures Nurseries team has used the already successful ethos of the Spalding nursery to redesign and create a new fresh environment, mirroring the outstanding quality service we already offer. Rebecca commneted, "We know what works well and our enthusiastic and passionate team have a wealth of experience and knowledge on how best to support children’s learning and development and to provide a caring and stimulating environment for your child. Our main objective is to offer a relaxed, secure and loving environment where children can learn and play happily and where parents/carers can be confident and reassured that the care provided for all the children is of the highest standard."

Little Treasures Nurseries, Pinchbeck and Little Treasures Nurseries, Spalding will offer parents/carers the same affordable childcare that is flexible for children aged 6 weeks to 8 years, Monday to Friday, 51 weeks of the year. Both nurseries also provide flexible pre-school funded places, offering 15 hours of Free Early Years Childcare, each week (term time only) for all eligible 3 and 4 year olds. Make it New Year, New You in 2013 by Kate Chapman

What better time to take stock of your life than the start of a brand new year? So, as we get ready to say goodbye to 2012, why not take the opportunity to get cracking on all those things you’ve been putting off? Whether it be changing your job, updating your home, losing some weight and getting fit, or maybe just trying a new beauty treatment – really, what are you waiting for?

Home

The beginning of a new year is regarded by many as a clean slate - and what better way to wipe it clean than by de-cluttering your home? Perhaps your loft needs a clearout or maybe the spare room needs de-junking so it can finally become functional again, rather than a glorified storage space. Getting rid of the old stuff you no longer need or use can be very cathartic; you could recycle it, give it to charity, or if you’ve got enough, hold a yard sale and make a bit of spare cash for yourself in the process. Or maybe there’s a DIY project you’ve been putting off - it could be anything from installing some new shelves to building an extension; why not make January 1 the time to stop procrastinating and take action. Alternatively, you might be thinking that your home is in need of a makeover. There are lots of ways you can update things without spending a fortune. One of the easiest is by redecorating - changing the colour of your walls and furnishings like curtains, carpets and cushions can dramatically change the look of your place with very little effort or cost involved. If you’re thinking of selling your home, you’ll probably need to do some, or all of the above. Whether you want more space, are considering downsizing or need to move because of your job, Spring is regarded as one of the most buoyant times in the housing market, and therefore the time you’re most likely to achieve your desired asking price. Why not make the most of the run up to this season by tidying up, making small repairs and checking things like your guttering and roof for leaks now; that way potential buyers will get the best impression possible.

Career

When it comes to drawing up their top priorities in 2013, many people will be focussing on their job. There are several things to think about, particularly if you’re feeling stuck in a rut, or that your career is lacking direction. Take time to consider what you really want from your job - and where you would like to see yourself in 12 months time. If you like your profession, you could think about some workrelated courses, or get extra qualifications to help you progress and gain that promotion you’ve been after. Alternatively, if there’s something else you’ve always wanted to do instead, why not take steps to make your dream job a reality. Do some research about the companies you would ideally like to work for, and perhaps try and gain some work experience to help you get your foot in the door. Given the current economic climate many companies are not taking on as many new members of staff, but don’t be disheartened. Give yourself the best chance by updating your CV (there are loads of online sites offering tips on what and what not to include), search for jobs online or at your local JobCentre and brush up on your interview techniques. You could also seek advice from a professional or qualified career coach, who could help set you on your way to a more fulfilling work life. If you’ve always wanted to be your own boss, why not take the first step towards this goal in 2013 - afterall the only thing standing in your way is you.

Health

We’re lucky in South Holland as there are plenty of ways and things we can do to become more physically active, which in turn is one of the best ways to maintain and improve our health -whatever your age or ability. South Holland District Council is spearheading a campaign to motivate people and runs a variety of activities including Health Walks, Fit Kids for youngsters aged 8 to 11 years old and Vitality - exercise to music for the over 60s. It also provides support services in the form of health trainers and an exercise referral scheme. For more information on these programs and more, contact the council on 01775 761161 or check out its website at www.sholland.gov.uk Alternatively you could take up a special New Year offer at a local gym - there are plenty of discounts and reduced memberships to take advantage of at this time of year. But if the strict regime of a gym is not for you, why not try a new sport? Always fancied yoga, rugby or horse riding, but just never got round to it, then why not give it a go in 2013? There are lots of fun activities out there - and if ‘sport’ isn’t your thing why not try dancing instead? The key is to find something you enjoy, afterall, you’re more likely to keep it up, if you’re having fun as well as losing weight. Look at your diet too; if you’ve got a sweet tooth, maybe it’s time to cut down on the sugary treats. You don’t have to deny yourself altogether - reduce your portion size or save the cakes, biscuits and chocolate for special occasions. You could switch to low fat foods and ditch salt and ready meals for healthy, home-cooked options instead. If you need some moral support, why not join one of the many local slimming groups, which all meet at various times of the day. You should easily be able to find a one that fits in with your lifestyle.

Beauty

Why not kick-start your beauty regime with a few simple steps that’ll pay dividends when the good weather returns? Ladies, break those bad habits and remember to remove your make up before you go to sleep - you’re skin will thank you for it in the long run. Take the opportunity to clear out your make-up bag too, since like food, most of our beauty products have an expiry date. Chances are if something smells, has dried up or generally looks off then some kind of bacteria has moved in and multiplied. Most products should be alright for around a year, although experts advise you replace your mascara and liquid eyeliner after three months of them being opened. And remember beauty comes from within - so look after yourself by keeping hydrated. As well as drinking plenty of water, eat lots of water-rich fruit and vegetables. By doing this you can tick off eating your five a day too - research has shown that hair, skin and nails all benefit from a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients. Look after the parts of your body likes hands and feet that often get neglected - moisturise and exfoliate them to keep them in tip-top condition. Exfoliate your skin too as this will improve your complexion by removing the dead cells that cause dullness; it will also encourage new ones to grow too. There are plenty of products on the market to suit all budgets that you can use on both your body and face. Finally, why not clear out your wardrobe – we all have stuff lurking at the back that we’ve not worn for years, can no longer fit into, or bought but never wore. You could donate your unwanted items to charity, take them to stores such as Marks and Spencer which run swap schemes or get swishing and trade them with friends who also have stuff they want to get rid of – and this way you’ll end up with something new that you do want to wear!

While we may decide to cut out sweets, stomp on the chocolate, exercise more and spend more time with family, our pets also need a little of our resolve to help them break some of their bad habits... Although it’s easy to believe that your dog has chewed up your shoes because you left them alone for the day, our pets don’t have the instinct to ‘get one over’. If your pet is displaying unwanted behaviours, they need your help to steer them in the right direction. HErE arE a fEw SimplE TipS TO gET yOu STarTEd: dOgS CHEwing, CaTS SCraTCHing If you’ve come home to the destruction of another demolition party, you know things need to change. But where do you start? Firstly, consider your routine. Try to minimise the time your dog is left alone and consider confining them to one room if they are consistently running amok while you are gone. Try to keep your favourite shoes and other tantalisingly chewy items out of reach and provide them with plenty of alternatives. Keep a few good quality toys and rotate them so your dog remains stimulated by the toys after a few days of not seeing them. At Rooke’s, we also have a range of sprays available which can be applied to furniture to discourage your pet from chewing or clawing. Cats should have access to a designated ‘scratching post’ where they can scratch to their heart’s content. But, if you continue to experience problems with chewing, a visit to your vet is important to ensure there are no physical issues that are causing the behaviour. wOOf…wOOf….wOOf………….wOOf! barking, THE TErrOr Of THE nEigHbOurHOOd. An excessively barking dog is not only a pain to your ear drums, but for your neighbours’ too. Dogs bark for a number of reasons; they may be protecting their home from a perceived danger, they may be anxious or they may want to show their excitement. Boredom can cause dogs to bark excessively as they try to release pent up energy. You can combat the problem by taking them for long walks and increasing playtimes; keeping them active is a natural endorphin which makes them more relaxed once back at home.

28

You can try some basic training and redirect their attention if they bark unnecessarily by clapping or using a whistle, whilst using some basic commands. Alternatively, you could also use The Pet Corrector. It emits a hiss of air which mimics the sound of insects, snakes or geese (a sound domestic pets have a sensitivity to). This interrupts undesirable behaviours in dogs such as jumping up or stealing and is a great training aid. It even comes with a training guide to ensure you get the best results from it. Separation anxiety (barking, whining or destructive behaviour) can be a bit trickier to fix as you are not there to stop the behaviour while it is occurring. In this instance, try leaving the dog alone for very short periods of time and then gradually extending the time period that you are away. It is also very important to ensure that you do not make a big fuss of your dog as you are leaving or when you return. You want them to understand that your leaving is no big deal. digging dOgS – yOur unwanTEd landSCapEr It’s a painful thing to watch your much loved garden transformed into an earthy mess. A good method of prevention is to tire them out. Dogs that have plenty of stimulation are less likely to indulge in some amateur archeologically. We have a fantastic range of good, interactive toys that can be filled with treats that work their minds and their tastebuds! Just make sure they are not digging because they are looking for a warm spot, or seeking cool from the sun; if they are, get a kennel to keep them comfortable. As with humans, most bad pet behaviours exist for a reason. And what better time to address them than a fresh, new year! So here’s wishing you and your furry ones, a very happy and well behaved 2013!

Remembering the boys of Spalding’s Willesby School by Kate Chapman

Spalding's Winsover Road is one of the most diverse areas of the town, playing host to a wide variety of shops and businesses. But did you know the street was once home to a school? The Petit, or Willesby School as it was also known, was founded by Thomas Willesby (1618 - 1682). As recalled in Michael Elsden’s Aspects of Spalding series, Willesby’s will devised 50 acres and three roods of lands in Tydd St Mary, Moulton and Spalding, to seven trustees to build a boys’ school. The original building stood on the site of what is now Broad Street car park, along with the schoolmaster’s house, opposite the Spalding Club and by 1836 had 68 boys on its role, but nine years later it was re-located, in its entirety to Winsover Road, on the other side of town. A meeting house, that had been built for the use of ‘Particular Baptists of Strict Communion Order’ was bought by the school’s trustees for the sum of £320, and the board had the bodies from previous burials made within its walls removed to the town’s churchyard. In 1872 the master continued to live at number 14 Broad Street, and for a yearly salary of £80 taught 60 boys, who had their stationary provided by the trustees, along with an item of clothing such as a cap. Twenty years later the headmaster Henry John White was in reciept of a salary of £110 a year, and with an assistant master, oversaw the school for 140 boys as a Government Elementary School. By 1896 there was accommodation for 156 boys, with an average attendance of 148. One former boy, who attended The Willesby School in around 1880, told how he remembered Spalding Prison being located next door - and how he recalled seeing prisoners repairing the school yard. Arthur Mulley took over as headmaster in 1914, on a salary of £120 and in 1937, his wife Clara Mulley became the first female elected as a member of the former

30

Spalding Urban District Council. In 1926 J H Worley was appointed assistant master, and then later headmaster. He was the last to hold the position as the school was close to close its doors for the final time in 1960. It was then demolished and replaced by the former British Telecom building. One of the school’s most notable old boys is William Stapleton Royce (1858 -1924), a Labour Party politician, who served as MP for the Holland-with-Boston constituency - which included Spalding from 1918 until 1924. Born in Spalding, Royce was apprenticed as a joiner on leaving school, but served only two years before running away to London, where he worked on the construction of the General Post Office. A few months later he learnt the Government of Cape Town was offering free passage to South Africa for men to build railways there, and accepted a three-year contract, at the end of which he’d saved enough money to set up his own business. During the next 30 years Royce was heavily involved in the construction of various railway lines in South Africa as well as a number of important public buildings. He returned to England in 1910, and fought the January and December elections as the Conservative Party candidate for Spalding, but lost out to his Liberal opponent. Eight years later he successfully contested the Holland-with-Boston division on behalf of the Labour Party and held the seat at both the 1992 and 1923 elections In June 1924 Royce was offered the Governorship of Tasmania and accepted the role, although before he could take it up, he died of a heart attack on a London bus.

ille rt on

If there's one thing that New Year does, it's make us all sit back and evaluate our lives. The media is full of doom and gloom about the financial state of the country but what about you at home? How do you manage your finances? If you think you could do with some help to get your finances in shape for 2013 then read on.... Create a budget.

Ask yourself, “Am I paying for something I no longer use?”

Sit down and work out what you and your family spend on a regular basis then compare that to the money coming in to the home. Try to get as close to the real numbers as possible instead of an estimate for a more accurate budget, however for some, estimates work well for them.

This can be anything from a gym membership to a tv rental program like Sky. You will be surprised if you look hard enough what you might find you are still paying for something that you do not use or take advantage of anymore.

Shop around, compare, and switch companies if needed. Plan ahead. There’s no surprise when holidays, birthdays and other events crop up so plan how you will afford them now. For holidays such as Christmas or Easter, write down exactly who you need to buy for and figure out how much you would like to spend in total. This works well for birthdays as well. For weddings, events, and occasions start putting a little money aside each week the second you receive an invite for anything.

Rainy day money vs. emergency money. Rainy day money is money that you can be used towards something fun whether planned unexpectedly or not. Emergency money set aside because you never know when you might need in a pinch unexpectedly – like the boiler needing to be replaced! Rainy day money: It is a great idea, especially for family’s that receive their pay weekly, to put some money aside per pay (if you can) to give themselves a little cushion for the future. This money could even go towards a planned family day out, dinner, bowling, or whatever else the family likes to do together. Emergency money: This is NOT your rainy day money. This is your ‘just in case the car breaks down, refrigerator stopped working, random dentist emergency’ money. This money should only be used in case of an emergency and nothing else.

Start an automatic savings plan. Designate a certain amount in from every salary to be automatically pulled and put into a savings account. If you can, why not put some money into a Childrens Savings Account, it’s a great way to get your children involved in their own finances and learn the value of a pound at a young age.

Call your utility providers and see if there is any way to take some money off your current statement or lower the price of what you are paying. There are many comparison websites out there for you to use and whilst it can seem a hassle you can save 100s of pounds a year.

Enter a debt repayment program if you are in debt. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to get out and stay out of debt, especially if it is weighing heavily on you. Shop around for a debt re-payment program in your area that can help you pay off you debt once and for all and live a debt free life. Little by little each month makes a difference.

Vouchers, vouchers, vouchers! Vouchers are you friend! By using a voucher or taking advantage of a promotional deal, that does not make you cheap, in fact it makes you a smart consumer. Why pay full price for something if you don’t have to? Just make sure you don’t buy something you don’t need as you can end up spending money you haven’t planned for!

Invest in a small side job that you love. Maybe there is something you would like to do from the comfort of your own home to make a little side spending money. This could be selling old items on eBay or even creating and selling a home made product through a page on facebook. Either way, if you have the time, make turn this into something fun. This should not be over whelming or stressful, because in that case, it’s just not worth it.

Look into a retirement plan.

Cut back on non-essential items you may not need at the moment.

If you do not already have one, you should definitely look into some sort of plan for retirement to help you save for the future.

I am always the first one to say it is okay to treat yourself from time to time, but why always spend money on things you can either do or make at home.

If you have money saving tips, please email them to editor@simply-spalding.co.uk as we will be sharing them next month with our readers.

ew year, new you.... isn't that how the old saying goes?

Now, I must admit I'm not usually one for making New Year's resolutions - purely because I always manage to break them within a matter of days - but I think I'm going to stick my neck out in 2013, and by declaring this one publicly, I'm hoping it might just be the incentive I need to stick to it this time. So what vice am I vowing to ditch, I hear you ask? Well, allow me to explain. Several people who've seen me since I’ve had baby Peter have commented on how quickly I've regained my pre-pregnancy figure; and that dear reader is down to two things – running around after two little ones certainly helps burn off the calories, although I’m pretty certain that breastfeeding has been the main factor in helping me squeeze back into my BB (Before Baby) jeans. But now my little chap is almost nine months old (I know, where has the time

gone?!), and I stopped feeding him myself a couple of months back, I've started to notice the pounds creeping back on. So the time has finally come to admit that I can no longer keep eating what I like, when I like, without dire repercussions around my waistline. Thankfully the excesses of Christmas have finally passed us by for another year - the last turkey sandwich has been demolished, the final Quality Street plucked from the tin and the remaining piece of fruit cake lapped up. Now it's back to normal; I have no more excuses left there really is nothing left for it, but to bite the bullet and take some action. I won't be pulling on my trainers for a jog around the block just yet, instead it's no more biscuits cakes and sweets for me. I know my limits though, and am embarking on a full-blown diet, more an exercise in self-control, although goodness knows how long I'll be able to last. Nevertheless I'll give it my best shot; so on that note, wish me luck, while I wish you all a Happy New Year!

focus on Pied Calf Yard & The Sheep Market

A new chapter unfurling in historic building’s story by Kate Chapman

Regarded as one of the oldest buildings in Spalding the former Priors Oven bakery, is about to start a new phase in its colourful history.

T

he attractive Grade II* listed building, which stands proudly on the corner of Sheep Market and Hall Place has been put up for sale, along with its three-storey bake house, with a guide price of £160,000. Most probably built in around 1230AD, its first use is believed to have been as the lock up for the monks who inhabited the town’s Benedictine Priory, which stood on the site now occupied by South Holland District Council’s offices in Priory Road. Inside, it boasts an octagonal room with a vaulted wooden ceiling - eight concentric arches with wood beams – dated as medieval by historic building specialists. This formed the ground floor of the north-west angled turret of the Abbey Precincts and was used as a prison, with gallows located above. The property was later to become a prison, prior to the one built next door to the Sessions House in 1826 and went on to be used as a blacksmith’s shop in the 1840s. The brick and stone building, described as 19th Century in appearance, was heavily restored in around 2005, following the closure of The Priors Oven café and bakery – (said to have taken its name from the building’s shape, rather than its previous use) – which made its home there for more than 25 years. Following its departure the building became a shop, and most recently was used by designer jewellery store Number One. Thanks to its fascinating past, the site has been the focus of many exciting rumours – including hauntings by the ghost of a murdered monk, that it was actually an oven and that there was a once secret passageway linking it with an ancient monk’s house in Monks House Lane. Sadly, most were dispelled by experts during the restorations carried out a few years ago. Spalding Priory, which began as a small Benedictine House, is believed to have been founded in around 1052, just before the start of the Norman Conquest, by a cell of Croyland (Crowland) Abbey, for Leofric, Earl of Mercia and his wife Godiva,

36

Countess of Leicester. Soon after the conquests were over, in around 1066, Spalding Manor was chosen as the residence for William the Conqueror’s nephew Yvo Tailebois. At the same time, the town’s Priory was taken over by the Benedictine Monks of Anjou, who remained there until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century. In 1070 the Priory was renewed by the monks to the dependency of St Nicholas’ Abbey, Angers, and grew to be one of the richest religious houses in the whole of Lincolnshire. By 1200 its lands covered an area of around 30 acres, situated with the triangle formed by the Welland, Westlode Drain and Market. The monks residing there secured their independence from Angers in 1397 and remained so until 1540, when the house was surrendered at the dissolution. Spalding, as a town began to fall in general decline at this point in history, with the number of households going

down too; the community had grown dependent on the Priory and took a long time to recover from the setback of losing it. Apart from the chapel at Wyekham, the Vetchery at Low Fulney and the Priors Oven building, there are no other visible remains of this historic building, although some quoins (corner masonry blocks) set into one of the walls along the Hole in the Wall passage are also believed to be associated with the Priory. And six human skeletons found during building work in Bridge Street are presumed to indicate the site of the Priory’s burial ground. 1960s shot of the Priors Oven. Next door, just around the corner into Hall Place was the Home and Colonial general store (once one of Britain's largest retail chains).

10 ways to fit in a workout before 10 am Don't beat yourself up for never hitting the gym - these moves will have you feeling tight and toned all before you sit down to work! 7.00 a.m.

When you wake up, immediately hit the floor and do 10 push-ups. As you get stronger, add an extra two push-ups each week. As you increase the amount of reps, you'll spot a real difference in your upper arms. Looking good!

7:10 a.m.

For a high-protein breakfast, microwave eggs for two minutes. Fit in cardio by doing 20 jumping jacks, 20 squats, 20 front lunges, and 20 tricep dips on your kitchen chair whilst the eggs are cooking.

7:30 a.m.

While you're brushing your teeth, alternate between calf raises and squeezing your butt muscles for toning every other day.

7:45 a.m.

Squeeze in 50 crunches before you get dressed. It's great to do abdominal exercises before you put on your clothes, as psychologically you will feel skinnier.

8:00 a.m.

Whether you're dropping the kids off at school or heading to work, skip the lift. Make sure you're wearing flats or comfortable shoes, and run up the stairs to burn some calories and help strengthen your glutes.

8:05 a.m.

When you reach the final flight, work the outside of your thighs by side-stepping halfway to the landing, leading with your left leg.

8:10 a.m.

Work your other side by side-stepping up the stairs until you reach your floor, this time leading with your right leg.

9:00 a.m.

Use your desk or your coffee table to do 15 inclined push-ups. Different angles work different muscle groups, doing push-ups flat on the ground when you first wake up and then doing them inclined later helps work different parts of your chest, upper back, and core for a more complete workout.

9:30 a.m.

Rather than sitting still when you're on the phone, keep moving. Take hold of a chair, extend one of your legs to the side, and pulse it out for 20 seconds while focusing on squeezing your thighs. Repeat with the opposite leg. This move is great for core for stabilisation as well as toning the outer thighs, which minimises saddlebags.

9:45 a.m.

You've earned a coffee break! Drop down for 10 squats, and head out for a latte!

Always check with a healthcare professional before embarking on new exercise regime. www.simply-spalding.co.uk  SIMPLY SPALDING  39 38

Is Your Resolution Among the Most Popular? by Kate Chapman

‘Out with the old and in with the new’, is a phrase we hear a lot of this time of year, especially as we prepare to bid farewell to the year gone and welcome in the next. And because of this ‘new slate’ we’re presented with on January 1, it has traditionally become the day when we make our New Year’s resolutions. So what are you pledging to change in 2013? home project Don’t throw money down the drain – get your bathroom renovations right first time by Kate Chapman

The bathroom is one of the most practical rooms in your home, but that doesn't mean it can't look good too. It can also prove to be one of the trickiest in the house to remodel. So, as with any renovation project you should set a budget before you begin, that way you will know what your boundaries are and, hopefully, won't overspend. If you have a set figure in mind, you can choose a new suite to match your finances - afterall a good sized bath and some decent storage space ought to rank higher on your wish list than luxuries like underfloor heating or a deluxe power shower. These extras can be included afterwards, if your budget allows. And remember switching the toilet and sink around may look like a fantastic idea on paper, but be realistic - moving the plumbing around will only add to your costs. Seek the advice of a professional - depending on your own DIY skills, there may be some tasks you can undertake yourself, while others are best left to a plumber, plasterer or builder. Plus, you'll save yourself some money in the long run, if you get a qualified tradesman to do the job properly in the first place, rather than have to make an emergency call to get them to sort it all out afterwards. Speak to your friends, family and colleagues too to find a suitable contractor, or check out our handy numbers section to find the right professional. Something else to bear in mind is that there are numerous shower systems available today - make sure you do plenty of research to see which is the most cost effective and compatible with the plumbing already installed in your home. You could also visit local showrooms to see what's available and check out home and interior magazines to pick up more renovation ideas. With interior design trends constantly

changing, it's not always possible - or financially viable - to keep updating your bathroom suite. However, by making a few small changes you can dramatically improve the look of your room without spending a fortune in the process. Why not consider a few of the following to rejuvenate your home: * Refinish your existing bath, shower tray, sink and toilet - this will cost a fraction of the price of replacing them as well as spruce things up. * Get rid of your curtains or blinds. Wooden window shutters are a popular alternative at the moment, as are net drapes, which would also add plenty of light. * Change your flooring - a new carpet or tiles could dramatically change the aesthetics and altering the colour could make a huge difference. Bright, light colours will help to open up a bathroom, which is traditionally one of the smallest rooms in the home, and create the illusion of more space. * A towel rail can instantly update your bathroom too - as well as making it look tidier and free up space, its contemporary design will add a touch of style. * Re-paint your walls - you could change the colour or add new tiles. Take time to decide on the latter, as these are more difficult to change once they've been put up. And it's worth bearing in mind that although larger tiles are more fashionable at the moment, they are much more difficult to fit. * Other new accessories - towels, mirrors, cabinet, toothbrush and toilet roll holders and light fittings - can also instantly transform your room, all at very little cost. So there you have it - little changes to a small room can make a big difference.

A MINI car with a BIG personality

W

hat could be more fun than driving a MINI? The iconic little car always brings a smile to the face when it zooms along the road, boasting great handling, a fair bit of grunt, and unrivaled scope for customisation. Thanks to Sycamore MINI in Peterborough it’s never been easier to get the car you want, whether its a cracking little head-turner in the MINI Coupe, a more practical drive like the Clubman, or a package of brute power in the MINI John Cooper Works. The showroom on Papyrus Road, which opened in January 2012, launched the new MINI Clubvan in November and the new MINI Paceman – a sleek combination of power and design will be available from March 2013. The team of friendly staff will advise you on what would be the best car for you and the best finance packages available. They know the needs of MINI drivers are highly specialised and individual, and that’s why they have the expertise and knowledge to help in every possible way. The MINI qualified Aftersales Team are fully equipped to cater for all your servicing needs and

thanks to the fleet of MINI loan cars, you need never be left without transport. Sycamore MINI Brand Manager Daniel Lynas said: “MINIs are great fun, very dynamic, and also very powerful. “There is something for everyone, whether it’s a two door sports car or a five door, five seater family car.” “We can also modify and add accessories to your car, inside and out, to really make it your own.” Through the Cherish MINI programme for used cars, you can get on the road in a lovingly cared for MINI from just £5995. Or perhaps you fancy a new MINI One? It can be yours for just £179 a month, with a MINI sized deposit. MINI was a winner in the 2011 Motability Awards, and the Werrington showroom has three dedicated Motability staff who can explain how the scheme works. The scheme enables disabled people to exchange either their Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance or their War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement to obtain a new car. Insurance and road tax is included and many of the car adaptations

do not cost any extra. Daniel added: “ A lot of people also don’t realise that under the Motability scheme we have cars such as the MINI One Hatch which require no advance payment.” Across the road is the MINI Aftersales Centre with a dedicated MINI Service Adviser. The centre offers MOT, servicing, air conditioning servicing, repairs (including body work), tyres, and accident recovery. Sycamore MINI is conveniently located for Peterborough and all surrounding areas. Feel free to give them a call on 01733 707074. Alternatively go to the Sycamore website, which can be found at www.sycamoremini. co.uk. You can see all the new and used models for sale, look at the modifications and personalisations, and maybe even register your interest in the new Paceman. You could also pop into the showroom to get a look for yourself and take a MINI for a test drive. So why not drop in - and see where your MINI adventure can take you.

There is something for everyone, whether it's a two door sports car or a five door, five seater family car. www.simply-spalding.co.uk  SIMPLY SPALDING  47 46

Peugeot 208 Feline 1.6 THP 3dr

Apart from track days where do you get as much fun? That’s kind of what my brain kept repeating each time I got behind the wheel of this fun supermini.

E

verything about the new Peugeot 208 is so exciting - right from the tiny, sporty steering wheel to the grip the car has around corners. I really feel Peugeot is back on track with its contribution to the hothatch market. Way back in the 205 GTI days the French car maker had that particular market sewn up – and the 205 was, and still is, an icon in the motoring world. The 208 will become a legend too; no doubt about it. It has the looks, feel and performance of a true supermini as well as all the safety gadgetry you need for modern day motoring. My test car looked superb cloaked in a Spirit Grey paintjob combined with a black and grey leather effect interior trim. Its 17 inch

48

alloys looked fat against its diminutive but muscular body and its rear spoiler and double chrome tailpipes looked ‘the dog’s’. On starting the engine, the 1598 cc engine sounds promising, and once you engage first gear and take off, you know this car is not your usual little motor. For a start, the gearshifts feel precise and sporty and the car is eager – it’s like a dog straining at its leash until it can find an open stretch. Then, when you do find a suitable uncluttered bit of road, you can set the 208 free. That’s when it sits back on its haunches for a moment before launching into a blistering attack on the asphalt. The 156 bhp is certainly apparent and the 0-62 mph comes in 8.1 seconds, climbing where legal, (German autobahns calling?) to 134 mph. Available in both three and five door body style variants, the 208 is certainly the embodiment of an exciting new direction for Peugeot. No surprise then that there has been an incredible and positive response to the new 208, illustrated by over 7,500 orders so far. It really has been a tremendous start for the car, as it was also named ‘Best Supermini’ at the Auto Express Awards during the first week of launch. The 208 also obtained five stars from Euro NCAP, certifying its safety credentials, and was the first car in its segment to achieve this following the introduction of more demanding review criteria. So, if you still want hatchback practicality but you are also after a uniquely intuitive and pleasurable driving experience, stop off at your local Peugeot dealer and take a test drive. You won’t be disappointed.
