Welcome to the December issue What a contrast this year is to last. I remember feeling pretty good that by this time I was organised with my presents and organisation for Christmas but this year I feel a little bit nervous at the prospect it is only a few weeks away. We seem to have a busy few weeks ahead and that’s not to mention the addition of my son starting school and all the festivities that go on there! In the office this month Rosie is celebrating a big birthday so we have enjoyed cake…A LOT! Happy Birthday to you! We also had a fabulous time at The Crystal Ball for our Christmas Party, what a great night was put on by the committee. Back to the December issue and this month we are looking at all things festive, Laura has some yummy Christmas recipes in food & drink, we help you navigate the works Christmas party without drama and many local businesses are taking the opportunity to wish you a Happy Christmas. Tim this month tests the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, if you’re looking for a new family car then this could be the one for you! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

Springfields Christmas Gifting Tree Returns The Gifting Tree is back at Springfields again this year between 18th November and 15th December. This hugely popular initiative is a great way to give back this Christmas. This year, Springfields is collecting toys and gifts not only for children, but also for vulnerable adults in the local area that might not otherwise receive a Christmas present. The tree can be found within M&S Outlet this year. Take a tag from the tree, which will have a name and an age on it. Gifts are then collected unwrapped with the tag attached to be taken by local groups, charities, schools and hospitals to reach their recipient. Simon Stone, Retail Director of Springfields Outlet said: “We’re proud to run this wonderful campaign to provide toys and

gifts to local causes and every year we are overwhelmed by our customers’ generosity. “This year, we would like to extend the campaign to give gifts to vulnerable adults and older people as well as children.” Last year, a record number of gifts was donated at Springfields. 4,702 gifts were given to local causes including Anna’s Hope – the leading children’s brain tumour charity in the East or England, Teenage Cancer Trust and Barnardo’s Services. This year, we will be collecting gifts and toys for: Holbeach Hospital, Capricorn Day Centre – Holbeach, Framework – Spalding, Lighthouse Project, Agape Foodbank, Garth & Priory School, Mencap – Spalding, St Pauls Ward – Spalding, Little Miracles – Peterborough, Alzheimers Society and Callum Pites Smile Charity.

LIVES launch 2020 Charity Calendar with Ringrose Law

We are delighted to announce the release of the 2020 LIVES Calendar. The Lincolnshire Village Life Calendar has been put together by LIVES and local Solicitors Ringrose Law over the last few months. The calendar features images entered by the public of shots of Lincolnshire Village Life and and today was officially launched at a presentation at the International Bomber Command Centre. In 2018 alone LIVES attended 15,000 medical emergencies across Lincolnshire. They estimate 1 in 5 people in Lincolnshire have been helped by one of their responders in the last 15 years. In 2020 LIVES will be celebrating their 50 year anniversary. Nikki Cooke, CEO of LIVES comments; “We’re so grateful to receive support from Ringrose Law for another fantastic LIVES calendar. Each year we need to raise over £1 million in

order to fund 700 Community First Responder across Lincolnshire. We hope this calendar can help raise much needed funds as we enter our 50th year.” Alex Bennett, Marketing Manager at Ringrose Law comments on the calendar; “The calendar looks absolutely fantastic, and the quality of the images is superb. We thank everyone involved in the project and now want to try and sell as many copies of the calendar as we can to raise money for LIVES.” The Calendar is now on sale across Lincolnshire at various outlets and at all Ringrose Law offices. The team will also be out and about at various Christmas markets over the next few weeks selling the calendar so please look out for it or alternatively go to www.lives.org.uk/2020-calendar to order a copy online.

Spalding landlord found guilty of running unlicensed HMO in town A South Holland landlord has been found guilty of failing to license a house in multiple occupation (HMO) on Vikings Way in Spalding, leading to a fine and other costs totalling over £1,200. Nicholas Moyses was called to Boston Magistrates Court on Monday 14 October after he ignored numerous attempts by South Holland District Council to ensure that he attained the necessary HMO licence for the house. Following a lack of response from Mr Moyses on whether or not the property was being used as an HMO, an inspection was carried out on 27 June by the Council’s private sector housing

team, who were able to confirm that the property still had multiple occupancy, with six bedrooms in total. Mr Moyses failed to attend court but the magistrates agreed to hear the case in his absence, and he was found guilty of failing to licence his home correctly. For this he received a fine of £750, together with a victim surcharge of £75 and costs of £380. This made a total amount payable of £1,205. Cllr Christine Lawton, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for housing and health said: “This prosecution highlights our continued commitment to ensuring that residents

across South Holland are kept safe from unlicensed and unsafe landlords. Results like this are only possible through the hard work of the Council’s entire housing team, who regularly monitor properties in the district and are able to take swift and decisive action when it is required. “Homes need to provide tenants with a healthy and safe environment to live in, and the licensing is a crucial part of us being able to monitor this and ensure that these necessary standards are met. The legislation exists for a reason and we will not hesitate to take action against anyone who does not comply with it.”

Spooktacular Fu Love Weston committee held their second ever event to raise fuds to bring the community together and to improve the village facilities. Over 200 people are estimated to have attended over the duration of the trail and family party that was held at the village hall. The villagers put on a brilliant display and decorated their houses and visitors were issued with a trail map around the village to follow to find clues at each of the houses that took part. The first 15 returned forms won a free pumpkin, kindly donated by Lincolnshire Field Produce. Resident Jo-Ann Tointon commented on the party, “We have recently moved to Weston Hills and it is great to see this new committee pulling together to put on such events for the village. My two little ones have had a great evening – we can’t wait for the next one” Despite the very wet weather everyone made a great effort with their costumes and the winners of the best dressed adult and child contest won a voucher for East of England Firework Fantasia Family Ticket and Annual family pass to Baytree Owl and Wildlife Centre respectively. The best dressed house, 9 Wimberley Close, won a voucher for The Woodlands Hotel. Congratulations to all the winners! Love Weston Chairman, Hayley Hammond was full of praise of the team “It was a challenging day with the torrential rain but it was great to see people out and about walking the trail. That’s the nature of the Great British weather unfortunately. We have a dedicated committee and a number of volunteers who helped on the night, I would like to say a huge thank you to them. It would not have been possible without them. As always we are looking for new members and volunteers to help, please4 keep an eye on our facebook page for more details.”

Love Weston have more events planned for Christmas and into 2020. 6 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Nick’s Notes Worth Cllr Nick

I

was privileged to be invited to attend this years Armistice Day Parade in Ypres laying a wreath at the Menin Gate on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council alongside a wreath for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue. My main reason for attending as the executive member for Fire & Rescue is because this year marked the first ever combined band to participate in Ypres and we were invited to lead the parade at the Menin Gate. This consisted of bands from Devon & Somerset, Cornwall, Tyne & Wear and the Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band. The Lincolnshire band was formed in 2009 through the integration of the Lincolnshire Concert Band with Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue. The band has a large selection of music to play from with over 600 pieces in their library that can suit most tastes. They have had the honour of joining other service bands at the annual Fire Fighters Memorial Service in London, but this clearly has been the greatest honour of all and I

8 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages.... could tell just how much it meant to the players and to Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue. To listen to the combined bands, the drums, the lone piper, the poignant music played while 55,000 poppies drop to the floor from the open circles in the ceiling of the Menin Gate, along with the National Anthems of Great Britain and Belgium is incredibly emotional and certainly an experience I will never forget. Lincolnshire of course played a major part in the 1st World war with both the Lincolnshire Regiment who won 69 battle honours between 1914 and 1918 and the Lincolnshire Yeomanry, a local cavalry regiment, hence our prominent role at the Ypres Armistice Day Parade. For me to be in a town that had been completely flattened in the 1st World War to see the magnificent reconstruction visible in all its glory today, is in itself quite inspirational and says a lot about the character of the local people. Many firefighters from around the country attend this

event every year and for me and those of us that were there for the first time, to hear their stories along with the camaraderie and friendship of the Fire Service in particular, is something that will always remain with me. An inspiration, an honour and a privilege. So if like me you have not been before, it is well worth the trip and the not to be missed “In Flanders Fields” Museum is in itself an experience not to be missed – just remember to take plenty of tissues! I was fortunate enough to share the trip with Terry Coffey, a wonderful colleague to have and from whom I learned so much, who is chairman of the Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band, an inspiration himself (still riding a Harley-Davidson at 80!).

Advice Reporting Fake or Counterfeit Goods If you’ve brought an item that is fake or counterfeit, you have the legal right to a refund. You can also report the seller to Trading Standards or report the seller for fraud. Trading Standards might take legal action against the seller, but they can’t help you to get your money back. The amount of time that you have to get a refund from the seller depends on if you purchased the item before or after October 2015. If you bought the item before the 1st October 2015, you have the legal right to a refund within a ‘reasonable’ time of you buying the item. The law isn’t very specific on how long you have, but if you’re confident in your approach you should be entitled to a refund within the first two months or so. However, If you paid for the item over 2 months ago, you’re legally entitled to a partial refund depending on how much you’ve used the item and how long you’ve had it. You’ll have to negotiate with the seller to agree on a fair price. The seller can also give you a genuine version of the item to replace the fake one. When contacting the seller, it is important to say that you have a right to a refund under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, because the item that you purchased doesn’t match its description. If you brought the item on, or after, the 1st October 2015 you’re legally entitled to a full refund on fake goods within 30 days of paying for them. If it’s been over 30 days but less than 6 months since you paid, the seller is legally able to give you a real version of the item to replace the fake one. However, if they can’t provide a replacement, they’re legally required to give you a refund (up until 6 months after you paid for it). If you paid for the item more than 6 months ago, you’re entitled to a part-refund depending on how much you’ve used the

s U o t k l Ta

item and how long you’ve had it. It’s harder to do this after 6 months as you could be asked to prove that the item is a fake - try talking to the real brand and asking them to inspect it. When seeking a refund, it is important to say that you have a right to a refund under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, because this item doesn’t match its written/verbal description. The seller of the items may argue that the items in question were obviously fake because they were very cheap. They can say you must have known it wasn’t the real thing and use that as a reason not to give your money back. However, they’re breaking the law by selling fake items and your legal rights still apply. If you paid for the item by debit card, you should contact your bank and ask for a refund under the chargeback scheme. If you paid by credit card and the item cost less than £100, you can also contact your credit card company and use the chargeback scheme. However, if you paid for an item by credit card that cost between £100 and £30,000, contact your credit card company and say you want to make a Section 75 claim to get your money back. If you paid by Paypal, use Paypal’s online resolution centre to report the dispute, however, you must do so within 180 days of paying for an item. Trading Standards investigates criminal activity and prosecute sellers and traders

Mini Police

At the heart of our Mini Police program, both literally and metaphorically, is the message ‘We’re Here To Help’. The whole ethos is that we want our Mini Police to be ambassadors for Lincolnshire Police and their schools, learning and sharing key messages with their communities, and doing tasks to make it a better place. In the weeks since our elections have been held, our schools have really embraced this idea. Some of our schools have taken on our ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ task where we show the positive effects that kindness can have, then challenge the Mini Police to do something amazing. The Mini Police from Cowbit St Mary’s Primary school did just that, taking part in the South Holland ‘Find and hide A Book Group’, hiding books around the village for residents to find. Pupils from Fleet Wood Lane School have been keeping their cyclists safe – they recently held a Bike Marking event, postcoding bikes belonging to fellow pupils and also selling bike lights to make riders more visible in the dark mornings and nights. Quadring Primary Mini Police created and hosted their own ‘Keep Safe at Halloween’ competition, creating their own certificates and awarding prizes to winners. We

think this is wonderful, as although Halloween does not feature on our Mini Police curriculum, they used their initiative to do something to help others around them. Spalding Primary School and William Stukely Primary school in Holbeach have been working on our Anti-Bullying topic, and supported the Anti –Bullying Alliance’s ‘Odd Socks Day’ for Anti-Bullying week. The Remembrance Sunday parades are becoming an annual part of the Mini Police program for some schools in South Holland. PCSO Naomi Newell organised for the Mini Police from schools across Spalding and then Holbeach and The Suttons to take part in the two parades. The turnout was amazing, with 29 Mini Police attending the Spalding Parade in the morning, and 22 in the afternoon at Holbeach. I was present at the Holbeach parade, and it was great to hear some really positive comments from both spectators and other participants about how smart, well behaved and committed the Mini Police were. Naomi and I would like to thank all of the Mini Police and their families for coming along and taking part.

Wisbech Grammar School Lucy Lim is currently a 6th Form pupil at WGS and is currently studying A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Geography and hopes to study Medicine at university 2020. Lucy is currently a 6th Form pupil at WGS and is currently studying A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Geography and hopes to study Medicine at university 2020. This is her 14th Year at WGS and Lucy from Kings Lynn has always played Hockey and loves going to the gym. WGS coaches spotted how talented Lucy was and kept encouraging her to take up Ruby, and since Lucy took their advice, she has not looked back. Her journey into Rugby started at the end of February 2019 and Lucy took to the game very quickly, enjoying the adrenalin when she scored a ‘try’. Lucy started training and committing to the game and while attending The Rosslyn Park National Schools Rugby 7s Tournament with WGS, she got scouted by England Coach, Amy Turner. Lucy was invited to trials for Saracens and has since been training in their centre of excellence’. Saracens Women are a Tyrrells Premier Rugby side who are back to back champions of the Tyrells Premiership (2018

and 2019). They are part of Saracens RFC who’s men’s side are reigning Premiership and European Rugby Champions. “I was very surprised and happy at being selected to play for Saracens as I had only just taken up the game. I train with the squad once a month and I hope to be selected to start playing matches in the near future”. Lucy Lim Head of Rugby Alex Laybourne said: “I am delighted for Lucy, she has always been an excellent athlete and has made the transition to the game with ease, taking on our advice and guidance along the way. The girls Rugby programme has continued to grow and go from strength to strength over the last seven years and it is fantastic to see this recognition of one of our pupils”.

Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School had a brilliant day working with Kid’s Country on their ‘Farm to Fork’ project during breakfast week in November. They learnt about the ingredients that go into making pancakes and sausages and had a go at making – and eating- their own. They were able to get up close to a huge tractor and sit in the cab and to learn about the yield of wheat and oil seed rape from 1 metre square of field. Some of the older children had the opportunity to speak on BBC Radio Lincolnshire too! As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Year 1 dressed up and spent a day at Nene Park as part of their ‘Pirates’ topic, making pirate ships and seeing if they floated on the lake (they did!) They also had a treasure hunt for gold (aka shiny sweets) and built Pirate Dens in the woods. Year 6 visited the Council Chamber at SHDC to learn about the voting process and the role Councillors play in local government. They had a chance to cast a vote in a real ballot box and to ask questions using the microphones used in Council meetings. The School has also enjoyed success in the Independent School Association (Eastern Region) Art Competition in Cambridge, with children placed in the Textile and Painting classes. Now onwards and upwards to Christmas… Nativity plays, parties, a Junior visit to the pantomime and a carol concert!

Boston College To launch the careers of the designers, logical thinkers and problem solvers of the future, outstanding learning environments are needed. A new one will open its doors this month. It’s called EMAT, it’s in Boston, and it’s going to change the game for learning and development in the region. EMAT stands for Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology. You might think that means a workshop full of greasy machinery, but that’s about as far from the picture of engineering and manufacturing today as Henry Ford is from Elon Musk. Industry and technology have moved on at an incredible pace in recent times and now offer far reaching opportunities to build a successful career in almost every field, from aerospace to agriculture and artificial organs to artificial intelligence. Marie Roffey worked as an engineer in the Royal Navy for 20 years before becoming a lecturer at Boston College and is an enthusiastic promoter of the changing face of the subject she loves, she said, “Think how different a new car is from one made even five years ago. The engine doesn’t need oil - it’s a box of chemicals excited by electricity. In place of a controlled explosion

14 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

several thousand times a minute, you’ve got a source of power that is silent, instant and clean.” Engineering the Future The range of engineering careers is so much wider now than in the past as industry responds to the growth of digital technology. Today, the machines engineers design and work on are likely to be computers, robotic arms, or automated devices that think for themselves. Automation and machine learning are at the centre of what is being called the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0. It is changing design, construction, manufacturing and the skills we need to succeed in a global market. In the industrial office of today, instead of sitting at a drawing board, you’re creating designs in CAD on a screen, sending them to an automated milling machine, or a digital 3-D printer, which was itself made on a robot production line. The new specialist EMAT building will provide an industry-driven training facility that will stimulate growth and productivity across the sector. The centre will

act as a hub for local engineering, manufacturing and agri-tech businesses to create a partnership with the College to help train the engineers of the future. What is in EMAT? EMAT includes an innovative hub, two workshops that will provide space for traditional engineering and manufacturing skills and modern industry practices, an electronics laboratory, Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/ CAM) suite, three classrooms, and a break-out space. Opportunities for Employers EMAT has been designed as a centre of innovation, producing highly skilled professionals, benefiting local businesses and the wider economy. The centre will work as a hub for schools and employers, providing resources which will stimulate and support innovation. The College curriculum will be employer-driven, providing the necessary skills for ‘Industry 4.0’ and meeting business needs.

an you believe it’s almost Christmas? Hasn’t time just flown by?! I’ve been on some super adventures and some wonderful walks this year. Beaches, villages, towns, woods – I’ve been to them all in 2019! Yes, I’ve had some lovely away-days, and I’m looking forward to many more. A new treat for me has been to help pick up the puppies from their various clubs at the end of the school day and at weekends. It’s always good fun to watch my human juggling my lead with school bags, water bottles, car keys and coats. You should see her face when I give her cause to use

I don’t have many doggy needs this Christmas, so I had a little word with my humans the other day, and wondered if they would give my Christmas money to a local Labrador charity. ‘Of course, Otis!’ smiled my human, scurrying off to fetch her purse and tablet to make the donation online. ‘Do you plan to gnaw on the Christmas tree again this year, doggo?’ asked my other human. ‘Well of course I do,’ I wagged enthusiastically. ‘If you could chew on Jo’s credit card instead, I’ll share my Christmas turkey with you,’ he whispered. It’s a deal!

Wishing you a calm one of my little bags, if you catch my drift. Tee hee. I’m the pups’ loudest cheerleader at hockey training on Saturday mornings. ‘Woof woof! I’m over here!’ I like to bark. ‘I’m their mascot. I give them luck,’ I tell my human. ‘You’ve given me a headache, Oats,’ she replies, rubbing her eyes.

Looking After the Elderly this Winter It’s a sad fact, but every year about 20,000 more people aged over 65 die in the winter months than at other times of the year. Elderly people are more vulnerable to illness during the winter. This is because the cold weather suppresses the immune system and increases the risk of contracting flu and serious colds, and can also contribute to cases of hypothermia, breathing problems and cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks. Keep an eye out for illness By increasing your visits you’ll be able to spot any signs of illness, and help get medical care quickly. All people aged over 65 are eligible for a free flu jab under the NHS. The vaccine greatly reduces the chances of contracting the virus and developing further complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. When you visit look out for any signs of illness. Do they seem drowsy? Is their home cold, but they don’t seem to be aware? Have they got a hacking cough? These are all signs that they have some kind of health problem that can be especially risky in winter. Keep them warm An important point surrounding care of the elderly is to make sure their home is warm. Older people take longer to get warm than younger people, and lose heat more quickly. As they are also often less active than younger people it is easy for them to get cold fast without realising it. The home should be kept to at least 18 degrees Celsius, and they should wear enough clothing to be warm. A hot water bottle (especially for those who are less mobile) is a good way to keep warm both in bed and when sitting in the living room. If you find an older person is very cold then: • Get them into warm, dry clothes and wrap them in warm blankets. A lot of heat is lost through the head so a woolly hat will help. • Give them a warm drink, like tea, coffee or hot chocolate. • Turn up the heating in their house to raise the ambient temperature. Don’t rub their body or use heat pads and similar items, because this opens up the blood vessels near the surface of the skin quickly and they can lose more heat in this

way. As they become colder they become more likely to suffer severe hypothermia and it can also lead to heart attacks and other complications. Offer a helping hand Quite often, older people will struggle along, even when things are getting too much, and be reluctant to ask for help. This can lead to them restricting their lifestyle as they worry about being unable to cope, and they can end up isolated and depressed. If you know an elderly person who lives alone or has poor health, then ask if you can do something for them this winter. Sometimes something as simple as picking up prescriptions, helping with shopping or putting out the rubbish is enough. Not only will you be doing something practical to improve their life, but they’ll know that

somebody is looking out for them, which can boost their confidence. Just be there Research by Age UK revealed that every month more than one million elderly people don’t get to speak to family, a friend or a neighbour. Quite often, care for the elderly doesn’t involve much at all. Older people don’t always need help, but most people like someone to talk to. So make sure you take the time to call them, or drop in for a cup of tea and a chat. The important thing is just to be there and to listen. Winter can be a depressing time for lots of people, but older people often suffer the most during this season. Everyone can help with the care of the elderly and it doesn’t take much to have a big impact. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 21

Honeypot Day Nursery & Pre-school

J

ust over 10 years ago, the local authority built a new school building for Weston Hills C of E Primary School and little did I know that when leaving the old school, my passing comment of ‘This building would make a good nursery and preschool’ would result in actually doing it. There have been up and downs along the way, but many more ‘ups’ than ‘downs! After a protracted purchase period, we finally owned the building and, with 4 members of staff and eight children, opened our doors in April 2008. Honeypot Day Nursery and Pre-school now has approximately 75 under 5’s on roll, together with 47 school children who attend various out of school sessions and 16 members of staff. As parents ourselves, we recognise the importance of providing high quality, affordable childcare in a local community. Our primary aims are: • To provide the highest quality standards in care and development through the creation of a warm, caring and stimulating environment. • To provide the best opportunity for each child to develop socially, physically, emotionally and educationally at their own rate as individuals. • To maintain close working relationships with parents, ensuring we work in partnership with the child’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. • To ensure children leave Honeypot with the necessary skills for the next step in their life as they start school. • For everyone to feel happy, safe and valued. We recognise that sending a child to Honeypot is usually the child’s first experience of care and education outside of the home and we aim to make it a happy and memorable one. We maintain records of every child’s achievements at the nursery, which are available for parents to access on-line with many, many pictures. Parents can contribute to this record and it therefore develops into a learning journey covering the whole period the child is with us, for parents to keep when the child leaves. Our staff are well qualified with a variety of qualifications from EYPS to Level

3. We usually take apprentices who will all be working towards achieving a level 3 qualification. We feel passionate about our role and expect high standards from each and every one of our team. The staff team is fabulous and many staff are also parents themselves. Children need to play, and we plan learning opportunities that are both fun and stimulating, aiming to develop enquiring minds. Children enjoy a variety of activities, both indoors and out – in all weathers! They may come home with works of art for the fridge, a beautiful building (from cardboard boxes) or cakes. Sometimes they come home with nothing, but they will have had a great time and developed new skills from the things they have done. We have a lot of singing and movement and during the summer we encourage parents to join us for ‘sports day’ – I use the term loosely! We have trips out, Christmas parties, visitors in (police, reptiles, ceramic painting) graduations, leavers and parents’ parties. Honeypot Day Nursery takes funded

children from 2 years old, where parents meet government set criteria. All 3 and 4 year old children can receive funded care for up to 15 hours per week during the school term (or a lower number stretched over the year) from the term after they turn 3. From September 2017, 3 and 4 year olds with working parents, may be entitled to receive a further 15 hours per week – taking the total to 30. We are happy to show you around our nursery, and talk to you about your childcare needs. For more information call: 01406 380803, email: office@ honeypotdaynursery.com or see our website www.honeypotdaynursery.com

Complementary Therapies: Depending on your individual requirements, there are many complementary therapies that can help improve your general wellbeing. Complementary therapies are named as such because they complement conventional medicine and work hand in hand with an individual’s health. Hypnotherapy – a pure state of relaxation Sue Wickham of Soul 2 Soul gives us the facts about hypnosis: ‘We all experience the hypnotic state throughout our daily lives, just before going into a deep sleep. There has been a lot of misconception put onto hypnosis due to the media and television. Hypnosis is not a state of sleep; you do not have the power over a person to take control of their thoughts. It is a joint decision where a person feels relaxed and comfortable to move into deeper relaxation. The hypnotic state is very similar to a deep meditation. You are aware of all noises around you and are fully aware of your surroundings. My clients always report how pleasurable and relaxing their experience of hypnosis has been. ‘Hypnotherapy is a natural therapy – a pure state of deep relaxation to enable a therapist to

bypass a person’s conscious mind to allow direct communication with the subconscious mind. It can be of benefit to many types of problems of a physical or psychological nature including: fears, phobias, smoking, weight, confidence, stress, sleep problems and anxiety – to name but a few.’ For more information visit the National Council for Hypnotherapy: www.hypnotherapists.org.uk. Acupuncture This type of therapy involves a therapist inserting fine needles into specific areas of the body to help with a range of ailments – from back pain and migraines, to arthritis and dental pain. Acupuncture is based on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years! This form of therapy works by helping the body’s ‘motivating energy’ or ‘life energy’,

known as qi, to move smoothly through the body’s pathways. The needles go into these channels and help the body to restore its balance. Acupuncturists believe that when the flow of qi is obstructed, ill health can occur. As a result, acupuncture aims to help make the flow of energy smooth again, thus helping the body to heal. The therapist may manipulate the needles from time to time to help to regulate the flow of the qi. For more information, please contact the British Acupuncture Council at www.acupuncture. org.uk. Reiki Developed in Japan, Reiki is used as a form of natural healing – used to release physical and mental blockages. It works by the therapist putting their hands in different positions either on

Your Health and Well Being

or above the body over the 7 ‘chakra’ points. It is believed that healing energy then flows from the therapist to the patient – Reiki flows through the areas where negative energy is present, replacing it with positive energy, and thus in turn allowing the ‘life energy’ to flow again. Reiki practitioners believe that it can help anyone suffering from physical pain, but it also said to help with a wide range of physical and emotional conditions – from mild anxiety and stress, to headaches and sleeplessness. Visit www.reikiassociation.org.uk for more information. Nutritional Therapy This is not just about healthy eating – as Jo van Bragt who holds a CIBTAC qualification in Diet & Nutrition states. Jo, based at Mishishi in Spalding explains: ‘It’s a form of complementary therapy

that can help improve your health. A therapist will work with you to produce a tailored nutritional course according to your individual needs.’ Jo states that health and nutrition therapy can have a range of benefits: ‘It can improve overall health, help reduce symptoms of common ailments such as IBS, Arthritis, Psoriasis and ADHD, and can help promote everyday weight control. It can also be used to help reduce stress and improve natural energy. Health and nutrition consultation can benefit young and old, male and female.’ For more information visit the Nutritional Therapy Council at www. nutritionaltherapycouncil.org.uk. Our team favourites Indian Head Massage This has relaxing massage has been practiced

for over a thousand years and includes the treatment of the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It is said to relieve tension, fatigue, headaches and eyestrain by manipulating energy channels. Aromatherapy This alternative therapy combines the use of essential oils, naturally produced by plans and trees. Sometimes it’s combined with massage. Aromatherapy is believed to help improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Reflexology This intensive massage works on the idea that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. It has been practiced for some 5000 years by the Egyptians and Chinese and is said to be a means of unblocking energy and promoting healing. Great for some serious relaxation!

Molsom & Associates are your local multi award winning Opticians, based in the centre of Spalding. Having been established in the centre since 1997, Andy Molsom and his experienced optical team pride themselves in offering “Quality Family Eyecare”. Having an eye examination is more than just looking at “how well your eyes can see”, It’s looking at the general health of the eye and on many an occasion an eye examination has revealed a lot more about a person’s health in general!

T

he independent practice offers NHS funded eye examinations, to all who are eligible. However, since introducing their Platinum Eyecare Plan approximately 2 years ago, more and more patients are joining this, giving them the peace of mind, their eyes deserve! For just a small monthly fee, Platinum members can get advice and be seen by their optometrist as much as they need. The Platinum Eye Examination is an extended appointment to allow time for extras tests and scans to be performed and discussed with each individual. Including digital photography of the back of the eye, Topcon OCT 3D scans enabling the optometrists to see parts of the eyes otherwise hidden from view. With a combined 10 years plus experience of interpreting these scans, we feel we offer a fantastic service by building a more complete overview of the health of your eyes. By repeating these scans each visit, much smaller and earlier signs of sight threatening conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, age related macular degeneration and retinal detachments can be detected enabling prompt treatment when needed. Platinum Eyecare Plan Members also benefit from exclusive discounts and offers, which are available from day one of joining, this

popular membership scheme has proven to be a hit with patients of all ages . The Platinum Eyecare Plan is open to all patients so whether you are new to the practice, an existing loyal patient or a returning patient be sure to talk to the friendly staff at Molsom & Associates for more information. This year Molsom & Associates have been excited to be shortlisted again for recognition at the SightCare Awards 2019, celebrating Independent Opticians. They are also eagerly awaiting the results of the 2019 South Holland business

awards, where they have been short listed for Customer Care and Business Innovation Awards! Part of these nominations are credited to their new mascot, Molsom Mole. He has joined the community project at Molsom & Associates providing local pre-schools and primary schools with visits and support. The aim is to get all children and parents to understand the importance of having an eye examination before children start “big school”, even before if there are any worries or family history concerns. A child is never too young to have their first eye exam if the parent is worried. Children also do not need to know their alphabet to have their first eye examination, pictures and even colours are available along with other testing methods. What is important, is making the appointment to ensure your child can maximise their

learning potential when they start school and then maintaining regular examinations as advised by the Optometrist. Molsom Mole has also assisted Andy Molsom presenting the Young Achiever category, sponsored by Molsom & Associates, at the 2019 Pride of South Lincolnshire awards. He has attended several fayres over the Summer and is excited to be visiting one or two Christmas events as well. So keep your eyes open and say hi! His favourite event this year though was the Pumpkin Parade in Spalding, where the fireworks and music had him dancing in the streets, while enjoying lots of cuddles and photos of course! For any help, advice or booking of appointments please call the practice on 01775 713366. More information is available on their webpage www. molsom.co.uk or on their Facebook page.

Maximise Your Career at th e Office Christmas Party

It may have seemed ages away but here we are about to embark on the season of Christmas Parties and soon there will be talk of this year’s drunk colleagues, ‘secret Santas’ and who was the office bore. Is it any wonder that so many people start looking for a job in the New Year? Does the line ‘What I don't like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day’ sound familiar to you? Well take action and think! The annual office party can boost your career but, it can also break it. Do attend. Your office party is not an optional event. Even if you despise the thought of spending a whole evening with the people you work with every day, it’s a good idea to make an appearance, it shows that you are part of the team. Don’t dress inappropriately The venue will determine the dress code so make sure you know what it is. Women are advised to stay away from slinky dresses, low-plunging necklines, short-short skirts or tight-fitting trousers and, men should refrain from unbuttoning more than two buttons on their shirts and wearing overly fitted shirts that show off their muscles. Do some networking This is a good time to talk to people you wouldn’t normally come across and the boss. This could help you in the long term in terms of forging alliances, helping to get things done or just raising your profile. Don’t talk shop. Do you want to be seen as

34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

the office bore? The office party gives you the chance to get to know people as people not just ‘Sarah from HR’. Do drink in moderation. Excessive drinking is the number one cause of office party ‘incidents’. Remember, it is a marathon not a sprint and it is likely that you will have a long evening ahead of you. But, by the time you realise this you may have already consumed enough alcohol to sink a battleship and not quite be with it. Stick to your limit, drink slowly or alternate between alcohol and water and, if it’s too late for that, then switch to soft drinks and mince pies. And resist the temptation to indulge in tequila shots or flaming sambucca or you may end up losing more than your inhibitions! Don’t make a move on a colleague. After a few hours and a few beers even the ones you’ve never noted before can look like a goddess. Did you know that recent research shows that 41% of workers admit to having

a sexual liaison with a co-worker at an office party. Before you make a bee-line for the person you’ve had your eye on all year, do yourself a favour, stay put and think, ‘Is this a good idea?’ ‘Probably not’, is the likely answer. Do watch your language. Remember the reason why you are at the Christmas party in the first place is because you have a job. Avoid saying things you wouldn’t say on a normal office day. At a former job a colleague of mine told our CEO exactly what he thought of his speech and it wasn’t how wonderful it was! Consequently, the Christmas card from the boss contained his P-45. And, for ****’s sake, don’t swear! Above all, enjoy the party. Strive to be remembered for the right reasons and not for your lustful antics or David Brent dancing. In the words of the great man himself from “The Office”, when asked how he would like to be remembered, he replied: “Simply, as, the man who put a smile on the face of all who he met.”

units. Hide bottles and brushes away in the drawers and use the display units to put your mirror, favourite plant or prized products at centre stage. Embrace the Scandi trend and plump for crisp white cabinets. This timeless shade is easy to pair with any bathroom colour scheme, whether your walls are sophisticated dove grey or traditional blue.

Maximise space by storing items under the stairs Nooks and crannies are perfect for storage. You can easily transform the empty or untidy space underneath your staircase into an organised haven using a range of pretty boxes and baskets. Unlocking the potential of this pocket of space can help you find a new home for knick-knacks, whether books, toys or unused shoes. Without a door to conceal them, it also gives you the opportunity to get creative in how you display your storage. Stack your boxes and baskets into streamlined piles to tidy unsightly clutter.

Streamline your wardrobe If your room is bursting with clothes, you could do with some wardrobe storage ideas. Take the strain off your cupboards with a set of rails, hooks and baskets and rummage no more. These nifty space-saving solutions not only look good, they save you time and effort – as every time you’re pondering what to wear, all your best clothes and accessories are wrinkle-free and ready to dig out. Take it one step further and try colour coding your clothes – one hook for darks, one for lights and one for brights. It’ll make picking your outfit that much easier, just what you need on a busy morning.

Create a clean look in your bathroom Breathe new life into your bathroom with a chic set of storage

Keep it playful in your children’s bedroom Keeping clutter to a minimum is a doddle with a clever cube organiser.

Balancing cute character with practicality is key for retaining the personality of a room, this playful bedroom storage idea can really funk up your kids’ space. Favourite toys and books can be displayed in all their glory, while colourful drawers offer a home for all your children’s art and crafts. Give books a tidy makeover Swap your swaying towers of tales for a neat box of easily reachable reads by laying your cube storage system on its side. This tidy – and reachable - collection of your children’s favourite books makes for easy bedtime stories and will help declutter their space – the perfect bedroom or playroom storage idea. The separate blocks of a book organiser keep stories stood up to encourage reading. What’s more, the colourful covers will add extra personality to the space. Make laundry day a breeze Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a big difference in your weekly routine - save time sorting out dirty clothes with stylish natural laundry baskets.

40 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

With three boxes you can easily sort your delicates and woollens from your regular wash. This laundry storage idea will make the weekly load that bit easier to manage, so you can tackle piles of unwashed jeans and mucky jumpers without any fuss. Treat yourself to this set of laundry baskets and you’ll reap the benefits of a clutter-free room all year round! Create order under your sink Lurking under your sink could be a mess of anti-bac sprays, cloths and polishes – but a caddy can keep all this cleaning gear in one place. Not only is it useful for storing your assortment of products to buff, shine and polish your home, if you get on with an easy grip handle it is ideal for carrying it around when you’re moving from room to room. Tidy up crafts Take a simple approach to keeping your home tidy with a range of spruced up plant pots. Cute and kitsch, these painted beauties are perfect for storing miscellaneous items such as make up or craft equipment, and can add a pop of colour to your home, too.

Toyota Corolla Touring Sports What’s a ‘Touring Sports’? In this case, it’s not a high-speed gentleman’s car, that’s for sure. It’s just a posh term for an ‘estate’. And not the net worth of an individual kind, either. Simply put, the Corolla Touring Sports is like the Corolla hatchback, but with a larger load area grafted on. And that’s what makes it a top family wagon. The new Corolla – in whichever shape you go for, is a handsome, chiselled vehicle. Inside and out, the Japanese motor is every bit a model you’d be happy

Toyota. You do with the likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, but this marque seems to make you acceptable on the road – and in the school

Luggage-wise, you’ll get a lot into this estate car. It’s by no means the biggest of its type, but the 2.0-litre hybrid, on test here, boasts 581-litres of load space. Of course, if you fold the rear seats, and kick the kids out, the Corolla turns into the perfect tip-run workhorse. to take the kids to school in. drivers in heated traffic situations. The Corolla Touring Sports makes motoring in Britain almost pleasant again. Inside, there’s room for four people – or five, if you really want to sit someone in the middle of the rear bench. My eldest daughter was sandwiched between two child seats on the way to Alton Towers. The trip was just under two hours – and she only started complaining an hour into the trip. The thought of the entertainment at the end of the journey was the one thing to keep her from losing the plot with her siblings. So, think of this as a fourseater car – and only a five-up machine if you have a small human being willing to take the short straw. Luggage-wise, you’ll get a lot into this estate car. FACTS load space. Of course, if you fold the rear seats, and kick the kids out, the Corolla turns into the perfect tip-run workhorse. The Touring Sports is not just a practical set of wheels, though. The £30,345 flagship ‘Excel’ version lent to me will hit 62mph from a standing start in 8.1 seconds. That’s reasonably swift. And because a petrol and electric mix propel it, the car is frugal, managing between 50-60mpg. Co2 emissions are low at 89g/km – making this a cheap vehicle to tax. It’s perfect company car material, too. A top car in many ways then – apart from one thing – the price. You may have noticed I slipped that £30k figure into the last paragraph. It’s a lot of money. Mind you, this is the top Excel trim – and the most basic Touring Sports is £22,575. That only has a 1.2-litre unit, though – with 0-62mph taking 10.8 seconds and mpg around 58. Still, its cargo capacity is larger than the 2.0-litre version at 596-litres. And if you have an aversion to Toyota, then the similar priced Ford Focus estate might work for you – but the load area is a bit smaller. The choice is yours, folks.

Business Focus

Mr Smooth Mr Smooth was set up in 2004 and is still going strong!

M

y company Mr Smooth was set up in 2004 and is still going strong, the name Mr Smooth actually came from a nick name that I had been given because of the quality of my plastering work. I have been plastering from the age of 16 and was trained on the job. I have plenty of experience in all aspects of plastering work i.e plaster boarding, rendering, skimming, coving and screeding floors. I always like to come and price a job personally, so to make sure that the customer gets exactly what they want.

I am friendly, honest and I am happy to work around each customers personal situation I am a family man with three young children and understand how to work around doing work on your house with small children still at home and that some customers prefer to take one room at a time. No job is to small I am always happy to help. I have no particular area of work I will happily go where ever the customer needs I have even gone to the south of France and done work in London, but I have also worked in houses two doors away.

“I would highly recommend Danny “Mr Smooth” for all types of plastering/flooring etc, his quality and finish is exceptional“ Gordon Scott “Tradesman with a conscience, a dying breed. Clean, tidy and professional . Recommended to many of my own clients and they have always been more than complimentary of Danny and his teams services.” Cliff Hawes
