Welcome to the April issue

your LOCAL COMM

Happy Easter!

Welcome to the April issue of Simply Spalding. Fingers crossed we are in for some good weather for the Easter holidays as it is a later celebration this year. I am certainly hoping so as we have booked for a few days down in Devon camping whilst the children are on holiday, thermals at the ready! In this issue we learn about CBD oil from Hapi Hemp, Annette from The Village Midwives talks about de-clutter not only our cupboards but also our minds too. We have once again partnered with local companies to sponsor dogs at Jerry Green Rescue Centre who need to find a new home this Spring. The sponsorship revenue pays for the advert for each four legged friend looking for a home as well as a 15% donation is made directly to the charity. Is there space on your walks and on your sofa for a four legged friend? In Home & Property we look at utilising pots and containers to create interest within the garden, our recipe of the month is Terryaki Salmon (it’s a good one!) and Tim test drives the Ford Fiesta ST. DON’T FORGET: March 31st at 2am is officially when British Summer Time begins, so move your clocks an hour forward. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue, don’t eat too much chocolate and see you next month!

South Holland District Council purchases 18 new affordable homes South Holland District Council have taken another important step in expanding its stock of housing for residents in the area, signing an agreement to purchase 18 homes across the district from a local building company. The one, two and three bed homes are situated in Donington, Cowbit and Moulton. They will provide good-quality housing giving residents access to well-maintained, affordable properties that meet their needs. The purchases also continue to further the council’s ambition to support and partner local businesses in South Holland, with the houses being acquired from Spalding based developers Ashwood Homes. Six of the homes across the three sites will also be available as part of the Council’s shared ownership scheme. The scheme will allow people who cannot afford the mortgage on 100% of a home to buy a share of the property (between 25% and 75% of the value), and pay rent on the remaining share. Shares can be

increased over time, eventually raising to full ownership. More details on these properties can be found on rightmove. It adds to other development work already underway for the Council, including the building of 34 new affordable homes underway at Small Drove in Weston, which will also include shared ownership opportunities. Cllr Colin Johnson, portfolio holder for corporate delivery and strategic oversight was delighted to see the council expanding its housing stock, saying: “It’s great news that South Holland District Council is continuing to

invest throughout the district, and these new homes will add to our existing developments in providing excellent, well-equipped places for our residents to live. “Quality and desirable housing, built with the use of local contractors and developers, is invaluable to supporting the growth of South Holland’s infrastructure, hugely benefitting the economy of the area. “It is great that through this and our work through Welland Homes we are expanding housing provision for residents across the whole district.”

Aiming For Sky High Air Ambulance Support Air ambulance crews save countless lives by reaching incidents within minutes to provide critical care for the most seriously ill and injured people directly at the scene. And as charities, they do so with no government funding. Now people across the area are joining together to thank local air ambulances by fundraising with Lincolnshire Co-op through its Community Champions scheme. Together with its members and colleagues the Society is raising money until June for Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. The partnership will help the charity raise vital funds needed to fly 24/7. It’s currently in a twoyear trial, phasing up from its current 7am-7pm seven day a week cover to a full 24 hours a day, and must increase funds to support this move. The charity receives no direct government or NHS funding – it’s fuelled only by fundraising and generous contributions from the community. A donation will be made through the Community Champions scheme each time a member shops in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet. Proceeds from the carrier bag levy will also go into the pot. Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance 25th Anniversary pin badges will be sold in Lincolnshire Co-op outlets across the two counties for a suggested donation of £1, and there’ll be collection tins for customers to give any spare change. Lincolnshire Co-op food stores will also sell special lemon slices from Gadsby’s, the Society’s own bakery, with 10p from each pack sold added to the fundraising. Generous holidaymakers can also donate £1 when booking a break in the Society’s 14 travel branches until June. Meanwhile, colleagues in Lincolnshire Co-op outlets will try to reach new heights with fundraising instore including a Wear It Yellow Day on either Saturday 30th March or Sunday 31st March during Discover Lincolnshire Weekend. There’ll be quiz sheets with prizes including a chance to meet the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance crew, a helicopter flight gift experience and more. There’ll also be fun in the Waterside Shopping Centre in Lincoln on Saturday 30th March to drum up support. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Engagement

Manager Sam Turner said: “Air ambulances cover vast areas – over 3,500 square miles across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance – but can reach someone who’s in trouble in minutes. “They are mobile A&E departments flying some of the best medics straight to the scenes of incidents, working together with our emergency services. Their crews are so skilled they can carry out open heart surgery by the roadside. There’s no other way to say it – they are lifesavers. “Together with our colleagues and members we’re proud to say thank you by fundraising to help them carry on this incredible work.” The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is called out on average three times a day, and often more. Since 1994 the charity has attended more than 19,700 missions. It’s also the only Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in the East Midlands

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Area Fundraising Manager Gemma Shaw said: “We are all immensely excited about working with Lincolnshire Co-op. “With its support it can not only help us to

Since its launch in 2000, East Anglian Air Ambulance has attended over 25,000 lifesaving missions. It aims to become a 24/7 Helicopter Emergency Medical Service by 2020. It carries out over 1,800 missions every year and needs to raise £12,000 every day to keep saving lives. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 5

Flag raising ceremony to recognise Commonwealth Day South Holland District Council hosted a short ceremony at their Priory Road offices in Spalding on Monday 11 March, to raise the blue and yellow flag in recognition of Commonwealth Day. Throughout the day more than 1,000 flags were raised across the 53 countries celebrating a ‘Connected Commonwealth’ and its opportunities for a diverse mix of people, governments and institutions to connect and cooperate with one another. 2019 also marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Commonwealth as it is configured today, with old ties and new links enabling co-operation towards social, political and economic

development. The Council’s event consisted of a ceremonial raising of the Flag of the Commonwealth of Nations, led by South Holland District Council Chairman Cllr Rodney Grocock who was joined by former service personnel, fellow councillors, council staff and the general public. South Holland District Council Chairman, Cllr Rodney Grocock, said: “It is important to recognise the great history of the Commonwealth and the strong future that lies ahead. As a Council we are committed to upholding the values set out in the Commonwealth Charter and joining the 52 other nations in celebrating this great and diverse union.”

South Holland’s new provider Parkwood Leisure to focus on customer service and cleanliness Parkwood Leisure is set to enhance facilities and services now it has taken over operations at South Holland District Council’s leisure centres from March 1. One of the UK’s leading leisure management companies, Parkwood is now running Castle Sports Complex and Pool in Spalding and Peele Leisure Centre in Long Sutton after being awarded a fiveyear contract by the council. As part of its plans to increase use of the centres and ensure activities are affordable, Parkwood will be freezing existing prices until April 2020. “We’re excited to be taking over and are committed to engaging with residents to fulfil our aim of helping communities to be happier and healthier,” said Glen Hall, Parkwood’s director of operations. “We’ll be investing in new equipment and broadening the current programme, while giving both centres an updated look and feel. Residents can be assured that we’ll also be focusing on the basics such as high standards of service and cleanliness.”

April will see the replacement of cardio vascular equipment at Castle Sports Complex gym with new running machines, bikes and cross trainers. Replacement bikes will also be provided at Peele Leisure Centre. Virtual group cycling will be introduced to complement instructor-led sessions at Castle Sports Complex while the existing learn-to-swim programme will be enhanced with additional water safety teaching. All activities will continue to be reviewed by Parkwood, which manages more than 90 facilities on behalf of councils and schools throughout England and Wales. Councillor Gary Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Leisure, said he was delighted the council will now be working with Parkwood and looked forward to the future. “Parkwood’s commitment to ‘getting back to basics’ in terms of providing residents with high levels of cleanliness and customer service is very welcome and a positive step forward. “The council will be working closely with

Parkwood over the coming weeks, months and years to deliver what the residents of South Holland want – good leisure provision for everybody in the district.” Both centres will have dedicated website pages which can be accessed via www.leisurecentre.com.

Nick’s Notes Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages....

Worth Cllr Nick

V

olunteers are an vitally important cog in the wheel of our local communities without whom we would struggle to exist. We have volunteer police and firefighters to keep us safe, LIVES volunteers to help in medical emergencies and who help out at at many events especially over the summer. We have volunteers helping in our day to day lives in libraries, museums, hospitals, Citizens Advice, shops and a mass of them in a variety of sports, as coaches, first aiders, safeguarding and just as spectators. Volunteers run village halls, community centres and churches along with many charities, all of which need chairman, treasurer’s and

secretaries to survive. The time commitment is enormous but hugely rewarding, although there are times when even I have to say enough! Volunteering is something that is ingrained in the people of Lincolnshire and South Holland and as a politician I can’t say thank you enough. Sadly in times when funding from central government to local government continues to be uncertain, but is still very much on a downward slope, we have to look at different ways of doing things to make the wheel go round, while maintaining as many of our services to as high a standard as possible. Volunteering makes up a major part of that, but there does come

8 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

a time when that itself can be unsustainable. People have to have a life as well. It was therefore a huge joy to see around 120 volunteers at a recent buffet lunch put on by Cllr’s Tracey Carter, Francis Biggadike and myself to thank them for their efforts in the Holbeach area and to realise how appreciated that is. Not only was it nice for them to be appreciated, it was also an opportunity for them to chat to other volunteers in different sectors, getting ideas, sharing innovation and understanding how they all fit into and contribute to the bigger picture and indeed the impact they have on the local economy as well. Importantly they also realise

that they are not on their own, there are many others with whom they can offload and share advice. This was our second thank you buffet and I know from their feedback that they are already looking forward to next year’s event and I very much hope it is something we as local politicians can continue provide. It is rewarding both for them and us and there is a mutual appreciation of the work they do, no less than by our Member of Parliament, Sir John Hayes, who as ever was there chatting to them all, along with a short speech of thanks, which was greatly appreciated.

Advice Getting repairs done if you’re renting privately Your landlord is responsible for most major repairs to your home if you rent privately. This includes: • the structure of the property, for example walls, roof, windows and doors • sinks, baths, toilets • pipes and wiring • heating and hot water, for example the boiler • the safety of gas and electrical appliances You’ll be responsible for minor repairs, for example changing fuses and light bulbs. You’ll also have to fix anything you’ve damaged. If your home is damp, your landlord might not be responsible. It depends on what type of damp it is and what caused it. Your landlord doesn’t have to make

fixed sooner than a leaky tap.

improvements to a property, for example putting in double glazing. They might have to make reasonable adjustments - for example, if you have a disability and need a handrail to help you get upstairs. You won’t be responsible for repairs caused by other people, for example vandalism. Your tenancy agreement or statement of terms might give you extra rights, so it’s a good idea to check your paperwork

done. Unless it’s an emergency, your landlord should give you at least 24 hours’ notice if they want to visit your home to see the damage or do repairs.

Write to your landlord Write to your landlord as soon as you notice a problem. You could be held responsible if it gets worse. It’s best to put it in writing - send it to your landlord and keep a copy yourself. If a letting agent manages the property for your landlord, write to them and they should talk to your landlord. The letting agent will be responsible for making sure your landlord does the repairs. If your landlord’s responsible for the repairs, they should do them in a ‘reasonable’ amount of time. What counts as reasonable depends on the problem. For example, a broken boiler should be

s U o t k l Ta

Getting evidence You should get evidence of the problem, for example: • photos of the damage, particularly if the problem gets worse over time • any letters, texts, emails or notes of any conversations between you and your landlord or letting agent • receipts if you’ve had to replace damaged items • letters from your GP if the problem has made you ill • a copy of your tenancy agreement Keep any evidence you’ve got - you might need it later if you have to take further action to get repairs

If your landlord won’t do the repairs Keep paying your rent. If you don’t, you’ll get into rent arrears and your landlord might then try to evict you. You can complain about your landlord or complain about your letting agent if they won’t do the repairs. If the problem is affecting your health or safety You can report your landlord to the Environmental Health department at your local council if your home is in a bad state of repair. You should do this if your home is unsafe or making you ill. This could be, for example because of: • a gas leak • a broken step • mould or damp • mice or cockroaches

that started after 1 October 2015, you might have more protection against being evicted. An Environmental Health Officer will look at your home and order your landlord to do repairs if they think it’s harmful to your health or safety. Keep evidence of what they say or any report they write. If your home is found to be unfit to live in, you might need to find a new place to live. Your council should get back to you quickly if the problem is severe or if someone in your home is very young, ill or elderly. If the council doesn’t take any action or doesn’t act quickly enough, you could ask them to look at their decision again - for example if you’ve got evidence that the problem is worse than they thought. If you’re still not happy with your council’s decision, you can complain. Contact your local council and ask how you can make a complaint. If your landlord still won’t fix the problem, contact Citizens Advice. Mini Police

Mini Police invitation to LCFC Junior Takeover day. Lincolnshire Mini Police is in 122 schools across our county, it is a program built around “pupil voice”. The children receive an element of learning across a 14 project curriculum and then the teams in all the schools have the opportunity to take it further with their peers and in some cases into their communities. Most schools have Mini teams of 6-10 pupils spread evenly across year groups 5 and 6 which is their last two years of primary school before making that transition onto secondary. The program is empowering and builds resilience. On the 16th February 18 Mini Police officers from across the county were given a unique opportunity to join Lincoln City Football Club for their second ever “Junior Takeover Day” where they were tasked with policing the Lincoln vs Stevenage game with various chaperones who are currently working for Lincolnshire Police in different roles. The Mini Police attended in full uniform after being selected via a random number generator and luckily we had an even spread, so able to invite 18 different children from 18 different schools spread evenly across the county. The children along with their parents joined us at Sincil Bank, home of Lincoln City Football Club since 1895 where the parents were given a ticket and able to watch the football whilst the children were left to “police” the match along with their designated officer, meaning two of the children took on the role of Gold commander

for ACC Shaun West and were interviewed on Look North. All the children started their duties by chatting to the crowds, saying hello and giving plenty of high fives, they were then treated to a birds eye view of the pitch/ ground in the control tower. After a little walk they were able to watch a drone take flight and help to control it along with one of our designated Drones officer’s in Lincolnshire, they were all amazed with how clear the ground could be seen using the cameras and it raised lot’s of thoughts and questioning about how the police could use a drone to help people in need. It was then time to go to the pitch and watch the crowd this made the Mini Police officers “tummy’s tingle” but they all said this was the most exciting part of the day. All the children involved in the day were issued with a fabulous certificate to congratulate their efforts. The Mini Police officers were brave and resilient in their duties and took the crowds in their stride, they were all very grown up and enjoyed talking with their peers from different schools about their own individual programmes and PCSO’s this hasn’t been able to happen before within the Mini Police programme. This programme is about building Ambassadors for Lincolnshire and this day certainly took a step towards that goal for the children involved. A big well done to all.

Wisbech Grammar School Mr Chris Staley , Headmaster at Wisbech Grammar School has announced, this week , a forward thinking and innovative plan that will have far-reaching benefits for pupils across the School. Mr Chris Staley , Headmaster at Wisbech Grammar School has announced, this week , a forward thinking and innovative plan that will have far-reaching benefits for pupils across the School. •School classrooms are being transformed with new designs based around Harkness tables. This is a method of teaching and learning that involves 12-14 pupils seated around a large oval table which encourages pupils to discuss ideas, work collaboratively and shifts the focus away from the more traditional, teacher at the front of the class, approach. •6th Form pupils will benefit

from a new 6th Form Centre which will allow pupils to have a dedicated space for specialist 6th Form subjects, collaborative and silent working spaces, a lecture facility, plus a café and common room space all with the aim of supporting academic success at A-level. •The old 6th Form house will be developed into a new International Boarding House and will be available for overseas pupils from September 2019. •Science and Maths, Humanities, alongside and Creative Hubs will be established which will mean pupils benefit from having focused academic environment s that utilise the expertise of specialist teaching staff and resources. The decision behind the new state of the art plans at WGS is based on the Headmaster’s vision of continuous improvement, and

year on year the School is raising standards to become a beacon of excellence for pupils. The driving forces behind these projects are twofold. Firstly, an improvement in Teaching and Learning and the classroom environment for pupils. Secondly, to begin the process of clustering departments into faculties in order to give subjects a clearer sense of identity and to create functional zones around the WGS campus. This gives the opportunity to really focus on subject areas that naturally complement and maximise opportunities across departments. In addition, the Governing Body has supported the Headmaster’s decision to launch an International Strategy. The idea of introducing a small group of overseas pupils into the WGS community is one that is founded on the Headmaster’s desire

to continue to widen the outlook of WGS pupils and, at the same time, prepare them for the world in which they will ultimately work. The School will be opening its doors to a small group of pupils from China in September 2019. On the back of the visit by the Headmaster at the end of last year, the School has seen a significant amount of interest from China and at present 7 pupils are signed up and committed to joining in September 2019. In fact one pupil will arrive in April for the start of the Trinity term and will be staying with a host family off campus. Therefore the catalyst for the next phase of development is to provide somewhere for pupils to live, but it also presents WGS with an ideal opportunity to fulfil the School’s ambition to improve the Teaching and Learning environments and group departments together.

Boston College’s annual Apprenticeship Awards Blazing a Trail Boston College apprentices and employers enjoyed an evening of success celebrating their achievements at the Apprenticeship Awards ceremony hosted at the College’s Sam Newsom Centre. Following the theme of National Apprenticeship Week, ‘Blazing a Trail’, the annual awards event, which was sponsored by Lincolnshire Co-Op, recognises the hard work, commitment and achievements of both apprentices and employers over the past academic year. Heather Lee, Head of People and Performance at Lincolnshire Co-Op said “At Lincolnshire Co-op we aim to make life better in our communities and supporting apprenticeships is a great way to do this. We were really pleased to work with Boston College to recognise local people achieving apprenticeships, supported by local employers.” Boston College currently trains over 450 apprentices, and out of these 16 apprentices were nominated to receive an ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award for outstanding achievement 14 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

and progression during their apprenticeships. Jo Maher, Boston College Principal said, “I would like to congratulate and thank all those who attended our Apprenticeship Awards, it was a great opportunity to celebrate the shared success of our hard working apprentices. They are all fantastic role models and we have every confidence that they will contribute successfully to our economic growth and prosperity. We were also delighted to be able to recognise the support and commitment shown by Lincolnshire employers towards apprenticeships. I am grateful to our staff, who have experience in the industries our apprentices are working in, enabling us to foster and develop our much valued employer relationships.” The ‘Outstanding Apprentice of the Year’ Award was presented to Harriet Ingamells, Apprentice in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Thrilled with her win, Harriet said, “I was very surprised to have received the ‘Outstanding Apprentice of the Year’ award. It has helped me feel valued

within my role and boosted my confidence. I am so lucky for the support I have received from Boston College and the relationship between the College and my employer.” Fourteen employers also received a special recognition award in a variety of categories, with a special ‘Individual Contribution to Apprenticeships’ award being presented to Tracey Robinson from Oldrids and Downtown.

Advice Worth Hearing!

Y

ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life.

If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a privately run local family business with full time hearing centres located in Peterborough, King’s Lynn & Horncastle. We also hold day clinics at Whittlesey and Kirton Medical Centre. We are proud to have some of the

most sophisticated testing equipment available and offer FREE hearing tests, and if preferred, full diagnostic hearing assessments in a sound proof environment, or in the comfort of your own home. We provide independent and impartial advice and can provide a FREE hearing aid trial (with no obligation). We are able to create a personalised solution for all your hearing requirements based on lifestyle, cosmetics & importantly - budget. Our business model is based around good old fashioned values with free after- care which is second to none. What other Services do you offer? We also provide a comprehensive wax removal service through irrigation, micro suction & instrumentation. Wax removal is becoming more & more difficult to have administered through some GP surgeries and can sometimes involve frustrating & lengthy delays. We also offer advice on Tinnitus Management & provide custom solutions for noise and hearing protection. Are hearing aids big and clumsy? These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses. Most people are amazed at the size & performance of modern hearing aids. They help you hear every day sounds and make it much easier to follow conversations. Your confidence in talking to people should improve & everyday & social occasions will become less of a struggle. Some hearing aids also help reduce certain unwanted background noises & if you have tinnitus, you may find it disturbs you less when you wear a hearing aid. Some hearing aids can connect to telephones, mobile telephones, televisions, computers, IPads etc. For those that find hearing aids fiddly, there are now rechargeable solutions so batteries do not have to be changed.

It’s never too early to look after your hearing. Help yourself & those around you and book a free assessment with us now. It really can make a world of difference! What makes you different from the competition? We are a local family run business with many years of experience. We have access to all makes and models and can provide impartial advice accordingly. It’s our combination of an extensive range of products, experience, continuity, in depth testing, dedicated time and attention to detail that is a winner. If you spend time with someone to get their prescription and fitting correct, the quality of the final result will always be superior. We are a Hearing Care Company that is 100% dedicated and focused on hearing alone.

How can I tell if I have a hearing problem? Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation or having to turn the T.V up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book your FREE hearing assessment with ourselves by calling one of the numbers above, and we can then assess whether you have any degree of hearing loss.

What should I do next? The most important thing to do is not ignore it! In most cases hearing deteriorates gradually & it often affects people around you more than yourself. Wearing a hearing aid can make a real difference to your quality 16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Our four-legged friend has been tootling around trees and becoming pals with pigeons in Bourne Woods this month, and he’s straining at his lead to tell you about it…

I

t’s wellies, waggy tails and walkies in Bourne Woods for this furry chap and his human family! The sun is filtering through branches, birds are singing, look – there goes a squirrel! And cooing softly away is a wood pigeon perched on a low-lying branch. There are trails and tracks going this way and that, ponies, pushbikes, fellow dogs and children charging cheerfully about. My two-legged puppies are having a whale of a time crunching through leaves and leaping over logs. ‘Mind the mud Otis!’ they call out kindly. Too late. I now seem to be something of a brown Labrador. I lead the way, with my family eagerly following. Nose to the ground – so many smells that it’s sniffing on overtime. ‘Where

are we going Otis?’ they ask me excitedly, as I try to steer them off course, into a tricky-looking thicket of brambles and branches. ‘Have you found a badger? A hedgehog? Treasure? He’s struck

gold!’ That’s right – doggy gold! I emerge triumphant with a stick in my mouth. My family deflate a little, but I couldn’t be happier. Dotted along our way are wooden benches on which the little humans sit to rest their weary legs. I settle my soft head in their laps. ‘Come on!’ I say, ‘follow me up this hill!’ ‘It’s alright for you Otis,’ they tell me, looking longingly at my legs, ‘you have four-wheel drive!’ After all that walking and working up an appetite it’s time for a tasty pub lunch. I stretch myself out under the table but no one’s dropping anything today. ‘Here you are Otis,’ whispers my human, handing me a little something. Is it a spare sausage? No! It’s the stick I found earlier in Bourne Woods! Hurrah! I start to gnaw on it happily. What a great day!

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

I

n a rare half an hour of peace (the tiny overlord is having a nap!), I find myself sitting with a cup of tea and watching the world go by through the kitchen window. I am trying to engage in a slower pace of life, so instead of cramming in an extra bit of work, I am taking the time to watch the sun shining through the clouds. I have spent the last few days emptying cupboards and cleaning which is just as ‘mindful’ for me. I’ve been on a bit of a cleaning and rearranging frenzy in the last week, and I do wonder whether my ‘nesting’ instinct has come a little late to the party. Spring cleaning for me is about letting the light and fresh air in, cleaning the skeletons from the cupboard and preparing to start the year afresh. February and March is more of a new year to me than January 1st; I am usually still in some sort of cheese coma from the Christmas holidays and the last thing I feel like doing is clearing out for a ‘new year, new me’. So, taking my own advice, I have emptied my wardrobes of their skeletons (and shoes I never wear, and clothes that will always look better on the hanger!). Fortunately, no physical skeletons were found, but plenty of ghosts hanging on in there. After dividing the contents into what can be let go and what should frame my new year, I have cleaned and essential oiled the insides before hanging back what is to be kept. Not only is

everything in there easier to find, everything smells lovely and that smug feeling of every corner having had the light bounced off it, feels good. Spring cleaning is just as much about mental health for me. Letting go of the unneeded, tidying and sorting… it’s what we should all be doing for our brains and not just in the spring. It’s good to let the light into our souls – clear away the accumulated funk, banish the shadows and see everything as it is. Just as hiding away clothes makes your wardrobe messy, hiding away emotions and living in denial is no good for anything. It takes such energy to hold on to things that are not right for you, or not meant for you. Although the initial letting go is a tsunami of emotions – anger, regret, grief, desperation…what is left is a refreshing, beautiful new perspective on what could be. This spring, I am trying to let the light filter through the whole of my home and soul. It’s difficult for me examining things so closely in the sunshine, but the renewed energy I am finding is very positive and hugely calming. This month I encourage you to spring clean your wardrobes and your mind – I can guarantee the ghosts in there are no where near as scary as you think they are.

Love Annette xx

Family Life

Easter Days at the Farm During the Easter holidays it can be hard to think of new activities to entertain the children but often it doesn’t need to be an extravagant. There are so many craft activities you can steal from the internet if the weather isn’t kind or why not take a picnic to a local park? If that isn’t your thing, how about a meal at the end of the week at your favourite restaurant as a reward for good behaviour? Most children love to get outdoors so why not think about starting a new family hobby and invest in some camping equipment? The great outdoors is a brilliant way to bond and spend time together without distractions from emails, social media or the television. Get back to nature and enjoy time with your loved ones. For my two they love a visit to a farm park and it seems to suit all ages from babies up to pre-teens when we have been on days out with friends with older children.

Benefits of Visiting Local Farms Encourages Language Development To identify animals as they stand before your baby or toddler, carries so much weight as they are absorbing vocabulary words. As they become preschoolers, you can begin to identify differences in male vs. female vocabulary in regards to the animals. For example, a duck can now be a duck, drake and a duckling. Sensory Learning There are so many sensory opportunities at a farm: the textures of the animal fur, the dryness of the hay, the wet grass and the smooth vegetables, just to name a few. Farms offer a wide variety of contrasting tactile experiences for children. As they roam and touch things, let them enjoy all the information that they are absorbing. Carry antibacterial soap if it makes you feel more comfortable but their little minds are processing information at alarming rates. Ask them to describe what they feel as well as identify words of different textures (smooth, dry, wet, silky, furry). Imagine all the smells that will bombard their noses (or if that is an unpleasant thought don’t

imagine all the smells of the animals). As you come across an unusual smell, identify it and where it is coming from. It is not just the smell of the animals, but the grass, the feed, the flowers, the fruit and vegetables you are picking along with the fresh air. Increases Their Appreciation of Nature It is surprising how many children don’t have a full understanding of where our food comes from! By visiting a farm they can see firsthand where and how they get their favourite foods. Taking children to the farm exposes to them to the understanding that plants are grown and meat comes from animals. Based on their age, maturity and emotional sensitivity, you can introduce different concepts during your visit. For young toddlers, you may just identify animals and food. For older children, you may want to discuss scientific concepts. Promotes Healthy Living Get outside and play! Farms are educational playgrounds for young minds. Being active is not only fun, it also promotes a healthy lifestyle. Maize mazes will get your kids walking (and running) while hay stacks gets them climbing. Enhances Problem Solving Skills At maize mazes, children will not only get plenty of physical activity (some of them take hours to complete) but they will also engage their brain in problem solving skills. Some mazes have trivia questions at each stop which also adds to the excitement and learning. It may be hard, but let your kids decide which way to go. They can be strategic by following the map or just use a trialand-error method. Either way, they are boosting their cognitive development! Boosts Motor Skills Fine motor skills are constantly being developed when you pick your own fruits and vegetables. Our favourite season is early June for strawberries. Those little fingers love to pick fruits and vegetables especially when they can taste the fruits of their labour. As well, when children have the opportunity to feed animals at the petting zoo that is an opportunity for them to improve fine motor skills as well. The seeds to feed the goats and sheep are tiny and so they need to manipulate their hands so that they don’t drop the food. Introduction to Scientific Concepts Farms offer so many opportunities for kids to learn about science. Kids are introduced to botany (the study of plants), agriculture and horticulture (the cultivation of various fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and more). There is so much

20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

science involved in planting and growing fruits and vegetables. Often tractor rides with a tour guide helps families understand all the steps involved in making produce. Animal science is also introduced at farms as kids learn what animals thrive on a farm as well as what they eat and how they interact. Exploration and Discovery Pick your own farms will have the children motivated to pick their own food which also gets them eating a wider variety of fruits and vegetables. Visiting different farms will introduce your children to different types of produce. Whatever you do, fingers crossed we get some nice weather!

Exciting Trends in Health and Wellness for 2019

Plant-based foods, wearable tech, MCT oils, CBD products… Trends in health and wellness over the past year have brought us an increased focus on healthy fats like ghee and coconut oil and an explosion in plant based food options and CBD oils. The future looks just as bright for 2019, with trends that show an increasing focus on full-body wellness and holistic health. Here are some trends we’re super excited to see in the health and wellness this year.

While past science on intermittent fasting has largely centered on the male experience, women are exploring the ways in which intermittent fasting can be targeted specifically to women’s health. Expect even more developments on the ways in which this protocol can be adapted for women’s bodies in 2019.

Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms

E

veryone agrees that the kitchen is the heart of any home and that you can’t beat a relaxing long soak in a luxurious bath to unwind at the end of a hard and tiring working day. Nobody knows that better than Stephen and Sarah Devonport who turned a longterm dream into a reality when they set up their own Devonports kitchen and bathroom design and installation business in Deeping St James. “It all began over 14 years ago with a desire to provide people with beautiful bathrooms and kitchens married up with expert design, advice and customer service,” said Sarah. They worked out of a home office and van in the early days of the business but were so driven with the dream of one day having their own showroom, that it was only a matter of time before the couple realised their ambition.

We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We enjoyed many years of continued growth and success and our dream finally became a reality in 2009 when Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms was born,” said Sarah. “Our initial showroom started out at 45 Bridge Street, Deeping St James and we now occupy the neighbouring two units which has allowed us to expand our existing showroom with further kitchen and bathroom displays.” The Devonports’ kitchens, along with its fitted bathroom furniture, are manufactured in Birmingham by Mereway Limited, which has more than 30 years of continued growth and success. They have three ranges within their kitchen portfolio and expanding into the showroom next door has given the Devonports the opportunity to display even more options. The new kitchen settings have been specifically designed to showcase different door styles and colours and different styles

of worktop. “We have included different ideas for islands that incorporate seating at breakfast bar level height and table height to give numerous options and ideas when planning a kitchen,” said Sarah. “Our existing showroom houses even more kitchen settings with laminate, Granite, Quartz and Corian worktops, all in an array of colours and shapes to show the beauty that can be created from all materials. “Just a change of worktop in your kitchen can often breathe new life and vitality into a room that perhaps felt tired before.” “At Devonports we strive to offer that something extra to the kitchen and bathroom buying experience. “We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves

to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We listen, which we believe is quite possibly the most important part of our communication with you, and we offer practical and knowledge-based advice. “We do not take it lightly that we are welcomed into people’s homes and so we always treat them with the utmost respect, keeping our working environment as clean and tidy as possible at all times.” Devonports has its own team of in-house kitchen and bathroom fitters, and uses the services of the same tilers, electricians and plasterers that it has for many years. “Whether you are looking to change your kitchen worktops, replace your bath with a shower or build a brand new extension to incorporate a new kitchen we can take care of it all,” said Sarah.

Focus on Long Sutton This month we look a little bit of history on the town of Long Sutton.

T

he existence of a settlement in Long Sutton can be traced back to Norman times and possibly to the 9th century, the Friday Market dates back to the early 13th Century, when the town was a prosperous trading centre, by the 14th Century Long Sutton was said to be one of the richest communities in Lincolnshire with it’s main industry being farming of the rich arable land that surrounds this market town, which has always contributed to the prosperity of the area. Long Sutton has many examples of fine Georgian architecture, St Mary’s Church, is famous

for its 13th Century leadcovered timber spire. This is a similar design as Chesterfield’s famous twisted spire but Long Sutton’s spire still stands straight and true. It is now the highest, oldest and best-preserved lead spire in England and possibly Europe: Legend has it that Dick Turpin Highwayman stopped in Long Sutton on his legendry overnight ride from London to York hence the name “Swap Coat Lane” a street leading of Market Street, it is said that King Johns jewels were lost in the wash area somewhere around Long Sutton which at that time was an island or costal settlement in the Wash.

Food Matters Teriyaki Salmon Equipment: • Large rimmed baking sheet • large mixing bowl • small saucepan.

Ingredients for 6 Servings: • 6 salmon fillets • 3 tbsp teriyaki sauce • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce • 3 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp white vinegar • 1 tbsp sesame oil • 1/3 cup light brown sugar • 2 large garlic cloves, minced • 2 tsp grated ginger • Sesame seeds to garnish • Green onion, chopped

Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 200c. 2 Cover the baking sheet with foil. 3 Mix all of the sauce ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved. 4 Add the salmon to the sauce, cover and let marinade for 20 minutes. 5 Gently lift the salmon out of the sauce and place on the sheet. 6 Bake for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is flaky and cooked through. 7 During cooking time, transfer the remaining sauce to a small pan. Bring it to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer until slightly thickened (3-4 minutes). 8 Remove the salmon from the oven, brush with the syrup and then sprinkle with seeds and chopped onion to taste. 30 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Fun facts: Teriyaki sauce is actually more of an American tradition than a Japanese one, according to known history. Whilst Teriyaki is thought to have originated in Japan, the sauce itself can be traced back to Japanese immigrants who settled in Hawaii.

Home & Property

Self Contained How to use pots and planters in your garden to your advantage

Whether you have an acreage or a balcony, using containers in your garden can be a hugely practical, or cosmetic step and can transform your green space in a way that (in my opinion), no other garden ‘accessory’ can. First of all, lets take a look at the practical aspects of using containers. Drainage is the number one priority if you are planting up a container (as opposed to using it for a water feature etc) to prevent your plant roots from drowning. If your chosen pot does not come with holes, you can drill these fairly easily yourself - 3 or 4 holes should be sufficient. Next you may want to fill the base with some shingle mixed with a few bigger stones. Make sure that these are larger than the holes you have created so that they don’t drop through. There is an argument from those who are well-versed on soil science that adding crockery or other drainage material is actually, (excuse the pun), potty. Without going into it too much, it’s all to do with the way soil drains and the natural water table. Water will drain out of the holes in the bottom of your pots whether the additional stones were there or not and it would seem they make little difference to your plants. But it would be amiss of me to not include this age-old step in our container process, simply because I know my grandad would probably turn in his grave if I decided to omit it. Back to our containers. If you have a garden with questionable soil, a pot will give you the opportunity to pick exactly the right type of compost your plant will require, allowing you to ‘mix and match’ around your garden. Without planters, you’re a bit more restricted with what you can successfully plant, and maintain. From a practical point of view, if you are limited on outside space, container gardening is perfect if you want to grow your own produce. Carrots and tomatoes will generally thrive happily in a grow bag or pot that has enough depth for the carrot to plough down, and if you have some canes or similar, tomatoes will wind their way up them and fill the air with that beautiful smell that only a tomato plant can throw off. Siting your plants is important - just because you can move a planter around doesn’t mean that the plant will be happy anywhere. Be mindful of the location required for the chosen plant and bear in mind that most vegetables will be happiest with lots of sunshine and a bit of shelter so that

34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

they don’t get hit with cold winds. You can add a bamboo screen if you’re high up - not only with this give you and your plants some protection but it will look really stylish too. A watering regime is a must for container planting as the plants won’t be able to draw on the moisture available from the ground. In hot weather, give your plants a really thorough water early in the morning or before bed. It’s important to water more than you think to ensure there is sufficient to travel down to the roots. If you want to be a bit quicker with the watering or know you’re going away, pop in an irrigation system to do them all in one go. They are easy to get hold of now from most garden centres and not too tricky to set up. Make sure you plan the layout of your containers carefully so that you have good access for watering and harvesting. I particularly like the flexibility of a container because, as I do inside my house, I like to move things around when the mood takes me. You can pretty much redesign your garden in an afternoon if you so choose. Just make sure that you use a trolley to move anything particularly heavy, or pop your pots onto wheels to trundle them around. We recently visited a café in London where they

had created a complete oasis in a courtyard with stunning ferns and palm trees in giant pots that came up to our waists. The whole effect was tropical, private and yet not one plant was in the ground. If you removed everything what you’d be left with would be a plain patio. Imagine what you could do with a small outside space and some incredible pots! Container planting is also good for those of us who want instant gratification and can’t be patient enough to wait for things to grow. You can get a tree or a bush already planted up from the garden centre. All you have to do is get it in a car and bring it home. Bear in mind that this option is going to be more expensive because you’ve allowed someone else to do the nurturing for you, but the advantage of this, particularly if you’re not very green-fingered, is that you’re likely to purchase something that is good quality and shaped well. All you have to do is get it back and continue tending for it! A Japanese Acer is a good example of a ready-made plant that works well in a container. Expect to pay several hundred pounds for a good specimen but these will add a real focal point for any outside space, particularly one made up of an array of gorgeous pottery.

First D R I V E

New Fiesta ST Ford’s new Fiesta ST is a fearless hot hatch with a 200ps slab of power under the bonnet. It also wears a self-assured body kit and has a flashy interior with a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel. The ST’s seats are very supportive, the view all-around is first-rate, and the eight-inch touchscreen is stressfree to use. The Fiesta ST-3 three-door variant, in the spotlight here, has enough room in the back for two adults – meaning there is a lot of space for younger children. The load area is also bigger compared with the retreating Fiesta model. At 292-litres it will just about swallow a week’s worth of shopping. The £22,895 Fiesta ST-3 gets handsome 18-inch alloy wheels, which are enhanced further with bright red brake callipers. The hatchback also comes loaded up with equipment including, heated leather Recaro seats and a heated steering wheel. There is also a lot of technology shoehorned into the Fiesta ST, which makes the car a pleasure to live with. Tech includes rear parking sensors, keyless entry and automatic air conditioning. As you would anticipate, the

regular Fiesta’s body has been jazzed up for the ST, and it is now 14 per cent stiffer due to some additional bracing on the Ford’s underside. At the rear, there is a new stiff twist-beam torsion bar, and there is a completely new steering rack at the front. These are the most radical parts of their type ever installed into an on-road performance Ford. The steering is also 14 per cent quicker than the withdrawing Fiesta ST200. What’s more, Ford Performance has added Ride Control 1 valving. What is that, you ask? Well, basically, the damping hardens when you are hammering into corners and relaxes off when you are taking it easy cruising along. Torque vectoring springs have also been built-in to give a snappier turn-in; it is all ingenious stuff for a sub-£23,000 hot-hatch. But that is not all when it comes to the Fiesta ST’s technology and engineering. For the first time, a limited slip differential has been

incorporated into the Ford, too; it’s part of the £850 Performance Package which also comprises ‘Performance Shift Lights’ and launch control. The Blue Oval’s fierce little beast fires from 0-62mph in a mere 6.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 144mph. Furthermore, selectable motoring modes permit you to elect relaxed or sportier settings for the steering, exhaust and, of course, the accelerator. The modes - Normal, Sport and Track – each build up weight, noise and response the higher up the selection you go. In Track setting the traction control is turned off and the stability control is switched to ‘wide-slip mode’. Certainly, the fresh Ford Fiesta ST is a talented hot-hatch that represents top value performance for weekend amusement. Only its overly sensitive steering and shuddering suspension might put you off using it as your daily ride.
