Welcome

to the March issue As I sit and write this the sun is blazing through the window and it really does feel like Spring is on the way, albeit there was a frost this morning! This month I have been busy at home building furniture, and redecorating our spare room – if nothing else it has been an opportunity to do a bit of Spring cleaning. I am looking forward this month to celebrating my Auntie’s 50th birthday. Celebrations are a great opportunity for family to get together and catch up from across the country. I’m sure she will thank me for publically mentioning this! Hopefully next month we will be talking sunshine and holidays.

Hello!

In many ways the March issue is all about choices – choosing a new bed, deciding which nursery or pre-school to place your child in, where to hold your wedding and all of the associated decisions which come with planning what might be the biggest day of your life. Luckily we are here with some ideas and solutions to help you. We even give you a few ideas about what you might like to choose as a gift for your Mum on Mother’s Day (don’t forget the date, it’s March 15). Don’t forget that we are delivered to more homes than any other publication – we are letterbox delivered to 23,000 homes every month with additional copies available for pick up at 45 outlets across South Holland so there’s no excuse not to enjoy your favourite read! Enjoy the issue.

Vicky Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY SPALDING when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.

Depot team strike gold Dedicated staff at our waste and recycling depot in Spalding had cause to celebrate after being handed a prestigious award for their excellent health and safety record. The team were recently presented with a Gold Award by Pristine Condition, to recognise the fact that no manual handling accidents happened at the West Marsh Road site during 2014. Barry Bradley, Operations Supervisor at the depot, said: “The entire team are very proud because these awards are not handed out regularly.

“This shows that the team takes health and safety matters very seriously and that the training we give staff on correct

manual handling techniques is highly effective.” Mr Bradley runs an induction programme for all new starters at the depot. The four hour session covers many aspects of health and safety including manual handling techniques and is mandatory for all recycling and refuse staff. Pristine Condition, which trains and monitors staff across the UK, hands out three health and safety awards – gold, silver and bronze.

Grab an oar for Thorpe Hall Hospice Neighbours, community groups, gym buddies and friends are being urged to jump in a boat to raise money for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. But not just any boat – a dragon boat. The hospice in Peterborough is the new official charity for the 2015 Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. And that means there’s chance to take part in a whole day of fun on the water while raising money for an important local cause. This year’s Festival will take place at Peterborough Rowing Club at

Thorpe Meadows – within view of Thorpe Hall itself. By the time of the event on Saturday, June 13 there will be just two weeks of the capital appeal – raising money for the building of the new in patient unit – to go. And that means it’ll be one of the last chances to get involved in this vitally important project. Up to 50 crews will be battling it out over the 200 metre course in qualifiers and finals while, bankside, there will be a host of activities to entertain

teams and spectators between races. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment will be provided. Fancy dress is optional and all money raised on the day will go towards the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal. Regional fundraising manager Lucy Squance says: “This year is a really exciting one for us as we look to open our new in patient unit and introduce new services into the community. We’d love to get as many people involved as possible in this event – what a perfect way for a sports team, group of friends, team of neighbours or workmates to have fun!” For further information please visit www. dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough or call the Thorpe Hall fundraising team on 01733 225999. If dry land is more your thing but you’re still keen to raise money for the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal – how about entering the Tour of Cambridgeshire and seeking sponsorship for completion of the 132km bike race. This event on Sunday, June 7, is the UK’s first Gran Fondo – roads closed to other traffic – and a first for Cambridgeshire too. Entry is now open on the website www.tourofcambridgeshire.com. To find out how you can take part in this unique bike ride while raising money in support of the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal speak to the hospice’s fundraising team on 01733 225999.

Fly tipping cleared from A17 A fly tipping blitz was carried out alongside the A17 this week as part of our Pride in South Holland campaign. Rubbish that had piled up in laybys next to the busy road was cleaned up by our street sweeping team. The crews then headed to Long Sutton to sweep footpaths and alleyways in the area. Over 100 tonnes of rubbish have been cleared in recent weeks as part of our bid to transform derelict and eyesore sites across the district. Last month we announced that a new street sweeping machine had joined our ranks and along with our two permanent vehicles will make sure that as many small towns and villages are cleaned as possible. The sweeping team has already hit the streets of Deeping St Nicholas and Crowland as well as heading along the

A16 to clean up roundabouts and traffic islands. The Pride in South Holland campaign was launched recently to boost eyesore sites in the district and has already made great strides. The former Bull and Monkie pub in Spalding has been cleaned up and other sites, including the Red Cow at Donington are now being targeted. Over the coming weeks the Pride in South Holland campaign will see local areas spruced up with a range of actions to ensure the district stays clean. The campaign will also include: Additional cleaning of town centres Community payback service carrying out improvement tasks Re-painting of equipment at play areas New signage and CCTV installed where necessary.

New sport Activity Finder launches in Lincolnshire A brand new sport and physical activity finder has launched in Lincolnshire in an effort to get more people active. The Lincolnshire Sport Activity Finder, which has been developed in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council, will offer the county a one stop shop for anyone looking to find and try sporting activities in their area. The online search tool, which is also a mobile based web app, launched today (Monday, January 19) and Lincolnshire Sport is inviting everyone in the county who runs activity or sport sessions, from Zumba to Parkruns to Nordic Walking, to get their activities uploaded on the Finder. As well as providing the public with free signposting services, the Lincolnshire Sport Activity Finder will give

clubs, organisations, coaches, groups, facilities and instructors the chance to promote their open days, summers camps and activity sessions for free. The Activity Finder can be found online at www. lincolnshiresport.com/activityfinder. Amy Story, Physical Activity Project Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, said: “We are extremely excited to launch the new Lincolnshire Sport Activity Finder. Our aim as an organisation is to get more people more active, more often and this Finder will allow people in the county to search for sport and physical activity that suits them, at the touch of a button.” “It takes two minutes to register so I would encourage everyone who is looking for an easy way to promote their activity sessions, or alternately looking to get fit, to sign up for the free search tool.” If you’d like more information about the Lincolnshire Sport Activity Finder or have any questions about registration, contact Amy Story at Lincolnshire Sport on 01522 585 580. Local Choir cheque presentation On Sunday December 21, the day after a Winter Wonderland wedding in a marquee in West Deeping A Handful of Harmonies ladies choir moved in with a selection of local musical talent and staged ‘Music at the Manor’. Music Director Andrew Clingo managed the committee who had pulled out all the stops to arrange sponsorship for the programme, raffle, refreshments as well as the performers and to sell tickets.

The wedding was the daughter of one of the members who kindly offered the use of the exquisitely decorated marquee for the use by the choir before it was dismantled on the Monday. So a venue with ‘snow’ covered Christmas trees, candlelit and white flowers entertained 350 guests with a variety of seasonal music and raised £9,287 for Thorpe Hall Hospice.

New defibrillator installed in Moulton Seas Life-saving equipment has been set up in Moulton Seas End thanks to three South Holland councillors and a local fund raiser. Cllrs Anthony Casson, Rodney Grocock and Andrew Woolf used their ward budgets to install a Defibrillator at the village hall. They were aided by local resident Vera Angelo who raised funds by baking and selling cakes. Cllr Casson said: “The device could help to save a life, it is vitally important that these facilities are available in the district.” Cllr Grocock said: “We thought that this would be a worthwhile way of using our ward budgets and would like to thank Vera for the part she played.” Cllr Woolf added: “Hopefully it will never be used but it will certainly provide peace of mind.” The Defibrillator can help resuscitate people who have suffered sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). This occurs when the electrical rhythm that controls the heart is replaced by a chaotic disorganised rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. A Defibrillator works by emitting a high energy electric shock which restores the heart’s natural rhythm. Many SCA victims can be saved if people nearby recognise what has happened, call the ambulance service quickly, perform basic chest compressions and use a Defibrillator.

Spalding Air Cadets get banner cash from Bakkavor The enthusiastic cadets of 1406 Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) were surprised to receive a cheque for £700 from Bakkavor representative Terry Moore to purchase a new Squadron Banner. The old Squadron Banner has seen over 20 years of service and represented the squadron at many events but has started to show wear and tear, so desperately needed to be replaced; the gift from Bakkavor was a big help towards buying the replacement needed.

England ace opens curtain shop Bill Beaumont, the former England rugby captain, came to Spalding on the 22nd January to re-open the new look Classic Curtains. Bill, who captained England 21 times during his career, was on hand to cut the ribbon on the store that was taken over by Spalding couple Mark Slater and Lisa Woodcock in early December, but have waited until now to officially open while they completely refurbish the shop. Bill, who took over his family textile business back in 1988 after an injury ended his rugby career, said: “To be invited to be part in the opening is a great pleasure and I’m delighted to be involved. The shop has undergone an amazing change in such a short space of time and I wish both Lisa and Mark the very best of luck for the future.” Classic Curtains are the only supplier of the Bill Beaumont range in South Holland. “We believe that partnerships work

IN SOUTH HOLLAND and across Lincolnshire we take Community Safety very seriously and at this time of year we review our priorities so that we can direct our ever decreasing financial resources to where it matters most. The East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership ( our local partnership), which includes the District Councils, Police, Fire & Rescue, Probation and Health Services, undertakes an annual survey of the public to get your views on what our priorities should be. East Lincolnshire covers South Holland, Boston and East Lindsey. The current priorities are Anti-Social Behaviour, Violent Crime, which includes Domestic Abuse, Community Cohesion, Alcohol Misuse and Shop Thefts. These priorities will now be reviewed in the light of this survey. 961 people completed the survey which was broadly split between male and female respondents, with many in the 16 – 24 age range, making the outcomes from the survey particularly interesting and maybe surprising. “Rubbish and litter lying around” was identified as the top Anti-Social Behaviour issue, something that South Holland District Council has been pro-active in tackling over the past year, with some very highly publicised campaigns in the local press. “People being drunk or rowdy in public places” was the second biggest issue for the respondents. However it was clear from respondents

that most thought that Anti- Social Behaviour was on the decrease, but around a quarter are worried about being a victim of ASB. The Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership, which covers all the District Councils in Lincolnshire, has recently agreed its’ priorities for the next year which are Substance Misuse, Anti-Social Behaviour, Domestic Abuse, Reducing Reoffending, Sexual Violence and Organised Crime. Key to all this is information sharing between all the key partners and agencies to ensure maximum effect. Aligned to all the above is the introduction of a new CCTV system in South Holland, which is being installed as we speak, which will be a greatly improved system from the existing one. The new system will be professionally monitored 24/7, is more flexible and can hone in on the smallest of detail. It will also link to the current Shopwatch system in Spalding and a new one recently launched in Holbeach. The new system will allow direct links between the operators monitoring the system and the Police on the ground, allowing for a quicker and more targeted response to serious incidents, making South Holland a safer place to be. The full report containing the community survey results can be found at www.sholland.gov.uk

Advice

Accidents at work ❱ BY LISA BARWELL

Health and safety at work - the law By law, your employers have to protect your health, safety and welfare at work. They have to make sure the workplace is safe and without risk to health. As part of this duty, employers must: • keep dust, fumes and noise under control • make sure that plant and machinery are safe and regularly maintained, and that the systems used in the workplace are safe • provide protective clothing where necessary • report certain diseases and injuries to the relevant authority • provide adequate first aid equipment and facilities • take precautions against fire and provide adequate means of escape and means of fighting fire • assess the risks that might be involved in work practices such as using a computer. The work practices must be changed to prevent injuries. You must cooperate with your employers to make the workplace safe. You must also take reasonable care of your own health and safety at work and that of anyone you work with. If you think that conditions at your workplace are unsafe, talk to your trade union if you have one. You can also contact the Health and Safety Executive through its website at www.hse.gov.uk. If you believe that there is a serious and immediate danger for you at work, you have the right to protect yourself. This could mean leaving work until the immediate danger is fixed.

Accident Book. If they don’t do this or if there isn’t an Accident Book, write down brief details of the accident and send it to your boss, keeping a copy. If you can’t report the accident because you are too ill, try to get someone else to do this. If you’ve had an accident, you should see a doctor even if your injury doesn’t seem too serious. This is so the doctor can record the medical details of your accident. This will be useful later on if you want to claim compensation from your boss or if you need to claim benefits. You can find out more about industrial injuries benefits from the GOV.UK website at: www.gov.uk. www.adviceguide.org.uk

Work- related deaths A work-related death is one that happens because of some kind of work-related activity. A work-related death could lead to an individual within a company or organisation being prosecuted for manslaughter. A company or organisation can also be

prosecuted for corporate manslaughter (corporate homicide in Scotland) if a death at work is the result of serious management failures.

Money issues If you need time off because of your injury, you should be getting Statutory Sick Pay. You might get more pay if this is in your contract of employment. Depending on the seriousness of the injury, you might also be able to claim benefits to boost your income when you are off work and even when you go back to work. For example, you might get Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. Also, you might be able to claim compensation from your employer. This could be complicated and take a long time. It’s best if you get legal advice from a solicitor about claiming compensation. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau (see below) will help you find a solicitor who is specialised in these cases or your union might help if you are a member of one. If you want to make a claim, it must be started within three years of the accident.

If you have an accident at work If you have an accident at work, you need to report it to your employers as soon as possible. Make sure they record it in the

New College Stamford Three students from Uppingham Community College visited the brand new Animal Studies Unit at New College Stamford with an interesting gift… logs! The students have been busy coppicing trees in the nearby woods as part of the work they are doing to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh Award alongside the John Muir Award, activities which have been able to allow the students to work towards both highly commendable accolades. The task has been no mean feat, as the College currently has over 70 species of animals on site including monkeys, meerkats, snakes and parrots

that all require natural housing for their homely habitats. As a reward for their hard work the students, along with teacher Debbie Thomas, were invited to meet some of the animals enjoying the fruits of their

Weston Hills CofE Primary School Following our Christmas break, children and staff have come back to school much healthier for the start of the year! Year 5/6 children took part in a Football Competition organised through Agilitas. Children did really well and had a fantastic day competing against other local primary schools, despite the cold weather! Our local MP John Hayes came into school in January to meet Year 5/6 children and our new head teacher, Mrs. Fitzgerald. He always has interesting stories to relate to the children about his time in Parliament. The School Nursing Team will be coming into school this term as part of the National Child Measurement Programme for children in Reception and Year 6. Year 5 and 6 children have had a day with Collingwood Learning concerning Healthy Relationships. They were all involved in activities throughout the day, and the Year 6 children

performed to parents at the end of the day – a very positive experience for all concerned. Children are looking forward to our Whole School Production which is taking place just before we break up for half term. They are all busy learning their lines and songs for our adaptation of “Wind in the Willows”. Year 5/6 children will be taking part in a Netball Tournament at Spalding High School, and at the end of March there is a U11’s Volleyball Tournament. There is a Dance Showcase for KS2 children at the South Holland Centre which children have been practising for. PTA Discos will be taking place at the end of March. We are very grateful for their continued support and are looking forward to refurbishing our library area with their assistance. Our extra-curricular activities this term include a Taiko, Netball, Change4Life Club, Cricket, Sewing, Stories & Rhymes, Reading, Parachute, Homework & Choir.

Spalding Grammar School Two of our Year 13 students, Luke Cowdell and Alex Dormor have both been offered places to study Law at Cambridge. Another Year 13 student, Luke Pallister, has also been awarded two scholarships to study at Birmingham Conservatoire. He was offered a place in the middle of his audition which is virtually unheard of and it is also very rare to come away with not just one but two scholarships. In the next few weeks there will be Caribbean themed ball to raise money for the annual cricket tour to Barbados. 14 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

labour. The favourites were of course the meerkats who were eager to meet the trio. Not only were the students able to fulfil the requirements of their Award, but they were able to see the benefits their contribution has made in real-life environments. Just another example of the excellent relationships New College Stamford has with local schools and communities. New College Stamford offer a range of courses from Introductory to Degree level in animal studies. If you love animals and would like more information about the colleges brand new Animal Studies Unit, find out more at our next open evening on Thursday 26th February, visit www.stamford.ac.uk or call us on 01780 484311, we will be happy to help.

St John the Baptist Primary School Year 2 children had a visit from ‘Samuel Pepys’ earlier this month to start off their project on the Great Fire of London! Children heard all about his life and were able to ask lots of questions! Year one brought their teddies to school for teddy day! They learnt about the history of teddies and how they got their names. Then the children took their teddies shopping to the toy shop in their maths lesson! Some of our Year 5 and 6 children attended a Spalding Schools Football Tournament. Despite it being a very cold day they played really well. Our year 5 team came 3rd in their group and year 6 got through to the quarter finals. Well done everyone! The Reception classes have been having a very busy time with lots of exciting visitors as they work on their Transport topic. They have had visits from both a tractor and a fire engine and been lucky enough to have the chance to have a really close look and even to sit inside! They have also had a visit from Mrs. Atkins our Lollipop Lady and learned all about how to cross roads safely.

A sixth form scientist at Wisbech Grammar School has won an offer of a place at the University of Cambridge. Andrew Turner (17), who lives in Wisbech, has received a conditional offer to read natural sciences at Sidney Sussex College – which ranks fourth highest amongst the university’s colleges in Nobel Prizes won by alumni – and he will need to achieve the required grades in his A Level examinations in chemistry, physics, mathematics and further mathematics in the summer to secure the place. Outside the classroom Andrew has acted as the financial director for the school’s Young Enterprise company, Phoenix, which won the ‘Triumph over adversity’ prize at the Peterborough district area final. He has also been further afield, completing an assessed gold expedition to the Lake District as he works towards the highest honour of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Last summer he joined the school’s three-week expedition to Ecuador, spending six days building a bridge in the rain forest and following in the footsteps of the naturalist, Charles Darwin, during a visit to Galapagos. He said: “I have wanted to go to Cambridge for years and I was delighted to hear about the offer.”

It has been an exciting start to the spring term for the children at Ayscoughfee Hall School. The Reception class enjoyed their visit from Riverside Vets who brought Charlie, a Hungarian Vizsla, and Norman the Guinea Pig. The children have their own Role play vets surgery in the classroom and the visit helped them learn how poorly animals are looked after. Continuing on the theme of learning about and looking after the animal world, Year 1 had a visit from the Pet Refuge who brought their European Eagle Owl, “Thor”, a Barn Owl and a Scops Owl to show the children. To help their learning about the wider world, Starlincs visited the school with their mobile planetarium and the Year 1 and Year 5 children were fascinated to learn more about the solar system as part of their project work. Year 3 enhanced their historical knowledge with a Roman Day which provided a fantastic opportunity to experience life as a Roman. They dressed for the occasion and learnt about the lives of soldiers and gladiators and the weapons used in Ancient Rome. They designed and created their own shields and even went into battle against ferocious Celts. The Year 6 children visited Spalding’s Gentlemen Society. They were very interested in the extensive collection of artefacts from all over the world. All of the children were amazed by the collection of books, many dating back hundreds of years. The Year 6 children also toured the Catholic Church as part of their programme of visits to local places of worship for their RE curriculum work. It has also been a very busy time on the sports field, with the various teams competing well in a wide variety of sports. The hockey team played in the Spalding Schools Quicksticks Hockey tournament and finished runners up out of 12 schools. The netball teams won all 4 of their matches on their visit to Copthill School. In the Spalding Schools Football tournament, the team finished third out of 12 schools, losing a tight semi-final after being unbeaten in their 5 group games. To add to the wide variety of sports that children can experience in their extra-curricular programme, the school have introduced a fencing club for the first time this term which is proving very popular.

Focus on Boston

Boston College Celebrates 50 Years of Success Boston College are currently celebrating 50 years of growth and success, since opening in September 1964, and having recently achieved an Ofsted grading as a ‘Good’ college, it continues it’s journey to become an outstanding provider of Further Education

B

oston College accepted its first students on Monday 7th September 1964, with its official opening held in 1965, under the leadership of Alan Moon as principal and offering just 19 courses which were paid for in cash. In its first year, the college was attended by 150 full time students, with a total of 24 teaching staff. College Principal, Amanda Mosek, said “I am very proud to be the principal of Boston College at the time when we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. Reading the curriculum offered years ago is a fascinating lesson in social history. Having the opportunity to talk to people who studied here in those early days makes me realise that even then, we were making a huge difference to people’s lives; something that we continue to do today.” Today, the college caters for over 7000 local and international students, offering more than 250 courses, and has over 450 members of staff. In 1964, A-levels were the main provision, Rowley Road was the main entrance and the site ended where the accommodation begins today, meaning the college has more than doubled in size. A-levels are still at the forefront of provision today, with 2014 seeing an impressive 100% pass rate. 1989 marked the 25th anniversary, and was an exciting era. The college has always been at the forefront of offering a diverse range of course and career options, and in the eighties BTEC vocational courses were introduced and Apprenticeships took off. This provided opportunities for learners wanting to study skills based courses, and progress into careers such as Motor Vehicle, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Construction, Carpentry, Joinery and Plumbing,

18 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

to name just a few. These provisions enticed even more students to the college as there were now more than 70 courses to choose from. As a direct result of this, numbers increased to 750 full time students. Word spread of the success of students at the college, leading to an increase in enrolment. Excellent links with employers and teams of industry expert staff continue to make Boston College a leading provider of Apprenticeships In 2014, the college supported over 400 learners to successfully achieve apprenticeship programmes. In 1989, the college added the provision of degree level courses, meaning that students could continue with their studies into Higher Education locally. Today, the Boston College University Centre (BCUC) is the dedicated venue for the study of Higher Education, with 150 learners and 20 specialist lecturers qualified to Masters Level. In 2014 the BCUC was rated in the top 3 for student satisfaction out of 267 colleges and universities. Part time courses have always been a fixture at Boston College, encouraging adults to return to education and learn a new skill. Bite-size was launched as a brand in its own right in 2000 and is a brilliant opportunity for adults giving them a way back into learning. The press once printed, “The College prides itself on the strength of care and support it provides for its students and on the excellence of the examination results.”This is something that the college continue to work by today, with a large Learner Services team offering a range of support services to ensure that students get the best advice and guidance throughout college. Boston College provides an Enterprise Zone for the development of enterprise and to build

an entrepreneurial culture amongst learners. It is a space where learners and employers can come together so that students learn about the world of work and develop skills to make them more employable. Amanda Mosek said, “It truly is a 21st century learning space and a unique development for the College, making it stand out as an excellent choice for young people.” Boston College have their own commercial entity, ‘Lime’ restaurant and ‘Style Academy’ Hair & Beauty salon. Both businesses offer outstanding services at very reasonable costs. Catering and Hair & Beauty students run all aspects of each business, giving them the opportunity to train and gain experience working in commercial businesses, giving them a true insight into industry whilst being supported by highly experienced and professional staff. Both the facilities and the professionalism of the staff mean that students leave college confident and prepared to go on to deliver their own high standards in industry. Amanda Mosek added, “The College has grown, adapted and become stronger over the last fifty years and I know, with absolute certainty, that we will still be here playing a key role in the local community in another 50 years’ time.” The college is celebrating by holding an exhibition of photos, equipment and case studies from across the different eras and having an event in the summer. If you would like to share your experiences of Boston College or would like any more information on this, please contact the college as they would love to hear from you. Keep an eye out on Facebook and Twitter, alternatively visit www.boston.ac.uk/ info@ boston.ac.uk or contact us on 01205 313218.

Wedding Trends for 2015 What’s hot and what’s not for this year’s weddings ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

W

edding trends, from decorations to food, from honeymoons to the bride’s dress are always changing. To see how drastically, take a look at a wedding photo from 5, 10, 20 years ago and changes are quickly apparent, particularly when it comes to fashions! With online resources a popular tool for today’s brides new trends can be quickly adopted in the early planning stages. So if you have been invited to 2015’s Wedding of the Year or are beginning to plan your own big day what can you expect to see?

Engagement Rings Yellow gold was the staple for rings and then this changed to white gold and platinum. It would seem that these are now having to make way for rose gold and the single diamond is being changed to eternity style rows of smaller diamonds. There is also the emergence of engagement rings which do not feature a diamond as the main stone, with sapphires being popular, in no small part down to Kate Middleton!

Dresses Wedding dresses are as beautiful and as intricate as ever with a real trend back towards traditional gowns. Lace is big as are tributes to 1930s dresses. In a move away from tradition though bridal gowns in pastel colours are becoming increasing popular with powder blue and even mint green appearing. Capes are also gaining popularity with brides from just below the shoulder right the way to floor length.

Colour Schemes Blue is still the first choice for many, with deep royal blue still leading the way. Purples and pinks will also feature heavily this year with a return for browns and ivory being predicted. Bridesmaid dresses are often matched to the theme and this year you can pretty much take your pick! Colour is big again, out with the pastels (unless it’s for the wedding dress itself!) and in with the bold.

Flowers Tradition holds firm when it comes to flowers. Roses continue to dominate with roses still featuring heavily as well as peonies, ranunculus and hydrangeas. Florists are also finding that ‘greenery’ is also being increasingly requested.

Food

“...the tide has turned and trends are heading back towards a traditional tiered cake with textured icing.”

Weddings can vary greatly when it comes to food as the bride and groom will often take their own personal tastes as their starting point. Inviting your guests to enjoy a buffet for the wedding breakfast is set to become the new norm. Rather than being served at your table you can grab a plate and dish up exactly what you would like. The thinking behind this is that it makes the meal a more sociable occasion, allowing you to chat to fellow guests while you are deciding what you would like to eat. There is also a growing preference for providing late night food for guests attending the evening reception with midnight snacks such as bacon butties and mini foods such as tiny burgers and hot dogs. While we’re on the subject of miniatures, mini drinks – almost like tasters – are becoming popular with mini beers taking the crown.

22 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Finally, when it comes to food the most important piece has to be the wedding cake. Individual cakes have been the first choice for brides for over a decade now but the tide has turned and trends are heading back towards a traditional tiered cake with textured icing. Alongside the cake dessert stands are still going strong.

Entertainment Wedding music is going retro with 70s bands finding themselves booked up all through the summer. Live music followed by a disco will often feature at the evening reception. The most popular song for the married couple’s first dance in the UK is Everything by Michael Buble followed by Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together and At Last by Etta James. Having ‘wandering’ entertainment is also becoming normal with magicians, caricaturists and silhouette artists often found mingling with the guests during any quiet periods.

The Honeymoon Couples who marry this year are more likely to reject a fortnight on a beach somewhere exotic and instead split their time between two destinations or even heading off on an adventure holiday, trekking to Machu Picchu or driving (or even riding!) the famous Route 66 in America. There is also a trend for “mini-moons” for couples who have trouble taking a long time off work. These take the form of city breaks and long weekends at destinations that are only a couple of hours’ flight away.

National Bed Month

National Bed Month With March being National Bed Month, Lisa Artis from the Sleep Council talks about keeping warm in bed!

“Put on a pair of soft bed socks. The extra layer under the covers can help improve circulation in your extremities, which can help you fall asleep more quickly.”

I

❱ BY LISA ARTIS

don’t know about you but gosh it’s chilly at the moment and especially at night. It’s these kinds of days that make you want to go to bed earlier and stay in bed longer – however this only works if your bed is warm and cosy! According to one survey around half (49%) the population suffers sleepless nights because of the cold. With temperatures usually at their lowest in the early hours, many people find that they are sometimes too cold and uncomfortable to be able to get a good night’s sleep. So we’ve come up with some great tips to keep you warm in bed: l Wear night clothes such as pyjamas or a large T-shirt to keep you warm. Natural fibres such as wool, cotton or silk will keep you warmer than synthetic materials. l Put on a pair of soft bed socks. The extra layer under the covers can help improve circulation in your extremities, which can help you fall asleep more quickly. l Have a warm (not hot!) bath just before you go to bed. This will warm you up and will also help to make you sleepy. l Have a warming milky drink. l Try to take some exercise, not too close to bedtime, which will get the circulation going and help to keep

24 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

the body warm. It is also worth looking at the bedroom, the bed and the bedding all of which play a part in keeping you insulated in the cold night air. l Keep the bedroom warm, but not too hot, and free from draughts. Ideal room temperature is 16-18 degrees Celsius. l Avoid a saggy bed. It may be nice to cuddle up for warmth but it can be very uncomfortable and clammy when you are thrown together by a bed that isn’t giving you the correct support. l Look for a mattress which has a thicker side for use during the winter. A soft sleeping surface is a better insulator than a flat one. Use a fleecy underblanket to retain the heat. l Choose a duvet with a high tog rating or use several layers of bedding rather than one single layer. Layers will trap warm air and are easily removed if you get too hot. l A hot water bottle is an ideal way to keep warm once in bed. Make sure it has a cover on it to avoid scalding and also so that it won’t feel cold in the middle of the night. l Electric blankets or duvets are ideal. Underblankets will warm the bed up before you retire for the night, while overblankets maintain a constant temperature throughout the night.

Focus on Boston

The Boston Barrier Scheme A huge grant from the government for a flood defence spells good news for the people of Boston

T

he devastation caused by the flooding in Boston back in 2013 is still fresh in everyone’s minds with thousands of homes and businesses affected. In some cases people are still picking up the pieces a year on so for those who have just rebuilt their lives or had a near-miss last time news of the grant is very welcome indeed. Across Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire £2.3b is being spent on flood defences, with Boston being at the heart of that investment to ensure that the Boston Barrier is completed in the shortest possible time. Lincolnshire County Council is also contributing £11m which will aim to bring money into the area via tourism. Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury said: “Floods can devastate our communities, which is why I have fast-tracked the delivery of the £90 million Boston barrier, as well as nearly £150 million across the region to protect thousands of homes and businesses.” The £90.2million multi-functional Boston Barrier will provide protection against a tidal flood with a 1 in 300 (0.33%) annual chance for the next 70 years. It will also provide safe inland navigation during the boating season (April to October) by retaining daytime low tide water levels upstream of the barrier. The barrier will not retain water levels during a tidal or fluvial flood event. By retaining water levels through the town, the Boston Barrier will complete the second stage of the Fens Waterways Link, providing safe and reliable access to the South Forty Foot Drain and resulting in wider economic opportunities to deprived areas of Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire County Council has already contributed £11million in partnership funding for water level management. The Boston Barrier partnership is between the Environment Agency, Lincolnshire County Council, Boston Borough Council and Black Sluice Internal Drainage Board, who are all working together to reduce the risk of tidal flooding to the whole Borough of Boston. The Boston Combined Strategy was published in March, 2008, after extensive consultation. The strategy aims to “manage the risk from tidal flooding in Boston whilst enabling opportunities for regenerating the town’s waterways”. A major element is to construct a tidal barrier across the Haven. The Boston Combined Strategy sets out that the tidal barrier should have two main functions: to reduce the risk of a tidal surge flooding the town and to control water levels in the Haven to provide a more attractive waterfront making navigation on Boston’s waterways safer and more predictable. This will achieve a major phase of the Fens Waterways Link, with more opportunities for recreation and tourism. 26 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“...we cannot protect against the most extreme tidal surges, but the barrier will protect Boston in most cases and give the town one of the best standards of protection against tidal flooding in the country.” When the barrier is built and the banks immediately downstream are raised, Boston will be protected from a tidal surge with a 0.3% annual probability (or 1 in 300 chance of happening in any one year). Unfortunately, we cannot protect against the most extreme tidal surges, but the barrier will protect Boston in most cases and give the town one of the best standards of protection against tidal flooding in the country. Before the business case was developed, the Environment Agency engaged with key partners and the local community on the concept of a multifunctional tidal barrier in Boston and how this would reduce flood risk and help to regenerate the town. There were a series of drop-in sessions in 2011 to provide an opportunity for local residents and businesses to comment on the location of barrier. There was good attendance from local residents living near the proposed barrier location. If you have any questions about the Boston Barrier or if you’d like to receive updates about the project then please contact Boston.Barrier@environment-agency. gov.uk.

Come Home with Shared Ownership Owning your own home is still one of the most commonly held aspirations in the UK, but it’s getting harder to get a foot on the property ladder. First time buyers and those who have found themselves having to start again are now looking for other options to help them find the home of their dreams

S

hared Ownership is a great alternative to outright home ownership for those on a lower income who might struggle to save a large deposit. That’s because you buy a partial share of a house and pay a subsidised rent on the rest. Shared ownership does not mean you share your house with someone else! The benefits of shared ownership are that as you are buying a smaller share you usually need a smaller deposit and the combined monthly cost of mortgage

repayment and rent payments is usually less than the market rent for a similar home. The property can be bought in stages, you can increase your ownership in the future by buying further shares, known as staircasing. Boston Mayflower has been providing affordable home ownership in the local area for more than fifteen years. They own and manage over 5,000 homes in Lincolnshire including several shared ownership options here in Boston and the surrounding area. We now have new build properties available in one of Boston’s premier locations.

World Book Day 2015

World Book Day 2015

H

Thursday March 5 is World Book Day and this year it’s bigger than ever

H H H ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

n the UK, World Book day is a charity event held annually to promote reading. First celebrated in 1995, events will be held up and down the country to celebrate the day. Many children go to school dressed as their favourite book characters, schools, libraries and book shops stage story and poetry readings and authors and publishers head out on tour to take their books directly to their readers! Thanks to National Book Tokens and lots of lovely book publishers and booksellers, World Book Day, in partnership with schools all over the country, will be distributing more than 14 million £1 World Book Day book tokens to children (that’s almost

H

HHH

one for every child/young person under 18 in the UK and Ireland). When you get your book token, all you need to do is to take it to your local bookshop and swap it for one of ten (exclusive, new and completely free) £1 World Book Day books! Or, if you’d prefer, you can use your book token to get £1 off any full price book instead! And if you’d rather get an audio book, that’s fine too! So that’s £1 off any book or audio book, it’s your choice, just as long as it would normally cost at least £2.99 (or €3.99 in Ireland). Then all YOU have to do is take your book home and enjoy it. The World Book Day Book Tokens are valid from 2nd March29th March 2015.

Kitchen Makeover

Is it time for a kitchen makeover? Is your kitchen looking tired or the space not working for you? Perhaps it’s time to reassess…

F

or many the kitchen is the heart of the home. As well as being used for food preparation the kitchen can also be a social hub, where friends and family gather. Whatever you use your kitchen for it should be set up so that it works for you and your particular circumstances. Your kitchen can look absolutely beautiful but if it is not functional for you then it is time to rethink. So what options are available to you? One of the biggest problems people face with their kitchens is that their needs and the layout are at odds. If the kitchen is a social hub is there room for a table and chairs or a breakfast bar for mornings and coffees? If you like your appliances are there sufficient sockets? How long since your kitchen was installed? Kitchen design today is so inventive when it comes to space – a modern kitchen design uses every nook and cranny which can be especially handy if space is at a premium! If you want to start from scratch or are thinking about making major changes to your existing kitchen then the best thing to do is to book a home visit from a company which specialises in kitchens. Taking your measurements to a large national chain store leaves you

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN wide open to errors on your part as well as potentially entrusting your kitchen to someone whose main responsibilities don’t actually include kitchen design! By using a specialist you can be assured that you are benefitting from their expertise. Having an appointment at home allows not only for measurements to be taken but also to discuss your options fully – not just styles and finishes but also other ways to stretch your budget whilst not compromising on quality. Some kitchen specialists offer a total kitchen package so as well as units and worktops they also offer tiles, flooring and appliances which means that you will only need to use one company, avoiding any scheduling issues – you don’t want to be in a situation whereby you are waiting for one company to lay your flooring before your kitchen installation can begin. The best kitchen firms are very busy so if you are co-ordinating several workmen make sure that everyone knows where they have to be and when! A kitchen can take on so many forms it is worth taking the time beforehand to decide on a rough idea of your requirements. Where possible see if you can get a drawing of how it will look (a 3D one is even better if they are available) to make sure that what you are seeing in your mind matches up with the reality.

“...making major changes to your existing kitchen then the best thing to do is to book a home visit from a company which specialises in kitchens.”

Health & Beauty

Beautiful eyebrows and lashes Changing the way your eyes look can make a dramatic difference to your appearance

A

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

set of false lashes can open up your eyes and beautifully shaped eyebrows can dramatically frame your eyes. But getting the right shape (both in terms of being the right shape for your face and well executed) can be easier said than done. Eyebrows don’t always behave and getting symmetry is nigh-on impossible – as my beauty therapist says “don’t forget, your eyebrows are sisters not twins!” So if you are unsure on where to start we take a look at the best shapes for your face as well as current trends. The first thing to consider is the shape of your face. Essentially there are five shapes of face – square, round, oval, long and heart shaped. The shape of your face will lend itself towards a particular style of eyebrow. As your eyebrows are such a prominent part of your face, most people prefer to consult the professionals, benefitting from their training and experience. If you shape your eyebrows yourself or would like to start there are some general rules to ensure you avoid any disasters. Irrespective of what shape or style you would like to go for there are some basic rules you can follow. Your eyebrow should begin at the bridge of your nose. As a rule of thumb, if you grab an eyeliner pencil and hold it up to either side of your nose the top of the pencil will be sat on your starting point. Anything further in than this and your brows can start to look very odd.

The shape of your face will lend itself towards a particular style of eyebrow.

Watch your arch! How much of an arch you can get on a brow is, pretty much, down to genetics but the point at which you begin the arch you can control. Looking at your brows, the arch should appear two thirds of the way towards the outside edge. Any closer to your nose and you will be putting the arch in the centre. If having rainbow shapes above your eyes aren’t your thing then stick to the two thirds rule. The ends of your eyebrows should not dip below the level of the beginning of your eyebrow. At worst they could sit a little above but never below as it will give you an odd finish. Once you have perfectly shaped brows, use an eyebrow pencil to fill in any gaps you may see, ensuring that you always sweep the pencil in the same direction as the brow. When buying your eyebrow pencil make sure you spend a bit of time making sure that the colour of the pencil matches the colour of your eyebrows as closely as possible. A colour which is too light or too dark can have disastrous consequences!! Now you have your eyebrows sorted you can turn your attention to your lashes. Again, many people choose to have false eyelashes put on by a beautician but if you have the patience to apply them yourself then here are our top tips. Start by measuring the lash to make sure it fits – there’s nothing worse than being at the sticking-on stage only to realise the false lash is too long! If the lash is too long then cut it down to size, nail scissors are handy for this type of job. Apply the eyelash adhesive to the edge of the lash and wait until it goes tacky before you try to attach it to your own lashes. When you come to stick the lashes on try to get as close to the base of your own lashes as possible but without it touching the eyelid itself. You will have a short time before the glue dries to make any nudges! Once stuck, if you do notice a gap then use your eyeliner or black eyeshadow to draw a line between the two to join them up.

“The ends of your eyebrows should not dip below the level of the beginning of your eyebrow.”

Choosing a nursery

Making the right choices When choosing a nursery or pre-school how influential can an inspection report be?

I

t’s an important decision. Your child will experience many ‘firsts’ in their lives and the first day at nursery or pre-school is a big one. And not just for them, but also for you as a parent. When drawing up your shortlist of establishments every parent will have different priorities on their lists. When visits take place there may be a carefully considered list of questions that you would like to ask and taking in the ambience of a place and experiencing it for yourself is second to none when getting a real feel for a place. But many articles, websites and forums will recommend you read the Ofsted reports. For many parents it will be the first time they have heard of it (save maybe when you were younger and your school may have had an Ofsted visit). So who are Ofsted, what are their reports and how much importance should be placed on their findings? Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They inspect and regulate services that care for children and young people, and services providing education and skills for learners of all ages. Every week, they carry out hundreds of inspections and regulatory visits throughout England and publish the results online. They help providers that are not yet of good standard to improve, monitor their progress and share with them the best practice they find. Their goal is to achieve excellence in education and skills for learners of all ages, and in the care of children and young people. They report directly to Parliament and are independent and impartial.

They are responsible for: g inspecting maintained schools and academies, some independent schools, and many other educational institutions and programmes outside of higher education g inspecting childcare, adoption and fostering agencies and initial teacher training g publishing reports of their findings so they can be used to improve the overall quality of education and training g regulating a range of early years and children’s social care services, making sure they’re suitable for children and potentially vulnerable young people g reporting to policymakers on the effectiveness of these services

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

When producing a report, Ofsted will assign grades to the quality and standard of Early Years provision across various areas. These range from Grade 1 which is ‘Outstanding’ to Grade 4 which is ‘Inadequate’. Whilst these grades can give a good overview it is perhaps more important to look at the content of the report where the inspectors go into more detail about what the setting does well and the things that require improvement. Some inspections speak to parents and report back on their general feelings towards the setting which you may also find useful. It is important to remember that everyone is looking for something different in a nursery or pre-school and these reports will help you as they highlight the strengths of any particular setting which will allow you to match them to your own expectations. Ofsted reports are best used in conjunction with all of the other plans you have in place – shortlisting, visiting, speaking to other parents so you can get the full picture before you make a decision.

“Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They inspect and regulate services that care for children and young people, and services providing education and skills for learners of all ages.”

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

Hop To It It’s Easter Bunny Time Rabbits are very popular pets that are great with children when handled from an early age. Tame rabbits are docile creatures, with tons of personality. Peter Rabbit’s Mr McGregor didn’t know what he was missing out on Here are some healthy bunny tips! Food and Drink Rabbits need a variety of food. In the wild they eat grass, hay and dark leafy greens, so this is what should be reproduced in your home. Avoid lettuce, as it can cause diahorrea, and carrots should only be given as a treat because of the high sugar content. Some garden plants are poisonous, and must be kept away from Thumper’s run. These include rhubarb, plant bulbs such as daffodils, foxglove, laburnum and oak leaves. On top of grass and hay, a measured amount of extruded rabbit pellets ensure all nutrients are offered. Don’t go overboard no matter how much they like it though, because it can lead to obesity. It goes without saying that fresh water must always be available. Use a hanging drip drinker and change it every day.

Bored bunnies will chew anything! To prevent boredom, bunnies are best kept in pairs, but they also live alongside guinea pigs quite happily. Neutering is essential if you plan to keep mixed sex bunnies or you will overrun within months! Females can be neutered from 4 months of age and males from around 3 months of age.

Health Pet rabbits should be vaccinated and neutered. Vaccinations cover the dreaded myxomatosis, which can spread to captive bunnies. In summer check under your bunny’s tail for maggot infestations which can lead to fly strike – a fatal condition. It’s a good idea to regularly comb your bunny. Not only does this make them easy to handle, but it keeps their coats in good condition and allows you to check for any injuries. Rabbits are prone to tooth problems, but lots of grass and hay will help keep their teeth healthy. Give them at least their own body size in hay each day. Bunnies are a rewarding, family-friendly pet when looked after well. If you are thinking about keeping a pet for your children, then you won’t go wrong with a bunny.

Environment Hutches should be draft and rain proof, and they are best raised to prevent damp seeping in. Ensure that you clean them out regularly, and when it’s cold cover the front to prevent wind chill. The run should be large enough for your rabbit to stretch out and enjoy comfortable living. Move the run around your garden to source fresh grass. If you have an indoor bunny, ensure that its tray is frequently cleaned, and that any wires are boxed in.

New Suzuki Celerio

he Celerio, Suzuki’s all-new global compact City car, which has just gone on sale, is priced at just £7,999 for the highly equipped SZ3 model and £8,999 for the SZ4. Suzuki is well known as the small car experts and the Celerio offers a compact car ease of drive while providing an elevated driving position, interior space that surpasses most conventional small cars, as well a class leading luggage capacity of 254 litres. Standard specification highlights for the Celerio SZ3 includes six airbags, air conditioning, alloy wheels, DAB Radio, CD Tuner, USB, Bluetooth connectivity and remote central locking. The even higher equipped SZ4 model that I had a chance to drive adds polished alloy wheels, rear

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY electric windows, front fog lamps, body coloured door mirrors and chrome front grille. During design, Suzuki aimed for a resolution of the contradictory elements of retaining interior space within a compact body. By going back to basics in development and reviewing the body structure, Suzuki has succeeded in delivering a roomy and comfortable interior within a shell measuring just 3,600mm in length and a width of 1,600mm. The Celerio has a turning circle of just 9.4 metres too, making it one of the most manoeuvrable motors in its class. A height of 1,540mm and a non-slanting roofline allows greater headroom for everyone. The 2,425mm long wheelbase provides a tandem distance of 743mm which gives plenty of space in the cabin for five-up. The car offers low CO2 emissions

of 99g/km and 65.7mpg on the EC combined cycle from its 1.0-litre three cylinder engine. This summer a new engine will be available offering even higher combined fuel economy of 78.4 mpg and CO2 emissions that fall to just 84g/km thanks to the introduction of Suzuki’s new Dualjet engine technology. This technology will also incorporate a stop start facility when stationary. Also available in the summer will be Suzuki’s newly developed Auto Gear Shift (AGS). This system features an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator positioned at the top of the transmission that operates the gearshift and clutch automatically. With AGS, you can enjoy the effortless driving of an automatic, particularly in City traffic, but without any loss in fuel efficiency or increase in CO2 emissions. In addition, a unique feature of the Suzuki AGS is a low speed ‘creep’ facility which allows the car to move in gear without the accelerator being applied, ideal in slow traffic and when parking. It’s worth noting that the Celerio scored only three stars out of a possible five in its Euro NCAP safety test - but that was attributed to the fact that the test car did not have side airbags. That said, I’m pleased to say all Celerios sold in the UK have these fitted.
