to the July issue

Peter’s Notes

Page 9

Summer is FINALLY here! I am sitting in my study writing this, looking into my garden at blazing sunshine after a weekend spent at the coast in glorious weather but how long it will last, who knows? So far it really doesn’t feel like we’ve had much of a summer. Hopefully July through to September will be a different story. I am in the process of packing up my bags for a week in Portugal, it’s a place I have never been to but many friends and family talk about how nice it is. Fingers crossed for good weather, good beaches and some R&R. On the home front we are now at the fun stage of decorating – after moving to a house which needed work earlier in the year it has been fun going around finding accessories and feeling like an interior designer. I just hope it all comes together OK at the end! I will hand over to Vicky to tell you all about what is in this issue. Until next month..

Hawthorn Tree presentation Children at Boston’s Hawthorn Tree Primary School know a thing or two about keeping the place clean and tidy – and they have a £300 cheque to prove it. The youngsters took part in Boston Borough Council’s Big Schools Clean-up project – a spin off from the annual Big Boston Clean-up. They were the winners of a £300 cash prize draw for schools involved in the campaign. Swineshead St Mary’s Primary School won the runners-up prize of a £50 voucher donated by Helping Hands which supplies equipment such as mechanical litter-picking tools. The schools clean-up has become an annual event ahead of the Big Boston Clean-up and this year six schools took part with 300 children litter picking in and around their school grounds. Over the last four years 1,400 children have joined in. Together with this year’s Big Boston Clean-up more than 600 adults and children removed almost six tonnes of rubbish from the streets, verges, public areas and waterways. Jen Moore, Boston Borough Council’s big cleanup organiser, said: “The children are so enthusiastic and really enjoy getting out and litter picking, this encourages them to think about what they do with their litter and I am certain after taking part they will be more likely to dispose of it properly. I would like to thank all the schools who signed up for the Big Schools Clean Up for letting me and my colleagues do a presentation to the children and for allowing them to go out and get involved.”

Memorial appeal’s £500 boost Boston’s First World War Centenary Memorial Appeal has received a £500 boost. Borough and County Councillor Cllr Bob McAuley donated the cash from his Lincolnshire County Council Big Society Fund. Handing the cheque over to representatives of the ex-servicemen’s organisations involved he said: “I felt it important that support was shown for this once-in-a-lifetime event. And I felt it important, 100 years on, that we showed appropriate acknowledgement for the ultimate sacrifice made by so many from the Boston borough area. “It’s right that there is a public commemoration of the centenary of the start of the First World War, as it will be right that, in four years time, we celebrate the centenary of the end of that dreadful conflict.” Schools in the area are also beginning to get behind the appeal for funds for a First World War centenary memorial. First to declare support were Boston Hawthorn Tree Corner Primary School and Wrangle Primary School. Children at Hawthorn Tree are growing poppies and are planning to learn some popular songs of the period for a sponsored First World War singalong. The school is also working with parents to find out more about the war and collate local experiences and family memories. Wrangle Primary School pupils, who are also planning a sponsored event, are learning about the First World War from Wrangle branch of the Royal British Legion. Children at Boston St Nicholas

Church of England Primary School are planning a wear poppy red nonuniform day. Wyberton Primary School is planning an event for its story-telling garden. Boston Grammar School is to make a donation and Boston High School has also pledged support and has a full programme of activities planned related to the First World War. Key Stage 3 pupils’ studies relate to the war and 50 Year 9 girls are to go a battlefields trip. The curriculum will also include literature and poetry from the First World War. The school plans to follow the four-year progress of the war over the next four years and will be posting anniversary events from the conflict on its website from the end of July – www. bostonhighschool.co.uk If your school wants to help fund a borough memorial for Boston’s Memorial Gardens to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War please contact Andrew Malkin at Boston Borough Council – phone 01205 314308 or email him at andrew.malkin@boston.gov.uk Andrew, communications manager at the borough council, said: “It is wonderful news that the first schools have come forward to support the event. The events of 100 years ago impacted across the generations so it is encouraging to hear that today’s younger generations are learning about the sacrifices made. “It is hoped that more schools will follow suit to support the appeal and help make the funding of the memorial a community effort.” VIP representatives from all

schools which donate will be invited to the official memorial unveiling and dedication. Donations for the appeal have recently come in from Staples Chilled Fresh Vegetables of Wrangle, and Mr Peter Udy, of Frampton. Boston Borough Council, Boston and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, Boston Branch of the Royal Air Force Association, Canal Zoners and the Boston Veterans Memorial Plaque Committee are appealing to all to make a contribution, no matter how small, to help commemorate the event in Boston. You can make a donation to the appeal using the council’s online payment facility using a debit or credit card; in person at the Municipal Buildings using a debit or credit card, cheque or cash; or by post using a cheque. Cheques should be made payable to Boston Borough Council and “Boston First World War Memorial Appeal” should be written on the reverse to indicate what the payment is for. All donations will be recorded on a public roll of honour.

Pie awards A borough farm shop is making a name for itself with more awards for its pies. At the recent Melton Mowbray pie competition Pinchins Farm Shop at Algarkirk received a silver for its steak and Stilton and a bronze for its Lincolnshire sausage meat, chicken and leek pie. The latest awards come hot on the heels of success at the BPEX Regional Roadshows 2013/14. Proprietors James and Henny

4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Pinchin and their chef, Michelle Bourne, travelled to Newark to win gold awards for their combination of picnic pie and bacon burgers. Their Lincolnshire sausage, chicken and leek pie, home-cured bacon, Scotch egg, black pudding and farmhouse faggot all took silver awards and they picked up bronzes for their Lincolnshire pork sausage, ploughman’s sausage and traditional pork pie. Of their latest success Henny said:

“Not bad considering there were 823 entries.” At the end of last year they entered the British Sausage competition coming home with silver for their traditional pork sausage, and a whopping regional gold for their ploughman’s sausage - judged out of more than 300 entries. Their farm shop is in Church Lane, off the A16 near Sutterton roundabout, on the opposite side of the road to Algarkirk village, open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday from 11am to 3.30pm.

Trash the Ash Littering the streets continues to be a major concern for borough residents. It’s one of the things which always crops up when views are sought on what Boston Borough Council’s priorities for the future should be. But one area where there is particular concern is smoking litter. Many, especially smokers, still do not consider their carelesslydiscarded cigarette ends to be litter, to the point where it has almost become socially acceptable to throw down a cigarette butt in the street. WRONG! It is litter and anyone caught could face a £75 fine. Piles of cigarette ends look nasty and, thrown down outside business premises, send the wrong kind of message about those pubs, shops and offices. Which is why many are fighting back, educating their customers and signing up to the council’s new Trash the Ash campaign. One of the first to join the campaign was Tiago De Abreu, who runs Samba Brasil bar at the junction of West Street and Bond Street. Tiago has just had a new wall-mounted cigarette bin fitted and said: “I don’t like to see cigarette butts outside my business. I don’t like the thought of children walking past and being encouraged to think about taking up smoking. That’s how I got

started.” Another establishment with a new wall-mounted bin is the Indian Queen and Three Kings pub in Dolphin Lane. Landlord, Aaron Queen, said: “We used to have a sand-filled bucket outside, but it got knocked over and even taken away on a few occasions. It didn’t look nice and because smokers tended to throw their cigarette ends down towards it they sometimes missed. “The new bin is much better. It’s fixed to the wall, so much more secure. The cigarette ends are out of sight and the smell is also contained. It is also much easier and cleaner to empty. We make sure our smoking customers are aware of it. It’s better all round for my business, my customers and people who pass by in Dolphion Lane.” Simone Griffin, of SimInk Tattoo Studio in Wide Bargate, is another whose businesses now has a cigarette bin. She responded quickly by providing the bin when discarded smokers’ litter in the road outside her business was pointed out to her by council officials. Others who have also signed up to the Trash the Ash campaign include Coral betting shops in West Street and Wide Bargate, Paddy Power, also in West Street, where manager Aaron Bradshaw asks

customers to use the bin provided, Costa Coffee in Pescod Square, and Seventh Heaven Café in the Market Place. Becky Shinn, the council’s environmental enforcement officer, said: “The last thing we want to do is issue a fixed penalty notice for a discarded cigarette end. In the past we have issued £75 fixed penalty notices which have been paid when we have received information, especially where cigarette ends have been thrown from cars. But we’d much sooner educate people so they don’t do it in the first place. “It’s great that businesses in the town have shown such an early interest in our Trash the Ash campaign and declared their support for keeping cigarette litter off the streets and disposed of properly. “It’s worth remembering that cigarette ends contain all sorts of toxins which can leach into water sources, poison wildlife and take up to ten years to biodegrade.”

Halo Scanner Presentation Sutterton Veterinary Centre at Sutterton, Boston, Lincolnshire was recently presented with a Halo Scanner by Arnot Wilson, Director of the Dog Union. The Centre won the scanner for their poster display during the national Pet Theft Awareness Week in March run by the Dog Union and VioVet, a leading online pet food and veterinary medicine retailer. Amy Trigg, veterinary nurse said “Having a pet stolen is devastating for the owners and we would hate that to happen to any of our patients so the week gave us an opportunity to

highlight this crime” The Halo scanner is the latest in microchip technology as it not only reads the microchip number but immediately alerts the operator if the pet is notified as missing. Arnot Wilson of Algarkirk and co-founder of Pet Theft Awareness said “We are delighted to present Sutterton Veterinary Centre with a Halo Scanner. Vets play an integral part in pet reunification and it’s great to have another scanner in the Boston area.”

More Solar Panels for Leisure Complex Extra solar panels are to be fitted to the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex in Boston after the first installation proved such a success. The latest project will see an additional 142 panels fitted to the roof of the gym at the Boston Borough Council run complex at a cost of £40,000 and work is due to start within the next month few weeks. Lincoln-based company Freewatt has won the tender to fit the system, which will pay for itself in less than seven years. The 35.5kWp array will generate a Feed in Tariff income of more than £3,000 a year and, with 80% most of the power produced by the panels being used in the building, it will save the complex nearly £3,000 in fuel costs generate a total of around £5,000 a year in income and fuel savings. Over the 20 year lifespan of the system it is estimated it will generate almost £190,000 £106,000 in income and savings and save around 16 tons of CO2 emissions a year. The complex had 200 panels fitted in early 2012 to the main pool hall roof and they have proved such a success the council has decided to expand the system to produce more green energy. The centre boasts a large leisure pool including baby pool and slide, training pool, gym, studios, sauna, steam room, spa pool and relaxation area. Cllr Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “This is further evidence of action by the council to reduce its carbon footprint and save on energy costs by making best use of the latest available technology. By its nature a building such as the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex is going to be fuel hungry. With this second installation of solar panels we are doing what we can to make it run as efficiently as possible.”

Apology In last month’s issue we ran the incorrect advertisement for Boston College which contained Open Evening dates for their Spalding open evening rather than the date for the Boston site. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston The Boston Barrier I have been urging that nothing should derail the much-needed Boston Barrier scheme, so it is very encouraging to hear that, at the first test of the scheme by the Government’s Treasury department it has not only received support but a recommendation that it should proceed as quickly and as smoothly as possible. This is great news for Boston, and especially great news for people who live in the flood zone and have already had their fill of flood water. It has been a concern, heightened by the flood of December 5, that nothing should happen to delay the scheme. The last thing anyone wants are objections leading to a public inquiry. It has already been placed on record that the barrier would have prevented all the flooding in Boston town on December 5, so we don’t want to see any unnecessary repeat of that. Boston Borough Council officers attended a meeting with the Environment Agency and other involved parties in London for the Treasury “gateway review”. Projects as big as the barrier scheme, which is set to cost around £90 million to build and have a whole-life cost of £238 million, have to leap hurdles in stages – gateway reviews – in order to continue to proceed. The first such review called by the Treasury saw the scheme supported, with a recommendation that it proceed as quickly and smoothly as possible.

River Thames Flood Barrier.

Any potential delay to the scheme has been identified as a project risk. The barrier - a smaller version of the structure lowered in the Thames at times of risk to protect London from flooding - is to be built in the tidal Haven in Boston. The barrier is currently expected to be finished by 2019. As well as managing the risk from tidal flooding it will also enable opportunities for regenerating the town’s waterways. Water levels in the Haven will be controlled to provide a more attractive waterfront making navigation on Boston’s waterways safer and more predictable. This will achieve a major phase of the Fens Waterways Link, with more opportunities for recreation and tourism. The flood defence banks of the Haven immediately downstream of the Barrier will be raised providing Boston with protection from a tidal surge with a 1 in 300 chance of happening in any one year and give the town one of the best standards of protection against tidal flooding in the country. It is also pleasing to see progress on another major scheme for Boston – the construction of a new school in Fydell Crescent, tidying up what has been an untidy plot of land near the centre of town. The former Ford garage has been an eyesore for some time, and has even led to problems with rough sleepers camping out there. So it will be good to see a modern new school complex rise from the rubble over the coming months.

Advice

School Holidays by Stuart Hellon

School holidays – don’t you just love this time of year? Or is it a nightmare trying to find childcare for the long summer days? For working parents this can be the most difficult time of the year. Here are the answers to your most frequently asked questions as the holidays approach: It’s difficult to find anyone to look after my child during school holidays. How old do children have to be before I can leave them on their own? Although the law does not set an age limit at which children can or cannot be left alone, you can be prosecuted for leaving a child under the age of 12 at risk of burning. If a child at any age is thought to be neglected or at risk of significant harm the parents may be prosecuted. The child could be taken into care by the local authority. Whether a child is judged to be at risk or not would depend on the age and development of the child and the environment in which they were left. How old do children have to be to babysit? A child can babysit at any age – there are no legal restrictions relating specifically to age, whether the babysitter is being paid or not. However, if a parent chooses to leave her/his child with a babysitter under 16, the parent remains legally responsible for the care and safety of the child. Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour

As you will have probably heard on the news, parts of Boston Town Centre could soon have a total ban on drinking in the street following a meeting at Boston Borough Council on the 21st May

A

t present there is a ban on street drinking but only if the persons drinking are acting anti-socially or are likely to act anti-socially but the legislation to which this applies is soon to be replaced with the new Community Protection Orders. These orders give the local council the power to impose an outright ban on street drinking removing the current anti-social behaviour element of the existing legislation. Boston Borough Council and the Police have applied for this new Community Protection Order following analytical research showing a problem with street drinking in parts of the town centre and a consultation with the general public which showed a huge majority in favour of an outright ban. What this means is that under the new legislation it will be prohibited to drink alcohol in the street in the town centre and anybody found committing this offence will have their alcohol confiscated and could face a fine. The benefits this will bring will be a reduction in drinking in the street which people time and time again tell us makes them feel unsafe and creates a poor image for the town. If this Order is granted Boston will be the first town in England to have such an order and we will be widely scrutinised on a

The World Cup is starting later this month and additional officers will be on duty in Boston for all of England’s Group stage matches as a precaution. We are not anticipating any problems but we will have the officers we need should there be any. In May over 30 pedal cycles were stolen in Boston so can I urge all bike owners to ensure they properly lock their bike and avoid leaving them in their front gardens where many of these offences have occurred. We have dedicated patrols and initiatives specifically targeted at reducing these offences and persons have been arrested but we need your help in reducing these crimes and proper security of your bike makes a vast difference.

Family days out

Family Days Out ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

With the summer holidays now just a couple of weeks away you don’t need to travel too far to have a great day out

W

Railways Who doesn’t love a ride behind a big old steam engine? The Nene Valley Railway run trips throughout the summer which can be enjoyed whatever the weather. To learn a bit more about the railway lines in the area, pay a visit to the Heckington Steam Railway museum and Rocks by Rail at the Rutland Railway museum. Rocky by Rail is a working museum so you can take a trip back in time to see what the industrial landscape of the area used to look like.

hether we are in for record hot temperatures or a wet and windy summer there is plenty to do indoors and outdoors. We take a look at days out in the area to keep you busy!

Cooling off in the heat

To escape the heat of the day and cool off visit a swimming pool. There are different types of pool in the area, from m standard swimming to leisure pools and heated outdoor pools. For a good swim head to Spalding or Boston pools, for fun and a splash around visit Stamford or Bourne Leisure Pools, or to not miss a second of the sun it’s Bourne Outdoor Pool.

Active Days

If you love to stay active and want a day out to please the whole family then there are several venues which fit the bill. If the weather is good then Tallington Lakes offers so many activities you might like to consider taking advantage of their caravan and camp site and making a weekend of it! Activities there include water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, dinghy sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and zorbing. Away from the water you can take advantage of their dry ski slope and climbing wall. The Off Limits centre in Grantham is a little further out but they offer a different range of outdoor activities such as archery, quad biking, Segway experiences and family treasure hunts. Rutland Cycling gives you the opportunity to hire a bike and cycle around the beautiful Rutland Water. There plents of pubs and cafes to stop at along the way to help keep those energy levels up! Whaplode’s Maze in Maize chooses a different theme each year – pit your wits against the maze but remember to wear sensible footwear…

Animals and Birds

If learning about wildlife and getting your hands dirty is

your thing then there is plenty to keep you occupied. At Baytree Owl Centre and Parrot Zoo Boston you can see birds you wouldn’t normally find in your garden! You can also try your luck spotting birds at the RSPB reserve at Frampton Marsh. Leisure Cruises at Boston Marina operate seal and birdwatching tours. At Oslinc Ostrich Farm in Moorby near Boston you not only get the chance to see the ostriches on the farm but at the end of the tour you can visit the farm shop and buy an ostrich burger! Pigeons Farm and Sacrewell Farm let you get up close to some less exotic animals – enjoying the outdoors and learning about animals and their environments. Farms continue to be a popular choice for families and rightly so – they offer something for everyone. If catching rather than looking appeals to you the Ashleigh Lakes welcomes families and dogs to their fishing lakes. Have a competition to see who can catch the biggest fish! There is a chance to try out before the holidays, book a stay in June (be quick!!) and receive 17% off pitch and hook-up fees.

Local Places of Interest and History

We are very lucky to live in an area steeped in history so have amazing buildings and places of interest. Burghley House with its Gardens of Surprise and Grimsthorpe Castle along with the Grimsthorpe Festival on the August Bank Holiday are great places to while away the day. Having a picnic in Bourne Woods followed by a long walk under a leafy canopy is a great activity on a hot day. There are also many windmills in the area– Maud Foster Windmill Boston, Heckington Windmill and Moulton Windmill are all open to visitors.

Wet Weather

If we do find ourselves facing a few days of wet weather then it’s time to try these indoor activities. Stamford Corn Exchange, Blackfriars Boston and the South Holland Centre run family friendly performances and workshops throughout the summer so check local listings for dates and times. They also screen films along with Showcase Cinemas in Peterborough and West End Cinema in Boston. Boston Bowl, Alleykatz Spalding and Laser Storm Spalding all give you the chance to burn off the energy built up from having to stay indoors! On Saturdays there is also a Roller Disco at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding. For the younger ones there is soft play at Fun Farm Spalding, Playbarn Spalding, Playtowers Boston, Fuzzy Eds Boston, Rascals Fun Factory Stamford and Let’s Play Bourne. Show off your artistic flair by painting ceramics. Pots of Fun Stamford, Pots of Fun Boston, Doodles Pottery and Painting Spalding and Paint a Pot Bourne all offer you the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and create a personalised gift or a keepsake. Education Plan

Your Child’s Education Plan from Birth to University

Some parents have their children’s education plan mapped out pretty much from birth

Acorn Child Care Acorn Child care in Spalding believe that tailoring the Early Years Experience for each individual child right from the outset is vital. In the summer term, before children move up to school, the practitioners there fine tune the skills children have gained, to ensure they are confident about their forthcoming move. Jen Holmes, Manager says “our hope is that every Little Acorn and Oaklet will have had the happiest Early Years Experience possible and that by learning through play they will be excited about lifelong learning.

By Kathy Holmes

O

thers have a vague idea of which primary school they would like their little ones to attend or have heard about a nursery that sounds like the right place for them. In reality, choosing where your child goes to learn is an ongoing process which continues right through to adulthood so it deserves the time and effort which is required to get it right for both you and your child. Choosing a Nursery Generally, the nursery you choose will be done according to the way you feel about it at a visit. You are under no legal obligation to send your child to a nursery many parents feel that it is good preparation for moving up to a school setting. Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes but broadly fall into four categories: 1) Playgroup or pre-school group 2) Private nursery schools 3) State nursery school 4) Nursery attached to a primary school For many parents the first port of call is to ask other parents they know about which nursery their children attend as well as asking for recommendations. Make a list of the things which are important to you personally that a nursery should have. This can include things such as “having a large outdoor area” or “there must be a lovely quiet area” After word of mouth you can take a look online or see who is advertising locally to draw up a list of the nurseries close to you. The next thing to do is book visits to your shortlist. If you find that your list of names is too long you can take a look online at their OFSTED reports. It is a good way of comparing nurseries as well as seeing if they excel in the areas you find important. You can find all the information you need at www.ofsted.gov.uk So now the exciting part – the visits! Make sure you leave plenty of time to visit each one so you do not have to rush, as well as being able to ask any questions you may have. Remember that each nursery will offer something different for your child so keep an open mind – you may find that something which had never occurred to you as being important in selecting a nursery suddenly becomes essential to you! Whilst on your visit make sure you ask plenty of questions. Sandra Algar, Manager of Bells Day Nursery suggests the following questions should be on your list: “Ask about opening hours to make sure it fits around your schedule. That’s an important one. We get asked a lot about the ages we cater for and whether there is funding available for two year olds. The outside play area also comes up a lot. “Don’t be afraid to ask about the qualifications that the staff hold. A good nursery will be only too happy to

share this with you. After all, it will be demonstrating to you that their staff are able to meet your child’s needs.” Also spend time talking to the staff. If they are friendly and enthusiastic then you can start to picture how they will be with your child. Do the children look content and interested in what they are doing? Ask about a typical day – what routines are there and what sort of activities will your child be taking part in? Are there healthy selections and snack opportunities throughout the day? Do they have meals similar to the ones you would serve at home or is there the chance for your child to experience new tastes and flavours? What does the area outdoors look like and how often do the children get to go outdoors? This can be especially important in the summer months. Once you feel you have decided on a favourite then contact your preferred nursery and ask for a trial session. This may only be an hour or two but you can experience dropping off your child and seeing how much fun they have had when you pick them up. After all that research and effort, having the right nursery can reap big rewards for both you and your child. Primary Schools Before your child finishes at nursery you will need to put in an application for a primary school place. The trick to choosing the right school, as with choosing a nursery, is to do your research. Begin by looking at the catchment area you belong to, if you are unsure then a call to the local education authority will answer the question for you. Once you know which schools are available to you then the next step is to decide which is right for your children. Most schools have a website and you can glean most of the information you need on there. They are legally obliged to include information about their policies, OFSTED results and assessment information. You can also have a look at local league tables to see where the school sits. If you are lucky enough to know parents with children at any of the schools you are considering then have a good chat with them to find out what they do and don’t like about the school. Once you have narrowed it down then arrange to visit the school. Most schools have open days throughout the year which you can attend or if you can’t make it you can speak to the school to arrange a more suitable time for a tour All schools have admission criteria to decide which children can be allocated places. The council can give you a booklet about schools’ criteria and how to apply. Æ SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

17

Education Plan

Your Child’s Education Plan from Birth to University

Æ Admission criteria are different for each school. For example, schools may give priority to children who have a brother or sister at the school already, who live close to the school, from a particular religion (for faith schools), who do well in an entrance exam (for selective schools), who went to a particular primary school, in care or being looked after (all schools must have this as a top priority). You must apply to be considered for a place at a school, even if it is linked to your child’s current nursery or primary school. Independent schools have their own admissions procedures so you will need to apply directly if you want to send your child to an independent school. Applications usually open at the beginning of the autumn term of the year before your child is due to start school. You must apply for your place by 15 January. You will be asked to list the schools you’re applying for in order of preference and you must apply for at least 3 schools. Councils will send confirmations for primary schools on 16 April. Choosing a secondary school Before you know it the end of the primary school years will be upon you and as soon as your child starts their final year, Year 6, you will need to start making a decision about secondary schools. The process is very similar to selecting a primary school with a key exception – we live in an area which still has a grammar school system which needs to be taken into account. Lincolnshire’s 14 Grammar schools are non-fee paying state schools which are selective (via the 11 plus test) that are open to all children who qualify. The Local Authority is not responsible for selection arrangements and testing but does coordinate the admissions process through which parents make applications to the schools of their choice. To be eligible for a place at one of Lincolnshire’s grammar schools, children must demonstrate that they have reached the required standard for entry as determined by 11 plus testing. The tests are normally taken early in the last year of primary school. Parents who would like their children to take the 11 Plus will need to register for testing towards the end of Year 5. As tests are taken in September, most parents will be able to find out whether their children are eligible for a grammar school place before having to complete the Local Authority application forms. Much like the primary school application form, you are able to choose up to three secondary schools. If a child is not offered a grammar school place, either because he or she has not reached the required standard for entry, or the school is over-subscribed, there is a right of appeal to an independent panel. Irrespective of whether a grammar school is in your plan or not it is a good idea to repeat the process you went through with primary schools and pay a visit to the schools you are considering. Bourne Grammar School’s Director of Business & Development, Jane Gray, told us, “There’s nothing like first-hand experience

to convey what school life is really like, as well as getting a feel for the learning environment.” This time having your child with you is an absolute must – it’s not always necessary when choosing a primary but at secondary level your child can give you important feedback and may want to ask their own questions which otherwise wouldn’t have occurred to you. The whole process lasts seven months, from September when you can begin to visit open days to March when the offers of places are sent out, so prepare yourself for a long wait. Sixth Form or College? Before your child sits their GCSEs at age 16, they will need to have a think about what they would like to do next. There are two main routes here – a sixth form attached to a school (possibly the school they currently attend) or college. There is a divergence here as your child can choose whether to continue down an academic route or choose a vocational qualification to begin studying a trade. GCSE grades and the personal preference of your child will very much dictate the route they take but you can assist by talking through their options and going with them to prospective open evenings. University Applications The careers service at your child’s secondary school will help to begin the process of applying for a place at University. If you, as a parent, would like to get involved then your best resource is UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services) which not only has as much information as you could possibly need but they also have details of all the institutions and courses on offer. If your child has no indication of what they want to study at University then encourage them to think about what they enjoy doing day to day as themes may come out of it which relate to various courses. At the very least it will get them to focus on what they would and wouldn’t enjoy studying! Once your child has decided what they want to study and made sure that their predicted A Level grades will allow them access to their chosen course it is time to fill out a UCAS application form (which is essentially an application through UCAS to the university or universities of your choice). Once the applications have been processed your child will be contacted by the university or universities to let them know if they have been offered a place (subject to A Level grades) on their course. Once you have all these answers all that remains is to try and keep your children calm while they sit their A Levels! Should your child not get the results they were hoping for, there is a process known as Clearing which they can enter which will match them up with a course based on their grades and preferences. It is important to be supportive of your child during what will obviously be a stressful time.

“To be eligible for a place at one of Lincolnshire’s grammar schools, children must demonstrate that they have reached the required standard for entry as determined by 11 plus testing.”

here will be nobody tired from having to do all the driving and you will have ready access to a tour guide with local knowledge. You also won’t need to worry about where to stay as many coach tour companies offer packages so everything is taken care of. You can take the opportunity to visit somewhere you wouldn’t usually go or take a day trip safe in the knowledge that your pick up and drop off are relatively close to home or sometimes to your doorstep itself. There is something for everyone from sightseeing to trips to heading to London to see a show and even trips abroad. When you are looking for a tour operator make sure you use someone with a good reputation who is well established. You can then take a look online or call for a brochure before making the big decision – where to go! You may find that some negotiation is required here as different family members may have other preferences to you so be prepared to have a long discussion! Once you have made a decision make sure you are booking onto the right kind of tour – if you turn up with your family on a coach trip meant for singles there are going to be some odd looks coming your way! If you are looking to attend a special event such as a music concert or Christmas market then travelling by coach removes the headache of having to find somewhere to park and then the even bigger headache of having to find the car again when you’ve finished! You’ll also find that, for the most part, coaches will be able to park closer to your venue than you could in a car so there will be less distance to walk. Dickinson’s Coaches, based in Boston are a good example of exactly what a tour operator can provide. They offer tours which keep you pretty local such as Norfolk but also go further afield to places like the Lake District. You can also travel across the water to Ireland. Back in the UK they offer a variety of days out from London musicals to Christmas markets so

22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

“...travelling by coach removes the headache of having to find somewhere to park...”

you can start to get a picture of the sheer variety that operators have to offer. Coach Trips can be especially fun if you are travelling abroad as all you need to do is book and let the touring company take care of the rest. You can then travel comfortably through your country or countries of choice without having to hire a car and remember which side of the road you are meant to be driving on! While the touring company will offer excursions there is nothing to stop you heading off and exploring on your own should the fancy take you giving you the best of an organised tour and a bit of personal time. Another benefit is that you can pay for all of your excursions in advance meaning you can carry less holiday money with you so you won’t have to spend your time worrying about how much money you have on you. Although coach travel is comfortable make sure you have your creature comforts with you. If you are travelling overnight then take a pillow, blanket and toiletries so you can get a good night’s sleep and then be able to freshen up in the morning! If you are just taking a day trip don’t forget snacks and some form of entertainment should you find yourself on a motorway with not too much to look at. Books (or e-readers), mobile phones and MP3 players can all come in handy. And above all don’t forget your camera!

Focus on Heckington

Heckington ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Heckington, between Sleaford and Boston, is one of the largest villages in Lincolnshire with around 1500 houses “Heckington show is a fun packed family day out with a firework concert on the Saturday evening.”

T

here is a vibrant community with many amenities including its own swimming pool and an informative railway museum at the old station. There is plenty to see with listed buildings and an 8 sailed windmill. People from outside the village will probably best recognise the name from the famous Heckington Show, a great example of a country show, showing up some of the larger fairs. Wandering around the village you should make sure you include St Andrews church in your itinerary. It is a Grade 1 listed building, built in the 1300s and is beautifully decorated inside and out with many statues, gargoyles, beasts, royal faces, angels and animals. The history of the church is well documented, starting with the principal benefactor was Richard de Potesgrave, chaplain to Edward III. If history is a passion of yours, be it people or architecture, you will find it fascinating. A huge draw in the village is Heckington Windmill, the only surviving 8 sailed windmill in the country. Heckington has a history steeped in windmills. Indeed it is has had its fair share of windmills and is the only village to have had 4,5,6 and 8 sailed windmills. Although not working at the moment due to the sail replacement programme, when the windmill is fully operational they are able to grind our own wheat for flour. The mill is split over 6 floors - the ground floor, meal floor, stone floor, bin floor, top floor and dust floor. The 8 sails are kept facing into the wind by a fan tail at the rear. The sails are attached to the wind shaft which transfers the power from the sails into the drive shaft which runs down to the stone floor to turn the mill stones. The two bin floors are used to store wheat, the grain being raised up from the ground floor by the sail powered chain hoist. Gravity brings the grain down from the storage bins into the mill stones where it is ground into flour. The flour then travels down shutes to the meal floor where it is weighed and bagged for sale. Heckington Show, the largest village show in England, runs every July, and has done so since 1863. This year it is running on the 26th & 27th. As well as the usual attractions you would expect with a country show, you can also show off your athletic side with the annual road race. There are races for the children too. There are full programmes in the main arena, countryside arena and concert marquee and there is a throw-back to the past with a tug of war and vintage machinery. Animals are also well represented with cattle and sheep, a dog show, a donkey show, heavy horses, show jumping and small animals. It’s a fun packed family day out with a firework concert on the Saturday evening.

Home Project

Maximise your space ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

These days space really is at a premium. Rather than moving house, many people are choosing to stay put and maximise the space they have

E

xtending, converting or being smarter with the existing space, we take a look at the most popular choices – loft and garage conversions, conservatories and smart hints and tips for those nooks and crannies!

Garages

It is often much cheaper to convert existing space than having to physically knock down walls and extend your property. Provided you have a decent size driveway the garage is your easiest bet, be it internal or external. As an internal garage will provide you with a new downstairs room it is perfect for a multitude of uses – a dining room, home office, playroom or even a utility room. A large exterior garage can be converted and, with a couple of stud walls, can make an acceptable sized granny flat. The major works which will take place with an internal garage conversion are the floor and walls and windows. Due to old fire regulations you might find your floor will need to be raised. Your floor and walls will need to be protected from damp and insulated. These days this is often done via the use of stud walls so as to minimise the disruption. You will also need to replace the garage door with a window. To make it blend in with the house try to choose windows which are the same as the rest of the house and ask your builder if he can source bricks which are the same colour as the rest of the house. The good news with garage conversions is that, in general, they do not require planning permission although it is always best to check as there are certain restrictions. It will also leave your council tax band unaffected.

Lofts

If you have enough room in your loft (ensure you have at least 2.3 metres of headroom) then a loft conversion can create a huge space in your home. Costs for converting a loft can be much higher so it is always best to begin with a company who has experience in the area. South Lincs Consulting are able to assist in all aspects of planning so they are a good first port of call. They will not only be able to advise as to the best use of the space but will know the best places for en-suites, storage space and staircases. If you are planning an en-suite find out from a plumber first if your current system can handle it! When pricing up, remember to add in the price of Dormer or Velux windows. Freeing up so much space gives you a great choice of what to do with the space. While most people opt to turn it into a master bedroom there are also an increasing number of people who turn it into home office space as it is far enough away to block 30 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

“If you are considering changing your boiler then Able Energy in Boston can talk you through your options.”

out all of the hustle and bustle downstairs!! Planning permission is not normally required unless you are extending the space.

Conservatories

Provided you leave enough room to build a decent sized conservatory it can be used as a functional room all year round rather than just during the warmer months. The proposed use for your conservatory will dictate its size – if you want a large dining table in there then you will need more space than if you want a playroom with a couple of toyboxes! Once you have decided on usage and are comfortable with how much of your garden you are going to lose double check that the size of the conservatory won’t be disproportionate to the size of the house. At the end of the day it needs to look good as well as providing more space. As a conservatory is at ground level you will not need planning permission. Make sure you use a company who have experience with conservatories – Pyramid Home Improvements in Moulton Seas End are able to advise and assist with design.

Kitchens

There are two trains of thought here – making better use of the space you have or starting again with a new kitchen. If you opt to try and do better in your current kitchen then look at smart storage solutions and make sure you use all areas - from the insides of cupboard doors to hanging a magnetic strip by your cooker for knives and utensils. A new kitchen offers all sorts of modern design solutions and is also one of the quickest ways to also add value to your home so well worth considering. Make an appointment with a bespoke kitchen designer such as Spalding Luxury Kitchens and you will be amazed what they can squeeze into the smallest of spaces. There are even kitchens which utilise the space behind the kickboards!

Nooks and Crannies

There are areas in your house which you may not even think about which you could utilise. The most overlooked is the cupboard under the stairs. Generally used as a dumping ground for coats, vacuum cleaners and ironing boards you could either use it more wisely for storage or even change its usage to become a downstairs toilet. As we change from traditional to combi-boilers, airing cupboards are becoming redundant. What could you do with such a large cupboard space? Or perhaps you could rip it out altogether and use the space for something different. If you are considering changing your boiler then Able Energy in Boston can talk you through your options.

Gardening

Keeping your lawn in great condition during the summer ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

What is summer in the garden for, if not for sitting, relaxing and enjoying the fruits of your labours?

“During periods which are particularly dry try not to cut your lawn at all.”

U

nfortunately, your lawn requires some serious maintenance over the summer months so we’ve put together our top tips for maintaining a lush lawn. Follow this simple advice this summer and ensure your lawn stays green and healthy: Believe it or not, when the weather starts to get really hot grass growth begins to slow down. In hot weather don’t be tempted to mow the lawn very short, as a guide don’t remove more than a third of the length of the grass in a single cut. By only removing a small amount not only will it neaten your lawn but your grass won’t need to find large amounts of energy in the hot weather in order to continue growing. Rather than having a weekly routine, judge when your lawn needs mowing based on how fast the lawn is growing at any given time. If the weather is right for your lawn you might notice a big growth spurt meaning you will have to cut it more than once in a week to keep it in optimum condition. During periods which are particularly dry try not to cut your lawn at all. You may notice that after a long spell without rain the colour of your lawn changes from green to brown. If you can bear it, try not to water the lawn once the rain returns so will the condition of your lawn. Conversely, if you have just laid or sown a lawn ensure it is well watered through dry spells. When you do water make sure that the ground is really soaked for the best results as it will allow the water to reach the roots. Make sure the temperature is cool when you do this, with evening being the best time. For the best appearance, keep an eye on your borders! Use a half-moon edging tool around the edges of your lawn. Keep the areas around your fences clear

using a trimmer. Watch out for weeds! Weeds in your lawn should be treated using a selective herbicide. Make sure if you have pets that it will not pose a threat to them. If herbicides aren’t your thing then there is nothing to stop you pullilng the weeds out by hand. Just make sure that you always pull weeds out by the root otherwise they will be back in no time at all! And don’t forget the critters! Whilst you are busy protecting your plants, fruit and vegetables from pests many people forget to check their lawns are clear. Be especially aware of the following: Ants - Tunnelling under your lawn creates ant hills. As with herbicides, if you use pesticides then make sure they are safe for any pets or children playing in the garden. If in doubt then seek professional advice. Bees - Miner bees are diggers and will dig under your lawn to make their nests. They are harmless but can be an inconvenience. Chafer bug - Also known as the June bug due to the time of year it hatches. The bug itself is harmless but its larvae feed on the roots of your grass. Crane flies and leatherjackets - Also known as the daddy longlegs. You’ll find your damage when wildlife rips up your lawn to eat them. Moles - More of a countryside problem than a town one, moles dig under your lawn in search of food. They are notoriously difficult to kill so if you do want to get rid of them then your best bet is to hire a professional exterminator. Worms - This is a tricky one. Worms can be extremely beneficial for your lawn and garden in general however 3 types of worm create worm casts (a small pile of dirt which sits on your lawn). The dirt in itself isn’t too much of a problem but it is an ideal environment for weeds to grow. All you can do in this instance is to brush them away.

Infiniti Q50

Price

The English word ‘infinity’ derives from Latin infinitas, meaning “being without finish” but, in the automotive world, Infiniti’s Q50 is certainly ‘finished’ beautifully

T

he car, launched in 2013, is the latest entrant in the mid-size premium class to compete against rivals such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3

Series. The four-door, rear-wheel-drive saloon, tested here in 2.2 diesel SE Premium trim, comes with a high level of standard equipment. Sparkling LED lighting is used in the rear light units, the front fog lights and the turn indicators in the door mirrors. Scratch-shield paint is even used to ensure unwanted minor scrapes simply disappear, whilst chrome-trimmed twin exhaust pipes and halogen daytime running lights enhance the Q50’s sporting presence. Step inside and the two front compartments are separated by a distinctive design line that runs through the centre console. The dashboard features twin touch screens along with a fully customisable digital environment. Audio is provided by a six-speaker system featuring a CD player, Bluetooth streaming, USB/iPod connectivity and voice-operated control. The ideal temperature in the cabin is vigilantly maintained by a dual-zone climate control system which features autorecirculation for when the outside air may not be quite so clean. The rear seats feature a 60/40 split and a ski hatch to allow for

any extra storage capacity requirements. A multi-function leather-bound steering wheel is also included along with leathertrimmed, heated seats. Behind the wheel, there’s an overriding sensation of luxury. In fact, the Infiniti feels more extravagant than many of the mile munching BMWs, Mercs and Audis it’s pitched against. However, there’s an initial diesel clatter on start up, and that sounds louder than some of the Q50’s German rivals. No great shakes though as on the move a sense of calm prevails. The car glides through its automatic gears seamlessly. Without doubt, if you’re after a relaxing commute you could drive all day enveloped in opulence without needing to ruffle any feathers. In contrast, if you like a little spice injected into your journey then you can change the car’s character by pressing the ‘sport’ mode button. This tightens up the Q50’s drivetrain and chassis, turning it into a majestic missile. It will accelerate vigorously and take corners more precisely than before, shaking things up for you on your otherwise monotonous commute to the office. Other drive settings include ‘snow’ and ‘personal’. The former makes the Infiniti behave more obediently in wintry weather and the latter tunes the car into your own driving style.

£29,500 on the road

The fitment of cruise control, speed limiter, stop start, hill start assist, rear view camera, rain sensing wipers and keyless entry make the Q50 easy to live with. It’s also a very safe vehicle. Safety systems include vehicle dynamic control, including active trace and traction control, tyre pressure warning and brake assist. Indeed, according to the latest tests carried out by Thatcham, the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, the Q50 has proved itself to have one of the most advanced standard fit collision avoidance systems that the Centre has ever tested. Together with its recently announced five star Euro NCAP rating the Infiniti Q50 is easily one of the safest cars on the road.
