Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY SPALDING when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.

No sooner has Spring sprung than we are talking about Summer and in this issue we look at everything from getting bikini-ready for your summer holidays to making a decision between a patio and decking in your garden. With the warmer weather on the way we also take a look at home security. I was stunned recently to read about police apprehending burglars who had walked into houses through unlocked doors! Never mind gaining entry through open windows or having to physically break their way in – these houses were an absolute gift! By taking a few simple precautions you can keep your house and its contents secure and we offer our handy hints and tips on staying safe in the summer. Elsewhere in the issue we take some time out with Holbeach Town Band. From humble beginnings the band is now around 60 members strong and always out and about. They are always on the lookout for new members and if you are thinking about taking up an instrument, no matter what your age, then the Band would love to hear from you. Details are on page 29. Finally, with the elections just around the corner don’t forget to head out and vote on May 7. If you want to have your say on how the country is run on both a national and local level then now’s your chance – make your voice heard! Enjoy the issue.

New homes opened A unique development of 14 new homes has been opened in Pinchbeck – with the houses filled exclusively by local residents. The two and three bedroom energy efficient homes in Maurice Chappell Way, were officially opened at a special ceremony last week which saw councillors, dignitaries and housing chiefs attend. The £1.4 million development is one of only two schemes in Lincolnshire where homes are built specifically for local people who are in need of housing. The project was set up by the Pinchbeck Community Land Trust, which comprises of volunteers from the village and the homes will be managed by the Lincolnshire Rural Housing Association. South Holland District Council played a central role in supporting the delivery of the new homes, which included assisting the bid for funding, finding suitable sites and identifying householders local to Pinchbeck who would benefit from the properties. After receiving several applications and carrying out interviews, the homes have now been filled by local people who moved in on March 9. Cllr Christine Lawton, SHDC’s Portfolio Holder for Housing said: “This is a groundbreaking project and it is a huge honour to have such an innovative community-led housing development in South Holland. “The houses were specifically built to meet the needs of Pinchbeck people and the way they are managed will ensure they stay prioritised for local residents, their children and families in the future. “The homes are a great addition to Pinchbeck, built by local people and for local people, and I look forward to seeing the tenants settling into their new homes.”

Commonwealth Flag raised South Holland District Council proudly joined with other local authorities, community groups and organisations across the world to mark Commonwealth Day. Councillors came together with local dignitaries and war veterans for a special flag raising ceremony outside the council’s offices in Priory Road in Spalding on Monday morning. Council Chairman Robert Clark raised the Commonwealth flag at 10am – the precise time that thousands of others all over the globe were doing the same. The gathered crowd included members of the Royal British Legion, the Naval Association and the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Toby Dennis. Several South Holland councillors also attended the ceremony, which saw a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation read out as well as a message of good wishes from her Majesty the Queen. Cllr Clark said: “It was fantastic to see so many people attend the ceremony which gave everyone a chance to appreciate everything the Commonwealth stands for. “Publicly signalling the continued influence the Commonwealth plays around the world in the 21st century and the values

it represents is an opportunity we are again proud to be part of.” Over 700 Commonwealth flags were raised throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man to mark the event. The unique initiative, now in its second year, is again catching the imagination of thousands of participants from all walks of life. Flag fliers included Heads of State and Prime Ministers, Lord Mayors, school children and students, Girl Guides and Scouts, Sea, Army, and Air Cadets, charities and community groups as well as Commonwealth Ex-Servicemen and major shipping lines.

Improved facilities for abuse victims Improved facilities and support for victims of domestic abuse across Lincolnshire will be created following a successful bid for government funding. South Holland District Council teamed up with six other local authorities – Boston Borough, East Lindsey, North Kesteven, South Kesteven, West Lindsey and Lincoln City Council – to bid for funds from the Department for Communities

and Local Government (DCLG). The DCLG had set aside £10 million for councils to bid for as part of a drive to improve existing facilities and services across the country and to ensure that victims and their families are kept safe. As a result of the successful bid, the seven Lincolnshire districts will receive a pot of £430k which will help increase the number of refuges in the district, and ensure that those who enter into refuge have

access to appropriate support. Cllr Christine Lawton, SHDC’s portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, said: “We are determined to ensure there is a strong safety net for anyone facing the frightening threat of violence in their own home. “The funding will lead to improved refuges and increase the level of support currently offered to victims, maintaining a strong network offering help to those at risk.”

Lincolnshire Sport announced as Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce's Charity of the Year Lincolnshire Sport are delighted to have been announced as the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce's Charity of the Year. With the British Cycling National Road Championships coming to Lincolnshire in June 2015, the Chamber felt that Lincolnshire Sport was an ideal choice for Charity of the Year as an integral non-profit organisation which delivers sport and health projects, events and activities to communities across the county. Simon Beardsley, Chief Executive at the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, said: ‘We are delighted to be supporting Lincolnshire Sport. The Chamber is supportive of initiatives which enhance the wellbeing of people living in Lincolnshire such as this one. Lincolnshire Sport’s main aim is to increase participation in sport and physical activity across the county and in turn, these activities enrich the lives of local people

and develop the skills of individuals.’ The Chamber introduced a Charity of the Year to ensure that fundraising events reap the best rewards for the chosen organisation. A whole host of events to raise funds for Lincolnshire Sport will take place throughout 2015, which will include an Annual Charity Banquet as well as a Golf Day, taking place in October. Janet Inman, Chief Executive at Lincolnshire Sport, added: "We are thrilled to have been chosen as the Lincolnshire Chamber's Charity of the Year and we are really looking forward to working together on a number of exciting projects throughout 2015. Sport and activity play an integral role in public health and we are delighted that the Chamber are supporting us and our partners in trying to make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of people in Lincolnshire."

Queensgate Shopping Centre is delighted to reveal figures that show usage of its electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the Green Clare car park tripled in just a year. In November 2013, Queensgate introduced six EV car charging points as part of its dedication to sustainable travel and greener living. During the year that followed, the number of people utilising the facilities increased threefold. Smiths Nissan, which attended the launch of Queensgate’s electric vehicle charging service with its electric Nissan Leaf, has noted an increase in the number of people purchasing electric vehicles. Queensgate currently holds a bronze award for its position on sustainable travel and will be upgraded to silver in March 2015. Working in partnership with Travelchoice, Queensgate works to promote sustainable travel to its team, including retailers, as well as shoppers. Use of EV charging points at Queensgate is free; shoppers simply park in the Green Clare car park and select a designated EV space. Designed to be easy to use, the charging points allow green-minded shoppers to plug their vehicles in to recharge whilst they shop.

Richard loses six stone in weight Anyone who struggles with their weight will tell you losing it is often not the hard part – keeping it off is. After working with Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) health trainers retired Royal Air Force man Richard Tory, 54, has finally found a way to do just that. Richard lost ten inches off his waistline and six stone in weight, taking himself out of the at-risk category for developing Type 2 Diabetes. And he is coming up to the one-year anniversary of achieving a new healthier weight. Richard, of the Staniland area of Boston, said: “I have always been on the larger side and, since my mid to late teens, have been on and off of various diets. It has been a constant fight to try to stop my weight getting out of control. In 2012, I was told my weight was putting me at risk of diabetes and initially I lost a bit, but by the summer of 2013, I was back up to 18 stone 4lb.” He began working with a health trainer at the end of 2013 and, crucially, was sent on a cooking course. Richard said: “Being able to see what food looks like in the various stages of preparation and having someone to put my ‘stupid’ questions to was so helpful. What did a cook really mean by ‘browning’ meat? It looked grey to me! Richard, who is a dedicated volunteer, filling his working week with roles at LCVS, Lincolnshire Credit Union, Boston and Fenside Community

Centre, started walking everywhere instead of driving. Leaving home only ten or 15 minutes earlier, he finds he often arrives earlier than he would have in the car. The Health Trainer Service in Lincolnshire is an established and successful service, providing informal, confidential and free advice and support to people over the age of 16 years.Health Trainers are based in local communities and work with individuals and groups. More online services for residents More online services for residents in South Holland will be created as part of a comprehensive programme of digital improvements in the district after South Holland District Council and its partner Breckland District Council secured £25,000 in government funding. “Making local services even more accessible to all residents is a priority area for us" says Cllr Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for Communications. “Our new Corporate Plan outlines the Council's ambition to provide the right services, at the right time and in the right way. “Making the best use of digital technology will play a big role in delivering our plans and, thanks to this funding, we will shortly begin work on two initial projects. In the longer term our plan is to dramatically increase the range of services accessible to residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We will develop an online 'Book and Pay ' system which will allow residents and businesses to carry out more transactions online using their laptops, tablets and smart phones, as well as at council offices with assisted support.

“Many residents are keen to use quicker and more convenient ways to pay, but currently lack online skills, and we are keen to support them in getting to grips with new technology. “The second project to be supported by the funding will cover the provision of online service terminals in reception areas and training our staff to show customers how to search for information and complete tasks online. “This new initiative will be in addition to our traditional face to face and phone services, which residents continue to require.” The Digital Expert Programme, developed and run by the Local Government Association (LGA), has allocated a total of £390,000 to 27 local authorities. “The Digital Experts Programme will give a helping hand to those councils who are keen to draw on the learning of their peers and quickly implement what has worked well elsewhere, and we look forward to seeing the results.” The savings in cash and resources achieved in South Holland through digital transformation will be used to help meet the needs of residents with more complex requirements.

Kerstin wins Open Arts A talented young artist had to pinch herself after being told that her artwork had been voted as the best at this year’s South Holland Open Arts exhibition. Kerstin Lankey (20), from Spalding, won the public vote trophy for her pastel-drawn picture ‘The Old Man’. Kerstin, who runs her own pet portrait business, entered the exhibition to test her people drawing skills and spotted the subject of her work in a photographic magazine. She said: “I specialise in drawing pets and animals but didn’t have much experience of people, so I thought I’d try something different. “When I saw the photo in an old magazine I instantly thought it was very distinctive. www.votematch.org As this issue is being delivered we will be just days away from the general election and, by all accounts, it’s going to be a close one. Because local (and some mayoral) elections are happening at the same time it’s likely you will have been bombarded with information – through the letterbox, on your TV and online. Despite this I have a few friends who are planning not to vote because “I don’t know what the parties stand for” or “They are all as bad as each other” or, the mindboggling, “none of their policies really apply to me”. I would urge everyone who is eligible to vote to get out there and do just that. If you are unsure who to vote for (and believe me, you are not alone) then take a little time to familiarise yourself with your candidates and their election promises. You won’t have to look too far as they are all putting their time and effort into trying to secure your vote at this very moment. If you’re really not sure where to start then I’d like to direct you to a website called www. votematch.org It’s a straightforward website

which will ask you 20 questions about your beliefs on certain topics before telling you which party you agree with the most and, therefore, might like to consider voting for. You are first asked to rate personal importance to the following topics: Economy, Education, Environment, Immigration, NHS & Health, Political Power, Security & Policing, Tax & Benefits and Trending Issues. Once you’ve put them into order it will provide you with statements and you can choose to agree, disagree, stay neutral or take a different stance. If you agree you are asked how important an issue it is to you. The entire process takes just a few minutes. At the end of the questionnaire you are asked to eliminate any parties that you definitely wouldn’t ask for before giving you your results. Put some thought into it and answer truthfully – you might surprise yourself with just which issues are important to you. When you get your result perhaps take that as your starting point to investigate a little further before your trip to the ballot box on May 7. But make sure you do go – your voice deserves to be heard.

Advice

Right to a GP ❱ BY LISA BARWELL You have the right to register with a GP if you live within the GP's catchment area even if you come from abroad. You can choose which GP you want to be registered with.

Choosing a GP You can get a list of local GPs from your local Health Watch or from NHS Choices at www.nhs.uk. The list will contain the following information about each GP: • surgery address and telephone number • gender of the GP • languages spoken by the GP, if the GP agrees this should be included • particular health interests, if the GP agrees this should be included • whether the GP does minor surgery • whether the GP offers contraceptive and/or maternity services • what the GP’s deputising arrangements are and whether a commercial deputising service is used. The list may also contain information on whether any alternative therapies are available within the practice.

Registering with a GP You should contact the surgery you want to register with, and ask if they will take you on. If they agree, they will ask you to fill in a registration form. Some GP practices also want to see proof of your identity, like a passport, and proof of your address. Some GP practices may also ask for your NHS medical card or your NHS number. But you don't need either of these to

register with a GP or get NHS treatment. The GP practice will then send your details to the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), who will write to you to confirm that you're registered with the new practice. Your medical records will be sent to the new practice. Some CCGs also issue NHS medical cards. If they do, they will send you a new card when they write to you. But not all CCGs issue cards. If you're staying somewhere in the UK for less than three months, you can ask to be registered with a GP on a temporary basis. You can also register temporarily if you move around the country and have no permanent address.

NHS numbers and NHS medical cards NHS numbers help staff across the NHS get up-to-date information on patients' health. If you don't have a medical card, or have lost it, you should contact your local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), giving your name, address and date of birth, and the name and address of your previous GP. If possible, you should also give your NHS number.

Problems with registering Unless the GP’s register is full, or you live too far away for home visits, it is unlikely that the GP will refuse to accept you. However, if the GP does refuse to accept you, then they must have reasonable grounds for doing so. These must not have anything to do with race, gender, social class, age, religion, pregnancy or

maternity, sexual orientation, appearance, disability or medical condition. The GP must give you the reasons for their decision in writing. If a GP refuses to register you because of who you are, it could also be unlawful discrimination. If you have been unable to register with a GP, you should contact the local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) or NHS England. You should send your medical card, with a letter giving the name of any GPs who have refused to register you, and of any GPs with whom you would prefer not to be registered. The CCG will try to find a GP who is prepared to accept you. This will not necessarily be a GP of your choice. Once you have been allocated a GP, the GP must accept you and treat you, and can only remove you from their list under certain circumstances. The CCG will then have to find you another doctor. The CCG cannot help you find another GP if you are already registered with a GP.

Adult book choice Without a Trace by Lesley Pearse Coronation Day, 1953. Molly Heywood slips away from the celebrations and makes a shocking discovery: her friend Cassie is dead and her six-year-old daughter Petal has vanished without a trace. The only clue is a letter from London, where Cassie once lived. Now it is up to Molly to head to there and uncover the past that her friend kept so well hidden. The closer Molly gets to the truth, the more perilous her journey becomes. She has given up everything - her home, happiness and a chance at love - all to find Petal. But is she also risking her life? Reserve your copy today online at www. lincolnshire.gov.uk/libraries or call 01522 782010 or call in to Spalding library.

Monkshouse Primary School Years 3 and 4 have been drawing their Roman topic to a close with presentations to their classmates and families. There was an amazing turn out to view the outcomes and there was an incredible range of presentations, with many of the children making films, re-creating buildings and artefacts, making roman pots and researching all manner of different subjects. Well done to them all for taking such care and showing great enthusiasm and creativity.

Spalding High School It has been a busy term for Spalding High School with successes in sport and competitions plus trips abroad and events within school. Having hosted the Young Enterprise Boston & South Holland Area Final our 6th form students were thrilled to have won the Best Company and Best Marketing awards with their company Esscential. Maths success followed for the Year 10’s in the Mathematics Feast held at Kesteven & Grantham Girls’ School. Our team particularly shone in the Problem Solving round, being the only team to score maximum marks. Year 8 students enjoyed an interactive presentation on the history of space exploration, culminating in the chance to design and test their own rockets. Taking inspiration from the 10 metre rocket from the company Starchaser which was parked outside the school, students thoroughly enjoyed their day as well as thinking about possible future careers in this new field. The House Music Festival, a whole school event involving musicians and singers from all year groups took place on the same day as Red Nose Day ensuring that students enjoyed a day of comedy and music. With points being awarded towards the House Music

Trophy students competed in fifteen sections, solos, ensembles, choirs and composition. The total raised for Red Nose Day, through a variety of activities was £1186.13. The Sports teams have been kept busy this term with the Year 8 Netball Team winning the South Lincs District Tournament. A tense final match saw them win 11 goals to 4. The gymnastics team came first in the East Midlands Acro and Tumbling Competition meaning they represent the East Midlands in the National Finals. In football the U13 (11 a side) won the Lincolnshire County Cup, a knock out event involving schools from across the county. The final score 5-1 to the High School. Finally this term saw school trips including the popular French Exchange programme with our girls visiting Salon de Provence and surrounding areas. Art students had a fantastic trip to New York, taking in famous sites and visiting art galleries and museums. Finishing this term the school orchestra left for a trip to Lohne in North Germany where they had the chance to record and rehearse with professional musicians.

Wisbech Grammar School The desperate bid by scientists to feed a mushrooming global population has been highlighted in a lecture at Wisbech Grammar School. In the latest in a series of twilight enrichment talks Dr Lesley Boyd, of the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, asked a 55-strong audience if science could save the world from hunger. By 2050 there would be nine billion people living on the planet, and already population growth was a bigger killer than AIDS and tuberculosis – and the problem was compounded by emerging economies using the land for biofuels and meat. Faced with a desperate need to produce more with less, all nations had a collective responsibility to ensure that there was sufficient food for the future and it was essential to disseminate knowledge across national borders in order to tackle the global threat. Dr Boyd had worked for a number of years on the re-synthesis of wheat crops, which allowed some of theire positive characteristics to be enhanced as well as enabling some of the less useful aspects to be weaned out. Genetic breeding had been employed to develop disease resistance and influence the time of sprouting, and work on agronomy had been initiated with a view to improving yields. A big step forward had been achieved in the 1960s by the Nobel prize winner, Norman Borlau, the ‘father of the Green Revolution’, who had developed semi-dwarf wheat varieties with bigger ears and shorter stems. Dr Boyd’s current project involved working with Kenyan smallholders to try to change the way they farmed and to promote the sharing of ideas to benefit the communities. The school’s deputy head of sixth form, Mrs Jane Missin, said that the purpose of the enrichment lectures was to engage pupils with topics beyond the academic curriculum. She said: “Once again our pupils showed a willingness to engage with a number of big issues. Their questions showed a mature understanding of the implications of food shortage in the future and they took the opportunity to benefit from the vast expertise of Dr Boyd, who had found them an inquisitive and responsive audience.”

Get Fit For Summer

Put your running shoes on With the lighter evenings now here, why not take up running and get into tip top shape for summer

“If you are not keen on dieting or find sticking to a certain amount of calories tricky then running is an effective way of keeping your weight under control.”

T

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

he thought of coming out of warm, forgiving winter jumpers can make a person cringe – perhaps there has been a little over- indulgence during the cold months to help combat the awful weather? It’s around this time of year that people begin to think about toning up for the summer. As well as taking a good look at your diet and perhaps reigning in those portion sizes, regular exercise can also help weight control as well as having a major impact on your health. With a wealth of exercise to choose from many still prefer good old fashioned running. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a total beginner there are benefits to be had for everyone. One of the best bits about running is that you can do it at your own pace, any time of the day and any time of

year. Provided you’ve got a pair of trainers you can go running. If you are a complete beginner you can start by walking and over time begin to increase your speed until you are running. Once you have got the knack of running you can look to begin to extend the distances you run. Once you’re happy with your distance you can try to pick up your pace. However you choose to train you can do it to your timescale and are much less likely to become demotivated by feeling like you can’t do it. As a general fitness tool there is not much that can match it for a total workout. It raises your heart rate and exercises your muscles. This in turn improves your fitness which will have a positive impact on the way you are able to live your life. And we’re not talking climbing mountains here, we’re talking being able to tackle the stairs without feeling out of breath, or being able to run around after your little ones without flagging too early! Running also decreases your chances of having heart-related illnesses. If you are not keen on dieting or find sticking to a certain amount of calories tricky then running is an effective way of keeping your weight under control. As exercise goes, running burns a huge amount of calories. It is also easier to keep up than exercise classes or trips to the gym as you are able to run at a time and a place that suits you without a time limit. You will hear runners talk about how addictive running is for them and the more you do it, the more you want to do. Exercise has proven again and again that it is an effective stress reliever as well as the benefits of getting outside into the fresh air. And running with a friend can make it more fun. If you are taking up running for the first time or have any questions or concerns it is best to consult your GP before embarking on any sort of exercise programme as they will be in the best position to advise you on the best levels of exercise to suit you.

Springtime Preparation for Garden Birds Although life is easier for birds during warmer months, they still need some help. Here’s how to prepare your garden for a flock of wild birds this summer Bird tables Scrub down your bird table. Good hygiene is vital, especially when baby birds eat your offerings. Use Johnsons Clean ‘n’ Safe Bird Table Disinfectant, which kills bacteria and viruses on bird tables, feeders and baths. Whilst you’re doing that, ensure they are still safe to use after a winter of rain. Wood rots, so if you intend to treat your bird table, do it now. Bird Boxes Empty and clean your bird boxes. If you are putting up a new box, ensure it’s out of direct sunlight, and away from any branches that a cat could scale. Check used bird boxes for rot, and sterilise them too. Water Sort out a good water supply plan for the summer. Use a shallow birdbath if you want to attract tits and chaffinches. Wash out and re-fill your birdbath as often as possible. Remember that birds need fresh water all year

round, but it’s especially important when the weather is dry. Nesting material Moss, dry grass, and leaves make excellent nesting material - don’t clear it all away when you tidy the garden. Feeding Food shortages often occur during winter, but when our summer turns cold or wet the worms and caterpillars vanish. Baby birds are dependent on your bird table! During winter our birds need fatty foods, but in summer they need more protein to help them moult and breed successfully. • Seeds - choose a good quality mix of seeds as this will attract a variety of birds • Fat balls - use a hanging feeder, so parent birds can take only a beakful • Mealworms are good for birds - robins especially love them. Buy mealworms dry and soak them for a real treat.

• Chopped fruit for blackbirds - apples, pears, bananas and grapes are excellent, but remember to cut up the grapes too. Soaked raisins and some grated mild cheese will be appreciated. • Don’t put out whole peanuts, or large chunks of bread and fat, as these can choke baby birds. Protect Against Garden Invaders You’re investing time and money in your wild birds, so don’t let invaders scare them off. Buy a squirrel-proof pole and hang feeders to deter magpies and pigeons. All wild animals are breeding at this time of year, and they’re all looking for food! Last but not least, try to keep cats, dogs and children out of your garden at sunrise and late evening, because birds prefer to feed then. Here’s to a summer of fledglings. Don’t forget your camera!

Food Safety Week

Food Safety Week 2015 The Chicken Challenge ❱ BY THE FOOD STANDARDS AGENCY

As part of Food Safety Week the Food Standards Agency is asking people to take a pledge whereby you promise to: H Bag and store raw chicken separately from other food, and keep it covered at the bottom of the fridge H Wash everything that's touched raw chicken in soap and hot water - chopping board, utensils and hands H Not wash raw chicken, as it splashes germs H Check your chicken is cooked properly, no pink, steaming hot and the juices run clear

A

s a nation, we love chicken – it brings us together around the table for Sunday lunch and around the barbecue on sunny afternoons. There's just one problem; raw chicken can spread campylobacter, a germ which causes more than 280,000 cases of serious food poisoning each year. The aim of Food Safety Week is to cut the number of cases of campylobacter poisoning in half by the end of this year. It's possible, if we all work together. You can do your bit by joining the Chicken Challenge, and showing the world your commitment to doing the little things that keep your loved ones safe. What is campylobacter? Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it but if it affects you, you won’t forget it. Campylobacter poisoning usually develops a few days after eating contaminated food and leads to symptoms that include abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea and, sometimes, vomiting. It can affect you forever, sparking off irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), reactive arthritis and, in rare cases, Guillain-Barré syndrome – a serious condition of the nervous system. At its worst, it can kill. What is the rest of the food chain doing? The poultry industry has agreed a target with the FSA to reduce levels of campylobacter on chickens at the end of the factory process by the end of 2015. If the industry meets this target, then this alone would give us the reduction that we are all looking for. It would be an amazing achievement, but we won’t be satisfied until this bug is no longer a public health problem – and that's why we are also looking for retailers to take action and for you to make sure you do the little things to keep your family safe. Find out more about how the industry is Acting on Campylobacter Together at food.gov.uk/actnow If you are planning to eat out, there is a way to check

The Importance of Reading

Meditation Course In everyday life we react to situations from past experience and these reactions rarely change. How often we wish we could react differently. Meditation allows us to step back from instinctive reaction and thought. Meditation trains the mind to be still. It helps us to delve deeper and discover the very essence of our self.

Reading for 20 minutes at home

R

ecently I read a really interesting infographic on Facebook about reading with your children. It took, as an example, three children. One who reads for one minute a day, one who reads for five minutes a day and one who reads for twenty. On the face of it, each child is picking up a book and reading, so what’s the difference? It all comes down to the amount of words they are being exposed to over the course of the year and what it adds up to. The difference, it turns out, is astonishing. The child who reads for one minute a day will see 8000 words across that year. Add an extra four minutes a day and the child who reads for five will see an impressive 282,000 words a year. Up it again and the child who reads for twenty will see a staggering 1,800,000 words a year. There is an obvious knock on effect here connected with school performance. But all of this aside, there is a simple pleasure to be had in listening to your child read. Whether it is favourites from your childhood or discovering new favourites together, this really is quality time to be spent with your children. And let’s not forget that once you have listened to your child read it is your turn come bedtime where there’s even more fun to be had through your own storytelling skills. If you have a reluctant reader then perhaps start by thinking outside of the box. It’s not always a case of putting a book in front of your child. Reading can come from all over the place – comics, magazines and newspapers can all hold items of interest. The local library is also a fantastic resource and often run reading challenges and story times. So however you choose to do it, pick up a book. Your children will thank you…

Suicide! Would you be able to ask the question “Are you thinking of suicide?”

One in 20 people at any one time in Britain are having thoughts of suicide and Lincolnshire figures have been higher than the national average. As ASIST Lead for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Rita Blackler is determined to help save lives... “We want to spread increased suicide awareness throughout the county, particularly in areas where there has been a high suicide rate. As a county we are working really hard with lots of organisations coming together to bring the suicide figures for Lincolnshire right down. People are often frightened to ask if someone is having thoughts of suicide as they fear they won’t know how to help if the answer is “Yes!” The majority of people who take their own lives don’t actually want to die they just want to be free of the pain and situation they are in. The more we talk about suicide, the more we can affect change. If the stigma and the taboo can be reduced, people at risk will hopefully talk to someone about their feelings and will find reasons to stay alive. There is often a lot of shame and guilt

attached to suicide because people feel they could or should have spotted the signs and done something to help, especially when it’s someone close to them”. If you would like to be ready, willing and able to save a life please consider enrolling on one of our courses: ASIST: A two consecutive-day training course teaching ‘suicide first aid’ to keep someone safe. safeTalk: A three and a half hour suicide awareness course.

To find out more about either of these courses which are free for those who live or work in Lincolnshire please contact the ASIST administrator Maureen Toogood by calling 01529 416251 or email Maureen.Toogood@LPFT.nhs.uk

Tanning

Banish your winter wardrobe and flash some gorgeously bronzed skin ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

A

fake tan is a fantastic way of having a summer look all year round. While some people are happy to grab a mitt and apply tanning products themselves at home many still prefer to head to the beauty salon to have a professional spray tan. If you have never used fake tan before and are thinking about heading out to the salon here are our tips to get the best from your tan. Prior to your appointment: If you have never had fake tan before then your beautician will recommend that you have a patch test. This is where a small amount of the products used will be applied to an inconspicuous area of your skin to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in the tan solution. This will be done at least a couple of days beforehand. Take this opportunity to discuss which shade of tan you would like with your beautician. If you are not sure they will be able to use their experience to advise you. Prepare your body beforehand. Do not shave or wax on the day of your appointment and also do not apply body moisturisers, deodorants or perfumes (and certainly not any home-applied fake tans) as they could react with products in the spray tan at the salon. When you head out to your appointment make sure you are wearing loose clothing as tight clothing will result in “tan lines” from where the clothing has pressed against your skin. Make sure your clothes are dark also as there will be some colour transference. Put sandals or flip flops on your feet, again to avoid streaks, tan lines and staining to shoes. At your appointment: Once in the beauty room you can get undressed and put on paper underwear if you wish. You may also step onto sticky soles which are like a paper insole which is sticky on the top. This stops

the tanning solution getting on to the soles of your feet and tanning them! Your tan will then be applied and your beautician will talk you through the entire process. On top of your tan will be what is called a guide colour. It is generally darker than the shade of tan you have gone for and is there so that the beautician can be sure she has good, even coverage of your skin so don’t panic when you first see yourself as it washes off! Once the tan is complete you will need to stand for a few minutes as the tan begins to sink into the skin. After your appointment: If you are able to walk to your appointment so much the better as you won’t have to worry about your seatbelt in the car causing a tan line. Keep your skin dry for a few hours while the tan develops. Developing times vary according to the brand of fake tan used so check with your beautician how long you need. Once developed jump into the shower and rinse off your guide colour with warm water and then you can use a gentle shower gel. To maintain your tan for as long as possible moisturise regularly and do not use any exfoliants as these will quickly strip you of your colour by removing the top layer of your skin.

Focus on Holbeach

Holbeach Town Band Holbeach Town Band has evolved over the past few years and is thriving! A key factor is its continued investment in encouraging children (and indeed adults) interested in playing brass instruments

T

❱ BY MEL HOPKIN he band offers structured learning and theory classes with a 100% pass rate in the ABRSM grade exams. All learners are encouraged to progress into the Victoria Training band before promotion into the

Senior Band. Brass bands date back to the middle of the 19th Century. They were particularly popular in mining and industrial areas and were often sponsored by the owners. In the early days of brass bands, it was not unusual to see woodwind instruments in a band. These days there is a standard line-up of brass instruments – cornets, flugel horn, tenor horns, baritone horns, euphoniums, trombones, tubas and percussion. There is evidence of a brass band in Holbeach from the early to middle 20th Century called the Holbeach Victoria Band. Holbeach Town Band (formerly Holbeach Community Band) was founded by the late Brian Long, a local brass player and the bands original conductor. With a grant of £50 from Holbeach Parish Council and a bank loan of £250 the band bought its first 12 instruments and 15 uniforms from the former Thetford Band. Mel Hopkin was appointed musical director of the band in 1997. He recognised a shortfall in providing training in musical instruments in schools. As a result the band developed a structured learning programme which is run solely by volunteers. It has a learner group for absolute beginners followed by the Victoria Training Band. Once the required standard is achieved players are then promoted to the Senior Band. There are also theory classes and individual lessons with the opportunity of sitting music grade exams. There is no age restriction. In addition, the band offers open days and visits to local schools where instruments are demonstrated and the children are given the chance to play a variety of instruments. In August the band has its annual Learn to Play Week. Members of the public are encouraged to visit. There are now 30 players in the Senior Band, 18 in the

Training Band (some of whom also play in the Senior Band), and 11 in the Learner Group. Membership of the Band is open to all brass band players and those wishing to learn. There is a membership fee of just £1 per week (50p to those still at school and FREE for the Learner Group). The Band provides instruments and uniforms for its members and extra training where it is needed. The Senior Band rehearses on Wednesday evenings throughout the year from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and welcomes visits from guest players. The Training Band meets from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings. The Band holds special training sessions for new learners (of all ages) at the bandroom every Saturday morning from 10.00 until 11.00; in the Learner Group you will learn how to read music and play an instrument. Music Theory lessons are also held on Saturday mornings from 11.00 to 12.00. Over the years, the Band has had tremendous support from the Holbeach Parish Council. In approx. 1978 the Council bought the former Jehovah’s Witness Hall in Back Lane, Holbeach for use by the band. They let it to the Band for a minimal rent. Having exclusive use of the bandroom is an excellent resource as it gives the band the flexibility to run its band practices and various learning groups and individual classes throughout the week. Unfortunately the Council have decided not to renew the Band’s Lease when it expires next spring. The band is now desperately seeking new premises. To ensure the bands future and continued development it is essential that the band has its own premises. Not only will it provide secure storage for instruments, music and equipment, it will offer an ideal base to continue to invest in the children of our community. A number of local organisations have offered to share a room, at a market rent, but the band’s ability to offer training sessions would be severely restricted and there will be no storage facilities. Without the ability to train new musicians, the future of the band looks gloomy!

EVENTS The Band performs at all sorts of events – please consider booking the Band for your event! Last year was the band’s busiest year ever with concerts in Holbeach, Fleet, Spalding, Donington, Whaplode, and Holbeach St Marks as well as many other events. Also a busy Christmas period of carols and concerts. The band has a busy month coming up – Moulton Chapel Flower Parade on 3rd May, Holbeach Flower Festival on 4th May, and a concert at Holbeach W.I. Hall on 10th May.

For further information about the Band contact the band's Musical Director, Mel Hopkin on 01775 712420. Email him at mel@ holbeachtownband. org.uk or visit the band’s website www. holbeachtownband. org.uk.

Gardening

Patios and Decking Relaxing in your garden in the evenings is one of the best parts of summer. If you are thinking about remodeling your garden which would suit you best - a patio or decking area?

"With patios your choice of paving is huge. As well as colour you can choose size, shape and even texture."

B

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

arbecuing, sunbathing or just plain relaxing, in summer you can end up spending as much time in your garden as you do indoors. But which will serve you better – a patio or decking? Both have their benefits as well as their downsides and, ultimately, it will come down to personal preference but as always it pays to do your homework to make sure you are making the right decision for you. The size and shape of your garden will play a part as well as the type of house you live in. It’s always best to start by having a look around – you’ll soon get a good feel for the types of materials you are drawn to and you can then use that information to make your decision. With patios your choice of paving is huge. As well as colour you can choose size, shape and even texture. You can use the colour of the bricks of your house to dictate colour or use it to make a dramatic statement. Neutral tones are always popular. Although trickier than decking to install, once the patio has been laid it will last for as long as you need it to. Looking after your patio is also easier than decking, with hosing down and sweeping with a stiff brush often being the only maintenance required. Decking is more contemporary and can be placed anywhere in your garden, it is not necessarily placed in the traditional position of immediately outside the house. So if a part of your garden is a sun-trap then that would be the obvious place to locate your decking. If you are not putting your decking at ground level then it will generally be easier to build than a patio. As decking is made of wood it can look a more natural addition to your garden, especially, for example, if it is at the bottom of your garden. Depending on the type of wood you choose it may also be cheaper to install than a patio. As with paving however, decking can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Maintenance can be a big deal when it comes to decking. Decking needs regular attention to stop the wood from rotting or discolouring and regular oiling to keep it in top condition. If you have decking immediately outside your house bear in mind that it can become slippery when wet so you will need to be careful, especially during the winter months. Both patios and decking can be laid as a DIY project but is not an easy job and there’s quite a bit of manpower involved. If you do choose not to involve the professionals then make sure you plan properly beforehand exactly where it is to go, how many paving stones or deck boards you need and, most importantly, what you will need to do in terms of preparation of the ground before any work even begins.

Home Security

Protecting your home in Summer During the Summer months we tend to spend more time out of the house, even if it is only in the back garden. We look at how to protect your home while you are out ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“Have you got unlocked gates? Low fences or hedges in front of your home? It’s perfect territory for a burglar to conceal themselves while they are trying to gain access to your property.”

W

e are all attached to our belongings. That’s why they are our belongings in the first place. And we’d very much like to keep it that way. Sadly burglaries do happen and often, the homeowner had made their home unintentionally attractive to a burglar. I once heard a fantastic piece of advice when it came to preventing burglary which was “don’t make your home the lowest hanging fruit”. In other words, you don’t have to make your home like Fort Knox but you need to do enough that it isn’t the most tempting home on the street. So what are the do’s and do not’s when it comes to protecting your home. Firstly, if you are security conscious consider how long it is since you put those systems into place. If you put the latest windows in with the best locks, but it was ten years ago, you might like to speak to a professional to see if it is time to upgrade as safety when it comes to windows is always being reviewed. Take a good, hard look at your windows. Statistically, around a third of burglars will enter a home in this way. For starters, don’t leave your windows open if you are out. It may be hot inside if you leave them closed but it will not be tempting for a burglar to have a go. Laminated glass is particularly difficult to break so if you have any windows that are out of the way which would present a good prospect to a burglar you might like to consider installing it. After windows comes doors. Whilst a third of burglars come in through a window the other two thirds will come in through the door. If you have glass in your door make sure you don’t leave your keys in the lock – for two reasons. Firstly the glass can be smashed and entry easily gained. Secondly, don’t put yourself in a position

32 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

whereby a burglar can enter through a window but leave quite easily through a door. A mortise deadlock will ensure a burglar can’t unlock the door simply by smashing their way in. If you have a professional round about your windows ask them to assess the doors and frames for their strength. Consider the exterior of your house. Have you got unlocked gates? Low fences or hedges in front of your home? It’s perfect territory for a burglar to conceal themselves while they are trying to gain access to your property. Also, if you haven’t already, install some outside lighting. Either a sensor light to attract immediate attention to the property or a constant low- level light which is on all night which deters burglars by maintaining light levels so they can easily be seen. And while we’re on the subject of outside be careful to secure your garage properly as not only does it house your car but often many tools that could help a burglar. Take extra care to secure your ladders! Finally, Burglar alarms. They really are self-explanatory as are their benefits. One piece of advice if you do own one is to get a generic alarm sticker rather than the branded one you will be provided with as it could give a savvy burglar information about how best to disable them. And don’t forget man’s best friend. A dog can be just as good a deterrent as an alarm. It doesn’t even have to be a big dog, in fact the yappier the better! So take your pick and ensure that your house doesn’t end up as the lowest hanging fruit.

T

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

he new SEAT Leon X-PERIENCE, with permanent fourwheel drive and all-road equipment, offers driving fun wherever you go. Sharp lines provide the estate with an appearance of energy and vitality. The silhouette is long and graceful, yet the car offers the full spectrum of usability for work and leisure, family and sport. The Leon X-PERIENCE is offered with 2.0 TDI 150PS and 184PS outputs. The higher powered 184PS (181bhp) SE Technology DSG, reviewed here, is hooked up to a direct shift gearbox (DSG) transmission as standard. This offers seamless shifting of the gears without a conventional clutch pedal and with full automatic or semimanual control. The range-topping estate is immediately recognisable through protection mouldings on the door sills and wheel arches, to give it a robust character, plus aluminiumlook touches for the rear bumper and lower front spoiler. Behind the wheel, the SEAT delivers dynamism that is only partially conveyed by its acceleration time of 7.1 seconds from 0-62mph, and its top speed of 139mph. The

36 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

engine declares its efficiency with a combined fuel consumption figure of 55.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 133 grams per kilometre. The X-PERIENCE also offers safety in all situations, thanks to its superb traction, excellent brakes and integrated assistance systems. Certainly, my jaunt across the Forest of Dean’s muddy trails demonstrated the effectiveness of the car’s permanent all-wheel drive and extra ground clearance. The balanced running gear reinforces the character of the new Leon ST. The springs master all surface irregularities, while the steering delivers refined directionality, as well as excellent feedback. The reason the permanent all-wheel drive system in the X-PERIENCE is so competent is because it’s among the most modern and efficient of its kind in the world. In normal operation, most of the engine power goes to the front wheels, but should their traction decrease, torque is diverted smoothly and in a matter of a few milliseconds to the rear, resulting in maximum grip. On road, the car is punchy and smooth. SEAT’s Drive Profile switch enables you to vary the

characteristics of the power steering, throttle control and the DSG transmission in three modes – eco, comfort and sport. There’s also an individual setting to give you as much or as little grunt as you want. In addition, the SEAT Drive Profile incorporates a sound actuator close to the engine to provide an even more refined engine tone. The rugged Leon’s individual interior offers an added dimension of driving entertainment too. Indeed, quality cabin materials, attention to detail and a combination of strong colours give this car bags of personality. It’s just a shame the centre console isn’t padded around knee height, but this is a small matter. The X-PERIENCE logo adorns the door sills and steering wheel, while orange stitching accentuates the adventurous spirit and youthfulness of this car, which can be both serious and fun. What’s more, the luggage compartment offers a carrying capacity of 587 litres, which extends to 1,470 litres with the rear-seats folded down. So, if you want a four-wheel-drive family vehicle which is as much at home on gravel and snow as it is on tarmac, then the Leon ST X-PERIENCE could be for you. The car is priced from £24,385 to £28,870.
