Innovation Support Lincolnshire food and drink firms are being urged to come forward if they need support for innovation projects. The Food and Drink iNet, which operates across the East Midlands, has an £85,500 pot of finance available this summer to provide match funded support for eligible projects, which could be focusing on new products, accessing new markets or looking at new ways of working. The Food and Drink iNet provides advice, guidance and financial support for innovation projects to eligible small and medium sized food and drink businesses through its advisors across Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. Now the organisation, which is funded by East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is looking to work with additional food and drink firms which have innovative ideas in the pipeline. Award winning Lincolnshire based Redhill Farm Free Range Pork is going from strength to strength thanks to support from the Food and Drink iNet and is urging fellow Lincolnshire food and drink businesses to contact the organisation if they are looking for support and advice

with innovation projects. Redhill Farm Free Range Pork, based at Blyton Carr, near Gainsborough, was given support to introduce a new interactive website which features a range of businessboosting initiatives including a food club for customers. The new website has proved a valuable asset to the company run by Jane and Terry Tomlinson, which recently received the local food award for the East of England by the Countryside Alliance. “I am extremely grateful to the Food and Drink iNet for their support towards our fabulous new website” said Jane Tomlinson, managing director of Redhill Farm Free Range Pork. The Food and Drink iNet has match-funded support available for eligible innovation projects that help to increase productivity, achieve growth, and improve competitiveness and sustainability. Redhill Farm Free Range Pork received £2,380 in support, which it match funded, to allow the firm to create a website with a number of innovative additions, such as the food club and the where to eat section.

“We are now able to address key business objectives and speak directly to both retail and business customers immediately about products, farmer’s markets and bring them up to date with all our news,” explained Jane Tomlinson. “The creation of ‘the food club’ and ‘where to eat’ sections has enabled

us to directly support our business customers, helping to promote them to a wider audience of like minded customers. We were recently awarded the local food award for the East of England by the Countryside Alliance and where able to communicate this via our website the same day.” “It is already proving to be a valuable asset to the business and we would like to say thank you for all the help that the Food and Drink iNet has provided to us.” Food and Drink iNet Director Richard Worrall said: “We are very pleased to hear that the new website is helping Redhill Farm to grow as a business, and are looking forward to working with other Lincolnshire food and drink businesses that would benefit from the advice and support of our specialist advisors.” The Food and Drink iNet is one of four regional iNets developed to link academic and private sector expertise and knowledge with local food and drink business innovation needs. The Food and Drink iNet aims to build on the tradition of innovation in the food and drink industry in the region by helping to create opportunities to develop knowledge and skills, and to help research, develop and implement new products, markets, services and processes. It is managed by a consortium, led by the Food and Drink Forum and including Food processing Farady, Nottingham Trent University, the University of Lincoln and the University of Nottingham. Advice

WILLS –

Have you made one? Planning for our deaths may seem morbid to many, but it has never been more essential for each of us to get things in order before we shuffle off this mortal coil. We all want to ensure our loved ones are provided for when we do pass away, and likewise we want to be certain that our possessions and property go to those who deserve them.

Why is it important to make a will? It is important for you to make a will, whether or not you consider you have many possessions or much money, because:• if you die without a will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated, which may not be the way that you would have wished; • unmarried partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a will, so the death of one partner may create serious financial problems for the remaining partner; • if you have children, you will need to make a will so that arrangements for the children can be made if either one or both parents die; • it may be possible to reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if advice is taken in advance and a will is made; • if your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a will to ensure that your money and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. For example, if you have separated and your ex-partner now lives with someone else, you may want to change your will. If you are married or enter into a registered civil partnership, this will make any previous will you have made invalid. When a person dies without leaving a valid will, their property (the estate) must be shared out according to certain rules. These are called the rules of intestacy. A person who dies without leaving a will is called an intestate person. Only married or civil partners and some other close relatives can inherit under the rules of intestacy. If someone makes a will but it is not legally valid, the rules of intestacy decide how the estate will be shared out, not the wishes expressed in the will.

Is it necessary to use a solicitor? It is generally advisable to use a solicitor or to have a solicitor check a will you have drawn up to make sure it will have the effect you want. It is easy to make mistakes and, if there are errors in the will, this can cause problems after your death. The charges for drawing up a will vary between solicitors and also depend on the complexity of the will. Before making a decision on who to use, it is always advisable to check with a few local solicitors to find out how much they charge. You may have access to legal advice through an addition to an insurance policy which might cover the costs of a solicitor preparing or checking a will. It is also worth you giving some thought to what you want to say in the will before seeing a solicitor. This should help reduce the costs involved. However, if you don’t use a solicitor, it is better to use a firm which belongs to the Institute of Professional Willwriters. These firms must follow a Code of Practice which covers the training and assessment of willwriters. There is also a complaints and conciliation procedure which can help you sort out problems if things go wrong. You can find details of The Code and of firms which belong to the Institute on the Institute’s website at www.ipw.org.uk. If you belong to a Trade Union they may offer a free will writing service. There are also books

10  SIMPLY HOLBEACH  www.simply-holbeach.co.uk

which provide guidance on how to draw up a will. These can help you decide if you should draw up your own will or if any of the pre-printed will forms available from stationers and charities are suitable. It is also possible to find help on the internet. However, you should only consider doing it yourself if the will is going to be straightforward. We would not recommend will writing firms as they are not regulated by the Law Society so there are few safeguards if things go wrong.

What should be included in a will To save time and reduce costs when going to a solicitor, you should give some thought to the major points which you want included in your will. You should consider such things as:• how much money and what property and possessions you have; for example, property, savings, occupational and personal pensions, insurance policies, bank and building society accounts, shares; • who you want to benefit from your will. You should make a list of all the people to whom you wish to leave money or possessions. These people are known as beneficiaries. You also need to consider whether you wish to leave any money to charity; • who should look after any children under 18; • who is going to sort out the estate and carry out your wishes as set out in the will. These people are known as the executors.

Heatwave...Are You Ready? In August 2003, temperatures hit 38C (101F) during a nine-day heatwave, the highest recorded in the UK. If hot weather hits this summer, take steps to make sure it doesn’t harm you or anyone you know.

Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it’s too hot for too long there are health risks, especially for the very young, the elderly and the seriously ill. In particular, very hot weather When heat becomes a problem An average temperature of 30C by day and 15C overnight would trigger a health alert (this figure varies slightly around the UK). These temperatures can have a significant effect on people’s health if they last for at least two days and the night in between. Why is a heatwave a problem? • dehydration (not having enough water) • overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing • heat exhaustion • heatstroke Who is most at risk? A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people in extreme heat are: • older people, especially those over 75 • babies and young children • people with a serious chronic condition, especially heart or breathing problems • people with mobility problems, for example people with

Parkinson’s disease or who have had a stroke • people with serious mental health problems • people on certain medications, including those that affect sweating and temperature control • people who misuse alcohol or drugs • people who are physically active, for example labourers or those doing sports Tips for coping The following advice applies to everybody when it comes to keeping cool and comfortable and reducing health risks: • Shut windows and pull down the blinds when it is hotter outside. If it’s safe, open them for ventilation when it is cooler. • Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don’t go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day) if you’re vulnerable to the effects of heat. • Keep rooms cool by using blinds or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn’t possible, use lightcoloured curtains and keep them closed • Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water. • Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol. • Stay tuned to the weather forecast on the radio or TV, or at the Met Office website. • Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need. • Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool.

check out the new site for local residents, find local businesses, advice, events, items for sale and exclusive offers

• Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors. • Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves. If you’re worried about yourself or a vulnerable neighbour, friend or relative, you can contact the local environmental health office at your local authority. Environmental health workers can visit a home to inspect it for hazards to health, including excess heat. How do I know if someone needs help? If someone feels unwell, get them somewhere cool to rest. Give them plenty of fluids to drink. If symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, weakness, dizziness or cramps get worse or don’t go away, seek medical help.

Health & Beauty

Late nights out, hectic early mornings - sometimes looking after our teeth can feel like a never-ending chore; and sometimes it’s a job we’re guilty of rushing. Having good oral health is more than just having bright, white teeth, or half-heartedly going through the routine of brushing. So how can we ensure we maintain good oral health?

Gum Disease, Tooth Decay & Cavities Gum disease develops gradually - starting with the build-up of plaque on teeth. Plaque is a deposit containing bacteria that forms on the surface of teeth and if it’s not removed by brushing, it builds up on the teeth leading to irritation and inflammation of the gums. In serious cases, this can develop into what dentists call chronic periodontitis, and this advanced stage can cause the teeth to loosen. According to research, it is estimated that 50-90% of the adult population in the UK has some degree of gum disease - a startling statistic!

The key to preventing gum disease is having good oral hygiene. Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Experts recommend that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes - first thing in the morning and then at least an hour after your evening meal, as brushing immediately after food can actually damage your teeth. NHS advice is that you floss at least three times a week too, to remove the food and plague from between the teeth and in areas your toothbrush can’t reach. Research shows that brushing alone only cleans about 60% of the surface of your teeth! It’s also important to regularly use a suitable mouthwash - ask your dentist or dental hygienist for some recommendations. And if you’re a smoker, you might want to re-think your habit - smoking makes gum disease even worse.

Ensuring you keep to your check-ups with your dentist will also help you keep on top of plague build-up. Your dentist will thoroughly clean and de-scale your teeth, and will also offer advice if you’re suffering from plague. Your dentist or hygienist will advise on your brushing technique, putting an end to any bad habits you’ve slipped into. Plague can also lead to tooth decay and cavities - so it’s important to keep up with the battle against plague. Acid in plague can gradually break down the surface of our teeth - and when the tooth breaks down and the nerves get exposed, that’s when the excruciating toothache occurs! According to the NHS, tooth decay is one of the most widespread health problems in the UK. More than half (55%) of adults in the UK have one or more decayed teeth. Your diet is also important when it comes to preventing gum disease, tooth decay and cavities; it’s the same advice you were told as a child - don’t eat too many sweets and fizzy drinks. Sugary foods and drinks should be an occasional treat! Finally - don’t forget to replace your toothbrush regularly for a continuous deep clean. Experts say you should buy a new toothbrush every two or three months.

Bad breath

The cause of bad breath is down to poor oral hygiene - not brushing properly means that

14  SIMPLY HOLBEACH  www.simply-holbeach.co.uk

food left caught between the teeth is broken down by bacteria, which causes bad breath. There are other factors that can lead to bad breath - such as eating spicy foods, certain diets and smoking, but bad breath often comes down to not looking after your oral hygiene properly. Aside from adopting a good teeth cleaning practice (brushing and flossing), the NHS recommend that you eat a balanced diet, reduce your alcohol intake, stop smoking, brush your tongue or use a tongue cleaner to clean to the back of your tongue (bacteria that cause bad breathe also lives on the tongue), drink plenty of fluids, reduce coffee intake and cut down on sugary foods and drinks. You might also find that chewing a sugar-free gum helps. If bad breath persists though, be sure to see your dentist for some professional advice. Once again, poor oral hygiene will be something your dentist will pick up on - so keep to your check-ups. Seeing your dentist is also a chance to have your teeth cleaned professionally and to get further advice if you think bad breath is becoming a problem.

White Teeth

There are lots of way to stop your teeth from becoming stained - really obvious things like cutting down on smoking, red wine and coffee. All the celebrities seem to have perfect white teeth - but don’t get tempted into the DIY kits on the market; it’s really important to visit

by Kate Gibbard your dentist for professional advice. Recently there has been a lot in the news about teeth whitening, with calls for tooth whitening to be carried out by registered, trained and qualified dental professionals only. A recent survey carried out by the dental regulators, the General Dental Council (GDC), shows that more than 80% of 1,021 adults polled believed tooth whitening should only ever be carried out by a dental professional (you can read more about this at www.dentistry. co.uk). Your dentist will be able to offer you crucial advice about the processes involved in having your teeth whitened. Always go to your dentist for advice.

Preventing Mouth Cancer Awareness of mouth cancer has grown recently - particularly after the celebrity Michael Douglas was diagnosed. According to the NHS, rates have risen by more than 20% in the last 30 years. Early detection is the key to aiding survival - and

making sure you keep up with your regular dentist check-ups is an essential part of this. When you see your dentist, they will examine the soft tissue of your mouth, enabling them to spot any early signs. For more information about preventing mouth cancer and how to spot the early signs, go to www.nhs.co.uk. Your dentist will also be able to give you advice.

Which Wine?

Food & Drink

by Hayley Willerton

If you will be hosting a dinner party for friends or family this summer it is always a good idea to put some thought into correctly pairing your wine choice to the food you will be serving. Certain wines go better with certain foods. This is usually true when you dine at an upmarket restaurant, where the menus have wine recommendations next to the food selections.

containing pasta and red sauce, like Italian food. It also goes well with beef and chocolate. In addition, certain red wines, like Pinot Noir, go well with pork. There are many types of red wine, so you should do more research to determine if the food you plan to serve goes well with it.

For wine food pairing ideas, search the internet, visit your local wine merchant or contact one of those restaurants where they are more than willing to help you. For your dinner party to go smoothly, and for it to be as memorable as possible, select your wines and foods according to wine food pairing techniques and plan everything down to the smallest detail. This will surely have them all talking about your dinner party for a long time!

As for white wine food pairing, it’s excellent for poultry and Asian food. It also pairs great with seafood, such as mussels shellfish. You can also pair it with certain appetizers.

White Wines

pair great with some appetizers. This is simply a general list of wine food pairing options. If you are unsure about pairing, you always have the internet at your disposal or you can read a good wine guide. You can even ask a chef or call your favorite restaurant. Pairing your wine and food properly will certainly contribute to your dinner being a great success and your guests walking away satisfied.

Sparkling Wines A perfect choice for after dinner is a sparkling wine. It goes well with desserts and fruits. Like white wine, they also

Wine food pairing is important because some wines are sweet, others are bitter, and these flavours marry better with certain foods. Just about every wine goes great with cheese, that’s why you see that wine and cheese are sold in the same places. However, some don’t go very well with some foods. Wine tasting is often held locally at Charterhouse Wines based at Spalding Lifestyle Garden Centre which would help you to see which ones go best with certain foods.

r u o Y n i s ’ t a h W ? h c i w d San From the 16th – 21st May it was British Sandwich Week; a week for us to celebrate the Great British Sandwich – what did you do? Believe it or not, the word ‘sandwich’ is said to be an English invention. The story goes that in the eighteenth century the 4th Earl of Sandwich demanded that his slices of beef were served between two chunks of bread, as a way of saving time and stopping his hands from getting greasy while playing cards. It can’t be claimed that the Earl invented the concept of the sandwich, but it’s thought that this forward thinking led to the naming of the sandwich.   So what do you have in your sandwiches today? Perhaps the dependable cheese and pickle sandwich or maybe you’ve gone for traditional ham? Or perhaps you’re a tuna fan, much to your work colleagues’ delight? According to the British Sandwich Association, 3.2 billion sandwiches leave the home in packed lunches each year! For 2011 we got into the spirit of things in the Simply office - everyone made their favourite sandwich to share with the team. A great way for us to celebrate this humble food item and exchange ideas - because let’s face it, sometimes making the same old sandwiches day in and day out can get a little boring. To help you put the spring back into your sandwich, we’ve come up with some ideas to get you started….

Old Favourites

Sometimes we can forget how good these are - and how economical they can be if we’re prepared to get organised in the kitchen. Using up the meat left over from meal times we’ve got options ranging from bbq beef sandwiches and cold sausage baguettes, to pork and stuffing rolls, coronation chicken wraps and salmon and cucumber stuffed pitas.

Get Creative

If you’re the one who starts to dread their packed lunch as 12 o’clock approaches and then ducks out to visit the vending machine, perhaps it’s time to try something different. Some of our favourites include leftover meat ball and roasted pepper salsa wraps; toasted sandwiches smothered in cream cheese with sliced pepper and cucumber; ham and pineapple sandwiches; bagels filled with avocado, tomato and fromage frais; roasted vegetable stuffed pitas; grated cheese, apple and carrot torpedos; and, for the really brave, cheese and pink grapefruit marmalade sandwiches.

Tips for Fussy Eaters

If you’ve got fussy eaters in the house, creativity is the key. Try making sandwiches that incorporate exciting colours, but be sure to keep the fillings simple and with smooth textures for easy eating. For younger children, you could try cutting out exciting shapes from the bread. You might find it hard to get

by Kate Gibbard

the family to eat wholegrain breads – but what about wholegrain wraps? Or try bread varieties that are made from half white and half wholegrain flour as a compromise.

Share Your Sandwiches

If you’ve got a creative sandwich recipe to share, why not send it to us? We’ll put our favourites on the recipe section at www.simply-spalding.co.uk and www. simply-holbeach.co.uk. Email us with your sandwich recipes at info@simply-holbeach.co.uk Check out the official British Sandwich Week website at www.britishsandwichweek.com for inspirational sandwich fillings. You can even vote for your favourite new sandwich.

Go on, try a new sandwich today!

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe We’re all going on a Summer holiday Whether you’re planning on holidaying this year with or without your pet there’s plenty to consider...

Leaving your pet behind Dogs

Although a dog will always be the first into the car when it looks as if something exciting is going on, it may not be possible to take your dog on holiday with you.

Look for bright clean surroundings, warm sleeping quarters and adequate exercise areas. Staff should be happy to answer your questions as well as being friendly and knowledgeable. Ask whether you can bring along a favourite toy or familiar blanket to keep your cat company and also what diet your cat will be fed. Make sure the cattery knows about your cat’s dietary needs and preferences, as well as any medical considerations.

Small animals

Many owners are fortunate to have dog-loving family and friends who know how to look after their dog and are prepared to do so. Alternatively, professional petsitters can move into your home to take care of them.

Many owners of small pets, such as hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, mice and rabbits, ask a friend or neighbour to look after their pet during the holidays. Write down your pet’s usual routine and food requirements, because these can be difficult for someone else to remember.

A stay in kennels is another option. It is essential to check out the kennels before booking to make sure they are licensed, clean and that the dogs are well cared for.

Make sure the carer has met your pet and will spend time grooming, playing with and generally fussing over them! You can leave a list of your pet’s likes and dislikes, too.

Your dog will need up-to-date vaccinations to stay in kennels and your dog’s vaccination record will be checked. Any dietary considerations or medical problems and treatment should be discussed with the kennels staff before you make the booking.

Taking your pets on holiday

Ask about exercise and feeding routines and take some familiar bedding, toys and food with you, to help your dog settle in.

Cats

You may decide to ask trusted family members or friends to pop in and care for your cat overnight. For longer breaks it is best to use the security of petsitters or a licensed cattery. The best catteries fill up quickly, especially during the school holidays, so early booking is essential. Your cat won’t be accepted into a reputable cattery unless it has up-to-date vaccinations and you’ll be asked to show your cat’s current vaccination record. Many people wouldn’t dream of going on holiday without their dogs. But there are a few things you need to consider before you set off.

Unfamiliar surroundings Remember that your pet is on unfamiliar territory, and may easily become lost or disoriented. It is always best to keep a dog on a lead until you have both become familiar with the area. Also, ensure that your dog has an identification tag and is microchipped.

Hidden hazards

Wherever you are, always check for hazards that could injure your pet, including barbed wire, broken glass, poisonous plants, chemicals, busy roads or unfenced cliffs.

Accommodation

Many hotels and campsites will accept dogs, but you must check this first, and book early. They may charge extra if your dog comes with you. Some coach, rail, ferry and air travel companies will also accept dogs, but require that you make special arrangements to transport them. It pays to find out about these details well in advance.

Beach safety

Holiday checklist

Every year the papers cover stories of dogs accidentally falling from cliffs or getting swept out to sea. They can also cut their paws on broken glass, or injure themselves by fetching sticks rather than Frisbees or suitably-sized balls.

A trip to the seaside can be full of hidden hazards for your pet.

Often dogs may only be allowed to walk on the beach outside the holiday season, and even then, only on a lead.

Sunburn

Like humans, pets need protection from intense sunshine. Protect the nose, ear tips and any white or hairless parts of cats or dogs with high factor pet sun cream. Try not to exercise pets during the hottest hours of the day but instead early in the morning or in the evening. Encourage pets to seek shade and never leave a dog tied up in the sun.

Heading overseas

If you are planning to take your pet overseas, this requires a great deal of planning, preparation and paperwork.

• • • • • •

Check kennels and catteries for yourself; make sure they are clean and well run and staff are friendly and helpful. Pack some of your pet’s favourite toys and a familiar blanket may help them settle into their holiday home. Always carry a supply of water for your pet on long car journeys. Schedule in a number of stops for your dog to exercise on the lead. Check with coach, train, ferry and air travel companies on any regulations they have for pets in transit. To apply for a pet passport, confirm with DEFRA or your vet that the PETS scheme includes the country you are planning on travelling to and start the application process months before you are due to leave. To find a dog sitter in your area, contact the National Association of Registered Petsitters on 0845 230 8544, visit www.dogsit.com or ask Rooke’s staff in store for recommendations.

Don’t assume that your pet insurance covers accidents and illness overseas. Most pet insurance policies only cover pets while they are in the UK. Check your policy before you go!

Family Life

Fathers Day Gift Guide

A man’s decision to become a dad has life-altering costs and benefits. On the cost side, the choice to raise a family often means scaling back many of the activities and interests that defined his life previously, in favour of spending time with the next generation. It also means giving up the freedom to be spontaneous whenever the mood strikes.

That said, there’s a reason why men make these sacrifices to don the title of “dad.” The primal desire to continue the family line is certainly one reason. Considering all of this, taking one day a year to show your appreciation for Dad is the least any good son or daughter can do. While gifts certainly aren’t the only way to show you care on Father’s Day, there’s nothing like the sense of personal satisfaction you can gain from giving a thoughtful item to the most important man in your life. According to askmen.com here are the top 10 gifts for your father this year No.10 Grilling Tools The grill, like a man’s office, is a personal sanctuary where mastery means everything. Your dad may not realise just how many useful tools exist now to help make the grilling experience that much better, so providing him with a BBQ Tool Belt or Stainless Steel Turner Tongs will both educate and impress him. No.9 Alcohol Sometimes nothing can take the edge off of a day of

stress and work like a nice stiff drink. Buy your dad top-shelf booze like a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label, or more affordable Bombay Sapphire, and you’ll give him a gift he can enjoy and appreciate with you on Father’s Day. No.8 Fishing Gear The traditionalist in your dad may lead him to believe that fishing is only about a rod, a reel and some line. Once he opens the luxurious handcrafted setl, or even the more reasonably compact fishing rod tote, you’re likely to see his vision of this age-old pastime expand to include his new toys.

No.7 A Set of Golf Clubs If your old man considers a round of golf as the closest thing he’s found to heaven on earth, then enhancing his equipment to improve his game is an obvious Father’s Day gift idea. Wow him with a new set of workhorse Ping G15 irons, or add yards to his drive with the Callaway FT-IZ and he’ll think of you every time he hits a great shot. No.6 Leather Wallet A man rarely thinks about the quality or image his wallet projects. After all, it’s tucked out of sight most of the time. Feeling, smelling and looking at the quality of wallets like the Sedgwick Bridle Leather Billfold will quickly make your dad realise just how shoddy his faithful standby is and show him it’s time to retire it. No.5 Wine Good wine is a luxury most men only learn to appreciate and have the means to acquire later in life. So remind your father of the perks of being an experienced dad by supplementing his collection. If a

wine shop’s massive selection intimidates you, start with something full-bodied from California – Pinot Noirs from the Russian River Valley and Chardonnays from Sonoma are sure bets. No.4 Driving Gloves Did your dad sell the family car for his own two-door roadster once you left the house for good? If so, then a pair of leather driving gloves will certainly add to his driving experience. No.3 Meat Most men associate the chance to dine on high-quality meat as a luxury only provided by restaurants. There are some excellent mail-order meat establishments that can deliver the same level of quality for your dad to use in his own special recipes to make grilling at home that much more of an experience. No.2 Sports Tickets It sounds sappy, but often great experiences and the memories they create are the only gifts that matter. A pair of tickets for you and your dad to go to a game and support his favourite team is a gift that will wow him and give him something to look forward to once Father’s Day is over. No.1 Landscaping Services The notion that a man enjoys mastering his domain by slaving away in the hot sun to cut grass, trim hedges and plant becomes less true as guys get older. However, frugal dads who never like to ask for help may not be too keen on admitting they’d rather have someone else step in. Give your dad the gift of a prepaid garden landscaping service and it will save his ego as well as his back.

Keeping Your   Elderly Family Members Safe

Family Life

by Hayley Willerton

For many families with an elderly loved one, the potential for injury while they are home alone is all too real. With the trend of “aging at home” on the rise, families and home carers are looking for reliable, affordable ways to ensure that the ones we love are safe at all times. For some, hiring a home carer is the best option. These carers either live at home to ensure round the clock care, or come throughout the course of the day to check in and take care of tasks that elderly people cannot take care of themselves, such as certain cleaning duties. Live-at-home carers are a good choice for families who are extremely busy and unable to provide the necessary assistance to their elderly family member. Additionally, these carers are helpful when the family member has certain conditions which require 24 hour supervision and assistance, such as mobility issues or conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia. Another option, for people who remain healthy and active in their older years, is to purchase a home medical alert system. The purpose of senior alert systems is to provide a quickly accessible method of alerting the emergency services of any problems your loved one may have. Although many people opt out of purchasing an alert system because they rely on telephones, the benefit of a medical alert device over a phone is that, since the device is worn on the body, it is immediately accessible. This is particularly helpful because when someone has an accident in an area of the house without a phone, or they are rendered immobile due to a fall

or other situation, they can simply press the button on either their medical alert bracelet or necklace which will immediately alert the company providing the service of their situation and send out an ambulance if needed. Typically, senior family members prefer a medical alert device as it affords them more independence than a home carer; however, it is ultimately up to the family to decide together which arrangement provides the best care for their loved ones. A live-in carer should be a priority for senior citizens with more severe conditions, but for those who are still healthy and active a medical alert device will usually suffice, especially for those who are still cared for by family regularly. The constant availability of aid provided by these services is a huge reassurance to family members who, for one reason or another, cannot provide the round the clock care their loved ones require and deserve. With the help of a medical alert service, you know your elderly family members can get help in any situation, giving them the safety and confidence to continue living alone, and giving you the peace of mind knowing that they will be taken care of 24 hours a day.

Powerful Joint   Venture Meets Surge In   Demand For Home-Produced Solar Energy

Advertisement Feature

Two well-known local companies have formed a new solar energy installation business to meet the upturn in demand for home-produced energy.

electricity generated by a renewable energy system which is used in the property, with an additional bonus for any energy produced which is exported to the electricity grid.

Manor Roofing Limited, a local well regarded roofing company and Cawoods Electrical, an established firm of Electrical Engineers and solar photovoltaic (PV) system designers, have joined forces to launch Manor Solar, a company that specialises in installing and maintaining solar PV panels on homes and properties in the East of England region. The new company’s new website www. manorsolarpower.co.uk, offering advice on the merits and benefits of solar PV panel installation, was launched this week.

government will specify that the installed system undergoes regular maintenance to ensure they continue to operate efficiently and the system owner could need to sign a declaration agreeing to meet their obligations under the scheme.

However, concerns that large-scale ‘industrial’ solar farms will suck up the majority of the available subsidy has led to an announcement by the energy secretary Chris Huhne in February this year that feed-in tariffs will no longer apply to large projects and that a comprehensive review of the feed-in tariff scheme will be taking place. Furthermore, a new scheme - the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) – will be introduced, probably in June 2011. While the RHI scheme is still being designed, the aim is to incentivise the generation of heat from renewable sources including solar thermal panels.

Commenting on the new venture, Contracts Director of Manor Roofing and co-founder of Manor Solar, Ian Holdup told us, “Solar energy is becoming more widespread in the UK, but we quickly realised that to give home owners the most appropriate products for their property requires the combined knowledge and expertise of qualified roofers and solar PV panel engineers. Our two firms offer expertise in our own field, which means we can provide a complete solution under the new company, not just a bolt on to our regular individual services.”

Mark Cawood, co-founder of Manor Solar explains why this is all good news for homeowners and owners of smaller properties where the energy production is likely to be less than 50 kilowatts. “The Feed-In Tariffs can appear to be almost too good to be true, giving everyone the chance to make their own energy, save money and help to make a difference to the environment, but there are some eligibility criteria that need to be met to qualify for the subsidy. Most importantly, all equipment and installers must be Microgeneration Certificate Scheme (MCS) certified for all systems under 50kW for new installations, while existing energy systems need to have been installed within qualifying dates.” Additionally, under the new RHI scheme, it is expected that the

It’s a fact that, for a nation that’s not known for its sunshine record, Solar Energy is starting to look increasingly attractive to home and property owners who now have the potential to become self-sufficient in energy while earning extra income. The introduction of Feed-In Tariffs (FITs) in 2010 led to a surge in interest in solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, with the Government offering guaranteed tax-free payments for renewable energy production. The Feed-In Tariffs, which were intended to encourage small-scale energy production by households, are based on the

As with all new technologies, renewable energy is still evolving, so it pays to do your homework if you are thinking about installing solar PV panels. This includes finding reliable, qualified installers to help you make a proper, informed decision on making an investment in renewable technologies for your home. Explaining why traditional roofing experience is essential to delivering well-designed solar systems, Ian Holdup told us, “Whilst the aim is to design and install a suitable solar PV system, it is imperative that the suitability and condition of the existing roof covering/structure is adequate for the long term. Our experience as a traditional roofing contractor coupled with Cawood Electrical’s expertise will ensure we install a system that is right for each individual client.” For more information about home-produced Solar Energy and installation options, visit www.manorsolarpower.co.uk.

House & Home

Preparing your house for sale – exterior space and kerb appeal O

by Sue Hessom

nce you have made the decision to sell your property you have to be of the mind-set that your home is no longer your personal space. It is now a product that needs presenting at its best in order to maximise its saleability to potential buyers. Preparing your home for viewing can be quite a daunting task – especially if you don’t know what to do or where to start.

Why bother if you’re moving?

It’s important to remember that most people make a decision within the first sixty seconds of viewing a property, so first impressions really do count. Although some people can view a property and visualise themselves living there, some people need help to do this. Preparing your house for sale can be the difference between achieving a quick sale at your asking price and having to reduce the figure further down the line. Contrary to belief, you do not have to spend thousands of pounds in order to transform your home. You just have to make sure your home appeals to its target audience, so with a little time and effort, and yes, perhaps a little money, you can soon have your house sold.

Where do you start?

Maintaining the outside space is something that is not often seen as a priority. If you are selling you need to ensure that the outside has as much appeal as the inside. You get one chance to impress a prospective owner so you need to make sure when they arrive outside your property, they like what they see. If they don’t, there’s a possibility that any chance of a sale will be lost before they’ve even stepped through the front door.

First things first

Begin by checking out the competition. I would recommend that you do this exercise prior to calling the estate agents as it could make a difference to your asking price. Do you research and see what similar properties in and around your area are selling for. Go and have a look at them and check out their kerb appeal. Be critical and make a mental note of anything that would raise concerns to you as a potential buyer. Likewise note what things, if any make the property seem more appealing.

Presentation – are the roof tiles, facia boards, guttering, fence and gate, paving slabs, garage door etc. all presented well and in a good state of repair? Cleanliness – are the windows and doors clean? Is there any peeling paintwork that needs attention? Tidiness – does the lawn need mowing? Are the hedges trimmed? Have the weeds been removed and gravel raked? Clutter – is the area free from rubbish, old plant pots, dustbins and dog mess? Do any children’s toys or bikes need collecting and putting away? Decoration –do you need to replace any window dressings? Is the house numbered and do the doorbell and exterior lights work? Appeal – do you have any? Invest in a new front door mat if yours is looking tatty and treat yourself to some nice plotted plants to go either side of the door and if space allows consider a couple of hanging baskets.

Now the back

All the rules for ‘front of the house’ still apply but the garden itself should be viewed as an extension of your home, so try to create an outdoor area that is nice and peaceful; a place where you can sit and relax, play with children or simply entertain friends. This doesn’t mean you have to call in Ground Force for a total revamp; you simply need to highlight its best features. Having total privacy from you neighbours is a good start. Ensure the fencing and shed are in good order and freshly painted. Clean any decking or patio areas, thoroughly removing any moss or weeds. Invest in some new patio furniture if yours is out-dated so that viewers may be encouraged to sit outside if it’s warm. If you have a water feature or external lighting, make sure they’re working before you are asked to turn them on. Maintain the lawn and borders ensuring any dog poo is picked up and disposed of. Make sure the washing line is not in use or left out. And if your borders are a little bare, invest in some potted plants – they will create great visual interest and you will be able to take them with you when you move.

Now return home and do the same to yours – look at it unfavourably, through the eyes of a stranger. Notice those trivial imperfections that you’ve been walking past on a daily basis for the last three months - you can’t afford to ignore them any longer. Starting ‘front of house’ check the following:-

Motoring By Tim Barnes-Clay - Twitter@ barnesclaymedia

Audi A1 THE AUDI A1 looks set to continue its dominance of the awards circuit as it celebrates its fifth title of the year – Best Small Car at the 2011 Fleet World Honours, which were held recently. The A1’s Best Small Car Fleet World award joins the prestigious Car of the Year and Supermini of the Year awards from What Car? magazine, Best Small Hatchback from Parkers New Car Awards and Best Luxury Small Car from the CarBuyer Awards. Audi’s success with the A1 could be down to its sheer good looks, but I suspect it’s more to do with the brand’s reputation for attention to detail and quality. It might not be the cheapest supermini, but Audis are always strong performers on the used market – and

that will balance the books.

arch.

Prices for the A1 start from £13,420 and go to £20,710 for the top of the range 1.4 TFSI 182bhp model.

The only drawback is the boot. It is small, and it backs up what Audi says about its target market. No family, or even a single parent, is going to get their young child’s pushchair and paraphernalia in there. Even if you’re without kids, a big shop will probably overwhelm the boot’s capacity.

My test model was the 1.4 TFSI 120bhp Sport S tronic, with an on the road price of £17,120. However, a list of options fitted to the press demo, including heated door mirrors, electric climate control, and multi-function steering wheel with gear shift-paddles inflated the cost to over £18k. It’s obvious that Audi is chasing a modern customer group with the new car. The German firm admits it is targeting a young, urban, lifestyle-oriented public. It makes sense; there was gap in the market for Audi and it has plugged it. It is the first premium car in the subcompact segment – a true, fully-fledged Audi – with sporting good looks. The interior of the A1 is surprisingly roomy with a clean, clear control layout. Modern materials and colours emphasise the youthful character of the A1 and Audi even offers colourcustomisation - from the air vents to the LED interior lights and seats. There are even a variety of paint finishes from which to choose for the roof

Behind the wheel, the agile chassis and the powerful 1.4 TFSI engine makes for a very satisfying drive. The steering is ultra-direct and, thanks to excellent weight distribution, and good electronic stabilisation gadgetry, the handling is precise and safe. The new A1 also sets new efficiency standards. For instance, the 120bhp TFSI engine follows the downsizing principle – it substitutes turbocharging for displacement and draws its fuel through direct injection units. With a 0-62mph sprint of 8.9 seconds, a top speed of 126mph and fuel consumption averaging 54.3mpg, you realise the technology isn’t just hype. The A1 is available with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, which shifts very quickly, comfortably and with no detectable interruption to the flow of power. Operated automatically or manually, the S tronic ‘box adds another layer of pleasure to what is an already fun car to drive. It also has another plus point – it further reduces fuel consumption. Apart from a bigger boot, and maybe a lower price-tag, could you ask for more?
