o here we are, standing in front of the huge milestone of SCHOOL! 4 years have flown by and we are about to wave our son off onto the next journey of starting at primary school. Whilst I cannot wait to see his little mind learning and developing part of me needs to mourn the freedom of the preschool years and being the person he trusts and believes over anyone else…I am sure I will hear plenty of times that I am wrong and his teacher tells him something different! So shirts ironed, trousers pressed and tissues at the ready. But back to this months’ magazine – we offer advice on your eye health and general wellbeing and if your own children are heading back to school this month, then make sure you read our advice to keep it is stress free as possible. In the home as the season changes, we look at home decor trends for Autumn. Annette from The Village Midwives discusses the pros and cons of re-usable nappies and finally Tim test drives the new Suzuki Attitude. Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the last few weeks of summer and catch up next month!

Search is on for Boston’s best small businesses Do you know of a small business in Boston borough deserving of a “most outstanding” accolade? Previous winners in the East Midlands have included a fish and chip shop, a manufacturer of horseboxes and a magnet exporter. We have many excellent small businesses in this area – producers of excellent food from Lincolnshire recipes and produce, engineers making products such as trailers and farm machinery and many run by families for generations easily come to mind. The Federation of Small Businesses is looking

for the best of the small businesses in the East Midlands as entries in the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards 2020. Small businesses are being urged to enter before the closing date of January 17, 2020 Les Phillimore, FSB regional chairman for the East Midlands, said: “For a chance to be recognised as the best small business in the East Midlands as well as in the whole of the UK, I’d encourage all small businesses to enter the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards. SMEs are a vital part of the East Midlands – contributing so much to the economy and making our region a more exciting place in which to live, work, study and visit. The awards give everyone the opportunity to join us in celebrating that SMEs account for 99.9% of businesses across every main industry sector and make a huge contribution to the UK economy.” The 2020 area winners for the East Midlands will be announced at an award ceremony on March 5 at the King Power Stadium in Leicester. These winners, with the exception of the Community

Business Award which is area level only, will then go forward to the UK final of the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards 2020, held in London, on May 21, 2020. The 12 FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards 2020 categories are: • Wellbeing in Small Business Award • Environmental Business of the Year • Digital/E-commerce Business of the Year • Sole Trader of the Year • High Growth Business of the Year • Micro-business of the Year • Start-up Business of the Year • Young Entrepreneur (aged 30 and under) • Business and Product Innovation Award • Family Business of the Year • International Business of the Year • Community Business of the Year (area level only) For further information and to enter the awards visit www.fsbawards.co.uk

Road victims’ memorial fund raiser Lunch with entertainment from Lincoln Ukulele Band, games and a raffle will help raise funds for the continued maintenance of the Lincolnshire Road Victims Memorial Garden in Boston’s Westgate Wood. The fundraising event is to be held from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday, September 8, at the Epic Centre at the Lincolnshire Showground. Tickets, £20, are available by calling 01205 367892. The Lincolnshire Road Victims Memorial project was launched in March 2016 and developed

a woodland walkway within Westgate Woods incorporating a weather proof memorial to enable family and friends of road death victims to have a place of quiet reflection and remembrance. The memorial was opened by patron Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Princess Diana’s sister last April. Since then an all-weather shelter has been built at the site. More than £50,000 was raised by a committee led by Anne Bourne, of Boston, whose daughter was one of four killed in a road crash.

Six figure funding lift for air ambulance More lives could be saved by the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance thanks to a sky-high donation of more than £160,000 which will boost funds to help it fly 24/7. Lincolnshire Co-op colleagues and members all got onboard to make sure the Society’s Community Champions fundraising for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance rocketed during spring – and it worked. From hundreds of miles cycled and thousands of steps taken by colleagues in sponsored activities to pin badges and Gadsby’s lemon slices bought instore by customers, it all added up. In fact, it’s the highest ever total raised through the Society’s Community Champions scheme. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Engagement Manager Sam Turner said: “Our colleagues and members always throw themselves into our fundraising for local good causes, but we’re delighted by how much our support for air ambulances took off. “Thanks to the speed of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and the skill of its crew, countless

lives have been saved. Our colleagues and members really took it upon themselves to say thank you together by raising this money. “We’re immensely proud to present this total to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, knowing that it’ll fund more of the charity’s vital work across our area.” The funding from Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Champions scheme will help Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance as it phases up from its current 7am-7pm seven day a week to 24/7 cover. It’s currently in a two-year trial to do this but must increase funds to help support the move. The ambucopter brings highly trained medics to the scene of incidents and emergencies within minutes, taking the equivalent of an A&E department to the scene. The specialist crew provide critical care for seriously ill and injured people and can transport them to hospital in a fraction of the time taken by road. The charity does this with no direct government funding – it’s fuelled instead by generous contributions from the community.

CEO at Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Karen Jobling said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Lincolnshire Co-op. The support shown by its customers and staff has been tremendous and the funds raised will enable our helicopter and life-saving crew to fly more missions, helping more patients in what is often their greatest hour of need. “A huge thank you to all who have helped to raise this fantastic sum - when you see our helicopter flying across the skies, know that you have helped to make this happen and your support means so much. We hope that you’ll never need us, but if you do we will be there.”

Carving out our place in history A group of wood carvers in Boston, who have just completed an ambitious memorial project, are about to start a new work to mark the 400th anniversary next year of the area’s connections with the Pilgrim Fathers. The Boston and South Holland Wood Carvers, who meet to work together at Shodfriar’s Hall in Boston, have been commissioned to make a carving for Fishtoft Parish Council using 70-yearold timber from pilings and wrecks dredged from the river during the Boston Barrier works. Carver Jane Kay explained that the group will be starting work soon on a piece of wood retrieved from The Haven which is ten feet long and about 18 inches square. The initial plan is to make it into a totem pole, marking the pact made between the early New World settlers and native American Indians from the Wampanoag tribe. She said it will also incorporate carved panels for children to walk and sit on and will be located close to the Pilgrim Fathers’ Memorial close to the river at Fishtoft. Its height will make it a landmark for visitors to the site and those passing by on the

6 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

water. Talented Jane has already completed a basrelief ceramic plaque in two parts measuring 26 inches by 18.5 inches for the Fishtoft project which depicts Pilgrims on a Hansa cog (a type of ship used by Hanseatic traders and specially constructed to deal with shallow waters in The Wash and Haven). It features the landmark Boston Stump (pictured). The wood carvers have completed their work on their major project – a memorial to all of Boston’s lost fishermen. Five oak panels have been carved with Boston fishing industry imagery such as a trawler on the waves, an anchor, ship’s wheel, seagulls, fish and sea shells. A supporting and connecting galvanised metal framework has been constructed by DS Engineering on the Riverside Industrial Estate in Boston. It includes a finial with rope work and fishing net in metal at its peak. The tribute will stand on a hexagonal base and a hexagonal illustrated concrete plinth making a total height of ?? feet and will be sited close to the river near St Botolph’s Footbridge for an official

unveiling next month (September). The original inspiration for the tribute was the fishermen who sailed from Boston at the outbreak of the First World War and were killed or taken prisoner. Some of the fishermen put to sea unaware that war had been declared and ten of 16 deep-sea trawlers from the port were sunk in the first month of the conflict. At least 51 fishermen lost their lives and 53 more were held prisoners of war. After work began it was decided to extend the tribute to include all fishermen from Boston who have been lost at sea.

Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month Cllr Martin Griggs, Housing and Communities Portfolio Holder, Boston Borough Council talks about homelessness.

Many of us slept on top of the covers with a welcome breeze from the open bedroom window during the recent spell of hot weather. But there is seldom a comfortable time to sleep outdoors, without shelter. And rough sleeping during the winter months can be especially brutal. People find themselves victim to homelessness for a variety of reasons – lives can so quickly become chaotic following the loss of income through unemployment or a relationship breakdown. Sadly some people choose to live on the streets.

addition to which, £160,520 is coming direct to the borough through the Rapid Rehousing Pathway fund and £145,050 through the Rough Sleeper Initiative Fund to support rough sleepers and those at risk of rough sleeping. The council led the county bid and the cash from the Controlling Migration Fund will be used to commission a countywide rough sleeping reconnection project. Homelessness professionals will be commissioned to locate and engage with rough sleepers and speak to them about solutions to their

Boston Borough Council and its partner organisations are well versed in trying to help those rough sleepers who will accept help to get out of their predicament. Issues around rough sleeping in Boston have been recognised with a boost of more than half a million pounds in recent months. Boston Borough Council’s bid to the Government’s Controlling Migration Fund returned a countywide grant of £234,235, in

problems to help remove the chaos from their lives. This could mean them moving off the streets and into temporary accommodation and help to regularise their lifestyle to become self-supporting. The money will help tackle the particular problem area of those who do not have access to public funds, such as homeless people here from Eastern Europe. In these cases, as a final resort, they could be helped to return to their country of origin where they would have access

8 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

to that country’s public funds. The £145,000 rough sleeper initiative grant will be used to provide two additional outreach street workers and access to nine temporary assessment beds in three previous HMOs to get those at risk off the streets and into a safer environment. A target has been set to reduce Boston’s street sleepers from 22 to 14; this also includes preventing the addition of new street sleepers. Latest findings from the Inclusive Boston partnership have confirmed that immigration is a key economic and social issue which fuels growth, meets labour and skills needs and influences our culture and way of life. An earlier grant to the council of £1.4 million from the Government’s Controlling Migration Fund illustrated the need in Boston to build community cohesion and encourage integration, tackle an increase in rough sleeping, especially among nonUK nationals, tackle rogue landlords and reshape services to reduce the additional demands. Evidence so far shows that community leadership has been strengthened and language barriers are being overcome. For instance, there has been a 30 per cent increase in volunteers from the migrant community registering with the Boston Volunteer Centre, many have become involved with the Christmas in Boston and Boston More In Common groups and more people are attending lessons in everyday English. I was personally touched by the testimony from two women from other countries who have made their homes in Boston when they spoke at the Inclusive Boston sharing and learning event recently.

Both were pleased to declare that Boston is now home for them and they found people to be welcoming. Irena and Jurate only pointed to language difficulties, stressing that learning English was the key to opening doors and overcoming “instability” such as dependence on unskilled seasonal work at slack times. Irena, an accountant in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital city, worked hard to learn English and for her first 13 years in Boston worked for a recruitment agency. She now works for BLIC (Bringing Learning Into Communities) as a languages teacher. She said: “Boston is my home. Language is the key to everything – it opens doors and builds confidence.” And she said her daughter has just graduated from Leeds University and although she goes to Lithuania to visit grandparents, she has no plans to leave England for good. Jurate, a self-employed English language teacher, said there is now a Lithuanian population in Boston of 10,000. She said her three children now consider themselves more British than Lithuanian. She said: “We made new friends and people are friendly – we like the politeness and beautiful manners.” To meet the need for new affordable housing the council also continues to work with Registered Housing Providers, Homes England and housing developers with a total of 171 new affordable homes having been completed last year. Further new affordable properties are also currently being built on sites at Broadfield Lane, Puritan Way, and in Butterwick with more new schemes about to commence and in the development pipeline.

Advice

80th Anniversary of Citizens Advice Citizens Advice is now 80 years old and whilst society has changed dramatically in that time, there is still a very clear need for our services. Here’s a look back at what we’ve achieved in our first 80 years: The Past On 4 September 1939, the first 200 Citizens Advice Bureaux (CABs) opened. From the start, volunteers ran the service working from public buildings and private houses. Advisers were dealing with problems relating to the loss of ration books, homelessness and evacuation. They also located missing relatives and prisoners of war. Debt quickly became a key issue as household income reduced due to call-ups. In 1942 the number of bureaux peaked at 1,074 and one even operated out of a converted horse box that parked near bombed areas. In the year after VE Day many bureaux closed either because funding ceased, workers felt they had done their bit for the war effort or rents on premises increased. In 1957, the new Rent Act resulted in a big increase in enquiries and within months Citizens Advice were informing government about emerging problems. In 1960 funding from the Government for the national body was restored. In the 1970s consumer protection became a priority. In the 1980s two recessions meant a growth in poverty and enquiries increased in line with this. In the 1990s changes to the benefit system and work practices generated a large proportion of the enquiries. In 1999 the web-based advice guide was launched, which allowed people to access advice 24 hours a day. Today www.citizensadvice.org.uk is receiving over 1600 visits per minute. 2000s saw debt, housing and employment continue to be key problems that Citizens Advice Bureaux dealt with. In 2004, after a ten year campaign using

evidence from Citizens Advice service clients, the Government added an amendment to the Housing Bill to include a tenancy deposit protection scheme. The Tenant Fees Act 2019 came into effect on 1st June, banning most tenant fees in the private rented sector, saving tenants an expected £240 million a year. Currently there is a network of 280 independent local Citizens Advice across England and Wales. In 2015 Citizens Advice Boston and Citizens Advice Sleaford & District merged to form Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire. We are a local charity providing free, confidential, independent and impartial advice to anyone who needs it across the Borough of Boston and North Kesteven. We also campaign to change policy on the matters that unfairly affect people. The Present We are indebted to our volunteers who make up 75% of our workforce and who deliver advice, provide administrative assistance, research and campaign on issues that affect local residents, fundraise, hold trustee positions and provide office reception services. In the year April 2018 to March 2019 we helped 7,392 clients with 18,281 issues. The most common issues clients needed advice on were: debt, benefits, housing, employment and relationships. The Future We constantly need volunteers to support the delivery of our work across North Kesteven and Boston. There are many benefits to volunteering including: • making a difference to an individual’s life • changing the way things work for the better

• receiving highly respected training • obtaining invaluable work experience • developing new skills - which can help with employability • putting existing skills to good use • getting involved with the community • making new friends • reducing the feeling of isolation We have a range of volunteer roles including: reception duties; providing advice either face to face or by telephone, email or web chat; Trustee; Fundraiser; Research & Campaigns and Administrator. Could you be a volunteer for Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire? Have you got 3-8 hours a week spare to volunteer? Do you want to make a positive difference to the lives of others? Be part of our next 80 years and help us to help Mid Lincolnshire’s residents. We would love to hear from you.For more information contact: Sandra Stevens, Training and Recruitment Assistant sandra. stevens@citizensadvicemidlincs.org.uk or call 01529 307900.

Mini Police

The Mini Police program is now entering its second year, with 120 schools across Lincolnshire now on board. Across the county, our PCSOs have been visiting schools and talking to the new Year 5 pupils, explaining our election process and encouraging those who want to be involved to take the time to write speeches. Our PCSOs will then be holding elections whereby pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 are invited to listen to the speeches and choose which candidate they think will be the best Mini Police officer. This democratic process is really important to us, as it encourages children to develop their self-confidence, be brave and stand up and tell their classmates why they want to be involved, what they feel are important goals to aim for, and how they will overcome challenges along the way. Over the coming year, we will deliver some really important messages to not only the Mini Police, but also their classmates, and even sometimes whole schools. We will cover topics such as Anti-Bullying, Diversity and Stereotypes and Scams, along with tasks such as Bike Marking, School

Parking, Crime Prevention and Crime Scene Investigation. Each task is written in line with the National Curriculum, and is designed to actively involve the children using table-top exercises, group discussion, interactive presentations and challenges. Current Year 6 Mini Police from across the area have already completed some of these tasks, along with our Fatal 4 task in which the children learnt about

the four biggest causes of deaths and serious injuries on Lincolnshire’s roads. As part of this task, the Mini Police from several schools accompanied their PCSOs to carry out speed checks on motorists. Those found to be over the limit were stopped and offered the opportunity to speak to Mini Police regarding their speed. Mini Police interviewed drivers and educated them about road safety. Mini Police have also been invited to take part in events in the local community. Some of our Mini Police took part in village fetes and school fayres, and some also visited the ‘We’ll Meet Again’ WW2 museum in Freiston Shore where they were presented with certificates for their hard work through the year. We also hosted our Blue Light Event back in October where our Mini Police raised over £1800-00 for local charities through a ‘Mini Marathon’. We will be repeating this on September 28th in Central Park, Boston. We welcome everyone to come along and find out more about the Mini Police program. Over the coming months, we look forward to bringing you reports and pictures from the fantastic engagements that our Mini Police carry out in their communities.

Please follow us on our social media pages to keep up-to-date with where we are and what we are doing:

here seems to be a shift in awareness and thinking about our environmental impact at the minute. Vegetarianism and veganism are booming, reduction in plastic use is in the newspapers daily and everyone I meet just seems a little more tuned in to the fact that as human beings, we are pretty much destroying the planet. Did you know that disposable nappies take between 200 and 500 years to decompose, which means that every single nappy that has been used since their invention in 1948 is still rotting in a landfill site somewhere? Every single nappy your child uses from the day they are born until they are toilet trained, will still be around as a lingering memory of their life in 20 generations time. That’s an awful lot of nappies in my reckoning! Reusable or cloth nappies seem to scare a lot of families – they have visions of piles of stinking nappies piled up waiting to be washed, the endless rounds of scrubbing, boiling and hanging them out to dry. The good news is, unless you’re going to be buying terry towelling squares and giant safety pins, this is not what using modern reusable nappies looks like! Neither are they solely the choice for hippies – they are now a mainstream choice for anyone interested in doing their bit for the planet. Pretty colours, fabulous designs, poppers and Velcro all make them really easy to use, wash and dry. At around £250 for enough nappies and liners to get away with 2 extra washing loads a week – these will last you from when your child is born right through to toilet trained. The upfront cost of this

can seem steep initially, but if you work out 6-8 disposable nappies per 24 hours from birth until 4, that’s between 9000 and 11,500 nappies! Even in bulk packs and on offer, that’s a potential outlay of about £2500 for just one child. Bearing in mind you can reuse your reusables for each child… that’s some financial saving on nappies alone. Our favourite picks are: www.bumgenius.com - soft, bright colours, lots of sizes and really cute! www.bambinomio.com – patterned and fabulous, I dare you not to find a nappy you don’t fall in love with here! www.totsbots.com – abstract and psychedelic patterns for the more adventurous www.littlelambnappies.com – wider range of sizes than most so good for preemies and larger children Cloth nappies are bulkier than disposables and usually you need to buy a size larger in clothes to get them to fit over the top. You also need to consider a nappy bucket (can be purchased online, usually with your nappy stash) and how you will dry them. Bamboo nappies are very absorbent, but a nightmare to get dry in the winter as they take so long to dry. Do you want removable inners or all in ones? Poppers or Velcro? Velcro gives a tighter fit, but poppers are harder for small fingers to undo themselves. One word of warning though…once you get into them, they are very addictive!

Back to school – The Essentials The shops are full of ‘essentials’ for the new school year, and your children will have their own ideas of what they can’t do without. We look at how you can please the kids as well as the teachers without breaking the bank School uniform School uniform is something that parents assume they will buy on special offer. Like Easter eggs, if there isn’t a three-for-two promotion on school shirts, or something similar, shoppers will go elsewhere. Look out for Teflon-coated fabrics if you have a big family and want to pass school uniforms on from one child to the next.

Teflon makes fabric more playground-resistant and clothes will not stain as readily. State primary schools do not strictly enforce uniform policy and often the right coloured sweatshirt will do just as well as a more expensive, regulation one. It is the governing body of a primary school that is responsible for uniform policy but, ultimately, dress code is a voluntary agreement between the parents and the school. Hills Department Store in Spalding are

official stockists of many school uniforms for the local schools. Pens, pencils and pencil cases Classroom equipment needs to be functional, rather than fun. Teachers can be strict about what they allow in the classroom. Items like metal pencil cases are sometimes banned because they are too noisy and, when they fall onto the floor, the contents go flying. If you want to be teacher’s pet, choose a fabric pencil case, either natural or plastic, with a zip that is large enough to hold a pencil, pen, colouring crayons, ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener. Teachers often dictate what children write with usually a pencil to begin with and then a blue or black roller ball or ball point pen for older children. Make sure the rubber is big enough to work well: erasers shaped like a big pebble are ideal. For children who enjoy art a good set of first crayons will last them, something fairly chunky makes it easy to hold and hopefully will ensure they don’t snap! Stationery The choice of stationery is huge, but what do children actually need? Primary Schools all have literacy and numeracy hours, which allow children to learn at their own pace. This means kids have to do less structured, textbook work

16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

and more is produced on loose bits of paper. Why not get an A4 document box folder which is ideal for storing lots of work. Keeping a diary has gone out of fashion but an alternative is to give children a notebook. Research has shown that children are encouraged to write if they have a notebook that is theirs and in which they can write whatever they want - swear words, jokes, lists of names of people they like, love or hate. Backpacks School bags are getting bigger. The latest designs even include foldaway wheels for trundling heavy loads. Several retailers have launched new school bags with foldaway inline skating wheels and telescopic handles. While fun - this kind of mobile bag could spell trouble along a school corridor and will set you back about £40. Alternatives for heavy loads are classic backpacks, made from waterproof, rip-proof material with padded shoulder straps. For younger children, you may want to consider a fun school bag – maybe a cute animal theme, the latest action hero or their favourite cartoon character. With some thought and careful planning Back to School does not have to leave you with coppers in your purse and you can ensure your children go to school on their first day back with everything they need.

Health & Beauty Daily lives of one million Brits blighted by avoidable sight loss

Poor lifestyle choices and low uptake of eye tests leaving people in the dark Eye health experts today marked National Eye Health Week (23 – 29 Sept) with a stark warning that a million people in the UK are living with avoidable sight loss severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives – leaving them unable to do things such as drive. And worryingly, this number is forecast to rise by 30 per cent by 2030, if we don’t take action now. David Cartwright, Chair of National Eye Health Week explains: “Eyesight declines as part of the natural aging process and some cases of sight loss are still sadly unavoidable but for many simply going for regular eyes tests and adopting a healthier lifestyle could prevent sight loss having a significant impact on our lives and help people to live well for longer.” Your lifestyle can impact your eye health regardless of your genetic predisposition. Being physically active has been shown to reduce your risk of visual impairment by 58

per cent versus somebody with a sedentary lifestyle; whilst ditching a diet high in meat – more than 3.5oz daily (the equivalent of two small sausages) – could help cut your risk of cataract. Research published in the British Medical Journal reveals as many as one in five cases of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the UK’s leading cause of blindness, are caused by tobacco consumption. Making smoking directly responsible for around 120,000 cases of AMD in Britain today. There is also growing evidence to suggest that what we eat and drink can play a role in triggering the onset and progression of AMD. One research study has shown that eating just one portion of fish a week could reduce your risk of developing AMD by as much as 40 per cent, whilst, heavy drinking (three or more standard drinks per day) has been associated with the development of early AMD.

Poor uptake of regular eye tests, once every two years unless advised otherwise by your optometrist, is also a big risk factor for unnecessary sight loss as the early detection and treatment of common eye conditions like glaucoma is essential to avoid irreversible sight loss. Almost 14 million (13.8) of us fail to have regular eye tests yet your optometrist can spot signs of glaucoma years before you may

notice a change in your vision. In fact, there are an estimated 300,000 people living in the UK with undiagnosed glaucoma because they have not had a recent eye test. wDavid Cartwright concludes: “Over the next seven days National Eye Health Week will seek to inspire people to make small lifestyle changes that could make a big difference to their future eye health.”

National Eye Health Week’s six simple sight savers 1. Quit smoking. Smokers have a significantly greater risk of sight loss than non-smokers. Toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke can damage the delicate surface and the internal structure of the eye. This can lead to an increased risk of many eye conditions including AMD; nuclear cataracts; thyroid eye disease; dry eye and impaired colour vision. 2. Eat right for good sight. Most of us have no idea that what we eat can affect how well we see, however, eye-friendly nutrients found in many fruit and vegetables and fatty acids derived from fish, nuts and oils can all help protect your sight. Vitamins B and E can help protect against cataracts whilst Omega-3 fish oils help maintain healthy blood vessels inside the eye. 3. Watch your weight. More than half of

20 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

all British adults are overweight however maintaining a healthy weight helps preserve macula pigment density, which in turn, helps protect the retina against the breakdown of cells and the onset of AMD. Obesity also puts you at increased risk of diabetic retinopathy and damage to blood vessels in the eye caused by excess body weight has been linked to glaucoma. 4. Get fit. Aerobic exercise can help increase oxygen supplies to the optic nerve and lower any pressure that builds up in the eye. Reducing intraocular pressure can help control conditions such as glaucoma. LEAST 99 per cent of UVA and UVB light. Look out for a CE or British Standard or UV 400 mark when choosing your sunglasses as this

indicates they provide adequate UV protection. 6. Be screen smart. On average, we spend more than eight hours a day staring at a screen so it’s no surprise that 90 per cent of us say we experience screen fatigue – tired or irritated eyes, blurred vision, headaches and poor colour perception. Avoid eye strain by using the 20-20-20 rule, especially if you’re using a computer for long periods of time. Look 20 feet in front of you every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. And, don’t forget to book an eye test during National Eye Health Week if you haven’t had one in the last two years. For more information and advice about looking after your eyes visit www.visionmatters.org.uk.

d e r i p s n i e b Obesity in the UK is at an all-time high with two out of three adults in the UK overweight or obese. So the demand for a healthy weight loss programme that offers real solutions to individuals, families and whole communities through a supportive approach based on sound principles has never been greater.

S

limming World’s approach is based on a deep understanding of the psychology of slimmers. We believe that the burden carried by overweight people is two-fold. There is excess weight, but there is a far heavier burden to be lifted – that of guilt, self-criticism and poor selfesteem. We help people to shed the misery of excess weight, supporting members to lead happier, more fulfilling and healthier lives. Through an understanding and compassionate approach we help members to develop the motivation, confidence and mutual support they need in order to make healthy and highly effective lifestyle changes for life. It’s this deep understanding of the most effective support for slimmers that has seen Slimming World become the UK’s leading weight loss organisation. 1. Food Optimising – our no-hunger eating plan Slimming World’s eating plan, Food Optimising, turns conventional wisdom about dieting on its head. It is the most generous and flexible approach to weight loss in the world. It provides a structure or framework around which members have the freedom to choose what they eat, when they eat and how often they eat to suit every individual’s taste and lifestyle. There is little or no weighing and no calorie counting involved whatsoever. 2. Body Magic – to encourage a steady increase in activity Body Magic is Slimming World’s

unique programme designed to inspire and support members to become more active. It has been developed in collaboration with leading academic experts including Emeritus Professor Ken Fox, a government adviser on exercise. Body Magic is built on well-established psychological and scientific principles of behaviour change. It’s in line with current government exercise initiatives focused on getting people more active. 3. IMAGE Therapy – a unique and powerfully motivating support system IMAGE Therapy stands for Individual Motivation And Group Experience and is at the heart of Slimming World. Involving the whole group, IMAGE Therapy invites members to see achievements positively and in perspective. Based on compassionate and understanding support, each week members share experiences, exchange their personal solutions to common challenges, and share practical advice such as recipes and money-saving ideas. Members look ahead to potential pitfalls and, with the help of the group, are encouraged to set mini-targets and action targets to overcome these. Helping members to raise their awareness to the ways in which they sabotage their weight management success in a genuinely caring, powerfully motivating and totally non-judgemental environment is the key to empowering them to make new lifestyle changes.

Guildhall

Built in the 1390’s this building is a testament to the wealth and influence of the Guild of St Mary at a time when Boston’s power as a centre of trade was second only to London. This wonderfully preserved building, with a wealth of original features, has survived the centuries and is to be enjoyed as one of Boston’s finest visitor attractions. A wealth of stories, secrets and experiences are told and shared throughout the building including the history of the Guild of St Mary, international trade with the Hanseatic League, Henry VIII dissolve of the Guild, the foundation of the Corporation of Boston and the very famous trial and imprisonment of the Pilgrim Fathers. St. Mary’s Guild, who built the Guildhall, became the richest and most prominent of Boston’s Guilds. Its members included many of the town’s merchants and traders at a time when the town itself was enjoying great prosperity.

masses for the benefit of all members living and dead, to burn wax candles before the altar of the Blessed Virgin and to bear torches at the funerals of Guild members. A thousand loaves and a thousand herrings were to be distributed annually amongst the poor of the town. St. Mary’s was open to anyone, male or female, who was prepared to take the strict oaths of admission and pay an initial fee of 6s 8d and an annual subscription of 1s. St. Mary’s Guild played a prominent part in the rebuilding of the parish church. Its own chapel was located in a prime position inside the south aisle of the new St. Botolph’s. The interior of St. Botolph’s would have looked very different from today and the Guild’s chapel would have been screened off and have had biblical scenes and representations of the saints painted on its walls. Some features of the old chapel are, however, still evident including a carved piscina, a sedilia and an aumbry. The walls consist of two faces of brickwork

Th e Guild also appears to have founded a choir school which later developed into th e Boston Grammar School. It is mentioned in 1329 that th e school was looking for a master or tutor. Th e oldest of th e present Grammar School buildings, though, dates from 1567. Guilds like those of St. Mary’s were fundamentally religious in inspiration. It was accepted that life is but a passing phase and that Man’s true destiny lies in the world to come. One of the Guild’s foremost purposes was therefore to provide masses for the souls of their deceased members. The reply to the King’s writ of enquiry of 1389 states that St. Mary’s Guild was founded in 1260 by Andrew de Gote, Walter Tumby, Galfried de la Gotere, Robert Leland and Hugh Spayne. Its objectives included the maintaining of two priests in the parish church to say 24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

between which is a rubble core matrix. The bonding of the brickwork is characteristic of a late medieval date. Irregular shaped bricks are laid in a fairly thick mortar and in a haphazard bond consisting largely of rows of stretchers with the occasional header used to bond the two wall surfaces together. This construction pre-dated the widespread adoption of English Bond (alternating courses of headers and stretchers) and Flemish Bond (alternating headers and stretchers in each course) in England. The courses of brickwork are bonded together with a lime-based ‘common mortar’

which was originally pointed back flush with the wall face. It survives on the bedding planes and is exposed in several places on the north elevation. In the kitchen a doorway between the Guildhall which would now lead to the back of Blackfriars Theatre was blocked and may tentatively be dated to the post-Reformation period (mid sixteenth century) on functional grounds. It reflects a change in the provision of access into and the use of the ground floor which may relate to the adaptation of the building after the suppression of the religious guild of St. Marys. It is thought that this doorway allowed access for the beadsmen or perhaps was access between the Guildhall and the kitchens of Blackfriars prior to the kitchens being established in the Guildhall. Once the Guildhall became the Town Hall ongoing changes were put in place which removed or masked much of the building’s medieval fabric. Pishey Thompson, writing in 1856, claimed that “the interior of the building is so completely modernised that nothing of the original but the construction of the roof is visible”. This may be largely but not entirely true as, for example, there is evidence of blocked doorways on the south elevation. In recent years, however, we have learned a little more of its earlier life. When part of the modern ground floor was lifted for the installation of the new heating system, the remains of a series of low brick walls running across the building were discovered. These would have supported timber-framed partitions, which have long since been removed, and give some indication of how the ground floor in the medieval period would have been divided up. The same work provided answers as to how the first floor was originally reached and suggests that some of the downstairs rooms would have had finely decorated tiled floors.

Home & Property

Home Decor Trends for Autumn As the weather changes we all think about snuggling down on darker nights or maybe you fancy injecting some colour to keep you alert.

Retro Fusion

Global Essence

The first interior design trend is Retro Fusion. This nostalgic trend celebrates and reimages mid century home interiors and designs from a bygone era. The colour palettes of the 1950’s and 70’s like greens and mustards and 1920’s art décor all fits in with this trend. Clean lines and contemporary designs combined with brass and wood can be found here.

Consumers are looking for authentic handcrafted homeware products that take influence from around the globe. They want products with a layer of interest that tell a story. Rugs, wall hangings, wicker baskets and pottery are perfect for this look. Handmade imperfections are celebrated, and no two things are the same.

Nordic Retreat

Refined Glamour

The serene Scandinavian style is updated with hints of patterns and textures. Homewares following this trend are used to create a calm and quiet space. Neutral colours, bleached woods, and simplistic styles is prevalent here. Sustainability and eco-friendly products are particularly popular with this home decor trend.

This home decor trend dresses are home with an understated elegance. It’s less shiny than glamour trends we’ve seen before and more sophisticated. Opulence is the perfect word to describe this style. Fringing is and will continue into the future to be a micro-trend that fits under refined glamour.

First D R I V E

Suzuki Swift Attitude 2019 Suzuki’s Swift is a good seller for the Japanese automaker. And now it hopes the latest Swift Attitude will boost sales even higher. The special edition model is anticipated to account for up to 40 per cent of all Suzuki Swift sales in Britain during 2019 and beyond. The £14,599 Attitude is centred around the midspec SZ-T grade but includes a slightly sportier body kit, a new spoiler, a mesh grille and 16-inch alloys. However, where the standard Swift SZ-T trim houses a 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit, poke in the Attitude come from a non-turbocharged 1.2 Dualjet powerplant. This has been harvested from the basic SZ-3, driving the wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The Attitude’s engine may sound a bit lame in comparison with a turbo assisted one, but it’s still a fun, nimble hatch to drive. This is because the car only weighs 980kg and has a short wheelbase. The Swift Attitude is forgiving, too. You can chuck the little tyke into corners at the last second without any worry that the Suzuki might have a tantrum.

Indeed, the car almost enjoys being driven hard. Of course, the Attitude is not a hot-hatch, but it’s a seriously engaging supermini – if burning along twisty rural lanes is your thing. Mind you; its offthe-line performance isn’t quite so exciting. A zero to 62mph time of 11.9 seconds isn’t going to mean you’ll be changing your underwear any time soon. The Swift isn’t unacceptably underpowered, though - its light weight helps with this; you just need to stir the gears hard and keep your right foot down to feel the speed. The car is also economical, returning over 50mpg on an average run. When it comes to ride quality, you’ll find the Swift Attitude comfortable, for four-up. And even though the cabin is awash with plastics and the steering column doesn’t have reach adjustment, it offers a lot for just £14,599. Certainly, for this amount, the Suzuki is a sensible second car, or it could even serve as the main car for a small family.
