Fun-fundraising

August 2012

CDHope works in a remote and very poor area. As foundation, we aspire to achieve a lasting effect on the lives of children, and education is a good tool for breaking the vicious circle of poverty.

Financial management

CDHope wants to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged village children. This inspired the desire to open up a nursery school, a secondary school and in the future a primary school in order to provide more opportunities for the children. Time for some fundraising! Members of the Reformed Church of Kamerik have spared no effort to make possible the building of a secondary school in Chawolo, Uganda. On Queens Day, they replicated a Ugandan village with huts, offered Ugandan-themed meals and served pineapple and banana pancakes. Ugandan handicrafts were for sale and local businesses offered prizes for a raffle sale. Fun and original!

CHILD SPONSORSHIP A number of orphaned children were already sponsored, and we are thrilled at how the number of sponsors has increased since July 2011. As we write this, 9 orphaned children are being sponsored, as well as the pastor, two widows and their families and 28 village children: 9 for the nursery school, 17 for the primary school and one for the secondary school. There is so much need and the financial means are limited. But the townspeople of Kamerik would not take no for an answer and sprung into action. Their efforts ultimately yielded over € 28,000, enough to build 3 classrooms! Two groups of Kamerik volunteers flew out to Chawolo at their own expense to dig and pour the foundations with the help of a local entrepreneur.

Thank you Kamerik for all the hard work! The running of secondary school will be financed by child sponsorship and by the children’s parents, according to their means.

Trip report from the De Lange family We, Ton and Ilse de Lange and our children Daniëlle (14), Steven (12) and Joshua (9), spent two weeks in Chawolo this past July. It was our first time travelling by airplane as a family. We experienced some stress beforehand, but all five of us really enjoyed it and want to go back again. We had such a good time with our friends Tim, Wilma, Eugene and Jaimie, as well as with the CDHope children and staff, the village children and the rest of the locals in Chawolo. The last few months were a busy time – with the help of friends and sponsors we filled up five extra suitcases with materials for the children of Chawolo: duplo for the nursery school, toys, craft materials, t-shirts, footballs, bracelets, balloons and bubble blowing kits. It was such a pleasure to see how even a 15 year old enjoyed receiving a balloon. To mark the fifth anniversary of CDHope in Uganda, the home committee solicited your contributions to resolve

the electr ic ity supply problems for the Omallas. For some time, they had been experiencing a lot of frustration with failing generators and batteries and the time lost trying to get them fixed. Tim and Wilma knew nothing about this anniversary gift and accepted the € 4,000 cheque with tears in their eyes. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this possible!

Ton did all kinds of jobs and repairs. He searched for the cause of the short-circuits in Tim and Wilma’s house and also tiled their bathroom. Thanks to the projector provided by AENC Group, we were able to show the children an inspiring movie about children in Thailand who really wanted to play football but could not

because they lived in a water village. We tried to encourage the children to think in terms of opportunities. Steven and Joshua played games and football with the CD Hope and village children. They built Duplo structures with the younger children. Daniëlle and Ilse made bracelets, told stories, painted nails, played badminton and also just hung out. We were often followed by a crowd of children whenever we made our way from the guest house towards the children’s house. It felt good to see all these cheerful, enthusiastic kids. Ton took pictures of the everyday life in Chawolo and of the children who are waiting to be sponsored. And of course we spent time together with Tim and Wilma, sharing about what gives us energy and what brings us challenges and frustrations.

Our respect and admiration for Tim and Wilma grew, seeing how, from the middle of nowhere, they have managed to make such good contacts and win the trust of the locals. Life there is so different from life in The Netherlands. Thanks to everyone we met, we have brought a treasure chest of life lessons home with us. And it motivates us even more to promote CDHope in The Netherlands.

Fifth anniversary of Child’s Destiny of Hope in Uganda! It was five years ago on July 12th 2007, that the Omalla family arrived in Uganda and embarked on the task of starting up CDHope. They began with one orphaned child and since then they have impacted 30 sponsored children and 250 village children and their families. We are thankful to Tim, Wilma, Eugene and Jaimie that they have had the courage and the love required to carry out this work for the last five years. The next five years are now underway and we look forward to seeing how the impact keeps growing!
