Giving to Children’s Colorado in 2011

SPRING 2012

Children’s Hospital Colorado has drawn from a rich history of community support for more than a century. Over time, the hospital has developed a constellation of strengths that sets us apart, positioning us to seize tremendous new opportunities that lie ahead and provide greater care for the children of our community and beyond. In every area, innovation in research, technology and our approach to care benefits Children’s Colorado patients and helps us focus on the new treatments and cures that lie ahead. As we begin planning our next philanthropic campaign, we will harness gathering momentum to transform children’s health. Children’s Colorado has consistently strong support from our philanthropic community. Even as the economy continued to fluctuate in 2011, almost 38,000 donors entrusted (Continued on page 3)

Children’s Colorado

Dear

friends,

We believe that the children who need Children’s Hospital Colorado deserve the best care our institution can provide. Our role at the Foundation is to harness community support for the opportunities in children’s healthcare that lie ahead. Your partnership is essential, and even pivotal, in making these opportunities a reality. Your gifts over the past year have made a real difference for the children and families we serve. We hear constantly that this hospital is a place where families can feel secure, confident and supported by world-class teams of caring doctors, nurses and staff. Thank you for the many ways you support the hospital’s commitment to the highest-quality care. Whether you make an individual donation to a program you care about, or you ride and fundraise for the Courage Classic, or you attend our annual Gala, your generosity touches the lives of each child and family we treat. Thank you, again, for joining us to make the hope for healthier childhoods a reality today. In appreciation,

Steve Winesett President and CEO Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation

From July 21 to 23, more than 2,000 riders will take to the gorgeous mountains of Summit County again this year for Courage Classic, one of Colorado’s best-supported rides for a good cause.

For more information about becoming a corporate partner, please contact Emily McNellis, emcnellis@childrenscolorado foundation.org or 720.777.1769.

Thanks to the partnership of presenting corporate partner Prologis, even more of the community’s contributions will be used where they are needed most. Corporate partners underwrite much of the cost of putting on a large and complex event, allowing more of the funds raised to support the patients and families we serve. Now in its 23rd year, Courage Classic riders, teams, volunteers and partners come together each summer to support Children’s Hospital Colorado. Teams and riders for this year’s tour are already gearing up for what promises to be a great ride. This summer, as in past years, the tour will be based out of Copper Mountain and will cover 157 miles of high altitude passes and beautiful roadways, including a climb up Vail Pass and a cruise down the bike path from Copper Mountain into Dillon. Prologis is the leading global provider of industrial real estate, offering customers approximately 584 million square feet of distribution space in markets across the Americas, Europe and Asia. The company leases its 3,100 industrial facilities in 22 countries to enterprises with large-scale distribution needs. Prologis’ operational headquarters in Denver employs 250 people and is proud to support the Courage Classic for a third year with a team of riders from around the world.

Building Momentum:

Giving to Children’s Colorado in 2011

(Continued from page 1) us with more than $32.9 million in gifts to benefit the children and families we serve.

Individual support

We are grateful for the incredibly impactful gifts we received last year. Here are a few examples: •A leadership gift from Campaign Organizing Committee Chair Laura Barton •A gift from J.T. Tai & Company, Inc. established an endowment supporting the Center for Gait and Movement Analysis (CGMA) research and education •A gift from The Melvin and Elaine Wolf Foundation and Sandy Wolf established an endowed chair for a new fetal surgeon •A gift from the Asher family created an endowed chair for cystic fibrosis; an area where significant strides are being made • T he Vollbracht family gift established The Leslie and William Vollbracht Family Chair in Stress and Anxiety Disorders • T he Colorado Health Foundation gift supported obesity prevention programs for 5th graders •A gift from The Sean McCauley Hope Foundation supported the Wellness Program in our Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders

National leaders

Our donors are often motivated and inspired to give by Children’s Colorado’s dedicated doctors and caregivers. Dr. Timothy Crombleholme, a pioneer in the new field of fetal surgery, joined the Children’s Colorado team as the new Surgeon-in-Chief and Ponzio Family Chair for the Surgeon-in-Chief in 2011. Already, he is performing complex operations few physicians in the world offer, including

in-utero fetal laser surgery, to correct potentially fatal conditions like twin-twin transfusion syndrome.

Visionary boards

Community events

Groups and individuals participated with enthusiasm in a wide range of events that raised millions for the hospital in 2011.

The hospital and Foundation boards support physicians like Dr. Crombleholme. Visionary, dedicated and deeply trusted, our leadership provides a “can do” attitude that is palpable throughout the hospital, supporting an environment to create breakthroughs in children’s care now, and setting the stage for many more breakthroughs in the future.

Endowed funds

With 29 endowed chairs and 80 endowed funds, Children’s Colorado is increasingly poised to offer our physician-scientists the resources they need to create breakthroughs for children and families.

Courage Classic for Children’s Colorado hosted over 2,000 riders and raised $2.3 million for children and families.

Giving societies

One of several ways we recognize donors to Children’s Colorado is through giving societies, and the Charles C. Gates Society embodies the reach, generosity and support behind Children’s Colorado and includes those who have made gifts of $1 million or more over their lifetimes. Charles C. Gates himself believed deeply in the promise of our new hospital and the Anschutz Medical Campus. In the past year, we celebrated a milestone: the 100th gift of over a million dollars, and therefore 100th member of the Gates Society. You can read about the vision and leadership of the Asher family, who made that gift, on page 5. Tremendous possibilities are within our reach. At Children’s Colorado, we are inspired by the potential that lies ahead and we are grateful to our generous philanthropic community for helping us reach that potential.

At the 34th annual Gala hosted by George and Carol Solich, guests were entertained by Brian Regan and the Starlight Experience Dance Band. The event raised $1.86 million, exceeding our goal of $1.6 million.

Asher Family Chair for Cystic Fibrosis

Dr. Frank Accurso, holder of the Asher Family Chair for Cystic Fibrosis, is Head of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Section of Pulmonology, Associate Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center, Medical Director of the Core Laboratory at the Children’s Hospital Colorado Clinical Translation Research Center and Professor of Pediatrics at University of Colorado.

February 13 heralded the addition of a newly endowed chair to Children’s Hospital Colorado. Marking a culminating event in a nearly 32-year career with Children’s Colorado, Dr. Frank Accurso was named inaugural chairholder of the Asher Family Chair for Cystic Fibrosis. The evening celebrated the outstanding efforts of Dr. Accurso and Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Breathing Institute in the field of cystic fibrosis (CF) research and treatment. “The significance of this chair is that it beautifully highlights and honors Dr. Accurso’s outstanding lifetime commitment to CF and also ensures that this work is going to be carried forth by a team that shares his commitment,” said Mike Asher. “Frank is a superstar,” said Dr. Jim Shmerling, President and CEO of Children’s Hospital Colorado. “He is internationally known for his work in newborn screening and early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. Dr. Accurso exemplifies what a pediatric hospital is all about.” The Asher Family Chair, one of 29 at Children’s Colorado, was established by the contributions of the Asher family and several community families to ensure continued support of cystic fibrosis clinical and research programs.

Breathing new life into training

for pulmonary specialists

The Breathing Institute at Children’s Colorado takes several things seriously: patient care, research, education – and giving back. These opportunities have come together under a new Breathing Institute initiative: a fellowship program endowed by Pulmonary Department medical staff. Building on the efforts initiated by Dr. Jeff Wagener of Children’s Colorado's Pulmonary Department nearly 15 years ago, Drs. Robin Deterding and Vivek Balasubramaniam called on their fellow faculty members to participate in section-wide medical staff giving in 2011 to develop a fellowship support fund. Their call was successful. One hundred percent of Breathing Institute faculty have pledged or given, contributing more than $292,500 in gifts toward the goal of eventually establishing a fully-funded endowed 4 Giving To Children’s • Spring 2012

fellowship in the Breathing Institute at Children’s Colorado. “This is a first for Children’s Colorado,” says Dr. Deterding. “The potential of having a fellowship funded by medical staff shows that the pulmonary section is making a strong commitment to the training of future pediatric pulmonologists.” As Children’s Colorado has provided a training home for all but one pediatric pulmonologist in the Rocky Mountain region, it is easy to see why such a fellowship would be so important to furthering the Breathing Institute’s

educational mission. “We are considered one of the oldest and most respected training programs in the country,” said Dr. Deterding. “In order to train academic researchers, we need flexibility in training dollars.” Pediatric Pulmonology fellowships are currently funded by a 30-year-old NIH training grant, currently managed by Dr. Steve Abman, one of the longest running grants in the country. The creation of this endowment will help secure the funds necessary to continue to foster a program noted for its academic and clinical excellence.

Hope for a cure The Charles C. Gates Society’s

100th member extraordinary ongoing generosity, Kalydeco helps researchers see the way forward to a cure. Though they do not seek the spotlight, Mike and Carolyn Asher have played a lead role in the fight to cure CF. By spotlighting those positioned to make breakthroughs, change lives and bring healing, the perpetual CF clinical and research program that they have funded will help CF patients today and into the future.

It is no exaggeration to say that Mike and Carolyn Asher have changed the future for kids with cystic fibrosis (CF). People living with cystic fibrosis (CF) undergo rigorous daily therapy to breathe, digest food and grow, processes most people don’t even think about. An inherited genetic disease, CF causes the body to create thick, sticky mucous, impeding lung function and interfering with digestion. Children’s Colorado cares for more than 500 children, adolescents and young adults with CF. Our center is vibrant and successful due to a partnership between caregivers, families, and supporters like Mike and Carolyn Asher, who are committed to treating and healing CF patients. Over the years, three generations of the Asher family have contributed to CF treatment and research at Children’s Colorado. In 2011, Mike and Carolyn Asher decided that the time was right for the very first endowed chair in CF here at the hospital, and they could think of no one better to accept this honor than Dr. Frank Accurso.

With the advent of the Asher Family Chair for Cystic Fibrosis, they have created a steady stream of income that will enable the CF team at Children’s Colorado to further accelerate the pace of progress toward a cure. “These are hopeful days in the CF community,” said Mike. In the past few years, advances in the treatment of CF have included promising new drug therapies. In January of this year, the FDA approved the drug Kalydeco, which addresses a root cause of CF: a faulty protein. Lessons learned through Kalydeco treatment will help physician-scientists develop additional personalized treatments and cures for those with CF. Developed in part through the Asher family’s

The Ashers are, additionally, the 100th member of the Charles C. Gates Society, which recognizes donors who have contributed $1 million or more to Children’s Colorado over the course of their lifetimes. It is fitting that a couple whose vision matches that of Charles C. Gates are the Gates Society’s 100th member. Their gift will have an extraordinary impact on families not just in our region, but around the world.

Estate planning, a thoughtful way to help children’s health For more information

Your will is not just a valuable right, it is an opportunity to make personal choices about what happens with your estate after your lifetime. Wills offer many benefits: they allow you to designate beneficiaries of your personal items and property – including real estate, bank accounts and stocks and bonds; they can help your heirs by reducing estate taxes to ensure that they receive more; and wills can ensure that any gifts to organizations like Children’s Hospital Colorado – also known as bequests – are executed and distributed according to your priorities and wishes. Ms. Dorothy Powell, who lived in the Denver area before retiring to New Cambria, Missouri, was a loyal annual donor to Children’s Colorado. Ms. Powell did make use of estate planning to express her wishes about her estate’s distribution, and Children’s Colorado Foundation was grateful to be among the recipients of her giving after she passed away.

about Estate Planning to benefit Children’s Hospital Colorado, please contact Kellie Fischer, Vice President of Planned and Principal Giving, at 720.777.1751 or kfischer@childrenscolorado foundation.org

In June 1983, Ms. Powell made her first small gift to Children’s Colorado. Her generosity continued for many years. At the age of 104, she passed away, and in her will, designated Children’s Colorado as the recipient of $100,000. The six-figure estate gift benefited the Children’s Fund for Children’s Colorado and will be used to support children’s healthcare now, and for generations to come. Children’s Colorado depends on gifts from thoughtful donors to continue to provide the best care for children and their families. Estate planning is one of the easiest ways to make a significant difference for those we treat.

The Sean McCauley

Hope Fund carries a legacy forward When Sean was diagnosed at 10 months old with an aggressive and rare malignant brain tumor on November 29, 2000, life as the McCauley family knew it changed forever. How can any family plan for something like this? John and Dani were in a fight for their child’s life. Many times during Sean’s difficult treatment, they were told not to have too much hope. They were even told it may be best to take Sean home and prepare for the worst. “I could live with the idea that Sean might die,” said Dani, “but I couldn’t live with the idea that we shouldn’t try to save him.” His earth-shaking diagnosis led them to seek second, third and fourth opinions. They found a glimmer of hope in Boston with an experimental treatment option. They sold their home and moved to the East Coast to try it out. It wasn’t until Sean’s treatment was complete and they began to piece their new life together, that they started to process their journey. They began to realize that there is no such thing as false hope – and they wanted to get the message out to other families. “If hope got us out of bed to advocate for his best possible outcome, then it could never be false,” said Dani. John and Dani also knew that they could help others through their firsthand knowledge of the practical challenges that face a family during a cancer fight. In September 2001, they founded The Sean McCauley Hope Foundation. In 10 years, Sean’s Hope raised over $1 million dollars to support families living with pediatric cancer in many ways, with care packages for newly diagnosed families, emergency financial assistance, Spanish-

Children’s Colorado understands this, and provides support and programming for the entire family.” speaking support programs, and child life and recreation therapy programs. As the foundation marked its 10th anniversary, the McCauley’s own journey encountered a “fork in the road.” The realities of being a family with a special needs child had to take precedence. After much soul searching and discussion with their family, community of Sean’s Hope supporters and Children’s Colorado Foundation, they decided to entrust the Foundation with the creation of The Sean McCauley Hope Fund.

Above: Sean and his family. Right: Beads of Hope raise money for Sean's Hope Fund.

The fund will support and sustain the Wellness Program at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, which embodies everything Sean’s Hope cared about as an organization for the past decade. The Wellness Program offers support to pediatric cancer families in every way imaginable. “Creating this endowment felt like an extension of our values and passion. Every single penny will be used for families and make a difference,” Dani said. “Children’s Colorado is special. We’ve been in children’s hospitals all over the country and talked to doctors around the world. I believe that we have a really unique team and support system here for our children and the whole family. When a child is diagnosed, the whole family is affected. Children’s Colorado understands this, and provides support and programming for the entire family. Our endowment will help this critical mission in perpetuity.”

Brother and sister, Juan and Diana were both seriously injured when a fire destroyed their home. Rather than allow this experience hold them back, they have actively worked with Children’s Colorado to recover quickly. Now they promote fire safety and awareness, working with the fire department that helped save their lives. Janessa had her first surgery at 6 months old. Diagnosed with biliary atresia, Janessa ultimately wound up needing a full liver transplant less than a year later. Now a healthy 10-year-old, Janessa returns to Children’s Colorado not only for follow up, but to visit and inspire those children still working on getting better.

Matt was born with a dislocated hip and severe knee deformity, requiring significant amounts of surgery and intensive care from a very young age. Undeterred by treatments he must continue to undergo, Matt now regularly volunteers at community organizations, including Children’s Colorado.

Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at 5 years old, Olivia has spent lengthy amounts of time at Children’s Colorado combating her disease. Thanks to the long-term care provided by the oncology team at Children’s Colorado, Olivia is now able to fully enjoy all of her favorite activities.

Eleven-year-old Riley was playing softball when she began experiencing severe pain in her back. By the end of the day, she could no longer feel her legs. Although a rare condition called acute transverse myelitis has limited Riley’s ability to walk, it has not taken her enthusiasm for living.

Christina has spent a lifetime at Children’s Colorado, partnering with the Breathing Institute to combat her extremely severe asthma and allergies. This long-term partnership has enabled Christina to be active in improving her own health, allowing for her passion of writing and singing songs to flourish.

In the past year... Children’s Hospital Colorado once again ranked among the nation’s top pediatric hospitals in U.S. News & World Report. To meet the growing needs of children and families around our seven-state region, Children’s Colorado continues to expand physically – through the main hospital’s East Tower construction project and Network of Care growth – as well as through a variety of essential services and programs. Children’s Colorado doctors and faculty are winning awards and accolades for their outstanding care, our advocacy programs are achieving national recognition for making children’s lives safer, and Children’s Colorado’s commitment to research is expanding awareness of the groundbreaking studies taking place on the Anschutz Medical Campus each day. We have much to celebrate as we reflect on the past year. Children’s Colorado could not have achieved so much without the generous support of each individual, foundation and corporation who gave to the hospital between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2011. Thank you!

A generous philanthropist, Mr. Gates believed in transformational giving as an investment in a community and a cause. He was a longtime supporter of the hospital, and until his death in 2005 he served as honorary chair of The Imagine the Miracles Campaign for The Children’s Hospital. Over the years, the entire Gates family has given generously of both their time and treasure. Annual donors of $10,000 or more and Children’s Circle of Care Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation gratefully acknowledges donors who made gifts of $10,000 or more and those who qualify for membership in Children’s Circle of Care. In 1995, Children’s Hospital Colorado joined other leading pediatric hospitals across the United States and Canada to form Children’s Circle of Care (CCC). By recognizing individuals, family foundations and private corporations giving $10,000 or more annually, CCC highlights the role of philanthropy in assuring excellence in pediatric healthcare. In 2011, local members contributed nearly $16 million to Children’s Colorado. Endowed Chairs and Endowed Funds Children’s Hospital Colorado is indebted to the individuals who establish endowed chairs and funds— the backbone of any healthy institution. These generous individuals ensure that Children’s Colorado has the perpetual capacity to innovate new treatments and cures while providing top-notch care in a family-centered environment. Because the interest earned on these funds is available year after year, children and families will benefit long after the initial gift is made. We gratefully recognize donors who have contributed $250,000 or more to an endowed chair and donors who have contributed $10,000 or more to an endowed fund.
