Introduction and Background Fiona McKenzie

Paul Mathieson

Centrestage was opened in Kilmarnock in 2006 by Fiona McKenzie and Paul Mathieson without public or grant funding and operates with the ethos that anyone – regardless of age, ability, background or experience – can gain life changing social benefits through active participation in the arts, particularly music, drama and dance. Centrestage was formed as a social enterprise to add a new dimension to compliment the range and diversity of community activities offered within Ayrshire, with the OSCR registered charity, Centrestage Communities Ltd (SC039611) representing the interests of participants. Prior to Centrestage, the premises at James Little Street were occupied by a Tool and Equipment Hire company. When Centrestage was established in 2005, the premises were just a shell and bore no resemblance to the busy, thriving space where thousands of the community attend every year. Centrestage is completely purpose built with a 307-seat auditorium, stage, dance studio and office space. Over 850 members of the community aged from 6 months to over 90 years participate in mainstream and outreach activities every week, with further numbers attending the performances staged in the auditorium. Members come, in the main, from all areas of Ayrshire, from as far afield as Girvan, West Kilbride and Dalmellington. However, many also travel from East Renfrew, Dunbartonshire, Glasgow and beyond.

@CentrestageMT

All classes, activities and projects are focused on leadership and teambuilding through the arts and in building a strong sense of community both within our organisation and in the wider community. Centrestage currently employs 24 members of staff on a full or part time basis, with all team members volunteering additional hours far beyond those they are contracted to deliver. In addition to core team members, we have a large volunteer team numbering 80+ who contribute a vast amount of time and talent to the organisation.

Participant numbers in 2012 included over 500 children and young people aged 6 months to 16 years; over 50 children and adults with a wide range of additional support needs, learning and physical disabilities; over 70 adults aged 60-95 years; over 30 male prisoners within HMP Kilmarnock; with the remainder being adults aged 16-59 years from throughout Ayrshire and beyond. All attend activities at least once a week, paying as small a fee as possible to maximise access to courses. The exceptions to this are participants within our outreach projects where project funding is continually being sought to allow them to expand and enable even greater participation from vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. Revenue generated from all productions and outreach projects is reinvested to sustain the social ethos of Centrestage. We have never received external core funding to cover our running costs and rely on the loyalty of our participants and audience patrons to generate internal revenue. 7

Introduction and Background All of our projects have long-term aims and are intended to be resilient and sustainable, with the potential to make transformational societal change. Through working with many of the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups within our community, the Centrestage Communities team aims to help them improve their own lives by providing the tools of confidence, teamwork, pride and aspiration that can make this possible, helping them to shape their journey and not assuming that their destination is inevitable. We are committed to enabling everyone to engage with a sense of belonging to a wider community and to break down the barriers that prevent achievement. We develop programmes, partnerships and collaborations that will have a positive impact on the lives of members of our community. We want Centrestage to be seen as a place where leadership, educational and entrepreneurial opportunities are available. By consistently listening and providing relevant resources, we aim to build strong trust and relationships and to identify what our members need in order to continue to learn and grow. We will always work to support and develop leadership that is connected to the community at all levels of our organisation. We believe that by focusing on the strengths of our leaders and volunteers, we create an environment that allows everyone to believe in and attain their own potential.

10

facebook.com/centrestage

@CentrestageMT

Our goal, despite the high standards achieved by participants, is not to promise anyone a career in the arts industry. Instead, we aspire to deliver and develop skills that will be welcomed in all industries. We aim to give our members an experience of what they can create, a sense of their own value and awareness of new possibilities for their own lives and the influence they can have on others. We believe that young people are not a problem to be solved but a vital part of the community and we passionately believe in the leadership potential and ability of youth. The Centrestage team are constantly monitoring young people in our classes to identify those who show the potential to lead the next generation of Centrestage, building on personal strengths, whether as part of the teaching team, technical team, administrative team or simply to act as excellent ambassadors for the organisation. The junior leaders working under the supervision of senior team members are young people just a few steps further down the road who have made a significant commitment to those following them. Most importantly, all participants are valued as individuals within the community. To help build an energetic, inclusive society is our greatest aspiration.

OUR CLASSES

Join a Class To view the current dates and times of all our classes, please visit our website at www.centrestagemusictheatre.org.uk or call 01563 551505. New members of any age can join Centrestage at any point in the year; there is no need to wait until a new term begins.

Show Schedules Scheduling show dates takes a great deal of time and takes into consideration other potential demands on participants and family members’ lives. Our class showcases are held in May and November, avoiding in the main, the exam season and school holiday periods. Full productions for younger classes are scheduled to fall on a bank holiday weekend to allow the young participants a day to recharge. Productions for older students are scheduled to avoid school and university exam diets. Whilst we hold extra rehearsals for our musicals, there is no pressure for participants to attend and there is no additional charge for these extra rehearsals.

Centrestage Uniform To establish a sense of identity, our only requirement is that participants of school age wear a Centrestage T-shirt during classes. There is no obligation to purchase additional clothing or footwear. 15

OUR CLASSES

Music Theatre Centrestage offers music theatre classes for all ages, making up a large proportion of our class timetable. In addition to our large scale productions, all music theatre classes work towards regular class showcases throughout the year, which give each participant the opportunity to perform solo regardless of age, background or experience. There is no audition to join any class. Each of our Music Theatre classes have the opportunity to stage at least one full musical per year. Recent productions have included The Witches of Eastwick, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Anything Goes, Chess, Beauty and the Beast, High School Musical, Aladdin, Mulan, Rent, A Christmas Carol and Les Miserables. Participating in these productions instils all company members – on and off stage – with confidence, self-belief and continuous improvement from an early age as they grow and develop, not only as performers, but in their personal development as individuals. Each Music Theatre company, regardless of age, stages their own fully cast musical at a time most appropriate to them in the annual production calendar. 16

facebook.com/centrestage

@CentrestageMT

However, each December, we stage our annual production of the musical, A Christmas Carol, which involves a cross-generational company from Primary 1 to Senior Music Theatre, creating a truly festive family experience. Casting these productions is one of the most challenging and time consuming aspects of our curriculum. All class members will always be part of the production and do not have to audition unless they want to be considered for a principal role. The audition process varies dependent on the age of the company but, in all cases, a large auditioning panel will spend many volunteer hours deliberating the best possible casting for the show. In most cases, many shows will be double-cast to maximise the chance of participants taking a principal part. The feelings of the individual company members – particularly the younger groups – are paramount and the disappointment that inevitably takes place after a cast is announced is carefully managed by all production team members. However, each cast quickly realises that company members are able to participate in far more of the show’s large production numbers and set pieces than most principal characters and come to learn that being an individual within the company, regardless of role, is an equal part of the experience. It is a valuable lesson for all to realise that, despite preparing thoroughly, working hard within the team and delivering a really strong audition, the end result is not what you would hope for but it is the best thing for the show, the team and ultimately the individual. This difficult life lesson is delivered in a positive way by a team who care about the feelings of the individuals concerned.

OUR CLASSES

In addition, participants develop transferable life skills, such as teamwork and time management and demonstrate commitment to something they truly enjoy, skills which they are then able to utilise in everyday life. Through auditioning and performing, company members are better prepared for presentations, job interviews and public speaking, helping to nurture and build confidence and self-esteem from an early age. In our music theatre classes, participants work with and meet people with whom previously, they may never have been in contact. However, the shared interest of music serves as a “stepping stone in connecting participants, enabling them to develop lifelong skills as they interact with individuals from all walks of life. All participants work together to achieve shared outcomes, engaging in goal setting, shared learning, teamwork and leadership, whilst being continuously motivated. We aim to inspire and nurture all our participants, not only as performers but also in their personal development, so that as they grow and develop, they have the skills that can assist them as they make their own life choices. 18

OUR CLASSES

Dance Dance is a major part of the curriculum at Centrestage, with a wide range of styles and classes being offered to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. There are a large range of classes and styles available including street dance, lyrical hip hop, tap, street tap, Broadway, world dance, boys’ street dance and contemporary styles. The main emphasis within our dance classes is the development of confidence and performance skills, with all classes performing in at least two dance showcases annually. Our dancers also regularly perform at other events, both within Centrestage and in the wider community. Another unique aspect of dance at Centrestage is that our classes are all involved in annual full-scale dance productions and original devised performances. Over the past few years, our troupe members have had the opportunity to be involved in dance-led inter-disciplinary projects and workshops, including material based on Willy Wonka (2010), Into the Hoods (2010), Tales from the Toybox (2011), Shoes (2011), An Ogre’s Tale (2012), Moulin Rouge (2012) and Some Like it Hip Hop (2012).

24

@CentrestageMT

Centrestage currently has a range of dance troupes including Hiplash, our senior girls’ troupe; Fearless, our senior boys’ troupe; Jump, our mixed troupe; and Flip Hop, our junior girls’ troupe. Troupe members are selected from our dance classes and these participants are not only talented but exemplify the values of Centrestage and can represent these values both within and outside the organisation, acting as great ambassadors. The Centrestage dance troupes also participate in dance festivals and competitions throughout Scotland, including the UDO Scottish Championships, where both troupes subsequently qualified for the 2012 World Dance Championships. Dance class participants also have the opportunity when appropriate to work towards examination in some styles, with students being able to gain qualifications with the British Association of Teachers of Dancing. Our troupes also participate at the Go Dance Festival at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow and participating in such a prestigious national dance event is a fantastic experience for our dancers. In the future, we hope to develop further dance troupes and to expand our current provision to encompass even more diverse styles. 25

OUR CLASSES

Technical Theatre None of our shows could happen without the time, talent and dedication of the members of our Technical Theatre classes. This class develops knowledge of the theatre and its technology, including sound, lighting, set design and set building. Participants learn theory concepts and practical skills as they work towards assisting the technical crew in live Centrestage performances.

Film & Media Crews These teams learn techniques associated with high definition filming and editing and work alongside their leaders to create Front of House promotional films, production DVDs, rehearsal footage for monitoring and evaluation of classes and general promotional materials. Equipment used currently includes a Sony professional HXR AVC camera with HD and a fully digital MacBook with Final Cut, enabling the participants to learn on industry standard equipment.

Pre-School We believe that children are never too young to start gaining the social benefits of active participation in the arts. Teeny Talent is aimed at children aged from 2-4 years and parents can elect to remain with their little ones or enjoy some time to themselves as the children explore their creativity through music, storytelling, movement and arts and crafts in a fun, exciting and nurturing environment. Wriggle & Rhyme is our class for babies and toddlers aged from birth to 2 years where children and parents sing and play together in a creative and social atmosphere. Both Teeny Talent and Wriggle & Rhyme run at various times during week days and children can come to any or all sessions without pre-booking.

Fitness @ CS There are a range of adult fitness-based classes, including Zumba Fitness速 and Adult Tap Fit at Centrestage. There are various sessions throughout the week, all of which run without pre-booking and anyone can drop in at any time.

OUR OUTREACH PROJECTS

Musical Generations Musical Generations is our cross-generational project that demonstrates that we are never too young or too old to learn from each other. Musical Generations aims to increase contact and understanding between all generations and provides a friendly, positive and creative way to spend an afternoon for participants of all ages. The Centrestage lead team has worked alongside CS junior leaders and volunteers of all ages in a local care home developing the pilot project. Now, thanks to sponsorship from GlaxoSmithKline and Change Fund, from August 2012-2013 this project has been able to be expanded and will be run as a weekly community activity on Monday afternoons within Centrestage. All elderly members of the community, whether living independently, or within supported accommodation or any other care setting is welcome to attend, at no cost to themselves. This social afternoon will include a varied mix of music, movement, conversations and refreshments with volunteers of all ages working alongside the Centrestage team. It is hoped that memories will be revisited and friendships will be rekindled as groups and individuals from across Ayrshire come together for companionship, entertainment and community in a new, energetic and positive setting. We actively encourage carers and family members to come along and enjoy being a valued part of the afternoon. 30

facebook.com/centrestage

@CentrestageMT

Good communication is the key to unlocking memories and improving quality of life and by being positive and focusing on what people can still do and be, regardless of age, we anticipate many shared moments of discovery and enjoyment. Performances by Centrestage members will also play a regular part in the programme of activities and we hope that many individuals and groups will want to be part of this innovative project. As our communities face the challenges associated with a growing elderly population, it is important for us to find new methods of valuing the life experiences of older members of our society and make them relevant, particularly to younger generations. For many elderly people, who perhaps have a decreased ability to communicate through language, music can play a key therapeutic role and allow them to regain their connection with others. Through interacting with members of the community of all ages who are not necessarily carers or family members and by engaging in music, dance and social interaction, participants feel uplifted physically, socially and psychologically and through their conversations, have the opportunity to regularly reflect positively on their lives whilst building new relationships. Any individual or agency wishing further information should contact us on 01563 551505 or e-mail enquiries@centrestagemusictheatre.co.uk. 31

OUR PROJECTS

Connect Our Connect project is delivered to children and young people who find difficulty in engaging with the mainstream school system and aims to give them the tools to shape their own destiny, teaching them to take responsibility for their own actions and choices. We never assume that a negative destination is inevitable. Connect allows children and young people to develop their own self-belief and instils a conviction that they can individually make a fundamental change to their lives, regardless of their background. By providing this intervention, we create new opportunities, broaden horizons and empower children and young people from vulnerable situations to believe that, through their own actions and efforts, they can make a positive contribution to their communities and to society as a whole. Nothing guarantees that a young person will see new possibilities but we aim to create the conditions where that choice is more likely and that they see themselves first as having value within our community, then within wider society. By focusing on the assets that each young person already has but may not be aware of, we gradually build their confidence, using music and the arts as the conduit to a more positive way of thinking and believing in themselves.

32

facebook.com/centrestage

@CentrestageMT

Projects delivered at Centrestage on behalf of local authorities and other agencies have quickly and successfully engaged hundreds of teenagers, addressing the root causes of disengagement and low attainment. Every programme is developed to address the unique needs of each individual and group and many young people who had no experience of such activities before participation in the Connect project are now regular members of Centrestage activities, with some now acting as junior leaders. The ultimate aim of this project is to allow children and young people to start the Centrestage Leadership Programme from a far earlier age than is standard practice. Project and partnership funding is continually being sought to further develop this strategy.

OUR PROJECTS

Reconnect Since launching the pilot Reconnect project within HMP Kilmarnock in 2010 and achieving project funding from The Robertson Trust, Centrestage has had regular weekly presence within the education department at Bowhouse Prison. The workshop has continued to grow and develop successfully since those early days and thanks to continued funding from The Robertson Trust, we are committed to developing the project meaningfully over the coming years. The Centrestage team currently provides weekly workshops within the prison, with regular showcases of work, including art, music, song writing, creative writing and poetry taking place within the prison, to peers, prison staff and other outside agencies. Reconnect is modelled on our in-house Boys2Men group and the project uses an inclusive creative process to develop the skills, confidence and personal development of each man. Emphasis is placed on enabling each participant to take part at a level at which they are comfortable. New members of the group are supported and included as they also learn to take confidence in their ability to participate in a new activity. In simple terms, by trying a new activity, the potential for change is unlocked. Reconnect is a proactive project that is intended to make a difference, not only to the lives of individual prisoners but to make a difference to the community as a whole. 34

facebook.com/centrestage

@CentrestageMT

As the Reconnect project expands to include through-care, our aim is to help enable these men, who have little hope or expectation of being allowed to be integrated back into the community, to gain the social and leadership skills required on release in order to allow them to create new destinations on their journeys through education, employment and potentially self-employment. The Reconnect project provides innovative and effective ways of motivating prisoners to improve their knowledge and skills with regards to coping with life within the prison environment as well as working towards equipping them with knowledge and skills for possible employment on release from custody and working towards a crime-free lifestyle. Music provides an alternative approach to overcoming these challenges, both because of the creative and practical methodology as well as being free from the stigma identified with more formal teaching methods. We are now included in the Serco/HMP Kilmarnock Strategic Plan 2011-12 as a key partner agency, working within a multi-agency approach to achieve the Government’s target of reducing reoffending. We strongly believe that we can continue to grow the project further, offering more effective and efficient pre and post release support, making a significant impact on the reduction of recidivism. 35

OUR PROJECTS

Unite The Unite project is for children, young people and adults living with a wide range of additional support needs and learning disabilities. Unite seeks to enable our groups to participate fully within our community, allowing new opportunities in performing arts, reducing isolation and discrimination and promoting true inclusion within the broader community. Unite currently encompasses our Aspire, Rising Stars and Reach Out groups. Reach Out @ Centrestage is our informal drop-in class for adults with a wide range of support needs, many of whom are supported in their own accommodation. This informal, sociable and high energy class is full of music, creative movement and laughter. Carers and family members are welcome to fully participate, or to enjoy a coffee in reception as the class takes place. The class can be paid weekly and runs from 10.30am on Tuesday mornings, all year round. Pre-booking is not required. Rising Stars @ Centrestage takes place after school each Thursday and is for children aged from 5-12 years. Each class includes favourite pop songs, show tunes and dances from music requested by the children and they give regular performances on stage in the auditorium. Rising Stars runs throughout term time as well as most school holidays and there is a very high ratio of staff to children enabling them to make incredible progress in a supportive and fun environment. 38

facebook.com/centrestage

@CentrestageMT

Aspire 2 Act takes place on Thursday afternoons and is for children and adults aged 13+ years. Each week, class members are given the opportunity to develop their acting, improvising and social skills, gaining the confidence and understanding of how to develop their skills and take them further. Aspire 2 Sing & Dance runs immediately after Aspire 2 Act on Thursdays and, as with all of our Unite classes, runs weekly, all year round. This group, aged 14 years to adult, gives regular public performances and all members continue to make incredible progress, challenging our expectations and raising the standard of performance at every rehearsal and showcase. The class is energetic and sociable, with a very high staff ratio, ensuring that everyone’s creative potential is fully realised. Music for all tastes is included in the classes, with requests from class members often making up the foundation of the final onstage performances. Opportunities for everyone to sing solo or in small groups are offered and the confidence of the performers as they enjoy the audience reaction continues to grow. Through rehearsals and regular public performances, alongside other Centrestage groups, all participants attain improved physical fitness alongside greater skills of communication, teamwork, self-control, motivation and confidence. New members are always welcomed! Aspire 2 Lead provides meaningful work experience placements for our Unite participants, where possible.

My Centrestage Story

“The word that describes my feelings for Centrestage is ‘pride’! I belong to such an unusual family, and that is exactly what we are – one big family, made up of all ages, from all walks of life, with one thing in common, our love for the amazing place that is Centrestage. I am so proud to be a part of Senior Music Theatre. We are a team made up of a group of fantastic people, aging from 17-70! We work together, laugh together and perform together. I’ve been in this team now for three years and have experienced every emotion, made wonderful friends for life, and surprised myself with every performance. It never ceases to amaze me when new members join, that after a few weeks they ‘fit in’ and feel welcome and are part of the team. I am the oldest ‘girl’ in the group and love the fact that my daughter, Madi and I perform together. We have shared so many wonderful memories. I am so proud of Fiona McKenzie and Paul Mathieson whose dream came true. The idea that allowed so many people to realise their dreams from choreographer Marlisa Ross whose ideas are completely on another level, to the Aspire and Rising Stars classes, that light up the building and sum up the true meaning of Centrestage. When I am a member of the audience and sit in the auditorium and watch performance after performance, I appreciate the work on every level – from wardrobe to crew, for every group I genuinely feel ‘pride’.” Hazel Cuthbert, aged 52 years; Class Participant, Parent/Family member, Volunteer, Supporter of Centrestage activities 40

My Centrestage Story

“I started Centrestage in summer 2006 when I was 11 years old, timid and unaware of the impact that this first class would have on me! After the first summer school, when the stage was still wet with paint, I was hooked. I had caught the ‘CS fever’! I vividly remember my first day at Centrestage; the songs we sang, the games we played, the class members and the sheer excitement filling the room. It was the first time in my life where I was willing to leave my parents’ protection and try this new experience on my own. I must have had a feeling that this was something special! Centrestage was going to break my ‘shell’ and allow me to open up and express myself. Now, I have developed from a reluctant and cautious class member to a strong, confident class leader – ‘One of the team’. I enjoy watching the class members grow and develop just as Centrestage allowed me to do. I am now part of wonderful dance classes and dance troupes, talented musical theatre classes and the inspiring ‘Aspire’ and ‘Rising Stars’ classes who raise the bar with their zest for performing! There is no limit to the reward that these classes fill you with! Where else can you combine your workplace with collective passion, determination and fabulous colleagues, friends and team mates, whose paths would otherwise never have crossed? The Centrestage community is one that should truly be treasured.” Laura Smith, aged 17 years; Class Participant, Staff, Volunteer, Supporter of Centrestage activities

OUR PROJECTS

Fuse & Ignite The Fuse and Ignite projects, launching in Summer 2012, will allow us to involve people within the North West of Kilmarnock in community choirs, music theatre, dance, drama, enterprise and leadership activities, in the knowledge that such activities can be used as tools to help reduce crime, anti-social and violent behaviour, raise levels of health and education and strengthen the community whilst helping empower the participants to take control of their own lives. Activities will be delivered in local hubs, initially to young people, many of whom have great difficulty in conforming with mainstream school and community activities and who are causing low and high level disruption in their areas. Many are living with the direct effects of financial poverty combined with the poverty of expectation and aspiration endemic within their own peer groups. The Ignite project is aimed at young people aged from 8-24 years, whilst the Fuse project will, over time, be delivered to all ages. The projects will serve as instruments of social transformation for the participants from the area, which is located within the top 5% of areas of deprivation in Scotland (SIMD figures).

42

facebook.com/centrestage

@CentrestageMT

They will focus on the assets within the community, foster productive and constructive use of leisure time, actively motivate participants to remain in; or to re-engage with, education and will serve as a unique strategy to prevent alcohol, drug use and crime among a high risk group living in a particularly hazardous social environment, motivating them to find new strengths and to engage with each other and the wider community as they work towards public performances. Both projects are geared towards promoting lifelong learning, delivering community regeneration, improving community safety and enhancing health and wellbeing. The guiding principles of the project use music to improve, motivate, dignify and unite. Our aim is to focus on the existing assets within the community and provide productive and constructive outlets for leisure time for all ages. These projects are being launched with the generous support of the Robertson Trust and Young Start.

OUR PROJECTS

Reach Out Through Centrestage Communities delivering voluntary programmes in a wide range of outlying areas within Ayrshire and beyond, it is clear that the physical and social barriers to rural access to Centrestage performances and projects are in many cases insurmountable. To that end, our Reach Out programme enables members of our wider community to actively engage and participate more both within their own communities as well as Centrestage life. A number of Centrestage service users come from a wide range of outlying areas and it is with this in mind that Centrestage has developed strong partnerships with various groups within our wider community. Over the years, our performers and project leaders have travelled throughout Ayrshire and beyond to deliver courses, classes and concerts to groups, particularly those living in outlying areas. In many cases, such strong relationships have been formed that regular coach trips to experience Centrestage performances now take place from areas as diverse as Kilwinning, Irvine, Ayr, Prestwick, Uplawmoor, Dunlop and Stewarton and many more are planned. Over the coming months, the Reach Out programme of projects, including elements of Musical Generations, Ignite, Fuse, Connect and core Centrestage activities will be delivered in partnership with local secondary schools allowing sustained project delivery to take place over a far broader geographical area. 46

Centrestage Groups

Members of the public can make group bookings for our major productions where we provide a coach service to and from the Centrestage venue. The recipients of this transport provision have included school pupils, older people and families who prefer the enjoyment of travelling together by coach. The transport service offers security, reliability and peace of mind, particularly for older people as this removes the burden of having to travel independently. Those patrons attending as a group are able to travel with friends old and new and patrons are taken “door to door with easy access on and off the coach. There is easy disabled access into and out of Centrestage, with very little walking distance involved and wheelchair access is simple with the potential for large numbers of wheelchair users to attend any performance. We only ask that when booking tickets, we are advised that a wheelchair space will be required.

The outcomes of those patrons attending thus far have been extremely positive, with our patrons leaving Centrestage feeling uplifted and returning again and again. Group bookings are open to anyone at special rates. My Centrestage Story “Coming to CS is a large part of our family life. CS has been a fantastic place for our daughter to grow up in. She spends so much time here that it has become a place where she is developing her skills, socialising with fantastic friends and has given her the opportunity to develop her leadership skills. While doing this, we know she has been in a happy and safe environment.” Lesley Stewart, aged 46 years; Class Participant, Parent/Family member ***** “Centrestage develops you into the person you want to be. It allows you to forget about everything else that might not be so good in your life. When you’re here, you do what you love. From being at Centrestage, it has inspired me to go to London to fulfil my dream. If you come here, you get to progress to the highest of levels and if you do want to pursue a career in Performing, it gives you a great starting point. You’ll struggle to find great experiences anywhere else – Centrestage is a happy, supportive environment.” Steven Swan, aged 22 years; Class Participant, Staff, Volunteer, Supporter of Centrestage activities ***** “Centrestage makes me happy! Centrestage is an escape from all stressful school work and has an enormously positive impact on my week. I have been involved in numerous productions in Centrestage, both as a performer and an audience member. Each performance has completely wowed me! The opportunities that Centrestage provide are very special and the experiences created are unforgettable. The staff and the other members of Centrestage make you feel welcome and comfortable, which creates the family community feeling amongst everybody in the building. My Centrestage Story

“Centrestage is a living, breathing, thriving community that I feel makes positive changes in the local community and beyond. I am confident that the legacy of its community spirit will be carried forward by every single participant and member of staff. Centrestage has given me a huge sense of pride watching my daughter develop enthusiasm, commitment and dedication. Also proud to see her bond with children and adults with additional support needs, knowing that this will continue forward into her adult life and that her life experiences have been hugely enriched by the sense of belonging and community that is the ethos at Centrestage.” Adrian Robson, aged 57 years; Parent/Family member, Volunteer ***** “Centrestage has done so much for me over the years. I have been a part of Centrestage from its very first term and what surprised me then and still surprises me now is the strength of the ideology Centrestage creates: we are more than just the sum of our parts. From the moment you enter the building it is clear how cohesive all members and staff are. Centrestage is more than a building for theatre, it is a respite, a social circle and a family. Without Centrestage it is hard to believe that I would have become the person I am today, granted me more opportunities than I could have dreamed of and fulfilled countless dreams. For that I am truly grateful. Theatre is more than an art, it is in fact a way of life and I consider Centrestage the same. Over the time I have been an active part of the company, one constant has always remained – Centrestage is a home, and even though its children may leave the nest from time to time, they will always return because home is where they know they belong.” David Wood, aged 18 years; Class Participant, Supporter of Centrestage activities 51

My Centrestage Story “I have enjoyed every part of my experience. It’s highly sociable and because of my love of music, it has broadened my horizons. I would find a big gap left in my life if it wasn’t for Centrestage. It’s like being part of a larger family.” Isobel Robertson, aged 63 years; Class Participant ***** “Centrestage has completely changed my life. Centrestage has enabled me to develop skills that I will use for the rest of my life and has given me the tools of improved confidence while allowing me to continuously develop as a performer and as a person. I am so proud to be part of Centrestage.” Ronald Swanson, aged 22 years; Class Participant, Staff, Volunteer, Supporter of Centrestage activities ***** “Centrestage means a great deal to me and my daughter. Both her and I have been able to spend huge amounts of time working together at Centrestage surrounded by the most lively, creative and enthusiastic bunch of people I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with. The ethos of Centrestage is something that I value tremendously, where people (young and old) can come together and work in harmony. Centrestage has given me an outlet for my spare time and energy as a volunteer after finding myself with extra time on my hands after the loss of my parents. It has introduced me to all sorts of characters and ages of people who I would never ordinarily have met and I have made some lovely friendships along the way. I enjoy being busy and love the general buzz surrounding CS especially during intense rehearsals and productions. We all have, as a community a huge debt of gratitude to pay to Fiona McKenzie and Paul Mathieson for allowing our young people to have a healthy, creative, well balanced life within Centrestage and beyond. ” Fiona Smith, aged 44 years; Parent/Family member, Volunteer, Supporter of Centrestage activities 56

To date, the Kilmarnock Fair Festival has attracted large numbers of tourists from across Britain and Europe. However, by encouraging Ayrshire audiences to attend these events staged by world class performers, local residents are able to view their community through a tourist’s eyes. We aim to attract further project funding and sponsorship that will enable us to develop the Kilmarnock Fair Festival and aid Ayrshire’s economy by attracting an even wider customer base to grow local and domestic tourism, as well as allowing us to form further partnerships with local businesses and sponsors.

External Acts Centrestage showcases a number of other external acts who perform at the CS Venue. To date, these have included Brian Kennedy, Hue and Cry, The Magnets, Flava, Skerryvore and the world premiere of Umoja Gaelica featuring international performer and international patron of Centrestage, Lea Gilmore. 65

Volunteering Centrestage currently employs 24 members of staff on a full or part time basis, with all team members volunteering additional hours far beyond those they are contracted to deliver. In addition to core team members, we have a volunteer team currently numbering 80+ who contribute a vast amount of time and talent to the organisation. Centrestage has been extremely fortunate to benefit from this wonderful and enthusiastic team. We understand the varied aspirations held by volunteers and are able to provide a wide range of volunteer roles within our purpose built facility. Our volunteers take great pleasure and pride in their contribution to Centrestage and in return are offered a supportive and nurturing environment. There is no upper age limit to those who can volunteer at Centrestage. In fact, the more varied the ages, the more we can all learn together. Our youngest volunteer is currently aged 12 years. As part of our volunteer selection process, a simple application form and an informal interview enable us to find relevant volunteer placements which are appropriate to both the volunteer and the company.

My Centrestage Story

“I believe Centrestage offers so many opportunities and experiences, in so many different ways, to so many people of all ages and abilities. It is something positive in our town which we should all be proud of. Centrestage has provided a huge variety of musicals, shows, classes, master classes, concerts etc. all to a very high standard of performance. Singing, dancing, choreography, lighting and sound production are first class. Centrestage is also heavily involved in outreach work and is happy to try new ideas and initiatives. My son has been involved regularly in playing percussion at many shows and musicals, and my grandson is now attending classes. Keep up the good work!” Andrew Keachie, aged 65 years; Supporter of Centrestage activities ***** “Centrestage has been my survival net. Throughout primary and secondary school I was constantly bullied and went through a horrible time in my life of constantly being sick. I had no way of showing my feelings or getting rid of my emotions. Then my Guidance teacher told me about Centrestage and I decided to give it a chance. And from the second I walked through the door I knew Centrestage is where I belonged. I’d never felt so free and content with myself. Now Centrestage is a part of my life, not only have I got my own world of singing and dancing, but I have a second family. I have made friends that will stay with me forever. I’ve taken part in one of the biggest musicals of all time, Les Mis. Centrestage is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I will miss it so much when I have to leave. When I do leave I will be moving to London to pursue a career in Performing Arts. But even though I won’t be a part of Centrestage any more there is no way you’ll make me forget it, I’ll be back before you know it.” Catherine Bacon, aged 15 years; Class Participant, Volunteer 72

My Centrestage Story “I first met Centrestage 5 years ago when my daughter said that I had to come to a concert that my granddaughter was appearing in. She had been attending a summer school in a converted warehouse in Kilmarnock. I was less than enthusiastic as 3 months previous I had to attend a show of ballet dancing that seem to go on for hours. So I wasn’t looking forward to another children’s show. But wow! What a difference. Small children coming on stage and confidently picking up a microphone and giving all they had. It was electric and full of energy. The enthusiasm comes off the stage and hits you between the eyes. I always wanted to tap dance as a boy but never had the opportunity. I joined a class and then moved onto Music Theatre. To me the excitement and the emotional rollercoaster at the Opening night of a show is wonderful. No matter what your age, standing in the dark in the wings waiting to go on to give it your best, even if it is only a very small part and you are part of the chorus, it is absolutely magic. But for me the best part of Centrestage is being on stage alongside people who have great talent and they still make me feel that I can contribute my limited skills to the company.” Jim Haig, aged 70 years; Class Participant, Parent/Family member, Supporter of Centrestage activities ***** “Who would’ve thought when I first entered Centrestage at the mere age of 12 that it would be such a big part of my life but now I don’t know what I’d do without it. It has had a massive impact on my life in so many ways. I now have the privilege of working there alongside a great team and with some wonderful groups of young adults gaining experience in all walks of life. Over the years I have made many wonderful and meaningful friendships, some that will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Madi Cuthbert, aged 18 years; Class Participant, Staff, Volunteer 81

My Front of House volunteering has given me responsibility and experience as well.” Alastair Bowie, aged 15 years; Class Participant, Volunteer ***** “It is great to be part of a community initiative which is so all embracing and inclusive, despite many differences in age and ability. The Future of Centrestage

Since opening in 2006, Centrestage has used music, drama and dance as tools to foster confidence, teamwork, pride, aspiration and a sense of community to everyone accessing our services. This ethos is extended to even the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups within wider society. We always have the best interests of our community at the heart of every activity we deliver. We aim to provide a direct link between more marginalised groups and the wider community and aim to help them feel connected to the wider geographical, cultural and social population. By focusing on the existing, often untapped assets within these groups, we aim to help them improve their own lives by providing and developing the tools to make this possible. If you feel you can help us in any way, please let us know.

Help to Change Lives at Centrestage

The CS Bursary Fund allows many children with additional support needs, young carers and young people who do not have the financial means or lifestyle to attend classes, to attend them at no cost themselves. It is funded by donations from businesses and individuals, proceeds from shows at Centrestage, corporate and community performances by our company members and public donations after performances at Centrestage. The CS Bursary Fund allows businesses and individuals to make a real difference to a person’s life, helping them to shape their journey and not assuming that their destination is inevitable.

Donations received from the CS Bursary Fund also contribute to the Musical Generations project provided for residents of nursing homes and sheltered housing; to the Unite project for children, young people and adults living with a wide range of additional support needs; and the Ignite project benefiting children and young people from vulnerable and chaotic backgrounds. The CS Bursary Fund also allows children and young people from vulnerable or challenging backgrounds the opportunity to participate in classes specifically geared towards them, allowing them to develop their confidence and social skills without the pressure of going immediately into mainstream Centrestage activities. The aim, over time, is to teach, encourage and support them to be able to join in with mainstream classes, supported where appropriate by the CS Bursary Fund, confidently and comfortably.
