Black Friday

First We Turkey, Then We Target

With the Thanksgiving season rapidly approaching, some forget other national holidays that occur after. The following day after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday” and it is seen as a ginormous shopping spree. People wake up with the sun just to be first for the deals that are seen once a year. This tradition started on September 24th 1869, and since then it is seen as one of the most chaotic days of the year.

Black Friday has always been a corporate scheme, and it allows businesses to finish the year with sales in the green num bers, and not red. However, this day is still loved by many people as it is close to Christmas and helps many families afford larger gifts for their families. In 2020, Black Friday hit an all history record with over Nine Billion dollars sold just in the US. In 2021, the online agencies were working hard with 17 billion dollars spent. The majority of shopping took place in the clothing section, and electronics was a close second.

Some famous places near us to look forward to consist of Walmart, Best Buy, Ross, JCpenney, Macy’s, Target, and so many more. Most sales on average go to 37% off. This National holiday makes Christmas shopping a breeze, and is fun to partake in. On line shoppers also get loads of deals with many sites flashing discount codes, and black friday discounts. So make sure to take that day off, because the deals this year are looking to be incredible.

NFL Fantasy Football

A Time to Enjoy Some Nice Friendly Competition

Every year during fall thousands of people come together and join Fantasy Football Leagues. Whether it be with family or friends, over the years this has become a treasured pastime for many. Many students find themselves conversing with their peers about how their team did that week.

It’s a great way for students to socialize and even a way to make money sometimes as many leagues have a cash prize if you win. Unlike normal where fans just root for one team Fantasy allows for football fans to root for more players. Whether you win or loss your league this year it’s important to remember how for a short time you came together with a lot of your friends or family to enjoy a truly simple thing

Untraditional Thanksgiving Foods

What untraditional or “weird” foods do SHS students eat on Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is a great day to spend with family and appreciate everything you are thankful for, but another great thing about this holiday is the food. Thinking of Thanksgiving dinner brings in the thoughts of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, right? Well, for some SHS students other food comes into their minds. Fettuccine alfredo, seafood, and… pickle sushi? Believe it or not, this is the untraditional or “weird” food our classmates eat every Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Traditions

Every November, many people look forward to Thanksgiving. Whether it is to see friends and family or to enjoy some deli cious food, everyone has their favorite part. Many families have their preferred traditions and activities that they do every year such as going on a trip, having everyone over, or even decorating the Christmas tree. A lot of people also prefer an easier and more relaxing day and do things such as watch a football game, while others like to be in on all the action.

What is Pickle Sushi?

There are tons of ways to gather with close friends and family on this happy day. Some enjoy group activities like going to the pumpkin patch, running a Turkey Trot, and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, while others like to cozy up by the fire and read a good book in the presence of their loved ones. A popular family favorite is competing in a movie marathon. The rules for a movie marathon vary among households from watching movies for six straight hours to completing a checklist of movies that meet various criteria. These list items can be any thing from a movie with a certain duration, to one that nobody is interested in, to ones starring characters with names of people in your family.

After asking SHS students what untraditional food their family eats on Thanksgiving, the one that seemed to stand out was pickle sushi. After asking Junior Daniel Ricks, he explains that “...to make pickle sushi one takes a slice of deli ham, spreads cream cheese on it, then wraps the ham around a baby dill pickle. You then slice it into little pieces like sushi. I had never heard of it until maybe 4 years ago when we had Thanksgiving with my mom’s family and one of her sisters made it. It tastes unique, but surprisingly good. It also might be called ‘pickle roll-ups’ but that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.”

Gathering together to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the most anticipated and festive ways to cele brate. Marching through downtown New York City, mega-sized balloons of world favorite disney and storybook characters, to major icons of the holidays like pumpkins and christmas orna ments can easily be seen on the busy sidewalks of New York. Over 3.5 million people gather to watch the parade live in the Big Apple and over 50 million more tune in from around the world. Every year, the parade features an array of performances from groups around the world. The Big Apple Circus returns again, bringing the finest talent from across the globe as well as The Spirit of America dance and cheer teams of 600 of the best performers from throughout the US. This holiday season is one to look forward to with all of the classic Thanksgiving traditions

Fall Decor Done Right

The best way to make a space embody your favorite aspects of Autumn.

Everyone likes the cozy, warm, soft fall energy and one of the best ways to bring that into your life is with decorations. A common issue many people run into when attempting to achieve this aesthetic is leaning too far into “fall” in the stereo typical sense which leaves the result feeling cheesy, overdone and cheap. So this year, if you are unsatisfied with the fake pumpkins and plastic strings of leaves, here are some ways to incorporate the comforting feeling of autumn without looking like you cleared the seasonal aisle of walmart.

Of course this is not the only way to decorate for the colder months but the comfortable and homey aspects make a room very appealing to be in when the out side is typically cold and wet. One of the best ways to change the feeling of a room is with fabrics. Adding soft, warm toned curtains will dim natural light, soften the area, and provide a pop of color. As fall begins we are entering the colder parts of the year, so layers are everything. Bringing out extra blankets and pillows are an easy go-to. Crochet blankets look and feel cozy, and they will add to the autumn aesthetic.

As a final touch to solidify the autumn look, adding some art, tapestries, or posters, that encapsulate fall to you will wrap everything up nicely and leave you feeling like you have a genuine area, void of any cheesiness.

Autumn Garments and Pretty Pigments

The summer heat is long faded, warm jackets and loose jeans are in.

Withevery season, a new aesthetic is refreshed and refurbished into your wardrobe. Summer trends like mens tropical button ups and mini skirts are over. Colder weather calls for a different sort of dress and style. Gen Z, with a new fashionable wave, have brought back trends from the 90s for this autumn session. This season will wear loose, low-rise jeans, the motherload of leather, and the usual boots with skirts. However, the teens of fall are dressing more with oversized sweaters, distressed jeans, the occasional sweater vest, “hippie skirts”, and more Doc Martens than you’ll ever see. Overall, a census of color has boiled down to: beiges, dull browns, limes, oranges, and your classic grays.

However, these “central fashions” are not always easily accessible. You might even be wondering: what can I wear directly out of my closet, but still dress stylish? Well, next time you go through your wardrobe, look around and notice what you have and what follows certain trends. Even so, try searching sites like pin terest for new aesthetic ideas. Clothing doesn’t necessarily always have to fit every new trend. If you prefer high-waisted skinny jeans over baggy denim then wear what works for you.

A Slice of Life

Kasten makes a Pie

For those of you who haven’t made a pie before, it is a difficult task. The process seems rather simple and yet so troublesome. Last weekend I made an apple pie from scratch for the first time. I began by adding together flour, sugar, and an egg until forming the pie crust. This was very difficult due to it breaking apart every time I tried to shape it into a semiround pie shape. After making the crust I moved on to the apple filling which ended up being pretty simple. Surprisingly I didn’t cut myself while peeling and cutting up the apples. With the two components ready I began to construct the pie. This is where it fell apart. The pie dough had stuck to my cutting board and I had no choice but to rip it off. In this way, I ruined my perfectly good pie crust. Trying to solve this disaster, I cut up half the crust forming a nicely woven blanket for the top. This worked out well and ended up saving my pie. In addition to the woven top, I made a little pie rose at the top with leftover dough and called it ready to bake. One hour later my pie came out of the oven and was done. Although the pie looked decent it could of used more flavor and ended up being a little bland. I struggled most in the creation of the pie crust and forming it into a pie but the rest of it wasn’t to hard.

Local Fall Drinks Reviewed

The Starbucks Caramel Macchiato is a classic specialty drink and is a favorite to many.

During this year’s Fall Menu release, Starbucks released its classic Apple Crisp Macchiato to pour the cool crisp air of fall into your cup. Built off of the traditional Caramel Macchiato with milk, vanilla syrup, espresso, and caramel drizzle, the Apple Crisp Oat milk Macchiato now is made with oat milk to add a new, soft, fall-like taste to the favorite. Overall Score of 9/10.

The Jitterz Big Pumpkin is a freezing fall favorite among many high school students. It’s cold, smoothie-like texture is a new twist on the traditional hot or iced fall drinks. The flavor is spot-on with amazing pumpkin and notes of cinnamon and other fall spices. While perfect when freshly made, the drink does warm up quickly and become slightly watered down. Overall score 7/10.

The Kessas Iced Pumpkin Chai Latte is a great choice for those who like to keep their drinks simple yet delicious and have a bit of a sweet tooth. The delicious drink is an amazing combina tion of chai spices with the perfect amount of pumpkin and cinnamon. While the Pumpkin Chai is an amazing drink, it doesn’t bring anything very unique to the table. Overall score 8/10.

Top Five Fall Hallmark Candles!

Candles

have always been drenched in the glory of scents. Fall especially brings forth flavors and fra grances that traditionally only last these few months. Commonly, pumpkin spice-sometimes in latte form-joins the circus, but recently these sweet tones gave way to some ”musky” undergrowth.

Sandpoints Hallmark store downtown carries a wide variety of gift and holiday items, candles and tapers included. Despite the candle shelf being minimally bare, five candles stood out among the strong scents.

1.Cinnamon Chai - Warm, and spicy tones. Cinnamon scented items will always rank first so long as the sweetness underneath shines through, like in this candle.

2.Fireside + Redwood + Sandalwood Clove - This fragrance definitely radiates the “masculine” energy most candles fail to achieve. This candle produces a warm, earthy feel.

3.Pumpkin Praline - The sweet, pie filling-like scent this candle emits is a little overpowering, but the warm-orange undertones bring it all together.

4. Pumpkin Praline + Pumpkin Butter + White Honey - Although this candle is less overpowering than #3 the butter and honey and not as represented, but still this candle is sweet and warm.

5. Tapers - These unscented candles definitely are not just for the fall vibe, their holders-candelabras-pro duce a fancy and aesthetically pleasing presentation for any table setting desirable. Thanksgiving dinner? Surround the table with colorful candles. A friend’s birthday party? Surprise them with a candle selection.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Super Mario is a rambunctious shortstack known for his Senegalian mustache, popular among the students of Sandpoint high school. Later this year, Super Mario will be making his grandiose appearance in the form of Christopher Michael Pratt. That’s right, this young Jap anese-Italian plumber is now an average white guy. Representation in modern media is at an all time high! It’s time we take a look at the trailer to see just how Mariolicious this movie will be. The preview starts off by showcasing a treacherous turf war between Bowser’s koopa army and a squad of penguins. The penguins start by unleashing an unrelent ing hailstorm of snowballs upon the koopas, only to be humiliated in the face of overwhelming power. It seems as if there’s no hope for the flightless foot soldiers, until suddenly Mario shows up. The scene has already changed by this point, so Mario has no presence in the great war. Surrounded by colossal mushrooms, Mario is amazed at the magnificent scenery. Unbeknownst to our colonized protagonist, one of the fungi was none other than Kee gan-Michael Key. Mario and Keegan set off on a grand adventure, which we’ll witness as soon as the film releases this summer.

A-Cross the Decade

As the fall sports season comes to a close, Sandpoint gets a chance to display its strength in district and sport competitions. It’s a very exciting time of year for athletes; but this year is different for Sandpoint cross country. It’s the tenth regional race in a streak of nine victories, putting a lot of pressure and em phasis on the 2022 race. Those nine different wins represent a decade of hard work and dedication across nine different teams of individuals. This year, both the boy’s and the girl’s sides had a chance to round out a decade of greatness, a massive landmark in the Sandpoint legacy.

The fateful race took place in Lewiston, Idaho, home of the fastest course in the state. The weather was perfect, and the surface was ideal for rac ing. Tensions were high as Lakeland, Sandpoint, and Moscow lined up their runners at the start line. There was a sense of duty among the Sand point team; a drive to hold up the leg acy that had taken ten years to build. But Moscow was hungry; two whole teams had failed to see success at regionals, and the district trophy was gleaming more than ever, beckoning them to finally claim their victory.

In the women’s race, this motivation proved to be enough. Although Sandpoint ran a good race, with senior Maren Davidson making regional champion with a time of 19:05, Moscow surprised their competition with an unyielding determination. The final score was 27-28, with Moscow squeaking out a victory by one point.

After witnessing the dismay of their fellow teammates, the men’s team went into their own race with newfound determination. Junior Nathan Roche led the race with a time of 16:08, and Sandpoint beat Moscow soundly with a score of 24-38. This rounded out the Sandpoint men’s tenth regional title in a row, a legacy that they hope lives on for many years to come.

Taylor Swift recently released her newest album, Midnights and people have very mixed opinions on the new album. While some people like Senior, Anna Reinink say, “She’s an icon. You like it even if you don’t.” Others disagree, “Way overhyped. It’s just not that good.” says Senior, Maile Evans. While there are very mixed opinions on Taylor’s newest drop I personally loved the album. Some people have said that all of the songs sound the same, but I feel like on most albums all the songs sound similar.

If you really listen to the songs they are really well made. Some of my favorite songs were Lavender Haze, Maroon, Midnight Rain, and Question…?.
