Meet the Cedar Post!

TheSandpoint High School Cedar Post has been around since 1926. It is one of the oldest activities offered at SHS. Cindy Wood en, a National Catholic Reporter who reports events about Pope Francis started her journalism journey in 1975 when she joined the Cedar Post. Wooden says that her time on the Cedar Post staff, first as a reporter and eventually an assistant editor, helped her in her college and professional life, “at SHS I received a real education in journalism…The Cedar Post was an introduction to authentic journalism,” Wooden said that her learnings from the Cedar Post are, “all still relevant.” Sometimes when reporting you have to cover things that may put you out of your comfort zone and the Cedar Post challenges kids to take on difficult topics. Wooden said her most memorable article created a stir among the faculty, “the librarian [pulled] a copy of Time magazine from the shelves be cause there was a tiny photo of a nude in it; the photo was of an art masterpiece.” Being in a journalism class can create lifelong mem ories, “My best memory is hanging out with other staffers in the Cedar Post room, putting the paper together or talking about local politics.” While Wooden says that if she could go back in time she wouldn’t change anything, Tyson Bird, former Editor-In-Chief from 2012-2014, said that now he has more professional experience he has some things he would have liked to done differently, “I think we did a little too much “daily” coverage for something that came out monthly…We should have spent a LOT more time getting great photography.” Bird agreed with Wooden saying that, “the Cedar Post is nearly identical to every newsroom I have ever worked in.” Currently, Bird works for the official travel magazine of Texas, Texas Highway Magazine as a web editor, “In many ways, it reminds me of the Cedar Post. We’re a small team with a unique funding model which allows us to be exceptionally creative.” Whether it’s work ing in Rome or Texas, the Cedar Post helps to pave the way for young people to start getting their footing in the journalism field. The Cedar Post is one of the longest standing activities at SHS and will continue to grow and better itself as the years progress.

Clubs you didn’t know about

Clubs known only to a few high school students.

President Olen Neu and supervisor Dalton Hawkings lead on average 10-15 students through many different activities. From the words of Hawkings, “E-sports helps students find a connection with each other, while also getting them the chance to compete and participate in a school activity.” Join students of a welcoming community, talented in coding and gaming of all kinds. They’ve completed nationally and are always welcome to more people. Meetings are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:20pm to 5pm in room S1. They hope to see you there!

National Honors Society, or NHS for short, is a nationwide organization that recognizes mem bers for achievements in scholarship, leadership, service and character development. Junior, Hailey Fisher is the president of NHS at Sand point high school. There are currently around 35 members, and the meetings are on the last Thursday of every month. The NHS focuses on service for the community and helping others around the small town of Sandpoint. Interest ed in joining? Mark your calendar for the next meeting!

Last year’s president, Fallyn O’Connor, led the club in many topics of writing for 15-20 min utes, then the students would share their writ ing. Creative writing club is a wonderful place to express yourself and not be judged. There are many things to learn in this club, and many people waiting to share it with you.

High School No No’s

Every school has those certain unspoken rules that everyone “should” follow

No-No #1: Bathrooms

Crowding inside or outside of the bathroom is a big no no becuase it makes it difficult for kids to get into a stall to use the restroom. Also, talking about drama or another student very loudly is rude and disrectful because everyone can hear you and not everyone is interested in your personal drama.

No-No #2: Disrespect

Brian Barcklay’s no no is, “students ripping posters off the wall.” This is a good one because it is so disre spectful when students take them down, especially when the posters were made by other students. “..Another thing is the disrespect some students have for others, it just leads to unnecessary drama.” Said Stella Burke.

No-No #3: Loitering and Littering

Everyone has somewhere to go for lunch whether that be sitting in the cafeteria, outside or going off campus. The school entrance is not one of those places listed, students should never eat between there. When kids sit in be tween the doors, it makes it difficult to get in and out of the building because students will hit them with the door on the way in or out. Everywhere outside has been covered with trash. There are trash cans out in front of the school and next to the parking lot. It’s important to pick up after yourselves.

No-No #4: Dress Code

Other no nos by students are, “Violating the dress code. People do it literally ALL. THE. TIME”, according to Zella Lopez. As students, we understand both sides of this, there’s times when it’s ok and when it’s not. We have a very diverse school with many opinions, especially on the dress code and the restrictions in the school.

No-No #5: Hallway traffic

Speaking of students being disrespectful to one another, Stella Burke says, “Some things I see around the school that frustrate me are the people who stand in groups in the hallway when I’m trying to walk with the flow of people.”

Waterworks

High School bathrooms, which is the best?

Since the dawn of man, one question has persisted in the minds of those who walk the Earth. It has stumped, confused, and utterly baffled even the most inquisitive of minds. It has eaten and gnawed like a cancerous tumor in the subconscious of everyone in the high school. After many long hours and hard work, the answer has final ly arisen. The answer as to which bathroom is objectively the best in Sandpoint High School. Data has been taken from around each of the bathrooms in the school from many unbiased, diverse sources. To be considered in this data the bathroom has to be a bathroom and only a bathroom. That means no locker rooms.

To begin, the best overall men’s bathroom in the school. When asked to rate the bathroom directly north-west of the commons on a scale of one to five, the average consensus of people interviewed rated the experience a four. The toilet paper was reportedly “Good” according to one Andrew Sperry, and all the amenities were in stock. The clean liness was averaged out to be a three out of five star experience. So, if you need to go in school and you are a man, head north-west of the commons and find a wonderful experience.

The best women’s bathroom is very clearly the winner for this re view. With a standout average score of 4.5 out of five stars and a fully stocked repertoire, the answer as to which female bathroom is the best is obvious. The S. Hall Women’s bathroom. Mateja Riberio even stated that the atmosphere of the bathroom was “Exciting”. The only down side to the restroom being that I can not use it, which makes me sad.

Be advised to steer clear of the southernmost male bathroom. Only averaging 1.5 stars out of 5, this bathroom is a disaster. The toilet paper was nearly out of stock. The bathroom had “An air of misfor tune” according to prolific musi cian and actor Sidney Meshberg. Not only this, but it was recently found that a door is missing from one of the bathroom stalls. Any one of these things by themselves would make a bathroom experi ence not enjoyable in the slightest, but combined, these factors lead to the South Male Bathroom being the worst in the school.

Parking Frenzy

An Update on the SHS Parking Lot

Parking lots can be congested and difficult to navigate if not designed or organized efficiently. As most juniors, seniors, and even some sophomores know, the parking lot is a busy place before and after school and can be pretty chaotic and also dangerous. With this year’s rearrangement of designated parking areas, there are advantages and disadvantages. While all of the student parking is now together, shifting the teach er parking to the middle school parking lot and front rows, it also removes the overflow lot and increases congestion at dismissal. With only two access points to the parking lot, routes to leave are limited. All students, parents, and buses are confined to these two exits. With many factors contributing to the congestion, Sandpoint High School’s new School Resource Officer, Officer Donald Little, shared his thoughts and ideas on the parking lot situ ation. With only two points of access and approximately 375 parking spaces available, most of which hold students trying to leave, the two exits get hectic quickly. With school buses running on a tight schedule, having almost 15 leaving right after school does not help the situation. Buses arrive early through the North entrance to miss the parent pickup traffic, and leave soon after the bell through the South exit. Officer Little details how the South exit being a right turn only, a yield, and extremely close to the intersection of Division and Highway 2, only allowing space for a few vehicles between green lights. Also, with large amounts of southbound traffic leaving through the main exit, and heading south, leaving through the South exit can be almost impossible, espe cially when turning North on Highway 2. This year, without assigned parking and or guaranteed parking spaces, there have been more passes sold than parking spaces available.

SHS Traditions

Learn what events make Sandpoint High School unique.

At Sandpoint High School, it is known that we have yearly tradi tions that have been carried on throughout the years. The most obvious ones appear to be Toga Tuesday for seniors during home coming week, along with Powderpuff and Ironman to switch up the roles.

Toga Tuesday is a dress up day specific to Seniors during home coming week. Junior Addie Guidos, expressed how her favorite SHS tradition is dress up week by saying, “I love dress up days! I think it’s a fun break from a normal school day, and it’s fun to dress up with friends. I think it’s also a great way to easily show some school spirit.” During the homecoming week, seniors wear bed sheets as toga’s instead of following the other planned dress up day for the other students. During this week of homecoming, aswell, there is the Powderpuff game. This is where girls from all classes take the time to practice football taught by players often from the boys football team. In the middle of the week, all classes compete against each other in a tournament style in hopes to win the victory and a trophy welded by one of our students. Homecoming weekend is kicked off by Senior Caleb Norling’s fa vorite tradition, the homecoming football game. He says, “It’s just such an awesome way for everyone to come together and get be hind our guys while they try their hardest to win us the night. Just so awesome to be there and experience such a great atmosphere. Nobody really cares what anybody else thinks, we’re just there to have fun and beat the other guys.” This game is the day before the dance on a Friday night. It is a great way to kick off everyone’s school spirit for the year and a win always brings excitement to the dance. The other big week for dress up days is for Battle for the Paddle.

Senior Colin

Roos says, “My favorite (tradi tion) is Battle for the Paddle be cause it involves the whole school and it is a time when I can go all out on school spirit!” Battle for the Paddle is a big event where we compete against our rival school in many types of compe titions that also showcase our amazing athletes and talented stu dents. Every January, we get together with Lakeland High School and compete in events like basketball, wrestling, dance, cheer, lip sync, rap battle, boat race, art, and spirit. Another way to earn points is by fundraising more than the other school, so it is also a great way to help our community.

The year is wrapped up with another big tradition, Ironman. Like Powderpuff, the roles of the sport are switched and it is a big tournament of boys volleyball. The girls coach a few practices and the classes go against each other to win a trophy made by a weld ing student. It is another great way to bring everyone together and cheer on your class while showing your school spirit. There are many more little traditions our school carries on, but it is important to know a few. Dress up days, Toga Tuesday, Home coming football game, Battle for the Paddle, and Ironman are only just a few amazing events that are put on every year. These tradi tions are a great way to come together and show our spirit.

Hidden Gems!

Bay Trail

Take a left as you enter the city beach, and you’ll be met by a brumbalous trail winding along the edge of our own Lake Ponderay, over a mile in length. The bay trail, sometimes known as blackrock trail, is perfect for both walking and biking. This is a great opportunity to for an easy hike with family or friends without needing to travel out of town. In the summertime, there are various places to set up on the shore and swim without the crowd of the city beach. Discover an ancient structure early in the trail, which locals have often compared to stonehenge or the sistine chapel. There’s no better place to take your dog or cat for a quality stroll. Embark, with your family, friends, or pets by your side, on the journey of a lifetime down this waterside pathway. P.S. Don’t mind the snakes, they’re non-venomous and just want to be your friend.

Healing Garden

Hidden in the shadow of Bonner General Health, this magical oasis is the best place to heal your soul. Im merse yourself in the enchanting nature, with blooming flowers and bleeding hearts. Charming statues of bunnies, hippos and many other fun friends will greet you on your way through the gardenscape. Traverse through a wooden castle, and ride atop a benevolent bug. In the land of jumbo mushrooms, you’ll be faced by a colossal thumb, which locals have often compared to a supreme deity of creation or the sistine chapel. This park offers an enjoyable experience for all ages, so you can bring your little siblings or your grandparents. There’s no better place to relax and heal than the official garden of healing.

Heart Bowls

Starting its journey as a small food truck, this smoothie empire has built itself into a full restaurant in down town Sandpoint. Their healthy and delicious smoothie bowls and treats will satisfy your cravings in a nutri tious manner. Don’t have a sweet tooth? They also offer quality salads and avocado toast. The interior boasts a chic and lively aesthetic, making it a perfect backdrop for your next Instagram post. Enjoy your meal sur rounded by nature with their second-to-none outdoor seating, which locals have often compared to the gar den of eden or the sistine chapel. Next time you find yourself downtown and wondering where to eat, make sure to check out this fruitful eatery.

A Fresh Perspective

It has been a few weeks since school got back into session. There has already been a lot that happened within those weeks, such as assemblies, powderpuff, the hoco game & dance and more. But one thing that stands out this year are the amount of new freshmen. There are about 315 new freshmen at this school. Some moved in from somewhere, others have lived here in Sandpoint all their life. People have come here from all over the US.

Roman Coscarelli

“The amount of freedom & responsibility that Sandpoint High School has is incredi ble. I love it. Its decorations & aesthetic are nice & I like the passion of tradition.”

Adrian Burleson

“Within the first two weeks of being here, I felt pretty good. The school felt very welcoming and not overwhelming.”

Welcome to SHS!

An introduction to the new teachers, staff, and leaders at SHS.

Rebecca Haag

Rebecca Haag came to SHS because “...we have lived here for twenty years and my kids go to school here and I wanted to live and work in the same town! I also have always wanted to join the Bulldog team!”. Mrs Haag took over John Hastings Ecology and Horticulture classes after his retirement last year. Her biggest challenge this year so far has been “Getting to know everyone’s name in the larger classes and hauling my materials from P6 to W2 and back again each day (but it’s good exercise, I suppose)”. Mov ing schools can be a difficult transition for anyone. Since moving to the high school Mrs. Haag’s favorite part of the Highschool has been the students and the staff, “ The students and the staff are my favorite part. I have the priv ilege of having some super awesome kids in my classes and everyone who works here has been welcoming and supportive.” Before teaching at the High School Mrs. Haag was a wildlife biologist and even spent some time trapping over 100 bears.

Mindy Roget

After years of teaching at different schools Mrs. Roget decided to take a stab at teaching high school. When asked what her favorite part of the high school has been so far Roget replied “I love the diversity!”. Mrs Roget became apart of the Math department here at the high school, teaching Geo matry. “(The biggest challenge) getting kids to love math! Especially geometry.” says Mrs Roget. Roget was also once a student here at SHS and says “It feels like I never left!”.

Kari Granier

Our new assistant principal Kari Granier has a long histo ry with sandpoint. She went from teaching at the middle school to being the principal to now a assistant principal at Sandpoint High school. When asked about leaving the middle school Mrs. Granier said “Leaving the middle school was very dif ficult for me as I thought I would be a Bullpup for LIFE! But when the opportunity was presented to me to make the move to the high school and get to hang out with all my favorite students, I couldn’t pass it up!” An interesting thing about Mrs Granier is that when she was in high school she raised money for college by raising pigs. Mrs. Granier also played three varsity sports in her time at the high school (These sports were Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball).

Alex Manning

ASB President stands for Associated Student Body President. Our current ASB president at Sandpoint High School is Senior, Alex Manning. Manning said that he ran for ASB president because he, “cares about representing the students of this great school.” Manning says that he hopes that while he is ASB president the school can teach students to, “be excellent in everything that they do.” and he is excited for everyone to find their place and reach their full potential. Every year with a new president comes new ideas, Manning says that he wants to make sure that the Student Council is working for the students this school year. Getting to know Manning a little bit better, he plans to go into public service when he graduates, “I want to see myself go off and stand and deliver for people.” Manning says that he is excited to pursue this career path and to fight for what is right because of how rewarding it is. As we continue through the year you can look to Manning to represent the student body full heartedly and excitedly!

The inside of the restaurant is well decorated and has some cute paintings along the walls. We all ordered beef and brisket pho, a side of egg rolls, and I got honeydew melon tea and someone else got a strawberry crush tea. The pho is served with a few sides- Bean sprouts, Thai Basil, Jalapeno and lime. The food and drinks came out very quickly!
