“Can you help me, Cat?” asks the Little Red Hen. “No,” says Cat. “I’m busy. Ask Horse.” But Horse is asleep. “Oh, dear! I must ask Sheep,” says the Little Red Hen. 6

A week later, the Little Red Hen is in the field again. The wheat needs water to grow. “Can you help me carry the water, Horse?” asks the Little Red Hen. “No,” says Horse. “I’m busy. Ask Sheep or Dog or Cat or Cow.” 9

All the animals say, “We’re busy.” So the Little Red Hen carries the water and waters the seeds. It’s hard work.

Some weeks later, the wheat is very tall. It is ready to be cut and taken to the mill.

“Can you help me, Dog?” asks the Little Red Hen.

“No,” says Dog, “I’m busy. Ask Horse.”

The Little Red Hen asks Cow and Cat, but they are busy, too. So the Little Red Hen cuts the wheat and takes it to the mill. It’s hard work. 15
