MM: Obviously at 95 minutes I thought our time was probably up, I didn’t think we were going to get that opportunity but when it came to me I tried to stay as calm as I could (and) luckily when I hit it, it went in the back of the net. It’s always nice to score a late one.

CCM: What are your goals during your time in the J.League? MM: Hopefully I can play as many games as I can, score a few goals and hopefully entertain, that’s why Arnie’s bringing me over there and it’s an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. To play football at that level is something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m just really looking forward to it. CCM: What will you miss most about the Club, and the Coast? MM: I’ll miss the boys! It’s been like a family to be honest, they’re a great bunch of lads. The Coast is going to be one we’ll really miss especially in the summer, you only have to go down two minutes and you’re at the beach so that lifestyle will leave me for a while but I’m sure it will be nice in Japan as well. CCM: How much research have you done into your new hometown of Sendai, Japan? MM: I’ve done a little bit of research but I’ve tried to keep it under wraps because I’m still here at the Mariners - I’ve not let myself get too carried away but I’m sure in the next few days I will get more in depth. I’ve been looking at a few of the games and checked out a few of the sites and it looks like a nice place.

MM: They’re going to be a dangerous team now with a new manager, but we have to focus on ourselves. We’re pretty solid at home at Bluetongue, so like I said before we need to be solid in defence, get a clean sheet and I think with the quality we’ve got, combined with the fans coming out to support, we will have enough on the day.

CCM: When do you head off?

CCM: You’re off on loan to Vegalta Sendai following today’s match. Do you expect mixed emotions at full time? MM: Yeah it’s going to be sad to leave - the boys and the fans have been fantastic for the years I’ve been here. It’s just one of those things,

To add some European flavour to “Challenge Gerrit”, The Austrian Schnitzelhaus – Erina have jumped on board to sponsor The Loose Cannon feature. If our fan beats Gerrit, he or she will secure a $75 meal voucher to The Austrian Schnitzelhaus – Erina, and if he or she draws with Gerrit, a $25 voucher will be heading their way!

We love receiving positive feedback from our fans, so we were naturally delighted at Mariners HQ to receive the following e-mail from supporter Susan Heaney on New Year’s Day.

I’m going to Japan to join Arnie and I’m really looking forward to the challenge so it will be a bit of a bittersweet moment.

CCM: What are the key areas for the Mariners against Melbourne Heart?

A former employee at 3. Bundesliga outfit SC Preußen Münster, Stoenner’s knowledge of Deutsch football is strong. However as he learns more about the Hyundai A-League, we’re giving one fan a week the opportunity to tip the round against Gerrit!

FAN FEEDBACK

CCM: How did you feel when you scored the winner against Perth Glory on Tuesday?

MM: It’s massive. Obviously Heart are coming off the back of a bad run but with a new manager they will be fired up. I think we need to be ruthless, we need to be solid in defence and keep a clean sheet. Our quality will shine through.

German Gerrit Stoenner is currently interning with the Central Coast Mariners.

How good is that? “PROST!” says Gerrit.

Today Michael McGlinchey will play his final fixture for the Mariners prior to his season long loan spell with J.League outfit Vegalta Sendai. Before his last game in yellow – for the time being, at least – we caught up with the nimble New Zealander. McGlinchey has captured the hearts and minds of Mariners aficionados since 2009, and sets sail to the land of the rising sun and Asia’s strongest domestic league with the well wishes of everyone at the Club.

CCM: It was a huge three points that the boys earned against Glory. How important is it to back it up against Heart today?

“Hi there, I wanted to pass on my sincere thanks to the wonderful Mariners players. At the last few games my boys have been thrilled to have the players come over them at the end of the game for high-fives, photos and autographs. Last night’s game was a great family night out topped off with fireworks and it was refreshing to have a New Year’s Eve celebration that was fun and safe for my young family. I’ve attached a photo of my four-year-old (Jenson Medcalf) being signed by Mitchell Duke (Liam Reddy also very kindly stopped for an autograph). I know that they need to go to the sheds for their cool down and post game debrief, so we really do appreciate their time. My sincerest thanks to all in the Mariners organisation.”

MM: I fly to Japan on the 14th of January and then we have a 35 day training camp in the south of Japan so I’m pretty much into the pre-season from the middle of January and then the season starts in the first week of March. CCM: Good luck, Mikey! MM: Thanks very much. By @Tys0nScott

The decision was made to leave the Yellow Army’s Marcos Flores Appreciation Song in today’s The Loose Cannon out of respect of Marcos, and all he has given to the Club so far in his time as a Mariner. From everyone at the Club, Marcos, we wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you gracing Bluetongue Stadium again soon.

LADDER going into Round 13

Recently we caught up with 23-year-old Central Coast Mariners defender Brent Griffiths. In a wide-ranging chat, Griffiths told us about his development as a player since joining the Mariners, his time at England’s Blackburn Rovers as a trainee, how he’s seen the Hyundai A-League evolve during his time in the competition, his goals for 2014, as well as what life is like living with Justin Pasfield and Zac Anderson.

CCM: Growing up what inspired you to become a professional footballer?

BG: My goals are mostly team goals. I want us to do well first of all in the ACL (AFC Champions League), because I think it’s something that is very special for the league and the Club. I think it’s something that, for me, was a highlight of my career so

Central Coast Mariners have bagged exactly two goals in their last three league meetings with Melbourne Heart. Melbourne Heart’s current winless streak away from home of 19 games (L16 D3) is the longest ever seen in the Hyundai A-League.

#3 Josh Rose I want to play as many games in that as possible. In terms of the A-League, we’re going to make the top six, that’s the way I see it, we’re definitely going to make the top six. At the end of the day the way it’s structured anything can happen. We deserved to possibly win the premiership last year and we deserved to win the Grand Final so why can’t we do all that again? It’s just a matter of having the right combination of luck and opportunity.

Josh Rose feels like a part of the furniture here at the Central Coast Mariners having arrived at the Club in 2010 after a stint in the Romanian top flight. Rose has proven to be a perfect fit at left back and offers so much down the left side of the pitch. Known for his ability to get forward, Rose plays the left side with speed, confidence, and stamina. Even at 32 Rose sees more of the pitch than most throughout 90 minutes and always manages to add an extra element in attack when it’s least expected.

CCM: You live with Justin Pasfield and Zac Anderson. What’s that like? BG: So far it’s been great! They’re interesting people and I think we have the right mixture of people in our household. We have Zac who’s almost OCD - you put your keys on the table, walk into your room, come out and they’ve moved because he wasn’t happy with where they were sitting! He’s a constant professional, stretching left, right and centre, and he makes you want to become a better player which is brilliant. Then we’ve got Juzzo on the other end of the spectrum who is just a happy go lucky guy. He’s a special kid, a great guy. It’s always good to live with the boys because you get different perspectives from training. They’re both brilliant cooks so I don’t have to do anything - I’m just the dish pig!

Even though Rose will have his work cut out for him today containing Heart’s attacking threats, you can bet he will still find opportunities to venture down the wing. Keep an eye on Rosey this afternoon and if you haven’t already, you will see how hard he works for the team!!

CLUB NEWS RELIABLE ROSE JOINS 100 CLUB! Flying left back Joshua Rose became the eighth player in Central Coast Mariners history to make 100 Hyundai A-League appearances for the Club when he took to the field against Western Sydney Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium, Parramatta before Christmas. The reliable Rose joined the Mariners in 2010 after a three year spell with Romanian outfit Universitatea Craiova, and has since established himself as one of the most consistent players in Australia’s top flight. Rose joined former captain Alex Wilkinson and current skipper John Hutchinson, as well as Danny Vukovic, Matt Simon, Adam Kwasnik, Michael McGlinchey, and Pedj Bojic in making 100 Hyundai A-League appearances for the yellow and navy. “It’s an honour and when you look at those names they’re Mariners to a tee,” Rose said. “To have my name alongside these guys is an honour and for me it’s a fantastic achievement.” Rose will be presented with a memento of his 100 Hyundai A-League games for the yellow and navy prior to kick-off this afternoon.

KWASNIK RULED OUT FOR THE CAMPAIGN Striker Adam Kwasnik will miss the remainder of the Club’s 2013/14 season due to a knee injury. Kwasnik will undergo surgery this month to address a knee cartilage problem, with the recovery phase from the operation rendering him unavailable for the remainder of the campaign. Kwasnik is understandably disappointed to have been ruled out for the rest of the season, however said his focus is on returning to full fitness and competitive action as soon as possible. “I am very disappointed, but my focus is getting back with the squad for next preseason,” he said. “First and foremost I just want to play in the Hyundai A-League again. It will be a long process, but hopefully I can get back.” Club management are currently considering options for an injury replacement player for Kwasnik.

CCM: What are your goals in 2014?

BG: It’s massive - it’s apples and oranges. The way the league was set up when I first came back to Australia, it was professional gig but part time football, that’s how I felt. We were training three or four days a week then we might get a day off – it was really relaxed and it was like a state league job. Since then, to what it is now, it’s completely different. Now you can’t afford to have days off or not be in the gym. There’s no drinking culture that might have been around back in the day. You can’t get away with it anymore. For me it’s growing and it’s only going to continue to grow.

CCM: How have you seen the Hyundai A-League evolve as a competition since your first pro contract?

Melbourne Victory

I

BG: You have to look at your coaches and the players you’ve played with. For me, Jamie Harnwell was someone that was a nice guy, great clubman at Perth Glory and played 11 or 12 seasons so he helped me along with my football there. At Phoenix I had countless players, here I have countless players but I think it always comes down to your family. My brother, my Dad, my Mum, have been the main people who have spurred me on when times have been tough, so I’d say them.

CCM: Who have been some of the most influential people in your career to date?

OFF

BG: I think since I left Blackburn when I was 18/19 I was a certain type of player. I feel like in between then and the Mariners I became stagnant and that same player, I never grew better. But since I have been at the Mariners I think I am a 50 per cent better player. I feel that on the pitch, technique, football knowledge, tactics, were all a part of my game that I never knew. Arnie, Mossy, JC, Clarky – the whole coaching staff has brought me on ten fold.

13

CCM: How do you think you have developed as a footballer since being at the Mariners?

Western Sydney Wanderers

CL

BG: Yeah definitely, it was really tough leaving Phoenix – I wasn’t sure if I was going to get another contract. I went about three or four months without a gig, grinding it out in the VPL (Victorian Premier League) with the players down there and I still remember to this day the call I got from Arnie (Graham Arnold). I was sitting in the cinemas about to watch Batman and he said that “Wilko’s gone” (Alex Wilkinson), and my chance had come.

BG: It was a great experience for me and something that a lot of footballers don’t get to do. At the time growing up for me in Perth there wasn’t much of an outlet. Both Rostyn and I went across and we trialled with a few clubs and Blackburn was the club that we ended up at. It was a great experience, the facilities are unbelievable, top notch. When they (Blackburn) won the Premier League there were millions of pounds chucked into the youth system so they were on par with the likes of Manchester United and some of the best in England. It was a great experience and something that has probably gotten me to where I am today.

BG: I think with an English background my Dad was a big influence, probably my older brother being two years older we were always kicking the ball in the backyard, influencing me to play. Me and my Mum are Newcastle fans, my Dad’s a Manchester United fan and my brother is a Liverpool fan, so it’s always been in our family.

Melbourne Heart have travelled four times previously to Gosford, losing in all of those instances.
