DIRECTOR’S NOTE:

The Sound of Music is the last collaboration between Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It tells the story of how events in Europe in the 1930’s changed the lives of the Trapp family when they found it too difficult to go along with the Nazi regime that had invaded Austria. The family chose to leave their home and belongings behind, eventually ending up in Stow Vermont. Though the Nazi invasion is included in the musical, it was downplayed because it was produced only 15 years after WWII. The feeling was the public wouldn’t be willing to accept the Nazi references if they were fully portrayed. In this production, I have tried to put a bit more emphasis on the reality of the time, by adding some visual content to help reflect the impact of the Nazi regime. I believe it is important to remember that time in Europe and the world, its impact, and the devastating results of that impact.

We see very similar events happening in the world today, even within our own country. If we choose to not remember and learn from history, it is destined to repeat itself. Hatred and blame can be devastating and cause us to focus on things that affect all our lives negatively. It is all too easy to let power over others drive us to do and say things that will lead to difficult choices and unwanted results. The underlying story of The Sound of Music brings that into focus for us.

The Sound of Music is a beloved family classic, and we should enjoy the story’s beautiful music and romance for what it is. However, we should not let that beautiful music and romance cover up the historical events behind the story, and the devastation those events brought about.

Thank you for attending this production. I sincerely hope you enjoy The Sound of Music and fall in love with it as I have. Though I dare say, you probably already have.

Be sure to visit our “Small Works = Big Joy” Pop-Up Art Exhibit in the lobby!
Happy Holidays to you all, Mike
