CAMPUS TRAININGS Understanding the Legal Response to Intimate Partner Violence on Campus

Healthcare Screening for Intimate Partner Violence on Campus Intimate partner violence is associated with significant health problems such as anxiety, depression, sexually transmitted infections, serious injury, and substance use, all of which have long-term physical and emotional repercussions. The impact of a controlling and abusive relationship is challenging for any victim/survivor. This training will educate campus healthcare responders about the risks associated with intimate partner violence, recommend screening tools to identify individuals at risk, and support the process for referring to intimate partner violence providers for follow up care.

Whenever a student experiences intimate partner abuse or violence, they have the opportunity to go through the judicial hearing process on campus. Additionally, there are opportunities for adjudication outside the campus environment. This training will provide its attendees with an overview of the criminal justice response to intimate partner violence including the involvement of law enforcement, the Lethality Assessment Program and prosecution of someone who is arrested for intimate partner violence. Civil court remedies for victim/survivors will also be presented.

MEMBER ORGANIZATION TRAININGS Understanding Batterer Intervention Programs

Conflict Resolution Tools for Domestic Violence Shelter Staff

Batterer intervention programming (BIP) is a common sanction when a family violence arrest has occurred and the primary goal of a these programs is to stop violent and abusive behaviors. Batterer intervention programs can also play an important role in a coordinated community response to domestic violence by emphasizing the importance of victim safety and offender accountability. This training will review the different types of batterer intervention programs operating throughout Connecticut.

For those fleeing an abusive partner, finding a safe and supportive refuge for themselves and their children is critically important. Sharing living space with others is difficult under the best of circumstances and conflicts are inevitable, but group living is particularly challenging when sharing communal space with strangers who are living in real fear, are unsure of the future, and are recovering from the trauma of domestic violence. This training will equip advocates to better identify, understand and respond to the many challenges associated with communal living.

MEMBER ORGANIZATION TRAININGS When Words Fail, Music Speaks Music gives us a voice when we are at a loss for words. It gives us hope in times of darkness, power in times of vulnerability, and can help us relish our joy and celebrate our growth. Music has strong connections to our memory recall and to emotional processing in our brain. The use of music and music therapy can assist survivors of domestic violence in processing and moving past the events that have shaped (but do not define) them. In this workshop, advocates and therapists who work with survivors of domestic violence will learn how to use music to help their clients process their emotions, engage in self-care, and relate to their children as they grow. Music as a self-care strategy for individuals who work with this population will also be explored. Training Objectives: 

Participants will learn how music is processed in the brain and its relation to crisis and trauma.

Participants will identify music-based strategies they can utilize with survivors of domestic violence and when they need to refer to a music therapist.

Participants will identify music-based strategies they can use for their own self-care.

Case Management Using a Comprehensive Advocacy Approach

Serving Transgender and Non-Binary Victims of Domestic Violence

This training will address the relationship between an advocate and a victim/survivor which is a partnership based on advocacy and collaboration. While safety is always the primary goal, this cooperative relationship will often address housing, employment, education, life skills, children’s needs and any other aspirations held by the victim/survivor. Participants will be provided with case management tools that use a comprehensive advocacy approach, focusing on identifying a victim/survivor’s strengths to help them reach their goals.

Despite the fact that people who identify as transgender or non-binary experience violence at alarming rates, there are still significant gaps in services for these survivors of domestic violence. This training will provide meaningful information to support advocates seeking to provide accessible, sensitive, and relevant services that are inclusive to survivors of all genders. It will also include resources that explain the importance of pronouns and outline some key concepts and terms relating to gender identity and expression.

At this training, participants will:  Learn engagement strategies  Discuss ways to develop goals with a survivor that are clear, succinct, and attainable  Identify tools to help build motivation for change

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM In an effort to even better serve our member agencies, CCADV has added both live and recorded webinars to our training package.

Recorded Webinars Recorded webinars are only available to our member agencies. To view these webinars, log on to the Members Only section of the CCADV website at www.ctcadv.org.

In creating these new components, our aim is:  To provide training in a way that is accessible to advocates and other interested parties, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week so that trainees can create their own learning plan and set their own pace for learning  To reduce the time that training participants are travelling and spending time in a classroom setting

Preparing a Victim for a Court Hearing This webinar will be posted April 2018. There are often no witnesses in domestic violence situations, so a victim/survivor may have to go to court and testify.
