Welcome to our 4th annual Bull and Female Sale! Every year in the agricultural industry we seem to face an abundance of challenges. This year has been no different. After a dry start to the year, we held the cows back from pasture a little longer than usual to give the grass a chance to get ahead….then the heat came. Luckily our grass situation was good but water became a bit of a challenge especially for the pasture our bulls were on. With crops being affected by the heat wave and complete lack of rainfall we were forced to salvage 80% of our barley crop for silage. Knowing feed supply would be under pressure we pushed weaning back in order to prolong having to start feeding. Needless to say our weaning weights as a whole were definitely down a bit, and our cows had to work a little longer feeding big calves. Strong maternal traits have always been our focus, in turn we have been doing some of our own studies within our herd. One has been Nicole’s project of testing colostrum quality on as many cows as time permits over the last 3 calving seasons. The goal is to correlate these results with health and immunity within those females/cow families calves as well as watch the results of the IgG in their colostrum throughout their production life. We have always stressed the importance of milk quality not quantity, so the second test which we started this year was testing butter fat on cows at 120-150 days in milk. Since we do not creep feed we want to know our cows will do that work for us. This will be testing we continue to work on in the upcoming years and are excited to know how this will positively impact our herd. This year we are offering the largest group of calving ease bulls our pen has ever consisted of with the Virginia Edge and Force sired bulls as well as a few others mixed in. With that being said there are still plenty of performance bulls along with the largest number of polled bulls we have had to date. The heifers on offer are also a good mix of calving ease or power females. The high quality commercial heifers are coming from Leon, Tom and Terri, as well as new consigner Clem and his family, and are all replacement heifers that are extremely impressive coming from phenomenal and functional cow herds and great people! Bentley is out of one of my favorite cows, she is angular and feminine necked with extreme depth of body and spring of rib going back to our original 9G foundation cow line. This bull has impressed us from a young age, he is extremely soft sided, great skeletal structure with a ton of eye appeal. He ranked #4 for weaning weight in his contemporary group.

Brock’s dam is 13 and has been a no miss cow with lots of hair, a larger frame with a big dark set of hooves. Unfortunately for us we still only have 3 daughters retained as she keeps popping out bull calves. This calf is an impressive one when you get behind him! He is square topped and carries great length with an exceptional soft side. His frost nipped ears are the result of a mama who was just a second calver with too much love in -40 weather. Snyder is out of a moderate framed cow with a great disposition. Her first calf sold to Pioneer Ridge in last year’s sale. This bull should go out and make great females with such a strong maternal pedigree. Here is a bull with an interesting pedigree with the foundation of 22K (a donor cow that left us great producing daughters and longevity). Solace’s dam is very angular and true to this line has a phenomenal fore quarter attachment and beautiful udder like a second calver at 8yrs old. Here is a calf that may very well be the sleeper of this year’s offering. He is the second youngest calf in the sale but has no problem holding his own in the pen. This is a smooth polled calf that was an eye catcher on pasture all summer. This soft sided rascal’s dam is a maternal sister to last year’s high seller JNR Baldwin purchased by Wolfe Farms/Wolfe Fleckvieh. She is a moderate framed cow that has a strong foot and impeccable udder. We retained her first calf in herd who was a standout in the bred heifer pen and showing a lot of potential. This polled soggy meat wagon is going to make you females you will not want to part with and steers that will come home heavy. This is a smooth polled, larger framed bull going back to the old K127 cow who left us numerous daughters to build from. This is the only bull calf on offer from this cow line, luckily for us all other cows in this line had heifer calves. Lot #53 is the only heifer we are parting with from this line. Arlow is an extremely smooth sided loose hided bull. His full sister sold in last year’s sale which our son purchased, she has developed into a great heifer as a bred and we have retained the other 2 females produced. 580C is a moderate framed young cow that has proven to work with 4 different bulls she has been bred to raising good ones every time whether it be bulls or heifers.

Caldwell was one of the quietest calves following us around and picturing was no different. We truly love our Cashmere calves, this is our first calf crop and he has proven to pass on his length of spine, docility, strength of bone all in a polled package. This calf has been a bruit from day one.

We purchased Cezar’s dam from Lonestone Farms, she has been producing very marketable calves with a heifer in Oregon and last year’s bull sold to Ashley Cardinal in Lac La Biche. OPEN HEIFER BREEDING OPTION: We offer to breed any full blood heifers sold in our sale to our walking heifer bulls. To be exposed Mar 20-May 10, ultrasounded the end of may at no cost to the buyer for feed or breeding. Bred heifers will have to be picked up by the purchaser the first week of June if this option is taken. All bulls will be Dilutor tested and available upon request. Insurance will be available sale day. If any animals are not insured the buyer assumes any and all risk. Weather permitting all bulls will be semen tested prior to sale day. No bulls will be loaded out sale day. All bulls will be delivered inter province by JNR free of charge, any bulls out of province will be delivered to central points across Canada at JNR’s expense. Every year we like to breed a couple of heifers to Legend in hopes of getting a heifer bull for ourselves. Legend proved his calving ease again with this girl with just a 68lb birth weight. Savanna 908F was my pick of the bred heifers, she is a moderate framed tank that is as wide and deep as she is tall.

CORTEZ was one of the high sellers in our first annual bull sale, sold to Crimson Creek Simmentals who allowed us to buy a semen interest in the bull. Carissa’s dam is possibly my favorite cow. The youngest heifer on offer but she definitely is no slouch. With K127 and Eveready behind her this girl has longevity. 8 JAN 2021 There is no catchy creative name for the Brown Swiss cross heifer this year simply because Nicole planned on keeping her. Sandi’s dam Bessi is a beautiful purebred Brown Swiss cow with an absolutely beautiful udder. A cow that lets any and all babies suck from her, which is probably why she came up open. We are down to only 2 full Brown Swiss in our herd, so we seized the opportunity to flush to sexed semen and make sure we keep these amazing cows in our herd.
