JNR Farms - 2021 Bull & Female Sale

Page 1

2020… Where to start… We are thankful to be fellow cattle producers and in the agricultural industry in these unprecedented times. Welcome to our 3rd Annual Bull and Female Sale. We truly love the cattle business and all the people we have had the privilege of meeting and call our friends, not just customers. This year again, our catalog starts off with our largest sire groups, then AI sired calves, followed by the calving ease section. Our open heifers on offer this year are a difficult bunch to part with, included are 2 polled females which are admittedly rare for us to ever sell as it has been 15 years since we last publicly sold any polled females. A notable difference in this years sale is our fall calving group. We found out when we were ultra sounding the herd at the end of May that one of our herd bulls left his group unsettled, with all but a few the heifers that we AI’d open. We made the decision to breed the heifers and cows that were in that group opposed to them carrying too much condition by staying open. Thankfully, we have great friends willing to help out in a difficult situation who allowed us to rent RWR Sully, co-owned by Karen and Lonnie Brown and Tony Wolfe. Fall calving will not be a common practice here. With that we offer extra age bulls that were weaned at roughly 6 months of age with no creep or special feed, just a roughage diet. They were then sent to pasture alone with a couple of quiet old cows. On Sept 15th, we brought them home to process and our cull decisions were made. The 14 remaining joined the spring born bulls to be wintered. We felt that developing them this way would definitely let the good ones shine through and prove which are the easy keeping ones, not just easy feeding. The sale will go on as usual this year. We do encourage you to come take a look at the sale offering prior to sale day. Feel free to call us or any of the trusted Transcon Livestock sales team for a professional, private assessment and enquiers on any of our sale animals. We will be following current AHS guidelines sale day. The JNR hospitality will still be on, just presented a little bit different!

Genetic excellence! I’ll expand, the Fullblood/Fleckvieh strain of Simmental remain as one of, if not the purest collection of cattle, genetically speaking, on this continent. What this means, is the heterosis gained in a crossbreeding situation in the commercial beef cattle industry is top-shelf! Now to become more relative to JNR Farms specifically, they have studied proven genetics within and utilized them in creating this breeding program. The pedigrees in these cattle run very deep and are not here by accident! You don’t need to be a Fleckvieh expert and may not know or recognize the bloodlines, which is fine, because JNR Farms have done the research for you! Just know that thru the herdbulls matched to notable cow-families you will have high quality genetics going into your own breeding program. As a unique new feature for the sale this year are the extra-age bulls. They are impressive and of course we all know the benefits they offer at breeding time! Only because of a bull mishap did this occur, the dams of the bulls are top JNR brood cows or up & coming first calvers! The feature heifer group are promising again, never many in numbers but quality security locked in with all the same proven genetic merit as you would expect from this herd. Last, but not least, the Simmi cross commercial heifers are flat good! Sired by JNR bulls, they are a great testimonial to the sale! Show up in person on sale day or come for a pre-sale viewing of the offering ahead of time, either way, we encourage you to get some eyes on these cattle! Let us know if we can help you with any of your buying needs, in your absence, by either calling our cell phones for a personal appraisal or sign up with our online bidding system. Boulder has been our next best kept secret, but not by choice. He was an embryo calf born on our farm and unfortunately orphaned at 2 1/2 months old. His recip mother casted herself on the edge of the bedding pack and this stubborn bugger wouldn’t go to another cow or take a bottle. Knowing his genetics and how his full brother JNR Broker (co-owned by Wolfe Farms and Keato Meadows) developed and produces, we wanted to take a chance on letting Boulder grow up naturally at his own pace. We didn’t use him as a yearling so he wasn’t held back further in developing and then put him out for the first time with our fall calving group. He has blown us away with the consistency, performance, and quality of calves he sires. We then used him heavily again that spring for the regular breeding season and are impressed with how he covers cows. This will be a herd bull that we anxiously wait for each calf to be born!

Beckham has been one of the pen attractions. This is JNR Boulder’s first set of calves and they have surpassed all of our expectations with the front end of the bull pen sired by him. As a first calver Savanna 790E has hit a home run with this bull calf! The Bulletproof x Salton combinations have worked extremely well with producing sound, functional, and hard working progeny as well as eye appeal.

Bullseye is another Boulder that is packing size on the bottom side and performance on the top side of his pedigree. We purchased his grandam from Diamond T Simmentals when she was 12 yrs old and flushed her until she was 17 yrs old. We have 4 natural and 3 embryo females from the old 127K cow, all of which are extremely strong producers. She was an impressive tank of a cow with a huge foot and definite longevity. At 16 yrs old the old girl gave us a set of twin heifers, one of which is Bullseye’s dam. The other is the dam of lot #24. It’s no surprise Bullseye has hit the mark, ranking 1st is his weaning group with ADG of 3.9 lbs!!

Baldwin is my personal favourite horned bull in our offering. Unfortunately we lost a few cows last winter and this brutes young dam was one of them. As a result, he was orphaned off at 4 months old and it never held him back as he looked great right through. The production within his lineage has been extremely strong for us. We feel a person will have to travel up and down the road for a while to find a calf that looks like this backed by a solid line of high producing cows. This was JNR Tajsa 475B’s first and only bull calf, although we thankfully have 2 daughters in our herd.

This bull is another one of the orphaned calves that we think has grown out incredibly well. Baracade’s dam also the grand dam of lot 3 has produced many phenomenal progeny until we lost her at the age of 13. Take a look at her track record with 15 females going back to her in our herd, this will be her 5th bull to move onto breed for others including JNR Philosophy. It has been a HUGE regret that we never flushed her but its these cows that we struggle to take out of production as well. This bull has consistency and phenomenal maternal production backing him as well as a line proven to produce outstanding bulls AND females. There is absolutely NO guess work here.

Braxton was a twin to another bull calf. He was raised on one of our Brown Swiss nurse cows who didn’t mind other twin calves sucking her, needless to say he had plenty of competition. This calf may be the sleeper of the sale because he is not the biggest bull in his contemporary group. With our aging bull battery and his dam now being 11 yrs old we have decided to retain his twin brother for ourselves to use as our junior polled herd sire this coming season. Braxton’s dam has been a hard working, fertile female with this being her second set of twins. She is also the grand dam to lot #39. We are confident in this cow line which is why we are keeping Braxton’s full brother.

Braxon’s pedigree is stacked with several of our donor cows. With JNR Crackerjack on his maternal side, this calf carries his signature length of spine which he should add to his calves as well as the easy do-ability of the BAM BAM lineage. His maternal grand dam TGT 22K was one of our polled donor cows. Over the years, this cow family has added 18 polled females as well as 2 past polled herd sires, JNR Bailiff and JNR Equity. Beretta has been a standout from our winter bull calves from a young age. We bought RUK Capri 1C from our friend Richard of Kulyk Simmentals at the 2017 Fleckvieh Equation Sale. She was our pick of the breds there that year and her heifer calf was our high selling female last year. Capri produces extreme depth of rib and softness that we really like for ease of keeping as you see in this bull calf. The mating between this cow and Boulder just clicked.

Bourbon is a soft sided, bull very similar to his maternal brother who sold to Scotford Colony in last years sale. This mating was done intentionally with the hopes of a female but instead, on Dec 27th she gave us her 3rd consecutive bull calf. Bourbon carries 2 cow lines we love, Shamu and Margo. The females that he will throw should be amazingly productive while still giving you those big steers. His maternal grandam was probably one of THE most powerful and impressive polled females we’ve ever seen. It’s a good thing we have a couple more full sib embryos to Bourbon’s dam in the tank just incase she continues to pop out bull calves every year.

BEE Heide is a cow we co-own with Kulyk Simmentals. She was the high seller that year from Beech Bros. at the 2015 Fleckvieh Equation sale. Ballot is a twin to a heifer but that certainly didn’t hold him back. Ballot is smooth made, based on his mothers track record of consistently low birth weight calves and Boulder’s success with some of our fall calving heifers. When it comes to calving ease, he has our vote regardless of being a twin. Heide’s bull last year sold to repeat buyers Trent & Kristina Bohning.

We purchased Code Red’s maternal grand dam (also the dam of LOT #8) from BBBG Group as a bred in 2016 bred to a red purebred bull. She spit out his dam Coralee at 52 lbs. Regan discovered her out in the field and from day 1 insisted he buy her from us and she became his 4H heifer winning Reserve Champion Female. So with that, Regan now owns the only Purebred cow in our herd. This is Coralee’s second calf with her first heifer now in the USA. Code Red is the youngest calf in our offering but has held his own in the group.

Summit is one of Nicole’s favourites and has always been deep bodied and soggy from the start, like his sire JNR Sniper. If you’re looking for a bull to add females to your herd, this calf’s maternal lines have had a huge impact on our herd. MFL 59E has left a legacy of 20 females in our herd. This is not including the 13 females Concept has added to our herd thus far and 2 Concept sons sold in our 2019 sale JNR Cashmere and JNR Cortez. We were fortunate enough to purchase semen on these bulls. Summit’s dam is a moderate framed cow who has only ever thrown 1 heifer which we of course retained. Her 2018 bull calf sold in our first sale to Trent & Kristina Bohning.

Affinity is a looker, here to showcase exactly what JNR Armor is doing for us in the replacement pen. This girl lines up with the best we have. Her dam is a no miss cow that no matter what we breed her to, she has a rocket of a calf. Affinity’s mother is a beautiful, deep bodied, clean uttered cow. In 5 breeding seasons, JNR Pol Pamelina has had calves sired by 5 different bulls and consistently has lower birth weight calves, even when bred to power bulls. Her 2019 sale bull was purchased by Dobbie Farms of Ontario and 2020 sale bull sold to Sinister Simmentals of Saskatchewan.

15 years have past since we last sold a polled heifer publicly… offering 2 in this sale was a decision that didn’t come easily. Polled Angelique is a sweet heart of a heifer. Her grand dam, who is now 12 yrs old, has been one of our most fertile cows and thankfully, has left many daughters for us. This heifer was one of the younger ones in the group but still ranked #2 for weaning. Her maternal brother sold to Jacob & Melanie Onyschuk, Vimy AB last year. Acquiring polled females from here is an opportunity that will be rare.

Amethyst truly should not be leaving the farm. From the start we have loved this heifer and how she continues to develop. She is a super feminine, polled beauty out of a sweetheart of a young cow that has worked with every bull we mate her with thus far. This is JNR Malita’s 3rd heifer calf out of 4 calving seasons, and her only bull calf to date sold in our 2019 sale to Norman Theroux, St. Paul AB. We try cross our cows several different ways and as they prove working matings we cross them back that way. With confidence in this heifer we bred her dam back the same way, making parting with her just a little easier.

Chantelle is a very strong Concept daughter out of a cow that is very angular, has a beautiful head, and large muzzle with great genetics. We purchased Wolfes Marita at the 2013 Fleckvieh Equation and have been very impressed with her. Chantelle has a beautiful head, great hair coat, and should have a phenomenal udder like her mother who is 9 yrs old now. Wolfes Marita is also the maternal grand dam of Lot #45 who is another sweetheart.

This is our daughter Rayanna’s heifer. Carly is our second Concept female on offer. It is always interesting trying to settle on who gets to buy/keep the heifers from this cow and she keeps it interesting as she has only had 1 bull calf that sold in the 2017 Fleckvieh Equation for $15,500. We won the battle in 2016 and purchased her female out of Bulletproof who is phenomenal in type and production. Carly being a Bulletproof Grand daughter should be no different. Last years heifer stayed in Rayanna’s cow herd but as a University student now she has realized parting with her to help pay tuition is the way to go.

This is our first calf crop out of JNR Boulder and while he sired our largest group of bulls on offer as well as largest heifer group, Bianca will be the only Boulder daughter we are parting with. We have retained 7 females in the replacement pen, and 1 heifer went to the USA. The only cull females in his group were 3 mixed twin heifers. To say we are excited about Boulder’s future here is an understatement! An embryo female, JNR Mystic 229Z is a long bodied, 9 yr old cow with a perfect udder who has been a home run hitter. Her son is none other than JNR Armor, in 2019 her sale heifer sold to Kulyk Simmentals and last year her impressive bull calf sold to KSL Simmentals.

We had 7 JNR Sniper heifer calves in total last calving season opposed to just 1 last year. All 8 females have been keepers. If not for wanting to represent Sniper on the female side in this sale, Sophia would hands down stay in our replacement pen. Lot #42’s dam is this girls grand dam. Sophia has the pedigree a genetic student would love and when you see her it will seal the deal.

Back by popular demand, we are offering this Brown Swiss cross heifer. Sugar Teats comes from our little herd of nurse cows we have for raising twins. These cows love babies and are extremely hardy (crossed with Fleckvieh). They can run with the herd competitively and breed back to produce big marketable calves. The opportunity to purchase these dairy heifers is not a guarantee for every sale so don’t miss out!

It’s always nice when Leon tells me I can select from his entire pen of 55. When the quality is so deep throughout. This is the 3rd time he has offered a great group. The past 2 yrs Ron Haesloop has purchased Leons heifers with very positive feed back. These girls will go out and work.

... This will be Peters second time consigning a group of heifers. The heifers this year come with a shot of Angus in the back, they are good sized heifers for their age carrying adequate flesh without compromising longevity. Last years buyer said they have grown out very well and are extremely quiet and easy to be around.

Tom & Terri amaze me for a commercial operation how much they put into studying and following pedigrees. Knowing what traits they want to add whether it be milk, frame or growth they truly are students of genetics and are not scared to ask questions to make informed decisions. They started from a Limo based herd and have been breeding them up using Angus & the influence of JNR fleck bulls to produce wide topped, strong hipped functional females. Tom allowed me to pick from the top of the pen to be sure they are represented well.
